JOHN MAYER & JAZZ FEST Good Love Is On The Way To Aspen

Rock ‘n Roll

J

42

im Horowitz is the Founder/President and CEO of Jazz Aspen Snowmass (JAS). Truthfully, he is much, much more. Horowitz is “the chess master,” he chuckles, and mastermind of gatherings like Jazz Aspen Labor Day Festival with 2019 lineup: John Mayer, Sting, and H.E.R. The JAS June Experience 2019 hosts artists on stages canvasing downtown Aspen, Colorado. It is a smorgasbord of musical genres. Add to his kudos, creator of world-class music education programming. Horowitz started as a professional jazz pianist himself and with his love of music, and natural ability, he was set for music business. With tenacity, he has built a world of music in Aspen’s backyard. “I’m still here!” he hates to take credit, but admits he has pulled it off. Jim continues to commandeer the ship of JAS outdoor Labor Day event and JAS Cafes through both economic fair and foul weather. JAS started in 1991 as a small, three day event. It has grown into far more. This is what lies ahead for this music maker and his passionate pursuit to share the credo that “music cuts across everything like nothing else does!” With changes on the horizon Jim notes “three big things are going on along with everything else.” “Lots of genres will be mixed in close proximity. Like Coachella and New Orleans festivals, there are stages organized thematically. This is the same structure but on a very intimate scale. Like the French Quarter Festival, the charm of going place to place works ideally in Aspen because we have a beautiful and user-friendly pedestrian core.” Jim’s master plan is that someday with the June JAS “Music will be everywhere!” For now, expect six venues: Skye Gallery, The Aspen Art Museum, with its spectacular, rooftop Aspen mountain views, The Little Nell, for close-range

jazz performances, the St. Regis’ Velvet Buck room, and the Belly Up. Lastly, there will be the beloved Benedict VIP tent. “We need it as place where our donors get to gather and now they have five music choices right out of the blocks, catty-cornered between the Regis and Belly Up.” The tent is not just for the bigwigs though. Two public events will also be held there: “A round table talk (lunch and interview) with all the artists as part of The Listen Up Series and Aspen Ideas/Health Symposium and Sunday we are going to do a really fun New Orleans Jazz Gospel brunch led by the great Wycliffe Gordon and bottomless mimosas...very important of course.” Jim is on a heartfelt mission to champion this new city-wide format. “Change is often scary personally and professionally, but sometimes you just know. We are creating intimate experiences because we have seen first hand that people come to Aspen from cities, but there’s no doubt they love Aspen’s combination of urban sophistication and small town ease. The shows are staggered. The idea is that JAS thematically covers a really wide range of music. It’s Jazz, it’s Blues, it’s Soul, R&B, it’s World Music, it’s Funk and that is, of course, by design. It allows us to touch more music, to touch more audiences, frankly, from young to old (with) different kinds of settings, a variety of experiences. The fun of it is it is like a tasting menu with music!” His excitement to share, experience and educate with music is palpable. Jim lives by the phrases newly minted for marketing his JAS events that “combine the genre of music with the different ways you can move from one location to another. You can Take a Jazz Walk, Do a Soul Stroll, Do a Blues Shuffle. It is all about the fun of movement. You can ramble, you can walk,

Rock ‘n Roll

you can run, you can stroll.” Horowitz wants us to hear it all. Like a piece of music, the event is kinetic; it moves and it moves you.

“The Jazz Academy started in 1996. We took it out of mothballs last year after a seven year hiatus. The Great Recession meant we had to put it (on the shelf) like a lot of things but we have put ourselves back together. It is coming back for two weeks. We have recently announced a very significant gift from Edward P. and Sasha C. Bass to fully underwrite the operating costs and expansion for five years and our new collaboration with the Frost School of Music at The University of Miami. Their focus is on performance, as well as training musicians in the business of music. They have an unusually high rate of placing graduates into the actually industry. That curriculum becomes part of our program under Christian McBride’s, the great jazz bassist, direction. It is the most significant thing that has happened to our music education program.”

“Labor Day is off the hook!” John Mayer, Sting, breakout artist H.E.R. Luke Combs, ZZ Ward, Weezer and Portugal The Man are “on fire” and round out the line up. “We are still almost in a state of shock. We have literally been inviting some of them for at least fifteen years. There’s luck and timing involved but we have pulled off some really big acts... Stevie Wonder in 2016, Keith Urban and Maroon 5 in 2017, so that created awareness in the industry. I think that has something to do with it. ”John Mayer will be here! It’s very exciting for us, He is an unbelievable artist, and a killer guitar player. He has been on his own kind of upswing in the last five years, his new tour with the Dead has put him out in front of a new and different audience for him. He has stayed the course and is in a good place musically.” Sting is about to launch a Vegas residency in 2020 at Caesars Palace. Jim humbly explains, “We are just one little stop in their large universe. Sting is an artist whose profile is enormous, not just as a performer and all of his catalogue but

45

Rock ‘n Roll

with his environmental work, as a humanitarian, the kind of person he is and life he has led. It is exciting that he will grace our stage. It is great to have a breakout artist like H.E.R. on the mainstage, Portugal, Weezer...the only thing we can say is ‘God what are we going to do next year for our 30th!?’ It can’t get bigger. We are at our 10,000 people max. It’s not a stadium.”

What is on your bedside table? I don’t read novels with frequency at all. I am interested in travel, culture, boats, politics, the world. Nothing prepared me for the intelligence of The Elephant Whisperer by Lawrence Anthony, Thea Feldman, Graham Spence. What is your playlist?

What do you do to fuel yourself?

46

Jim Horowitz: I like to eat! The challenge, opportunity and responsibility (of JAS) is so big it fuels me too. I’m not experiencing boredom or feeling lost.

It is an endless playlist. I discovered a cool and eclectic, hip internet radio station Jazzradio.net from Berlin. Ranky Tanky, a breakout Southern band out of the culture associated with the low country of South Carolina and Georgia, the Gullah culture. It’s soul. It’s like bouillabaisse!

What would you be doing if not this? What would you be pursuing?

Greatest strength?

If it didn’t involve returning to my humble roots as as piano player, I also love food and came from a restaurant family in a warmer climate in South Florida. Music, food and people are still my favorite combinations. I could see being involved with them on a smaller scale.

I have a strong ability to have a vision of something and how to make it happen. Along the way I have learned to listen to people I respect and never be afraid to embrace and employ and bring their ideas into whatever I may have started. I never felt that it was only my idea. I like smart people and to surround myself with them and bringing them into the process.

Rock ‘n Roll

What’s a challenge you are taking on personally? To really put Jazz Aspen Snowmass on a really stable footing with a permanent home and endowment. It’s in our grasp.

Jim is creating and curating a musical playground for us. He challenges audiences to join him, one cannot separate “him” from the event itself, in intimate salons to throngs of the crowd, GA to VIP. Music is our best form of communicating without boundaries or elite jargon. Jim invites us to move with the music, to explore new worlds. He can’t make it bigger, but count on it being better every year. That is his endgame; he is the “chess master.”

n entrepreneur with his finger on the pulse of business, Quinton Van Der Burgh is one of South Africa’s ultimate success stories. One of the youngest billionaires, he is a true maverick with extensive knowledge of marketing, mergers and business development in the telecommunications industry; import/export; property development; automotive; industrial and trading and mining industries. As a philanthropist Quinton has made it his mission to help not only the people of South Africa but hundreds of thousands around the world. He founded the QVDB Foundation in hopes of making a difference for the people of South Africa and in doing so, inspiring others to do the same. In his latest venture he has partnered up with celebrity photographer John

Russo, who has shot the likes of Serena Williams, Viola Davis, Julia Roberts, Matthew McConaughey and Leonardo DiCaprio to name a few, to produce the book 100 Making a Difference. Seven years ago, John had a vision: To tell the stories about individuals who care for their communities and give back to others. These individuals, celebrities and philanthropists alike, share their stories, their inspirations and tales of what they are doing to make a difference. As a society we are often consumed with our everyday lives. Detaching ourselves from humanity with smartphones and the internet. As a species we need to remember there are those less fortunate and there are those that need a voice. To speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. To give a helping hand to those in need. These people are citizens of the world, showing

love, caring and devotion to others. “The 100 Making a Difference is a collection of amazing human beings who have devoted a large portion of their life to philanthropy,” says Russo.” I loved hearing their stories and seeing the work they have done. In a world where we are judged on how many followers we have or likes we receive, being around these iconic, selfless human beings was nothing short of amazing. I know I am a different person because of this journey. The material items I loved so much and thought I must have to be happy really have no place in my current mindset. I am more focused and aware of the suffering and inhumane acts that go on in our world each day.” Van Der Burgh, reminds us that “success is meaningful when it positively impacts the world. 100 Making a Difference is a book that will, hopefully, remind you of how helping humanity should be at the forefront of your daily thoughts and actions. That you don’t have to make a six-figure donation to a charity in order to make a difference. A smile, your time, a helping hand—these are some of the smallest things that can make a large difference to someone in need.”

From building freshwater wells in Swaziland, Africa (Seth Maxwell) to raising millions of dollars to fight the global AIDS epidemic (Sir Elton John) to making sure “Every Mother Counts” (Christy Turlington) and being a champion for our firefighters’ families (Vicki Minor), these incredible people have shown the true meaning of life and inspire us to strive to be a better people. The collection stars recognizable names such as George Clooney, Maria Shriver, Gwyneth Paltrow, Malala and many more. Side by side with powerful black and white portraits taken by John, are intimate personal stories of how each became passionate about their cause. Proceeds from the book, out in July, will benefit the charities listed within its pages, and there will be fundraising events in major cities including Los Angeles, New York, Miami and Chicago. Kimberly Perry The Band Perry

Doubling Down On Our Instincts Written by Dane Kennedy

R

arely do you have the chance to come across those artistic magicians that are tapped into the Universe as is Kimberly Perry, and then further have the humble opportunity to speak with them and receive the gift of them opening up and allowing you into their mystical world. Carving, honing, finding inspiration through environments and consistently seeking to create their most authentic sounds to please people is at the heart of renowned The Band Perry. Kimberly Perry and her siblings are gunning harder than ever with new songs rolling out this summer that have been inspired not only in their hearts while in places that bring such to life, from Malibu to Tennessee. Without further ado, Kimberly Perry... Dane Kennedy: What has it been like to establish and build the overall sound of The Band Perry?

60

Kimerly Perry: We’ve always historically, from the moment we were an independent rock trio all the way through our time in country music, and now moving forward, we’ve always evolved very quickly and sometimes very dramatically when it comes to the sounds that we were in love with in the moment. One of the things that’s been so exciting and freeing is not really having any boundaries; if we want to put banjos in a song, we’ll do it because we want to. It’s just been such a freeing moment to really look inside our hearts and find “what are we doing 100%?” We have nothing to answer to but “what do we want to do in the studio today?” No rules, it’s been really such a joy. That must be very powerful when it comes to being able to walk into the studio and not having any strict restrictions or constraints so to speak. Yeah it’s been really cool. One of the things we talk about a lot that’s interesting is it really has caused us to double down on our instincts, and what I mean by that is because we like so many styles of music, there was so much music in the house [growing up], and because of that our taste is very chameleon like. We love a lot and we like to play around with a lot and so what happens and makes the challenge in the studio is even if we love it, what makes it 100% our band’s voice right now? It’s definitely refined our instincts...and to encourage each other, and double down and know that “this is definitely the right direction.” That’s been a cool evolution in the way that we work with each other. What have you learned from making such major changes to your sound and style? You personally, what have you learned from doing it? That’s a great question. For me personally it’s about really earning the courage to be my absolute self. There are certain sacrifices that come along with wanting to be yourself all the time. I’m a people pleaser so I always want people to be excited and in love with what I’m making and what I’m bringing to them. Authenticity and perspective, I think that’s really what art is. If you look through the threads of songwriting on a certain project...the songwriting perspective never really changes. We love language, we love poetry, but the sounds have changed as we’ve grown up. Having the courage and awareness to be your absolute self in the moment and share that with people, that’s probably the greatest lesson that I’ve learned.

Rock ‘n Roll

Rock ‘n Roll

62

Rock ‘n Roll

Along with that beautiful answer and taking it a step further, what also inspires you? What inspires you ultimately as you enter the studio or as you’re creating a new sound, or a new song, and you said ultimately for you it’s about pleasing people, so what is that within you that inspires you to do that? I think the one thing that I’m always considering when we’re in the studio, that we talk about is what is this feeling going to be like when it’s live? That’s one thing we focus a lot more on in this generation of our band. We want to build an environment, and there are environments that are determined based on the feelings that we want people to have. Mysticism, escapism, spiritualism, with a brutalist underground. It’s about creating an emotional environment. What also inspires me personally when we’re writing is a physical environment. Some of the new songs were written in Tennessee where we have a farm, some of them were written in Malibu at Shangri-La which is Rick Rubin’s studio...we try to put ourselves in an environment that feels like the sound of the music that we’re wanting to create. Of all the physical environments, which has been the most impactful for you, where you really connected with it and felt it coursing through you? I personally really love working out at Shangri-La in Malibu. I remember feeling like this a place that’s so inspiring. Everytime I step on the ground here it makes me feel like I can do anything, can accomplish anything. It’s been a really special thing to get back to Shangri-La over the past couple months. It’s a very child-like purity when I’m out there. It’s just so inspiring to be out there; that’s my favorite place. It’s just so interesting to get into different moods in a given location. What is most exciting about this next chapter in your life? These songs that we’ve built that we’re going to start rolling out over the summer, we’re gunning even harder, with the songwriting and the sounds that we’re building. It’s funny because even though it’s more subtle maybe than the revolution of a sound, I still feel the evolution happening very very quickly. When the three of you walk into the studio together, that moment you walk in and you’re truly looking to create that sound, that feeling, the music that is your most authentic, what is it like in those moments when you first begin doing that between the three of you? Does it all seamlessly flow, or does it take a little to navigate your way through it, or does it immediately come to life? It definitely takes a minute for us to carve the sound out. What flows the easiest is the song writing portion of it. We will always have an instrument in our hands when we’re writing, it’s the most fluid part of what we do. Then, it’s alright, we have this song, what mood are we setting with it...we try to set an atmosphere and a mood and then comes the time to really start carving. I feel like the songs have a little bit of a mind of their own, but also when we know we’ve landed on the right, the perfect bed for the song, it’s very exciting, and it then happens very quickly at that point, but sometimes it takes weeks to get to that point. It’s really interesting, it’s almost like archeology.

Our vines have better taste in music than most people. With hints of Mozart, Bach, and a strong Chopin finish, Château Gaby believes that music doesn’t simply inspire — it makes a better wine. Along with 350 years of passionate winemaking in the limestone hills of Canon-Fronsac, our winemaker Damien Landouar utilizes genodics, a scientific process that uses music to promote healthy vine development without chemicals or pesticides. The sound waves penetrate the plants, stimulating their growth and natural resistance. The result is a beautiful combination of nature and music in every bottle. We’ve got a pretty label, a pretty château, but at Gaby, it’s what’s under the cork that counts.

TOP 1%

OF ALL WINES IN THE REGION

92-93PTS

Meet the Vintner – Damien Landouar A native of the historic town of Saintes, just north of Bordeaux, Damien Landouar is the winemaker and estate manager for the all-natural Château Gaby estate. For more than two decades, Damien has dedicated his career to winemaking in the Bordeaux region. Damien has a degree in agronomy and completed his post-graduate studies at Vayres Rural Institute to expand his knowledge of winegrowing, oenology, and the wine trade.

The Taste of Estate-Grown Château Gaby is a blend of three grape varieties – Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon – grown on the limestone hills of the estate. Hints of pretty red fruits compliment discretely woody undertones and highlight the sophisticated nature of this wine. Slightly toasted and spicy notes linger on the finish.

Winemaking As It Should Be When it comes to winemaking, no region compares to Bordeaux, France. Using the finest organic growing methods, winemaking here follows the highly-specific processes this storied region is known for. Bordeaux wines are held to the highest of standards, and ours are no exception. Here, winemaking is brought back to its roots, using many of the same processes used thousands of years ago by Ancient Romans among these same hills. Winemaking at Château Gaby relies purely on the natural elements: no chemicals, pesticides, or artificial flavors. By following these guidelines, Bordeaux crafts fine wine in its most authentic form.

What are you reading? The Stranger by Albert Camus. I am a big fan of nonfiction. My life is filled with stories so I am a big fan of Yuval Noah Harari who wrote Sapiens. Journalist John Ronson. What fuels you? energized?

How do keep yourself

Yoga and boxing in equal measure. If I zen out too much, I have to get that power energy as well. Who is an actor or actress you respect from up close or afar? There is an actor in the UK, Jamie Ballard, and he’s like a big brother in loads of ways. He’s a wonderful, wonderful, beautiful, hardworking actor. Alan Rickman was an actor from afar whom I admired. I had the great fortune to meet [him] on a couple of occasions. It’s a sad loss for the world. He was a generous spirit as a man . Who inspires you? My big sister. For pure, unadulterated courage on a daily basis. She goes at life. My mom is an 76 amazing human being. Her main job is being a superhero. If you weren’t an actor? I really don’t know. I wanted to be a fighter pilot when I was a kid, then a fireman, then a doctor... then I just realized I’d been watching Top Gun, Backdraft, and ER. One of the great fortunes I have is that this is what I know I’m supposed to do and the world is just going to have to put up with that. What do you dream of doing next? What is a pie in the sky goal? One of the wonders and frustrations of this career is that you are aware of opportunity constantly. I’m in this place of making sure I’m as good as I can be because I feel that I would enjoy working on a project, perhaps in a movie setting, where I have the time to explore a complex character with a really experienced crew and film-maker. I am going to play Biff Loman in Death of a Salesman at The Ruskin Group Theatre. Anthony Hopkins used to teach there because it is small, a place where you can be real. I’m excited to flex my muscles in theatre. The buzz is wearing off from my last Sam Shepard play and I need that fix again. I know classic theatre is within me.

What’s on your screen? The Wire on repeat for the rest of my life, documentaries, The Big Short. What is a challenge for you? Being honest. And I don’t mean not lying: putting out your wants and desires fully, to be present, to not hide, to be ok imposing myself on the world, a giving up of self to service the story. He is throwing away his crutches, staring at his weaknesses and challenging them to a foot race. Vôtre santé America! Raise a glass to the wines of Vignobles Sullivan: the naturally produced and eco-certified wines of Château Gaby, Moya, Du Parc and Auguste. Meet the owner, Tom Sullivan, the billionaire U.S. businessman recently inducted into the prestigious Brotherhood of Fronsac. Tom says he “never intentionally got into wine. I always pictured Bordeaux as crazy expensive, but really it is way less than Tuscany. We were driving up here and (my broker) was showing me the papers on this place. I said it is way too fancy. I just want to get a small place. I told him, ‘What I want is a good wine that has never been marketed, that is in a good area. He described this as the ‘Brooklyn of Bordeaux.’ People in the region will say in the 1800’s, this was the place to be - higher than Pomerol and St. Emilion. It is coming back. The terroir is good, the wine is good. It just does not have the PR. So, we came in here in 2016. My background is in construction and renovation and I just loved the house and felt good coming in even on a dark, gloomy day in February. The deal came with Moya already certified organic, Gaby was certified in 2018. It fit exactly what I wanted... except for the price!” Tom Sullivan is now proud owner of Château Gaby in the Canon-Fronsac appellation, Château Moya, a castillon-Côtes-de-Bordeaux property, Château du Parc, a SaintEmilion Grand Cru and Château Auguste, a Bordeaux. He loves a challenge and is known for picking winners, so prepare your palate and meet the land and team he chooses wisely to foster the vines and spread the word. Meet Tom’s chief vintner, Damien Landouar, in whom has entrusted the management of all four estates. He is not new to wine. Damien has been immersed in wine and this terroir in particular, as chief operator of these vineyards for twenty-one years. “The main thing is to be able to look at all through to the end: prune the vines, make the wine, then drink the wine. I prefer to be in charge of everything, so I understand everything.” His family was in the railroad business, but he fell in love with nature. He studied agriculture and in 1995, he came to this area for a post-Baccalaureate degree. He studied marketing for wine and spirits and realized, “No, definitely not my job.” He wanted to be outdoors and working with the earth and its seasons. “I started at Gaby with the first owner in 1997 and he proposed more responsibility. I have never worked in another vineyard. I have studied at others, but never worked anywhere else.” Tom jokes, with clear admiration, “He (Damien) is from Cognac and that takes hundreds of years. I thought 2 years was forever!” Damien has a sentient love and connection to the earth. He ploughs certain areas of this dreamscape with his horse Umar. “I cannot bring a cell phone with me….she would get jealous. You have to be present.” Horses require his full attention as does keeping his hands and heart on the pulse of the seasons. For it is mother nature that, in the end, makes the great vintages, like 2010, what they are. “As a team, we are fifteen people for four vineyards. The main thing is to have good people with you. I try to make a good atmosphere. Make it like being at home and understand that you are working for yourself. Be in charge of what you do. It is like a family and everybody understands we have to work hard and when nature decides, you have to be ready. In 2017, there was a total frost that swept across Bordeaux.

Their rosé Auguste is pressed within 3 hours of its harvest. Damien and his crew harvest Gaby, Moya and Du Parc by hand and are thinking of that for Auguste too, which alone is 32 hectares (almost 70 acres). “The soil is the most important thing and the trust of the plants.” He goes from every two weeks to daily tasting of the seeds, “As soon as they are not glued to the body (of the grape), and not bitter, but like a nut, they are perfect!” While we are chatting, Julien Durand appears and shares in a wine tasting. He is the descendent of the original proprietors, the families De Kermoal and De Bouissiron. The original family Bouissiron was here 2000 years, then a British owner Kermoal for two hundred and fifty. Tom is lucky owner number 5. His home away from home, the Château Gaby, was originally a post for people driving their horses for water at the château trough and to stop for lunch. Tom and Vignobles Sullivan wines too can be a part of history with this land and Damien’s care. As the new owner and business maverick, Tom Sullivan, is walking straight into history. According to Tom, a self-made billionaire, wine making is a harder business. “In my business (Lumber Liquidators), I was on the other end. I would come to mills that were producing and they would have leftover stuff that was not popular. Similar to wine, like 3 grades of lumber where the middle grade was selling but the high and low grade were not popular. I would say, ‘Ok, you have 20 trucks, I will pay this.’ Now I see how the mills felt when I dealt with them. It is also harder especially in the US. I’m used to a product I can sell directly to the consumer. Here we have to go through a distributor and retailer, so we are far removed from the end customer plus you have a million people selling wine and spirits - how do you stand out from that? It is a good challenge. I like a challenge.

Newcomers in a region this rarified face competition, Damien explains, “There is always something competitive whenever an owner changes. Mainly with someone from the U.S. or worse yet China. But French buy properties and often change out the team, so the first thing is (we get) to keep the team.” Previous vintages have garnered incredible kudos. Tom jokes “My friends say the broker made one book and gave it to you.” But fact is, a blind tasting of 1,000 wines from 2001-2015 vintages for the area, ranks Petrus (2,300€ a bottle) at #18 and Lafite Rothschild at #5 (850€). Chateau Gaby (160€) comes in at #12 in Bordeaux and at #1 in Fronsac in Le Grand Classement des Vins de Bordeaux - Remy Poussart. Tom is quick to explain, “That’s all Damian, not me.” Damien is breaking new ground with his use of Genodics, playing music to vines. “It will take awhile to change people’s minds. I am very interested about water memory. Sound and vibration to heal and strengthen, reduce stress and to not be impacted by big, chemical companies like Monsanto.” The song Tom and Damien are piping into their terroir is a piano piece put together by physicist Joel Sternheimer, who is also a musician and biologist. “He started with tomatoes in Senegal.” Tom jokes,

Wine “Wine is much more interesting!” After three weeks the tomatoes were thriving and heartier in one part of the field where the music played than where not. Damien extols, “If you live close to a forest, every morning in spring and summer the birds are singing when the sun is starting, helping plants to hold the morning water.”

have North and South facing. South facing is better for colder winters. Northeast facing wasn’t as interesting twenty, thirty years ago. That’s changing.” The weather is changing and that is favoring this terroir. Tom’s vines represent 10 percent of Canon Fronsac within Fronsac (an appellation within the appellation). They have a special selection of good soil and good wine. Damien insists, “There is an importance in terroir, wine quality. The classification of wine in Medoc and St. Emilion which are well-known and historic. When you are young and just making good wines for 25 years, you have to wait a little bit. Everyone is trying to make their best wine here, so marketing and communication will make the difference. We want to be the best of this appellation and area which we can do, but you have to market and communicate.”

Healthy living and cultivating a people and earthfriendly product is high on Tom’s list. His family are all organic, including wife and precious children who were scampering around the gorgeous Château Gaby during the recent primeurs event (an elegant affair Tom hosted in March with a knock out live performance with Robyn Bennett) which gives the wine world a sneak peek at the quality and personality of upcoming vintages. He has been eating organic since age twenty-five and loves food and wine that make you feel good! “France, in wine Time to bring in team member Charley McPherson, making, is more carefully protected and pure.” President - U.S., Vignobles Sullivan. He has the Tom knows what he wants and Damien knows this challenge of getting a great wine into a sexy marketing territory inside and out. “We are all on the hills. We push and onto tables and in restaurants and bars around

the country. “It comes down to differentiation and having a story. The Genodics part of it is compelling because no one else is doing it. I continually come back to nature: the connection of the wine, the land and the human aspect. The wine making practices of Bordeaux are metaphoric for life. You have to take what the earth is giving you, year in year out. You can’t even irrigate, water the fields (as soon as you irrigate, you lose AOC and the ability to call it Bordeaux). The thing that struck me most about Tom and Damien goes right back to nature.”

recover.” Both consider their team their family. The Vignobles Sullivan family know it is time to stop homogenizing. It is time to take these seasons we are seeing become more extreme and work with them. Time to allow them to guide our practices across the fields of architecture, design, landscaping, medicine, horticulture. Damian “knows the exact character of each barrel” made of only French oak. Tom knows the word oak in French from his years of flooring experience and much more. He is a mastermind of knowing a great buy. And his wines are a great buy now with a quality that far exceeds the pricetag. If people are the soil of our lives, then the Vignobles Clearly the passion is present for both Tom and Sullivan terroir is rich indeed. Mother Nature Damien. So what is the dream? “The dream is selling writes a new story every year. This is the story of the bottles for Petrus prices”, Tom laughs, “No...just Tom Sullivan who has the business savvy and drive coming here it is like a dream, you see it and you to take on challenges and Damian Landouar, the know.” They make an unlikely and perfect pair. We grape-whispering steward who brings to fruition will watch this racehorse of vintages peak; if Mother wonderful wines, who speaks to his horses and vines Nature wills it. This team is certainly at the ready to like a lover and friend. Of the times the vines may harvest and share the rewards and the secrets of the need rest saying, “It is a romance, give her a year to soil.

world for those who seek beauty in life. A market for dreamers, investors, and those who appreciate the value of the buying experience just as much as they value the newly made investment of a high end timepiece. As with almost all luxury markets, there are always individuals behind the curtain, cranking the gears and making the connections. One of the top guns of this under-the-radar industry is Arnauld Lapierre. Arnauld is the landing point between luxury timepiece brands, retailers, and consumers. He’s a master of the trade, having worked in the industry of luxury for over 26 years. With evident expertise in all corners of the international market, Arnauld is on the forefront of the new changes and challenges never before seen by the high-end market of luxury timepieces. Jamie Agoglia: How did you become the conduit between brands and buyers? Arnauld Lapierre: The way it works is that usually we get contacted by word of mouth about working in a specific territory. Buyers want to use our services because of our expertise of the market and because of the contacts of clients we have. I’ve always been interested in beauty. Beauty is everywhere - it can be found in art, music, in clothes. For men, watches are one of the only luxury accessories we have. I got my first luxury watch when I was 15. I always wanted to

work in an industry where the beauty is there, and I decided to work with watches. It could have been jewelry or clothes, but I’ve been working with watches for the last 26 years. Why is it that brands don’t sell directly to retailers? Most of the time, brands cannot be sold everywhere, so they count on us to get local distributors to represent their interest. We are the answer to when a brand wants to develop internationally and they first need support locally. How is business? Watches have been getting tougher because of why and how people are buying them. Watches are a more recent invention, historically. Jewelry has been around for a long time, back to ancient egypt and beyond. Wristwatches only started to become popular during the 20th century, before that it was pocket watches and we don’t know what’s next. Everyone uses their phone for the times now, so we’re really seeing an evolution of how we access time. But timepieces are a luxury jewelry that men can wear, so the purpose of why people are buying these high-end watches is definitely shifting from buying out of necessity to tell time to buying it as a luxury piece to own and invest with. So the purpose of it is really shifting and that affects the market today.

Mr. Christophe Claret

A Passion For Time Written by Dane Kennedy

M

r. Christophe Claret creates some of the finest timepieces on the planet. Currently creating 100 per year with sights set on 500 annually within the next five years, Mr. Claret’s passion is found withinin each magnificent work of timepiece art he creates. Just so, Christophe Claret is an artist and those fortunate to wear these magnificent timepieces understand that powerful and surreal craftsmanship of a Christophe Claret timepiece.

Dane Kennedy: When did you passion for watchmaking begin?

9696

Christophe Claret: My passion started as I was 12 years old. At the age of 14, my parents took me to visit a watch restorer’s workshop. This encounter proved to be a life-changing experience. Passionately interested in all things mechanical, I seized the opportunity to ask the craftsman if he would let me come and help him every Friday afternoon after school. The idea appealed to the watchmaker, who agreed. Every week from then on, I would work on taking apart watch mechanisms to clean them, maintain them or to restore to the original shape to the various holes deformed by the incessant motion of the component arbors. In parallel, I engaged in other activities including working on the mechanics of motorcycles or mopeds. I purchased various two-wheelers which I would take part to overhaul the engine, repair them and then put them back together again. At one point, the workshop was transformed into a full-fledged garage, since I was working on seven vehicles at once. What design elements and features set Christophe Claret Timepieces apart from other luxury brands?

We have 4 collections for 4 different universes. The Complicated Traditional Watches, The Complicated Gaming Watches, The Complicated Extreme Watches and The Complicated Feminine Watches. In all these collections, there are timepieces extremely innovative, technical and aesthetic. Where do you find inspiration for the intricacies of you designs? My inspiration is not about watchmaking. It comes from nature, automobile, magic, mechanics, aerospace, antiquity. How has the market for Christophe Claret changed over the years? We created the Christophe Claret brand in 2009, that it to say 10 years ago. It never stops progressing. However this progression is about 15%, because we do with the means we have as we are an independent brand. What do you expect to change in the years to come? I clearly have the ambition to develop the brand. Today, we produce only about 100 watches a year. We want to produce 500 watches a year within 5 years.

Entrepreneaur

What is your favorite piece you’ve created and why? It would be very difficult for me to choose which is my favorite because I invest myself in all of my creations, in all designs and in all components of each watch. It is like asking me which of my children I prefer! Do you see a higher demand in womens or mens watches? Why? The Women universe represents about 15% of our sales. These timepieces are extremely complicated such as the Margot watch. Margot is the most complicated women watches of the world with 730 components. In the Men universe, we have three different collections with a strong attraction of them. Our best sellers are the X-Trem-1, the Maestro, the Soprano and the Poker. We appeal to a wide variety of collectors with our wide variety of watches. What are you currently working on? Today, we are working on a limited edition in partnership with a boxing champion Vasyl Lomachenko. The Loma watch is a mono-pusher chronograph with striking mechanism and constant force escapement.

Via intense passion, creativity, genius, innovative entrepreneurial approach and foresight, Gaspard is forging a path in the world of personalized luxury jewelry that is unprecedented. Constantly keeping an eye on all aspects of the industry and a commitment to passion being the clue of success is at the heart of AKILLIS’ success.

98

Dane Kennedy: When did your love for gemstones begin? Caroline Gaspard: It is above all a passion that came from my Mother who has always had a certain affinity with precious stones. A friend of my father was a diamond seller and would often bring pretty stones to show us. It was like a game to know what we could make from them, bracelets, rings or necklaces. At the age of 15, I started drawing and making jewelry for my family and friends, I had so many requests that I naturally decided to keep going on the adventure. I started from the observation that there were only fashion accessories or more classic jewelery. Following several refusals to personalize jewelry from some major jewelery houses, I wanted to create my own brand where each customer can ask for exactly what they want. Above all, she had to be rock and edgy to get away from classic floral designs or other hearts and animals, but mainly appeal to men and women alike What does the brands name “AKILLIS” mean? I have always been fascinated by mythology. I choose to use the name of the most rock character from greek mythology, Achilles, which is Achilléa in Greek. I also named my son Achille. According to the legend he will

be a rock and rebel hero of the playground [laughs]. In a way, jewels and diamonds are the Achilles heel of women. What lessons you have learned from creating a luxury brand and building a company from the ground up? You have to be passionate. You have to work hard and have an eye on everything. I am quite a control freak. Have a guideline and stick to it, in order to create a real brand DNA. I am intractable with the quality of our jewelry and especially on the Made In France. How do you balance your passion for jewelery with the intensity of running a high-end company? I work with passion, it is the clue of success. When you are loving what you are doing everyday, we don’t see the time passing and work becames a real pleasure. Your collections are unique, daring, and beautiful. Where do you find inspiration for the collections? When I create new pieces or collection, I try to project myself through it and imagine myself wearing it. If something doesn’t speak to me, I simply abandon

the project. When I see a stone I know immediately how to mount it. Today the clientele tends towards the new generations who aspire to new rock designs. Being part of this clientele, I wanted to create AKILLIS to precisely satisfy this demand and obviously stick to my vision and my expectations of fine jewelry. Tell me about the workshops where the pieces are created. I set out to establish our own workshops. Based in France, they bring traditional jewelery-making techniques to life, using a dedicated foundry and melting furnace for each type of alloy where jewelery polishers and setters use the finest materials including gold, platinum, diamonds and precious stones. Driven by the love of accomplishing exquisite work, the workshops can handle any challenge presented. From creating a seamlessly smooth and rounded hollow bullet, to modeling the perfect skin-grazing gem earrings for the Cruella range, titanium shapes Capture Me bracelets and even breathing shimmering new life into the image of python scales with a graphic, edgy and a truly contemporary style. This unbridled inventiveness is communicated through the French artisan craft of high jewellery. Each piece is made in AKILLIS’ workshop, by an artisan using stones that have been meticulously selected by the house’s very own gemologists.

King Calaway

No Matter What Written by Jamie Agoglia Photography by Rachel Deeb and Alex Ferarri

K

ing Calaway is the breakout country group heard across the world. With six group members from three different countries, King Calaway has organically and seamlessly blended together their diverse backgrounds to create their smooth, soulful, country sound. The group is composed of 6 multi-talented musicians, Caleb Miller, Chris Deaton, Simon Dumas, Jordan Harvey, Chad Michael Jervis, and Austin Luther who all pursued solo careers before coming together in Nashville to create the dynamic and fresh sound that is uniquely King Calaway.

110

Jamie Agoglia: How did you all come together in Nashville? Simon: We all had mutual friends who brought us together. I was studying in England, and a guy I knew also knew Jordan, who had moved to Nashville, and he recommended I got out to Nashville and meet up with Jordan and play music with him. At the time, Jordan and Chris already knew each other and were already hanging out and jamming, and it was a pretty similar situation. We we’re all brought together by mutual friends. What was was it like when you all played together for the first time? Jordan: I think straight away when we got into a band room together, all six of us, we played “Love The One You’re With”, which is on our self titled EP, and once we had played that song I think we could feel the chemistry and the energy between us as a group and I feel like “Love The One You’re With” really became the blueprint for the King Calaway sound. Part of your mission is to bring authenticity back to country music. Being that you’re from three different countries with six different stories and backgrounds, what has it been like to blend that diversity into your organic and unique sound? Chad: I think that even though we all come from very remote and different places throughout the world, all of us grew up with a love and passion for music and a desire to be in a band. I think we definitely found that within each of us, each of us has such a passion for all genres of music. The reason why we all gathered towards Nashville is because we wanted to be a part of country music and create our own lane within it. There is so much change happening right now in country music and we wanted to be a part of that. When we went to the studio, we played the EP live and did all the instruments and vocals live, so the fresh, organic sound that you’re hearing is because it’s all coming from a live band. And that’s something we wanted to have in our sound as King Calaway and I think that’s something we have been able to accomplish.

What does King Calaway mean? Chris: I used to wash tour busses for a living while was still trying to make music work. Somebody there had the last name of Calaway, it’s not that glamorous or heroic of a story but it’s the truth [laughs]. We had been testing out different names and we came up with the idea of King Calaway forward, and we all liked that. Since were from three different countries, we also wanted a name that sounded the same when said in any of our accent and we all pronounce King Calaway the same regardless of who says it. How did you overcome the hardships that come with creating a band, which you’ve done with great success? Caleb: Whenever starting something new, theres always roadblocks. What helps with getting through those hard times is knowing that there is nothing else that you would rather do, ever. There were so many times when I was trying to make a career in music and when it never felt like it was working, I thought about my options, maybe try another profession, but truly there is nothing we would rather be doing, regardless of the hardships. It’s more than wanting to be in music, it’s a need to create and bring people together through the power of music, and that is always a drive for us, individually and collectively. How does have three lead singers influence the dynamic of King Calaway? Simon: It’s a cool thing we’ve got going on, because unlike most bands, the three lead singers are by no means the three leaders. Every each instrument, including vocals, is treated equally. We’re all instrumentalists, so we approach the band with that, and then using our voices we tell the story. We split it up in a way that gives everybody a chance to share their story of the song. How was the experience of performing at The Grand Ole Opry. Caleb; It was one of the most surreal moments of our lives. When we first walked on stage,

111

Entertainment

Brad Paisley introduces us, and then he looks at us and says, “I hope you guys wore your diapers today, ‘cause you’re about to crap your pants.” And that’s really how I was feeling [laughs], so nervous and so excited. We just looked out into the crowd and it was all family and friends cheering us on, it was a great feeling. What can we expect for the rest of 2019 and beyond?

112

Austin: We’re doing some promos in Australia and cameo appearance on a show called, “Neighbours”, which is huge in the UK. After that, we have a few CMA Fest performances, one of which is at the Ascend Amphitheater. That performance is going to be ridiculous; it’s a huge venue that we’re all really excited about. We’ll be performing at the Grand Oprey again, and we have our album coming out in the fall, so there’s a lot of great things coming this year. What message do you hope to spread through your music? Simon: Our music is very positive and that’s something we want on the forefront. We recently opened for Garth Brooks, and one of the biggest compliments we got after the show was people just coming up to us and telling us, ‘you guys just look like you’re having so much fun on stage”. We just want the lyrics, the music, and our performance to translate that positivity and really have it shine through what we’re doing. We also want to spread the message that music can be whatever you want it to be, there are no rules.

he all-new Princess Y85 will make her Global launch at boot Düsseldorf 2019, alongside the release of the latest developments for the forthcoming X95, scheduled for launch in 2020. Following the success of the R35, these two masterpieces are the result of the collaboration between Princess and Pininfarina, aimed at redefining the Princess design language through raised levels of perceived quality particular to exterior space. The scope of this broad project, resulting from the partnership between Princess Yachts, British luxury motor yacht manufacturer, Olesinski, design and naval architecture studio, and Pininfarina, iconic Italian design house, is re-writing the rules of yacht design, setting a new standard of layout excellence. “With the X95 and the Y85 we wanted to challenge the norm by realizing a practical yet beautiful design approach that is easily perceived as both Princess and Pininfarina” explains Paolo Pininfarina, Chairman of the Group. “The approach was simply to offer more to the customer in both form and function.”

Indeed, the distinctive element of the X95 is represented by the ‘Super Flybridge’, a unique concept that offers substantially more outdoor space and approximately 40% more interior space than a traditional motor yacht. This leap forward in capacity and versatility mirrors recent innovations from luxury automotive brands who have developed SUV and crossover models to meet these customer expectations. The Y85 incorporates onboard life comparable to much larger craft with expansive and comfortable social spaces, a full-beam owners stateroom, clever galley configuration that offers guests privacy, and its flybridge is an irresistible invitation to al fresco entertainment. The presentation of these two innovative yachts at boot Düsseldorf provides the possibility to appreciate this new design language and partnership between Pininfarina and Princess.

Zach Skow Marley’s Mutts Written by Jamie Agoglia

Z 122

ach Skow is the ultimate example of taking the darkest of situations turning them into a bright flame, changing the path for all in its light. When Zach’s organs began to fail at the age of 28, it was his rescue dog, Marley, who pulled him from the depths of his hardship and taught him a new way to live. Zach believes in the healing power of connecting with animals and has found that through utilizing the loving nature of dogs as a tool for therapy, that positive change can be ignited even in the coldest of circumstances. From inmates to addicts, disabled children to people with depression, animals have the ability to open a door to communication, connection, and understanding. That is his mission at Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue in California. Jamie Agoglia: How did Marley’s Mutts start? Zach Skow: I started working with the Humane Society locally in 2004. During that time, I drank and drugged myself into liver failure at 28 years old in 2008, and I was essentially dying. I had less than 90 days to live without getting a liver transplant and I knew I wasn’t going to get it because I was an alcoholic. So I spent 6 weeks in the hospital, got transferred to another hospital, and then was released pretty much on the basis of “we’re going to send you home, try to stay alive for 6 months so that you’ll qualify

for a transplant. That’s your goal.” And I had never lived sober in my life. So there were a lot of really, really big challenges there. One being suicide, and then all of the things I was going through physically; everything that comes with being extremely, extremely ill. It was just a very tenuous, very deadly scenario. When I got out of the hospital, I started walking my rescue dog, Marley, just kind of putting one foot in front of the other and trying to find any connection to the moment. Marley really helped me with that, and helped me learn to tolerate life on life’s terms. I was terrible at being me. I didn’t know how to be alive without alcohol or drugs; it was a huge challenge. Marley really showed me the way. I had him with me at all timse. We started bringing more dogs into our pack, fostering them, started writing up stories about them and taking pictures in efforts of getting them adopted, eventually taking them on group walks once I started to heal up. And I really was making progress quickly. That set the tempo for the rest of my life. By the time I was six months sober and qualified for the transplant, I no longer needed it. My body was healing itself. I had also fostered about 40 dogs and found them all homes during that time, and Marley’s Mutts was really born out of that. From there it just never stopped, we kept fostering and volunteering at more shelters. We started Marley’s Mutts in 2009 and in 2010, we became a non-profit organization. It just keeps going, it all kept organically growing from that. It saved my life.

How would you describe the mission behind Marley’s Mutts? The mission of the organization as a whole is several things. Our mission is to help the world become “no kill.” In other words, to live in a world where animals are honored and where we don’t have to euthanize them because of space or behavioral problems. On a grander level, our feeling is that dogs are medicine, and were trying to bring that medicine to the lives of people who need it. One of our statements is “rescue dogs rescuing people.” We basically focus on rescuing vulnerable, at-risk dogs from high-kill shelters and giving them another chance at life and we do that through a variety of programs. What kinds of programs do you run? We have a transport program, we have a really robust spay and neuter program, and we have a really big education and therapy program called Miracle Mutts. Miracle Mutts is a couple dozen therapy dogs that we’ve certified over the years that travel to different non-profit organizations all over Los Angeles county. Going to veterans homes, facilities for austitic youth or mentally and physically handicapped youth, foster youth, and really anywhere that dogs can make a difference. Tell me about the Pawstive Change program, which integrates animal therapy into the California prison system and how it started. A person I know got out of prison after serving 13 years, and his mother reached out to me to set him with a dog I was fostering at the time that had been shot. He and his mom came up to my house and he was like a feral human being, having been locked up for 13 years. He was a little bit younger than me, I was 33 and he was 30 and he just became like a little brother to me. We ended up adopting Shadow to him and what that dog was able to do for him really revolutionized how he approached life. Having Shadow really helped him face some social difficulties that come with being locked up for so long. He was very uncomfortable talking to people, wouldn’t make eye contact. By having Shadow with him, it encouraged him to engage with people and connect with people, and it really started bringing the best out of him because that’s what animals do. He ended up getting hired at an animal shelter in Oklahoma. And we saw the powerful and positive impact that Shadow made on his life, and we started to brainstorm on that. We tried to start a program at our local jail and a couple other places but kept hitting roadblocks, and we had no idea what we were doing either. Three and a half years ago we finally got a program

started at California City Correctional Facility after they reached out to us. We run our Pawsitive Change program differently that how other similar types of programs do it. It’s an immersive program, an extensive curriculum with a lot of presentations, and it’s essentially 13 hours a day of training. We have our whole training staff in there once a week with them- it’s very hands on. It initiates positive interaction between inmates and between races, which is extremely unique for a high-securiy prisone environment. Each element of the program hasempathy and honesty building components. It builds trust, builds connections, and gives these guys something that makes

them smile again. You should see it, they headway into their own emotional identities and just bloom. They’ve been repressed for so long, so for them to find their voice is really a beautiful thing. What have you learned about human connection through the years of doing this life changing work? I’ve learned that there is more potential inside of the United States penal system that probably anywhere else in the world. We have three million locked up men, women, and children in the U.S., and those people are devoid of any real, meaningful connections. What

I’ve learned is the importance of helping people make those connections, and the importance of helping them know themselves and tap into their potential. I’ve also learned that we need to readdress what we view as normal when it comes to animals and pets. Life is a struggle, and all of us go through different hardships. At first glance, both people can overlook an animal who has been through rough times, just like how we can overlook a person who’s in a hard place. We need to take a close look and redefine the preconceived notions of “normal” and “happy” to be more inclusive of animals (and people) who don’t fit the current standard.

aising a glass (or a shot) of Casamigos Tequila to their close and longstanding friendship, the Swiss watchmaker OMEGA and fastest growing spirits company Casamigos Tequila and Mezcal, have proudly teamed up to launch a brand-new timepiece for customers in the United States of America. The new Seamaster Planet Ocean “Deep Black” Casamigos is a tribute to the company founded by longtime friends George Clooney, Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman. Both George Clooney and Rande Gerber have special relationships with OMEGA stretching back over many years. While George is one of OMEGA’s most well-known and visible brand ambassadors, Rande has established his own connection through his wife Cindy Crawford, an OMEGA ambassador since 1995, and his children Kaia and Presley, who joined the brand in 2017. Speaking about the new watch release, Raynald Aeschlimann, President and CEO of OMEGA said, “George and Rande are a special part of the OMEGA family and we’ve always been inspired by the creativity and premium quality of their Casamigos Tequila and Mezcal products. We wanted to do something special that celebrated our ‘Deep Black” design as well as the look of their world-renowned Casamigos Tequila and Mezcal.” For Casamigos Tequila and Mezcal cofounder Rande Gerber, who took a very hands-on approach to the project, the respect is clearly mutual: “Design is very personal to me. When I designed the Casamigos Mezcal bottle the key was to create something unique that I want to have on my bar. We used the same philosophy for our OMEGA collaboration, we worked closely to design something that was true to us and that we want to wear.”

A combination of a GMT model and diving watch, the new “Deep Black Casamigos features a 45.5 mm case crafted from black ceramic, which has been finished in a unique matte texture inspired by the newly-launched Casamigos Mezcal. On the matte black ceramic dial, the wording is highlighted in the exact shade of teal as the trademarked Casamigos Tequila and Mezcal agave logo: a color also used on the tips of two of the four hands. Turning the watch over reveals a sapphire crystal caseback, which has been specially treated to resemble the dark glass of the Casamigos Mezcal bottle. It is also lacquered with a white Casamigos Mezcal logo and Limited-Edition number. The black rubber strap has stitching in black while on the inside, the watch is driven by the incredibly precise OMEGA Master Chronometer calibre 8906. OMEGA’s Seamaster Planet Ocean “Deep Black” Casamigos is limited to just 80 pieces and can only be purchased from OMEGA Boutiques in the USA at a retail price of USD $11,600 + tax.

Seth Burgett & Gateway Bronco

Ultimate Barn Finds Written by Jamie Agoglia

134

Automotive

S

eth Burgett is the entrepreneurial mastermind behind Gateway Bronco, the unique Barn Find Specialists who restore vintage original paint Ford Broncos, and there is no one out there doing it quite like them. Taking a staple of American automotive history and combining 21st technology and advancments, Gateway Bronco is pathing a frontier for the unique niche within a booming market. With specific dedication to each Bronco they encounter, Gateway Bronco takes pride in their connection to each Bronco, it’s owner, and their story.

Jamie Agoglia: You’re Barn Find Specialists, what does it mean to the average person? Seth Burgett: To the average person, being Barn Find Specialists means that we are uniquely able to find original paint barn found Broncos located throughout the United States, in rare and unusual places, and consistently in exceptional condition. One that we’ve got coming up in the next couple months is coming from an original owner who has a very rare color, not only is it rare but its original paint. He’s owned it since new with all the documentation, and he called me first. So we now have the ability to pick it up and here the whole story. So that’s the kind of thing were able to find pretty consistently. Truly exception condition, untouched, rust free vehicles that we can then begin a great, great restoration around.

How did find this unique treasure hunt? I’ve been doing this since I was a young child. My grandfather lived in a 200 person town, he was a farmer, and right across the street in town there was the barn. At age 9 or 10, I was doing a little search of the barn and I actually found an old Hudson and an old Corvair. That was the start. For us, it’s exploring, it’s an adventure, it’s “I can’t wait to see what it’s like inside, see what in the glovebox.” How do you find Broncos that are consistently in such prime condition? Part of that is our secret sauce, it’s part of our trade secret of how were able to do this so consistently. But in part now that we have a reputation for what we do, people are bringing their original paint Broncos to us. They give us a phone call or email and many time they’re coming to us because they know we pay market value for the vehicles and we treat people right when they bring us some that special to them. What has been the ultimate Barn Find? The ultimate barn find came to u from texas, and it is the first bronco. It’s a prototype Bronco that was the first Bronco built by Ford. It was owned by Carroll Shelby for 10 years, and it was in immaculate condition, just beautiful. It’s a true prototype which Ford produced all their original photographs and documentation for. We’re compiling the legacy of the First Bronco at www. FirstBronco.com. Why are Broncos what you decided to go after? Well, Broncos are a really unique vehicles. They’re iconic american vehicles that are unique to any other vehicle in the world because they went from 1966-1977 without being changed. There’s no other vehicle in the world that has gone so long without any changes. If you look at the Mustang, it was the same for 2 years then was heavily changed, Camero, the Covervett, pretty much every vehicle you can think of goes through a major overhaul every 2 years. For us, that is part of the uniqueness of the Bronco, and also its exceptional design which has resulted in a cult following. They’re just a great vehicle that perfect match our capabilities. Honestly, I was going to invest in 60’s era Shelby’s, and this is by far a better investment.

135

Automotive

Why is it a better investment that other models? The growth in value of the 60’s era Shelby’s flatlined. The growth in value of the Bronco over the last 5 years has outperformed the DOW, NASDAQ, S&P, gold, and is performing exceptionally well outsizing any of these areas of investment. So that’s why after selling a company I decided to invest in Broncos. From here, I predict we have 10 years of nonlinear growth ahead of us. I believe that the Broncos that people were selling just 5 years ago for $6,000 are going to be $100,000+ vehicles in the next 10 years. And we’re already seeing it. I invested in 15 all original paint Broncos in 2016 and all of those Broncos have by far more than doubled in value. Tell me about the unique Gateway Bronco assembly line workshop where these beautiful creations are made.

136

We get to add quality controls to them that you really can’t provide in a traditional restoration shop. We consider our environment a modern manufacturing center. It is a factory, it’s a factory-like setting. We’re able to put the quality controls in place that then ensure our client that everything is impeccable. We’ve literally had people who’ve left for road trips the same day it arrives in their driveway. They are completely ready to go. In your market space, do you see yourself as a direct competitor to those that are doing similar work, restoring other vehicle models? Or are you on your own island, so to speak? There will always going to be competitors in space like ours, but something that we’re doing that no one else that I know of does is uphold a 5 year warranty and I think that part of the uniqueness we have. If someone is looking for a Bronco, we are one of the top if not the top choice for Broncos consistently. Secondly, if someone is looking for a vintage SUV of any brand we tend to come right to the top because its vintage enhanced, modernized. We’ve got back up cameras, car play, power windows that look like vintage windows, were using genuine Porsche leather. There aren’t any others out there that are using genuine Porsche, Bentley, or Mercedez leather in their vehicles.

Game Changing Civilian Aviation Written by Dane Kennedy Photography by Tropic Ocean Airways

R

ob Ceravalo has been chasing a dream throughout his life, bringing it to life with passion, commitment, guts, and pure entrepreneurial genius. Following childhood dreams, a successful career as a pilot with the Navy, to Richard Branson’s written inspiration, Ceravalo is living the dream that he brought to life. He Finding a way by loving what he does. Dane Kennedy: When did your passion for aviation begin?

140

Rob Ceravolo: My father was an Italian immigrant who came to the United States in his early 20’s. He was a teenager in southern Italy during World War II, and the American military liberated his town from the fascists and Nazis. He always remembered the U.S. bombers and fighters flying low over his mountaintop town and he fell in love with the U.S .and aviation. Some of my earliest memories are spending time with him at the airport or sitting on a cushion in a small plane so I could see over the dashboard and take the controls. His influence is the reason Tropic Ocean Airways exists How did your time in the Navy influence the creation of Tropic Ocean Airways? There are many misconceptions with military leadership style and the job description as a fighter pilot. The military leadership style has nothing to do with barking orders. It is about developing an effective team utilizing core values of honor, commitment, courage, mission completion, discipline, compassion and the ability to look at yourself and your team objectively and without emotion so you can develop a pattern of constant improvement. Leadership is influence as well. The best leaders are able to lead from the front because their team has faith in the mission, not because they are just following orders. Additionally, military aviation is about training and development. It’s taking something high-risk, like landing on an aircraft carrier at night, and making it routine through ongoing training, development and standardizing how to approach the mission. Applying that development concept to civilian aviation is a game changer.

Aviation

Aviation

Aviation

Where did the concept behind Tropic Ocean Airways come from?

environment. We talk about this all day, every day. Everyone is a “safety officer.”

I had two dreams when I was a kid: fly fighter jets for the Navy and someday start an aviation company. I planned to do the latter when I retired from the Navy, and then in late 2009, I was reading Screw It Let’s Do It by Richard Branson while on leave in southern Italy. I decided on that trip to start my company as soon as my 10-year active duty commitment was up. I focused on creating a seaplane company because I believed amphibious (land and water) seaplane service would be a game changer for congested, difficultto-reach and remote areas.

Professionalism and compassion are also of heavy importance. Representing the company well and expressing compassion for fellow staff, guests and our communities.

Were seaplanes always a passion of yours? I grew up in South Florida, so I loved the water in addition to aviation. I decided to fly for the Navy instead of the Air Force because I loved the idea of combining aviation with the ocean. Seaplanes were the logical next step for me. The idea of seaplane flying for me is “freedom.” What I mean is, you can be flying along and see a nice little harbor and say, “Let’s land there and go snorkeling.” It is so different than regular aviation and gives you that freedom and access to places that are normally out of reach. What does it take to build an airline that redefines the aviation industry? Persistence, perseverance, a great team and an unwavering faith in your mission. We have overcome so many obstacles since our founding in 2009. I sold everything I had, including my house and car, in order to get this company off the ground. Everyone said I was crazy to start an airline company at the end of a recession, but we found the right partners and persevered. The examples of us overcoming obstacles are so numerous I would need a day to tell the stories. There is a reason we have the core value of “Find A Way!” What are some of the core values of Tropic Ocean Airways? Our core values are: Safe is Right, Be Professional, Be Compassionate, Find a Way, Mutual Support, Love What You Do and Lead. Tropic Ocean Airways is about constantly debriefing everything we do to ensure we are evolving our operation (through training, standardization, etc.) with the ever-changing

Finding a way to get the job done goes hand-inhand with leadership – everyone regardless of rank or position can do it! This creates mutual support so the entire team succeeds. And something to be applied to every part of life, love what you do. Bottom line is you embrace all of the difficult things that you encounter on a daily basis because they’re just part of the overall wonderful experience that is living. You can’t always do what you love, but you can always find a way to love what you do! What should passengers expect when flying with you? We don’t have passengers, we have guests! Our guests can expect safety, reliability, professionalism and compassion while having a truly luxurious and enjoyable experience. All our employees, regardless of position, work together to create the fun and personal experience that is traveling with Tropic Ocean Airways. With such unique accomplishments, what are your eyes set on next? We do what we do very well. In 2018, we flew 35,000 guests in five countries while maintaining five-star reviews. We have worked hard to create an operation and experience that is unmatched, and we are working with several governments to apply what we’ve learned to develop similar operations in new regions. Point-to-point, direct, amphibious service combined with our ability to train and develop people from the ground up can be a game changer in regions that struggle with reliable and guest-focused air transportation. It opens up opportunities for the development of high-end, low-impact resorts, enhancing the visitor’s experience while creating jobs. What are some words you live by? If you fail, you are not a failure; if you succeed, you are not a success. You are an entrepreneur – every day is a new opportunity to grind and get after it. .

Entre Cielos

An Adventurers Dream

luxury explorer’s dream - sailing through the crystal blue waters of the Greek Isles aboard the two-masted, wooden sailing yacht, Entre Cielos. Cecil Adams is the owner and mastermind behind the luxury hospitality empire which includes the Entre Cielos Hotel in Mendoza, and now the Entre Cielos sailing yacht, adorned for cruising the Mediterranean Sea with stylish lodging.

146

Born and raised in Norway, Cecil grew up on the open sea sailing with her father and going on adventures with her family. Though she herself never learned the art of sailing, growing up with a love for the endless possibilities of the ocean, her passion led her to becoming the owner of a major and unique family asset the 30 meter long, double-masted wooden sailing gulet. Adams has integrated creative lodging experiences, accommodations, and international expansion into the market of luxury travel stemming from the original vision and essence of the Entre Cielos Hotel in Mendoza. Adams has created an adventurous dream. “Mendoza is a once in a lifetime experience for Americans, and Greece is very well known and people flock there, while what we have done is combined the adventure of travel and exploring with the ability to do so on your own luxury yacht, so to speak, where you choose your captain, choose where you want to go, and have all these endless possibilities right at your fingertips. On-board chefs, water sports, a full library, 12 sun beds; this experience is truly unlike anything else in the market.” Entre Cielos was originally a gulet in Turkey, one of many as gulets are a Turkish craft, but migrated to Greece’s stable tourism market where they are the unique, luxury gulet of the Greek Isles. Beautifully crafted from the finest wood, every inch of it’s space is designed for relaxation, entertainment, and unparalleled luxury. Averaging at €30,000 per week, it’s an unsurpassable experience that many merely dream of. “What I really love about this gulet is that everything is made of wood. It huge with a lot of space, and it is very wide because it is very stable, room to walk and move without ever feeling unstable. I love all the seating possibilities; you can sit at a huge table with ten people on the open sea, and experience all that comes with the beautiful, blue, open water, without ever feeling a moment of instability or worry.” An adventurous dream, to say the least.

Chasing The Lights Into Integrity & Authenticity Written by Dane Kennedy Photography by Alejandro Douek

peaking with Maria Sten is a unique opportunity. She’s an enigma, so to speak. Crossing so many beautiful artistic elements in life and now being front and center in the ever-exploding world of TV and cinema surrounding the DC, Marvel et al world, she’s finding her space. Elevating her creativity to extreme new levels, and on the verge of becoming one of the next big names in that fantastic land known as Hollywood. Dane Kennedy: From acting to dancing to modeling, which form of expression started your performance career? Maria Sten: That is a good question. I think dancing was the first way into the creative arts. I worked as a professional dance for 9 years before I started to go into acting. I always new I wanted to do something different and wanted to be in LA...and I did, and then realized this is what I wanted to do with my life. I love acting, I enjoy it so much. What challenges have you learned from throughout your career that you have found the most impactful or meaningful? Being an actor. As an actor you’re faced with so much rejection. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. I think a lot of people become disillusioned...I think for me, settling into the journey of taking on that challenge of what it means to be an actor in LA, was really a test for me, to see how bad do I

really want this. Is there anything else that I could do with my life that I could do that could make me happier? No, this is what I truly love, telling stories is my passion. There’s some sort of a freedom in that. You then find people in LA that are like that and are your tribe. Tribe of people on the other side. Actor, writer, producer, dancer, the list of your talents goes on and on, how do you balance all of your creative endeavors without losing momentum in either one or in general? There’s a lot of coffee involved [laughs]. Right now I’m spending my time between acting and writing primarily. I try to keep my focus on my acting and writing. As an actress you get all kinds of roles thrown at you at all times...and that’s why I love acting so much, is that you never have to put away any of the other things that you love. Congratulations on your upcoming role in “Swamp Thing!” How do you feel about it, what are your anticipations for it? I am so excited to see how the fans are going to receive it. So far the responses have been beyond wonderful. It’s been an exceptional experience, it’s such an amazing ensemble cast. It’s exciting to see DC getting their

prime footprint in the television space. It lives in own world in the DC realm. It is very much a horror show. James Wan and his company, they are great producers over there. That’s what makes “Swamp Thing” so special. This entire experience has been so wonderful and exciting. Getting to play Liz Tremayne whose in the comic and make her my own; now she is me. It’s a huge responsibility to take on and I hope to give the fans what they’re looking for. Because you have these incredibly beyond committed fans living in those DC, etc. worlds must be an added challenge, you need to create and have the responsibility to bring to life what this fan base expects and anticipate. Yes, very much so. I also think it goes beyond what is on the page and it’s about taking the life and what this character represents and bringing that to life. So that when the fans see her, Liz Tremayne, who is a badass...it is definitely a huge responsibilty to take that on and do it justice. People putting their heart and soul into creating these characters. How can I give her something of myself and come to life off the page. It’s a wild world out there. Everybody wants to make things and at the end of the day it comes down to doing it with authenticity and integrity, and put your ego inside and show up and be of service.

Karl Wolf Triumphantly Biting the Bullet

Written by Stephanie Tilley Photography by Jonas Mekonnen

arl Wolf, a Lebanese Pop, R&B, Soul and Fusion musician based out of Toronto, and is quickly becoming one of Canada’s leading music sensations. Talent, determination, persistence are key to what makes Karl Wolf’s musical entrepreneurship such a success. Wolf has been triumphantly singing, producing, and writing all of his own music since the start of his career in 2001. “Well initially when I was starting out, no one wanted to work with me. So, I took it upon myself to learn how to write my own music, produce my own songs, as well as perform them. I wanted to make a name for myself so I really put in the work,” says Wolf, currently spending some time in Montreal after just wrapping up a tour through Canada and overseas. In the beginning, his odds were stacked against him as he struggled to get his foot in the door of the music industry. “I think it is really important to know everything you possibly can in order to be successful in music. I have definitely become accustomed to my busy lifestyle, but I am really disciplined when it comes to balancing work and fun,” he says, and his dedication to his passions were more than apparent as he released his first solo album in 2006, “Face Behind the Face”. He continued to release three more albums, “Bite the Bullet” in 2006, “Nightlife” in 2009, and “Finally Free” in 2012. Currently his main focus is promoting his newest single, “Yes,” the first known multilingual reggaeton single. “Super Sapo, Deena, Fito Blanco, and I were able to collaborate on something really special,” Wolf continues, “I have a few friends out there that were able to hook it up with yachts and private jets and essentially everything that we needed to make this killer video, so of course I was like, Yes! Let’s do this!” With over 100,000 streams on Spotify and over 250,000 views on YouTube, he is making his goals a reality and his struggles are long behind him.

Life is better at the ranch

Rancho San Lucas Written by Brian McCallen

T

he most anticipated new private resort community in Los Cabos, Rancho San Lucas is a masterplanned development set in rolling desert foothills that slope to 1.2 miles of pristine beachfront on the Pacific Ocean. Located only 15 minutes from downtown Cabo San Lucas, a deep-sea fishing and nightlife capital, this exclusive, gated enclave occupies a privileged location that offers a level of serenity rarely found in Cabo. A new highway cut through the mountains has reduced the drive time to 30 minutes for FBO arrivals at Los Cabos International Airport (SJD).

182

The Solmar Group, an award-winning hospitality company in Los Cabos, has assumed the role of environmental steward at its first master-planned residential development. Residents and visitors alike are the beneficiaries of the company’s sustainable, eco-friendly

initiatives. Of the development’s total of 834 acres, 106 acres have been preserved and left untouched. An additional 186 acres is dedicated to the resort’s centerpiece, a signature Greg Normandesigned golf course. Known for employing a ‘least-disturbance’ approach in his design projects, Norman has created a multi-themed layout that features sweeping ocean views from every hole. The site’s contours and topography, he enthused, are ideal for the routing of a world-class course. Spanning three different ecosystems, the 7,260-yard, par-72 course descends to enormous windswept dunes at the start, climbs through a thick cactus forest creased by meandering arroyos in the middle of the round, and returns players to the beach and sea on the back nine. A fall 2019 opening is anticipated.

Jetset Travel

With two fully hosted comfort stations spaced around the course, players will enjoy an allinclusive experience during the round. A handsome ranchero-style clubhouse, featuring an indoor-outdoor restaurant and event lawn, overlooks the fairways and sea. Rancho San Lucas is a private club with exclusive access available to home- owners and guests of Solmar Group hotels, including the new on-site Grand Solmar Rancho San Lucas Hotel & Resort. There are three real estate options at this landmark development, a low-density community that is poised to redefine the coastal living experience in Cabo. The Villas at Rancho San Lucas, occupying a bluff at the development’s highest vantage point and totaling 134 homes, offer panoramic views of the ocean, fairways and desert. The Villas feature updated Mexican-Spanish architecture, with earth-toned stucco walls, clay barrel roofs, arched entryways, and cantera stone finishes and ironwork trims. Five different floor plans are available. The use of top-quality materials, coupled with

great attention to detail, create an ambience of natural elegance. The Norman Estates, the most exclusive address within Rancho San Lucas, features 32 single-level, luxury estate homes and 36 luxury condominiums, all with panoramic views of the Pacific and a trio of seaside golf holes. The hacienda-style homes at Norman Estates reflect a “Baja Chic” design ethos, with expansive indoor-outdoor living spaces that blend seamlessly into the oceanfront setting. The first model home debuted in March, 2019. Construction will soon begin on the community’s 36 luxury beachfront condominiums, which are contained in four five-story buildings and feature eight spacious three-bedroom units. The impeccably appointed penthouses offer incomparable ocean and golf course views. The Norman Estates at Rancho San Lucas offer seclusion, comfort and relaxation that includes access to a private oceanfront beach club complete with pool, gym, restaurant and recreation room.

Fabian Bello, CEO of the South Floridabased private business charter company Journey Aviation, is a charismatic, highenergy leader with the kind of global vision and business sensibilities it takes to send a company soaring to a higher altitude of performance. It was his strong combination of people skills and business acumen that enabled him to make a seamless transition from serving in an executive role in the logistics industry to the competitive, high-stress environment of private business jet aviation. Journey Aviation’s Fabian Bello possesses many characteristics that set him apart as a leader in business aviation, but one of them is somewhat surprising. His experience with private planes before starting at Journey Aviation wasn’t just limited, it was non-existent. He didn’t fly on them, and he certainly wasn’t making strategic decisions and leading a dedicated team of over a hundred employees in the aviation field. But he’s found his new role fascinating and exciting, and his success is grounded in core business principles. “It boils down to authenticity,” he says. “We must be genuine and trustworthy to really stand out in this industry. I have developed incredible friendships throughout the world before a single stitch of business came into play. I am honored and very proud of this as I believe it is the single most contributing factor to my personal and the company’s success.” For the Cuban born Bello, it’s all about relationships, and he’s continually developing and leveraging them to make Journey Aviation a true global player. Even though he came from a different business background, he brought with him the ability to be a “challenge solver.”

“The management skills were most certainly useful,” says Bello. “And working for a European company while making changes throughout South America and on a Global Business Process Board allowed me to have an innate understanding of how to get multiple cultures to work together. In business aviation, whereby we operate heavy worldwide jets, it is imperative to have the ability to connect with the world. I don’t see my business as regional. It is more of a one-world scenario for me. Same sky, same airplanes, same demands.” Journey Aviation provides exclusive private jet services to Fortune 500 companies, high net worth individuals, politicians and celebrities. The company works with customers and clients who demand the highest standards of privacy, discretion and professionalism. And, of course, safety is of the upmost importance. The aircraft charter game is played in a high stress environment. Some leaders, like Bello, find ways to channel these inherent stresses into fuel and energy to create a work environment team members can thrive in. “We go out of our way to make it fun. It is a very high stress environment and I make it a point to crack jokes, both with my team and clients, to keep the good spirits going.” A vibrant, positive corporate culture is vital to the strength of a company, and Bello has forged that, along with an insistence that company growth comes from building one relationship at a time. It comes down to a simple phrase. “Elevate Your Expectations.” It’s a mantra for Journey Aviation and a deft explanation of the way its new leader is successfully guiding his company.
