ATTRACTIONS & MUSEUMS Our attractions and museums offer a true cultural smorgasbord, from the Arts & Cookery Bank’s focus on rural culture to the submarine Ojibwa, and museums where our stories are kept alive through the efforts of curators, historians and many volunteers. The Attawandaron or Neutral nation established villages in this area until the mid-17th century. In 1803, the enigmatic Colonel Thomas Talbot arrived on the fertile shores of Elgin County, overseeing the settlement of an area from Woodstock to Windsor. Let the Elgin County Heritage Guide be your starting point as you discover a hero, admire a visionary or relive an adventure. You can also hit the trails to explore our heritage through three Barn Quilt Trails, which link sites with colourful mounted quilt blocks, each with its own story.
Our newest attraction is the Oberon Class submarine, HMCS Ojibwa in Port Burwell. Ojibwa participated in many clandestine actions during her 34 years in service, her astonishing capacity for stealth making her a key player during the Cold War. Visitors can explore the submarine’s nooks and crannies, learn about her inner workings and hear the extraordinary stories from the submariners who lived them. Whether you are in the mood for an afternoon of browsing in a quaint village, or for being part of the main street bustle, you will find it at one of the spots below. Or head out to discover a unique find at one of the many hidden shopping gems on the quiet back roads of Elgin County. Much of the charm of the Village of Sparta lies in its Quaker heritage—many of the homes and businesses reside in original buildings representing period architecture dating back to 1825. In Sparta, or nearby, you will find interesting shops, a tearoom, art galleries, a lavender farm, a winery, the Forge & Anvil museum, and the Sparta Church Museum & Cultural Centre. Stroll Downtown Aylmer for small-town friendliness and shopping at an un-hurried pace. Stop in at quaint

fashion boutiques, fragrant bakeries, unique gift and souvenir stores and shops offering antiques, flowers, furniture and more. Savour a tasty home-style meal or grab a bakeshop or deli treat and head to the park along the creek, just north of Talbot. Port Stanley has some intriguing history which adds to its unique charm. Today, it has become a mecca for a girls’ day out, or a getaway with a little shopping thrown in. The village is small, but the shop owners have a knack for finding the best treasures for their customers, from fashions to home décor and gifts. Port is also home to two multi-artist galleries which are well worth a look. Elgin County offers exciting variety and friendly help for the green-thumbed shopper. There are award-winning nurseries, water gardens and sources of hard-to-find plants for specialty landscaping and gardening. WWW.ELGINTOURIST.COM

BIRD WATCHING
A couple of sites attract flocks of people and birds each year. Aylmer Wildlife Management Area (north of Aylmer, near Ontario Police College) is the place to see migrating Tundra Swans in March. Hundreds visit Hawk Cliff (on Lake Erie, east of Port Stanley) in the fall for the raptor migration. Live bird demonstrations are featured during two Hawkwatch weekends in September.

EXPLORE • GOLF & RECREATION Port Bruce, a quaint former fishing village is home to a waterfront Provincial Park where visitors can swim, picnic, and enjoy some of the best Lake Erie yellow perch and walleye fishing off the pier. Over one hundred kilometres of breathtaking Lake Erie shoreline await you in Elgin County. Whether you enjoy the hustle and bustle of a busy portside village or a more tranquil atmosphere, Elgin’s four Ports have something for everyone! The wild beauty of undeveloped lakeshore makes Port Glasgow a recreationist’s dream, whether bird-watching, tramping through the trails of local Carolinian forests, or relaxing on its beautiful beaches. The local marina, small private airstrip and four nearby trailer resorts cater to both pickerel fishers and laid back vacationers. With one of the finest stretches of sandy beach on the North Shore of Lake Erie, Port Stanley offers visitors a unique mix of attractions—theatre, Port Stanley Terminal Rail, Sport in Port equipment rentals, great shops, renowned restaurants, three golf courses, and a thriving arts community. Celebrating 50 Years in 2015!
Enjoy a refreshing day or weekend with all that Mother Nature has to offer.
People in Harmony with Nature
Port Burwell is known as the Jewel of Erie’s North Shore. Nature enthusiasts will appreciate Port Burwell Provincial Park’s hiking trails, campgrounds, day use beach and other amenities. It is also one of the best sites for witnessing spring migrations of birds and butterflies. History buffs will be intrigued by the Historic Lighthouse and Marine Museum’s fine collection of lighthouse lenses and other Lake Erie marine artifacts. They will also be impressed in a BIG way by the HMCS Ojibwa, a Cold War era submarine and first artifact of the future Museum of Naval History.
