THE WISH

- BY ASHLEY WEAVER

We wanted you to have a say on the image that will entice people to visit Elgin County in 2020 and beyond. Thank you to the 42 individuals that submitted photos and those 6,500 voters in our “We’ve Got You Covered” Photo Contest. With just over 800 votes, Ashley Weaver of Weaver Photography’s image was chosen to grace this year’s cover. Who would have guessed that Ashley started her business only six months before winning this contest? As a mom of three, Ashley can always be found with a camera in hand to capture those important moments in her children’s lives. It’s this passion that has allowed Ashley to specialize in family and children photography. She now travels throughout Elgin County to capture other family’s special moments. Ashley notes that the beaches in Port Stanley and Springwater Conservation Area are a few of her favourite backdrops.

5

When Ashley learned about our contest, she sifted through her portfolio, and it was one of her own photos that stood out, a photograph of 11-year-old Lily Vanderydt at Erie Rest Beach in Port Stanley. For Ashley, this photo showcases how important it is for youth to get out into nature and become inspired by the beauty that is Elgin County. Ashley is proud to be surrounded by so many other small businesses and entrepreneurs, and she can only hope that her children and the children she photographs can continue this legacy. Ashley wants everyone to know that Elgin County is a great place to dream, hope, and simply wish. Congratulations, Ashley Weaver and all the best in your photography career in Elgin!

SETTING RECORDS

Rodney, Port Glasgow, West Lorne & Eagle It’s time to set the record straight. Rodney is in-fact home to the smallest jail in North America, measuring in at 4.5m by 5.4m. Record your visit to the Ye Olde Jail and share your photo with us by ‘gramming’ #ElginCounty! Head south to Port Glasgow to relax on its Blue Flag Beach, which is 1 of only 27 in Canada. Beaches are designated Blue Flag for having high environmental and quality standards. So dust off your giant flamingo floatie and flock to Port Glasgow to see what the hype is about! Travel due east down Talbot Line, or Talbot as locals call it, but don’t blink or you might miss the hamlet of Eagle. Don’t be fooled by its size, nestled here is Elgin’s first brewery, Natterjack Brewering Company Ltd., that is known for its bald, oops, we mean bold flavours! (See what we did there?)

ENDLESS DESSERTS Dutton & Wallacetown

Good thing we spell checked this guide ten times over, because how awkward would it be if we said endless deserts. An easy way to remember the difference is that dessert is spelled with two ‘S’s because you should always savour at least two sweets.

Tall Tales Café @ectoronto

You’re in luck, because Tall Tales Café in Wallacetown is your one-stop-shop, with a post office, variety store, gas station, and restaurant all-in-one place. Chef John Marleitner bakes some of the best pies around with a crust that is out of this world! Head north to the town of Dutton for another sweet spot, Two Old Crows Studio Café, to savour that second dessert. We know that sharing desserts is a big no-no, but we promise to share your photo if you share it with us!

David Kilpatrick, Architect

JANUARY 18 - APRIL 4, 2020 The 1870s was a boom-time in Elgin-St. Thomas set-off by the building of two rival rail lines. Many of the surviving commercial blocks, homes and churches from that era are a testament to the prosperity of the times. Many of these are the legacy of a young architect David Kilpatrick (1852-1902) whose brief time in the area left us with some of our finest buildings. Present-day images of his work are complemented by period photos and artifacts. Guest Curator Paul Baldwin

My Story, My Tattoo

APRIL 18 - AUGUST 22, 2020 My Story, My Tattoo features 32 photographs and stories of people and their amazing tattoos. The exhibit includes audio stations, videos, and text panels. Participants represent every walk of life – from a cancer survivor to teachers and their students, a firefighter and a farmer – and all living throughout Wellington County. All of the individuals were open and honest, and their stories and personalities are represented through this series of thought-provoking and colourful images. A Travelling Exhibit from the Wellington County Museum and Archives

Hockey

SEPTEMBER 5, 2020 - DECEMBER 23, 2020 This one-of-a-kind travelling exhibition offers visitors an exciting interactive experience showcasing high points in the sport from both yesterday and today. This engaging exhibition brings the history of the sport to life through profiles of participants at both the professional and amateur levels. It is presented in a series of graphic panels using photographs and reproduction of key artifacts, memorabilia and works of art. Also included are audio archives and an audio-visual interactive where visitors can record their own running commentary of a portion of a hockey match.

The Village of Sparta and its surrounding area may be home to more than 300 people, but unfortunately, Gerard Butler isn’t one of them. All kidding aside, this actually is a real town here in Elgin County. Don’t believe us? Come see the quaint village for yourself, where the main streets are lined with unique shops and art galleries galore. With artisan candles, handmade pottery, one-of-a-kind jewellery, and handcrafted home décor, you’ll quickly discover why the village is called sp‘ART’a after all! Journey just 3km east of the village and you’ll step foot into Europe. Well, not really, but you’ll feel like you’re in the south of France when you see the purple-hued paradise in the fields at Steed and Company Lavender. Breathe in the tranquillity that can only come from their lush lavender.

BUZZING WITH EXCITMENT Aylmer & Area

Aylmer and area is the bee’s knees, or at least we like to think so! From the queen’s flag to the queen bee, it’s all here for you to discover! Aylmer’s Old Town Hall is located in the heart of the Town of Aylmer and is one of the most breathtaking buildings at that. Once you step inside the Aylmer Performing Art Centre’s space, you’ll be in awe when you look up to the ceiling to see the giant Union Jack painted on the ceiling. This flag is otherwise known as the Royal Union Flag here in Ontario, and is flown as an allegiance to the crown. As for the queen bee, this can be found in another type of colony, a honey bee colony at Clovermead Adventure Farm. We like to think that this is the most magical place for kids and kids at heart, to learn what the buzz is about when it comes to bees. Jump on their giant jumping pillow, zip line your troubles away, or if you’ve ‘bean’ here before, you know about their enormous soybean box, like a sandbox but without the sand. NO FOALING AROUND HERE Springfield, Belmont & Area

We couldn’t possibly call ourselves a rural community if we didn’t pay tribute to the many mammals that also call Elgin County home. Here in Belmont, Springfield, and area, there are probably just as many farm animals as there are people. Full Circle Ranch invites you to giddy-up and experience a rancher’s lifestyle. With riding lessons and trail riding, you’ll be saying yee-haw and howdy-partner in no time. You may even get lucky and see a foal (a young horse) on the farm. If you’re searching for more of a relaxing experience, here you can also try goat yoga, which is a goatly-awesome experience. While we are on the topic of relaxation, no trip to this area is complete without a stop at From the Meadow. AN ODE TO EDISON Staffordville, Vienna & Eden If not for Thomas Edison, How dark it would be. For that, we owe him a ton. We’re sure you’d agree! You may wonder why the poem about Edison and why in Vienna, Ontario of all places…Well, Thomas Edison himself spent many years here visiting his grandfather, Samuel Edison. Samuel was a loyalist from New Jersey, who settled in Vienna in 1811. There is still a plaque of the Edison Homestead where the house once stood. If you’re into cemeteries and history, there are also many of Edison’s relatives buried in the Pioneer Edison Cemetry.

There’s more than just history here to see, why not join in on the Watermelon fun in Straffordville, at the Straffordville Watermelon Fest. This event is known for its watermelon seed spitting contest, where contestants try and spit their seed the furthest. Think we are kidding...come see for yourself.
