On behalf of Elgin County Council, I am delighted to welcome you to the sunny shores of Elgin County! After two years in a pandemic we are all eager to get out of the house and explore all that our province has to offer, and there is no better place to do that safely this summer than in Elgin County. This Visitor’s Guide is a valuable resource that will help you navigate your time in our communities.

Elgin is located in the heart of southwestern Ontario, and spans over 100km of pristine Lake Erie shoreline. Rolling country landscapes and quaint towns and villages make Elgin an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Elgin County is the perfect place to slow the pace of life and savour every moment. Enjoy a gourmet meal using fresh, local ingredients grown just down the road; spend an afternoon discovering unique treasures at trendy boutiques; wander through local art galleries; or finish the day with a leisurely sunset stroll on one of our many sandy beaches.

Sports enthusiasts can enjoy a myriad of activities including hiking and cycling on scenic roadways and tree-lined trails; practicing their swing at one of Elgin’s golf courses; or by getting out on the water in a canoe, stand-up paddleboard or pleasure craft.

Discover St. Thomas' rich Railway history with a visit to the CASO station and the Elgin County Railway Museum. Of course, no visit to St. Thomas is complete without a visit to the Jumbo Elephant monument. After visiting Jumbo wander down the road to the St. Thomas Elevated Park, the first elevated park in Canada!

Take a stroll down the Whistle Stop Trail, through beautiful Pinafore Park, Waterworks Park or explore our 32.5 km of trails throughout the city.

St. Thomas' is home to one of the province's leading Farmers' Markets. The Horton Farmers' Market began in 1878 and is still a favourite meeting place on Saturday mornings from May to October.

Find some fun street art and murals on everything from boxcars to buidings. St. Thomas boasts 34 historic and contemporary murals telling the story of St. Thomas' past, present and future.

Space to Spoon Space to Spoon is a hands-on experience, with stunning graphics and interactive elements for visitors of all ages. The exhibit showcases the technology that transforms satellite images into agricultural applications in a way that encourages informal learning among audiences.

Developed by Ingenium, Canada’s Museums of Science and Innovation, in partnership with the Canadian Agriculture and Food Museum and the Canadian Space Agency.

Canada’s Oldest Annual Picnic The summer exhibit will commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Baker Family Re-union and Picnic, the oldest of the many family reunions that were once popular in Elgin County. A complementary exhibit on the 19th century picnic tradition will illustrate the many union, club, fraternal, school, and church picnics that were often held at the lake ports. These events, with their ancillary trains, boats, and bands, constituted major social occasions.

Cipher/Decipher

Visitors can scramble their own messages using a cipher wheel, tackle puzzles, test their cyber smarts to find out how safe their personal information is online, and see how an authentic Enigma cipher machine works by sending a message and watching how Enigma creates a new message.

Developed by Ingenium, Canada’s Museums of Science and Innovation in partnership with the Communications Security Establishment.
