pretext /ˈpriːtɛkst/ noun noun: pretext; plural noun: pretexts a reason given in justification of a course of action that is not the real reason.

Pretext. PreTesto. Pre-Text. Behind a Pretext there is always a real reason. The Pretext wears a mask, the one derived from the Latin ornament that builds its etymology. It covers and conceals, it insinuates itself into actions as a contrivance, as an ‘excuse for’. When we begin to pay attention to it, everything becomes Pretext. The portfolio consists of two parts: PreText and Dictionary. PreText is composed as a selected collection of projects, graphic works and texts produced, both academic and personal. The choice was mediated by self-criticism and personal preference, taking into account project progression or regression. The Dictionary accompanies the projects, scrolling down the left-hand side of some pages; it is placed in a separate reading level. The definitions assigned to the chosen words are often unusual, sometimes incomprehensible. Nothing, however, is left to chance: notes are at the end.

ARCHIPELAGO

The project is the port of the cemetery island, the most introverted of the autonomies, takes shape precisely as a landing place, a direct connection with context and islands, and under San Bernardino establishes a physical and conceptual correspondence with the archipelago. It is divided into four main elements: Black Beach (car park), Tunnel (vaulted corridor), Court (underground), Podium (terrace and open space below the church). “The natural landscape of Urbino, with its crops, is no longer a stable backdrop to which to anchor oneself but rather a fabric of apparent precariousness, which can be permanently disrupted.”

Leonardo Benevolo, Urbino.

Starting from the assumption that Urbino is an archipelago, it must necessarily be considered that each island composing it, in addition to a character definable according to social and morphological parameters, has a port. The port is the most critical point, in the “water” land relationship in relation to material change (in our case it would be built-natural), and also as a point of landing and indirect relationship with the other islands.

Giancarlo De Carlo’s master plan took into account the multidimensionality of the city of Urbino and above all its unique relationship with the natural fabric. Through the careful study of the morphology of the area, which includes not only the historical centre, but also the perceptible landscape, the plan develops as a reading and deciphering of the system of relations between the built and the natural, and also as an exemplary attitude that sees the architects of Federico Da Montefeltro as a reference. De Carlo himself, in an interview with Pierluigi Nicolin for Lotus Booklet, states, however, how much the balance between built-up area and landscape has suffered dangerous cracks as a result of artificial development that has not been sufficiently mediated and conscious, and furthermore not closely connected with the natural. The built-up area now behaves as a collection of isolated systems, cityislands with clearly recognisable boundaries, as if the landscape had turned into a sea. It is extremely evident how this development has limited not only Urbino’s relationship with its context, but also certain elements that related the city to its surroundings. 7

PLAY! The monumental game

Federico Da Montefeltro’s architects to transform the mediaeval city into a Renaissance capital) and are without doubt: the La Pineta residential district, the university colleges and the mercatale and torrione. These elements, cornerstones of the attitude that could have led Urbino to be an interwoven natural and built fabric, now behave like the ports of the city-islands, which are the direct consequence of exceptions to the plan and a mitosis between two aspects that, mitigated, had always been its greatest strength.

“Annegare in terraferma O camminare sopra l’acqua Ma non tocca a me la scelta Mi dispiace mamma, ma devo andare Finché la terra diventa mare Non c’è più vento, non c’è più sorte Ormai non mi spaventa neanche la morte” Selton, Terraferma

“PLAY the monumental game” is what follows the realisation of the project. As architecture is shown, it also needs to be told. The purpose of “PLAY” is precisely to make the reader enter architecture, which is inevitably unrealisable by its nature as an academic, utopian project-exercise. It is articulated as a narrative text in which, however, choices can be made. It simulates, therefore, movement in space and sensory experiences that would only be perceivable if the utopia were realised. The game consists precisely in taking a position and choosing a path, which becomes personal, and aimed at an arrival that is not exactly clear, at times unpredictable and even unsuccessful.

Urbino is and was a microcosm. It has multiple dimensions, including historical, touristic, university and certainly geographical. The reflection of this multidimensionality strongly affects the physical expansion of the city, but, above all, it magnifies its spatial structure. Urbino is a complex organism, which appears differently depending on the point from which it is observed, and this continuous diversification and variation of perceptibility that it presents contributes to unifying it in an image of great breadth. Giancarlo De Carlo’s plan certainly took this phenomenon into account, through the careful study of the morphology of the area that includes not only the historic centre but also the perceptible landscape. The aim of the plan was to decipher the system of relations between the built and the natural, as the latter can be considered closely connected to the fabric of the city. De Carlo himself, in an interview with Pierluigi Nicolin for Lotus Booklet, states how the balance between built-up area and landscape has suffered dangerous cracks as a result of insufficiently mediated and conscious artificial development. The built-up area now behaves as a set of isolated systems, city-islands with clearly recognisable boundaries, as if the landscape had turned into a sea. Building and residential production, particularly that surrounding the Pine Forest, suppresses the city’s grandeur as a result of its multidimensionality to make way for one-sided growth of development anchored on exceptions to the plan. It is extremely evident how this development limited not only Urbino’s relationship with its context, but also certain elements that related the city to its surroundings. The key elements of the plan are those that most blend with the context and define the attitude of fusion between the historical centre and the expansion area (in some way the method adopted by 21

I no longer felt a single muscle, perhaps from the cold, perhaps from the impact or perhaps from fear. My skin, however, felt that strange material, the same one that had greeted me after the shipwreck. It was icy, perhaps wet, giving the idea of shattered black glass. I was standing and kept losing myself in that dense weave that was so black as to be shiny. That was probably why they called it a black island, perhaps those who had managed to get close and return to the other ports to tell about it had called it that because of that unusual landing. I remembered the kind welcome at the first port I had encountered. I was coming from Rimini, north-west of the archipelago, and in the distance I could see the first island: the white island. La Pineta, its port, had been the place of my first landing. I had begun my journey at the foot of that gigantic complex of buildings, which was almost entirely submerged with the rising tide. The brilliance of that harbour was still firmly imprinted in my mind, it was an overlook towards the archipelago within it and at the same time the beacon that signalled its presence to the surrounding towns. The island was almost entirely composed of residential buildings and the air I had breathed was familiar, calm, hospitable. In the logbook I had described it as οἶκος, which in Greek means family or home. An oikos was the basic unit of society in most Greek city-states. Oikos was used in modern sociology to describe social groups. One may know several dozen or hundreds of people, but the time spent with them is extremely limited: only those with whom one has lasting relationships can be said to be part of an oikos . Every individual has a primary group that includes relatives and friends who relate to the individual through work, recreation, hobbies, or by being close. Modern oikos, however, comprise people who share some sort of social relationship, either through conversation or mere

intercourse, for at least a total of one hour per week. This was the memory that the white island had left me with: a place of social interaction and contact with the inhabitants who had been hospitable to me and others who went to sea. I never imagined, after my first stop, that I would find myself on a beach so black and invaded by forest. I made the mistake of raising my head: an army of logs at attention hid Saint Bernard in the background, I felt faint and in a moment I was back on land. I got up again when it was night, but the difference with the day was not much, the sky was barely visible and the moon had turned the beach and the trees into a labyrinth of mirrors. The forest had appropriated that corner of the island and the shadow was its signature. I was wandering without logic, the ground beneath me rose and fell as much as the waves that had brought me there, the sight played tricks on me and my mind certainly didn’t have the strength not to be fooled by those long-linear figures that repeatedly appeared as if they were alive and capable of encircling me. It was luck that made me fall this time and threw me to the ground. My palms felt hot and dry and my feet were still trapped in that black earth. I was at a trivium, the only way out was to make a choice.

barrièra s. f. [dal fr. barrière, der. di barre «barra»]. – shelter, barrier to mark a boundary, to close a passageway fig. Obstacle, impediment, or closure, demarcation, boundary: to create, place barriers

The Lido is a barrier. Both morphologically and conceptually, it acts as a shelter, a barrier and a boundary between two ecosystems that are inevitably confronted. One of these ecosystems that is established in the contrasting relationship as an attacking enemy is the sea. The Lido is on the front line in a border war between land and water. Every centimetre is vital to maintain the integrity of the island and its tourist beach. The Lido grits its teeth as the sea dries it up, its currents thin it out, and the slow but swift action of time brings more and more wounds. The sea rises, it seems to become an invincible enemy, the high tides are deep attacks. Traces of ‘66 still remain, the murazzi sheltered civilians from the waves and still bear the marks. The murazzi themselves are an anthropic barrier within a territorial barrier, an intervention aimed at defending the housing behind, the result of a building boom during the Golden Island period. In front of them, the beach takes up space and welcomes the intense tourist activity of the summer months. Every element built on the reef is continually exposed to the attack of the sea. It is time to take a stand: continue the border war by bringing sand to sand or put down your weapons and resist nonviolently. Restore the natural balance across the dunes, reconsider the Lido no longer as a tourist beach and experience the barrier in relation to this conflict, only then can peace be achieved. In 2050 perhaps there will be peace. The dunes will restore a balance between ecosystems and a new spatial construction of the island with a consequent connection between its inhabitants and the very border they inhabit. The walls, at the forefront, will no longer be just the defensive system but the new shore. Non-violent resistance will bring the Lido back to its primary and innate characteristic: its being a profound barrier.

The Lido is, therefore, a littoral cordon made up of sandy elevations of emerged beaches and aeolian dunes. The dune systems, present in particular in the south (Alberoni) and north, remain, despite human intervention, an unmistakable feature of the morphology and landscape. Landfill material is present in the central-western sector of the island on the lagoon side; here, land reclamation was essentially carried out by filling in the 19th century and in the first decade of the 20th century through the filling in of mud from the excavation of lagoon canals. Heavy human intervention, which also included the construction of the ‘murazzi’, the ‘groynes’ against beach erosion in the central part of the Lido and the dykes at the Lido and Malamocco inlets, favoured beach accretion and allowed ‘inland’ urban development.

Foreshore-”wet sand”-running, racquetball, five-a-side football pitch, sand castles, waiting on the shore. Backshore-’safe spot’-’sun-kissed’, street vendors, umbrellas, tent. Backshore is what defines the limit of the beach and the beginning of the built-up area, change not only spatially, but as a direct consequence also socially. Foreshore is contact limit. The shore defends itself from the sea so as not to be swallowed up by it.

“The island-barrier is inherently vulnerable to storm surges, inevitably has preserved environmental values in a largely man-made environment, and is home to a unique model of bathing organisation, virtually unchanged since the 19th century.” Bezzi et al, 2014

If we take into account the division of the coastline, established by wave breaking point (offshore-nearshore), the beginning of the shore (dependent on the tide level, foreshore), and the tongue of land not washed by the water (backshore), we already spatially establish, in relation to the land-sea relationship, the situations proper to each ‘strip’. Offshore-”static” sea -controlled passage of boats, pedal boats, dinghies, waiting surfers, swimmers. The Lido returns to its true nature. It is returning to its origins, to what it morphologically and territorially is. The interventions are all aimed at an attitude of redevelopment and expansion of the dune oasis, with the aim of gradually abandoning the attitude that has led the Lido to be, today, a destination abandoned by luxury tourism. The soldier of the first metaphor accompanies us throughout the planning process, from the tale of the border war between land and sea, to the progressive approach to the awareness of the key to solving the problem. The urban plan is articulated along the entire length of the coastline, entering however into the interior of the lido and involving fundamental spaces connected to places of access to the sea front. Each situation is conceived in relation to the pre-existence and above all to a progressive landscape and morphological evolution. Initially the soldier raised his hands, something ambiguous was shown in the poster image. Now the figure in the metaphor is an old man, wise, looking out to sea and leaving behind a different, mature landscape. The figure is identified with Dostojevski, author of War and Peace, and an openly and actively pacifist character.

ASSO DI COUPE coli, and crosses the foundations until it flows into the Giudecca canal. It is a deep crack, separating two souls of the city: that of the historical fabric and the ‘parasitic’ industrial one. The violence of the contrast has caused it to fracture, and it is now in need of repair. The baroque façade of the Terese claims, in front of one of Venice’s oldest churches, the need for an intervention, surgical, to reunite it with itself and its context; even its door is broken. The crack must be repaired, in the same way as kintsugi practices, with a golden glue, witness to the, still present but dormant, soul of the city of splendour. If not a bridge, the factory must be a table, on which one stands and talks, on which one sleeps and eats.

Without doing it on purpose, an engraved point created disarray, bewilderment and above all a rupture. De Barbari was already there, a factory that had sprung up south of Venice, almost close to the Giudecca canal, grafted right in front of a church, one of the oldest in the city. It lived various lives, some as a convent, then as an orphanage and dormitory, until now, which, bearing the traces of time, motionless and introverted, calls itself home. Santa Marta grew as a mirror of time on earth, taking up space in a world of its own, as its new and necessary contemporary evolution. In the imaginative setting of a journey, where discovery is the driving force of thought, and curiosity becomes a mania, the senses mingle and confuse, or perhaps, give birth to a sixth, which is the sum of them. Gare de Mines is an industrial world, a forest of incomplete and abandoned architecture. Desolation is its essence. Yet the space moves, with inexorable time. The structures speak, living the place as a world of their own. We can only be visitors to a reality that fascinates us. We spy the place and its inhabitants as in the practice of birdwatching; hidden inside a camouflaged structure with augmented vision devices. In this case, the sight is enriched by sound, it is, as we said before, a kind of additional sense. The project consists of a metal structure, a tower, a steel periscope, and a sound amplification system that is activated depending on the direction of our gaze.

It seems that today’s fashion is no longer enough.Paradoxical! Considering that we can get everything, even a smart suit for 25€. Yet thrift shops turnover more than H&M (64 MLD for secondhand, against 44 MLD for fast fashion). But even second-hand is not enough for us. We miss the care in designing and making the garments, the attention to the singularity of the wearer and, above all, the uniqueness of the piece; not mass-produced, but exclusively unrepeatable. The photos collected are the first step, the starting point, towards a project that aims to merge ideals of a fashion that treats each garment as a valuable object, a piece of art.

Relief and redesign of a fixie bike, symbol-object and personal heirloom. Nicknamed ‘breda’, or rather ‘without brand’, the bike bears countless brand stickers on its frame. BRAND NEW BREDA is the representation of the oxymoron that characterises an object that, despite being without brand, is loaded with a thousand others. The title imitates the beginning of the track ‘Star67’ by Drake, album ‘If You’re Reading This Is Too Late’.

Connecting the Giudecca Canal is impossible, it would mean draining the Day of the Redeemer of all its ritual power. It is the façade of the church that encloses the scene that the bridge constructs, it is through it that the cermony can take place. The bond then is also established in the anticipation of this moment, which is why we want the church covered by a large curtain for a year, revealing the stage only for this festival, ephemeral in its centuries-old tradition.

ANARCHITECTURE Matta-Clark once told an interviewer that, far from addressing humanity’s problems, most architects were not ‘solving anything except how to make a living’ 1

Yet it was not just a question of attacking architects or architectural theories. Matta-Clark writes in one of his notebooks that, ‘Design morality is valid. The functional issue was chosen because it seemed the most critical break from the beaux-arts, histrionic garbage. It was valid for its time. But how long has it been? Seventy years since any kind of radical reappraisal has gone on?’ It was the dead hand of such figures as Le Corbusier on American creativity that Matta-Clark resented. Yet the passionately held tenets of those he jokingly referred to as ‘The International Stool’ could be turned in an intellectual judo-move and used to develop his own conceptual framework. This was a game that could provide real results. With the help of his fellow travellers Matta-Clark was carving out a territory within which to work. Anarchitecture, with its use of found photographs and the aphoristic statements Matta-Clark recorded in his notebooks, is on some level both an echo of and a riposte to Corbusier’s polemic.

Six months, casual and mutual Photography Book with Manou Pijpstra 2022 Paris, FR

The construction of this book took place progressively, over six months, in parallel with an interpersonal acquaintance. Subjects and techniques merge, recede, differ and resemble each other; likewise, the book is designed to have neither order nor division between the authors or subjects photographed. We arrived lost in a city, and found ourselves as wandering dogs.

Life is reduced to the domestic dimension. TheDescrizione future, understood as the hypothesis of a reality that excludes direct contact with the outside world, cannot but abandon the existence of the human body as a ‘mobile home’. It would seem, then, that the future is far removed from the idea of the humanoid, from the Darwinian evolution from body to body.

NOTES

Abitare“The lorry driver is at home on the motorway, yet this is not where he stays; the factory worker is at home in the spinning mill, yet he does not live there; the engineer who runs the power plant is at home there, yet he does not live there.” Heidegger on Building Dwelling Thinking cap 96 Anonimo Ideal City Archi- A long reflection could be made on the concept of Arché. Not so much for its importance in the history of the development of thought, but perhaps more for what it has left us. The etymology of the word Arché is obvious, unabashedly dual, which however carries with it a series of contradictions and conflicts that, fortunately, will never be resolved. Arché is ONE principle, the first, the last and the only; it is monist in all its essence, so much so that it sounds to us like a cosmic law, or even more simply as divine. Yet Architecture is simplified at best to a dualism, already intrinsic in the word. The architect then is able to reconcile the irreconcilable, to bring in contradictions that are incomprehensible to most; we are painting a divine. Arrogante Attributing is always a risky act, subject to the inevitable law of ‘good or evil’ judgement. To attribute is even more dangerous. In Roman law, to arrogate was to adopt a person not subject to the parental authority of another. (Arti) Art is craft, technique. It seems that lately technical and artistic are opposed to each other. However, the art of building a wall and a painting technique are not so far apart. It is no coincidence that Heidegger, in ‘The Origin of the Work of Art’, speaks of art using as a pretext Authentic In the language of fashion, beauty that broadens the traditional aesthetic canons, including what is typical, personal, characteristic [...] of the individual and therefore authentic and appreciable. Autentico “that which is deeper as opposed to that which is more superficial; for example, that which touches the depths of any psychic existence as opposed to that which touches its epidermis, that which lasts as opposed to that which is momentary, that which has grown and developed with the person as opposed to that which the person has accepted or imitated” Jaspers, Psychology of World Views, 1918 “Part of being, considered in its authenticity and totality, is also the very end of being, i.e. Death. Death is the most proper, unconditional, certain and, as such, indeterminate and insuperable possibility of being.” M. Heidegger, Being and Time, 1927 Autogestione Lukas Fuster, videoconference wave2020 Bagno Damiana Paternò, project review, restoration design class, 2019. Ballatoio “I spent a few hours observing [...] the movement of the inhabitants in my house [...] people were up north all on the balconies in front of each door, with deckchairs and stools, to participate as actors and spectators in the theatre of themselves and the street” De Carlo, 1954 Banale notes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oi4ZXU_vh2M Banalità “im rahmen der pläne des hochkommissariats des reiches zur festigung des germanismus musste ich den transport nach Berlin planen, das war mein auftrag […] im Rahmen meiner Verantwortung musste ich natürlich meine Aufgabe erfüllen” A. Eichmann, Israel trial “as part of the Reich High Commission’s plans, to consolidate Germanism, I was to plan the transport to Berlin, that was my job [...] within the scope of my responsibility, of course, I had to do my duty” Adolf Eichmann, known as ‘The Specialist’, can be seen as the perfect portrait of a banality. He was in charge of transport in Berlin during the rule of the Reich, as he himself states, he fulfilled his duty as he was commanded. It would be all normality, even a good example, if only it were not for the fact that the trains he ran so punctually arrived in Poland in the extermination camps. The trial that Hannah Arendt reports in her 1963 essay ‘The Banality of Evil’ is her object of study and the clearest demonstration of the Banality as the raw evil of those who, like Pontius Pilate, wash their hands of it under a power that is ‘too great to be contested’’. Bello and yet the Pythagorean ‘trinity’ still seems to like it very much. It is clear that the concept of the beautiful cannot be summarised in a brief definition; rather, it is to be offered as critical food for thought. In the history of aesthetics, considering it as a questioning of the concept of ‘beauty’, we often cling to the trinity, which is first indicated as Pythagorean but which inevitably comes to us today. Beauty is never only beautiful, but also true and good, sometimes a reflection of God, sometimes of man, sometimes of nature. The definition introduces ‘taste’ as a concept that becomes preponderant when the canons, typical of periods such as the Hellenic or Neoclassical, are met with rebellion, rejection or scepticism. The ugly then is what takes over the reins of the game and becomes opposition, part of, or beauty itself. So what is beautiful and what is ugly? Brutto Movie, spaghetti western, Sergio Leone, 1966 Brutto Miuccia Prada, t-Magazine, 2013 Brutalismo Referred to Torre Velasca, Milan, 1950, BBPR. The project, often considered one of the cornerstones of Italian Brutalist Architecture, is as imposing and expressive as the Gothic Duomo and the Filarete tower at Castello Sforzesco. The tower is iconic and a translation of a modern attitude that is capable of translating the language of the past. CAD Sara Marini, project review, Design Laboratory 2. Caos One speaks of deterministic chaos to indicate a property of systems governed by perfectly deterministic laws of evolution, such, however, that a minimum difference in the initial conditions produces enormously different evolutions; given that the initial conditions, in real systems, are always affected by an even minimal uncertainty, the state of the aforementioned systems ends up being absolutely unpredictable after a certain interval of time, giving rise to the so-called butterfly effect (see butterfly). Unlike deterministic chaos, stochastic c. concerns irregular and unpredictable behaviour, resulting not from the intrinsic dynamics of the system itself, but from external perturbing agents that act in a completely random and uncorrelated manner. Città Constant Nieuwenhuys, New Babylon (1959-1974) was born as a theoretically universal structure capable of colonising the territory by branching out and relying on a mesh of sectors, the basic unit. Conceived for the homo ludens who is a fully free individual and conscious of being able to act on the world by recreating it through creativity and free play, a fundamental form of learning. Archigram, Ron Herron, Walking City (1964) are 400-metre long and 220-metre high housing structures resting on eight legs, which allow them to move. Herron’s images caused a sensation. The enormous mobile machines of Walking City landing in front of Manhattan, camping in the desert or emerging from the sea in front of an Algiers in which Le Corbusier’s Obus plan has been realised indicate, however, that architectural research cannot stop, limiting itself to the management of the ordinary and the feasible; and they anticipate the hope, which will be embraced by the students of 1968, that the profession can finally project itself towards utopia.Superstudio, Casabella no. 361 (1972), the 12 ideal cities are characteristically and structurally conceived radical utopias. Superstudio’s work moves, when viewed in its entirety, increasingly in the direction of abstraction and at the same time progressively moves away from architecture as a practical discipline, as a constructive activity. Carattere Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961), In Contribution à l’études des types psycholgiques (1913) and in Psychologischen Typen (1921), he classified certain types of character, a classification later taken up and systematised by the Anglo-German psychologist Hans Jürgen Eysenck (1916-1997) in The Scientific Study of the Personality (1946) and in The Structure of Human Personality (1970). Three types of ‘character’ would result from these studies. Climax Aubrey Beardsley, illustration (1893), depicts Oscar Wilde’s Salome kissing the severed head of John the Baptist. Black and white print on parchment. Cliché Marshall McLuhan, From Cliché to Archetype (1970). A sort of 200-page perceptual dictionary (in which, by the way, the introduction is under I) in which the assumption is “discover the dimension of archetype that is locked up in every cliché” and these are ubiquitous and stereotypical elements in an anaesthetised modern society. To cope with this cliché effect, it is necessary to activate the evocative power of archetypes. According to McLuhan, technique as a ‘mere tool’ is one of the fundamental clichés that must be eradicated and unmasked instead as the ‘environment’, as the ‘form that shapes the content’ that are capable of shaping the contour. There is a need to return from the cliché to the archetype. Eros is, for Aristophanes, the desiring force that drives humans ‘towards one another, and which (...) attempts to make two into one and to heal human nature’. Those desiring beings that are in fact humans, have as their archè the splitting of the wholeness they were and as their telos, as their aspiration and project, the return to a wholeness. If life is desire and desire implies lack, life is in fact, structurally, the movement of a lack that, however, can never, exhaustively, be filled. Desire, as Socrates would later explain, is the one who stands in the middle between mortal and immortal; it could be daimon. domus Gio Ponti, Incontri: un’ora con Gio Ponti, Rai (1975). Dicotomia We divide the interval [a, b] into two equal intervals considering the point x₁=(b-a)/2, and calculate f(x₁). Se f(x₁)=0, we have found an exact solution, otherwise a solution can be found in the interval at whose extremes the function assumes discordant values. Let us choose such an interval and determine its midpoint x₂ as before. We choose one of its two intervals by the same method and proceed to subdivide the chosen intervals. We obtain a succession of points x₁, x₂, ..., xn, ... which converges to a solution x0 of the equation. We have, |xn-x0|≤(b-a)/2 per n=1, 2, ...; we can then easily approximate a solution. Dinamica Recommended exposure times for photographing a motorbike, a cyclist, a runner at medium-slow speed using the panning technique. Tempo “I can say that I know that if nothing passed, there would be no past time, and if nothing came, there would be no future time, and if nothing was, there would be no present time. But as for the two times past and future, in what way are they, when the past, on the one hand, no longer is, and the future, on the other, still is not? As for the present, then, if it were always present, and did not pass into the past, it would no longer be time, but would, on the contrary, be eternity. If, consequently, the present, in order to be time, succeeds in so far as it passes into the past, in what way can we say that it is, if for it the true cause of being is only in so far as it no longer will be, so much so that, in fact, there is only one true reason for saying that time is, except in so far as it tends not to be?” Augustine, The Confessions, 1968 Tempio Massimo Cacciari, abitare-pensare, casabella, april 2014 Università From lat. universitas -atis ‘totality, universality’, der. di universus ‘universe’ Utile “It was a unanimous consensus who mixed the useful with the sweet’ Horatio, Ars poetica Utopia Il Nuovissimo Melzi, 1926 Utopia Superstudio, Opere, 19661978 Venezia Rif campaign slogan promoted by the LISC student collective at Ca’Foscari. Thanksgiving in Venice. It was, always has been and always will be the city so contemporary as to be out of time. Every nook and cranny is constructed, purely artificial and thoughtlessly human-scale. The most anthropocentric city in the world, the one that shows itself as a set of façades to those who visit it and swallows up those who choose it like a digestive system. Venice is alive, it breathes, but it does not move unless we abandon ourselves to its constitution. The water comes in and goes out when it pleases, it is not up to us to decide the tides. Venice is the city of those who choose to live the lagoon and the stone like an amphibian. I thank and reproach Venice for being the most beautiful city in the world. A modern encyclopaedia of architecture that has lifted spirits, ideas and debates. First published in 1995, it continues to be a graphic, conceptual and design reference. OMA is not only a great studio and Koolhaas an archistar: they are still fixed points for an architecture and urbanism that breaks free from the constraints and trivialisations we have inherited since the third generation of moderns. SMLXL is the bible of unconventional, sophisticated, and at times irreverent architecture and graphics. (Credit for this is also due to its Dutch origin, yet nothing has ever turned out so well at Winy Mass). Zero Curious how ‘0’ is the perfect graphic representation of emptiness.
