iane and Sid Davis enjoy sharing with The Naples Players. Diane teaches, acts, and works alongside staff and volunteers in shaping the direction of the organization. Diane embraces the sense of belonging she experiences in teaching students at The Naples Players. “I enjoy gratification and pleasure seeing actors in my classes grow in directions they hadn’t expected, acquiring self-confidence, and learning to trust themselves and me,” Diane said. “We have our ups and downs, our goals, and it’s all about everyone joining together to make it the best it can be.” Meanwhile Sid builds sets, served on the Board of Directors, and hosts preview events for membership. “It’s been especially rewarding to create sets and see the end results on stage, enjoying the camaraderie and friendships through the years,” Sid said.
“It feels good to participate in an organization that is for the community and by the community.”

January 14 - February 18, 2020 $50 for 6 week session. $10 drop-in. This class is Improv for people with Parkinson’s Disease and their caregivers. Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a movement disorder that affects up to 1 million people in the US and doctors diagnose 60,000 new cases each year. Improvisational Theatre Games, based on the work of Viola Spolin, are being used clinically over the world. Improv classes are being offered for stress management and coping with the challenges of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease. Neuroscience tells us that play, when combined with the trust building of improv exercises, builds “pro-social brains that know how to interact with others in positive ways.” This is important for adults who are dealing with significant physical and emotional difficulties.

MATCHING CHALLENGE RAISES FUNDS
T
his past holiday season, Theresa Bill (affectionately known in the theatre as “T.Bill”), challenged our community to raise a hundred thousand dollars for The Naples Players by pledging to match each dollar donated with one of her own. T.Bill—a longtime Naples Players volunteer, former board member, Edna F. Springer Unsung Member Award Recipient, and Life Member—generously announced her pledge just before Thanksgiving. “It was as bold as it was generous,” Executive Artistic Director Bryce Alexander said. “It really served to motivate people in our community—from our longtime members and volunteers to first-time patrons.”

Having served in a volunteer capacity with The Naples Players for over thirty years onstage and off, T.Bill understands firsthand the important impact the theater makes within our community. “The Naples Players began as a reflection of our community’s artistic aspirations. Since, the organization has become a symbol that defines our culture,” she said. “Supporting this work reinforces our collective identity and strengthens the very fabric of our society.” With past experiences of playing alongside Harrison Ford and other major performers in theatres nationally, T.Bill’s support of The Naples Players provides integrity to the local arts community.

2019 In Review
A RECORD-BREAKING YEAR
SETTING A HIGH BAR 2019 began with a record-setting $1.3 million dollars raised at the 65th Anniversary Sapphire Soiree in January. More than 350 patrons, performers, staff, and volunteers poured their time, energy, and support into the event as hosts and season sponsors Tanya and Denny Glass led the philanthropic crowd by example. But the entire crowd was moved to tears when Patty and Jay Baker generously pledged $1 million dollars in alternating $100,000 increments. In turn the other attendees continued to pledge another $300,000 to support TNP’s mission and impact.

STRATEGIC GROWTH IN PROGRAMMING AND EDUCATION With the bar set high, the remainder of 2019 saw countless opportunities to further our connection to the Naples community. Explosive growth in education and wellness through the year led to the unique shift of key staff to continue to serve the increased demand. Former Director of Education, Craig Price, took on a new role as Director of Community Education and Wellness; narrowing his focus to further develop the inclusive, wellness, and specialty programs offered at the theater and throughout the community. The addition of well-known theater veteran

MEANINGFUL PARTNERSHIPS
On the stage, 2019 saw record-setting ticket sales, season subscriptions, and sold out performances. Even with the seasonal nature of Naples and Southwest Florida, shows that ran in predominantly slower times of the year were sold out in record time. Amazingly, almost 60% of our annual operating budget now comes from ticket sales. With 84% of
TNP has always relied on the generosity of individual and corporate partnerships to sponsor shows, events, and activities. In 2019, we expanded our focus on partnerships to demonstrate how our mission aligns and supports other non-profit organizations in our community. Meaningful partnerships with more than two dozen local organizations blossomed in the past year, strengthening the community as a whole. Most prominently, our Wellness Through the Arts classes are a growing opportunity to bring the healing powers of theatre to organizations like StarAbility Foundation, David Lawrence Center, and Collier County Public Schools.

A Legacy of Love HONORING THE LATE BOB HILL
When Barbara passed in 2016, Bob continued to volunteer and serve The Naples Players as deeply as he ever had. When Bob wasn’t onstage, he volunteered behind the scenes as a spot light operator, on the backstage crew, as a sound board operator, and was a regular in the scene shop.

ob Hill joined The Naples Players in 2000 with his wife Barbara, with the plan to volunteer as ushers. But they jumped in with both feet and quickly became staples at The Naples Players. “The camaraderie and support of the friends at The Naples Players made my parents’ life have laughter, love, and experience lasting friendships,” remembers daughter Jennifer Hill Holterman.

His acting skill landed him roles in Annie Get Your Gun, Broadway Bound, Much Ado About Nothing, and for kids of all ages, as Farmer Brown in Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that Type; just to name a few. Perhaps his most unforgettable role was as “the stage manager” in The 1940’s Radio Hour, where Bob opened and closed the show as a curmudgeonly but lovable stage manager.

Bob’s son Andrew Hill, an area investment advisor, said that he tried to work with his father to create a legacy plan. “He kept putting it off and we never got around to it,” Andrew said. “So, when he passed without an estate plan our family had to figure things out.” Although these matters tend to be difficult for families, Andrew and his sisters knew theatre was in Bob’s heart. Making an estate gift to

The Naples Players was an easy decision. “We are excited to honor our father’s commitment to The Naples Players with an estate gift,” Andrew said. In turn, The Naples Players is honoring Bob by renovating and renaming the green room in his honor. Now Bob’s legacy will be enjoyed and remembered by all Naples Players taking center stage.

Who is
Playwright Sean Grennan is easily described as a kind of show business Renaissance Man. A Chicago native, he was an English major at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Not only has he several plays to his credit in addition to Making God Laugh ( The Tin Woman, Now and Then, Married Alive, Beer for Breakfast, As Long As We Both Shall Live) , he’s also been a lyricist, a librettist, and has had an acting career that includes roles in The Untouchables, Law and Order SVU, Rudy, and Law and Order - Criminal Intent. Sean Grennan PLAYWRIGHT, MAKING GOD LAUGH TNP: Where did your inspiration for the
play originate?
SG: I was walking the dog one day thinking about how we all make plans and how they don’t always (rarely) work out exactly as we had hoped. Not that we “failed” but that life sent us down a different path. It seems to me that how we respond to those changes is really the measure of our character and our success. I was also thinking about how I was out of poop bags.
TNP: Did you and your family use humor relating to one another? Who were the “funny ones”?
SG: My dad was a loving, very funny man, a local TV celeb in Chicago when I was growing up.... He had to work long hours when we were young. Sometimes we wouldn’t see him ‘til the weekend or maybe at a few meals. I think we sort of “competed” for his attention. Around the table at our house, there was no better way to get that attention than having a great sense of humor. Once I realized that, I focused on it like a laser. For a long time, I was so annoying...

TNP: You dedicated Making God Laugh to Bill “Pop” Santen. What is your relationship with Bill?
SG: Bill was my father-in-law, and I based a lot of the story on him. He was a wonderful, kind, loving man who was always happiest at family gatherings with his wife and four daughters (I lucked out and married the oldest one. She has classic oldest-child syndrome...) Like Bill in the play, he worked for the post office for most of his career. In the most positive way, Bill kept it simple. He wasn’t concerned about how big his car was or about his status; his family was his greatest achievement and his greatest joy. As a result of Bill’s influence, I truly realize that being happy – being with someone who loves and respects you; having good, kind friends; perhaps children (and a dog!); and feeling fulfilled by those things – that’s far better success than any bank account or fame. We’re only here for a minute, and being happy is the real goal. Continued on page 42

SG: My family is pretty scattered now, but when we can get a few of us together, it’s likely to be at Christmas. Growing up, there were a few food disasters that took a long time to fade from memory: one was vegetable mornay that I still can’t talk about! The fantasia dip came from there. And, of course, Ruthie would cling fast to anything that seemed like a tradition, no matter what.
SG: Most of all, I hope they see themselves in the show. All families are not alike, but some things are universal. Time takes on all of us. No one gets a pass. I hope audiences remember some stuff from the thirty years that pass during the show and that their memories are fond, bittersweet, and maybe make them a little reflective. And I really hope people laugh...’cause you know God is!

THE “FAMILY” OF MAKING GOD LAUGH
W
hile the actors behind this winter’s Making God Laugh are not actually related, they care for one another as a family does — forging a strong relationship and bond through their mutual appreciation of one another and the theatre.
James Duggan starred opposite Walck in Maple and Vine and worked with both her and JamieLynn Bucci on These Shining Lives. Duggan credits them and the show’s ensemble with elevating his abilities and his own opinion of himself.
With the Making God Laugh cast comprised of returning performers, Director Jessica Walck has built a personal bond with each cast member over the years.
“Volunteering with them and others at The Naples Players for over five years has allowed me to cultivate and enjoy relationships and connections made through sharing my passion for theatre.” Duggan isn’t the only one who feels grateful. His sentiment is repeated by other performers show after show.
“Directing Jerry Rannow and Debi Garnett in Kalamazoo was a highlight in my directing career; as well as working with James Duggan on Don’t Dress for Dinner. His timing and physical comedy brought so much to that show,” Walck said. “Audiences talk about their love for these performances all the time, and it wouldn’t be possible without each actor’s chemistry onstage.” “And working with JamieLynn Bucci is a dream come true for any director. She brings such richness to her characters—she is by far one of our finest actors. The Naples Players also lends itself a fresh start for those new to the area. After retiring to Naples from a wildly successful career in television, Jerry Rannow continues following his love for the arts at the theater. It was there he met his good friend Debi Garnett, a thirty-year Naples Player and Life Member. Jerry appreciates the time he spent opposite Debi in Kalamazoo and loves playing opposite her once again in Making God Laugh. “She’s generous, she’s funny, she’s one in a million,” he said. “She’s an honor to know on stage and off.”
Meanwhile, Debi Garnett’s rich history with the organization and its members informs her role as matriarch on and off the stage. “I got involved by answering a casting call for open auditions of 1987’s Cabaret,” Garnett said. “Since, I’ve volunteered doing set décor, set construction, costumes, producing, acting, fundraising, play reading, and ushering.” Garnett even held a leadership position on the organization’s Board of Directors as it built The Naples Players’ permanent home on 5th Avenue South.

When not performing, she specializes in wig and makeup design (She Kills Monsters) and has worked throughout Italy teaching English through improvisation and theater. CREW BIOGRAPHIES Dot Auchmoody (Costume Designer) is celebrating her 18th season as the Resident Costume Designer for The Naples Players. She is enjoying working with this cast and Jessica to create this memory of people we know or have known in our lives. Always, a special thanks the crew in the shop that keep us all in laughter, baked goods and chocolate. It’s so much fun to work with friends! Kenzie Currie (Stage Manager) is from Minneapolis, MN. She graduated in 2018 with her degree in Integrated Strategic Communications and Theatre Arts from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire. She previously worked at The Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis, Millbrook Playhouse in Pennsylvania, and Chicago Shakespeare Theatre in Illinois. She is delighted to bring this show full circle, having been the stage manager for its Readers Theatre presentation last fall. Lori H. Ersolmaz (Properties) is an award-winning visual storyteller, multimedia content producer, collaborator, curator and media outreach professional. Her work has been screened at Anthology Film Archives, the Weisman Art Museum, and at International film festivals and events held in Australia, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Mexico, Nepal and Slovakia.
Starlet Jacobs (Scenic Designer) received an MFA in Scenic Design from UCLA and a BA in Music and Art from University of Washington. Her Set Design credits at The Naples Players include Bell, Book & Candle, Don’t Dress for Dinner, White Christmas, Charles Ives Take Me Home, and Miracle on 34th St. She lives and works in NYC as a set designer and as an art director for film and TV. Sapphira Koerner (Assistant to the Director) is from Upstate New York. She is a recent graduate from SUNY Oneonta with a dual degree in Theatre and Africana and Latino studies. She recently directed A Raisin in the Sun and a staged reading of Topdog/Underdog at her alma mater. She is grateful to The Naples Players for allowing her to both explore working as scenic intern and assistant directing.
Bradley Van Houten (Sound Designer) is celebrating his 7th season at TNP. Brad has his bachelor’s degree in Theatre: Design & Technical Production and Theatre: Stage Management from Western Michigan University. Having the pleasure of working Off-Broadway on Soul Doctor and internationally at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Brad is happy to be working at a theatre where everyday brings on a new challenge. In his time at TNP he has worked on over 80 productions. Select previous credits include Mamma Mia!, Peter and the Starcatcher, Chicago, Maple and Vine, She Kills Monsters, Sister Act, Rocky Horror Show, The 39 Steps, Something’s Afoot, and Good People. Craig Walck (Lighting Designer) after initially working for TNP from 2000-2006, Craig returned to TNP in 2011 after a five-year absence, during which he worked for Columbia University, The All-Stars Project, and other theatrical groups in New York City from 2006-2008. He then oversaw the completion of construction, opening, and first two years of operation of the Miramar Cultural Center, in Miramar, FL from 2008-2011. Overall, Craig has designed the lighting for over 150 TNP productions. Originally from Niagara Falls, N.Y., and a graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo, he once again calls Naples his home with his wife, Jessica, and their kids (dogs) Ziggy, Twoey, and Roscoe. Jessica Walck (Director, Properties) has been an active member of The Naples Players since 2004 and now serves as the organization’s Associate Artistic Director. She feels blessed to work, not only with amazing artists but also her friends. Her directing credits include Escanaba in da Moonlight, Don’t Dress for Dinner, the world premiere of June & Jason’s Survival Guide to Divorce, Kalamazoo, Charles Ives Take Me Home, These Shining Lives, Outside Mullingar, A Sleeping Country, and Love, Loss and What I Wore. Warmer Welcomes TNP LOBBY GETS A REFRESH
W
hen The Naples Players opened its doors on 5th Avenue in the 1990s, it gave downtown Naples a fresh and exciting new look. The tens of thousands of patrons spurred growth and revitalized the avenue. However, more than twenty years later, the theater aesthetically remained frozen in time. “One of the most intriguing aspects of design work is that it is constantly evolving,” Executive Artistic Director Bryce Alexander said. “Our tastes and preferences change over time—artistically, culturally, politically—and so do our ideas of how our professional, private, and community spaces look and function.” With different shades of paint patching the walls, wine stains dotting the carpet, and a color palette that fell out of vogue many years ago, The Naples Players lobby was no longer a reflection of today’s world class theatre performed in Blackburn Hall or Tobye Studio Theatre. Balancing the need for a large-scale renovation against the practicality of a costeffective revitalization, The Naples Players enlisted celebrated interior design company Josie Presar Design to provide a cosmetic refresh to the lobby. “We focused on updating and softening the overall color palette of the space while also modernizing patterns and materials of the

finishes,” Josie said. “To add warmth and visual perspective to the lobby, we added a new slat wood material around the entrance to the Tobye Studio Theatre at the rear of the space.” The theater’s restrooms, a natural extension of the lobby, also suffered. But with Josie’s ingenuity and design tricks, the space underwent a dramatic transformation. “We reskinned the bathroom partitions with a wood look, added wall covering, changed out the faucets, and swapped in new back-lit mirrors to completely update and modernize the look of the space,” she said. While the facility still needs major modifications to suit the theater’s growing needs, the atmosphere remains conducive to a high value artistic experience.

Molly McCarville, Stage Management Texas State University
Molly graduated from Texas State University with a BFA in Theatre, emphasis in Technical Production and a Concentration in Stage Management. She has worked as an intern the ZACH Theatre in Texas and the Berkshire Theatre Group. Molly will be assistant stage managing She Loves Me and co-stage managing Bye Bye Birdie, as well as acting as the Assistant Production Stage Manager at TNP.

Davis graduated from Iowa State University with his degree in Theatre Design and Technology with an emphasis in lighting design. He has assisted and fully designed shows for his university as well as around his hometown area. On the Stage Dinner Series A DELICIOUS NEW WAY TO SUPPORT TNP
T
he expression “dinner and a show” will take on new meaning this season at The Naples Players. While patrons have long enjoyed many dinner options in downtown Naples, none have included dinner on the stage of The Naples Players—until now.
Event Dates
The On-The-Stage Dinner Series provides patrons the opportunity to enjoy world class dining on the Blackburn or Tobye stages immediately following a matinee performance. The Naples Players have partnered with Chefs Samir Canaan (Truluck’s), Vladimir Trivunovic (Ocean Prime), and Johnny Maher (Delicious by Design) to create unique culinary experiences at the theater throughout the season.

Each exclusive dinner is limited to just 16 patrons. Season ticket holders may exchange in their existing subscription tickets to attend the matinee performance. Cost of attendance is $150.00 per person ($55.00 of which is tax-deductible).
