Looking ahead by Christy Farnbauch

Executive Director, NAWBO Columbus

Happy Holidays! Another year is quickly coming to a close and it’s time to set our goals and intentions for 2019. Management guru, Peter Drucker said this about planning:

“Planning does not deal with future decisions, but with the future of present decisions.” At NAWBO Columbus, we’re halfway through our fiscal year. Our Board and staff have made some strategic decisions that are going to pay off in the future in meaningful ways for our members.

add value to your membership on the local level. We’re in conversation with strategic partners about affinity programs that will save members money, while helping you grow and scale your businesses. Details will be announced soon. As you consider your year-end charitable contributions, we hope you’ll consider support for women business owners, via NAWBO Columbus, as a cause worthy of your support. Think back to the early days when you were developing your business. Can you remember the uncertainty of not being sure where to turn for support and advice? Our programs and services are designed to provide a one-stop shop for female entrepreneurs at all levels of business growth. Membership dues and program fees provide only a small portion of our total annual revenue. Generous support from corporate partners and individual donors help us serve our members in meaningful ways. Give me a call at 614-636-2926 to discuss options. I continue to be grateful for the opportunity to serve as your Executive Director. Your ongoing feedback about the ways we can serve you better is always welcome. Wishing you extraordinary success in 2019!

The decision to restructure the staff team and hire a full-time program and communications manager is paying dividends in only one month since Mykayla Bryant joined our team. Mykayla has hit the ground running. She is already increasing our social media presence on behalf of members. Check out and join our new private Facebook group for members only. In early 2018, we made the decision to build and launch a new chapter management system, including a new website. We’re preparing to launch the new website and system in early January. Watch your email for details about updating your password and profile as we transition to the new system. The new website will be re-designed and include more interactivity. Based on feedback, we’ll be adding a job board to allow members and corporate partners to post job openings. A new event registration system will streamline the registration process. In 2019 we’ll be developing new programs and services that

WHAT ARE YOUR BEST 3 TIPS OR ADVICE? 1. Take chances, the ones that make you sick to your stomach, often. It pushes you to do new things and afterwards, you’ll think to yourself “that wasn’t so bad”. 2. Get coaching or a mentor. I would not be where I am right now without my coaches. It’s been my biggest and best investment in my business and in myself. 3. Protect your time. It’s your most valuable asset. You can’t get it back. Every Sunday night I sit down and do my schedule for the week.

WHO ARE YOU AND HOW DID YOU FIND NAWBO? I’m Jackie Ayres. I joined NAWBO in Feb 2018 after I attended NAWBO’s “Good to Great” Meeting in January. It was amazing and I knew I had to join NAWBO. I have been enjoying going to the meetings, hearing the inspiring speakers as well as meeting so many other women entrepreneurs.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS. Dyetology is a line of unique, hand-dyed accessories and apparel using natural fibers (Rayon, Bamboo, Silk) founded and designed by me, Jackie Ayres. Everything is super-soft, comfortable and beautiful. Each is a unique piece of wearable art.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GO INTO BUSINESS? I was a Designer in Corporate for 17 years, designing women’s apparel and accessories for such brands as Bath and Body Works, Lane Bryant, and Thirty-One Gifts. Although I was in a creative job, I needed a creative outlet. My business was born out of my love for color and working with my hands. It gave me the creative outlet I was looking for. After 3 years of working my full-time corporate job and doing my business, I took the leap and went all in on my business. I wanted more for myself and my family and that inspired me to leave corporate. 4 NAWBO COLUMBUS • www.nawbocolumbusohio.com

WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? I work out, spend time with my family, and if I get to watch TV- its usually something related to True Crime!

BECAUSE IT’S HEALTH & WELLNESS EXPO MONTH, WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE ABOUT HOW TO STAY HEALTHY BOTH PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY? Feed yourself well and get your sleep. You can’t do anything for your business or family if you don’t feel or think your best. Even if you are a person that doesn’t necessarily feel the effects of lack of sleep, there’s so much research out there that outlines all the negative health consequences of not getting enough sleep. Same for food. You will be able to function at the top of your game both mentally and physically if you’re fueling yourself with a healthy diet.

5 WAYS TO...

Wellness

I N FU S E YO U R WO R KDAY WITH

Start the Workday with a Healthy Breakfast The number one reason why your candle burns out before noon, is that you don’t eat a nutritious breakfast, or you don’t eat breakfast at all! Trying starting with a light bowl of yogurt and fruit, and steer clear of white starches and sugar-filled pastries.

Make Time For Face Time We know it’s easier to email your team—even when they’re sitting 50 feet away from you. However, actually addressing a question or conversation in person, will support human collaboration and teamwork, keep your brain active, and break up the time you spend sitting in a chair all day long.

Drink Plenty of Water One common source of mistaken hunger is dehydration. We often feel like a snack, when in fact we’re actually in need of H20. So fill a large bottle and keep it desk-side all day. If you don’t like the taste of plain water, try slicing lemon, lime, orange, or cucumber for a lively infused water.

Grow Vegetation So you don’t go vegetative at your desk mid-day, spruce up your workspace with a bit of greenery. Growing plants will help to detoxify stale office air of harmful chemicals and toxins, reduce oxidative stress, and bring a little of the outdoors, indoors.

S-T-R-E-T-C-H and Breathe Take a “breather,” you understand the importance of this term, and should take it literally. Daily mini breathers can be practiced as needed throughout the day to reduce stress and muscle pains, improve concentration, lower blood pressure, and calm your mind and body

QUESTIONS WITH... Elizabeta Damceski,

Tell us about your business. Gerber, LLC is a one-of-a-kind advisory firm working exclusively with first generation entrepreneurs to help define and achieve their personal and professional goals. With over 25 years in business Gerber has built a dedicated process to improve the entrepreneur’s business, cash flow, and happiness factor. We’re helping business owners understand the entrepreneurial journey and sequencing of growing a business and providing the entrepreneurial ecosystem they need to get there. In working with over 200 first generation entrepreneurs Gerber built The Emerging Entrepreneur Experience (EEE) after recognizing a gap in guidance between the startup community and established entrepreneurs. EEE was created for the entrepreneurs at least two years in business. The program acts as a guidebook for business owners to better navigate business growth with less cost and less heartache.

What motivated your organization to partner with NAWBO? Gerber was built on the belief that first generation entrepreneurs are the leaders and creators of the world who have limitless potential to improve the lives of others– and we know NAWBO attracts the female entrepreneurs who do just that! Gerber LLC believes in helping entrepreneurs build rewarding businesses and providing the necessary tools to maintain sustainable businesses so getting involved with NAWBO was a no-brainer. Female entrepreneurs are a force to be reckoned with, and we want to stand by them as they thrive.

Gerber, LLC

What does your company offer NAWBO members? Gerber and EEE provide the customized guidance entrepreneurs need to go from working IN the business day to day to working ON their business to grow and thrive. This is important to NAWBO members because all entrepreneurs are guilty of getting wrapped up in the daily operations of their business, losing sight of what they are passionate about. Gerber provides the clarity to uncover problem areas in their business that need attention. We get the entrepreneur back on track to hone in on what their “why” really is and establish a solid foundation to build upon.

What is your best bit of business advice you can share with our members? The one best practice we’ve learned in working with first generation entrepreneurs is to not ignore the basics. Something as simple as working off of a ‘working, strategic business plan’ is often overlooked or ignored. We have so many emerging entrepreneurs who will come to us after we go through building their business plans and express how it changed their relationship with their business. In that same vein, we spend a lot of time talking with entrepreneurs about how their business impacts their lifestyle goals; that integration conversation is one of the first things we talk to clients about but always makes a huge impact.

What does health and wellness mean to Gerber LLC and its employees/clients Health and wellness are an important part of our culture at Gerber, and a mantra we foster in advising our business owner clients. Work/life integration is something we live by, so the promotion of a healthy lifestyle to our team members and our client process is natural and necessary for our team and clients to thrive.
