WhentheGooseflockwokeuponthemorningofJuly23rd,theywere deliveredanearlyGoosemasgiftthatbothexcitedandshockedthe group’slegionoffans.Thatsurprisecameintheformof“Blood,”a brandnewsinglefromVasudo–theproto-Goosebandthathadnot playedapublicgigsincetheSummerof2013.

WhiletheirappearanceontheFREDFestivallineupsparkedwhimsyin newfans,manyvetsgotexcitedattheprospectofhearingoriginalcuts offavoriteslike“EchoofaRose”and“Flodown.”However,manydidnot expectthequintetof MattCampbell,RickMitarotonda,TrevorWeeks, JeffArevaloandnewmember,PeterAnspach,toannouncetherelease oftheirdebutalbum.“CallItLouis,”anewsix-songLP,willbereleased onAugust6thdigitallywithavinylreleaseinNovember. Ifyou’rereading thisandstillwonderingwhoVasudois,letuscatchyouuptospeed.

Vasudo formedin2012whenMattandRickstartedtoperformcovers togetheratViaZapatainWestport,Conn.Soonenough,thetwoenlisted thehelpofTrevorandJefftostartperformingtheirownmusic.Manyof thosetuneshavesincebecomestaplesintheGooseliverepertoire including“ButterRum,”“HotTea,”“TheEmpressofOrganos”andthe highly-soughtafter“FactoryFiction.”

In2013,thebandreleaseditsfirstEP,“TheFrenchTapes,”whichwaslimitedtoonly50copiesanddistributedattheir showatFairfieldTheatreCompanyinFairfield,Conn.ThetapeincludesVasudocutslike“PachaMama”and“HotLove& TheLazyPoet.” Ifyouthoughtgettingyourhandsonadeluxecopyof“AliveandWell”washard,tryscoringacopyof“The FrenchTapes!”

AftertheirlastperformanceinJulyof2013,thebandmemberswouldallgotheirseparatewayswithRickandTrevor goingofftostartGoose.WhenGooseformedin2014,thehistoryofthetwobecameinstantlyintertwinedasGoose carriedonthelegacyofthetunesthatRichandMattwrotetogether.

Fastforwardtotoday,thegrouphaslaiddormant.However,theirFREDfestperformanceonFridaywillbethefirsttimein overeightyearsthattheoriginalmembersofVasudowillsharethestagetogether.Thistime,theywillalsobeadding PetertomixinasimilarfashiontowhenhejoinedGoosebackin2017.Whiletherearecurrentlymanyunknowns surroundingtheirperformanceonFRED,onethingisforcertain,songwriter,guitaristandvocalist MattCampbell is moreexcitedthanevertosharethestagewithhisformerbandmates. Mattsatdownforanexclusiveinterviewwith TheelGooseTimes todiscusshowVasudocamebacktogetherafter almostadecadeapart,howmanyGoosestapleswerewrittenbetweenhimandRickandwhatexactlyfanscan expectwhenthebandhitsthestageonFridayafternoonatFRED.

Firstofall,thankyoufortakingsometimetospeakwithTheelGooseTimes,wereallyappreciateit! TellusabouttheformationofVasudo.HowdidyoumeetRickandTrevor?

ImetRickatamutualfriend’shousewhenIwasincollege-Rickwasstillinhighschool.Weranintoeachother again(withinstrumentspresent)wasatTrevor’shouseforaFourthofJulyparty.(Atthetime)Ihadshownupwith somefriends,(asIhadheard)therewasajamgoingonatTrevor’s.Therewerealotofguitarplayers,andTrevor washoldingitdownonthelowend.

Betweenjams,Ricksawmeandaskedwheremykeyboardwas-ithappenedtobedownthestreetatmyparents’ house.Wepickedupmykeyboardandhungoutforanhourtalkingaboutlifeandmusic,FranzSchubert, specifically. “WetalkedaboutSchubertfor20minutessittingonastonewalllookingintothewoods.” Webrought mykeyboardbacktoTrevor’shouseandjammedfortherestofthenightwiththisgroup.Thatwasthefirsttime Trevor,RickandIplayedtogether.

RickandIstartedplayingduringthesummerwhenIwashomefromcollege-RickhadgonetoBerkleeatthat point.Eventually,weputabandtogethercalledthePinkFlamingos.Thebandincludedsomefriendsfromhome. Weplayedsomebackyardparties,webarelyknewanysongs.Eventually,Rickbroughtadrummerandpercussion playerfromBerklee(DaveandLex),theycamedownduringthesummerandwe’dplayinRick’sbasement.Ourfist gigoutsideofabasementwasatTheLumberyard-mostlycovers,afeworiginalsprimarilywrittenbyRick.Thefirst VasudosongthatcameoutduringthosedayswasHotLove&theLazyPoet.

TellusaboutthesongwritingprocessinVasudo.Inaspanofundertwoyears,youcollaborativelywrote somanysongsthatarenowlivestaples.Whenwritingsongs,wereyouprimarilyinchargeof songwritingdutiesorwasitacollaborativeeffort?

TherearesomesongsVasudoplayedthatRickwrote,therearesomethatIwrote-bothofushaveasimilardrive whenitcomestosongwriting.ManyofthesongsIstartedinSouthAmericaandbeyondwouldderivefromanidea thatIwouldbringbackandcraftwithRick(andviceversa).EvenifIwrotealotofthelyricsorthebasisforsomeof thesongs,theydon’texistwithoutRick.

Thefirstsongwetrulysatinaroomandwrotetogetherwas EchoofaRose.Iremembersittingonthefloorofhis apartment,bothofuswenttodifferentpartsoftheroomandsatdowntoworkonindividualparts.Itstemmed fromachorusideaIhad-itwasascollaborativeasitgets.Oldrecordingsfeatureussingingourparts.Songslike Factorywerealmostcutout-songsdidn’tmakeitouttotheworldwithoutRickandIworkingtogether.

Ontheheelsofashortbutsuccessfulfirstlegoftheirsummertour,Gooseembarkedonanevenmoreambitiousrunofshows wheretheyplayedanumberofnewvenues,gainedcountlessnewfans,andcontinuedtopushtheirownmusicalboundariesnight afternight,wrappingupthetourinfrontoftwoofthelargestcrowdsthey’veeverperformedfor.

LegTwo:PartOne

LegTwokickedoffwithatrioofshowsintheband’snativeNortheast,withtheopeningnightbackin Swanzey,NH wheretheir performancelastFallearnedanofficialrelease.Norustwasdetectedandthe84minutefirstsetdeliverednolessthanthree memorable,improv-ladenjamsinArcadia,acoverofRadiohead’sWeirdFishes/Arpeggio,andWysteriaLaneintoLooseEnds.Set twobeganwiththeperfectlyexecutedGoosedebutofTheLabyrinth,theintricatecompositionfromtheirrecentlyreleased ShenanigansNiteClubalbum.AfteranotherstrongversionofWhiteLights(whichhasbecomethenormgoingbacktolastFalland throughout2021),JiveIIfollowedwiththenowsemi-regularbonusjam,andthenafantasticCreatures‘closedout’theset.Per usual,theguyswereshortontimeand,withoutleavingthestage,droppedaSlowReady‘encore’thatwasunfortunatelycutshort whentheplugwaspulledontheeveningbythevenue(duetothestrictcurfew).

ThirtymilesfromWilton, NewHaven mightbetheclosestthingtoahometownshowGooseplaysmovingforward,andforthese twonightsatthisbeautifulnewvenuethereweredefinitelybighomecomingvibes.Theobvioushighlightoftheevening(unlessyou gotengagedinbetweenYetiandSeekers),wasthesecondsetclosingtrioofEarthlingorAlien?>Tumble>FactoryFiction. EarthlingorAlienfeaturedasilky-smoothGregKnightrapandTumble’sspaceyjammeltedperfectlyintoFactoryFiction–which elicitedecstaticcheersfromthecrowdandadevilishgrinfromRich.TheicingonthecakewasthestandaloneSlowReadyjam (whichwasteasedtostarttheshow)thatfinishedtheversionfromthenightprior.Nighttwowascostumenightandthebandcame outhilariouslydressedastheirShenanigansNiteClubtrailerpersonas-hasanyoneseenJeff?Theyaptlyopenedtheshowwitha coverofDukeHerrington’sATributetoGold-whichservedasthethememusictosaidtrailer-followedbyasolidfirstframewith TimetoFleeandSoReady.SettwostormedoutofthegatewithArrow>NightsinWhiteSatin(hearkeningbacktothesame 1/25/20pairing).AnotheruniqueRosewoodHeartfollowedwithajagged,funkyjamintoBobDonandthenwefinallygotour SameOldShenanigans(LTP2/15/19),beautifullydeliveredwiththenewShenanigansNiteClubarrangement.

I’mgonnacutrighttothechasehere...the Perry firstsetAWesternSun>EchoofaRoseis extraordinary.Itrepresentsthe strongest,mostexploratory52minutesofmusicI’veheardtheseguysplay.At29minutesonitsown,themassive,longand windingAWSleavesitsnormalsongstructureataneasygoing,relaxedpace,patientlyexploringthepeacefulterrainbeforeveering offtoamoresinisterplacewhereeachbandmembercontributesequallytoabeautifullydarkjam.Aroundthe23minutemark, Richeffortlesslysteersthegroovebacktowardafinaluptemposegment,triumphantlypeakingandthensettlingseamlesslyintothe openingreggaesoundsofEcho.OncethestandardsectionsofEchoarecompletewegetanotherdelightful16minutesofsuperb improv,consistingofatranquilTedjamfollowedbyawonderfullyblissfuldescendingchordprogressionthatbuildstoaeuphoric climax.Despitethecolossalmomentsofthefirstset,thesecondsetshouldn’tbeoverlooked,asitincludesbothnearperfectsong selectionaswellasexecution,withIntotheMyst,Travelers(theintroductionofPeter’ssynthtothejamisawelcomeenhancement), BobDylan’sIt’sAllOverNowBabyBlue(LTP4/18/15),SpiritoftheDarkHorse[FTPw/(7Hunder)ending],andarguablythe greatestversionyetofTheEmpressofOrganos.NighttwoonthesmallPerrystagestartedwithaslowTumble(akaSlumble,aka Stumble)andthenbroughtmoreextendedfirstsetjamming,includinga19minutecoveroftheGratefulDead’sMississippiHalfStepUptownToodelooanda17minuteHotTea.SettwoincludedasolidcoverofElectricAvenuewithabriefvocaljam,abeautiful ThisOldSea,andafunJiveLeeplayedathyper-speedastheyranupagainstyetanotherhardcurfew.

ThefirsthalfofLegTwowrappedupamongstthelandofthedinosaurs- LegendValley -butGoosewasthepredatorthat weekendandmeltedfacesweretheprey.TheychargedintonightonewithaFlopener,butthisonewasspecial,containinga beautifulIndianRiverjamduringtheintro.YetanotherbigWhiteLightswasupnext,thelongestoftheyearsofarandalsomy favorite,followedbya21minuteArcadiathatrivalsboththegreatnessanduniquenessoftheSwanzeyversion.Settwogaveusour secondSOSofthesummerandastrongerthanusual,andunusuallyplaced,LeadtheWay.ThefocalpointofthesetwasAllINeed, clockinginat24minutesandthesecondjambeganwithHandiniteasing2021withhis‘boy’effect-fuelingfans’curiosityabout when(orif)thesongwillbeplayedlive.Thebandthenrodeanuptempo,wah-heavydancegroovefortheremainderofthesong, eventuallymakingwayforthesomewhatrarecoverofWalterMurphy’sAFifthofBeethoven.AbeautifulrenditionoftheDead’s BrokedownPalaceservedastheencore,sendingtheflockoffansbacktotheircampsitesandhotelswithbigsmiles,andpossiblya tearortwoontheircheeksaswell.ThesecondnightatLVcurrentlysitsatopmanyfans’showoftheyearlists(includingmine),and it’sforgoodreason.SetoneconsistedofdynamiteversionsofTheEmpressofOrganos,RosewoodHeartandLookOutCleveland. Butsettwotookthingstoawholenewlevel,startingwithastaggering21minuteElmegtheWisethatcoveredterritoryrarely venturedintobythesaga-esquenumber.ItcameasnosurprisethattheopeningnotesofMadhuvanbroughtsomeoftheloudest cheersofthenight,butwhentheunexpectedsegueintoMobyhappenedthosecheerswereamplified.Mobymaynotlastverylong butit’sfourorfiveminutesofgurglybassbombsandoneofthetastiestmelodiesyou’llputinyourears.Theonlyquestionleftwas, “AretheygoingbackintoMadhuvan?”.Theanswerwasyesofcourse,andwhatareturntoMadhuvanitwas!Theuniquejam startedoffabitdarkandthenalternatedbetweenfuriousrockandslower,jaggedbreaksbeforebuildingtoitsfreneticpeak.Afun rompthroughClarenceCarter’sStrokin’unexpectedlygavewaytoanupbeat,funkyjamwithgeneroushelpingsofRich’swahand Peter’sclavthatfinally(andagain,quiteunexpectedly)flowedserenelyintotheBhagavadGitaverseofIndianRiver,providinga fittingbookendtothetworemarkablenights.Afteranewintroarrangementwequicklyrecognized726astheencoreandprepared ourselvesfortheperfectendingtotheweekend…thatis,untiltheywrappedup726andlaunchedintoArrow...what?!?Yeah, apparentlytherewouldbenocurfewconcernsonthisnight,andafteran18minuteArrow(fullshowwas30+minuteslongerthan theaverageshowlengthfortheyear),thesatiatedcrowdonceagainlefttheconcertgroundswithwidesmilesandfullhearts.

LegTwo:PartTwo

Andsonowmyownjourneybegins...IleftmyhouseatsunriseonthemorningofJuly1st,embarkingona9day,6show,3statetrip thatI’llsurelyneverforget.Havingbeenover18monthssincemylastGooseshow,Iwasbeyondexcited-notonlytoseemy favoritebandbutalsotoshedtheconfinementandclaustrophobiaofCOVIDandembracetheexpanseandfreedomoftraveland theopenroad. Let’sgooooooo!!!

Thesecondhalfoflegtwobeganin EauClaire withapairofshowsatthePinesMusicPark,agorgeousvenuewithalarge, professionalstageandwide-openconcertgroundssurroundedbyshadedcampsitesamongsttheconiferousevergreens.These werethefirstGooseconcertssinceearly2020withoutpodsoranysocialdistancingrequired,andwithalimitedcapacityof1,000 attendeesitfeltbothintimateandspaciousatthesametime.Thesundrenchedfirstset(weatherwouldnotbeafactorherenor foranyoftheremainingshowsoftherun)includedasolidTimetoFleeopeneraswellasunexpectedlyextendedversionsofBilly Joel’sMovin’OutandButterRum.Anearly20minuteSlowReadyopenedupsettwoandfeaturedanotherunexpected,atypical jamthatfinallydissolvedintoDrive.TheprevioustwoDrive’softheyearwereunfinished,soIwasthrilledtogetafull-fledged renditiononthisnight,withthefirstjambeingalengthy,patientslow-buildandthesecondamedium-paced,danceablegroovethat seguednicelyintoacoverofKylieMinogue’sCan’tGetYouOutofMyHead,whichinturnseguedintoJorgeBen’sMasQueNada.A shortandsweetTumbleendedthenightonahighnote.Saturday’sfirstsetgaveustwomemorablejams:TheWayItIsandYeti. Theformer,BruceHornsby’sclassicsongabouteconomicandcivilrights,tippedthescalesatalmost19minutesandcontainedan absolutelysublimejam;oneofmyfavoritesoftheyear.AndwhereTheWayItIswentfullTed,Yetiwasstraightfire;atjustunder17 minutesit’soneofthelongestversionseverplayed,andarguablythebest.Anotherrelativelyshortsecondsetofferedupstandard (read:stillprettydarngood)takesonCreatures,ShamaLamaDingDongandRosewoodHeart,alongsideanoutstandingSpiritof theDarkHorse,aThisOldSeasetcloserwithaunique,attimesplinko-ishjamandasuccinctHotTeaencore.

Forthoseofuswhoweren’tluckyenoughtoseeGooseinsmallbarsbackin2017or2018,the PineCreekLodge showswere ourbestshotatanexperienceevenremotelysimilar.Withonlyabout500hardcorefans(plussomelocals),atinystage,an amazinglypicturesquesetting,and(ahem)asemi-professionalsoundsystem(google‘Rick’sDrivesololiterallyleavesLivingston speakersmoking’),theseshowsfeltlikeabackyardconcertthatthewholefriendlyneighborhoodshowedupto.PaulSimon’sMe andJulioDownBytheSchoolyard,withspecialguestsTorrinDaniels(KitchenDwellers)onbanjoandAndrewGoedeonmouth whistle,wasverygood,butthehighlightofthesetwasAllINeed,whichconsistedofasoaringfirstjamandahighlydanceable, synth-ladensecondjamthatmorphedintoaRosesareFree-esquevibeforthefinalfewminutes.TravelersstartedsettwoandI washappytohearPeter’ssynthpresentagain...hopefullythisisthenewnorm.TorrinDanielswasinvitedontothestageoncemore, andFlodownprovedtobeamuchbettervehicletoshowcasehisbanjoskills,mostnotablyduringtherowdy,foot-stompingintro. NighttwobegansomewhatsurprisinglywithanotherDrive,butnocomplaintshere,especiallyafterhowthesetwouldunfold.The introwasstretchedtofiveandahalfminutesandbythe20minutemarktheywerejustwrappingupthefiercefirstjambefore jumpingintoaspiritedElizabeth.TherestofthesetincludedthetraditionalfolksongLizaJane(LTP11/7/19),JiveI,Earthlingor Alien?,andendedwithDrive’ssecondjamtocompletethetastysetonesandwich.Madhuvangotthesecondsetunderwayand shortlyaftertheverse/chorussectionwascomplete,JacksonBrowne’sDoctorMyEyescameoutofnowhereandprovideduswith ascorchingjambeforetransitioningbackintoMadhuvanwhich,withoutfinishing,seguedflawlesslyintoahauntinglybeautiful IndianRiver.AfterahighlyenergizedHotTeasetcloser,theunforgettablePineCreekLodgeexperiencecametoacloseasthe bandencoredwithadoubledoseoftheDeadintheformofthetraditionalPeggy-OandBobbyBland’sTurnOnYourLoveLight. Withbothnights’attendancefiguresataround5,000(Saturdaywassoldout),I’mnotsurewhichiscrazier:thefactthattwodays priorIsawthemwitharound500people,orthefactthatthelasttimetheyplayedin Denver (12/6/19atCervantesOtherSide)I sawthemwithabout500people.Eitherway,itwasarealjoytobepartofsuchabigmomentinGoose’sascent.Friday’sfestivities commencedwithanapropoSoReady,anditwasimmediatelyclearthatthebandwasindeedreadyforthisbigstagewithboth RichandPetertakingconfident,impassionedsolos.AfterbreezingthroughYeti,Honeybee,andAWesternSun,theycasually droppeda16minuteInYourEyes,showcasinganumberofGoose’salluringqualities:coversongsensibilities,Rick’ssilkyvocals, andwholebandimprovisationskills.Thissecondsetisonewheresongtimingsand/oralackofmorethanoneextendedjam beliestheresplendencyandpowerofwhatwasactuallyplayed.It’sanotherexampleofimpeccablesongselectionandflawless execution,alongwithaslewofcrowd-pleasing,euphoricmoments.FishintheSeaisoneofmyfavoritecovers,andIntotheMyst, SOS,ElmegtheWise,726,andTheEmpressofOrganosarealltop-tieroriginalseachelicitingapotent,emotionalresponsefrom fans.ThisisasetI’llplayonrepeat,withouttheserviceofaskipbutton.

Saturday’sshowpickedrightupwherethepreviousnightleftoff,openingwithtighttakesonJiveIIandTimetoFlee,followedby equallywellplayedversionsofButterRum(withmanagerBenBaruchonpercussion),TurnedClouds,andYourOcean.Thetorrid typeIArcadiawasanothercaseofbandandaudienceengaginginacycleoffeedingoffofoneanotheruntilreachingafeverpitch, andthenSeekersontheRidge(pt1&pt2),withitslyricalnodtoColorado,endedtheimpressivepenultimatesetoftheweekend. TherewasapalpablefeelingofexcitementandanticipationintheairasRickpickedthefamiliaropeningriffofArrowtoleadoffthe secondset,andtheensuing21minutesgaveuseverythingwe’dhopedfor:soaringpeaks,anextendeduptempodancegroove,a fewdazzlingminutesofdarkness,andaslicksegueintoCreatures.Thecollectivedancepartycontinuedforanother15minutesas Creaturesensurednoonestoppedshakingtheirlimbs,ultimatelybuildingtoafrenziedclimax,andthenboom:Moby,a magnificentlandingpad,servingasacounter-balancetotheflurryofnotesandbeatsthatprecededit,drenchingthecrowdwith Trevor’sliquifiedbassandRich’sgorgeousmelodies.Backonstageforthetourclosingencore,andafterthecustomaryshout-outs tothecrew,BenstartedupTheBand’sDon’tDoIt,thuswrappingupthehistorictwo-nighter.Atthestartoftheshow,Petersaid, “WeloveColorado,man.We’regonnakeepcomingbackhere.”Ibelievehim-I’malreadycountingdownthedaysuntiltheirreturn! I’llleaveyounowwithaquoteandonefinalthought.InWalden,Thoreausaysofthewrittenword, “(It)isthechoicestofrelics...at oncemoreintimatewithusandmoreuniversalthananyotherworkofart;nottoberepresentedoncanvasorinmarbleonly,but tobecarvedoutofthebreathoflifeitself.” Ibelievethissentimentcanbeappliedtomusicaswell,andIwillalwayshaveadeep appreciationfortheartthatGoose(andeveryothermusician/bandIlove)shareswithusandtheworld. AreyouaddictedtoGoose? Nothingelseseemstohitthespot;youroldfavoriteband doesn’tsetyoursoulonfireanymore.YoufindyourselfdownanotherVasudoYouTube rabbithole,anxiouslyawaitingthenextsoundboardtodrop.Youjustneedthattension andrelease,thatbraintingling,spine-shiveringpeaktoliftyououtofyourfunk.Thisis yourbrainonGoose.

SoyoupilgrimagetoFredtheFestival,whereeveninthemiddleofaVirginiafarmfield underthehotAugustsun,you’llgetchillsattheaGoosetictrioset.Here,youarenot alone.Here,thosesensationsareamplifiedinthecompanyoffellowpleasure-seeking individualsunitedbyacommongoal—chasethefeeling.So,what’sgoingonhere? Whereevenishere?What’smakingusfeellikeweneedthis?

Board-certifiedmusictherapist,multi-instrumentalist,andfeatured GooseChick TamaraSastow shedslightontherolecommunityplaysinourmusic experienceandourperceivedGooseaddiction.She,likemanyofus,discoveredGooseat adifficulttimeinherlife: “Iwasn’tinagreathead-space,andtherewasjusttoomuch goingoninmymindtotryandfitsomethingelseinthere…butIhappenedtooverhear [BingoTour]ShipofFoolsandmyheartjustmelted…Thisbandshowedme,inavery profoundway,thatitisimpossibleformetoknowwhatIdon’tknow.” Thiscommon experienceinourcommunityisnotacoincidence.

Thissensationiscalled musicalfrisson.Musiccanactivateyouramygdala,theemotion controlcenterofyourbrain,sendingshiversdownyourspine.Itmimicsthewaycocaine elicitsareleaseofdopamine.Thistemporarydistractionmakesusfeelgood!Addicted even!Turnsout,thesecretsauceisn’tjustinthemusicandourphysicalreactiontoit; it’sthesafe,liminalspaceGoosecreateswithus.That’swheremusictherapyandthe journeytowardhealingbegins.Forhermaster’sthesis,Tamaraexploredusingmusic therapyasatoolforaddictionrecovery. “Ourscene,andthejambandworldingeneral, playedahugeroleinshapingmyapproachasaclinician.Myexperienceatliveshowsis afoundationalaspectofmyphilosophicalorientationwithinmusictherapy.”
