Letter from a Leader RON SENCI

Executive Vice President, Lending & Sales

Hello and welcome back to our new magazine! Here are a few highlights from this edition:

OUR 90TH BIRTHDAY!

Did you know Elements was founded by the management of Eli Lilly and Company in 1930? This was at the height of the Great Depression during a time when street lenders and loan sharks were targeting their employees. All these decades later, we are still an employer-based credit union, empowering our members to achieve financial success. Watch future editions of The Guide and our social media channels to showcase our big birthday this year.

PROGRESS ON THE ELEMENTS FINANCIAL CLUB

It’s exciting to see the club carrying our credit union’s name coming together at Victory Field. Opening Day for the Indianapolis Indians is April 9th when the brand-new Elements Financial Club will also open its doors to fans. This partnership with the Indians is incredibly rewarding to our credit union because their organization understands the importance of community and family as we do here at Elements. Please learn more about this milestone project on page 16.

FEATURED FAN MAIL

This time, we’re featuring Cheryle and Alexander Smith, a mother and son who are both members of Elements. Alexander had endured some financial difficulties, so his mother encouraged him to work with us as her financial institution of 30 years. Thankfully, he was able to get back on his feet and get the new truck he needed to get to and from work and to transport his children. It’s an inspiring story!

“OUT & ABOUT”

Please be sure to take a look at this new section. Elements is proud to support our Central Indiana community in many ways, including through sponsorship of special events for many causes that we know are also important to our partner organizations and individual members. Lastly, allow me to say thank you for your loyalty to Elements. We wish you prosperity and financial success in 2020! Many thanks for your business,

3

Our Credit Union We asked our members via social media to share how we are “like a bank, only better.” Here’s what they had to say:

ALL-OVER ACCESS

Elements is easy to do business with, even for members in other states. I live in Florida and have never stepped foot in an Elements branch, yet have always been able to easily conduct all of my financial business with them.

- Koren E.

IMPACTFUL RELATIONSHIPS

HELPING HOMEOWNERS

- Nicole W.

- Brandon S.

QUICK & CONVENIENT

ON-SITE AT WORK

- Heather S.

- Josh A.

Elements is large enough to supply the best rates and business support that I need, yet small enough that I feel like I am working with friends. Love my Elements because it is like a bank, only better!

I love that I can conveniently run to the ATM at work quickly between meetings if I need to. It’s simple and I don’t even need to waste time pulling out my card!

4

The folks at Elements know us and our situation, and they successfully helped us prepare for owning a home. The banks we worked with before never put in the effort to get to know us and our needs.

Elements provides financial wellness events at my workplace and my checking account has a fantastic interest rate. These perks make Elements like a bank, only better.

Back on the Road Two Generations of Loyalty to Elements

When life takes an unexpected turn, it’s often hard to get your financial journey back on track again. Alexander Smith knew it was time to upgrade when his old vehicle’s mileage was creeping higher. As a father, reliable transportation for his children was important. Unfortunately, his recent divorce had caused him some financial hardships that hurt his credit score, making it difficult for him to purchase a new vehicle at a time he really needed one. He was frustrated and needed help, so he turned to his mother for guidance. Cheryle, Alexander’s mother, is an employee at Eli Lilly and Company in Downtown Indianapolis. For the past 18 years she has worked for the company and has been a member of Elements. Over the course of her membership, she and her family members have experienced many life milestones. Along the way, they have always turned to Elements for financial guidance. 6

When her son asked her for help, Cheryle was conveniently able to walk down to the branch at her workplace. She met with financial wellness experts and shared her story, “Alexander is struggling. He doesn’t seem to be able to get the loan he needs for a truck. What can I do to support him?” They were then able to walk Cheryle through the steps necessary to support her son. Together, they found a solution. Alexander got his finances back on the right track and was able to successfully upgrade to a newer truck that he’s loving! Traveling to and from work, transporting young children, and working on home improvement projects is now doable and convenient. He’s also able to start re-building his credit thanks to his ability to consistently pay on his monthly auto loan. It is a win-win for him. At Elements, we pride ourselves on building relationships and bonds with our members. When you have financial challenges, Elements is here to help you surpass them and ultimately achieve your life goals.

Save Smarter Better Budgeting in 2020 CHARLES AKINBOLA

Elements Branch Manager at Lilly Technology Center

Setting goals for the New Year is easy. The challenge is actually accomplishing them. If your New Year’s resolution is to save money, it is important to set goals that are SMART, to make them more realistic. The SMART method tells users to set their goals to be: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. With any goal, if you set the bar too high, it’s easy to give up. But if you write down your goals and share them with others, you’re more likely to succeed. A great way to spend the first few months of 2020 is setting attainable financial goals and working to stay on track with them throughout the year. To help you get started, we’ve collected a few of our favorite savings tips from staff around Elements. How will you use these to reach your financial goals in 2020?

8

DIRECT DEPOSIT

When you get paid, send a portion of your paycheck to a savings account immediately via direct deposit.

48 HOUR RULE

Before making any large or unusual purchases, wait two days to consider if it is necessary.

NO SPEND WEEKEND

Choose to do only free activities and eat food that you have already purchased for an entire weekend. Repeat this one weekend per month for the year.

REASSIGN BILL DUE DATES

Many companies will let you reassign the due dates of your bills in order to better align with when you are paid. Make paying your bills your first priority!

CARRY LARGE BILLS

When you have large bills, you’re less likely to buy things you don’t need. It is more difficult to break $50 or $100 bills than it is to spend small amounts of cash.

TAX REFUND

Plan ahead and commit to saving most of your tax refund in a dedicated account or emergency fund.

52 WEEK CHALLENGE

Tear this page out and give it a visible home. Cross off one amount each week and add that much cash to your dedicated savings account. After one year, you’ll have an extra $1,000 to use for emergency or holiday-related expenses!

Planning Ahead Three Ways Successful People Save RAYMOND MARK, CFP

®

LPL Financial Advisor at Elements Wealth Management

It’s not surprising that humans are creatures of habit. Stopping at Starbucks every morning? It’s a habit. Binge-watching your favorite TV series every night? That’s a habit, too. There are even people who get up at 5:00 AM to go to the gym every day. Research shows that as much as 45 percent of human behavior happens at a similar time and place, every day. Just like managing your daily routines and behaviors, to be a successful investor, managing your money has to become a daily habit. Successful people are strategic and often manage their money using these principles.

1. Saving is a top priority. Paying yourself is an important part of any successful financial plan. When saving for milestones, such as education or retirement, it’s important to diversify where your money is placed. According to Business Insider, the best savers often put their money in both tax-advantaged and taxable retirement accounts. More than 50 percent of these savers has money in a 401(k), Traditional IRA, and a Roth IRA.

2. Saving works best with strategic goals. Never underestimate the power of a goal. Whether or not the goal becomes reality often depends on whether the creator takes the time to write it down and share it with others. Successful people tend to create a good mix of short- and long-term goals. What is the main reason people don’t get what they want? They don’t know what they want.

3. Saving takes both patience and discipline. Although sometimes being patient or disciplined isn’t our natural instinct, successful savers spend time practicing these traits. Those who are careful with their money are typically also careful with their time. It is much easier to avoid the temptation of spending money if you stay away from situations that encourage you to make purchases contrary to your savings goals.

The Many Myths of a Mortgage JULIE BOWERING Vice President, Mortgage Lending

If you’re in the market for a new home, you may seek the advice of friends and family before you begin the process. When talking to others, it is important to know there are many myths that prevail about homebuying. Just because something is true for one person doesn’t mean it’s a fact. We are here to clear up a few of these common myths you might have heard.

MYTH #1: MAINTAINING A HOME IS EXPENSIVE It’s important to remember that owning a home is more than just making a monthly mortgage payment. It is also important to remember the difference between having to handle your own maintenance requests, while landlords typically handle these when renting. However, if you consider the costs and plan for unexpected expenses, paying for necessary maintenance is typically feasible. The age of the home can impact these costs. A new home built within the last five to ten years will need the 14

least amount of maintenance, while homes about 10 to 20 years old will need slightly more. Once a home turns 20 or 30 years old, it’s likely that major parts of the home, such as the roof, may need to be replaced. As a homeowner, you should expect to pay between 1 and 4 percent of your property’s value on maintenance, repairs, and replacements of systems or appliances each year. If your home is valued at $150,000, then you should expect to spend between $1,500 and $6,000 each year on repairs. To protect yourself from major unexpected costs, purchasing a home warranty can be a beneficial option to consider. A home warranty is an annual service contract that covers the repair or replacement of important appliances and system components that may break down over time. If you choose to purchase a home warranty, often costing between $300 and $600 a year, maintaining your home becomes more manageable.

MYTH #2: THE FIRST STEP IS TO FIND THE HOME YOU WANT TO BUY Don’t go looking for a home before you know what you can afford. If you house hunt and find your dream home is $250,000, but you are only approved for a $150,000 mortgage, you will have wasted your time and energy. Plus, this can be a disappointing start to the homebuying process. The first step is always to consider your financial situation and work with a lender to get preapproved. Getting preapproved will help you set realistic expectations about what you can afford and stop you from falling in love with the wrong home for your lifestyle. Begin the preapproval process by comparing mortgage types and benefits at elements.org/mortgage.

MYTH #3: YOU ARE REQUIRED TO PUT AT LEAST 20 PERCENT DOWN Traditional mortgages typically have a set 30year fixed-rate with a 20 percent down payment. Times have changed. Now, you have many options for the length, rate, and down payment of your mortgage loan. For example, our credit union offers a First-Time Homebuyer Program for those who have not owned a home in the past three years. Needing to put at least 20% down is in the past. If you are not a first-time homebuyer, Elements has options for fixed and adjustable rate mortgages, construction loans, and jumbo mortgages. Now that we’ve busted some of the most common myths that surround the homebuying process, we hope you are feeling more confident about purchasing a new home! Elements is here to support you throughout the process. Contact one of our Mortgage Loan Originators or visit elements.org to begin working toward making your dream a reality.

FIGHTING FRAUD ANDREW CHALKO

Vice President, Accounting & Risk Management

At Elements, we value the trust you place in us to be your credit union partner for life. We make every effort to raise awareness of scams and fraud that can put you, your family, and friends at risk. Recently, fraud by account takeovers has significantly increased across the financial services industry. Typically, this fraud occurs when consumers receive a text message, email or phone call from a fraudster posing as their bank or credit union. Oftentimes, the fraudsters will send a message asking the user to “confirm” fraud on their account. This can lead to the consumer calling and surrendering personal or account information like in the fraudulent example to the right. Sometimes, the fraudsters will additionally use clues from public social media posts or check-ins to make their claims sound even more legitimate.

18

THE ABOVE IS AN EXAMPLE OF FRAUD. THIS IS NOT ELEMENTS’ PHONE NUMBER AND YOU WILL NEVER RECEIVE TEXTS LIKE THIS ABOUT YOUR ACCOUNT.

3 ESSENTIAL STEPS TO

PREVENT FRAUD DO NOT TRUST CALLER ID ALONE

Fraudsters can spoof phone numbers including the customer service lines for Elements, 800-621-2105 and 317-276-2105, to make it look like we’re calling you. If you receive what feels like a questionable call with our caller ID, hang up and call us back directly. You can always call us 24/7.

FREEZE YOUR CREDIT

ELEMENTS WILL NEVER CALL YOU ASKING FOR THIS INFORMATION: - Online Banking Passwords or User IDs - Member Number - Online Banking Secure Access Code or One-Time Passcode - Full 16 digits of your Debit or Credit Card number* - Social Security Number* - Personal Identification Number (PIN) for your Debit or Credit cards* We may ask you to verify the last four digits of these numbers. *

If you initiate a call to Elements, we may need this information to verify your identity.

A credit freeze keeps private data in your credit files from being accessed without your approval. Freezing your credit can help prevent fraudulent credit applications, even if a fraudster has information like your birthdate and Social Security number. Contact the three major credit bureaus — Equifax, Experian and TransUnion — individually to freeze your credit. You can easily unfreeze credit temporarily when you wish to apply for new credit. This is the most proactive defense against fraudsters.

MANAGE YOUR DEBIT CARD WITH CARD CONTROL

Control your debit card with Card Control. You can create custom real-time alerts for your debit card transactions and even restrict your card if it is lost or stolen. Download the Card Control app within our Elements mobile app by selecting Card Control from the app menu or by visiting the Apple or Google Play store directly if you already have the Elements mobile banking app.

Building Up the Butler Bulldogs ELEMENTS ANNOUNCES NEW CAMPUS INVOLVEMENT

Elements is happy to announce its continued support of Butler in new and exciting ways. Recently our credit union made a capital gift to the Lacy School of Business building campaign and, as a result, received naming rights for the third floor graduate conference room within the new building. Further, we have established the Elements Financial College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Endowed Scholarship Fund at Butler University.

20

For the second year in a row, Elements is also sponsoring Butler Basketball this season. Look for us at the away game parties to be held at the new Upland Brewery in Fountain Square. We’ll be there to pass out free gifts, register fans for prizes, and answer all the questions you might have about the Butler credit card and our other products and services. Through these new efforts paired with our on-campus services, ATMs, and educational workshops, we’re proud to serve as Butler’s Credit Union. Go, Bulldogs!
