anddecidingon-the-flywhathighlightstocapture-usingengagingcameraanglesanduniqueperspectivestoeffectivelydrawtheaudiencein.It’s extremelyimpressivewhentakingintocontextliveshows,whichareunpredictable,un-choreographedandfleeting,essentiallygiving videographersonechancetocatcheachmoment. Inthisvolume,asafollow-uptoourinterviewwithSamBardani,wewantedtotalktosomeoneontheothersideofproduction,
It’sevolvedquiteabitsincewebegantouringwithallthevideogear.WerecentlyupgradedallofourcamerastoPanasonicBGH1boxcameras.All arepoweredandcontrolledoverethernetandtransmitfeedoverSDI.Thisisahugeadvantageforus,consideringweusedtohavetoconvertallof ouroldcamerasfromHDMItoSDI.Mywirelessrighasalsoevolved.ItconsistsofthenewDJIRS2gimbal,aBGH1witha24-70zoomlensand zoomcontrol,aBlackmagicVideoassistmonitor,andaTeradekBoltwirelessvideotransmitterthatsendsmyfeedtotheswitcher.MartaandIalso recentlydesignedandbuiltavideoworldconsolewitheverycomponentrackmountedintoa45’x30’roadcasethatmakesoursetupmuchmore efficient.
Fromavideoproductionperspective,howdoesaspecialeventlikeGoosemasdifferfromaregularGooseshow?Istheretypicallyalotmore planninginvolved?
Goosemasisdefinitelydifferentfromaregularproduction.I’dsaymoreplanninggoesintothelightingaspectofgoosemasbutcapturingthevideo isjustasimportant.WhileIcantdiscusstoomanysecretsaboutthesetupthisyear,itisdefinitelyoneyouaren'tgoingtowanttomiss!

Inadditiontotheirliveshowsandproductionalwaysbeingon-point,theband’smerchandisehas alwaysstoodout-fresh,excitingandstylistic,embracingawide-varietyofstyles.Overthecourse ofthesevenyearsasaband,Goosehasworkedwithavarietyofartists,includingtheLevyArt Family,JamesFlames,Bolly’sBodega,DannySteinmanandmuchmore-generatingmoreinterest fromprintandpincollectorsacrossthejambandscene,asthebandcontinuestogrow.
Merchandisesalesatshows(especiallythosewithhighlydesirable,show-exclusivepostersor pins)wouldn’tworknearlywellwithoutextraordinaireslikeourlong-timeallyandfriend Naveed Quarterman, MerchandiseManagerofGoose.Alwaysgreetingfanswithasmileandtreating everyonewithexceptionalservice,Naveedhasleftahugeimpressiononmanyofus.Aswewrap upthisyear,wewantedtospeakwithourfriendabouthisexperiencesonGoosetour,andmore.

Believeitornot,GooseisthefirstandonlyrealbandI’veworkedmerchandisefor.Myveryfirstexperienceatamerchboothwason11/02/19in NewHaven,CTwhiletheywerestillopeningforPPPP[ed:PigeonsPlayingPingPong].IgottovolunteeragainattherescheduledHalloweenshows 11/6-11/7/20,butdidn’tactuallystartmyofficialpositionuntil5/3/21inFredrickMD.BeingabletoworkforGoosehasbeenrewardingbeyond mywildestdreams!IlovewhatIdoandwhoIdoitwith.NowthatIamsettlinginmore,IreallyfeellikebeingaMerchandiseManageriswhereI belonginthisindustry,andthat’sjustacoolthingtorealizeinitself.AlthoughGoosewillalwaysbemynumberonepriority,Ihavehadthe opportunitytoworkwithPrimusandahandfulofotherartistssinceofficiallystartingthisposition.It’sbeenawildridethusfarandIlookforwardto seeingwherethispathcontinuestotakeme.
Goosehasgrownexponentiallyoverthepastyearandahalf.Whathasthatbeenlikefromyourperspective? Itreallyhasbeenanamazing,butrelativelyshort,journeyformeinthegrandschemeofthisconglomerate.ButI’velearnedsomuchinthesepast 7monthsandIonlyhopetocontinuelearningeveryshow.Ifeelveryluckytohavelandedaseatatthisspecifictable,withthisincrediblefamily. Frommyperspective,withgrowthIseemoreamazinghumansjoiningthisamazingcommunity.Noneofthiswouldbepossiblewithoutthe

Falltourisaspecialtimeforanyband,andGooseisnodifferent.The18-datetourstretchingfromNYCtoDenverhadsomeoftheband’sbest improvisationtodateandcontinued2021’strendofnewsongarrangementsandfeels.
Thefirsttwoshowsofthetourat Terminal5 in NewYork onOctober8thand9thsawthedebutofPeter’snewHammondC3organ,further expandinghiskeyboardrig’ssound.Rightoffthebat,thebandwasonfire,deliveringastandoutLookOutClevelandin10/8’sfirstset,asongthat featuredthefirst“Arcadiajam”ofthefalltour–aspacereachedoftenthatisreminiscentofArcadia’sTypeIendingjam.Othernotablemomentsin theshowwereAllINeed,beginningthetrendofstrongsingle-jamversions,Rick’sincrediblesoloingonRosewood,thedebutofthenewIndian RiverarrangementandoriginalsongTheOldMan’sBoat,andthelong-awaitedlivedebutofVampireWeekend’s2021.10/9,featuringan unannouncedthirdset,wasadistinctlyhigh-energyaffairwithmoredebuts–Peter’sLifeontheShelf,theTedTapestrackDragonflycomingoutof anunfinishedHotTea,andareallycooljamontheJiveIintrotheme.ThisshowalsofeaturedTrevor’sfirstuseofhismicrophonein2021whenhe readpoetryovertheMadhuvanjam.
Aftertakingacoupleweeksoff,therestofthetourkickedoffat TheStateTheatre in Portland on10/28forthefirstnightoftheHalloweenrun.An incredibleDrivedominatedthesecondset,completewithPeterbouncingaroundthestageonhisnewwirelessguitarsetup.TheEmpressof Organosmadeitsfirstappearanceofthetourtoclosethissecondsetwithamassive20-minuteversion–thissongmakesastrongcaseforMVP ofthetour.GoosedidnotcometoplayaroundonthesecondnightofPortland,deliveringanotherblisteringfirstset,butthesecondsetreally standsoutwithoneofthelongestArcadiastodate,teasingtheetherealmodesthesongwouldreachlaterinthetour,andaDARKLeadtheWay jam.Fourshowsinandthebandwasshowingapenchantfordarknessthathadnotbeenseenpreviously.
10/30at ThePalladium in Worcester featuredthedebutofVasudoclassicRockdale,ateaseofPhish’sDavidBowieinthemidstofGhostbusters Rap(shoutouttoJebediah’spercussionsolo),andateaseofthenextnight’sHalloweenthemeintheencore.Acover-filledaffair,Goose’s Halloweenshowfollowedathemeof AustinPowers:TheSpyWhoShaggedMe andhadthebanddressupasdifferentcharacters.Highlights includethejammed-outcoverdebutsofMyGenerationandI’mABeliever,EarthlingorAlien’smovefromanantics-filledgroovetojamvehicle, SeekersontheRidge’sfirstsplitofthetwoparts,andthefirstfastAllINeedsince12/5/19.
Playing Atlanta forthefirsttimeat TheEastern,Gooseabsolutelyburnedthebuildingtothegroundovertwonights.SlowReadygotitssecond extended-jamtreatmentandisnow2/2onabsolutelybuttersegues(7/2’sintoDriveand11/6’sintoArcadia)andanother20-minuteEmpressjam wasdelivered.TherealhighlightoftheshowwastheimpeccableRosewoodHeartinthemiddleofsettwo.Thebanddevelopedafunkygroovefor thebackhalfofthejamhighlightedbyPeterlayingdownawarmbedofelectricpianoandSpuds’typicallystrongfour-on-the-floorgroove.The secondnightinAtlantasawthedebutofyetanothernewarrangementofJiveII–goingbacktotheoriginalversionwithoutthesped-upPetersolo butwiththeverywelcomeadditionofsomeclavwork.TheOldMan’sBoatrevealeditselfasatop-tierjamvehicleinthisshowaswell,withan incredibleVintageVibegroovejamstretchingtonearly20minutes.AtypicallystrongMadhuvanclosedtherunastheencorebeforeGoosemoved ontoNewOrleans.
Thefirstshowofafive-dayrunalongtheGulfcoastandintoTexas, Republic in NOLA,wasashowthatwouldhavebeenrightathomeinGoose’s 2019.Apartyshowwithtonsofenergyandalackofdeepimprov(outsideofsomemomentsinTheWayItIsandThisOldSea),thisTuesdaynight ragerwaspurefunfromfronttoback.Hittingthe HouseOfBlues in Houston next,thebandmadeupforlostimprovtimewithtwo20+minute versionsofTimetoFleeandWysteriaLane,thelatterhittingavibeakintomorechilled-outcousinoftheBingoTourversion.
Anothernewarrangementdebutedon11/11atthe ScootInn in Austin,the“fast”EchoofaRose.Thisshowalsohadyetanotherflamethrowerof a20-minuteMadhuvan,achunkyAllINeedwithasecondjamforthefirsttimesince7/23atFloydFest,andonlythefourthappearanceoflongformcompositionTheLabyrinth.Themomentumbegantopickupagainwith11/12,wherethebandopenedwithagorgeousandetherealDrive thatledintothefirstslowTumblesince6/16inPerry,anarrangementIhadbeenlongawaitingthereturnof.OneofthebestEmpressofOrganos todateclosedthefirstset,featuringanextendedintrojamwithsomeincrediblecall-and-responsefromRichandPeter,thelatterhittingeveryside ofhisrigbeforethelyrics.Amoreenergy-orientedsecondsetfollowedwithablisteringWhiteLightsthattestedeachmemberoftheband’sspeed. ThetourclosedwiththreeshowsinGoosestrongholdColorado.Aftermakingthejumpfromsmallclubsin2019toSculptureParkthis summer,thebanddecidedtohostanintimateat Aspen’s500-capacity BellyUp.Atinyroomwithablazingshow,thefirstsetcontainedthe bestButterRumplayedtodate,repletewithaTequilajamandglowingVintageVibeworkbeforereturningtoclosethesong.Thesecond setwashighlightedbythe28-minuteHotTeathatdescendedintoadarkjamwherethebandtouchedonarepeatingriff,sloweditright downandjammeditintothecloudsonthebackofSpuds’half-timebeat.Leavingthesongunfinished,thebandwouldgoontofinishthe SeekerssandwichstartedatthebeginningofsettwobeforeheadingofftoDenveronthebacksofastrongEmpressjam.

Aftertakingafewdaysoff,thebandblazedintothe TowerTheatre in OklahomaCity witha30-minuteTimetoFleeopener,abrightandairyjam thatseguedsmoothlyintothefirstCautionsince10/2/20withDaveGrippo.Anothermassivejamappearedintheset,thesecondstandoutA WesternSunoftheyear.Whilenotquitereachingtheheightsofthemonstrous6/15version,thisstaysintherealmofgorgeousandethereal beforerampinguparoundthe18-minutemarkandblastingintotheFleeendingperfectly.Yetanotherblazing20-minuteMadhuvandominatedthe secondsetalongwithSpiritoftheDarkHorse’sfantasticpairingwithDragonfly. Thenextnightat TheTruman in KansasCity,Goosebroughtforthanotherjam-heavyEarthlingorAlien,amoredrawn-outSOS(incredibleorgan workfromPeter),andanawesomeAllINeed>BobDon>AllINeedsandwich.BobDonfeaturedafirst-timeextendedjamtreatmentwithamellow sectionoverthechoruschordprogressionappearingafterthestandardconclusionwithPeteronkeysthatgraduallygrewinintensitybefore explodingintothefinalchorusofAllINeedtoclosetheset.Arcadiadelivered,asalways,anincrediblejam–thisunfinishedversion,like 12/13/19,findingaprettymajor-keyspacetosegueintoacover,thistimeCrosseyedandPainless.Ahauntinglybeautiful726camelater,witha
Twosold-outnightsatthe MissionBallroom in Denver toclosethetourwasabigstatementfortheband.Someoftheirbiggestshowstodate,they wentBIGfromthefirstmomenttothelast.AtypicallystrongAllINeedjamhighlighted11/21set1alongwithanexplosiveRockdalethatreached ajamnotunlikethe10/8LookOutCleveland.SettwohadanotherslowTumblethatdeparteditstypicallymellowjamforasped-upandraging peak.Astand-aloneJiveLeesandwichedinsideMagicCarpetRideclosedthepenultimateshowofthetour.
“NevermissaShmondayshow”,readsatweetfromGooseintheafternoonof11/22,merehoursbeforetheytorchedDenvertotheground. Openingwithamassive24-minuteArrow,thebanddeliveredanearlyfiller-freeshowpackedfullofincrediblejams.Mypersonalfavoritebeingthe Arcadia–thisversioneclipsingthe6/11Swanzeyjamforthebest-everspot.Driftingonagentlebedofpianointoagorgeousjamspace,allfive memberstooktheirtimetoletthemusicbreathe,findinganincredibleandemotionalprogressionthatsawTrevorsteppingupwithanimpeccable basslineasthejamreachedsoaringpeakaftersoaringpeak.Stickingthelandingperfectly,RichtoreintotheArcadiaendingjamwithferocity. Standingoutamidtheflowofthesecondset,ThisOldSeawenttoadistinctlyrockingvibeoutofitsjam,leadingtoabriefDrivesecondjamthat hadbeenmissingfromtheversionplayedearlierintheset.Fortheencore,GoosechoserarityFactoryFictionforitsthirdplayatamonumental showthisyear.RivalingtheBingoTourversion’sholdforbest-ever,thisragerwastheperfectcapstonetotheshow,run,andtour.
Goosein2021hasbeenanincredibledevelopment–fromthe5/3Arrowand5/4Creaturestothe11/19HotTeaand11/22Arcadia,theband hasgoneinabevyofnewjammingdirectionswhilestillmaintainingahighstandardofenergyandexcellenceineachshow.Ican’twaittoseehow theycontinuedevelopattheendofthisyearandmovinginto2022!

YouknowthatfeelingyougotasakidwhenyouwokeuponChristmasMorning?OrmaybeitwasHanukkahorfromanamazingmomentin Nature?Theseareafewcommon,sharedexperiencesthathelpdefineourlivesandIknowalotofusgetthesesamefeelingswhenwe’reseeing livemusic.ThesefeelingshaveonlybecomemoreprofoundwhilesharingthemwiththeonesIlovethemost-mybeautifulwife(whoI’vebeenon TourwithsincetheNineties)andnowourtwoamazingchildren.Ayearago,attheheightofthePandemicandinthemidstofsomuchuncertainty, mysoulwasyearningforsomesalvation.Winter2020hadforcedusallbackintoourseparated,dividedlittleboxes.Ineededlivemusicandthere wasnonetobefound…admittedly,itfeltlikethisGrinchofavirushadalmoststolenboththeHolidaysANDanyhopesoflivemusicfromus.Butit’s momentslikethesewherewecanmanifestblessingsintoourlives.
GooseannouncedtheywouldbeperformingontheroofatRockefellerCenterfortheirannual Goosemasshow,which,likeBingoTour,wouldbebeamedintothehomesofmusicfansaround theworld.Whilethiswouldbeawonderfulwayforthemtoconnectwiththeiraudience,in caseslikemine,itsimplywouldn’tbeenough.Ididsomeresearchaboutbuildingsinthearea andfoundasliverofhope.Therewasaskyscrapernearbythatsataboutablockawayfrom RockefellerCenterwithsweepingviewsofallofitsgrandeur.I’dnarroweditdowntotwo possiblerooftops,bothofwhichwereinviewfromtheSkyLobby.Theonlyproblemwasthat thelobbywasclosedafter6pm,andthepublicwasn’tallowedinside.Idecidedtherewasonly onethingtodo-toasktheBuildingManagernicelyandusethemannersmyparentshad taughtme-Isentthisemail:

Wearrivedtothetowerwiththemostimportantthing-eachother.Whenwerolleduptothe SkyLobby,theviewwasglorious.WecouldseethebandsetupontheroofatRockefeller Center,couldhearthemusicthroughtheglassandhadallthedancespaceintheworld.A dreamcametruethatdayandmykidssawfirsthandhowifyoubelieveinsomething,youcan livethedream.WedancedaroundtheLobby,enjoyingtheshowblastingthroughaboombox webrought,enjoyedeachothers’companyandtookinthebeautyofNewYorkCityat Christmastimefromthemostimprobableperch.Thefirstsetwasmagicalbutthesecondset gotevenbetter-theBuildingManagercameinonhisnightoffandescortedustoaprivate elevatorthatledtoourownFLOOR.Theywouldbefilmingamovieonthatfloorthefollowing week,soitwasclearedoutforus.Wehadcushion-ycarpetingtodancebarefootonandwe wereafull10floorsclosertotheshow-heevenbroughtusabottleofdeliciousMalbec.My daughterjokedwithme“anybodyelsegettin’anyHotTeaVibes?!?”duringthe2ndSet.Sure enough,theGooseanthemcame...
