Featuring the band, Thirty Seconds to Mars, on the cover of our winter issues was remarkable. I was elated to interview Academy Award winning actor, Jared Leto, and discuss the band’s evolution and upcoming European tour. ith snow-capped Aspen Mountain as a breathtaking backdrop, the much-anticipated St. Regis World Snow Polo Championship was held in mid-December at Rio Grande Park in the heart of Aspen, Colorado.

"Aspen is now a meaningful stop on the summer and winter international polo circuit," said Marc Ganzi, who grew up in Aspen. "With the World Snow Polo Championship, World Cup skiing and X-Games, people can now consider Aspen a home to major international sporting events. That is something that the city of Aspen can be proud of."Â

The event joins St. Moritz as one of the world's top snow polo tournaments and one of Aspen's major international sporting events. It is the only snow polo event in North America and kickoff to the social season in Aspen.

U.S. Polo Assn. defeated defending champion Flexjet in a rematch of the 2016 final to win the coveted St. Regis World Snow Polo title. In front of a record crowd ELEVATEDLUXURYLIFE.COM

For the fifth consecutive year, Melissa and Marc Ganzi, co-founders of Aspen Valley Polo Club, along with polo ambassador and St. Regis Connoisseur Nacho Figueras and his wife Delfina, hosted the star-studded glamorous weekend of sport, socializing and style. Figueras is one of the sport’s most popular and well-recognized players in the world.

The final stop on the World Polo Tour where players compete for valuable points in the final snow polo event of the year attracted some of the biggest names in polo which was evident throughout the three days of competition.

Flexjet (Melissa Ganzi, Juan Bollini, Alejandro Novillo Astrada) found its offensive punch in the second half, outscoring U.S. Polo Assn., 3-1, but ran out of time.

Nic Roldan, the team's field general, was named Most Valuable Player for the fourth time in five years after scoring three goals. Roldan finished with 11 goals for the tournament.

Javi, a 7-year-old stallion, ridden by Alejandro Novillo Astrada and owned by the Ganzis' Wellington, Fla.-based Santa Rita Polo Farm, was Best Playing Pony.

"This event was really successful," Roldan said. "This was probably one of the most successful and competitive ones and we just had a great time."

Roldan is one of the top-rated American players and youngest player ever to win the U.S. Open at age 15.

"The excitement always builds for this event," Roldan said. "It's another great way to promote polo to fans who haven't watched it before. You have some of the greatest players out here. Snow polo is such a fun event. It's great because the spectators are really involved when they

can see the game slower, on a smaller field.

There were two other games to determine the places for the remaining four teams. St. Regis (Marc Ganzi, Nacho Figueras, Nico Pieres) captured the St. Regis Snow Cup with an 8-7 win over Icon Global Aspen Valley Polo Club (Bernie Uechtritz, Carlitos Gracida, Nacho Novillo Astrada) in the subsidiary.

Pieres, making his snow polo debut, scored on a incredible back shot off the post for the game-winner as time ran out.

Figueras was named MVP. Fendi, an 11-year-old black mare ridden by Figueras, was selected Best Playing Pony.

After two shootouts, Audi (Jim Miller, Magoo Laprida, Luis Escobar) defeated Moet (Mike Azzaro, Jason Crowder, Bash Kazi/Omar Mangalhi), 6-5, to finish fifth in the six-team tournament and win the Aspen Valley Snow Cup.

A transfigured clown stares out from the centre of the timepiece.

He won’t be making children laugh or making adults young again – anything but. Matt Barnes has sought to make him disturbing, hypnotic, almost intrusive: the Bubble Clown fits into a collective unconsciousness, about as well as a bull in a china shop.

The Clown’s snarky smile, piercing stare, and rather disfigured look makes him anything but the stuff of dreams – nightmare fare more like. And yet you simply can’t take your eyes off him. Every detail on the whole is fascinating, and each is deliberately contradictory: a smile – but with razor-sharp teeth; an open yet threatening gaze; a clown costume that reveals innumerable tattoos; carnival make-up daubed over scars; and the traditional wig – styled into a Mohican.

Every single distinctive clown feature has been hijacked. The overall effect doesn’t exactly invite itself onto the wrist – it’s more a case of it latching on there in a display of power, consistency, and singularity.

The mechanical cladding for Matt Barnes’ Clown is pretty off-thewall, too. The timepiece lacks hands; instead, hours and minutes are displayed by means of two red circles on the flange. In addition, the Bubble Clown is 52 millimeters wide, offering the Clown a creative expanse whose breadth is unprecedented in watchmaking.

ot many people in the world can say they are a rockstar and a movie star.

Jared Leto proves himself boundless as he fluidly navigates the worlds of rock and film. The Oscar winner is the frontman in Thirty Seconds to Mars, which also consists of his brother Shannon Leto and Tomo Miličević.

After years of successful albums, sold out tours, countless awards and broken records, the band gained a worldwide cultlike following. But for four years, their fans heard only radio silence. Finally, their new single dropped in August, “Walk on Water,’’ and was just the kind of formidable, patriotic sound that their fans, and the nation, had been craving.

Hailed by critics, Billboard describes the song as an “anthemic chorus and heartstirring, propulsive rhythm.” The single spent four weeks topping the charts on Alternative Radio and the band won MTV’s 2017 Best Alternative Artist Award at the EMA’s.

Their accompanying music video is lionized in its own right. Directed by Jared Leto, it was filmed on a single day in all 50 States by 92 professional film crews and through 10,000 fan submissions. The final product is a unique, historic snapshot of America on July 4th, 2017.

What's your interpretation of the bands evolution?

WINTER 2018

The song very much speaks to the times that we’re living in. It's a song about change, it’s a song about standing up and fighting for what you believe in, it's a song about freedom. It’s, at its core, I suppose a bit of a folk song, a gospel song, wrapped up in an anthemic and celebratory feeling.

It's the first single off the new album, we haven’t put music out in over four years, [nearly five years by the time the album comes out] so it’s been a long time coming, and we’re excited that we’re sharing new music, and playing music on stage. 2018 is going to be a very busy and exciting year!

Right now, Walk on Water has been number one on alternative radio for four weeks, and that’s been incredible - we never expected that. It’s exceeded any expectations that we’ve had. We’ve been gone for a long time so we had very humble expectations but the response to the song has been incredible… and we are very very grateful and really happy about how things are going.

We just put a European tour on sale, and in a lot of ways, that’s a very definitive bit of research and a good way to gauge the reaction of what you’re doing is your ticket sales; are you speaking to people and connecting with your audience… it's been our biggest and most successful tour to date. So things are going really well. We’re playing the biggest shows of our entire careers - so a lot to be thankful for.

My brother and I have been doing this since we were kids, and as we grow, the music grows, as the music grows, we evolve. It's an incredible thing to share this with my brother. To be a part of something that was supposed to be impossible - it's just absolutely mind-blowing. We never dreamed that we would have the success all over the globe that we have it's absolutely humbling and we’re really grateful for it.

Where do your tendencies come from?

I wouldn’t say anything because we all need to learn from our challenges and our difficulties - but if I had to say something I suppose I would say to keep dreaming and keep working hard, not worry so much and to breathe deep and to know that things are going to be ok. All of us go through times where we face uncertainty and imbalance, but I’ve always found that with a lot of hard work and creativity you can find solutions to almost any problem.

We live in uncertain times, there’s a great deal of instability. There are really important questions being asked… it's a tumultuous period.

These times always provoke art and artists to consider or reconsider their perspective or point of view, so I think you’re right, there’s opportunities to explore different avenues in times like these. Life goes beyond politics, and art that celebrates something as pure or beautiful as nature is worthy as well. You don't have to be a part of any narrative, but there's an opportunity there if you choose it.

If music or art can move or change a person, then it can change the world. Art and music has certainly inspired me, and changed me, and taught me, and provided me inspiration and comfort. It has been a soundtrack for my life and a powerful companion for me.

Find a conversation that suits you, and a shoe that fits, whether in the hallowed halls of the VIP preview or dancing alongside Hirst’s gilded wooly mammoth “Gone but not Forgotten” at the Faena Hotel. 300 lighted drones is debuted daily in the Faena District, the installation is by Studio Drift and it rises like an iridescent flock of birds.

If you attend (and you are lucky if you have the chance) try to find some bearings within this art mecca that spans South Beach to the Design District. It’s an amalgam of art creators, purveyors, collectors, A-listers and full gawkers who attend Art Basel, Art Miami, NADA, Aqua, Untitled, Spectrum, Fridge, Pulse, Scope, Design Miami

While it may seem like a smoke and mirrors labyrinth both to those attending and others reading of the success and fallout in art columns worldwide and just trying to keep up with the action, pause, focus and remember the artist making the work.

The artists and curators are consciously intending the dialogue. Go, if you go, with open eyes and heart.

My first, focused conversation was with Jamal Cyrus (showing with Inman Gallery’s exhibition at Positions in the main convention of Art Basel Miami Beach). We talked about music as the great communicator and the cultural dream machine the art world can be.

He chatted affably and accessibly about his installation of album covers: some actual, some altered, some fresh off his creative mind press. Artists have the honor of reminding us we can venture into both of these realms: pragmatic and romantic, but warn us not to turn a blind eye and miss the lessons of audible, visual, spiritual and political stories.

It’s a mishmash, of real and ephemeral, we live in that art mirrors.

The Faena District is a cool, new hood, too hip for its own good. Art reserves the right and when executed this well can effectively comment on the disco dance between man and nature, uplifting our hearts as it brings our hipness down to earth.

Santiago Arana's Entrepreneurial Success Story is Proof of the American Dream

work hard, but the sound of nearby gunshots is earth shattering. To Bolivian native, Santiago Arana, these gunshots were not only an omnipresent distraction, but also a wakeup call.

Santiago won a scholarship to study his masters in Finance, but the program was only taught in English. He didn’t speak a word of English, but that did not deter him. He left Bolivia with $120 in his pocket and landed in Santa Barbara, California where he crashed on a couch at his aunts home.

During this particular event, Santiago was working in an office located next door to government headquarters. The Bolivian government was riddled with corruption, and the country was in major social unrest; amalgamated by an assassination attempt on the president and more than 45 casualties. A distraught Santiago was in earshot of the chaos and called his father; together they decided that he should leave the country, continue his studies, and return when the country’s state of affairs was more stable.

“I always thought that, whatever I’m going to do, I’m going to do it 100% and I’m going to make sure I use my time in the most efficient way.” This drive pushed him up the ladder in the fine dining world, and allowed him to make a very decent living. But once Santiago got to the top, he wanted more. He recalls that someone told him, “‘In real estate, you can make a good living selling a couple houses…. or the sky is the limit!’” The latter really resonated with Santiago.

For eight months, Santiago slept on a couch while studying English. He worked as a busboy in a restaurant, since he couldn’t speak English yet.

After 4 months of language immersion, Santiago’s English improved, and he asked to be promoted to a waiter, to which the restaurant manager permitted.

Now, 13 years later, that same restaurant manager works for Santiago. Over the course of the year that he worked at the restaurant, he waited on a a beautiful girl who eventually became his wife.

He fell in love with her and moved to Los Angeles where she lived and continued working in the restaurant industry.

Santiago made the leap into real estate and worked tirelessly, but over the course of three years, he sold only a couple houses.

In an industry where connections and word of mouth are paramount to success, Santiago was at a disadvantage. He admits, “I didn’t know anyone. I didn’t have any friends or family. I was in LA by myself, I knew my wife, but that was it.”

A big follower and fan of Tony Robbins, Santiago kept in mind a quote, 'the reason for not succeeding is not the lack of resources, but the lack of resourcefulness.' He worked on his resourcefulness and slowly began to grow his rolodex, finally gaining some momentum. Suddenly, alongside the rest of the country, Santiago was blindsided by the crash of 2008.

A microcosm of the national economy, the real estate business was utterly immobile. It was a crushing blow, and now with a young family to consider, Santiago decided to go back to the restaurant world. As he pulled into the parking lot to submit his application, Santiago had an epiphany. He had never quit anything in his life before, so why now? Thinking to himself he said, “I’m going to stick to real estate and I’m going to make it happen, no matter what.”

In this pivotal moment; whether it was a gut feeling, divine intervention, or dumb luck, this decision inevitably led him to become one of the top Realtors in the United States.

Looking in the rearview mirror, it’s clear that his life and career could have gone down two very different roads. Especially given the fact that his real estate career was not matured and the state of the economy was in crisis. With the help of his innate persistence, he sought mentorship from a successful realtor.

He learned to capitalize on his upbeat and likable personality,

and during open houses he thrived in the realm of forging new relationships. He slowly but surely started to figure out the formula to success, which he outlines in four steps. “First; know who you really are, define what you want, have unbreakable faith that it's going to happen, and lastly, work your ass off to make it happen.” Santiago says, “I stuck to it, worked really hard, put the energy into the universe and it came back to me.”

By April 2012, the economy began its upturn and Santiago, now experienced with 6 years in the industry, used that momentum, and his business exploded to a new level. By the end of the year, he was named among the Top 250 Realters in the United States by the Wall Street Journal, and has since made the list each year consecutively, exponentially increasing his ranking.

In 2013, he joined The Agency as a Principal and Partner, along with Billy Rose and Mauricio Umansky. He has worked with celebrities, he has broken records, and today, he’s on track to exceed $500 million in sales.

Brewer-Clifton ‘Gnesa’ Chardonnay Sta. Rita Hills The Gnesa vineyard is a small vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills planted exclusively to Chardonnay. I picked this wine due to its complexity that borders on the taste of that elusive, savory “fifth taste,” umami. Fans of these wines find their individuality and character is unsurpassed and, because of that, they are some of the most fascinating and compelling wines in the world. I would pair this Chardonnay with some typical food pairings such as chicken, lobster, Comté and Gruyère cheese and mushrooms.

Typically, I would not include a Pinot Noir in a list of winter wines, but this Pinot Noir is sourced from the famed Bien Nacido Vineyard in Santa Maria Valley. The wine is one of the first established vineyards in Santa Barbara County and displays a lovely layering of dark raspberry thyme, cherry, anise and dill while showing plenty of earth notes. Expect a big and ripe wine that will stand up to some comfort food. I would choose to pair this with pork roast, rack of lamb or a long-cooked pinot-braised duck with spicy greens.

Ca’ Del Grevino Grenache Santa Maria Valley The Ca’ Del Grevino Estate produces not only produces Santa Barbara County Signature Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, they also produce some great Italian and Spanish varietals. This Grenache opens with deep aromas of blackberry, blueberry and pepper. It is finely textured yet not oversized. Licorice and white pepper accents with blueberry and raspberry flavors are discovered through the juicy finish.

The perfect pairing would be long-slow roasted pork, lamb, rabbit and based on hearty Spanish or Portuguese cooking. The wine can handle being paired with dishes with a bit of spice, too.

Granted, I prefer the cool-climate version that has a bit more of a spicy character. Best described as big, brooding, Syrah is known for its powerful black fruit flavors and savory undertones. This varietal is not for the faint of heart or palate, but it’ll warm you up in a hurry. Pairings for this wine would include grilled meats, venison and wild boar.
