Goedde Sound & Light

Here at The el Goose Times, as we reflect upon Goose’s stellar year thus far - three successful tours, their first-ever festival and a movie (to be released later this month) - one characteristic that continues to leave a huge impression on fans, new and old alike, is the world-class quality of their livestreams/videos and soundboards. This is largely in thanks to the wizards at Goedde Sound & Light, which have been involved with Goose’s live productions since February 2018.

From my own studies and experience in cinematography, I’ve always admired and appreciated how videographers can maneuver across the stage and deciding on-the-fly what highlights to capture - using engaging camera angles and unique perspectives to effectively draw the audience in. It’s extremely impressive when taking into context live shows, which are unpredictable, un-choreographed and fleeting, essentially giving videographers one chance to catch each moment.

In this volume, as a follow-up to our interview with Sam Bardani, we wanted to talk to someone on the other side of production, Danny McDonald - a key member within the Goedde Sound & Light video production crew.

Tell us about your background in videography and experience working with Goedde Sound & Light. (shout out to Andrew, Marta and the Goedde family!) Have you always had a passion for video production?

My Background in videography started back in high school when I got into shooting and editing video for shows, festivals, camping trips, etc.

When I started working with GSL [ed: Goedde Sound & Light] back in 2017, we got more into multi-cam productions and bought our first gimbal - which saw many years of use and practice before retiring shortly after Bingo Tour.

Before any given show, has anyone in the band asked you to try and get specific shots? Are you given freedom to experiment with new techniques and camera angles/perspectives? It takes a really good eye to know what shots to get at the right moments, completely on the fly – we give you major props!

I am given a lot of freedom in terms of angles/perspectives which is a lot of fun for me. Specific shots usually come during soundcheck when I have some time to set my rig up and see the stage space and layout, but Peter will ask me to try new key shots recently as his setup has evolved. I also have our director and stage manager, Jon “Coach” Lombardi talking to me through a comm system that goes directly to my in-ear mix.

How has the video production equipment evolved over time, as the band continues to grow?

It’s evolved quite a bit since we began touring with all the video gear. We recently upgraded all of our cameras to Panasonic BGH1 box cameras. All are powered and controlled over ethernet and transmit feed over SDI. This is a huge advantage for us, considering we used to have to convert all of our old cameras from HDMI to SDI. My wireless rig has also evolved. It consists of the new DJI RS2 gimbal, a BGH1 with a 24-70 zoom lens and zoom control, a Blackmagic Video assist monitor, and a Teradek Bolt wireless video transmitter that sends my feed to the switcher. Marta and I also recently designed and built a videoworld console with every component rack mounted into a 45’x30’ road case that makes our setup much more efficient.

From a video production perspective, how does a special event like Goosemas differ from a regular Goose show? Is there typically a lot more planning involved?

Goosemas is definitely different from a regular production. I’d say more planning goes into the lighting aspect of goosemas but capturing the video is just as important. While I cant discuss too many secrets about the setup this year, it is definitely one you aren't going to want to miss!

Again, one of the first things that a lot of new Goose fans notice is the production being absolutely top notch and above the quality of their peers. It’s a testament to the hard work and passion that you and the team at Goedde Sound & Light bring to every Goose show. Thank you for your time and Happy Goosemas!

Naveed Quarterman Merchandise Manager Goose

In addition to their live shows and production always being on-point, the band’s merchandise has always stood out - fresh, exciting and stylistic, embracing a wide-variety of styles. Over the course of the seven years as a band, Goose has worked with a variety of artists, including the Levy Art Family, James Flames, Bolly’s Bodega, Danny Steinman and much more - generating more interest from print and pin collectors across the jam band scene, as the band continues to grow.

Merchandise sales at shows (especially those with highly desirable, show-exclusive posters or pins) wouldn’t work nearly well without extraordinaires like our long-time ally and friend Naveed Quarterman, Merchandise Manager of Goose. Always greeting fans with a smile and treating everyone with exceptional service, Naveed has left a huge impression on many of us. As we wrap up this year, we wanted to speak with our friend about his experiences on Goose tour, and more.

Thanks for taking the time to speak with The el Goose Times, Naveed – This was your first full year of Goose tour, correct? Tell us about your experience and what working merchandise for Goose has been like, compared to other artists you’ve worked for.

Believe it or not, Goose is the first and only real band I’ve worked merchandise for. My very first experience at a merch booth was on 11/02/19 in New Haven, CT while they were still opening for PPPP [ed: Pigeons Playing Ping Pong]. I got to volunteer again at the rescheduled Halloween shows 11/6-11/7/20, but didn’t actually start my official position until 5/3/21 in Fredrick MD. Being able to work for Goose has been rewarding beyond my wildest dreams! I love what I do and who I do it with. Now that I am settling in more, I really feel like being a Merchandise Manager is where I belong in this industry, and that’s just a cool thing to realize in itself. Although Goose will always be my number one priority, I have had the opportunity to work with Primus and a handful of other artists since officially starting this position. It’s been a wild ride thus far and I look forward to seeing where this path continues to take me.

Goose has grown exponentially over the past year and a half. What has that been like from your perspective?

It really has been an amazing, but relatively short, journey for me in the grand scheme of this conglomerate. But I’ve learned so much in these past 7 months and I only hope to continue learning every show. I feel very lucky to have landed a seat at this specific table, with this incredible family.

From my perspective, with growth I see more amazing humans joining this amazing community. None of this would be possible without the dedicated people that travel all around the country for this music and I try not to forget that.

What have been some of your favorite memories and experiences from this year with the band thus far? We loved how you were part of the ‘Get Involved Games’ at the Fred Festival (shout-out to Team Larry)! How has your relationship grown with the band and their management?

So many amazing memories I’ll cherish for the rest of time! Fred was such an awesome weekend.. there was definitely something special in that VA air. Thinking through Summer Tour, N2 at The Caverns in TN was just a spectacular, wet and magical evening. Also midnight Putt Putt with the gang at the Silver Lake Drive (Post show in Perry NY) was just some good ole’ fashion fun. Fall Tour was just a southern whirlwind altogether! We really are one big family and it’s super special to be a part of this continuous journey of growth on all fronts.

Walk us through, leading up to each show, the process running the merchandise booth and what it’s like. It seems like it can get crazy hectic when the doors open, especially during show-exclusive poster drops, but you’ve handled it beautifully. Have processes evolved? Is the band themselves typically engaged with what’s going on? (chuckles) Oh yes, a process indeed! There are a lot of moving parts to this beast, to say the least. I would need a whole other page to go through the entire process of setting up my booth!! But I hope to always make it seem smooth on the surface when the doors open to these venues, day of show. My goal is to always better the experience for each person that wants to take a tangible memory home from the show. Band Merchandise as a whole doesn’t need a lot of attention. But from what I’ve now observed, having someone completely dedicated to it yields better results for artists and guests across the board. Peter has his hands in the merchandise pot more than anyone else in the band, but at the end of the day, I am in place so the band doesn’t have to worry about anything merchandise related on tour - unless they choose to get involved. But for now…GOOSEMAS IS UPON US AND IT’S THE MOST HONKABLE TIME OF THE YEAR!!

Fall 2021 Recap Ryan Storm Storm Ryan Fall tour is a special time for any band, and Goose is no different. The 18-date tour stretching from NYC to Denver had some of the band’s best improvisation to date and continued 2021’s trend of new song arrangements and feels.

The first two shows of the tour at Terminal 5 in New York on October 8th and 9th saw the debut of Peter’s new Hammond C3 organ, further expanding his keyboard rig’s sound. Right off the bat, the band was on fire, delivering a standout Look Out Cleveland in 10/8’s first set, a song that featured the first “Arcadia jam” of the fall tour – a space reached often that is reminiscent of Arcadia’s Type I ending jam. Other notable moments in the show were All I Need, beginning the trend of strong single-jam versions, Rick’s incredible soloing on Rosewood, the debut of the new Indian River arrangement and original song The Old Man’s Boat, and the long-awaited live debut of Vampire Weekend’s 2021. 10/9, featuring an unannounced third set, was a distinctly high-energy affair with more debuts – Peter’s Life on the Shelf, the Ted Tapes track Dragonfly coming out of an unfinished Hot Tea, and a really cool jam on the Jive I intro theme. This show also featured Trevor’s first use of his microphone in 2021 when he read poetry over the Madhuvan jam.

After taking a couple weeks off, the rest of the tour kicked off at The State Theatre in Portland on 10/28 for the first night of the Halloween run. An incredible Drive dominated the second set, complete with Peter bouncing around the stage on his new wireless guitar setup. The Empress of Organos made its first appearance of the tour to close this second set with a massive 20-minute version – this song makes a strong case for MVP of the tour. Goose did not come to play around on the second night of Portland, delivering another blistering first set, but the second set really stands out with one of the longest Arcadias to date, teasing the ethereal modes the song would reach later in the tour, and a DARK Lead the Way jam. Four shows in and the band was showing a penchant for darkness that had not been seen previously.

10/30 at The Palladium in Worcester featured the debut of Vasudo classic Rockdale, a tease of Phish’s David Bowie in the midst of Ghostbusters Rap (shoutout to Jebediah’s percussion solo), and a tease of the next night’s Halloween theme in the encore. A cover-filled affair, Goose’s Halloween show followed a theme of Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and had the band dress up as different characters. Highlights include the jammed-out cover debuts of My Generation and I’m A Believer, Earthling or Alien’s move from an antics-filled groove to jam vehicle, Seekers on the Ridge’s first split of the two parts, and the first fast All I Need since 12/5/19.

Playing Atlanta for the first time at The Eastern, Goose absolutely burned the building to the ground over two nights. Slow Ready got its second extended-jam treatment and is now 2/2 on absolutely butter segues (7/2’s into Drive and 11/6’s into Arcadia) and another 20-minute Empress jam was delivered. The real highlight of the show was the impeccable Rosewood Heart in the middle of set two. The band developed a funky groove for the back half of the jam highlighted by Peter laying down a warm bed of electric piano and Spuds’ typically strong four-on-the-floor groove. The second night in Atlanta saw the debut of yet another new arrangement of Jive II – going back to the original version without the sped-up Peter solo but with the very welcome addition of some clav work. The Old Man’s Boat revealed itself as a top-tier jam vehicle in this show as well, with an incredible Vintage Vibe groove jam stretching to nearly 20 minutes. A typically strong Madhuvan closed the run as the encore before Goose moved on to New Orleans.

The first show of a five-day run along the Gulf coast and into Texas, Republic in NOLA, was a show that would have been right at home in Goose’s 2019. A party show with tons of energy and a lack of deep improv (outside of some moments in The Way It Is and This Old Sea), this Tuesday night rager was pure fun from front to back. Hitting the House Of Blues in Houston next, the band made up for lost improv time with two 20+ minute versions of Time to Flee and Wysteria Lane, the latter hitting a vibe akin to more chilled-out cousin of the Bingo Tour version.

Another new arrangement debuted on 11/11 at the Scoot Inn in Austin, the “fast” Echo of a Rose. This show also had yet another flamethrower of a 20-minute Madhuvan, a chunky All I Need with a second jam for the first time since 7/23 at FloydFest, and only the fourth appearance of longform composition The Labyrinth. The momentum began to pick up again with 11/12, where the band opened with a gorgeous and ethereal Drive that led into the first slow Tumble since 6/16 in Perry, an arrangement I had been long awaiting the return of. One of the best Empress of Organos to date closed the first set, featuring an extended intro jam with some incredible call-and-response from Rich and Peter, the latter hitting every side of his rig before the lyrics. A more energy-oriented second set followed with a blistering White Lights that tested each member of the band’s speed.

It's at this moment that I’d like to give Jeff a shoutout – his percussion work this tour really stood out and you can really hear how hard he’s been working at developing his skills. His singing on a few choice covers like My Generation and American Woman fits the tunes really well too!

11/13 in Dallas (at the Hifi) opened with the long-awaited bustout of The Who’s Eminence Front and was the second-ever performance of the full Jive suite (or Slick Rick’s Jive Triptych, however you want to call it) and the first to read Jive I > Jive II > Jive Lee. After taking a few days off, the band blazed into the Tower Theatre in Oklahoma City with a 30-minute Time to Flee opener, a bright and airy jam that segued smoothly into the first Caution since 10/2/20 with Dave Grippo. Another massive jam appeared in the set, the second standout A Western Sun of the year. While not quite reaching the heights of the monstrous 6/15 version, this stays in the realm of gorgeous and ethereal before ramping up around the 18-minute mark and blasting into the Flee ending perfectly. Yet another blazing 20-minute Madhuvan dominated the second set along with Spirit of the Dark Horse’s fantastic pairing with Dragonfly.

The next night at The Truman in Kansas City, Goose brought forth another jam-heavy Earthling or Alien, a more drawn-out SOS (incredible organ work from Peter), and an awesome All I Need > Bob Don > All I Need sandwich. Bob Don featured a first-time extended jam treatment with a mellow section over the chorus chord progression appearing after the standard conclusion with Peter on keys that gradually grew in intensity before exploding into the final chorus of All I Need to close the set. Arcadia delivered, as always, an incredible jam – this unfinished version, like 12/13/19, finding a pretty major-key space to segue into a cover, this time Crosseyed and Painless. A hauntingly beautiful 726 came later, with a great variation on the synth intro that continues to evolve with each play.

The tour closed with three shows in Goose stronghold Colorado. After making the jump from small clubs in 2019 to Sculpture Park this summer, the band decided to host an intimate at Aspen’s 500-capacity Belly Up. A tiny room with a blazing show, the first set contained the best Butter Rum played to date, replete with a Tequila jam and glowing Vintage Vibe work before returning to close the song. The second set was highlighted by the 28-minute Hot Tea that descended into a dark jam where the band touched on a repeating riff, slowed it right down and jammed it into the clouds on the back of Spuds’ half-time beat. Leaving the song unfinished, the band would go on to finish the Seekers sandwich started at the beginning of set two before heading off to Denver on the backs of a strong Empress jam.

Two sold-out nights at the Mission Ballroom in Denver to close the tour was a big statement for the band. Some of their biggest shows to date, they went BIG from the first moment to the last. A typically strong All I Need jam highlighted 11/21 set 1 along with an explosive Rockdale that reached a jam not unlike the 10/8 Look Out Cleveland. Set two had another slow Tumble that departed its typically mellow jam for a sped-up and raging peak. A stand-alone Jive Lee sandwiched inside Magic Carpet Ride closed the penultimate show of the tour.

“Never miss a Shmonday show”, reads a tweet from Goose in the afternoon of 11/22, mere hours before they torched Denver to the ground.

Opening with a massive 24-minute Arrow, the band delivered a nearly filler-free show packed full of incredible jams. My personal favorite being the Arcadia – this version eclipsing the 6/11 Swanzey jam for the best-ever spot. Drifting on a gentle bed of piano into a gorgeous jam space, all five members took their time to let the music breathe, finding an incredible and emotional progression that saw Trevor stepping up with an impeccable bass line as the jam reached soaring peak after soaring peak. Sticking the landing perfectly, Rich tore into the Arcadia ending jam with ferocity.

Standing out amid the flow of the second set, This Old Sea went to a distinctly rocking vibe out of its jam, leading to a brief Drive second jam that had been missing from the version played earlier in the set. For the encore, Goose chose rarity Factory Fiction for its third play at a monumental show this year. Rivaling the Bingo Tour version’s hold for best-ever, this rager was the perfect capstone to the show, run, and tour.

Goose in 2021 has been an incredible development – from the 5/3 Arrow and 5/4 Creatures to the 11/19 Hot Tea and 11/22 Arcadia, the band has gone in a bevy of new jamming directions while still maintaining a high standard of energy and excellence in each show. I can’t wait to see how they continue develop at the end of this year and moving into 2022!

Goose Fan Family Highlight: The Nashes “A Goosemas Miracle”

By Jerry Nash Jr. You know that feeling you got as a kid when you woke up on Christmas Morning? Or maybe it was Hanukkah or from an amazing moment in Nature? These are a few common, shared experiences that help define our lives and I know a lot of us get these same feelings when we’re seeing live music. These feelings have only become more profound while sharing them with the ones I love the most - my beautiful wife (who I’ve been on Tour with since the Nineties) and now our two amazing children. A year ago, at the height of the Pandemic and in the midst of so much uncertainty, my soul was yearning for some salvation. Winter 2020 had forced us all back into our separated, divided little boxes. I needed live music and there was none to be found…admittedly, it felt like this Grinch of a virus had almost stolen both the Holidays AND any hopes of live music from us. But it’s moments like these where we can manifest blessings into our lives.

Goose announced they would be performing on the roof at Rockefeller Center for their annual Goosemas show, which, like Bingo Tour, would be beamed into the homes of music fans around the world. While this would be a wonderful way for them to connect with their audience, in cases like mine, it simply wouldn’t be enough. I did some research about buildings in the area and found a sliver of hope. There was a skyscraper nearby that sat about a block away from Rockefeller Center with sweeping views of all of its grandeur. I’d narrowed it down to two possible rooftops, both of which were in view from the Sky Lobby. The only problem was that the lobby was closed after 6pm, and the public wasn’t allowed inside. I decided there was only one thing to do- to ask the Building Manager nicely and use the manners my parents had taught me - I sent this email:

Tomorrow evening, a band is playing a show on the Rooftop Gardens at Rockefeller Center.

My family and I were interested in seeing that show safely, from a distance. We're a musiccentric family and this pandemic has wreaked havoc on our souls. The show is broadcast on an app called Twitch, but it's just not the same being home in Connecticut. My wife is a Librarian and I'm a Teacher and we're just trying to get through the end of this year. Is the Sky Lobby somewhere we might be able to see some of the concert from? Is there public access to the Lobby after 6pm? The show starts at 7, and following the advice of an old Professor, there are no stupid questions- could we come watch the show from the Sky Lobby? Jerry, Jennifer, Amelia (10) and Trey (7) The Nashes We arrived to the tower with the most important thing - each other. When we rolled up to the Sky Lobby, the view was glorious. We could see the band setup on the roof at Rockefeller Center, could hear the music through the glass and had all the dance space in the world. A dream came true that day and my kids saw firsthand how if you believe in something, you can live the dream. We danced around the Lobby, enjoying the show blasting through a boombox we brought, enjoyed each others’ company and took in the beauty of New York City at Christmas time from the most improbable perch. The first set was magical but the second set got even better- the Building Manager came in on his night off and escorted us to a private elevator that led to our own FLOOR. They would be filming a movie on that floor the following week, so it was cleared out for us. We had cushion-y carpeting to dance barefoot on and we were a full 10 floors closer to the show - he even brought us a bottle of delicious Malbec. My daughter joked with me “anybody else gettin’ any Hot Tea Vibes?!?” during the 2nd Set. Sure enough, the Goose anthem came...

We’d done it. We’d made it to Goosemas 2020 during a Pandemic where there was an audience of four dancing across from Rockefeller Center. Skyscraper is Grand.

It was a bonafide Goosemas Miracle! My first show was Goosemas 2019 at the Wall Street Theater in Norwalk and here we are again at Goosemas 2021 - God bless us, every one!

White Lights

Hot cocoa. Snow. Sledding. Ear muffs. Warm cookies. These are just some of the words that are associated with the winter season.

However, if you’re a Goose fan, your mind goes to one song: “White Lights.” A song that has been played in the snow (more on that later), “White Lights” is the equivalent of sitting by the fireplace after playing in the snow all morning.

Written by everyone’s favorite mustachioed multi-instrumentalist, Peter Anspach, the song made its debut on December 22, 2018 at Cantiki in Norwalk for Goosemas V, according to elgoose.net. This places it among the first batch of tunes penned by Peter that are considered Goose originals versus songs penned by him while in Great Blue such as “Doc Brown” or “Yeti.”

Since its introduction three years ago, the song has remained a staple in the Goose discography and is regularly in rotation, having last been played at the band’s now-iconic stint at the Mission Ballroom in Denver. Despite the song’s popularity, “White Lights” has yet to be recorded on any of Goose’s studio albums, joining the ranks of songs like “Creatures” and “This Old Sea.” In terms of song structure, it is centered around a pretty standard melodic beginning that plays between two chords (A Major, D Sus2) that eventually rides out on that A Major interplay before unfolding into a jam that takes on its own character.

I’d be remiss to not mention Peter’s lyrics, which are just as mushy as biting into a soft cookie that just came out of the oven. The lyrics tell of passing romance in his Spanish class that doesn’t quite work out the way that he plans it out in his mind.

“Is it simple/ When I hit up your phone?/Do you ever think about how/I’m still sleeping alone?/Do you know me?/I sat behind you in Spanish,” Peter begins the tune, letting the listener know that they are in store for a tale of lost love.

Whether this is a tale of a past relationship gone awry or simply a missed connection is up for debate. However, Peter keeps up with the beautiful visuals for this unrequited love, even exclaiming that he can “see the future” and “see the stars.” The images in the lyrics are only accentuated more when you envision a December snowfall to lines like “White Lights/I saw you in a dream last night/You were floating to the outside/And I pulled you back in.”

By the end of the lyrics, the listener feels as though they just woke up from a dream though just as the lyrics end, the jam begins, which to many is the best part of the song. Different each time, the jam out of “White Lights” can range from something ethereal to a dance party, which is evident in the recommended versions below. In a way, you can say that the jam is like a Christmas present under a tree — never knowing what you’re going to get until you open it up.

Now for your favorite part. Here are five recommended versions that truly highlight the essence of “White Lights.”

12/21/19 Though this is a pretty standard version, this version stands out for anyone who was in attendance. During the performance of the song, fake snow started falling over the band and members of the crowd, doubling down on the winter elements of this tune. The look on Ben’s face as the “snow” began to accumulate on his cymbals is a moment that you wish you could bottle up and keep with you whenever you’re feeling down.

3/27/20 The sessions at T’s House at the beginning of the pandemic produced some of the most intimate moments from a band that was on the cusp of truly blowing up on the jam band scene. This version must be listened to with its segue into The Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows,” which borders on the line of being a spiritual experience.

9/16/20 This version absolutely rips from Goose’s first run at South Farms. Rick is in full control during this one. He gives off the vibe that this will become somewhat of a hose jam but eventually, he leads the band through a flashy and gaudy guitar extravaganza that is just as extra as an aluminum Christmas tree from the 1960s. Also, if you peep the official release of this version on YouTube, you will see The el Goose Times’ resident dance teacher Marc Komito absolutely lighting up “the rail.”

10/15/20 There must be something with Legend Valley and “White Lights” as this is the first of two times that this song appears on this list from a show at Legend Valley in Ohio. This version starts fairly traditional, following the same pattern as most other versions of “White Lights.”

However, around the 9 minute mark, this version turns into a dance party with Peter killing it on the keys and laying down a rhythm that sends this jam into Type II territory.

6/18/21 Up for a challenge? Listen to this version and try to find all of the teases to other songs hidden within this tune. I guarantee you that you will find something new each time you listen. Outside of the teases galore, this version is unapologetic with each member getting their time to shine, which ultimately leads to a peak that, dare I say, makes this the current best version of “White Lights.”

Atkind Family Recipe: Potato Latkes

Ingredients: 5 lbs potatoes, peeled 2 large onions 6 large eggs 2 tsp salt ½ cup Matzo Meal (or 6 tablespoons flour) Black Pepper Vegetable oil for frying

Directions: 1. Using grater or food processor, grate potatoes and eggs, using light pressure to make lacier latkes. Pour into bowl.

2. Add eggs, salt, pepper and flour or matzo meal.

Mix well.

3. Heat ¼ tablespoon of vegetable oil in large frying pan.

4. Use large spoonful of batter, flatten slightly, for each latke don’t crowd the pan.

5. Turn to fry until well-browned on both sides.

6. Drain on double layer of paper towels.

7. Serve immediately or let cool and freeze in large freezer bags.

To reheat frozen latkes, preheat oven to 350 degrees, place frozen latkes on baking sheets directly into hot oven for approximately 10 minutes.

8. Serve with applesauce and/or sour cream.

June says that “this recipe makes about 50 latkes - I usually double the recipe, using 10 lbs of potatoes.”
