FALL 2018

T

he fall season seems to have encroached upon us quickly, as summer’s jam-packed schedule flew by. My summer began with my sister’s wedding in Europe and then a spontaneous trip to Nantucket that ended up lasting two months. Now, I’m packing my bags for Italy, for yet another wedding abroad! What I’ve learned as a girl on-the-go is to find pieces of solitude while traveling; whether that be a warm bath, a good book, FaceTiming with Grandma, or giving thanks for good health. All the while, we’ve been compiling our biggest issue yet — with George Clooney and Rande Gerber as our cover story! The celebrity pair has taken their tequila company, Casamigos, to new heights with their award-winning spirit. The taste is exceptionally smooth and hailed for its drinkability sans ‘training wheels,' while I conducted a separate field study and found the flavor is also incredible in a margarita (or two). The rest of our editorial is designed to complement our big stars, Clooney and Gerber, focusing on culture as a recurring motif. The pages are filled with compelling features on artists, musicians, and actors. Marc Dennis, an artist and savant uses his paintbrush as a tool to give voice to the voiceless. Similarly, Tom Morello, named one of Rolling Stone’s Greatest Guitarists, uses his guitar as a ‘weapon for change.’ Known best for his time with the band Rage Against the Machine and then Audioslave, Morello is also an honors grad in political science from Harvard University and is determined to use his music to forge a new path in the political realm. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee eloquently explains his intention “to create a sonic conspiracy with musicians from diverse backgrounds and genres but with a common purpose: shredding fury merged with the electronic wizardry of 2018.” In a feature about culture of a different kind, we experience a world-class polo event through the eyes of Jan Hadwen Hubbell. She describes the Aspen event as “this historic sport where adrenaline meets luxury, Aspen Valley Polo Club is the dream-child of the Ganzis, called by many the first family of U.S. polo.” The king's sport originated from Persia over 2,000 years ago and remains culturally rich today, while also requiring an intense level of athleticism which is exhilarating to watch. Another notable highlight is our entrepreneurial feature on Matt Conable, founder of men’s jewelry and accessory brand, William Henry. Matt takes us through his fascinating journey; from being a struggling artist handcrafting knives to being

featured in the Smithsonian at a young age, and then what drove him to turn down a job in Silicon Valley to pursue his entrepreneurial endeavors. His extraordinary pocketknives remain a cornerstone of the brand, created from ancient artifacts and precious materials like dinosaur bone, mammoth tooth, and fossil corral. Now, his brand, William Henry, is a formidable force in men’s jewelry and accessories with a celebrity following of Brad Pitt, Harrison Ford and Pierce Brosnan, to name a few. We also handpicked two amazing mountain regions to plan your winter getaway — jetset to Aspen and Sun Valley to sip champagne slopeside or fly in a heli-ski adventure. And finally, check out fall fashion to spice up your autumn wardrobe with furs from Dennis Basso, gems from Simon G. Jewelry, and timepieces from Corum. These culturally rich features are sure to inspire and entertain, perfect for reflection during this fall season.

t’s the year of tequila! George Clooney, Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman’s Casamigos is taking over. 2018 has also brought the newest addition to the family, Casamigos Mezcal. It’s not only an exciting time for the ever-expanding agave spirits industry, but also a direct reflection of the impact of Casamigos, the fastest growing tequila company in the world. Rande Gerber gives insight on the billion-dollar brand and what’s next. Photo courtesy of Casamigos

Describe the industry and the impact of Casamigos on the industry.

41 FALL 2018

Rande Gerber: Great brands reflect the people who create them. We created Casamigos for us to drink and share with friends. We took our time, had the patience and the money to get it right. It’s all we drink and that’s why we are involved in every aspect of Casamigos. From the tequila, to the name and bottle design, to marketing and distribution, for us it’s our lifestyle. Consumers are very smart and they know what they want. They love and appreciate the authenticity and quality of our brand.

“ “ Great brands

reflect the people who create them.” What are the components that you love about Casamigos Tequila?

ELEVATEDLUXURYLIFE.COM

43

We grew it drink by drink. We take our time, some companies speed up the creation process, but we don’t. We are a small batch ultra-premium tequila and we use old fashioned methods which take quite a while. Besides growing the agaves from 7-10 years, the whole process takes time, which includes slow roasting our agave piñas for 72 hours, while most others steam theirs for 7 hours, and an 80-hour fermentation process compared to the average 48. There are tricks you can do, that other companies might do, that we don’t because the quality of Casamigos is of the utmost importance. As you can see George and I sign every batch that is made. We taste every batch before it goes into the bottle. We don’t want to speed up the process and the demand has been incredible.

What inspired you to add mezcal to the existing Casamigos family? Just as we made our tequila, we wanted to create a mezcal that we want to drink. Smooth with no burn and smoked to perfection. One we are proud to share with our friends. We were given mezcals to try a few years ago, and there was one we fell in love with. At the time, all of our attention was focused on sharing Casamigos Tequila with the world. I didn’t want to lose the chance of having this Mezcal, so we stayed in touch with the family. They understood our passion and commitment for Casamigos and were kind enough to be patient knowing one day it would become part of our Casamigos family and now it is.

AVENGER

Marc Dennis, an Artist, Savant, and Scholar Paints the World with the Selfless Intention to Give Voice to the Voiceless BY OLIVIA DAANE patron of the arts of note introduces me to Marc Dennis. I get the immediate feeling Marc is up to the challenge of an interview. Being in the circle of his energy, his exuberance is like being shot out of a LIFE cannon. I am laughing in seconds and wondering if this Johnny Depp look-a-like can paint. He can. I would go so far as to call him a savant. Not only technical prowess at his bequest, but that je ne sais quoi of gesture and intention that makes his realism breathe and makes us hold ours. His works freeze time and stimulate the mind. They stun. He believes in animal spirits and our divine connectedness. Marc drew nonstop as a child and continues to fill sketchbooks as an adult, “to better understand my world and to mystify it more...to give voice to the voiceless,” he stresses, his tone honest and urgent. His first models were lizards found in one of his childhood home bases, the El Yunque rainforest of Puerto Rico. “Anoles and iguanas. They just didn’t move,” he jokes. His humor another gift that has helped him take in the contradictions in life, the beautiful-ugly, and help us all see it without crumbling. Marc wants to show us his world, our world and to make it as magical and powerful as the one he inhabits with his preternatural vision and paint. His words will speak for him as relentlessly as his paintings.

You are such an energized person. When and how do you calm, collect and restore to parent Zayla (9), Azev and prepare for the painstaking and time-rich painting process? Just before falling asleep. My brain’s still fighting. It’s saying “Dude, I can still do this. Stay up!” But my body’s saying “You know what brain? Chill out.” I’m a vivid dreamer. My dreams are like cheap entertainment.

FALL 2018

Who are your mentors? Who started you on this path? I look up to my parents. My dad worked hard. My mom is the best listener in my life. I went to school at UT, Austin. I hung out with Peter Saul and had conversations. But, no one ever taught me a technique. I’m very much alone with my methods. I learned to paint on my own by looking at Caravaggio, Titian, Velazquez, Goya, Manet. We had imaginary conversations. My studio is my sanctuary. When I go in to paint, I’m well-prepared. Each painting is a speech and I have a blueprint.

Olivia Daane: What inspires you in nature? Marc Dennis: Forests. I love the density...the extreme tactility of leaves brushing your face, your body. There’s more mystery in the forest than anywhere else in the world.

What is your best quality? What is your biggest challenge? I’m generous, giving. Challenges? I’m always challenged. I have a devil and an angel on my shoulder. I don’t like ambiguity. I am indecisive until I commit and then I’m a Navy Seal. I go in and get out.

are related to other animals. Maybe they (other people) don’t get it or maybe they don’t know how to talk about it. I believe we are all connected: connections to other animals, to stars, moon, pulls of the earth. There’s something primordial being human that we need to be more in touch with. It’s silly to me to push that aside.

What mystifies you? I am so mystified by human behavior. That’s it. I am so mystified by humans. I much prefer to watch animals, other animals, deer, alligators, turtles even...than to watch humans interact. I’m not that one to ask why don’t we all get along? I understand why we don’t all get along. It’s so obvious. I believe in the mythologies that have been created by aboriginal peoples about how we

So where do you dream of going? What’s your refuge? Every time I go into a forest, I feel as though I should never leave. Like I should find a little place to settle down. I like buffer zones and they usually exist in my mind. I love spending time alone. It’s time to sort your inner self from your outer self. Where do you go next in real time? I head from ArtAspen and ArtCrush to Houston for an art fair in October, then I have a solo show in Dallas, November 17, a solo show in Palm Desert and another in Vienna, Austria in the spring. ~ Marc’s urge to right what is wrong is palpable. He moves intensely, with an internal compass, with a strong sense of justice. He knows what he calls, “the limits of being human.” He is a noted Holocaust scholar and professor. He hates unfairness. His painted universe is real. It is a beautiful world. It is a scary world. A gorgeous capture - memento mori. He didn’t wait around in life and he never will. He found the tools required for his relentless pursuit by going to the source like a time traveler. He lives with that devil and angel on each shoulder. Like the putti of the High Renaissance, they float above him steering his deft hand away from ambiguity and into paintings that mirror the divine music on his playlist. Despite the grandeur of it all, Marc is the least likely showman. He cannot help but swallow us up with his canvases. He does not need to be this generous with himself or his paint. But he is. He could go hide in his buffer zones, the quiet forest. But he doesn’t. He stays. He sticks with us. Pushes our buttons. Schools us. As his visions do. On his bedside table: Uncontrollable Beauty, The Reason for Flowers, Nature and Its Symbols On his playlist: The Medieval chants of Anonymous

65 FALL 2018

here’s a sign hanging out on the shop floor at Van Dam Custom Boats, which reads “Mission Statement: To Build the World’s Finest Wooden Boats.” The sign itself is a thing of beauty, mahogany finished to a high luster and handlettered with 23 karat gold leaf, like many of the transoms on boats that have left the shop over the years. The sign and its artistry are reminders to all who see it - quality is not an abstract concept, but a product of details, and details of details, executed to the highest standards. But the Van Dam experience is more than creating the finest boats, as each vessel is uniquely customized with hand-crafted expertise and is fully tailored to the vision of their client. As their Marketing Director Kim Melching eloquently explained, “Our boats are not lifeless production models. The craftsman, from design to launch, breathe their soul into the boat. It’s not out of necessity… it’s a passionate choice.” This level of excellence is borne of diligence and care. Nothing there happens by accident. And it shows. From the long-range business plan to the weekly shop cleanup, every task is tackled mindfully, efficiently, conscientiously.

It’s a philosophy that is embraced wholeheartedly by everyone on the sixteen acres—the in-house name for the sprawling campus of storage sheds and workshops shared by Van Dam Custom Boats, a service and storage facility and a yacht brokerage facility based in Boyne City, Michigan. It comes as no surprise that with such a strong work ethic at its core, Van Dam is starting to make waves amongst enthusiasts and connoisseurs the world over, despite having eschewed formal marketing for much of the company’s history. Instead, Van Dam has always trusted that quality speaks for itself, and square dealing with clients buys earnest word-of-mouth advertising.

A recent escalation of marketing efforts and the addition of a dedicated sales team has elevated the brand at an unprecedented pace, albeit atypical of their unpretentious culture as a whole. But with forty years of humble diligence under their belts, Van Dam is poised to become the darling of luxury for consumers seeking a beyond-top-of-range experience. Experience? In a utilitarian steel shed, in a small lakeside town in Michigan? Yes. Although boats are the company’s product, what they uniquely offer is an ability and an eagerness to work with their customers to produce a boat that is not only tailored to fit but designed from the ground up as an extension of the owner’s personality.

In a marketplace overflowing with luxury goods that conflate “custom” with “available in different colors,” Van Dam acts as curator of their clients’ most extravagant fantasies, lending their expertise to ensure that their clients’ ideas—often literally sketched on envelopes and bar napkins—coalesce into a whole that exceeds every expectation. One of the current builds, Victoria Z, nearing completion in the rigging area of the shop, is an excellent example. Under construction for nearly three years, this project exemplifies not only Van Dam’s technical excellence as boatbuilders, but the way in which clients can exert control over even the most minuscule detail. At thirty-five feet, every square inch of Victoria Z, inside and out, represents a collaboration between client and builder that nurtures every idea to its fullest expression, while maintaining the overarching vision of the boat as a whole. At any given moment, clients have the ability to revise and edit their vision for the final form of their boat.

The fuel tanks are painted the same pearl white as the bottom. So is the bilge. Though there is some way to go before its launch, it’s clear that this is a special boat among special boats. And to this client, the process is just as important as the product. As Melching professed, “You’re not just buying a boat. It truly is a side-by-side, walk the path journey you're traveling with us.” With the commissions currently underway, Van Dam is accepting clients that are willing to wait until at least 2020 for delivery. But discerning individuals know the score: a Van Dam boat isn’t a thing you buy, it’s a process you undertake. One worth waiting for. — Jamie Agoglia is a renowned writer, photojournalist, and entrepreneur. Her work has been displayed at events and galleries across Southern California. The range of shows and movies that you’ve been in is so diverse, did you ever expect that this quiet passion of yours would grow into a career? There was always hope and there still is, as far as creating a bigger and brighter future for myself. My wife and I talk about this all the time; I really couldn’t have designed my life any better, even if I had the ability to do so. And as far as having such a range of characters and roles that I’ve played, it comes back to when I used to read a script and start to subconsciously create these character choices, almost out of intuition. When I’m preparing for a new role, I just kind of let whatever I feel roll out and just chose to be bold and it keeps people guessing of what I can do next. It’s a kind of pressure that I appreciate, knowing that I’m trusted to surprising people and pull it off.

Jamie Agoglia: When did your love for acting start? Chris Coy: In High School, just by way of an elective during my freshman year, I didn’t even request Drama, I was just placed there. In fact, my parents were really strict about my grades growing up and I was a straight-A student my whole life. Ironically, the only C I ever got was in Drama. I was very shy but Drama definitely helped me break out of that by the end of my freshman year. I continued with Drama for the rest of my time in High School. My first lead role was actually Mogli in my High School production of “The Jungle Book.” It was atrocious but it was a lot of fun! As a southern boy, it’s football country; you don’t grow up saying ‘oh I want to be an actor,’ but I was kind of quietly harboring this love for it.

Coy has the ability to shift into characters from a multitude of eras and paths of life. This is a quality that makes Chris Coy a true entertainer. Just having come out in September was Season 2 of “The Duece,” and Coy said it for himself, “It’s going to be hot.” Also, be on the lookout for is Coy in Jason Reitman’s new movie “The Front Runner,” co-starring Hugh Jackman. If you were to meet someone with aspirations of making it big in the world of entertainment, what would your words of wisdom be to them? In work and in life, be bold. If it scares you, do it. The most important advice I’ve ever got, and it’s really for anyone that is trying their hand at this, is that you have to work hard. You have to work hard and treat it like a job. A friend of mine was just telling me a story about when he was first trying to act and ran into his idol, Philip Seymour Hoffman, on the street. My friend had a little liquid courage in him and started asking Hoffman for advice about making it big. Hoffman pulled off his sunglasses and said, “Work hard.” At the time, my friend was almost disappointed by that advice. But now almost 10 years later and having developed a career, it really is the golden advice. That’s what it takes. Work hard, persevere, because the truth is that you’re going to be shut down ten times more than you’ll be let in.

t the base of Mt Sopris, one of Colorado’s most majestic peaks, rising almost thirteen thousand feet, and often snow-covered, lives a majesty of a different kind: a world-class polo club created by Melissa and Marc Ganzi. A relative fledgling in this historic sport where adrenaline meets luxury, Aspen Valley Polo Club is the dream-child of the Ganzis, called by many the first family of U.S. polo. In four short years they have built AVPC into the fastest growing U.S. Polo Association sanctioned club in America. They now run fourteen tournaments per summer, and draw top world polo players such as Nacho Figueras, considered the ambassador of the sport. Today, under sapphire skies and a dazzling western sun there is something different and exceptional afoot: a large white VIP tent, women sporting Kentucky Derby hats and Piper Heidsieck champagne flowing freely for the Annual Aspen Valley Hospital Benefit called Chukkers, Champagne and Caviar. The polo match, which combines pros and amateurs, is the Rocky Mountain Open Final, named after the major North American mountain range stretching more than 3,000 miles from Canada to the Rio Grande. Now, those mountains are dwarfed by the thunder of eight polo ponies (ponies in name only, an Argentinean horse bred for

its tremendous agility, speed and intelligence) charging just inches away from us on a field so green and lush it looks as if you should be wielding your Titleist #3 putter on it. The riders are engrossing us with amazing athleticism as they gracefully swirl the four-foot mallets and accurately strike a white sphere the size of a baseball. This is a heartstopping full contact sport that is as exhilarating to watch as it must be to play. The level of difficulty is apparent and at times, it seems downright impossible to hit that little ball through the goal posts on a horse galloping 35 mph. Something else is unique and distinctive here today in the world of polo. In front of a sold-out crowd of 600 dining on a lavish menu and Beverly Hills Caviar at $25K+ tables, the founders of AVPC, Marc and Melissa Ganzi are playing for opposing teams, he for La Karina, she for AVPC. instrument the Ganzis are hoping will help bring polo to a wider audience. Frequently, their tournaments at this spectacular club, complete with a 75-stall barn, which is so organized and clean you could practically eat off the floor, are free for the public to enjoy. Every stall is needed for the four teams that will play here today, because each game uses a minimum of 50 horses. The sport is so demanding for the equines that players need a new horse every seven minutes or so. The ritual of the players changing horses between chukkers is captivating. They line up side by side and hop onto the fresh horse’s back without dismounting. And at AVPC, there is a groom’s charming canine, which participates in the ritual by lying down between the horses and wiggling on his back until each player has trotted off on a new mount. Originating in Persia over 2,000 years ago, polo was initially a game for cavalry units to keep in shape, sometimes played with as many as 100 players per side. What a sound that must have been as they all charged the goal! Today, the sport, which has been in America since the 1800s, is played with four players per side.

Austria. And today, she is one of the top women in US polo, and as often as not, one of the only women on the field. Melissa is having a good day at today’s match and the score is close. But soon, at the beginning of the third chukker, La Karina makes a goal in just ten seconds. Unheard of! In the end, her husband Marc along with Nic Roldan (named MVP), Brian Boyd and Stewart Armstrong prevail with a thrilling 8-5 victory. Though Melissa has hoisted many trophies in her career, this Sunday it is her husband’s team standing in front of the glistening trophy table. La Karina becomes the club’s most winning team and Marc Ganzi graces the cover of the latest issue of Polo Magazine.

87

The Ganzis, polo enthusiasts extraordinaire, spend their winters at their sister club, Grand Champions Polo Club in Wellington Florida, which has ten fields. There Melissa plays for Piaget and Flexjet and Marc for Audi. Their focus has been to make polo accessible to everyone and that includes their polo school and non-profit that introduces children to the sport. Melissa and Marc are the parents of tournament-winning players, Grant and Riley Ganzi. It all began for Melissa when her father-in-law (also a successful polo player) gave her a polo pony for her birthday in 2000. While an accomplished equestrian since childhood, she had never played polo, but took to the sport quickly and has many titles and trophies to her name. She was the first female to win the USPA Monty Waterbury Cup. She set a world record by playing 32 consecutive chukkers in a benefit for Wounded Warriors. She has played with Prince Harry and Prince William. She is one of few women to compete in the US Open of Polo. She has played snow polo in Aspen and

Not to worry, there will be many other chances and more teams as the Ganzis put the finishing touches nearby on two new full size polo fields. Their hearts are as big as the obvious strength of their physique for they will continue to offer this marquis benefit event each year, one that raised over half a million dollars today. When asked “What is the number-one thing horses have taught you?” Melissa answers, “To believe in myself.” And surely she must with the achievements she has logged in a decade and a half. At their Florida club, they have resurrected many prominent cups that had been forsaken. Between their son, Grant, and themselves, they have played on and sponsored three teams at once in the US Open tournament. They breed and raise polo ponies. They have sponsored tournaments for youth, women, and gay polo players… changing the face of polo at one of the nation’s fastest growing polo clubs. “We want to make polo part of the community,” says Melissa. And with that, she removes her riding boots, the exertion from this exhilarating sport obvious on her face, and she slips into stylish espadrilles to go stand by her team for the trophy presentation. — Jan Hadwen Hubbell is an award winning writer, journalist and poet.

Kalparisma Nova Galaxy Celebrating a decade of the Kalparisma

In 2008, Parmigiani Fleurier launched the Kalparisma family, its first mechanical collection for women. The brand is now celebrating the tenth anniversary of this phenomenal collection with the Kalparisma Nova Galaxy, a watch that is more feminine and captivating than ever. AN AVENTURINE GLASS DIAL As is the case for many superb inventions, Aventurine glass was created by accident. In the 19th century, a glass-blower in the Italian city of Murano happened to spill some copper shavings into molten glass. This gave rise to Aventurine glass, now a much sought-after material, scattered with metal inclusions and named after the Italian expression "a l’avventura", literally "by chance" – a tribute to this lucky twist of fate. Parmigiani Fleurier is a pioneer in the use of Aventurine in watchmaking and has numerous special editions that showcase the material on their dials. These pieces are called "Galaxy" as a reminder of the sparkling constellations evoked by the material. Likewise, the Kalparisma Nova Galaxy represents a star-scattered sky that tells the story of the passage of time. The delta-shaped hands are skeletonised to better reveal the celestial display and to enhance the watch's delicate femininity. THE NOVA STAR, INSPIRED BY RESTORATION One of the principal high points of the Kalparisma collection is its small seconds at 6 o'clock, which takes the form of a star performing one revolution per minute. Halfway between a watch function and a marvellous decoration, the "Nova" is inspired by a

piece from the Maurice-Yves Sandoz collection that was restored at the Parmigiani Fleurier workshops. On the reverse of this pocket watch, a number of stars began to turn whenever the minute repeater was activated. Michel Parmigiani was captivated by this animation and knew that he would one day transcribe it into a women's watch, many years before he began to design the Kalparisma. Restoration has always been the soul of Parmigiani Fleurier, inspiring its present-day creations. This little star has found its ultimate place at the heart of a dial designed to represent the galaxy. In astronomy, "Nova" refers to a star that suddenly becomes very bright. This burst of light aptly describes the Kalparisma Nova Galaxy. MAJESTIC STONE-SETTING The Kalparisma Nova Galaxy is available in two majestic versions that differ both in terms of case material, and specifically the stone-setting that adorns them. The first, in rose gold with its shimmering reflections, matches the indices and Nova star. The sides of the case are set with 46 Top Wesselton diamonds for a total of ~0.84 carats and a glittering play of light. The stone-set rose gold edition is limited to 50 pieces. It is joined by the even more exclusive white gold version: a total of 28 pieces with a dazzling "snow" setting. The entire case is set with painstakingly arranged diamonds in sizes expertly selected by the master stone-setter – smaller on the periphery, and gradually getting bigger as they near the case's curves. Each of the 182 stones has a role to play in this ~2.28-carat fresco, which evokes glittering snow and blends harmoniously with the dial's constellation.

PARMIGIANI FLEURIER Taking its name from its founder, watchmaker and restorer Michel Parmigiani, the fine watchmaking brand was founded in 1996 in Fleurier, in the Swiss valley of Val-de-Travers. With its own watchmaking centre ensuring its independence, the brand has both full control over the production process and unique creative freedom. For twenty years, the Parmigiani Fleurier signature has been ingrained in respected timepieces inspired by established watchmaking tradition. They are the labour of a lifetime – that of Michel Parmigiani, the talented individuals who assist him, and the special relationship between the Manufacture and the masterpieces of the past, enabling it to invent a bold future.

THE CALIBRE PF332, DEVELOPED AND MANUFACTURED INHOUSE The calibre PF332 is the first self-winding mechanical movement from Parmigiani Fleurier. Incorporated in the Kalparisma since 2008, it makes this model the brand's first mechanical watch for women. The unique feature of this movement is its series-mounted double barrel, which helps to stabilise the distribution of energy and ensure its uniform transmission to the regulator. It offers the finest haute horlogerie finishes: the bridges are sand-blasted, drawn out or "Côtes de Genève" decorated, then bevelled by hand and, finally, rhodiumplated. The 22-carat gold oscillating weight features a guilloché barley grain motif. The craftsmanship reflects the high expectations that Michel Parmigiani has for his brand: each of the 220 components, however small or hidden, deserves the very finest finishes. This attention to detail is what makes the Kalparisma Collection so precious.

The Admiral

ELEVATEDLUXURYLIFE.COM

Corum

The Admiral is one of the pillars of Corum’s heritage. Unveiled in 1960, five short years after the brand’s creation, it embodies Corum’s idea of maritime watchmaking. Although it has always been loyal to its artistic fibre, Corum has never been afraid to set sail for distant shores. That’s the case today with the Admiral 45 Squelette, a radical piece that showcases both a nautical design and pure watchmaking mechanics. The mechanics are now visible for all to see. The particular nature of the movement calls for this approach; it was conceived in house, designed by Corum and made by EMC, its own production entity. Calibre CO 082 features a 42-hour power reserve. Presented in full view, it provides the Admiral with a more energetic look. The Admiral 45 Squelette is more than just a watch without a dial. Its bridges have all been openworked, then coated with an anthracite grey surface that provides two contrasts. The first is with the movement’s nickel silver geartrains, whose copper colour stands out strikingly from the other components. The second is with the dominant colours of the Admiral 45 Squelette's different models: turquoise blue, yellow and red. These bright colours are distributed in different places on each version: on the seconds hand, the case, the bracelet and the date. As of today, Corum provides for the possibility of creating customised pieces with combinations of these three different colours, not to mention all the possibilities of coloured bracelets. The date is not designed in a traditional way. The date disc features numbers that have been enlarged. These Arabic numerals have not been painted or engraved on sapphire discs, as is normally the case with this kind of watchmaking creation. Instead, they have been individually blanked by means of precise electrical discharge machining. This blanking makes it possible to have thin numerals that do not require support and which are geared into position under the flange by means of a transmission system. This aerial architecture accentuates the skeleton effect of the Admiral 45. It also makes it possible to have a less obstructed view of the in-house calibre visible on the lower bridge.

To make it easier to read the large date on this skeleton watch, Corum has placed an aperture with a solid-coloured bottom at 6 o’clock. Its colours further the contrast with the date and also add a modern and sporty touch to the Admiral 45 Squelette. The different colours of this collection - turquoise blue, yellow and red - can be found in this aperture. This skeleton composition features wide Dauphine hour and minute hands, which make their way around the 12 pennants characteristic of the Admiral collection, engraved under the famous 12-sided bezel. All of this is presented in a grade 5 titanium case 45 mm in diameter and featuring a vulcanised rubber bracelet. Further adding to the nautical aspirations of the Admiral collection, the watch is water resistant to 300 metres. Sporty chic and energetic, the collection features seven models, each in a limited edition of 288 pieces (three models with a natural titanium case, four with one in matte black PVD).

103 FALL 2018

The sky was luminous, hazy, and I was standing outside my hotel in Vermillion, South Dakota, looking out onto a landscape so flat that it might have been unrolled for inspection, when J. Steven Manolis joined me. He was born in Vermillion, and we were off to the opening of the ambitious survey of his paintings at the University of South Dakota, which is located there, and which he had attended. So, this cannot have been an unfamiliar view. But he remained there alongside me for a while, gazing. “The light is different here,” he said. That’s what you observe in the Mediterranean. But the Midwest? How so? “In the Heartland, you are thousands of miles away from any large body of water,” he said. “The water droplets that are in the air on the coast are non-existent. That’s just an opinion. But the midday light on the prairie is totally intense.” An artist’s exact eye, so this was an appropriate beginning for a significant day in the art career of J. Steven Manolis. It has been a remarkable career, and one which has occurred in a period when the art world’s venerable guild system, if it has not quite gone into melt, certainly is more fluid, more receptive, when talent arrives by an untraditional route. A long route, too. As a boy, Manolis was set on becoming an artist, but he had respected the prohibition of his grandfather, a Greek immigrant, to whom all artists were Communists, so he went into business instead. He joined Salomon Brothers in 1972 when he was twenty-four, and in due course created and pioneered multiple instruments for monetizing mortgages, an act of business creativity so radical that he likens it to the invention of the atom bomb. How so? Today the global securitized residential and commercial mortgage markets are trillions in size and the largest fixed income sector in the world. At thirty-three, Manolis became a General Partner, the youngest ever at Salomon. His art hunger had sprung back to life and was fed by two entities he calls his Guardians. Has he seen them? “Dimly.” Skeptics should be aware that there is a robust art world tradition of fruitful interaction with such forces; that Kandinsky, Malevich and Mondrian were Theosophists; and that William Blake regularly channeled Voltaire and John Milton. Manolis was heading up a division at Salomon, but the artist’s call had become too strong to ignore. A meeting with Wolf Kahn, the landscape painter, was instrumental, and Manolis re-

Manolis didn’t take his work public until 2010. And it wasn’t that public, just putting a piece into a group show in Easthampton, Long Island, and not even telling close friends. His was the only work to sell and it went for just $6,000, small change at Salomon, but at such a show, a triumph. “I felt like an astronaut must have when he first stepped on the moon. Real, indescribable joy and exhilaration. Because at that moment, I absolutely knew it was going to happen. And happen big time!” he said. He was sixty-five, and his goal was to spend the rest of his life painting, seven days a week, and that he intended to become one of the leading abstract painters of the time. The world Manolis had abandoned, the business world, has its protocols, its rituals, its codes, but so does the art world, and, as he soon discovered, the bohemian code is one of the strictest. “How can a businessman make art? I keep on being asked that,” he said. Most successful artists conduct their careers in a businesslike fashion, of course. Indeed, an analysis of the practice of those pragmatic visionaries, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, was published by the Harvard Business School. But the business side of the art life usually is the great unspoken. That great artist, the late Dennis Oppenheim, told me, “If you give an artist sodium pentothal, you know, truth serum, before you talk to him, and you ask why do you make your art? Most would say for the money.” It’s a subject J. Steven Manolis addresses openly and

signed at the age of forty-two, to make a new beginning. Several, in fact. Now wealthy, he resolved both to look for business situations and to explore the art world, a project that came to involve collecting and a philanthropic position on the advisory board, ultimately Chairman, of the National Academy of Arts on Fifth Avenue, New York. Most urgently, though, he needed to make art. A decade of regular sketching trips with Kahn followed; his mentor working in pastel, he in watercolor. Producing both in the field and in his studio, and making artworks of considerable size, he came to handle this medium, so under-used in the contemporary art world, with the controlled urgency it requires. So, he resolved to tackle another medium—acrylics—with the ultra-focus that he had brought to Salomon. “I learned to mix acrylics anywhere from twenty parts water to one part paint, to one part water to one part paint, to pure acrylics right out of the tube,” he said. “Oh my God, it flows. Its transparency, its energy, it’s just like watercolor. Energy is conveyed with movement and action. Not every drop. There’s a contrast between the stuff that moves and doesn’t move that gives diversity and energy to a painting.” Arguably he has developed a multi-faceted approach that once you become familiar with it—and all its variants—you realize that incredibly it has become his own unique signature style in three short years.

art gladly. Is that the whole truth? Of course not. That truth is in the work that currently hangs in the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts at USD. Four large red paintings confront you from the far wall as you enter the large gallery: the giant REDWORLD (Self-Portrait) Quadriptych (12 x 16 ft.); four paintings hung as one. Manolis much admired Hans Hofmann, a formidable teacher in the Ab Ex period, who insisted it was time for artists to paint what they felt, not what they saw. “People would ask him how that could be done?” Manolis said. “He would say, how nature does it. Through color.” Manolis has focused on pure abstraction from the beginning of his mature career. This has been relatively short, a few years, so many will be fresh to his work. Which, of course, makes it question time. Just about any figurative painting offers clues, both as to the artist’s skills—can this person actually draw—and to the singularity of his or her project. You have way less to go on when you look at a competently executed abstraction and are making up your mind whether it (A) belongs in a hotel lobby, (B) is plausible, modish, but unfelt, or, (C), is headed for an exemplary wall. The case for (C) is made by the energy that the work both communicates and generates. And not just slap-happy energy, either. Mark Rothko said, “There’s no such thing as good painting about nothing.” Artists do not necessarily zip their lips when discussing that inner something. Rothko also wrote “I’m interested only in expressing basic human emotions: tragedy, ecstasy, doom, and so on.” Ad Reinhardt claimed that he was making “the last paintings.” Barnett Newman told Harold Rosenberg that if his work was “read properly, it would mean the end of all state capitalism and totalitarianism.” J. Steven Manolis does not indulge in such scenery-chewing, but his Tolerance, a black and white triptych in the show, was an appalled reaction after the American journalist James Foley was beheaded on YouTube by ISIS in 2014. It is one in a series of seventeen black-and-whites painted over three months to give form to his response to the ugly horror. “It was renamed Tolerance… BWG by my stepdaughter,” he says. “Its original title was Black, White and Gray. Because I think we all have to live in black, white and gray. You can’t live in pure black and white.” Indeed, the addition of ‘Tolerance’ to the title gave the series a fabulous, direct meaning honoring the Black, White and Gray concept. The thinking and feeling that enter the works of Manolis are as varied as they are intense. Splash (Pink Sands), a double canvas in the show, distills his experience of the most beautiful beach he has encountered: Pink Sands, North Bermuda. It’s part of his Splash series of 2016, a very successful series for him in every way, which he painted at a time when he was contemplating the difference between human energy and energy elsewhere in the natural world. It’s only humans, not animals, that have mastered the optimization of that energy, and that’s why they are so special and rule the earth. And, he saw in each building and breaking wave a positive metaphor. “In my Splash series, that’s what I think about: that moment in time when a wave breaks and potential energy gets transformed to real energy.”

That same year, Manolis spent nine months painting in Key West. “I was analyzing two different things,” he said. “The water and the sunset. Both of those change daily. There’s no fauna and no flora on the seabed there. It’s just white sand, so it reflects the atmosphere. And if the atmosphere changes, the color of the water changes. So, every five or ten minutes the water is completely different. I’ve never seen a place that capricious.” Manolis also visited the museum in Key West dedicated to the bird painter, John James Audubon, because the difference between male and female coloration in the natural world is a source material of his. He was enchanted by a painting of a flamingo. It was pink. “Today, it’s a kind of salmon orange,” he said. “We know the water changed. We know that. So, I did a whole series of paintings in which over the surface of the work I went from pink to orange as the predominant color. They sold very well. Because the two colors together were really beautiful. Manolis has several ways of constructing a picture. They include splashes and pours that reference the first-generation Ab Exes; all-over pigmentation, his glazes and the small set of highly personal symbols, that he first used in the Tolerance series. The piece in the REDWORLD series included in the show is a highly personal work, as its subtitle, Self Portrait Quadriptych, indicates, and it combines several of the symbols, including concentrics and five parallel strokes. He describes the making of this REDWORLD with fastidious relish. “Think of an Oreo cookie,” he said. “I put five layers of glaze on. Then I put the symbols on. Then I put five more layers of glaze on. So, it’s ten layers. And the symbols are squeezed beneath. The total layer of glaze is probably only a fifteenth of an inch, but no matter how close you get to the painting, the symbols are inside.” For J. Steven Manolis, REDWORLD is about going for it; being fearless. Will that come across? No. Or not exactly. Any more than the viewer will know that the five parallel strokes on many of his canvases reference his five grandchildren. Or that his waves splash with human energy. “There’s no explicit messaging at all,” Manolis said. “There is implicit messaging. Supposedly, Hans Hofmann said that it’s not really important that the recipient feels exactly about the work as you do. But if your feelings can result in the recipient having feelings, if you are imparting emotions that result in emotions, they don’t have to be yours. And this is the ultimate test of really strong art.” The splendid art of J. Steven Manolis is exactly that. Each and every piece generates an energy that is at once explosively physical and evidence of a sharp mind at work. Like the birth of a world. —Anthony Haden-Guest is a British-American writer, reporter, cartoonist and art critic based in New York and London. ‘Financial Times’, ‘The Art Newspaper’, ‘Vanity Fair’ and ‘The Daily Beast’ are but a few of the notable publications that have carried his byline, and he is the author of ‘True Colors-The Real Life of the Art World’. HAT IS IT ABOUT

“rock stars?” They are a different species. Why is it when someone wields a guitar and plays it like an extension of their body, the world gasps a collective intake. Sexy, powerful, vibratory. They are masters of their own universe and musical language. Tom Morello (the Prophets of Rage/ Rage Against the Machine/ Audioslave/ The Nightwatchman guitarist/singer/songwriter) is one of these and he is reinventing sound. He is resuscitating the role of rock as a platform for revolution. His collaborative powerhouse of an album, The Atlas Underground, has just released on October 12th. Morello is a sonic steward. Pioneering the field of guitar communication, he takes guitar riffs from from one to multidimensional. Now, he is adding the technology of 2018 to analog, merging his soundsplitting vibrations of Marshall stack guitar amplification with a myriad of the NOW vocalists of rap and EDM. He is expanding horizons, his own along with ours. Listen up, wake up he shouts, “NOW!” Our world is tilted and artists have a responsibility to use their voices and instruments to break down boundaries, harness the power of the people and right the wrong directions of the powers that be. If he wasn’t a rockstar? Tom is convincing when he says he “would likely be a revolutionary guerilla or an animal rights activist.” His lifestyle and music are

about the potential we have to open our eyes and come together to stop the oblivion, the destruction, the inequality, the numbing. He is determined to “forge this new path.” The Atlas Underground hosts “a diverse ethnicity brought together in harmony and solidarity. I’m using my guitar as a weapon for change.” Tom taught himself to play guitar, starting late in the game, at age 17. He practiced techniques 8 hours a day in hopes of catching up with his guitar heroes. This became a game of follow-and-surpass-theleader as he was forced to excel by stretching and innovating outside of guitar norms. “We Don’t Need You” (featuring Vic Mensa), “Lucky One” (featuring K.Flay) and “Rabbit’s Revenge” (featuring Bassnectar, Big Boi and Killer Mike) are the first tastes of this album’s new signature sound and territory fusing together analog, EDM and rap. It’s no basic amuse bouche. These tracks say it all. The lyric, “Don’t lie to me!” rages and repeats through, “We Don’t Need You.” The message and power of the music will not be ignored. Tom wants all these voices brought together the same way he taught himself to yoke disparate sounds with his first guitar. Cofounder of Rage Against the Machine, current Prophets of Rage guitarist, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee (as well as committee member dedicated to giving metal its rightful place), Morello has many notches in his belt from that of activist to comic creator, from voice of the people to little league father and husband in his favorite down-time moments. He has played and created with the best over the years from Springsteen to Chris Cornell. The music world awaits and braces for this latest solo album, but it is far from a solo effort. He wants it to represent the urgency for the planet to come together, to fight for what is right and reveal with a gritty, honest lens what is going on behind doors, on the

Morello sent out his riffs to a fittingly elite and eclectic crew from Chicago rapper Vic Mensa, Knife party, Bassnectar, Big Boi, Killer Mike, Portugal the Man, Steve Aoki, Gary Clark Jr. and Pretty Lights, to name a few. He fires out his intention, “to create a sonic conspiracy with musicians from diverse backgrounds and genres but with a common purpose. Shredding fury merged with the electronic wizardry of 2018.” It is time to wake up he is telling us. Again. This is not his first attempt to raise the troops for the battle cry of our own salvation. The Atlas Underground represents a brand new tactic. “Social justice ghost stories. Heroes and martyrs of the past can speak” through this mix of past and present sound curation. Tom chooses to control his non-linear path to purpose. It is no coincidence that he is making sure this album is happening now. Does he read? “Oh you bet I read.” No surprise, there’s a diverse stack of lit on this eloquent guitar legend’s bedside. Tom Morello, guitarist of the apocalypse, believes in a future that is out of this world. He has to. Using his guitar riffs as synthesizer, he is splitting sound in the hopes of uniting us. Harvard grad, husband, little league dad, activist and axe-wielding rockstar. Get ready for The Atlas Underground. A futuristic battle cry to connect past and present. Tom Morello pushes himself; he pushes us. His unique sound bends, pulls, tears, tugs, scratches. Chains and unchains the listener with handcuffs of barbed wire to get our attention. The Atlas Underground has just enough seductive rhythm and lyrics to get us to sit down at the table and refuse to drink the sterilized water of current events before the sirens wail.

His artwork is a beautiful combination of his freedom of expression, raw energy, and boundless possibilities. With a style and focus that is ever evolving, Gerben’s artwork is highly sought after by art collectors and musical icons alike. Gerben has a style that cannot be categorized into one genre, nor would it do his art justice. His collections span from abstract to surrealism and jewelry to surfboards. A theme of Gerbens is to intriguingly transform images of popculture icons into colorful arrangements. His inspiration for his work stems from a multitude of stimuli, including musical influences such as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and AC/DC, but Gerben also finds inspiration from typically overlooked details of life. A spark of inspiration can come from anything and everything. It could be from a rust covered phone booth splashed with graffiti or the environmental erosion of a city -- all things of potential beauty that an untrained eye would overlook at first glance. This is what makes his art so unique yet somewhat familiar. There’s a basis behind most of his work that stems from life that we see everyday, but it takes the eye of an artist like Gerben to transform this stimuli into colorful, dramatic, rock ‘n’ roll-eqsue works of art.

What is it like when you have a new spark of inspiration or start a new project? I actually find I’m inspired by everything. I don’t know what it is but something sparks an idea, I get really excited about it and I go at it 100%. I’ll focus on it and flush out the idea until I feel that sense of satisfaction. Like with my jewelry, I

made a few items and it inspired me to create a larger line. I’ll hopefully be moving my line into diamond jewelry, earrings, rings, and cufflinks. And I don’t look at it so much as jewelry. I consider it to be wearable art. I’m not just trying to make jewelry, I’m making pieces of my art that can be carried around. There’s a certain joy about it for me, going out wearing one of my LOVE pendants and when someone asks what kind of art I make, I can show them that pendant and tell them that “it’s a miniature version of my LOVE sculpture.” What’s next for Paul Gerben? I’m going into more sophisticated museum art now, big hand-painted pieces and more fine art. I want to move into that realm of the museum world. I’d love to have my own museum showing with all of my work. So that’s where I’m hopefully headed and I’m excited for that. — Jamie Agoglia is a renowned writer, photojournalist, and entrepreneur. Master Artisan and Entrepreneur, Matt Conable, Tells of his Unrelenting Mission to Create Functional Knives, Jewelry and Accessories from Ancient Artifacts By Whitney Hubbell

ATT CONABLE, an artist, designer, entrepreneur, and businessman has been forging unique handcrafted tools, jewelry and accessories for men since 1997. The company name, William Henry, is derived from the middle names of original partners, Matthew William Conable and Michael Henry Honack. Matt sold the company to a private equity group in 2017, and now focuses all his energy fulfilling his role as Creative Director. The goal of William Henry is to produce unique and timeless pieces forged from exotic and precious materials (although exotic may be an understatement). The articles are fashioned from fossil mammoth tooth, mammoth tusk, dinosaur bone, meteorites, and fossil coral to name a few — some of which are over 100,000 years old. Each unique material is constructed into a one-of-a-kind opus that is more akin to art than accessory. But don’t let the gorgeous facade fool you — the extraordinary artifacts are all incredibly functional, a result of Matt’s mission to, “effectively transform the archetype of all tools into superb pieces of functional jewelry and accessories for men.” The collection now ranges from bracelets, writing instruments, money clips, cuff links, to key chains, but the brand launched with their award-winning pocket knives which continues to be the cornerstone of the brand.

The Kestrel 'Zephyr' features a 24K gold koftgari frame, inlaid with a mesmerizing scale in 100,000 year-old Fossil Coral. The blade is 'Wave' damascus with an extrastrong core in ZDP-189. The ‘Zephyr’ features some of the exotic materials, artistry, and hand-forged metals that are the hallmark of William Henry's collections; a timeless heirloom to be proudly worn and used for a lifetime before being handeddown to another generation. ($1,350)

His story began thirty years ago when Matt dropped out of college at 19 and got a job in a small knife shop on the coast of California. Matt explains, “I just wanted to be doing something with my hands that had some sense of permanence versus studying bold faced terms in college courses at the time. I never would have predicted that that would eventually lead me here.” He quickly picked up the knifemaking trade with help from shops owner, David Boyle; and together they produced rustic and highly functional knives. Simultaneously, Matt finished his college degree, “just in case I needed one” he adds, “...turns out I didn’t!” In his mid 20’s, the young craftsman moved to Arizona, intent to set up his own shop full of artisan knives. It was a oneman-operation and he was selling mostly direct-to-consumer at small arts and craft shows. Still, Matt was gaining exposure in the art world and by the time he was 25, he was juried into the Smithsonian and the same year, the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Matt describes, “In terms of American craft, I reached what looked like the pinnacle, at a young age. Everyone around me was one or two generations older.” But after analyzing the numbers, the young artist realized he was making less money than if he were waiting tables at a local restaurant. Matt decided the economics simply weren’t feasible to sustain a modest lifestyle or provide for a family. The California born knifemaker resolved to leave his days of being a struggling artist behind, and opted to move back to the Bay Area where he would apply for the best MBA programs in the country. As Matt puts it, “That was my plan — I was going to put on hard shoes and join the real world.” He had about eight months before grad school commenced and in the interim, needed money, so he sought after work in Silicon Valley. He obtained an offer in the now, tech-centric region, right before it was about to take off. Serendipitously, the night before he was to accept the job offer, Matt received a phone call that would alter the course of his life. Matt explains, “There was a message on my answering machine from a knife collector who had some of my work. He somehow found out that I was on my way out of knifemaking business. His middle name was Henry. My middle name is William and that’s eventually where the name came from.” Michael Henry Honack persuaded Matt to stick with his passion, and that is undeniable talent would inevitably pay off. Matt told Michael that he was willing to turn

down the job in Silicon Valley and spend the eight months before grad school to create a business model. Michael would cover Matt’s living expenses while he developed a business plan based off his experience in high-grade, custom caliber knives. And Matt also clarified that once grad school began, he may or may not want to continue with this entrepreneurial endeavor. Six months passed and Matt toiled away in a small studio apartment, the bumpers and grinders so close to his computer he had to cover it with a garbage bag to protect from the dust. “The biggest learning curve was the difference of making everything yourself by hand, which is inordinately slow and expensive, and takes a level of craft that’s hard to replicate — versus how do you do it at scale and what technologies are available to help.” By the time eight months passed, Matt had four solid designs and orders to fulfill throughout the year. This was all the persuasion the young entrepreneur needed. He realized, “Maybe I can do this. Maybe I don’t need to go to grad school and spend 100k, go into debt, put on hard shoes and become a cog in a big organization… maybe I can actually build something I believe in. So off we went.” Now, William Henry is a formidable force in the realm of men’s jewelry and accessories, and has a celebrity following of Brad Pitt, Harrison Ford and Pierce Brosnan, to name a few. Matt remains an artist at heart and thrives in the creative process, but also maintains his entrepreneurial spirit. He’s a little hard on himself as any good entrepreneur is, and says, “on one hand we’re doing well... look how far we’ve come since ’97! But on the other hand, look at a Jeff Bezos… he started Amazon at about the same time.” It’s no question that William Henry has come a long way. The company launched with less than 200 products, all of which were hand made by Matt, and today they are staffed with 45 people in a 6,400 square foot studio. The brand remains committed to hand-forging dramatic and detailed functional, wearable works of arts. And Matt Conable, the master craftsman remains focused on the creative elements of the business. “It went from, as any business does when you’re starting me doing everything to gradually pocketing myself more and more into the creative role. The designer, the process engineer, the troubleshooter, still the macro-level master craftsmen that hopefully the shop and the system can look to for solution. And people told me I couldn’t do it!”

The Morpheus is the world’s first luxury pendant knife, created to be worn on the neck or carried in the pocket. Inlaid with 10,000 year old fossil mammoth tooth, and features a hidden, state-of-theart blade made from 'Boomerang' damascus steel. ($1,675)

Originally built in 1943, the hotel is nearing the final phase of an expansion. The new wing, located on Mason Street, will combine Spanish Revival architecture and a new design vision for the interiors. New guest rooms and suites will feature modern Spanish Colonial furnishing emphasized by tall ceilings and sun-bleached walnut. Hints of Pacific blue and Hermes-inspired tangerine will lend visual texture and style. Sun Valley Heli Ski Idaho

Come enjoy the spectacular Idaho backcountry with Sun Valley Heli Ski. Located in historic Sun Valley, SVHS has exclusive helicopter access to an amazing playground of 750,000 square acres, which is by far the largest heli terrain in the lower 48 states. Their intimate state of the art helicopter will be your chariot as you ascend over the majestic mountain peaks of the Smoky, Boulder, Pioneer and Soldier Mountains in the Idaho backcountry. SVHS’s legendary powder terrain offers runs for intermediate and expert skiers and riders. You will feel your heart pumping as the helicopter lifts off and you begin your journey. You will find yourself glued to the windows as you gently gain altitude and go eye to eye with the mountains as you rise with them. At cruising altitude, you will be awed by the majesty and immenseness of the Idaho mountains. The helicopter will then begin its final descent (“the short and final,” as the guides call it), where it will typically circle around once or twice and then descend on the top of the world. The excitement, views and camaraderie are second to none. Now, the best part: You are about to go ski untracked legendary Idaho powder for the rest of the day! Sun Valley Heli is the oldest heli ski operator in the United States and a member of Heli Ski US. It offers full and half day heli skiing and riding as well as private charters. It also offers heli assisted ski touring and scenic flights. In addition to all that, SVHS provides customized tour packages that incorporate heli skiing and riding with other winter adventures, such as resort skiing, snowmobiling,

cross country skiing, ski touring, rock and ice climbing and other activities. Sun Valley Heli’s runs range from 1,500 to 3,000 feet of pristine Idaho powder. Their guests fly in an A-Star B3E, the unquestioned king of helicopters for helicopter skiing. Groups are small with an intimate guest to guide ratio of 4:1. All heli skiers and riders are provided with Mammut RAS Rocker 18L air-packs and brand-new state of the art Barryvox avalanche transceivers. The current team of guides is unsurpassed in offering over 100 years of collective backcountry, avalanche and guiding experience. This is a testimony to the level of dedication and professionalism that makes SVHS a preeminent U.S. heli ski operation. Personal service is the trademark of SVHS. A full day of heli skiing and riding includes six runs per person per day of Idaho pow. The day starts in Sun Valley Heli Ski’s office with a PowerPoint presentation that describes the experience you will have that day. The first group will often ride the Challenger Chairlift up to the peak of Sun Valley’s Bald Mountain, where they will be picked by the helicopter, typically in front of gawking and envious Sun Valley skiers and riders. Needless to say, this is an awesome experience. Once in the field, the six runs allow SVHS’s guests to experience the diversity of SVHS’s massive terrain. This includes gentle ridge top lines for warm up runs and intermediate skiers, open cirques and bowls, trees and gladed skiing and other high alpine terrain features. Extra runs are available for an additional

Guests can view these majestic vistas in a lens that can only be experienced from the sky. Snowmass Snowmass is massive: 96 Trails, 3,332 acres of terrain, and 4,406 vertical feet of skiing and riding. From the gladed trees of Burnt Mountain and the expert couloirs in Hanging Valley to miles of intermediate cruisers like Sneaky’s and dedicated beginner areas, Snowmass truly has it all. For little ones, The Treehouse Kids Adventure Center rolls out the red carpet with custom themed playrooms like the Bear Den, and the swooping turns of the new Breathtaker mountain coaster offer endless giggles for all ages. Throw in the varying terrain parks and the hundreds of topnotch ski and snowboard school pros, and you have the perfect package for winter vacation bliss. Aspen Mountain Rising above the bustling energy of downtown Aspen, this is where it all began in 1946 with the single-seat Lift 1, which immediately became the longest chairlift in the world. More than 70 years later, Aspen remains a bucket-list ski resort for many. The main entry point to skiing or riding Aspen is the prominent Silver Queen Gondola that zips snow sports enthusiasts to the top of the mountain in under 15 minutes. Skiers and riders are then greeted with quick and easy access to over 3,000 vertical feet of terrain. Bell Mountain delivers Hollywood lines under the gondola with plenty of options for tree skiing, glades and bumps. Picnics and parties can be spotted at Buckhorn Cabin as skiers and riders zip by. Over on the right side of the mountain, the ‘Dumps’ supply a powder pocket heaven amongst glistening Aspen trees. For speedsters, carving a turn on the iconic America’s Downhill race course, host to World Cup ski racing for decades, is a must. Aspen Mountain might look small, but it skis big. Aspen Highlands Adored by locals and elite skiers and riders, Aspen Highlands has a duct-tape-to-diamonds vibe best understood by comparing two of its most famous gems: Highland Bowl and Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro. Highland Bowl is accessed by a 45-minute hike to the top of Highland Peak, where skiers and riders are greeted by a panorama punctuated by the towering Maroon Bells and Pyramid Peak. The Bowl then delivers expansive, expert terrain extending close to 2,500 vertical feet of pure heaven. Meanwhile, Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro offers up equal parts elegance and raucous fun with an afternoon ski-in-dance-out après ski scene that is unmatched. While Highlands may be defined by those outsize experiences, there’s more: a surprising amount of intermediate terrain on the lower mountain.

Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro is a legendary for a reason: channeling authentic European Alpine culture in a warm, welcoming environment, it also happens to have the most boisterous après ski scene on any mountain in North America. During the 2015-16 season, the iconic restaurant was completely remodeled. Lunch service feels like a slice of Switzerland in the Rocky Mountains with layered helpings of fondue and raclette as well as steak tartare, caviar and delectable daily specials. The wine list includes an ever-changing array of international varieties and fine champagne. For dessert: strudel, anyone? As everyone’s attention shifts from lunch to après ski, things really kick into high gear. On sunny days, the south-facing deck at Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro regularly plays host to ski-boot dance parties that just happen, as flutes of champagne, glasses of fine wine and a bevy of cocktails create a jovial atmosphere.
