From the Editors' Desks: Notes from Christy & Jon to you, dear reader.

Hi! For those of you who don’t know me, I’ve been the editor and publisher of Surrender to the Flow since it began way back in 1998 – now twenty-four long years ago. Since then, we’ve created seventy-five free-to-the-public editions with an all-volunteer staff and thanks to advertising support from the community. The majority of those have been print editions like this publication that you hold in your hand, but now and then we do digital-only issues as well. Almost every issue we’ve ever made has been specifically for Phish tours and runs and the only runs we’ve skipped making an issue for since our inception were Big Cypress and a few Mexicos. Every edition has been entirely Phish-based, except three during the band’s hiatus from 2000-2002 – two for summer festivals, and one for Oysterhead. Until now!

Although I’m thrilled that STTF has always had huge support and love from the community, and at this point, probably over 500 fans have contributed to the mag at one point or another, it wasn’t until Jon Caruso, TEDitor-in-Chief of The el Goose Times reached out to me in August to pitch this collaborative issue that I personally and finally had the opportunity to work with and talk with someone who does exactly what I do – for another band. This is the first non-Phish issue of Surrender to the Flow since the Summer of 2002.

I don’t want to say it’s been a lonely road creating Surrender all these years – it’s certainly been anything BUT. However, it’s been really refreshing to talk to and work with someone else over the past few months who also makes a fanzine as a passion project for his favorite band, and it’s been a wonderful, memorable, and truly a complete pleasure to work with Jon to create this magazine you now hold in your hand. We work well together; everything was easy, and everything just flowed (no pun intended) - and that says a lot coming from someone like me, who has been the sole boss of STTF for almost two and a half decades so far.

I’d never met Jon before his first email to me but now I consider him a dear friend – although we have not yet met in person. I’m so glad that he had the great idea to create a collaborative, 50/50 issue between Surrender to the Flow and The el Goose Times for this exciting Trey Anastasio Band and Goose tour.

Thanks, Jon, for being awesome.

This tour is really something special! Whether you like Goose or not, or whether you like TAB or not, these two bands are about to share a billing and probably even share the stage at points over this eight show tour. As a longtime Phish fan, I have to admit that it’s surprising to see Trey so willing to let another band take the spotlight while he’s in the building, especially when he loves to play so much. He must really love Goose – and so there’s a very good chance that if they’re new to you that you will too.

As for the Goose fans reading this who are new to TAB – you’re going to love it. Although TAB plays Phish songs, and is led by Trey, this band is not Phish at all. It’s a dance party beginning to end, though, and you’re going to love it as much as Trey himself does – which, when you see him grinning up there, you’ll realize is a whole hell of a lot. Welcome!

We hope you have so much fun at these shows! It’s hard to know what magic they will bring, but you can expect to see nine guys and two women up on the stage having a damn good time every night.

Hello, readers! My name is Jon Caruso and I am the “TEDitor-inChief” at The el Goose Times since its inception in April 2021.

One and a half years later, with the help from my incredible team, we have published seven volumes and (including this momentous issue) three special editions – completely funded and sustained by our amazing community. I’m so thankful for the support from my team who volunteer their time to help make this happen, for without them, this wouldn’t be possible. The el Goose Times was a fanzine inspired by a culmination of influences throughout my life that I’d like to pay tribute to.

First, a little bit about my life: my Mom was a Librarian who loved to read and engage with the community; while my Dad loved going to concerts and listening to music (in addition to being adventurous and living life to the fullest.) Music and art in general were both a big part of my life growing up. The first CD my Dad ever bought me was a compilation album by the Grateful Dead, The Arista Years - though I wouldn’t get into the Dead until years later (funnily enough). Shortly after I graduated college, I worked for The Phoenix newspaper group (The Boston Phoenix, Providence Phoenix and Portland Phoenix).

Around the same time, I had my first real exposure to the jam band community through the Gathering of the Vibes festival in Connecticut in 2011 and 2013. I followed anything related to the Dead for years until I found Phish around 2017, with my first shows being 12/28-12/29/18 – the latter of which changed everything for me.

On the flip side, I discovered Goose in 2020 during Bingo Tour and my first show was 10/3/20 (a drive-in show in Swanzey, New Hampshire). Phish and Goose helped get me through the pandemic with their live streams, like so many other fans. I’ve made so many lifelong friends through both communities and for that, I’m grateful.

Outside of my personal influences, The el Goose Times was influenced by our forefathers that paved the way, like Dupree’s Diamond News, Unbroken Chain, Pharmer's Almanac Tour Extra & Surrender to the Flow. Our goal was to bring back the physical magazine concept as a way to engage with the community, get more people involved with the band and serve as a point of discussion pre- (or post-) show. In addition, with the rise of smartphones, I felt it would be nice to have something a bit more “old school” – something to interact with and take our minds away from mindlessly scrolling our social feeds. To bring back that human element/ connection that was so prevalent before.

The moment Trey Anastasio walked on-stage at Radio City Music Hall was like two of my biggest worlds colliding, in the best way. When the Trey Anastasio Band & Goose tour was announced, I was over the moon! In this very moment, a lightbulb went off in my head: what if The el Goose Times collaborated with Surrender to the Flow in the spirit of the tour? Something of this nature hadn’t been done before, but I said to myself: “Hell, I’m gonna take that step.” I reached out to Christy and I was thrilled that she was open to collaborate!

What an amazing experience this has been. It has shown me that two fanbases (that sometimes can butt heads with each other) can put aside their differences, focus on the music and work together to create something unique to honor/celebrate the moment. I’ve learned so much from Christy and her sage advice from the decades of experiences she has, doing what I do now. It’s been an honor to have had the opportunity to work with Christy and her team at Surrender to the Flow! May our friendship live on through this tour and beyond.

Take it all in, and have a blast – this is a unique tour and you’re lucky to be witnessing it. Enjoy, and thanks again, Jon Caruso, for hitting me up to create this issue for both TAB & Goose fans this fall.

CommUNITY Perspective: The Torch Doesn’t Exist

By Marc Komito (EGT) Live music is *never* about comparison. Read it again: live music is *never* about comparison. Our society is, however, obsessed with rankings and we’re constantly inundated with lists and awards - from Grammys to Billboards and everything in between. No matter what topic interests you – whether it be toaster ovens, cars, hotels, movies, or experiences – there’s a numbered list on the internet to sort it all out. I admittedly seek the counsel of those lists before I choose a vacation spot, a hotel, or even a rental car and gold stars and ratings play an embarrassingly significant role in the ultimate decision as to how and where I spend my dollars.

What about entertainment? Same applies. If I had a penny for every movie I’ve skipped because someone I’ve never met didn’t like it then I’d have at least $7.26. Music? Even Ticketbastard (typo?...you tell me) sends an email asking me to *rate* my experience after attending a concert, as if that highly subjective opinion based on a wholly personal set of circumstances has any bearing on whether the next patron will spend their hard earned dollars similarly.

Even for one who suffers from an acute case of recency bias, I am hyper aware of these facts when I subjectively claim that this or that show is the *best*. I just can’t help myself from doing it…over… and over…and over again. And it’s true every time.

You may have heard that “every show is the best show since the last show till the next show." Well, that’s how I hedge my bets and it’s never not true.

And it’s no different when someone claims that this band is *better* than that band but that’s where it gets divisive.

Why is Band A being good and selling tickets a threat to Band B? Easy answer…it’s not. They’re wholly unrelated and there’s room in the sandbox for everyone. (Hold that thought for now.) Being obsessed with the best is not only divisive, it’s driving us insane. Can’t we all just root for those we support – and maybe even those for whom we only hold casual indifference – and collect memories in harmony?

Out of a jam scene long dominated by Trey, and inspired by the indie world of Father John Misty, Goose has found a space of its own in the sandbox, a space big enough for all of them to play in together.

Good things tend to gravitate toward other good things and those cross-pollinations faithfully multiply.

The proof was in the air at Radio City, and in the music, and in the mystified grins on the players’ faces. No torch was passed, but the collective flame undoubtedly glowed a little bit hotter.”

–“Wow,” you might be thinking, “I’m definitely picking up what you’re putting down, but what does any of this have to do with The Torch?”

–“The Torch?”

Consider the fact that you’re reading this argument in a collaborative issue of Surrender To The Flow and The el Goose Times, an issue that was published exclusively for a co-headlining tour between the Trey Anastasio Band and Goose in the wake of that historic night and the proof is clearly in the pudding: the flame is raging and we’re all basking in its glow.

–“Yeah, the Torch. You know, the one that Jerry Garcia ignited with a fart and passed to Trey Anastasio either at or before the time of his death which Trey has held uncontested for at least 27 years and has either given or is thinking about giving to Goose even though it’s still really his until death do they part.”

–“Oh, that Torch.”

It doesn’t exist. But if it did, consider this argument from Andrew O’Brien, editor-in-chief at Live For Live Music. “If a torch did exist, then it’s just a vessel for the flame it carries. That flame has inarguably spread in new directions through the years, but existing burns don’t go out as a fire spreads—they just make the space brighter. Further, if Trey did ever hold such a torch, then it’s still firmly in his grasp. But don’t be distracted by that conventional, linear narrative.

Instead, take a look around at the space that this growing flame continues to illuminate.

It bears repeating: live music is *not* about comparison. It is, however, often about choices and since I haven’t yet figured out how to be in two places at once, it often comes to this or that, here or there.

We vote with our wallets and we vote with our presence. Remember, though, that there’s room in the sandbox for everyone. So you see, there is no torch. But if there was, I think both Trey and Goose would agree that it goes to …

After that, the band just grew and grew. First, in February and March of 2001, Trey loves to play - everyone knows when Phish was on hiatus, Trey did a tour that. Twenty-four years ago in 1998, Trey with Russ and Tony but added horns decided that Phish’s heavy touring schedule including Dave Grippo (sax), Andy Moroz still wasn’t enough to fulfill his deep needs to create music constantly. Rather than cajole Mike, Page, and Fishman into touring more heavily when they all wanted time to relax and enjoy other pursuits, Trey realized that he needed a side project. TAB has existed in some form ever since, although its form has morphed and evolved many times and in many ways over these past two decades.

Let’s take a look at the history of the Trey Anastasio Band. (…Which Is very confusing – but I think I got it all right.)

The first incarnation of Trey Band was really just a fun night out at Winooski, Vermont’s Higher Ground.

This eventually popular club had only been open a few days on April 17, (trombone), and Jennifer Hartswick Hartwsick (trumpet).

issues, in 2005 TAB morphed again – and this time it even had a different name. 70 Volt Parade was originally a five-piece band including Ray (keyboards), Skeeto Valdez (drums), Peter Chwazik (bass), and Les Hall (guitar and keys). This incarnation of TAB even played a NYE show at MSG opening for The Black Crowes in 2005.

However, 70 Volt Parade’s lineup changed numerous times in the two years to include a number of different people who came and went, assumingly because Trey was probably not all that fun to be around at the time. Trey’s big arrest that changed and saved his life happened on December 15, 2006, just 5 days after the band – by this point called TAB again – closed its fall tour at The Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles.

Two weeks later, the band played its scheduled NYE Run (DC, Boston, Albany, AC x 2). TAB also played two shows in March of 2007 in Florida that were already on their schedule. Then, Trey didn’t play in public again until July 2008. He slowly worked his way back to TAB through a few solo performances, one festival performance with “Classic TAB” (Trey, Russ, Tony, and Ray), and a performance at Carnegie Hall with the New York Philharmonic.

During the year and a half that Trey and Trey Band didn’t really play, Trey was focusing on his legal battle and his sobriety – something that was very, very necessary.

This time period was tough for Phish fans, but when Trey announced an eight-night run with TAB in October 2008, rumors started to fly about a possible Phish return as well.

It was true. Phish announced their return on October 1, 2008, and they came back in March of 2009. Trey Band took a year-long break at that point, but since then, TAB has toured most years. us were in denial about his substance abuse (Continued on the next page)

A Life Beyond The Dream

What inspired you to keep your focus on music?

As a kid, I had a love for music and the action of making music and that curiosity just stayed.

I still love the ins and outs of…like the doldrums of making music: the mixing, the mastering, the little things – I just love it.

How did you get into the sax?

I started playing the sax when I was in the fifth grade. My older brother played saxophone when he was in fifth grade (when I was in second grade) and he brought it home to show my family - but I didn’t have any front teeth to play. So, I really wanted to play saxophone after that point when I got to fifth grade, because then I would finally have a chance to play. We didn’t have any money at the time and my Mom told me that if she rented the saxophone that I couldn’t quit... and here we are.

You also have a great singing voice – did both of these talents comes naturally to you or was it learned/perfected over time through practice and experience?

Every journey, whether big or small, starts with a dream. Dreams are often born from our innate curiosities and motivations, but they cannot be achieved by sheer will alone. It takes courage to take that first step and continually work towards our goals, despite whatever challenges life throws at us. Success stories of those who had the passion and perseverance to achieve their ambitions are inspiring. We share these moments to give hope, share important lessons and encourage others to reach their goals. Stevie Wonder once said, “Hold on to your dream, 'cause they're always worth having.” So, keep on dreaming and don’t give up hope. There isn’t a simple formula to achieve a life beyond the dream – as much like our fingerprints or DNA, every story is unique.

For James Casey, NY/LA-based multi-instrumentalist, singer, producer and composer, his journey began when he was a child. Born in Washington, D.C. to a musical family, and raised in Phoenix, AZ, James Casey’s Mom and Dad were both musicians and his grandfather (on his Dad’s side) was Marvin Gaye’s bass player.

It’s clear that talent and the love of music runs deep in his family!

Surrender to the Flow and The el Goose Times had the honor to speak with James about his life and journey as a musician so far: What was it like growing up in a musical household? Was there always music playing in your house?

There was music playing all the time. My Dad and Mom had a pretty extensive record collection, so they always had music playing, mostly gospel.

Were you exposed to a variety of genres growing up or to certain ones in particular?

Actually, it was mostly gospel. My Mom was a pastor and my Dad was a choir director, so the music we had in the house was gospel and soul-based growing up.

Was there a particular musical experience that let you know that music was going to be a big part of your life moving forward?

No. Honestly, it was just always there. There was never a point in my life where music wasn’t there - so I don’t know what it would feel like for me to actually go after music, in that way. You know what I mean?

Any instrument that you play that is not attached to your body cannot come naturally.

So, it only comes from experience and practice - all of that stuff.

However, I don’t really remember working on singing as a kid, it was just something that we always did. And because we always did, I just got better at it. You don’t really see the small steps of improvement when you’re a child – it’s just everything’s a big improvement, so you don’t see it that way.

If you could play with any musician in history, who would it be and why?

Stevie Wonder, because he’s the best and he’s perfect. He did it all and there’s nobody better than him at the thing that I want to do. Period.

Following in his family’s footsteps, James pursued his passion for music and attended Berklee College of Music for a Music Business degree. James moved to New York a few years later to continue to develop his passion for making music. A current member of the Trey Anastasio Band (now for over ten years), he has had the opportunity to perform, record, produce and write with many of the world's most influential artists.

What are your favorite collaborations prior to joining Trey Anastasio Band (TAB)?

Out of college, I had a group called 6Figures they were just my friends and some of the best musicians that I knew and still know to this day.

Once we all moved to New York, everybody kind of spread out to do amazing things within their own abilities! I started another group called Animus Rexx, which was another group of friends from school and it was one of my favorite things to be a part of. I like being in groups - it’s a lot more fun to collaborate than just be by yourself.

How did you end up joining TAB? Did Trey approach you personally?

In 2012, I was in Lettuce and Soulive. Soulive would do this thing at the Brooklyn Bowl called Bowlive. They would play for two weeks in March every year and in 2012 – this was the third year they had this event – Jennifer Hartswick was one of the special guests. I had no idea who she was, she had no idea who I was…we met there and after the first show she was like, “Yo, you’re good!” and I’m like, “Yo, you’re good! Where did you come from?”

(Chuckles) “You know, we should keep in touch!” “We definitely will!”

I saw her later that year, maybe like two months later at Jazz Fest. I was joking around with everybody, “This is the year that James getting gigs! I’m just letting y’all know I’m looking for every gig on Earth!” or whatever, and she was like, “Actually, you know…I already recommended you for something and I hope it works out!” I was like, “Cool!”

Cut to August that year, I get a phone call from Trey while he’s at soundcheck for Phish. He called me up and explains the whole thing to me on a voice memo. And I listen to it and go back to sleep because I didn’t know who Phish, who Trey was or who any of these people were. But then – I’ve told this story before – I called up Eric Krasno (a member of Lettuce and Soulive) to ask him who this dude was and what was going on. He literally told me to hang up the phone – he yelled at me: “Hang up the phone, call him back, say “yes” and then call me back to explain what’s going on.” So, that’s what happened!

Tell us about your relationship/friendships with everyone in TAB - you all seem like a real family up there! Is there anyone in the band that you click with most, more than others, or are you all equally close?

Yeah! I mean, when you tour with people for this long - I’ve been in this band for 10 years – you learn a lot about all of the idiosyncrasies, the ins and outs like the things that work and don’t work for them. And because of that, you kind of grow into…I guess the only word you could use is “family.” But to answer the question directly, the person I’m closest with is Natalie because we’re the closest in age, the youngest in the band and we were both living in New York when I joined the band - I’m closest with Nat. What's your favorite venue you've played with TAB (so far)?

The 9:30 Club. The 9:30 Club in D.C. – it’s my favorite venue to play that’s not an arena.

When you sell out the place, they give you cupcakes that say 9:30 on them. They’re like the hostess cupcakes but good. It’s great, I love that place!

The TAB touring schedule can be pretty demanding with a lot of long-distance travel over short periods of time - what do you and your bandmates do for fun on tour or do you mainly just work and then rest/travel?

That’s a very good question. Before the pandemic started, there was a whole lot more hanging out, going to shows on days off and just being around and seeing people.

Now, it’s a lot – I mean, everybody’s still worried about COVID. If we get COVID, if one of us gets COVID on tour, the tour could pretty much end up stopping - so we don’t do as much of that. But, you know, everybody has their own thing!

While I’m on tour, I do a lot of production, Jennifer has been doing a lot of interviews for her record and Natalie does a lot of teaching when she’s on the road.

Tell us about your journey fighting cancer thus far.

(Pause) It's been a journey. It’s been a little over a year and it’s been difficult. I keep telling people I’m in the best of the worstcase scenarios, because…things just keep working out in a way that it’s hard to believe.

The fact that I’m able to go on tour and be out and play and do all this stuff while I’m still going through treatment astounds me. I don’t even know how…I didn’t know this was going to be possible when I started chemo.

And I didn’t know this was going to be possible when I started the regimen that I’m on right now. But, I’m thankful of my family, my team, my partner and the good people at MSK (Memorial Sloan Kettering) to make it so I can continue while I’m being treated.

Are there any other musical projects outside of TAB that you’re currently working on that you’d like to share with our readers?

Okay, so here we go!

I have never put out any music under my name and this is going to be the first time I’ve ever done that – this year, it’s happening. I’m putting out a Christmas EP. This might be the first time I’ve actually said it out loud, but I’m releasing a Christmas EP this year and the first song is going to be released on November 14th. The proceeds from the vinyl sales are going directly to provide colon cancer screenings to people that aren’t insured.

We’re going to push that and it’s my first time releasing anything. Actually…I’ll be releasing another thing at the beginning of next year too. I’m a little nervous but we’ll see what happens! Two records!

A Brief History of Goose (aka “Goosestory”)

By JiveGoose It all happened so fast…or did it?

With a large portion of Goose’s steadily rising fanbase having just discovered the band’s music sometime during the past few years, it may surprise a few to learn that the Norwalk, CT outfit originally formed way back in 2014, with a lineup that included three out of the five current members: Rick Mitarotonda (guitar/vocals), Trevor Weekz (bass) and Ben Atkind (drums). Rick and Trevor both grew up in nearby Wilton, CT, and Rick would later meet Ben while they were students at Berklee College of Music. Peter Anspach (guitar/keyboards/vocals), who would join the band three years later, also grew up in Wilton. I’m hesitant to dismiss their early days, or their pre-Goose efforts for that matter (eg. Vasudo, which spawned many beloved tracks that remain in Goose’s regular rotation), but it was Peter’s addition to the band in December of 2017 that monumentally changed the group’s chemistry, musicality, and on-stage persona. It was truly a masterstroke - triggering a series of milestones, ultimately resulting in a seemingly overnight rise to stardom. But the truth is, the wheels were set in motion long before their famous 2019 Peach set.

Rick, the imperturbable face of the band, was playing guitar and penning lyrics during his schoolboy days in the suburban confines of the American Northeast. Even in those early days, Rick’s lyrics were introspective and personal, and representative of an innate approach to the craft that has continued to evolve, having resulted in an impressive catalog of songs that carry philosophical and emotional depth. And that catalog continues to expand (see this year’s Dripfield for the most recent evidence). Throughout high school and into college, each of the guys carried on with their pursuit of music, playing in various local bands, some of which, like Vasudo, Great Blue, and ElephantProof, are still active today.

But it was in 2014, with the help of ‘Coach’ Jon Lombardi, (whose larger-than-life presence and big brother / manager influence has been a key ingredient to the band’s growth and success), that Goose was brought to existence. They played their first show that year on September 27th at Jimmy’s Seaside Tavern in Stamford, CT. Fast forward a few years (and more than 150 shows) to late 2017 and, having paid a fair share of their dues while competently honing their skills, Goose added Peter to the lineup. Almost immediately, the band’s stock began to rise. Peter brought with him a number of invaluable attributes - most notably keyboard playing (a newly learned skill), fresh songs, stage presence, and audio/video production experience. By early 2019, the band’s confidence was at an all-time high, they were playing more shows than ever and live soundboard recordings were being released on a regular basis to their growing fanbase.

Then, on a hot July 2019 afternoon, on a smaller stage at the Peach Music Festival in Scranton, PA, Goose delivered a nearperfect set of music to an overflowing field of onlookers, many of whom were hearing those songs for the first time.

Soundboard audio was soon released, along with the full multi-cam video, and the flame that was already lit burst into an untamed wildfire. This blaze was the beginning of a period of rapid growth that continues to this day, stoked by a creative and energetic response to the coronavirus pandemic, smart business partnerships, thoughtful and effective selfpromotion, various genre-crossing artist collaborations, and above all else, putting out spectacular music and an infectious vibe night after night. Bingo Tour in June of 2020 marked the beginning of another new chapter with the addition of Jeff Arevalo (percussion). Now, with essentially a second drummer, the band’s sound is as full and as powerful as ever, while at the same time their group improvisational abilities continue to mature.

Goose always encourages fans to get involved - from Bingo Tour to their own Fred Festival activities - and they’ve gotten many of their own musical heroes to get involved as well, resulting in guest appearances by Dave Grippo, members of Dawes, Father John Misty, and, of course, Trey Anastasio at Radio City Music Hall. The band’s trajectory over the past few years has truly been something to behold, and I, among many others, have emphatically enjoyed the ride. No one knows what tomorrow holds, but we do know this: Goose is undeniably talented, and with this latest (and undoubtedly greatest) collaboration, they will surely continue to gain new fans at every show, and their future remains unquestionably bright.

Who's Who in Goose? A Primer.

By Andrew DaRosa (EGT) Rick Mitarotonda Guitar/Vocals Aliases: Snakes, Rich Is it Rick? Is it Rich? The jury is still out but one thing is for certain: “Snakes” is an über talented guitarist who serves as the driving force behind Goose. One of the three original founding members, Mitarotonda also serves as the primary songwriter for the band, having written most of the band’s original works. Mitarotonda along with drummer Ben Atkind and bassist Trevor Weekz formed Vasudo in 2012, which eventually gave way for Goose to form in 2014. In fact, many songs in Goose’s live repertoire were originally written for Vasudo such as “Hot Tea,” “Tumble” and “Factory Fiction.” While not touring the country with Goose, melting the fanbase’s collective faces, Mitarotonda can be seen playing with his fellow Goose bandmates in Vasudo and Orebolo.

Peter Anspach Guitar/Keys/Vocals Aliases: Handini, The WizKid If you’ve ever listened to a Goose show on Nugs, you can thank Peter Anspach for that. When he’s not stealing hearts as the multi-instrumental sensation onstage, Anspach is personally mixing shows for fans’ listening pleasure.

Anspach joined the group in 2017, and since then, has served as the unofficial face of Goose. He is a member of Great Blue and more recently, Vasudo. Similar to Mitarotonda, Anspach has been able to integrate material from Great Blue into Goose’s live repertoire with songs like “Yeti,” “Doc Brown” and “Pancakes.” Additionally, if you interact with Goose on social media, you’re more likely than not interacting with the great Handini.

Trevor Weekz Bass/Poetry Aliases: Tweekz He likes his chicken fried. He enjoys cold beer on a Friday night and jeans that fit just right. Though he doesn’t make much use of his mic on stage, when he does, it is perhaps the most prolific words you will hear from any musician to walk this planet. Trevor Weekz serves as an original member and has been laying down the bass of this “indie groove” band for the past eight years. Also a member of Vasudo, Weekz met Mitarotonda while growing up in Wilton, Conn. On rare occasions, Weekz will share his love of poetry with the crowd featuring the works of renowned poets like Robert Frost and Zac Brown.

Ben Atkind Drums Aliases: Spuds Rounding out the original three members of the band, Ben Atkind is not your typical jam band drummer. Atkind studied drumming at Berklee College of Music, specializing in jazz music. Once he met Mitarotonda, the rest was history and Atkind continues to serve as the heartbeat of Goose. Atkind is also the drummer for ElephantProof, a band that he formed while studying at Berklee with his college friends. He recently got engaged, so be sure to tell him congratulations if you run into him!

Jeff Arevalo Percussion Aliases: Jebb The newest member of Goose, percussionist Jeff Arevalo joined the group in 2020 as the band was beginning to see widespread success. Though stationed every night behind the kit with Goose, Arevalo is a man of many talents and can be seen playing the stand-up bass in the Goose off-shoot band, Orebolo, and drumming in Vasudo. Arevalo is also active in the Connecticut music community, performing with his band JEDD, as well as in Lucidity — A Tribute to Tame Impala.

Trevor Weekz Bassist Goose

When did you start playing bass? What appeals to you most about the instrument?

I started playing bass early in high school mostly dabbling at first - then started practicing rigorously around the age of 16. I’ve always felt that the bass wields great power in a band. This can be demonstrated most easily by the power of negative space using the instrument, such as leaving breath or not playing at all during certain sections of a song, then observing the impact when it returns. It has often been considered somewhat of the link between drums and the other instruments as well, which could be argued in many cases, I’d say.

Some of my favorite aspects is that it gets people to dance and how much you can feel the sound of the instrument; there is not much that compares to getting hit in the chest with a pillowy bass tone through a powerful PA. Who are some of your personal musical influences, bassists or otherwise?

Are you mostly self-taught or did you take lessons?

My biggest musical influence is, without a doubt, Peter Castaldi. I learned a ton from him early on about the fundamentals of communication between humans with a musical instrument.

When heading down the pathway of life, there are an infinite number of possibilities hidden within every choice we make. Choosing which paths to take on our journey through the great beyond are informed by our innate desires, environment and influences. These memories and visions of a membrane vast provide a foundation for our journey - similar to how the bass guitar harmonically provides a structure that music is built upon.

An often-overlooked instrument, the bass not only provides the foundation to music, but it also helps establish the rhythmic, melodic and harmonic direction of where a song can go. Robert Challoner once wrote in his 1880 book History of the Science and Art of Music (p.283): "The bass part ... is, in fact, the foundation upon which the melody rests and without which there could be no melody." The resonance and power from the bass help establish and drive the jam.

A great bassist alone has the power to move an entire audience with the right grooves. On a similar note, a unique bass line can establish a song’s hook and identity.

In the case of the band Goose, they have done a great job forging their own path and establishing their identity - in not only the jam band space, but music as a whole, with sit-ins from artists outside the jam band realm like Big Boi, Margo Price and Lucius. Trevor Weekz, bassist of Goose, is a constant within the history and evolution of this band, alongside Rick Mitarotonda and Ben Atkind. The el Goose Times and Surrender to the Flow had a rare opportunity to speak with Trevor as we discuss a variety of concepts which relate and contrast: First of all, thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us – it’s truly an honor!

Of course, I think what you have created with The el Goose Times is amazing. It’s truly a staple of the community, same with Surrender to the Flow.

Tell us a little about you: from your life growing up in Wilton, up to your life as a touring musician today.

Growing up in Wilton was quite an experience, because we were in the woods with lots of free time - but we also had easy access to NYC. The town itself was also saturated with talented musicians of all ages. I remember being in high school and hearing some of the older kids play and finding them to be inspiring and a goal to aim for, in terms of where I wanted to progress.

When I was learning bass and basically had no clue what I was doing, it was great to have this wide range of people to play with. Making sounds with musicians more experienced than you is definitely beneficial when getting a lay of the land.

I lived in Wilton my entire life until going to school in Burlington. I was in VT for 5-6 years and then I moved around a couple more times. Now, I'm rooted back in CT; it’s a nice place to rest and recharge when off the road.

Beyond that there was much to learn in regards to theory and groove, as well as knowing the role of the instrument and ways to best compliment a song or propel an improvisation.

Throughout high school, I had a teacher Tod Baharian who mainly taught guitar but gave me a strong head-start on bass. I was always appreciative of the deep and often profound conversations we had as well - either before, or after our sessions. I found out years later that he also taught Peter back in the day! I then went to college at the University of Vermont minored in music studying Jazz and Motown bass and various theory/history.

What are your favorite past times when you’re not touring?

As of recent, I’ve spent a lot of time exploring NYC and watching all the different humans go about their days, while pondering my own.

Otherwise, I like to spend time outside and relaxing by a river. Also phases of DOTA2.

Do you have a favorite movie and/or TV show?

My favorite movie is Dances With Wolves. It’s fantastic. If you haven’t seen it, you should.

Kevin Costner is a legend, and absolutely crushed it with this movie as he directed, produced, and starred in it. On a sidenote, it has been a life goal of mine that, later in life, I will be a guest professor at a University teaching a class called “What is the Cost?” - which will be a deep dive into the life and work of Kevin Costner himself.

How long have you known the other guys in Goose? It seems like a few of you go pretty far back, especially you and Rick.

I’ve known Rick the longest. We first played a show together in 2007, just after I graduated High School.

He had a family friend’s New Year’s Eve party that we played together with Peter Castaldi, and Max Porteus. I believe a recording still exists to this day. Over the years we played music together on occasion in various locations in our college years, culminating in a strong push with Vasudo, then after a brief break, Goose.

I met Ben during the formation of Vasudo, which we played beside in for a good portion of 2012, and then in Goose starting in 2014. Word on the street is that he likes potatoes, can confirm.

I first met Jeff when I visited Rich at school, I believe in 2009. We hung out for the weekend and booked various times at rehearsal rooms to go play in. Most of these sessions turned out to have a certain magic about them that we still talk about to this day. One particular comical note was this one guitar player we were with paused us from starting up one day, after we had all our rigs ready to go, to turn to me and ask me to elaborate on my life story/background which threw me by surprise, to say the least. It made for a good laugh.

I met Peter right around when Goose was getting its first legs. We jammed with Peter Castaldi, aka “the LINK”/“Yoda”..etc, and had a blast. I then ended up filling in on bass for Great Blue on several shows over the next couple years, which was always an amazing time.

Of note I would say: feeling the breeze by the beach late at night in an amphitheater at Playing in the Sand 2020, watching lightning come in from the distance above The Caverns, and looking up at the massive sea of people at Red Rocks.

Also, I’ve known Coach by far the longest, we’ve been great friends since high school.

What are some of the biggest challenges that come with touring, especially as the band grows?

What has the band’s rise over the past three or so years been like from your perspective, going from clubs to arenas? To add, what are some of your favorite venues that you’ve played so far?

The past few years have been an interesting ride to say the least; starting in 2019 when we saw a strong inflection point of growth. Everything seemed to be happening at a rapid pace. Seeing shows actually start to sell out for the first time ever was exciting... for example, when we were discussing some aspects of Goosemas that year, I think the number of 400 people was thrown around as something that would feel great and make sense with the particular venue and support acts. Not long after this conversation, the show ended up selling out many weeks in advance at 1100 people. It was hard to believe at first.

More and more occurrences like this, and situations where we upgraded venue sizes for a particular show, were happening until things took a pretty substantial turn when everything shut down. This gave us the time to play catch up on some of the recording that we hadn’t found the time to do, as well as button up some aspects on the infrastructure side.

With all growth comes new challenges that are hard to foresee, especially when it happens quickly. I often find there to be new pressures as the venues move up in size, however each time I feel it moves the bar. Ever since we played our first arena show, it feels much more comfortable and less daunting to go and play big theaters afterwards. It’s great because it allows us to be more relaxed, which is ideal for putting on the best performances that we’re capable of.

In terms of favorite venues, I often lean towards anything outdoors. Something about being out in the fresh air and soaking up the vibe of the surrounding nature adds to the uniqueness of any given show.

The challenges certainly seem to evolve as the years go by. I am truly grateful for our team and crew around us... they are absolute legends and amazing people - and have made many aspects of being on the road feel lighter.

Still the essentials are required, such as maintaining a good diet and getting enough sleep.

Staying healthy both mentally and physically is a priority which allows me to give everything I possibly can while out on stage. I feel that we owe it to ourselves and the fans and everyone behind the scenes as well who work so hard and travel far and wide to make the shows happen.

Tell us about the song you wrote, “Wysteria Lane,” and the inspiration behind it.

The underlying concept behind the song is really about exploring the thin layer between our perceived reality, and what potentially - and most likely - exists just beyond that perception to all the places you can go, if you are open to new experiences and the infinite realms one can tap into.

Let’s talk Phish and TAB: what was your first Phish show and your first TAB show?

Do you have a particular favorite?

My first Phish show was the Hampton reunion show in 2009. That was a truly magical moment. The memory of the opening notes of “Fluffhead” is certainly goosebump-inducing.

I can’t remember the specific date for my first TAB show, but it was when I was attending college at UVM, and they played at Higher Ground. The whole night rode on such a high energy and felt genuinely positive.

What was it like playing with Trey Anastasio at Radio City Music Hall? It felt like a huge moment for not only the audience, but for the band as well.

Playing with Trey at Radio City was incredibly surreal. It’s one of those moments where you question if it’s really happening and the reality really sets in weeks later when you’ve had time to process it all. So much was happening in that moment and over the course of the weekend... it takes time to really wrap your head around it.

I’ve spent many an hour listening to recordings of Trey play, or live and in-person, that it was quite a trip to hear him onstage with his signature tone through our monitors, while playing off of the band.

What was going through your mind when you learned you would be on the road with TAB? This tour feels like an opportunity for some really cool musical jams and collaborations.

Hearing about the tour just adds to the list of news we receive that makes the entire journey seem like a dream these days. For many years we weren’t really focused on what could eventually be, but instead just put our heads down and worked hard at creating something we cared deeply about and wanted to share with other people. It feels great to have that pay off with opportunities to play legendary venues or collaborate with incredible musicians.

The entirety of TAB in its current form consists of highly talented players all who seem to come with a great attitude and positive air about them. I am looking forward to what collaborations may come forth on and off stage - we shall see what happens!

Do you have any parting thoughts you’d like to leave with the community? Again, we sincerely appreciate your time and really look forward to the tour (and beyond!)

I think I would just reiterate the notion that what you put out into the world will attract a likewise energy back to you. Try to be welcoming of those around you at shows and create a safe community for people to enjoy themselves. I always love hearing about how people met lifelong friends or partners at concerts, connecting them beyond that evening alone.

Nothing Goes Together Quite Like Peanut Butter and Chocolate

And Goose’s crunchy, funky, butter sound—topped with chopped peanuts” exclaimed the announcement video for TAB and Goose’s fall tour collaboration, a parody of a classic Reese’s peanut butter cup commercial from 1981.

One fan got an early tip on the breaking news… It was an average day for Gabby Waxman and her fiancée, Greg. “I was working at my office, but Greg had been home all day. He left to go to band practice with everything normal on the home front. I got home about an hour after Greg left, and a Walkman was wrapped up on the door handle. There was no note or information to indicate where this came from. My initial thought was, ‘Well this is fucking weird… who leaves a Walkman on someone's door?’”

She brought the Walkman inside, opened it up, and found a tape that said Trey Anastasio Band. “I sent a picture to a group of phishy friends. It was at that point one of my buddies had the realization that it was the tape from the video. We knew it was someone who knew us and wanted us to have it.”

So, who is Gabby Waxman and why did this historic relic end up at her door?

Gabby has been to 106 Phish shows, her first being 11/28/2003 at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY. “I first heard about Phish when I was twelve or thirteen years old from my older stepbrother who was in college. I think the first song he played for me was 'Wading in the Velvet Sea.' I didn't really get into them until my Junior year of high school. One of my best friends was a huge fan, and convinced me to go to the show. The rest was phishtory!"

Gabby grew up in New York but ended up living in New Orleans for thirteen years after attending Tulane. “I love the food, music, people, and culture of New Orleans to stay away for too long. While living in New Orleans, I worked in hospitality and eventually became the sommelier/wine director for Galatoire's (a Grand Dame restaurant of NOLA). I moved back to New York for a career opportunity to work for a wine importer and distributor.”

Gabby’s relocation was divinely timed for a few good reasons. She moved back the week before the Baker’s Dozen and was able to go to all thirteen shows. Not long after, she met Greg on a dating app. “He swiped right because of the Phish and Grateful Dead lyrics in my profile, and I swiped right because of his Bowlive shirt and saxophone pictures. As it turned out, we lived ten minutes away from each other in Brooklyn Heights and had been to about seventeen of the same Phish shows without knowing each other.

We started dating in August 2019, moved in together during COVID, and got engaged on a trip to New Orleans earlier this year.”

Gabby and Greg now live in Clinton Hill with their sweet puppy, Porter, named after George Porter, Jr. Her near twenty-year fandom not only brought her and her soulmate together, but also introduced her to an incredible community. “There are so many fun moments and tour memories. It's why after 106 shows I continue to go back for more! Dancing and splashing in the ocean in Mexico is an absolute blast!

Everyone should experience that level of joy once in their life. During the Baker’s Dozen, most of our crew was going to all thirteen shows. Night one we established a meet up spot. For night thirteen, we posted in Phish Tour 2014 (PT14) that we would be having a medal ceremony at the spot to give medals to anyone who went to all thirteen shows.

During the YEMSG New Year’s run that same year, we made another announcement on PT14 that we’d be awarding perfect attendance certificates to anyone who did seventeen of seventeen at the garden that said ‘Congratulations! You're a Wook!’ To this day, whenever we're at MSG, everyone knows exactly where to meet. That spot has spiraled out to so many different friend groups. I find so much joy in how Phish brings people together and how friends of friends of friends of friends have now just become friends.”

All of this context clearly explains the why to our mystery, but leaves one burning question— how did the Walkman find its way to her? “I posted about it in a few groups hoping for any leads or clues. Nothing really useful came to be. We even put a note on our door asking whoever did it to please knock on our door as we'd love to thank them. No one came forward. Two weeks later we were packing up our car getting ready to go out of town for Labor Day. As Greg was going to lock the door, one of our neighbors was coming in and told Greg it was him who did it! He said he works for Phish's management company and had noticed our Phish gear so he left us that gem.”

The moment of truth: What is on that tape?!

“We tried to play it, but it was blank! We still have it in our apartment. It's not on display yet, but it's truly a relic we will cherish for a long time as it's one of a kind!”

Bonus Recipe: ~Vegan Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake~

We caught up with Will Thresher, longtime friend of Vasudo/Goose and creative for the band who produced the tour announcement video, to learn more about what went into bringing it to life:

LG & JC: How did the vision for this video come about?

1 1/2 cups unbleached white flour 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. Salt 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1 cup cold water or chilled brewed coffee 2 tsp. pure vanilla extract 2 tbsp. cider vinegar

WT: The idea came straight from Jason Colton from Trey’s creative team. We brainstormed on how the bands should interact, we threw around the idea of “Goose running into TAB” and how that would work, but what made the most sense was the original concept. What’s better than peanut butter and chocolate?

LG & JC: Where was it taped?

2 oz. unsweetened chocolate 1/4 cup peanut butter 3 to 4 tbsp. water 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract 1 cup confectioners' sugar

WT: We shot this in Norwalk, CT. I walked around taking reference photos/video and we drilled those down based on a number of factors.

We had two locations picked at the end but ultimately settled on the one in the video. It had the look we were going for and it was semi-private.

LG & JC: Folks might not know what goes into making a thirty second video, so how long did it take?

WT: Our timeline was quick, so from first meetings to shooting was about two weeks. The day I got the call I was leaving for Cape Cod for a week in a few days. I was sourcing, planning, renting, etc. from the beach. Running up to the parking lot to get service for calls and sending files. Not the worst “office" environment. Unfortunately, that gave me very little time when I got back so it was a wild week. Amongst other things, I couldn’t find a jar I liked so I modeled one from stills from the commercial and 3D-printed it, as well as the chocolate bar (a real one would melt). Jeff McCallister from Trey’s team was able to source the Walkmans. Scott Sweitzer (who did the "Hungersite" video) ran the camera. Eamon Redpath did sound.

Both did a killer job. All together it was a small team, but we worked well together and made it happen with no headaches. Day of shoot was smooth, everyone had experience working together at this point so we were able to shoot in about three to four hours.

LG & JC: Who did the incredible wardrobe styling?

WT: Trey and Rick’s outfits were sourced by Trey’s stylist, who really nailed it. The rest of the outfits were sourced by Carina Immer. Peter was in fact the candy maker which made his outfit easy!

Ingredients:

1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Generously oil an 8-inch square or round baking pan, dust with sifted cocoa, or line bottom of baking pan with parchment paper. Or you can use a muffin tray with paper cupcake cups.

2. Sift flour, cocoa, soda, salt, and sugar.

In another bowl, combine oil, water or coffee and vanilla. Pour liquid into dry and mix until smooth.

3. Add vinegar and stir briefly; baking soda will begin to react with vinegar, leaving pale swirls in batter. Without wasting time, pour batter into prepared pan or cupcake tray.

4. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes (10-12 for cupcakes) and check with a toothpick.

When it comes out clean, the cake is ready. When cool, transfer to plate for cake and for cupcakes, move to a wire rack to cool.

What IS better than peanut butter and chocolate?!

Not much, so we’re sharing a recipe you can whip up before hitting the road or to enjoy while couch touring. As most of Goose is vegan and Trey is too, this is a plant-based recipe so decadent that omnivores will love it too!

5. To make the frosting: In a heavy saucepan, melt chocolate over medium heat. Beat together peanut butter, water, and vanilla until smooth. Beat in confectioners’ sugar, and add melted chocolate, mixing until blended. Spread frosting on cooled cake/cupcakes.

By Windi Noble (STTF) Twenty-one years ago, I walked into Polaris Amphitheater (July 24, 2001) in Columbus, Ohio—I was young, excited and uncertain what to expect. Phish had been on hiatus since October of 2000, and I was longing for a similar experience. Previously a sextet, the 2001 TAB line-up had expanded to an Octet, and I was curious about what may unfold with Trey and a full horn section; this and the possibility of hearing a Phish song were alluring. The band comprised Trey, of course, bassist Tony Markellis, drummer Russ Lawton, keyboardist Ray Paczkowski, saxophonist Dave Grippo, tenor saxophonist/flutist Russell Remington, trombone player Andy Moroz, and trumpet player Jennifer Hartswick. This version of TAB was the band’s rawest form, being birthed right before our eyes, and it was so effing good.

I’m not going to bore you with a song-by-song commentary.

I will, however, share some of my personal highlights. The whole set came in many well-developed jams, and not a single song clocked in at less than ten minutes. Let’s be honest—twenty-two years ago was a grip, so I found a recording of the show and gave it a listen once, then again, and even a third time, when it fueled a living room getdown workout… that Last Tube got me.

Alive Again really hit me, both lyrically and the harmonizing with the horn section that adds so much depth to the song. Reflecting back, I feel like this was probably the first time in my music-enthusiast career that the horn section was the focal point of any jam band, and I

By Neal L. (EGT) Although I spend a lot of my time these days thinking and talking about improvisation, the moment that truly hooked me on Goose ironically wasn’t a transcendent, mind-bending jam. There are many memories from the “Halloween” run at South Farms in November 2020 that made it special.

Driving through a cow pasture to the parking lot stirred up nostalgia of high school keg parties I went to as a teenager growing up only a few miles away. The debuts of “Lily’s Tiger,” “The Empress of Organos,” and “Earthling or

was in love. The richness and jubilance of the horns added so much to each melody. Trey’s solo was delicate and trickled into its apex—where the horns, yet again, thoughtfully brought us back from the jam with a strong finish. On to Last Tube—you know, the second cousin to Phish’s First Tube and Tube. This was yet another TAB original with a super-funky vibe that really made me come alive for nearly another twenty minutes—TAB was serving up all of the “dance party” vibes, and my body wouldn’t stop moving and boppin’. The saxophone jam was everything—can we get a Tube triad in 2023? Someone call the band and phone in my request, pretty please.

The second set was a heater, coming out the gate with Burlap Sack and Pumps and its myriad peaks and valleys. At nearly sixteen minutes, this was one heck of a way to let the crowd know they weren’t effing around. Tony was the real MVP of this song—that bass line didn’t give up and was well supported by a heavy brass funk line. Sand hit hard and heavy at twenty-two minutes, and I remember it was at this point that I was 100% sold on the band. Sand is, was, and will always be one of my favorite TAB songs. My head and heart knew at that moment that I was in for TAB for life…or as long as they continued to play publicly. Don’t get me wrong—Phish rages Sand, but it is truly amazing and something special with the addition of a horn section contributing to this cohesive magic that will always make this my favorite of all of the songs.

Through the years, I have always enjoyed TAB shows, and I will forever treasure the early years. Until the next show…

Alien?” were an unexpe cted treat. The turning point in my love for this band, however, came on the second night of the run.

After a blazing version of “Arrow” replete with dissonant and dark themes and a brief “Doobie Song” cooldown, Goose launched into an explosive “Slow Ready,” that stands alongside the coolest musical moments I’ve ever witnessed. The combination of audience energy (despite the social distancing), outstanding laser light show, and deft

peak builds made the performance far greater than the sum of its parts. It was the type of pure magic that I had experienced only a few times in many years of attending concerts. After turning to the soundboard and cheering Andrew Goedde, I decided I would do my best to never miss another thing this band and crew produced. After 31 shows, Goose holds a place in my heart as large as any band has ever held and I hope to catch many more.

I won at auction, at the inaugural Bonnaroo, a 16”x20” B&W photograph of Trey, wearing a suit, holding his guitar. I paid more than I cared to admit, and had a few friends laugh while I babied it (on its cardboard backing) through the rest of that festival and home. When I had it framed the woman in the store nodded, said, “that’s a nice print.” and seemed to recognize him. I felt justified in my expense. When I got the framed Trey and receipt back home, I found she’d written in the ‘description’ space: Eric Clapton photo.

I’ve been seeing Trey longer than seeing Phish by one show, and it’s a show that matters. I’d agreed to take summer 1999 ‘off’ and go on Phish tour with the man I’d later marry, and to get me familiar with the style, say. I was at the Murat Theatre in Indianapolis, 5/4/1999. I had no idea what to expect.

My musical tastes to that point included a lot of Dead (though never live), Beatles, The Band, Dylan, ska and skate punk, Broadway musicals, Floyd/Zeppelin, and yeah: Eric Clapton.

That first set of Trey stays with me. My impression of him was just a guy with a guitar. He sang I’ll Never Hear Your Voice Again and then some dog song and everyone cheered. That was the thing. My ‘introduction’ was watching Trey and his audience, all at once, no distractions, no band. He joked about the titles of songs. He didn’t name a song Minestrone, but then he played another soup song: Bathtub Gin. Phish opened with Gin the first time I saw them, 6/30/1999, two months later, and he hooked me at my first Phish show, too. When Trey played Gin alone at the Murat, the audience sang for him the baaa-da-da-da-da parts and he grinned and played rhythm guitar, back at them. I saw the very first Back on the Train that night too, a song that means the world to me. All of Phish means the world to me, and it all started with Trey, backing his audience, on his guitar.

The second set was Trey, Russ and Tony and it flat-out blew my mind. I loved seeing Trey become part of a band. He’s a musician who prioritizes meshing with other musicians, be it Phish, TAB, or his audience humming Gin. Trey Anastasio won me over with his vulnerability and his listening. Standing all alone holding a microphone like during Ziggy Stardust or fronting weird brand-new stuff, aka Wingsuit–it’s that guy with his guitar who slays me and stays with me, keeps me coming back. He’s brave on stage. More so than Clapton. And the band I first saw him with, second set, Murat, 5/4/1999, was Russ and Tony, the TAB Trio. Not Mike, Page and Fish. That came later.

TAB changed my life, just cuz they were first.

And then Phish changed my life proper for sure, yo.

But really all along it was Trey, him holding that guitar.

Here I sit, with my cup of black coffee, the morning I will be attending (for a second consecutive year) a hometown show in Dallas, Texas by the bird band from Connecticut. How can I be so lucky? How can one band bring about such a whirlwind of emotional force and representation in the space of one’s mind? The answer could be complicated, if we choose to address it as such; or, perhaps, it could be as simple as the collective balance they themselves seem to exude onstage. Whatever the case, one thing I know to be true; the answer lies in the heart of the individual fan. And this? This is but one fan’s experience, amidst a myriad of thousands that have journeyed on a similar flight plan. This, is how Goose, the band, changed my life.

In January 2020, my good buddy and fellow music brother since high school told me about this one band that people were beginning to talk about within the jam band world. The band, still squarely in its formative years with a momentous upward trajectory after a raucous Summer 2019 festival circuit, was named Goose. Immediately, Alive and Well was streaming over my preferred music provider, and “Arcadia” drew me in, as it is wont to do with so many. But soon after, as history will show, life got tricky (we all know what happened later that spring).

It just so happens, that with the discovery of a new band came the discovery of a new challenge in my life, which quickly found the band on the back burner. Truth be told, it was at this time that I started to come face to face with my mental instability and the person I needed to become; for not only myself, but those that are most important in my life; my wife and daughter. Some serious soul searching was in order.

Tough love was served almost daily. Looking in the mirror became a hurdle to overcome regularly. And, if we’re being completely transparent and vulnerable here; I was failing. Miserably.

The daily challenges became daily demons. The things that brought me joy served only as targets of my insatiable appetite for selfdestruction. I was wandering listless and devoid of any true happiness. It was in the middle of the pandemic that I took my first steps in recovering my identity, my passions and my role as a life partner with my first attempt at counseling and mental care, which was a challenge in itself.

Soon, I was starting to make peace with the plight of my mental instability as I would learn to live with the imperfections that made me, well… me. My marriage became stronger. My foundation as a father became steadfast. And my passion for music grew more fervent, in particular for a band called Goose.

Everywhere I turned; there was a significant breakthrough with my bride; then a memory made with my daughter; and then came a lyric from the band that resonated within each moment. There were tumbles along the way, and the turbulence still rears its ugly head from time to time. It’s consistently hard work, and a constant journey.

David Byrne, of the Talking Heads, writes in his book How Music Works: “Music resonates in so many parts of the brain that we can’t conceive of it being an isolated thing. It’s whom you were with, how old you were, and what was happening that day.”

For me; the course of my life and the timing of my implicit afflictions; all led to this moment where the expression of my progress and newfound happiness was exemplified through the extended jam elements that happened to come on the heels of such compositions as “All I Need” and the spiritual musings of “Madhuvan.” And, at the end of the day, while our stories are all different, we all seek to claim our own inherent journeys alongside the gaggle with the bird band from Connecticut. This, is why I love the Goose community, and this is how the band changed my life.

Mike and I drove to Detroit from 3pm - 4am through a snowstorm for our first Goose show…without a single clue as to what adventure was actually beginning. It should have taken 6 hours from Rochester, but the storm was so bad we could only go 30mph the whole way. It was worth it though to start a 6 city, 7 day run with Spafford. Saturday, 1/13/18, we got to El Club and walked up to the edge of the stage to hold down a space on the “rail” next to some Spafford friends.

At the time of doors there were maybe a dozen people inside. A very excited man was setting up a camera behind me and Mike. He introduced himself to us and explained it was for the opening band, Goose. We shared that we had noticed the same band would be opening up for all 6 shows we would be at and that we were excited to check them out! Jon (aka Coach) asked us if we could just “keep an eye on the camera” for him and we agreed. By the time Goose took the stage, the room had filled in and the energy was high. Now, the set list for this night is a little iffy, but I’m pretty sure they opened with Lead the Way and then went into Indian River. That is where I was hooked. I turned to Mike and said “this band is good!!“ and he said “Jess, we’re not going to start following around a smaller band”. The documented set list for this show also includes Jive I, Crosseyed, Arcadia, and Love Light. By the end of that first set Mike was hooked too. Over the course of the next 6 days we saw Goose in 5 different cities in 3 states.

Now, over 4 years later, it’s wild to reminisce about our journey and the growth we’ve experienced with this band and community. From small bars/venues in the middle of nowhere to sold out shows at monumental venues like Radio City Music Hall and Red Rocks, we’ll follow this band everywhere we can. And yeah, we’ll keep an eye on the camera tripod too.

Summercamp Sunday May 28, 2017, I attended my first and only (thus far) TAB show on the final day of this marathon of a festival. Earlier in the weekend I was fortunate to see Mike Gordon’s band, Primus/Lennon Claypool Delirium, Gov't Mule, Moe. and countless other acts. My crew decided that we should camp out in line Wednesday night in order to secure premium camping on Thursday and boy did the party begin there. Needless to say, I was not feeling my greatest by the time Trey took the stage, while the audience was baking in the heat at the Sunshine stage.

I was very new to Phish at this time, as I had only been to four shows, all fall tour 2016, but was very excited to see Trey is a different element than my recent obsession with Phish. Looking back at 2017 it is quite impressive that Trey was not only preparing for a small Phish summer run and the now infamous Baker’s Dozen shows but also playing a tour heavy spring and summer with TAB. I managed to sneak up near the front for the first set as I was the only one in my crew who was really into Phish, which made navigating the massive crowd fairly easy. The first set opened with Gotta Jibboo, Mozambique and Sand. I was glad to recognize two Phish staples right off that bat and I very much enjoyed hearing Sand with backing horns and vocals. Soul Rebel, a Bob Marley cover, which as someone who is not very familiar with Trey’s side projects, was a very pleasant surprise. Burlap Sacks and Pumps is a very fun and simple song which I have really enjoyed while relistening to this show. Up next was TAB staple Cayman Review which of course brought a lot of energy down the home stretch of the first set. At this point in the show I was feeling a little faded from a long weekend of shenanigans and moved towards the back of the field to rest and get a head start back to camp during set break.

What stood out to me in the second set were mostly the Phish tunes that make regular TAB appearances. I definitely teared up during Ocelot when thinking about how much Trey’s music had meant to me, even at that time.

While Plasma was not jammed out it was very interesting to hear it with a horn section, and I think it really adds depth to the song. Mr. Completely and First Tube (naturally) closed out the second. Other songs of note were the set opener Night Speaks to a Woman, Simple Twist Up Dave and Goodbye Head.

Fittingly, TAB debuted Midnight Rider to honor Gregg Allman who had passed away the day prior.

The encore included the Gorillaz Clint Eastwood and closed with the Irish traditional tune The Parting Glass which was a beautiful way to wrap up the Sunday set.

After re-listening to this show multiple times I have a new appreciation for TAB and hope to see them again soon. I am very much looking forward to listening to the TAB/Goose shows this winter and while unfortunately I will not be able to attend any of the dates, we are currently driving down to Kansas City to see Goose while finishing this article.

He also rescues alpacas from around the country and was trained at the C.I.A., Culinary Institute of America. I love Phish, my name is ChrisFromLancaster, Deadhead transplant from 1995. So, he and I decide to hit a TAB/Goose stop together in Reading, PA. The following is a look inside our brains as we mentally prepare for the Taboose tour. Who will convert? Plus, our thoughts on the real milky jams, signature delicious music, the crunchy funky butter sound topped with chopped peanuts, and the sit-in that was and that will be.

Will we survive the greatest smash up of all time?

C: Have you ever seen Phish or TAB live?

D: I have not seen either group live. I watched a couple of Trey’s Beacon streams during COVID but that is it for me. Have you seen Goose?

C: Only a couple Beacon streams… wrong! I saw Goose when they opened for Spafford in winter 2018 at the Chameleon Club here in Lancaster. That club recently got demolished.

I wasn’t sure who they were at the time.

C: Will you have a mustache for the show?

D: Yes, I have had a mustache for two years now and the decision to grow it may or may not have been influenced by Goose.

C: Who is Goose?

D: Okay, you’ve got Rick (Rich, Snakes) on vocals and lead guitar. He is smooth as butter and has one of the best voices in the scene.

Peter (Handini) on keys, vocals, and guitar.

Pete is a jack-of-all trades and he brings a lot of crowd interaction and entertainment.

Trevor (Tweekz) on bass. He is super reliable and is consistently in the right place at the right time. Oh, and if you’re lucky he might read poetry. Ben (Spuds) on drums. Ben knows how to lay down a groove and keep it in the pocket. His instant responsiveness to Rick and Peter’s lead lines is stunning. Jeff (Jeb, El Jefe) on percussion and vocals. Jeff is the most recent addition adding a sweet extra layer of nougat. He has also settled in adding harmonies. I feel like you should answer this about TAB. The first stop on this exciting tour is the small and friendly coastal city of Portland, Maine at the Cross Insurance Arena, which used to be known as the Cumberland County Civic Center. Phish has played here a few times, most recently in 2016. It’s a great little arena that was built back in 1977 and it’s the home arena for the Maine Mariners AA hockey team. The floor is open and spacious, and you’ll love it. It’s a great place to start this collaborative TAB and Goose tour.

The second venue on this eight-show tour is the Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Massachusetts. Neither band has played this venue before, although Trey did visit it with Oysterhead in 2001. It’s owned and operated by the University of Massachusetts Lowell and it opened in 1998. It’s named for the late U.S. Senator Paul Tsongas, who was a native of this area. It’s rather small and cozy but is another excellent setting for this unique tour.

Mohegan Sun Arena is the only venue on this tour that both Goose and Trey have played before, although TAB has never played here in the past. Trey was here with Phish for two nights in 2019 and Goose, who are Connecticut natives, played here in February of this year for their rescheduled Goosemas celebration. This is one of the larger venues this collaboration will hit on this tour and it’s sure to be a good time; casino shows always are, and Connecticut Goose fans are sure to be in attendance in full force.

The Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls, more commonly known as the Glens Falls Civic Center, was the site of Phish’s Halloween 1994 show in which they did their first cover album – The Beatles’ White Album. Phish has returned to this venue once since, in 2013. It was built back in 1979 and is a traditional hockey arena that’s just perfect for concerts. It’s one of the smallest venue these bands will play this tour, so get ready for an up-close-and-personal, intimate experience here.

UPMC Events Center is the newest venue of this tour; it just opened in 2019. It’s even smaller than Glens Falls Civic Center and is part of Robert Morris University. Although it’s owned and operated by the university and was built primarily to house its men and women’s NCAA Division One basketball and women’s volleyball teams, it’s already hosted quite a few concerts in its short lifetime including big names like The Doobie Brothers and Bob Dylan. Although the tour takes quite a zigzag west to hit this venue, it’s sure to be a good time for all who make the trek to attend.

The EagleBank Arena is the southernmost stop on this eight-show tour and TAB and Goose’s visit to it is a return to a much larger venue after tiny ones in Glens Falls and Moon. This arena was built in 1985 and is part of George Mason University. Phish played here back in 1994 and still holds the record for biggest concert attendance at this venue to this day – 10,356 fans attended that night. Will TAB and Goose beat that? I guess we’ll have to see.

Syracuse’s War Memorial Arena – currently named Upstate Medical Arena - has hosted Phish twice – once in 1994 and again in 2009. Like other venues on this tour, it’s a hockey arena, but it’s the oldest venue of the tour; it opened in 1951, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. It’s architecturally beautiful and is a prime example of World War I, World War II, and Aroostook commemorative style. It’s been renovated twice since its construction, but it still holds the energy of the many bands that have played here over the years including KISS, Aerosmith, the Grateful Dead, Queen, Bruce Springsteen, and even Elvis. It was very hot inside when Phish played there in 2009, so keep that in mind when thinking about what to wear – the TAB/Goose show here is sure to be a heater in more ways than one.

This tour comes to a close in Reading, Pennsylvania at the Santander Arena. This place was built in 2001 on the site of the former Astor Theater, a historic movie theater that was built in 1928 and closed in 1974, and then sat vacant for two decades. It was demolished to make way for this new arena, but in the construction of Santander Arena, pieces of that theater were saved and reused, including an ornate chandelier and its gates. Keep an eye out for them in the venue hallways; their Art Deco beauty is not to be missed. Phish played at this venue just once in 2013 and it’s a lovely space with an open floor, and plenty of room for all. Both bands are sure to blow the roof off this place during the closing show of this very exciting tour.

Portland, Maine

England Quilt Museum is lovely for patchwork

Glens Falls, New York Glens Falls is a historic city that was the site of several battles during both the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War, but Phish fans know it best as the place where Phish began their Halloween tradition of playing entire albums with the Beatles’ White Album in 1994. The Hyde Collection Art Museum and Historic Home is the main attraction in town if you like art; if you’d rather learn about history, hit up the Chapman Historical Museum instead. If you’ll be staying in the area after the show, check out the Adirondacks Welcome Center, where the helpful and enthusiastic staff will help you get excited about everything north of town. There’s a great playground there if you’re traveling with little ones. If you have time, head up I-87 twenty minutes to visit Lake George and to see for yourself why it’s called the Queen of American Lakes.

If you’d rather stay out by the show, though, you’ll probably like one of the nearby nature-based attractions like Settlers Cabin Park, Robin Hill Park, the Fern Hollow Nature Center, or the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden. Just because it’s November in the northeast doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get outside for the day before you head inside to rage TAB and Goose!

Fairfax, Virginia

Fairfax, Virginia is part of the Washington, DC metropolitan area, and if it wasn’t an area that’s so rough with traffic, I’d recommend that you head on into DC to go to one of the countless fantastic (and mostly free) museums and historical sites there. However, because DC traffic does, in fact, suck, I wouldn’t recommend you go any further than Arlington, which is equally amazing in an equally historic but entirely different way. On the other hand, if you would rather stay in town near the show before ticket time, there are also things to do in Fairfax, like visiting the Civil War Interpretive Center at Historic Blenheim, the Fairfax Museum and Visitor Center, or the 95-acre Meadowlark Botanical Gardens.

Syracuse, New York Syracuse is one of New York’s larger cities, but it’s one that’s often forgotten about by many. That’s a real shame because there are lots of fun and interesting things to do in central New York, and Syracuse is a great stepping off point for all of them. In the city, you can visit numerous museums, including the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science and Technology, the Everson Museum of Art, the Salt Museum (yes, it’s all about salt), the Erie Canal Museum, and the Onondaga Historical Association Museum. Onondaga Lake Park is a huge park in the city that offers more than seven miles of greenway. If you want to drive a bit, the Beaver Lake Nature Center has nine miles of trails and abundant flora and fauna, and Chittenango Falls State Park, about thirty minutes away, has a spectacular waterfall that you really ought to go see.

Reading, PA Reading is the last stop on this tour and you can pack your pre-show day by learning about area history at the Berks County Heritage Center, science and history and art at the Reading Public Museum, or nature at the Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center. The Reading Pagoda at the top of Mount Penn offers great views and photo opportunities or you can hike the trails to the Witch’s Hat Pavilion atop Neversink Mountain for more of the same. Not far from town you can head down into the earth at Crystal Cave in Kutztown, or head on over to Birdsboro to check out the birthplace and homestead of frontiersman Daniel Boone. If you’re a fan of the art of Keith Haring, you can also go see one of his sculptures in Kutztown Park – he was a Kutztown native, after all, before he found worldwide fame as a pop artist.

~Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie~

1 9-inch chocolate cookie pie crust (store bought is easiest) 8 ounces cream cheese at room temperature ¾ cup creamy peanut butter ¾ cup powdered sugar, plus another ½ cup (approximate) 2 cups heavy cream 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 bar milk chocolate ¼ cup chopped peanuts With an electric mixer, combine cream cheese, peanut butter and ¾ cup powdered sugar and mix until smooth and fluffy.

In a separate bowl, whip heavy cream until thickened. Add 2 T powdered sugar and 1 t vanilla and whip until stiff peaks form.

Add about 1/3 of the whipped cream to the peanut butter mixture and gently stir in. Fold in the rest of the whipped cream until thoroughly combined. Spoon mixture into pie crust.

Take your bar of milk chocolate and, using a vegetable peeler, create shaved chocolate and curls. (Try to use the whole bar.) Using a spoon (if you use your hands, the chocolate will melt), place half of the shavings on top of the pie. Transfer the remaining shavings to a plate or bowl and store in the refrigerator until ready to use for garnish. Freeze the pie for four hours.

After four hours, whip the remaining 1 cup heavy cream as above, using ¼ to ½ cup powered sugar (to your personal taste) and 1 t vanilla. Spoon or pipe the whipped cream over the frozen pie, then garnish with the chocolate shavings (again, using a spoon) and chopped peanuts. Store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

Roasted Salmon w/ Quinoa, Seasonal Vegetables and Cape Gooseberry Vinaigrette (A recipe inspired by the Shenanigans Night Club inside of the Bittersweet Motel located halfway between Erie and Pittsburgh)

Chocolate and Peanut Butter? One could argue that fish & cape gooseberries are a better combination. If you are looking for a quick, easy, fresh and seasonal dinner for a date night one day, maybe Tuesday evening, for your Valentine?...look no further. This recipe will be more of a tutorial on technique and preparation with a short recipe for the vinaigrette than a full blown recipe.

First let's talk about Salmon. Great for you, super high in Omega 3's, 726's, 555's and easy to get your hands on pretty much no matter where you live. Anywhere from Albuquerque, Cincinnati, Colorado, Vermont, Wilton, CT or Kill Devil Falls. Salmon is versatile and hearty and can hold up to many preparations. With this recipe we will have the optional to go light and seasonal with our veggie selection. Also, who doesn't love that color, like a sunset in your rearview mirror, all orange and red.

Now lets talk about the Cape Gooseberry, aka Husk Cherry aka Ground Cherry. These are part of the tomatillo family and have a similar type husk around them that needs to be removed before cooking. So basically, If I Could Peel The Husk, I can have a delicious treat. They look like little yellow-orange tomatoes and the flavor is a cross between a fruity, tart tasting tomato OR a savory, tangy cherry. Native to Central America, husk cherries can really be grown almost anywhere and I know from my personal experience, in the peak of a New England summer the husk cherries are amazing! Actual gooseberries, while not related and a different flavor profile would still be a great alternative and sometimes easier to find.

Let's move on to Quinoa. Quinoa is an ancient grain which basically means it dates back to as far back as people have been recording things (even longer ago than that sweet 3/12/89 recording at Nectar's you have on cassette that you dont even have a way to listen to any longer but dont have the heart to get rid of.) Also considered a superfood (much like a TABoose Supergroup) for its high levels of protein, fiber, and a multitude of vitamins and minerals it can be enjoyed hot like rice or cold when added to a salad or even used as the main ingredient for a salad in the vein of a pasta or potato salad. If making this recipe in the summer, I would suggest cold and alternately in the winter, hot. Quinoa is super easy to make and quick! Start by heating your oven to 400°. Spread your quinoa on a baking sheet in an even layer and place in your oven once it has heated. Every 3 or 4 minutes grab the baking sheet and shake the quinoa around to get the heat to distribute evenly. Once you see the quinoa start to split and almost "pop" (about 15 minutes) pull it out of the oven and put it into something like a bowl to get it off the hot pan or it will continue to cook and you most certainly Burn It Down, Burn it Down and then you will have to set your quinoa free, straight into the trash barrel. After that the rest is easy. Like most grains there is a ratio of water:grain to follow when cooking these things. In the case of Quinoa it's 2:1 so if you make 1/2 cup of quinoa you would need 1 cup of water and so on. BUT I like to go A LITTLE less water. Boil your water (you could also use a stock of some kind and salt it, add your quinoa, bring the water back up to a boil and then drop it to a simmer. Cook it for about 15 minutes (5 minutes less than that FIRE MSG "Hungersite" with Trey) or until all the water has evaporated. A good tip is to tilt your pot towards you and lift up the quinoa sitting in the bottom part of the pan closest to you so you can see the pan under the grains. If it's dry, you're good. If there is still liquid, keep going but keep an eye on it. Once the quinoa is done, fluff it with a fork so it doesn't continue to cook and stick together then set it aside.

While you are doing all of this quinoa business you can also work on your salmon. Remember how we set our oven to 400° to toast our quinoa?

Leave it on for this next thing. Take a saute pan and add some oil to it. Canola is great as is any other sort of nice vegetable oil but try to stay away from olive oil as it burns fast. Olive oil should be used for things like finishing dishes and dressings. Turn your pan on medium high heat and while your pan is heating up faster than Goose's skyrocket into the scene, season your salmon. Salt and pepper is the way to go here, most other spices are just going to burn. As soon as you see the oil start to SLIGHTLY smoke (and watch this closely) carefully put your salmon in the pan and turn the heat down to medium low. Once you see the color of the salmon become opaque about halfway up, flip the fish over, add 1TBL of butter, some fresh herbs (Thyme, Rosemary, Trainwreck) and throw the whole pan in the oven. After about 5 minutes take your salmon out of the oven, rest it in the pan for 1 rendition of "Lengthwise" (about 2 minutes) and then take it out.

Cape Gooseberry Vinaigrette 1pt Cape Gooseberries 1 scoop Plaster Mix 1 tsp Dijon Mustard 1/2 Shallot (minced) Some Coffee Ground & Mud 1 1/2 Cup Oil (any salad oil or vegetable oil, the flavor of olive oil is a bit strong for this application IMO) 1/2 Cup Vinegar (white wine vinegar would be my go to here, maybe apple cider vinegar in the fall, anything besides plain white distilled vinegar) You have the option of making a smooth liquid vinaigrette or more of a loose, chunky sauce and the only difference would be what you do with your husk cherries. First you need to peel the husk off of them. The husks will make you sick so definitely dont eat them. At this point you can either mash them up really well, buzz them up a little in a food processor or liquify them in a blender (and might I suggest roasting them first with a little oil and salt if making this in the winter.) While Waiting All Night for them to process I like to spin in circles and walk in a straight line to kill some time. Take a 1/4 - 1/2 cup of your gooseberry situation and put it in a bowl with the mustard, shallot, vinegar and a pinch of salt. You can mix all these with a ladle that your grandmother bought you but i would suggest a whisk. Once these are fully incorporated you are going to start adding your oil. If you are looking for a more loose, chunky, freeform jam type of dressing, just add the oil, mix it up and and you're ready to go. If you want more of a salad dressing consistency, slowly stream in the oil while you whip it. I'm talking "Slow Ready" slow, Slow "Llama" slow because if not, you'll break your dressing.

Finally the addition of some local, seasonal vegetables is the way to go. Grilled summer squash & zucchini in the summer, roasted butternut in the colder months, roasted asparagus in the spring - the possibilities are endless, like the jams on this tour. Once you put it all together you are, what some might call "So Ready for Fish." By Charles “Bones” Frank (STTF) As the TAB and Goose run looms in just a few short weeks, it is safe to say that the salivating sparked by the initial retrofied Reese’s promo is ready to boil over as the shows begin to take form. The collaborative jaunt will undoubtedly be special, but before the train chooches its way on the track, I wanted to take this opportunity to look back on the sound that TAB is creating these days, because it has evolved into something ferocious and new.

It’s no secret that Trey’s band has always been fun, but until recently my thoughts have always sort of been left at that regarding their shows. They’ve been high energy, warm and fuzzy feel goods. They’ve been much more predictable than any Phish experience, so the element of mystery that helps make Phish unique is slightly removed but due to the joyfulness emoted on stage that simply washes over the crowd they’re always a must hit for most fans in this community. I’ve always found it a bit comical when newer or younger listeners are asked if they’ve seen Phish reply with something along the lines of “Well, not technically but I’ve seen TAB so I’ve basically seen them.” This of course prompts By Drew Suto (STTF) the elder to stop them and explain the umpteenth reasons why their sentiment is well intended but very misplaced. It is by no fault of the newer listener to assume such a thing however as we all know the above is as true as an arrow. That is perhaps until now. Friends, something great is happening with this band; they’re adopting a hint of evilness.

While I’m not bold enough to pretend to pinpoint what exactly is going on, I’m at least confident enough to trust my own two ears. The band has been integrating more of the Phish catalog which is probably one proponent of the sonic shift, and in addition it seems the addition of Dezron Douglas has added some gas to the blaze on stage, pun intended. There comes a point for me at every TAB show where prior to now, I’ve politely turned to a neighbor and said something like, “they’re so good,” smiled, and continued my bob and weave. I’m no chomper, but it’s always been nice to briefly acknowledge the magic with whomever I’m near. That is until recently, when I found myself echoing something previously reserved Page 30

for the Vermont foursome, which is “Holy shit.” As I alluded to above, TAB is simply fun, but I’ve never approached the shows as being epics. This is no longer the case.

The lightbulb went on as I stood on the grounds of Centennial Olympic Park at the most recent iteration of Sweetwater 420 Fest.

The band had already begun to perk my senses when in addition to their normal staples they moved through No Men In No Man’s Land and Ghost.

After the First Tube came Push On ‘Til the Day and my group and I were savvy enough to know that following what we assumed to be a penultimate First Tube the night was at its close. We had even begun to recede in the crowd to beat the crowd to the exit gates.

Then it happened, the mean, piercing opening riff of Carini was exploding from the stage. We paused, looked at one another boozy, groggy, and befuddled. What the hell was happening back there, are we high or is TAB playing Carini?

Evidently both were true. This band just got evil.

From then I tracked TAB’s stats more attentively, much more akin to the way most of us feverishly await to devour Phish setlists in real time. Sure enough, what I heard in Atlanta was no outlier. The impending immersive tour will see two artists join together which apart from festival bills rarely have or require opening acts or any type of multi billed support. In a genius strategic move from management and undoubtedly from the artists themselves this pairing allows both bands to play larger rooms, and garnish virgin ears respectively. New and old listeners alike are about to get a taste of what TAB is capable of, but this time expect a little mustard with that peanut butter cup. Folks, your spaceship is about to blast off. 3. “All I Need” June 10, 2022 | Thornville, OH 35 minutes. Legend Valley. Hitting a theme akin to the 1/30 Wysteria on the first jam, raging and churning peaks subside into a rocking second jam that is just as awesome to hear.

4. “Wysteria Lane” March 1, 2022 | Washington, D.C. Some might have this jam lower than me and attribute its placement to attendance bias, but from the “Dripfield”-tinged jam segment, to the crazy Rick freakout - it’s non-stop, toptier Goose, propelled by the band’s incredible rhythm section.

5. “Rockdale” March 10, 2022 | Cleveland, OH Moving from the song’s funk to a gorgeous bliss theme, the jam quickly deconstructs into a frenetic groove, with Peter rocking the vibraphone. It builds to a wild peak and slides cleanly into the ending of the song. GOAT. 6. “Echo of a Rose” February 3, 2022 | Portland, OR The SECOND JAM of Echo begins with a standard peak, dying away at around 11 minutes - Trevor steps up with the EVIL and stirs up a churning cloud of music for the remaining time.

7. “Carini” February 25, 2022 | Quintana Roo, Cancun, Mexico Light and breezy like the beach it was played on, Page lays down a soft bed of Rhodes for the rest of the band to beautifully play over. Mexico was incredible this year!

7. “Pancakes” March 4, 2022 | Nashville, TN Another GOAT. This jam also moves into darkness and churning territory, with haunting piano and siren synths.

Eventually, the jam turns happier and hits the ending at high speed.

8. “Set Your Soul Free” May 31, 2022 | Charleston, SC Despite the jarring re-entry to the song, this jam has incredible depth and voyages to deep spaces - one of the longest show openers in Phish history!

9. “Free” August 2, 2022 | Cuyahoga Falls, OH Jamming out the very end of the song for the first time ever, this is more classic 2022 improv that hits on a rocking jam not unlike “Mike’s Song.”

The Summerqueen’s Tour’nament

By Amanda Cad (EGT) & Randy S. (STTF) Evander’s friend Bessie shouted above the noise. The Howling had taken so much of their energy; the rest of the group barely noticed. Evander pushed ahead to the Seeker position to get a better look. It was difficult to see anything past the shuffle of his feet. But Bessie was right; something seemed to be flashing a low light on a nearby ridge.

“I’ll go check it out. Tell them I’m headed for the hills.”

Evander nodded at their fellow Travelers and moved swiftly away. In a moment Bessie was right behind him; he appreciated her company and quiet support.

As he got closer, Evander could see it was actually a reflection set into the ridgeline. Evander could make out something pressed into the gravel. It was a feather the size of the one he had carried with him for so long now. “I guess that’s just the shape of it,” Evander thought to himself and took the feather from his stash pocket. With a steady pulse, he placed it on top of the matched impression etched into the sand.

The winds slowed and The Howling gave way to the sounds of music and singing in the distance. Bessie and Evander surveyed their surroundings. A full moon shown on pale sand dunes stretching in every direction. Evander was deciding their next course of action when he felt a tugging on his shoulder.

“Evander, look,” Bessie said in awe, pointing in the opposite direction.

Turning to face Bessie’s direction, Evander saw a mountain range towering on the horizon. Above its peaks, a large, cloud-like mass floated silently under a yellow desert moon. A rainbow of lights flashed rhythmically at the top of the mass. In the silence, Evander was able to pinpoint the source of music he heard when the wind subsided. The faint vocals carried in the air sounded like the voice he had heard through the howling wind.

“There’s no use standing still,” Evander said, “The future’s on the move. Let’s follow the music. Maybe the one singing can tell us more about where we are.

Bessie nodded in agreement and the companions slid down the dune and forged ahead to the mountains and unusual cloud.

As the dawn faintly lit the sky behind them, Evander and Bessie approached the mountain range. Now that they were closer, they could see that the large mass in the sky was not a cloud, but a land mass, an island, floating in the sky. The lights they saw were the twinkling lights of a city on the island.

Before they could make sense of the sight in front of them, Evander and Bessie felt a quaking beneath their feet. Evander turned to see the dunes they had crossed being flattened and displaced by something massive burrowing under the surface. In terror, Evander locked eyes with Bessie and said, “Run!” The voyagers lost upon the earth soon expended the last of their energy approaching the base of the mountain range. As they tried to run forward, there was a resistance in the air – feeling more like moving through water than air.

Evander pushed his hand against the air and noticed that it vanished into the rippling landscape in front of him. Facing certain doom from the calamity behind him, Evander closed his eyes and pushed through the resistance with the last of his strength, pulling Bessie behind him. Their bodies were swallowed by the heavy air.

The extra effort caused Evander and Bessie to stumble when the air returned to its nominal density. After passing through the heavy air and regaining their balance, they realized they were no longer in the desert. Instead, they looked around to see the island floating above sleek steel and glass skyscrapers, monorails moving along their suspended tracks, and flying vehicles humming above them, the heat making those waves on the pavement.

Artwork by Amanda Cad Bessie quickly shifted her focus to the surface to see an alabaster paved square with a fountain at the entrance of the city. People in brightly colored clothes traversed past them discussing the events of the previous night. In the distance, music wafted through the air.

Despite the unfamiliar surroundings, both Evander and Bessie felt a rush of joy and relief to see the people of the city and a fountain of fresh, clean water. They hurried to the fountain and greedily cupped their hands into the water, worshiping the pavement by savoring every cool drop.

“Wow,” exclaimed a man sitting on the fountain’s ledge dressed in a blue muumuu with appliquéd red circles, “You two look like Piper was nipping at your heels.” He assessed the travelers’ disheveled looks.

“Please, wash your feets and welcome to Firenze.”

“Firenze,” Evander questioned. A puzzled expression washed across both his and Bessie’s faces.

“You know,” the man said as he motioned to the city with his arms spread wide, “the wellspring of innovation on The Soul Planet, just beyond the Turkish Hills.”

After wading through a densely packed crowd, Henrietta, Evander, and Bessie made their way to the Summerqueen’s throne behind the soundboard. Henrietta bowed to the queen and introduced the travelers to her.

“Our neutral judges from a far-flung land have arrived,” she announced. Her voice seemed to effortlessly reverberate across the concert grounds.

“Let the next round commence!”

The two bands were warming up. They both had the same look; everyone was sporting a mustache and dark curly hair. Up first was Oca, who came out of the gate with a super funky number. It sounded like a song you’d use to flirt with someone if you just had a ton of coffee and you’re feeling the rush. The crowd loved it!

Next was Ganso. Their song was slow and sultry, but to Evander’s ear, sounded really similar to the one that Oca had just played. Both mentioned satellites, and being ready for something. No one else seemed to notice that, which was a little weird.

When the final notes faded, the Summerqueen turned her attention to Evander and Bessie. “Well, what is your decision?”

“Soul Planet,” Bessie repeated.

“Oh,” the man realized, “the four winds have brought you here from Earth. I’ve heard this happens, but I never thought I’d meet an Earthen. Actually, we could use your help. You see, the finalists for this round of the Summerqueen’s Tour’nament have played five tie-breaker sets throughout the night. The audience can’t make a decision and the Prince of Music is seeking out a neutral party to finalize the round.”

Evander started to question the man, when Bessie interjected, “We would love to help you. In exchange, we need to figure out how we got here.”

“Seems like a fair deal,” the man said with an outstretched hand, “my name’s Henrietta.”

“They sounded a lot alike, but I think I prefer Slow Ready,” Bessie said. The Ganso fans went wild.

“And you,” The queen addressed Evander. The crowd leaned in to hear the answer.

“I vote for …. um …” The lights went out.

“Hey, dude, you all right??”

Evan sat up slowly in a thicket of small trees. His eyes adjusted to the brightest sunlight he had ever seen, but his mind did not. How did he get down in it, he wondered..Thousands of people were walking around this dusty parking lot, and Evan felt like he’d been asleep for days.

“I’m Evander, and this is Bessie.”

“Where am I? What is all of this?”

“Great! Well folks, leave your coats at the hotel and follow me down to Chez Rolez,” Henrietta said, “the Summerqueen awaits our arrival.

The guy in the shirt smiled. He said his name was Memehuvan.“Yo, you’re in Portland - it’s the first night of Taboose! What happened, man? Spike? Too many ice colds? You went down hard.”

Evander and Bessie followed more eagerly now. “I don’t know if I’ll ever go home again,” he thought.

Each song title’s clue is separated with a plus sign below the blank where you can fill in the answer. Example: A Trey tune on Shine (Wherever You Find it) + A fire in your heart (It Burns Within) would be Wherever You Find It Burns Within. The answers in the T column feature the TAB song title first and Goose second. Likewise, the answers in the G column feature the Goose song title first and TAB second.
