Dear Hiring Manager, I am a design professional interested in continuing my career in the field of Landscape Architecture. As an accomplished graduate of the Iowa State University BLA program with a minor in Urban Studies, I am inquiring about the Landscape Designer position available at your firm.

Throughout school, I worked with Iowa’s Living Roadway Community Visioning at my university’s extension and outreach program. At this organization, we collaborated as a team, often coordinating with Trees Forever, to conduct rural Iowa focus groups addressing transportation needs. Helping community members understand how their town fits in a larger bioregional context, and in turn, how that affects their daily transportation decisions was especially rewarding for me. I am eager to use these teamwork and planning skills in the full time position, and the community-engaged, environmentally conscientious work at your firm fits with both my skill set and interests.

At Ironwood Design Group, I have continued my experiences with building community. Much of our work involves creating amenity, mixed-use space for tenants and community members alike. In addition to CAD layouts, Land F/X planting plans, grading and drainage, and details, I have also used modeling software and hand sketching to communicate projects’ close-knit feel. My combined rural and urban background gives me a well-rounded perspective, fit for a diverse range of project types.

I naturally gravitate towards hand drawing, or a mixed media approach. When work comes from the hand, a unique character appears, revealing a sense of place often missed in purely digital work. I deeply internalize that a strong, artful presence in our physical world creates meaning in our lives; I hope to integrate this passion for art into the communities that your firm serves.

A multi-family living community located in Gwinnett County, Georgia, Manor Town Barrett offers residents a lush, ‘Rustic Mountain’ apartment experience, complete with a curvilinear pool, a secondary activity courtyard, and a secluded, meeting courtyard on structure. Both the planting and hardscape schemes stem from the wilderness one might encounter near the southern foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, just two hours north of the project site -- a much needed getaway from the bustle of Atlanta’s metro.

901 West Peachtree Located in the heart of the thriving Midtown scene in Atlanta, Georgia, a new office tower, featuring a fresh on-structure amenity, will replace an inactive zone of empty lots. This rooftop office amenity boasts a wide range of social gathering spaces, including, but not limited to, raised conference rooms, a multi-function lawn, a task bar, terraced amphitheater seating, and sky swings.

My primary role with 901 West Peachtree involved modeling the amenity for visual and spatial understanding, whilst coordinating ideas with fellow architects to ensure the projects’ design goals were met with clarity and unity. Additionally, I was tasked with designing several main meeting elements, such as the amphitheater seating, which features a back wall with staggered, internal lighting.

Matilda Bay Reserve Located on a natural bay inside the mouth of the Swan River, the Matilda Bay Reserve serves a wide range of park-goers in and around the Perth metropolitan area. The park itself is an icon of Perth: it is the popular location for weddings, weekend barbecues, and active recreationalists. For many native to the city, Matilda Bay holds lifelong memories of time spent with family and friends.

Local Habitat Changes

Additionally, the reserve sits next to the University of Western Australia campus, so it has a unique demographic of users and a close relationship to academic life.

6 ‘Blur’ Sites 4-6: Added vegetation corridors extend an enjoyable pedestrian experience from the river, through campus, and to existing corridors near local amenities. ‘Blur’ sites, , are activity nodes needing additional connections between river and campus. These improvements will gradually break up the collector road, which currently dissects the project site.

Master Plan: River to Campus By working around rigid pedestrian barriers, the master plan proposal expands and protects existing habitat, accentuates both urban and waterbody views, and supports diverse recreation opportunities.
