Dear Village School,
family and Friends, On Your Mark, Get Set,...GO, KNIGHTS! Greetings, fellow Knights and Friends. The day we submitted our “Tracking our Success” magazine for printing, I stood with colleagues and students to cheer on the five varsity student-athletes who qualified for the State Track & Field Competition. That is extraordinary! Bella Adams ‘24 headed to State Competition for the second year and was joined by teammates Lauren Lappin ‘24, Emma Garner ‘26, and Mylee Van de Wouw ‘26 in the 4x800 relay race. Bella will also compete in the individual 800m race again this year. What a difference a Track makes! This new facility has already improved the quality of our athletic program. Let’s take a moment to “Track our Success…”
donors. But, there is more work to be done. We want to complete the project by building a concession stand and restrooms and installing lights to illuminate both the track and soccer field. We need to raise another $1.2MM to make these improvements happen for our students. We encourage every family to make a gift to the “On Track for our Future” Campaign. If we all contribute, we can get it done once again!

Seven months in the making, the TVS Track is the catalyst for the surge in student-athlete competitors running this spring! Our TVS Track is top of the line, on par with many designs found at the collegiate level, featuring an all-weather, 8-lane, 400-meter synthetic track. If you haven’t had a chance to see the track in person, I hope you will prioritize it soon.

Great M A K ING
Strides
The 2021-22 school year will always be remembered as one of great strides! The biggest events to mark the year were those surrounding the development of the Track and Field facility on the south end of the TVS campus. It started in September with breaking ground and ended in mid March with the ribbon cutting ceremony. This facility will be the cornerstone of the athletics program for years to come, attracting people to our campus and school for our excellent academics and athletic programs. The Track and Field hosted a handful of smaller scale intrasquad meets for Lower School, Middle School & Varsity Track teams throughout the spring. One of the highlights for us was hosting the Lower School league championship.
Other high points the year were multiple spirit nights around our Girls Varsity Volleyball team. Those consisted of Neon Knight, a Western Themed Knight, and a Black and Gold Knight. We also had the privilege of hosting the first round of the district tournament. Girls Varsity Cross Country had a remarkable season in the fall. They were the first team in TVS history to qualify for the state meet. They traveled up to Tallahassee to compete against the other top teams in the state for our class. In Varsity Swimming, we had a swimmer qualify for the regional swim meet in the 100m breaststroke. This was our first swimmer in TVS history to qualify for regionals. In the winter, we had our first victories in both Boys Varsity Soccer and Girls Varsity Soccer. Our girls MS Basketball team played in their league championship game. In the spring, we fielded our first Varsity Baseball team who won their first 2 games. We had our Girls Varsity Tennis team put a player into the finals in their singles bracket at the district tournament. And our boys Varsity Tennis team played strong in their first year of eligibility at the district level.
Our Varsity Track and Field teams competed strong throughout the season. They placed 9 athletes into the regional meet after they qualified with strong showings at the district level. The numbers of all of our programs grew significantly this year. We thought we might have 6 swimmers this fall, we had 25. We thought we would have 4 golfers, we had 15. We had 2 teams in Girls MS Volleyball. We saw the Lower School track program more than double in size. We had growth in basketball, in the soccer programs, in the track and field programs, and in the tennis programs. Another highlight for the program overall, is the continued link between the 3 levels here at The Village School. Our varsity athletes continue to work with and lead our middle and lower school athletes by leading clinics and skills sessions.

Cheering ON THE
Knights
T
he Village School Cheerleading team started in 2015 with two parent Volunteers and one TVS teacher who had a dream and goal. Now, in 2022 the cheer program has grown into a multi division sport with a varsity high school team, a middle school team and a lower school development clinic. I have been with the program since its inception, starting out as a volunteer and then quickly moved up to be head coach. In January of 2019, we had one team but the interest in cheerleading was soaring. I brought on Sarah Germain
as a volunteer to help kick start the Jr. Cheerleading Clinic, a program designed to teach Lower school students what it means to be a cheerleader. After the success and popularity of the clinic I asked Sarah Germain to come on as a cocoach. Together we developed a middle school team and a high school Varsity team. As coaches we work our team hard and have high expectations for them. Many people do not see cheerleading as a sport. We have made it our goal to prove that our team is athletic, competitive and deserves to be in the “sport” category. One look at our team at a basketball game or Pep Rally, you’ll see for yourself that cheerleading takes talent and hard work. There is no “I” in Team. We work just like a Football team, everyone has a position and is valuable. Several of the girls have been in cheer since the team was being developed. We have become a family. We encourage our squad to lean on us for support and lean on each other. We do team bonding exercises, team retreats, and summer camp. We always tell our team that they are the spirit of the school. They are the role models. We hold them to that standard and they respect that and follow that standard. All of these aspects bring us closer together and inevitably, makes us a strong team.
This school year at UCA camp in Weston, Florida, we received the “Leadership Award”. This award is given to one team at each camp that displays many of the Christ Skills that The Village School holds dear. Our proudest accomplishment as coaches was receiving that honor. Watching our girls become a talented, advanced level team while still remaining a big family that respects and loves each other is indescribable.
We are so proud of the program and are excited to see what the future holds for TVS’s athletic program and our cheerleading team, but one thing is certain, as coaches we will always be the cheerleaders’ biggest cheerleaders.

Arts Year Review IN
W
hat an exciting year we’ve had in the Arts Department! We are so blessed to have Culinary, Visual and Performing Arts all represented here at TVS! Our students truly shine in each area as they are instructed by talented teachers who are masters at their craft and instill passion in each student. The new Tayon Drama Studio was the home of many performances this year; 42nd Street, Check Please, Singin’ in the Rain and a Thespian Showcase were all featured in this new space! A Charlie Brown Christmas Musical and our annual K-12 Christmas Concert were showcased on the NNC stage, sharing the spirit of Christmas with all. In the Spring, all three departments collaborated to bring the Spring into the Arts festival to TVS during the month of April. This was a month-long festival tying together the Culinary, Visual and Performing Arts departments. We kicked
off the month with Art Splash!, a beautiful evening showcasing student musicians, an Art Gallery opening, food made by our culinary students, and Art Improv! The rest of the month was filled with on stage performances; ECE, K-5 and MS/US Spring Concerts, Singin’ in the Rain, a Thespian Showcase and our grand finale was the performance of Beauty and the Beast. The Performing Arts Department closed the school year with a performance of 101 Dalmatians featuring fourth and fifth grade students. We applauded our Middle School and Upper School Thespians for their many Superior and Excellent ratings they received at Districts and States. We are so proud of these shining stars! This also included our Upper School sweeping State Thespians with all Superior ratings. K-12 Visual Arts students have not only had their art work displayed on campus during our Arts Festival, but also in the Naples community. The Baker Museum as well as Wiggins Pass Art Exhibit showcased our talented artists! Lower school students won 1st, 2nd and a people’s choice award and we are so proud.
In our Culinary department, our taste buds ignite as we enter the upper school and pass by the test kitchen where our culinary students create delicious food even our photography students can use as a muse for their food photography.
TVS is rich with talent that is shared with not only our school community, but outside our school walls and we are proud to celebrate each unique gift that lives inside our students!

Admissions Update
It is a very exciting time to be at The Village School! From the 20-21 school year to the 21-22 school year we experienced an enrollment growth of 10% across all divisions with a whopping 570 students enrolled.
The Upper School grew by 20% and we look forward to 136 high schoolers this coming fall.
The first day of school during the 20-21 school year saw a retention rate of 86%, as of May 3rd we have already surpassed that number and have 89% of students returning to The Village School this fall.
Our goal for the opening day of the 22-23 school year is to reach 90% retention. We are averaging 10-15 tours per week and are well on our way to an enrollment of 600 students for the upcoming school year.

As I reflect on 2020-2021, I am immensely proud of our Village School Community. When the threat of the ongoing pandemic loomed large, Dennis Chapman aptly led our faculty, administration, and parents on a path to ensure the most desirable and consistent education for our students, keeping us “Together, Vibrant & Safe” all the while. The courage of our TVS community, the support shown not only to the school, but to one another, continues to be what sets us apart from other independent schools. Your trust in us is key to our success. Throughout the challenges we faced last year, we were blessed with the knowledge that students were in their classrooms, receiving an inspired education in a faithful and loving setting. With full support of the Board of Trustees, Dennis and his team embarked on an exciting venture with the introduction of our $3 million ”On Track for our Future” Capital Campaign, designed to both renovate the Upper School and build an 8-lane all-weather track and field facility. Thank you for making the campaign a priority. It is because of generous donors like you that the Upper School renovations are complete and the construction of the track is underway.

to introduce the 2020-2021 Gratitude Report. The names, photos, and information on the following pages are a testament to you because all of us play a role in the growth of The Village School. Every year we are humbled by the generosity of our parents, families, and friends. In fiscal year 2020-2021, during a time of compromise and uncertainty, we are fortunate that our community was kept safe through the excellent guidance of our Board of Trustees and the TVS Medical Task Force. How lucky we are that you have entrusted your children’s education to The Village School. We are forever TVS - Together, Vibrant and Safe! What a wonderful day it was when, after such a long hiatus, students were together again in their classroom, happy to be with their teachers and friends. As a parent, I felt strongly that my own children and those in our community needed to be back at our school where they are motivated to learn and gain confidence in the knowledge they are known, nurtured, and loved. Many of you may remember that my 2020-2021 word of the year was “pivot.” TVS had to be ready to make adjustments and reimagine classroom space, programs, and events for the safety of the community. Our teachers and staff showed incredible ingenuity as they adapted to the new normal, with students’ needs always of the greatest importance. Yet, while there were challenges, there were also many successes. Of considerable note is our first outdoor Christmas Holiday Concert on the lawn, where the Performing Arts Department produced an amazing program for families and guests with all grades represented! TVS also sent its first athlete to the State Track Meet, and both the Middle and Upper School theater students won high praise at the Florida Thespian Competitions. The Village FUN Challenge took off with a
bang, and the second grade classes reached an astounding 98% participation in giving to the annual fund! Last, but certainly not least, The Village School was honored to graduate the Class of 2021, fondly known as “The Sweet Sixteen.” Always on the cutting edge, this year parents spearheaded not one, not two, but three fundraising events to support our school, Le Cirque de Village, Nashville Knight Under the Stars, and the Knight Golf Classic! Plus, under new leadership, the Village School Parent Association (VSPA) rallied to engage our parents and build a stronger community. Thank you to our Board of Trustees for their commitment and support of our school. Truly unsung heroes, the Trustees are hard-working volunteers whose goal is to ensure that The Village School of Naples remains mission-driven and on a path to sustainable growth. I hope you enjoy reading our 2020-2021 Gratitude Report and see first hand how extraordinary things can happen when we work together. Just look around! We are indeed a blessed community.

What I like best about The Village School is its kinder, gentler en-
I’ve been a part of The Village School of Naples for eight years as a parent of two TVS students, and as the S.T.R.E.A.M. and Innovation Coach. Both positions offer unique perspectives. As a parent, I couldn’t be happier with the gentle guidance and caring given to not only my own children, but to all students. Children really are “known, nurtured, and loved” at The Village School, and I believe it makes a difference in how our children learn. As a teacher, I feel supported and encouraged to stretch beyond normal curriculum, to move to the next level in learning and dive into robotics, 3D printing, laser cutting, and more through our Innovation Classes. This flexibility allows students to tap into their passions, often new-found passions, that are exciting to witness. From the youngest preschoolers to our most inquisitive upperclassmen, I am honored to mentor our students as they explore the possibilities of the 21st Century.

TVS welcomes K9 Colby Students and families were introduced to a K9 Colby when school began in August of 2019 and it was love at first sight! K9 Colby is the working companion to Officer Daniel Bledsoe and she is not only adorable, she is super-smart, too! The Village School is committed to keeping its campus out of harm’s way and was grateful when a generous donor made it possible for us to partner with Skool Dogs Inc., a private organization that specifically trains canines to serve schools and universities, providing an additional level of security.
Officer Daniel completed a rigorous instructional boot camp to learn how to continue training with K9 Colby. Both Daniel and Colby will undergo annual recertification to maintain the level of competency necessary for program safety and sustainability. The Village School is honored to be the first school in Florida and only the third school in the USA to implement this program on campus.

The following scholarships and/or awards were established in Fiscal Year 2020-2021, and can be found on the TVS website. The Louis B. Kopp Scholarship One (1) $5,000 scholarship awarded annually. set our “On Track” campaign up for success in a MILLION ways!
Our TVS Track & Field was brought to life in 2021-2022. How did this happen? It happened because many in our community believed strongly that the need to grow our athletic programs was important for the overall wellness of our school. One such member, Pat Brady, is a believer. In 2017, Pat knew that he had found something special when he enrolled his children in The Village School of Naples. Not only did they thrive academically, but socially as well. The Bradys became friendly with a number of families and settled into Knight Life. Brady's transformative gift of $1 million created the momentum necessary to build a successful campaign. While at first anonymous, Pat has agreed to come forward to share the "why" behind his gift.

Knight Golf Classic Under the direction of chairperson Sarah Germain P’26,’30,’33, the Knight Golf Classic was held at the beautiful Vanderbilt Country Club. Parents, trustees, and friends joined together bright and early on Saturday, May 15, 2021 for the annual scramble to raise funds for TVS’s Athletic Program. After cancellations and postponements from 2020, an amazing reimagined “Nashville Knight Under the Stars” Gala was celebrated in full regalia at The Naples Beach & Golf Resort on Friday, April 23, 2021. Under the direction of Event Chair Jenny Urness and her team, guests were invited to dine and dance the night away with The Ben Allen Band. Even the Middle & Upper School Steel Bands performed! Our volunteers play a vital role in welcoming families and providing opportunities for engagement in our community. Futures
ON T HE COLLEGE FRON T I often hear it. “My child has a full-ride to attend a state university because they have Florida Bright Futures!” Unfortunately, this is a common misconception. Each year, Florida seniors have to decide which college they will attend by May 1st, and the Bright Futures Scholarship monies will play a critical role in their decisions. While Bright Futures will not fully fund the cost to attend a Florida university, it does significantly reduce the cost of college for Florida families.
Parents do not have to qualify based on income - Bright Futures is awarded strictly on the student’s “merit,” rewarding their hard work. What a great way to motivate our young people! The highest Bright Futures award amount will cover 100% tuition and fees at any Florida state university – roughly $6,800 per year. What is not covered is books, housing or food (room and board). Those costs are about $14,000 per year!
As Executive Director of Quest for Success for over 25 years, I have worked closely with thousands of local high school students and their families. We tell them early on during high school how they can qualify for the Bright Futures Scholarship:
Consequently, a student will never have a “full ride” to attend a state university from their Bright Futures award.

Sounds confusing? It can be. Throw in a student applying to a private college, either in-state or out-of-state, and things become even more complicated, with in-depth financial information required. Each year, navigating the financial aid process to pay for college becomes just a bit more complicated.

Paying for college is like a financial puzzle, and every piece is significant.
Here are a few key pieces of advice I share with my students and families: Start early! I inform my Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior families as to exactly what the Bright Futures requirements are. Prior to the student’s Senior year, I work with those families one-on-one, educating them as to the financial aid policies of the colleges and universities to which their son or daughter may be applying. Know well in advance the required financial aid forms from the colleges to which your child is applying (FAFSA, CSS Profile and IDOCS). Make note of when they are due. Understand the direct costs (tuition, fees, housing, food) that are payable directly to the college or university. Be aware that the direct costs to the college are due about 30 days before the start of each semester. You do not pay for the full year all at one time. You can ask the institution if you can split the direct costs into monthly payments. Also understand the incidental or indirect costs (books, transportation, parking fees, computer etc.) Set a budget for how much money your son or daughter will have going out with friends. Proactively communicate with your child, ensuring they understand any limits you may have as to what you can afford to spend on their college education.
Slightly more than 50 percent of all graduating seniors in Florida qualify for Bright Futures. Of the students I work with, over 80 percent qualify. By planning ahead, you can place your child in a strong position to achieve success in their future. Moving forward, I hope the State Legislature keeps this significant financial puzzle piece in place. Families of college-age students are fortunate to have the opportunity for their child to qualify for the Bright Futures to ease the burden of paying for college, while rewarding students’ proactive engagement in their future.
