Being physically active and spending less time being sedentary has health benefits for all age groups. Whether it is joining a sports team, taking dance lessons or being creative with an art class, Active Elgin can help you find an activity that interests you and your family. Many people don’t know how much or what type of activity they need to stay healthy. The Canadian Physical Activity guidelines give the minimum amount of physical activity needed for health benefits and the Sedentary Behaviour guidelines give the maximum time that should be spent being inactive. For information on how much activity you and your family need for health benefits, see pages 34-35 and visit www.csep.ca. Now is the time to get up and get moving! We encourage you to read this guide and discover the many great organizations, programs, and services that are offered right here in Elgin-St. Thomas. We would like to hear from you! The Active Elgin Coalition would like to know how effective the Active Elgin website and guide has been in helping you and your family find sports, leisure and recreation activities available in Elgin-St. Thomas. When you fill out the on-line survey fluidsurveys.com/s/activeelgin/, you will be entered into a draw for a seasonal pass to one of the three Conservation Authorities: Catfish Creek Conservation Authority, Kettle Creek Conservation Authority or Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority. For trails and recreational activities provided at each area of the Conservation Authorities, see the Elgin-St. Thomas Cycling and Hiking Trail Map. Community Health Centre
For residents of our community, the West Elgin Community Health Centre is a trusted friend for getting and staying well, as well as for supporting you through a time of illness or disability. Our team of health care professionals work together to provide medical care as well as a broad range of community programs that touch people in all stages of life. In everything we do, we consider the factors in our clients’ and program participants’ lives that make a difference to their health and well-being: shelter, education, food security, income, safety, peace and justice, and the surrounding environment. We work hard to ensure that issues like language, literacy, poverty and geography don’t get in the way of great health care. We also understand that wellness includes the opportunity and ability to take part in your health care. We encourage all of our clients and program participants to take responsibility for their own lives and to be active partners in all health care decisions. Individuals and families interested in receiving care from a physician or nurse practitioner must first complete an application form. From there, names are added to the waiting list. When a physician and nurse practitioner have room in their practice for new clients, you will be called for an intake interview. At this interview you will discuss your health care needs and we will tell you about what we have to offer. Even if you do not receive care from our physicians or nurse practitioners, you can participate in some of our other programs and services. Visit our website for more information or call and speak to one of our team members. Some of Our Programs and Services: For all ages: • Physician and Nurse Practitioner Medical Services • Family and Individual Counseling • Nutritional Services • Chiropody Services • Diabetes Education & Support (18+)

ACTIVE ELGIN 2013 NOW IS THE TIME TO GET UP AND GET MOVING! Be active EVERYDAY! • • • • •
LIMIT time being inactive
Walk or bike to school or work Take the stairs Play a sport Garden Play outdoors
• • • • •
Sitting Using the computer Playing video games Reclining in a chair Watching TV
The Canadian Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines recommend... Ages 0-4 Infants under a year should have: Interactive floor-based play several times a day. (tummy time, reaching for toys, rolling on the floor and crawling) Children 1-4 years of age should have: Active play several times a day, that keeps them moving and develops movement skills in both indoor and outdoor settings, for a total of at least 180 minutes. (dancing to music, skipping, and running) Energetic play for at least 60 minutes by 5 years of age.
Ages 5-17 Children and Youth should have: Daily physical activity for at least 60 minutes that makes them sweat a little and breathe harder (moderate intensity such as, bike riding and skating) to activities that make them sweat and “be out of breath” (vigorous intensity such as, running, swimming, or playing a sport). Vigorous activity at least three days a week. Muscle and bone strengthening activities at least 3 days a week. (climbing, jumping and skipping)
34
www.activeelgin.ca
ACTIVE ELGIN 2013 Ages 18 and older Adults should have: Aerobic physical activity in bouts of 10 minutes or more, for a total of at least 150 minutes a week that makes them sweat a little and breathe harder (moderate intensity, such as, a brisk walk or bike ride) to aerobic physical activity that makes them sweat and be “out of breath (vigorous intensity such as, jogging and cross county skiing). Muscle and bone strengthening activities at least 2 days a week (heavy gardening or light weight-resistance training) Adults 65 years and older should: Do activities that improve their balance such as yoga and dance.
Start slowly and gradually increase time, frequency, and intensity of activity. Being physically active helps all age groups in prevention and maintenance of some chronic diseases. More daily physical activity provides greater health benefits. Limiting Inactivity and Screen Time means Greater Health Benefits For healthy growth and development, infants and children 0-4 years of age should spend little time being inactive and should sit for no longer than one hour at a time in a stroller or high chair. Screen time is not recommended for children under 2 years of age. For children 2-4 years of age, limit screen time to under one hour a day; less is better. Children and youth 5-17 years of age should spend limited time in (motorized) transport and sitting for long periods of time. Limit recreational screen time to no more than 2 hours a day, instead spend time outdoors.
