ELGIN COUNTY’S MUNICIPALITIES

WELCOME TO ELGIN! Elgin County offers visitors a delightful mix of urban and rural experiences within its seven municipalities. It boasts kilometres of stunning shoreline with four “Ports of Elgin”. Dining is served up on beach or patio, in pine forest or Quaker settlement, and often features fresh local produce, wines or catch of the day. Art and entertainment is presented on an intimate scale with captivating impact. Intriguing vestiges of marine and railway boom-times are to be found in our place names, museums, architecture and stories. Picturesque landscapes from serene to breathtaking form the backdrop for golf, hiking, bird-watching, cycling and boating. From chic clothiers to award-winning garden centres, a variety of shops are tucked away in often surprising places. Local sites attract birds and birders by the thousands—just one of a myriad of reasons for visitors to flock to Elgin County.

some unique annual events, including ‘Cactus, Cattle & Cowboys’ and the Rodney-Aldborough Agricultural Fair (celebrating 160 years in 2014). Port Glasgow Marina, with 80 slips, full-service washrooms and paved pier, is one of Ontario’s prime pickerel and perch fishing spots. Adjacent to the marina, you will find miles of largely undiscovered beach. Back-roads and trails beckon trekkers, hikers, bikers and bird-watchers—they will be rewarded with vistas of rural beauty and several farm gate markets offering the best in local produce, including three pick-your own/ready-picked blueberry farms. There’s more to discover in West Elgin’s towns, including a remarkable bank turned cultural hub in West Lorne, friendly country restaurants, shops, retreats, and even a tiny historic jail in Rodney.

Southwold Prehistoric Earthworks is the only archaeological site of its kind in Canada. Its double mounds of earth are the remains of a Neutral village inhabited around 1500 AD. Enjoy the many species of birds as you stroll on the ‘War to Roses’ walking trail at the Fingal Wildlife Management Area, symbolically named in reference to the site’s past as a World War II training facility. The site is especially popular with amateur astronomers, who find that its isolation from light pollution provides the perfect dark sky.

THE MUNICIPALITY OF CENTRAL ELGIN

Including Port Stanley, Union, Sparta & Belmont Ingredients for the quintessential charming country getaway are found in abundance in this growing municipality. The area is a cultural delight, featuring several small galleries and the popular Port Stanley Festival Theatre. Enjoy golfing, bird-watching, or charter a boat for an afternoon cruise. The fishing village of Port Stanley boasts one of the finest stretches of sandy beach on Erie’s north shore. It is also popular for its trendy shops, inns and dining from beachside to casual upscale. It’s an authentic fishing village, perfect for walking. Take in a memorable sunrise or sunset, watch the boats coming and going under the 1939 King George VI Lift Bridge or take a ride on the Port Stanley Terminal Rail, Elgin County’s longest running tourist attraction. The historic village of Sparta traces its roots to the Quakers in 1813—many of the local buildings, the 1827 clay and straw Forge and Anvil Museum and a traditional tearoom reflect that era. The village includes the studio of a world renowned artist, unique shops, candle maker, and a nearby lavender farm and winery.

THE TOWNSHIP OF MALAHIDE

Including Springfield & Port Bruce Escape the pace of the everyday within Malahide by enjoying the Muskoka like woodlands, Carolinian forests planted centuries ago and rich agricultural lands. Come and discover a community rooted in rich heritage where both Old Order Amish settlements and modern day communities co-exist. You will see horse drawn buggies along country roads, members tending their crops and raising livestock, furniture

makers and harness shops, naming just a few of the attractions. While exploring Malahide, pick up some fresh local produce at a roadside stand, take a minute at the migratory bird viewing area for the opportunity to see a rare sight, or spend an afternoon at an apiary and bee adventure farm guaranteeing family fun. Discover local artists by stopping at an art gallery or rural pottery shop and tearoom. If you are seeking a long, lazy afternoon of sand and sun or trying your luck at fishing off the pier, the shores of Lake Erie on the tranquil beach of Port Bruce await you. Whatever your path is for the day, Malahide offers a bountiful array of charm and services.

THE TOWN OF AYLMER

On a stroll around Aylmer, you will find a busy downtown lined with specialty shops and services, Aylmer Farmers’ Market on Tuesdays, beautifully restored Old Town Hall Theatre, active area museum and modern community complex. Linger awhile in the extensive park system including Rotary Park, only the second in Canada to be certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. Take the heritage walk or visit the murals that illustrate the town’s history, then stop for a home-style meal to complete your touring, walking or shopping experience. Are you visiting from a distance? Aylmer has a beautiful bed and breakfast in a heritage home, and an inn with country charm.

THE MUNICIPALITY OF BAYHAM

Including Straffordville, Vienna, Port Burwell & Eden The HMCS Ojibwa, Canada’s first Oberon Class submarine, put down roots in Bayham in 2013, offering tours May to November. Elgin County’s furthest east location is also home to the Edison Museum of Vienna, Port Burwell Marine Museum & Historic Lighthouse and Port Burwell Provincial Park. Popular events like Edison Fest, Port Burwell Tub Daze and the Straffordville Watermelon Fest offer tons of family fun. The Erie Shores Wind Farm, spread along Bayham’s lakefront, provides sustainable energy and an attraction for sightseers and photographers. A fall tour through Bayham, with its picturesque valleys, stately windmills and lake scenery, rivals the best Ontario has to offer. Come experience the long sandy beaches, delectable Lake Erie perch served at several local restaurants, and herb farm with open air tearoom. WWW.ELGINTOURIST.COM

EXPERIENCE • ATTRACTIONS & MUSEUMS The Arts & Cookery Bank

ATTRACTIONS & MUSEUMS Our attractions and museums offer a true cultural smorgasbord, from the Arts & Cookery Bank’s focus on rural culture to the submarine Ojibwa, and museums where our stories are kept alive through the efforts of curators, historians and many volunteers. The Attawandaron or Neutral nation established villages in this area until the mid-17th century. In 1803, the enigmatic Colonel Thomas Talbot arrived on the fertile shores of Elgin County, overseeing the settlement of an area from Woodstock to Windsor. Let the Elgin County Heritage Guide be your starting point as you discover a hero, admire a visionary or relive an adventure. You can also hit the trails to explore our heritage through three Barn Quilt Trails, which link sites with colourful mounted “quilt blocks”, each with its own story.

Our newest attraction is the Oberon Class submarine, HMCS Ojibwa in Port Burwell. Ojibwa participated in many clandestine actions during her 34 years in service, her astonishing capacity for stealth making her a key player during the Cold War. Visitors can explore the submarine’s nooks and crannies, learn about her inner workings and hear the extraordinary stories from the submariners who lived them. Whether you are in the mood for an afternoon of browsing in a quaint village, or for being part of the main street bustle, you will find it at one of the spots below. Or head out to discover a unique find at one of the many hidden shopping gems on the quiet back roads of Elgin County. Much of the charm of the Village of Sparta lies in its Quaker heritage—many of the homes and businesses reside in original buildings representing period architecture dating back to 1825. In Sparta, or nearby, you will find interesting shops, a tearoom, art galleries, a lavender farm, a winery, and the Forge & Anvil museum. Stroll Downtown Aylmer for small-town friendliness and shopping at an un-hurried pace. Stop in at quaint

fashion boutiques, fragrant bakeries, unique gift and souvenir stores and shops offering antiques, flowers, furniture and more. Savour a tasty home-style meal or grab a bakeshop or deli treat and head to the park along the creek, just north of Talbot. Port Stanley has some intriguing history which adds to its unique charm. Today, it has become a mecca for “girls’ day out”, or a getaway with a little shopping thrown in. The village is small, but the shop owners have a knack for finding the best treasures for their customers, from fashions to home décor and gifts. Port is also home to two multi-artist galleries which are well worth a look. Elgin County offers exciting variety and friendly help for the green-thumbed shopper. There are award-winning nurseries, water gardens and sources of hard-to-find plants for specialty landscaping and gardening. WWW.ELGINTOURIST.COM

TASTE Savour Elgin photos by Philip J Bell of Shutter Studios

Savour Elgin celebrates local food, wine and agritourism in partnership with quality restaurants. Members of Savour Elgin must either grow or produce their own products and in the case of restaurants have 25% of their food purchased locally (within 100km). Savour Elgin provides opportunities for tourists to engage all five senses in savouring the bounty of Elgin. The Trail takes you on a tour of some of the best restaurants, cafés, farms and other taste-tantalizing culinary attractions.

Clovermead Bees & Honey

The program also connects producers and chefs. Our restaurants are proud to say they utilize member markets and agritourism locations in preparing their signature dishes—look for their Savour Elgin member signs on display.
