Thanksgiver

The definition of thanksgiver is one that gives thanks. And with this being the November issue, I want to be a thanksgiver all month long. In fact, there are many things to be thankful for as we close out 2022.

First and foremost, as a community, we are definitely thankful that hurricane Ian missed our beloved island, because we’re all thankful to be living in such a wonderful place. It’s great to travel, but there is nothing like that feeling when you cross the Frederica River onto St. Simons Island. There is a reason many people come for a visit, and then end up becoming a “local.” While we were fortunate to be spared, many communities in Florida will take years to get back to normal. I would encourage EIL readers to donate anything they can to help our neighbors to the south of us.

On a personal note, I am very thankful to be celebrating 20 years of publishing Elegant Island Living. I’m thankful for the EIL family. Our staff strives hard to bring you a product that we can all be proud of each month. I’m thankful for all of the wonderful businesses who advertise with EIL, as well as you, the readers, who support us by shopping with our advertisers. I’m thankful for my family. Like many of you, we dealt with some health issues

and are ending 2022 stronger than ever. I’m thankful for the many friends in my life who constantly encourage me to be the best version of myself.

How can we practice being a thanksgiver in November? Even practicing ONE act of thanksgiving each day adds up. At the end of the month, that’s 30 acts of thanksgiving. Multiply that by everyone you know and we’ll all have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Looking back over the issues we’ve done over the past year, we realized we haven’t spent much time on one of our favorite things: FOOD!

It’s been a while since we’ve shared recipes. Since Thanksgiving is right around the corner, now is the perfect time to remedy that! Instead of planning the traditional family feast, we’ve decided to talk turkey.

Fun Facts About Wild Turkey Bourbon

Wild Turkey’s roots trace to 1855, when Austin Nichols & Co., a wholesale grocer, set up shop in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. That company eventually took over what would become Wild Turkey Bourbon, now one of the country’s top-selling whiskey brands. According to company lore, Wild Turkey name sprang from a hunting expedition. A distillery executive named Thomas McCarthy brought some whiskey samples from then-owner Austin Nichols & Co. on a wild turkey hunt. According to The Guardian, his companions “liked it so much that the next year they asked him to bring some of that ‘Wild Turkey’ bourbon and the nickname soon became a famous brand.”

It’s “alright, alright, alright.” Actor Matthew McConaughey has been Wild Turkey’s creative director since 2016. The brand reportedly approached McConaughey to be a spokesperson to help them attract more female consumers and international audiences. However, the actor had bigger ideas and wanted to be more than just the face; in fact, the relationship blossomed, and he has really become more part of the Russell family of distillers. In 2018, McConaughey launched Longbranch Bourbon, a perfect pairing of Texas and Kentucky, in partnership with Wild Turkey.

or chive for more

shredded cheddar cheese

chopped

Jim (beef stick or pretzel rod)

1

Royal icing pen (for cake decorating)

PREPARATION:

Cream softened cream cheese by hand or in a stand mixer, adding shredded cheese and mixing until fully incorporated. Form mixture into a ball and place in a sheet of plastic wrap. Place the ball in the refrigerator for a few hours to firm. When firm, remove ball from fridge and unwrap. Roll in chopped

nuts to fully and evenly coat the exterior. Re-wrap in plastic and return to refrigerator. To make the head/neck, you can be creative. The method used here: a 4" to 5" piece of a Slim Jim is used for the neck/head and a “face” is then attached to that. The “face” is created by “gluing” candy eyes and an upside-down candy corn beak to a Rolo with a royal icing pen. The “face” is then glued to the Slim Jim. Allow the face/head to set by putting on a paper towel and placing into the freezer for up to 30 minutes. If not using immediately, transfer to a Ziploc bag and keep in the refrigerator with the cheese ball. When ready to serve, remove cheese ball from refrigerator, place on plate and allow to soften just long enough to be able to slide the Slim Jim into the front of the ball, making the turkey’s head. Create a “tail” by sliding pretzel sticks in the back of the ball as tail feathers. Surround with crackers & serve.

INGREDIENTS:

GALA GOBBLER •

1 container of vanilla Greek yogurt or Marzetti caramel dip

1 medium Gala apple, cored and cut into thin slices

1 medium Golden Delicious apple, cored and cut into thin slices

1 medium Granny Smith apple, cored and cut into thin slices

2 chocolate chips or candy eyes

Candy corn

Pretzel sticks or fancy toothpicks

PREPARATION:

Place open container of yogurt or caramel on serving platter. Place chocolate chips or candy eyes and upside-down candy corn as a beak in the container to make a face. Arrange apple slices around container in layers to look like feathers. Use pretzel sticks or fancy toothpicks to create the turkey’s feet.

2 tsp. garlic powder

2 tsp. onion powder

1 tsp. ground sage

1 tsp. dry thyme

2 tsp. salt

1 tsp. ground black pepper

1/2 c. all-purpose flour

1/2 c. half & half

1 small onion, chopped

coated with flour. Save excess flour and set aside. Place large pan on stovetop and add the vegetable oil and butter, melting butter and heating oil over medium heat. Once oil and butter mixture is hot, add turkey wings. Brown all surfaces of the turkey, then remove pieces from pan and place into a large baking dish. Now cook chopped vegetables in the pan over medium heat, seasoning with salt and pepper to taste, and cooking until they are translucent. Turn off stovetop, add vegetables to baking dish with turkey, reserving the oil/butter mixture. Cover baking dish with foil and bake wings for 2 hours.

For gravy: Heat butter/ oil reserved in pan over medium heat. Once mixture is hot, sprinkle in flour reserved from tossing wings, stirring continuously to brown. Slowly pour in broth, stirring to prevent lumps. Add half & half and keep stirring until well-combined. Let gravy cook over medium heat until it starts to thicken.

Remove turkey form oven and uncover. Pour gravy all over turkey, coating evenly, then cover baking dish again. Bake for an additional hour and 30 minutes. Remove from oven and let sit for 10 minutes, then serve with mashed potatoes or rice.

Flavorful smoked or roasted turkey legs are always popular at state fairs and festivals. These “caveman pops” can be eaten plain or with your favorite barbeque sauce or blue cheese dressing as a dipping sauce. Or go another direction and slow cook some legs in sweet honey and garlic to make pull-apart meat for sandwiches or to top a side dish.

PIEROGI •

FOR SERVING

1/2 c. sour cream

1 tsp. Dijon mustard

1 tsp. whole grain mustard

Salt and pepper, to taste Butter, for the pan

Dried cranberries

Chopped parsley or chives

PREPARATION:

To make dough, mix flour and salt together in a mixing bowl. Add yogurt, melted butter, and egg to another bowl and whisk to combine. Pour yogurt mixture into flour and stir until a ball of dough forms. Place dough on counter or a cutting board and knead it for a minute or so with damp hands until it is smooth and elastic. Place dough back in mixing bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Allow dough to rest for 30 minutes. For filling, in a large bowl, mix together potatoes, turkey, onion, cranberry sauce, and cheese until combined. Season to taste with salt and pepper. To make dipping sauce, whisk together sour cream, Dijon and whole grain mustard and season to taste with salt and pepper. Set aside until are ready to serve.

To assemble & cook: Bring a large pot of water to a boil. After dough has rested, roll out on a lightly floured surface until 1/4” thick. Using a 3” biscuit cutter or glass, cut out circles of dough. Place approximately 2 tsp. of filling in center of each circle. Brush edges with egg wash and then fold dough over filling, sealing edges with your fingers. Press edges together with the prongs of a fork to seal well. Set formed pierogi on a sheet tray lined with parchment paper.

Continue until all pierogi are formed. Boil pierogi, in batches, in water for about 2 minutes or until they float to the top. Remove with a slotted spoon and return to sheet tray. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add a couple tablespoons of butter. Once butter is melted, add pierogi to the pan in batches of 6-8. Cook until crispy and golden, about 2-3 minutes per side. To serve, drizzle any remaining butter from pan over pierogi. Garnish warm buttery pierogi with cranberries and herbs. Serve immediately with dipping sauce on the side.

• TURKEY STROGANOFF •

INGREDIENTS:

8 oz. egg noodles (cooked)

8 oz. button or cremini mushrooms, sliced

3 Tbsp. butter

1/2 c. onion, finely chopped

1 tsp. Dijon mustard

2 c. roasted turkey meat, chopped into bite-sized pieces

1/2 c. turkey gravy

1/8 tsp. nutmeg

1 Tbsp. fresh thyme, chopped (or 1 tsp. dried)

1 c. sour cream (room temperature)

Salt and pepper

Soy sauce (can be used to season instead of salt)

PREPARATION:

Boil egg noodles in salted water according to package directions. Heat large sauté pan on medium-high heat for 1 minute. Add mushrooms and dry sauté them (without butter or oil), shaking pan frequently so they don’t stick, approximately 3-5 minutes, until mushrooms release their moisture and begin to brown. Add butter and onion to sauté pan and cook, stirring occasionally, approximately 4 minutes, until onions begin to brown. Stir in Dijon mustard, season all with salt or soy sauce. Add turkey meat and gravy and stir to combine. Cook until heated through and sprinkle with thyme, black pepper, and nutmeg.

(You may want to add more salt/soy sauce as turkey is blander than beef usually used in stroganoff.) Turn off heat and add sour cream. If sauce needs to be thinned, add water by tablespoon.

Mix sour cream in thoroughly, taste, and add salt or other seasonings as needed. Serve over warm cooked egg noodles.

INGREDIENTS FOR EGGROLLS:

25 egg roll wrappers

1 lb. cooked turkey, cut into thin strips

2 c. mashed potatoes

2 c. stuffing

1 Tbsp. cornstarch

1/4 c. cool water

1 1/2 tsp. fresh orange juice

1 tsp. orange zest

PREPARATION:

To make the dipping sauce, combine cranberry sauce, water, orange juice and orange zest in a microwaveable bowl. Heat in microwave for 40 seconds to a minute. Carefully strain to remove any clumps or pieces of cranberry. Chill in refrigerator until ready to serve. To wrap egg rolls, start by stirring together cornstarch and water in small bowl. Lay wrappers on clean, flat surface so a corner is facing you (like a diamond). Dip fingers in cornstarch water and spread on each edge of egg roll wrapper.

Spread 1/2 Tbsp. mashed potatoes in corner closest to. You. Top with 1/2 Tbsp. stuffing and a few small pieces of turkey. Lift bottom corner up and begin to roll away from you, making sure to tuck the corner. Under as you roll. At the halfway point, fold the left side in and the right side toward the center. Continue rolling away from you until only the final corner is ready to roll. Dip your fingers in the cornstarch mixture again and brush it over final corner. Finish the roll, brush a little more of the cornstarch mixture along the seam, and place seam side down. Make sure to roll tightly, so they don’t fall apart when fried. To fry, fill a pot with 4-5” of cooking oil. Heat oil to 350F. Gently add egg rolls to hot oil, frying in batches of no more than 3 or 4 at a time, turning occasionally. Fry until golden brown, approximately 2 minutes. Place on paper towels to drain and cool. Serve immediately with cranberry dipping sauce.

Believeit or not, another holiday season is upon us. And that means Santa Claus will be back in town before you know it. To make sure no one has a blue Christmas, we’ve compiled our annual list of holiday happenings so you can make plans for seasonal shopping, festive events, and visits with the big guy himself.

The Joke that Topped the Charts

“Blue Christmas” was first recorded in 1948 by country singer, TV host and actor Doye O’Dell. A version by Ernest Tubbs went to #1 on the charts in 1950. It was a song Elvis never wanted to record. According to backup singer Millie Kirkland (the singer of the iconic “wooowee-wooo” part of the song) in an interview she did with the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in 2012, when producers told Elvis he had to record the song, he turned to the musicians and said, “Let’s get this over with – just do anything,

do something silly.” That’s when Kirkland sang, “wooo-wee-wooo” and did it throughout the entire song. She recalled, “When we got through, we all laughed and said, ‘Well, that’s one record that the record company will never release.’”

Although “Blue Christmas” was recorded for Elvis’ Christmas Album in 1957 and fans loved it, it wasn’t available as a single for another seven years. When the single was released in December 1964, it went to #1 on Billboard’s Christmas Singles Chart and would

be re-released every year for the rest of Elvis’ career. The song was such a big hit that songwriters Johnson & Hayes estimated they generated more royalties in the first year of Elvis’ version than they had in all of the other versions in nine years combined.

Elvis’ performance of “Blue Christmas” for his 1968 Comeback TV special is the only video footage that exists of Elvis singing any Christmas song. It ranked #7 in Rolling Stone’s Reader’s Poll of the Best Christmas Songs of All Time.

That’s Entertainment!

Incase you haven’t guessed, the spirit of Elvis will be part of this year’s holiday festivities. Since the recent Baz Luhrmann movie has marked a resurgence of interest in Elvis Presley and a couple new events on the Golden Isles’ December calendar include Christmas classics by The King, this is a great place to start.

The Georgia Elvis Festival, a production of ETAFestivals.com, officially licensed by Elvis Presley Enterprises, and presented by I-95 Toyota, will be at Epworth by the Sea on St. Simons Island Thursday, December 1 through Saturday, December 3.

The festival kicks off with Thursday afternoon show, “Elvis: The Greatest Hits!” Award-winning Elvis tribute artists including Bill Cherry, Ben Thompson, David Lee, Cote Deonath, Michael Cullipher, Alex Mitchell, Ted Torres, Braxton Sykes and Dana Myers will bring you a revival of Elvis’ music and the songs that influenced his career. Thursday night, “Elvis in Georgia” will feature

Alex Mitchell, Cliff Wright and talented young local performer Braxton Sykes showcasing music from key points in Elvis’ life, from the 50s through the 70s. Friday morning, Bill Cherry, Michael Cullipher, Dana Myers, and Alex Mitchell pay tribute to Presley’s Southern gospel roots with “Elvis Gospel.” Later that afternoon, David Lee, Ted Torres, and Cliff Wright will take the stage in “Elvis: The Icon,” while World Champion Cote Deonath and Ultimate Champion Ben Thompson highlight the 60s era of Elvis’ career from movies to the bright lights of Vegas in that evening’s “Elvis Is Back!” Saturday afternoon is the “Elvis Christmas” show featuring Dean Z, Ben Thompson and Cote Deonath performing songs from Elvis’ popular Christmas albums. Saturday night’s grand finale, “Elvis: The King!” features the best of the best: Ultimate Elvis Champion Bill Cherry and Dean Z. It’s sure to be a weekend to remember!

B & B T u r n s T e n

B&B Design and Consign first opened its doors on St. Simons Island in November 9, 2012.

During that time, Brian Elrod and Bob Spann (the Bs behind B&B) have truly created something special. Customer Ann McKinney calls B&B her “‘feel good place.”

She says, “From the dogs that greet you to the friendly and knowledgeable staff, I can say as

a consignor and a buyer, there’s nothing else like B&B on St. Simons or in the area.” And based on B&B’s continued success, Ann is certainly not the only one who feels that way! In celebration of B&B’s 10th Anniversary, Elegant Island Living sat down with the store’s owners to learn more about how the store began and their experience in the Golden Isles over the past decade.

66 ELE GANT ISLAND LIVING

Friends for 20+ years, Brian and Bob began this venture each with their own MBAs and years of experience in their respective fields of banking and healthcare. Brian was the small business banker helping Bob’s physicians finance, expand, and diversify their business. When asked how the business came about, they explained, “Given our innate decorating abilities, many of the doctors asked for assistance decorating their offices and waiting rooms, usually on a very limited budget. The limited budget led us to estate sales, hotel furniture liquidators, as well as consignment stores. However, consignment stores quickly became the go-to for quality stylish pieces at affordable

prices.” It was this market research that led the duo to the realization that a furniture and home accessories consignment store on St Simons Island would fill a niche for gently used furniture and home accessories. They were certainly on the mark!

Not only did B&B fill a niche on the island, but it is also part of an industry with explosive growth. According to a CNBC Report, “The consignment Industry is predicted to exceed $53B in revenue for 2022.” The National Association of Retail and Thrift Stores, states the US secondhand market will more than double by 2026. Increased costs of furniture & home accessories, scarcity of new inventory and long wait times

for new furniture are all factors that have brought consumers into consignment stores. Several years ago, these individuals would not have considered gently used furniture as an option. An influx of new customers keeps Brian and Bob on their toes. The consignment industry, like the fashion industry, will always be a slave to demands in current decorating styles, colors that are in vogue, and upcoming trends. This requires B&B Design and Consign to read, listen, and assess trends for the Coastal Georgia market. Brian explains, “Every market is different, but the Golden Isles has an interesting population mix of full time owners, second home owners (many who are

snowbirds), and tourists. Each come with their own expectations to consign and purchase. We see demand increase in October of each year when snowbirds return for the winter. They haven’t been in their homes for six months and usually like to make changes or updates to their décor.” When asked about current trends, they respond, “We’ve seen a continued trend moving from less formal to a relaxed coastal style that fits into many of the lifestyles here in the Golden Isles.”

The discerning shopper and bargain hunter will find B&B is a veritable treasure trove of unique items, including art. Bob says, “Artwork is the biggest seller at B&B and there is a great

68 ELE GANT ISLAND LIVING
Brian Elrod Bob Spann

art community here. We have consigned artwork of most of the prominent artists in the Golden Isles. We also offer many nice pieces that are prints, limited prints, artist proof prints, and giclées (prints on canvas). Subject matter, style, and material are quite wide ranging. We sell artwork for most any décor you can imagine.” Additionally, because B&B’s consignors have lived around the world and traveled extensively, their acquisitions contribute to the rich diversity of items carried in the shop. Some of these items include a complete set of Turkish copper kitchen utensils and sculpture usually found in Metropolitan Museum shops. You’ll even find fantastic pieces hanging from the ceiling! Bob and Brian had to put up a sign reminding customers to look up so they wouldn’t miss their selection of chandeliers! When asked if there are any finds they’ve just had to keep for themselves, Bob responds, “Too many to name! One that stands out is the conquistador figurine that is used on our Facebook page and has been featured in several of our ads in Elegant Island Living.”

B&B’s customers are just as much a treasure as the store’s inventory. Brian was spot on when he said, “The warmth and friendliness people of the Golden Isles are its most endearing attraction.” He added, “Our customers have quickly become our friends. It’s not unusual to exchange favorite recipes or be asked to provide referrals for local restaurants and businesses.” Not only do B&B shoppers appreciate Brian and Bob for the warm and welcoming atmosphere they’ve created and

NO VEMBER 2022 69

the top-notch inventory they carry, but their consignors also highly recommend them and appreciate their services. Bob and Barb Gilmore shared this glowing review, “Selling furniture and fine art is a big deal. From the very beginning we felt like we could trust these guys to know what sells and at the right price. We never, ever, had to worry about getting paid. Their bookkeeping and accountability are without question.”

Bob and Brian also believe in giving back to the community. In particular, they are big supporters and beneficiaries of the work done by the Humane Society, as are their store greeters Lucy and Harper Lee, whose litter mates were adopted through the Atlanta Humane Society. Prior to the opening of The Big Flea (the not-for-profit retail shop that benefits the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia), B&B Design & Consign conducted an Annual Sidewalk Sale & Mobile Adoption Event each May. Those eight Sidewalk Sales raised over $10K to support our furry friends in South Coastal Georgia. B&B customers are also generous donating cash in the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia’s donation box at their cash registers. B&B currently donates items to The Big Flea, St. Vincent de Paul and Hello GoodBuy, all non-profit

organizations that provide important services to those in need, both four-legged and twolegged, within our community.

When asked if there are any tips for bargain hunters, Brian and Bob offer the following: “Generally, the prices at consignment shops start 50% to 60% off the retail price. Savvy shoppers know this and frequent B&B regularly. B&B keeps a running “Wish List” to get in touch with customers when a specific item comes into the shop.” They add, “Given our price structure reduces every 25 days, we’ll keep our fingers crossed for customers choosing to play the waiting game! However, as one of our customers says. ‘Feel free to ride the wave, but be careful not to wipe out!’”

With the holidays approaching, there are some things B&B shoppers and consignors

If Your Home is Not Becoming to You, Come to Us

Family owned business with over 50 years of experience in the residential painting industry

should keep in mind.

In November, B&B consignment will include upscale Christmas décor. While fine china doesn’t sell throughout the year, B&B does consign several traditional holiday patterns, so keep an eye out for any pieces you might need for replacements or to add to your holiday table. Additionally, B&B is the sole retailer for Trapp Candles within a 25-mile radius. These popular scented candles always prove to be a perfect gift at the holidays, or as a hostess or birthday gift throughout the year. They have a wonderful selection of enticing aromas!

B&B Design & Consign has been an excellent addition to the shopping experience on St. Simons Island and to the community in general. We appreciate Brian and Bob taking the time to talk to us during this busy season and wish them all the best for many more years. Stop by and do some shopping with them at 2483 Demere Rd #101. Store hours are 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. You can reach the store by phone at 912.268.4940 or visit their website at bandbdesignconsign.com. Steve Bullington knows clothes. Really. This Georgia native has been working in the fashion industry since he was 15 years old. And without giving Steve’s age away, we can safely say that means he’s got about a half century of experience.

NO VEMBER 2022 73

Growing up in a family with a handful of sisters, Steve freely admits that money was tight, and clothing often came in the form of hand-me-downs. He worked odd jobs and at one point had the largest paper route in Clayton County so he could buy his own clothes at Sears when he went to visit his grandparents.

Back in those days before malls, Steve went into a local men’s store and asked if they were hiring. Steve was advised that due to state laws the store couldn’t hire him until he was 16 years old. So, being an enterprising young man, Steve told them he would work for free. He was compensated with clothing from the store that sold golf sweaters and other attire made popular at that time by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. Eventually he moved on to work at another department store selling brands like Izod and Gant, and with other men’s stores in Florida. Then came Ralph Lauren.

In 1971, Ralph Lauren opened his first Polo store in Beverly Hills. Steve went to work at Muse’s Clothing Company in the city’s first Ralph Lauren store. He was the Polo buyer and worked to open two Polo stores. In the

early 1980s, Steve visited Sea Island. While he enjoyed his time there, he didn’t really ever have the chance to explore St. Simons Island. During a later visit, he stayed at Queen’s Court and fell in love with the island and decided to move here.

At that time, Steve was approached by Scott Hudgens about bringing a Polo store to the

new mall in Brunswick that was being built to replace the one that had burned down. They would even build the store and finance the inventory. While Ralph Lauren wasn’t interested in opening a store in Brunswick, Steve was given the go-ahead to open a men’s store that looked like a Polo store in the new mall. And so, in October of 1984, only a couple months after moving to the island, Steve opened his clothing store in the Brunswick Mall. His capable manager at the time was none other than Amy Lovin, former Sea Island employee, beloved teacher, and community theatre diva.

However, it wasn’t long before the mall changed hands, and they were advised that rent would be doubling. Steve was in New York buying for Fall 1985 and while out for dinner with some Ralph Lauren execs, they began talking about a new division that would be opening focused specifically on country clubs and resorts. They wanted Steve to be a part of it. So, that was the direction life took him. The local store closed, and Steve ended up spending a total of 22 years with Ralph Lauren around 2000. In fact, he was the company’s first salesman of the year. Steve left Ralph Lauren and spent some time with Nautica and doing other things.

74 ELE GANT ISLAND LIVING
NO VEMBER 2022 75

Then came 9-11 and the whole world changed. For him. For everyone.

It wasn’t long before Steve found his footing in the fashion industry once again though. In 2003, he was offered a men’s showroom on the women’s floor of the Atlanta apparel mart. It was from there that the Bullington clothing line emerged, with Steve designing and making his own brand of apparel. While his Ralph Lauren roots clearly show through in the classic styles he offers, Steve is clear that with the Bullington line, he’s not trying to be everything to everybody. He offers classic, traditional menswear for the resort, country club, and lodge experience.

The Bullington line originated because Steve discovered that his customers didn’t want logos on their clothing. He began making golf shirts accordingly, then expanded to include sport shirts, and now offers an entire collection, including sweaters and vests of all types. The Bullington store also offers leather luggage and unique gifts. As Steve describes it, “Bullington is a classic, traditional collection of menswear that never goes out of style. It is always in good taste and is continuously discovered by new generations.” Multiple merchandising awards won by Bullington during their 19 year history prove that Steve not only produces quality clothes but knows his market well.

Steve opened the Bullington store in Frederica North Shopping Plaza two years ago. By his side and often at the shop’s front d oor is charming greeter, Rosie, his 3-yearold rescue pup. When asked how St. Simons Island differs from other markets, Steve says that men here are looking for a more laidback style with perfect fit. The styles you find in his store cater to the island lifestyle, weekend hunting and fishing trips, and even our collective love of the UGA Bulldogs. Gift items that range from humidors to knives to shaving sets and luxurious leather products are designed for those who have a keen eye for quality and refined tastes. Even the candles smell exquisite!

Some must-haves for the fall and winter seasons are the Cumberland field vests and jackets, and long-sleeved sport shirts. You can’t go wrong with any of the vests and plaid button-downs, honestly! Cozy brushedcotton flannels are warm and stylish too. If you’re looking for a bargain, be sure to check the Bullington sale racks for some great deals. If you need help finding the perfect gift or determining fit, Steve is happy to assist you. Stop by the store at 3600 Frederica Road between 10:00 a.m and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday or shop the website at stevebullington.com.

TIME TO TEE OFF

In addition to the traditional Thanksgiving holiday, there’s another celebration on St. Simons Island in November for which we give thanks: The RSM Classic. Now in its 13th year, this highly anticipated fall PGA TOUR event, hosted by Davis Love III and the Davis Love Foundation, draws some of the world’s most elite golfers to the Golden Isles. Played at Sea Island Golf Club, this event is contested on both the Seaside and Plantation courses, offering challenging play with stunning ocean and marsh views, as well as incredible amenities, such as access to the 17,000-squarefoot, state-of-the-art Golf Performance Center.

We hope that you’ll join us in welcoming our victorious Presidents Cup US Team Captain and his fellow Team RSM member and assistant captain (and next year’s Ryder Cup US Team Captain) Zach Johnson back to their home course by attending the tournament they helped begin. From the

time of its inception in 2010, Love’s vision was to provide PGA Tour players with an enjoyable, yet still challenging, test at Sea Island Golf Club within a relaxed setting that offers a wonderful experience for not only the pros and their caddies, but for their families, sponsors, volunteers, media, and spectators too. The tournament is also ripe with charitable giving opportunities that enrich our community. Spending the day out on these gorgeous grounds with family and friends is a highlight of the season for many locals and visitors alike.

Sea Island President and CEO Scott Steilen says, “The RSM Classic not only increases awareness of Sea Island across the country and around the world but hosting it each year also helps solidify our position as one of the top golf resorts in the United States. From a community perspective, The Classic generates incredible financial support for area charities through the Davis Love III

Foundation, creates an undeniable sense of pride and commitment from our residents, and showcases the beauty of our coastal setting in the fall, when people may not typically consider coming to visit the Georgia coast.”

When offered the opportunity, partners from outside the region definitely welcome the chance to visit. Jeffrey B. Freitas, President/ CEO of M3COM, says, “The RSM Classic allows M3COM to be surrounded by world class organizations, business leaders, and the great people of the Golden Isles. Furthermore, The RSM Classic and DLF give M3COM the opportunity to play a small part in assisting the youth of the region through charitable giving and participation. The RSM Classic has become the highlight event of M3COM’s year!”

In addition to the extensive tourism impact that positively affects our community, the RSM Classic has a far-reaching social impact

78 ELE GANT ISLAND LIVING

as the Davis Love Foundation’s largest fundraiser. This is primarily thanks to the incredible support of the Golden Isles community, local and national business partners, generous donors and RSM, the company Love calls without hesitation “the best title sponsor in golf.” One of those local business partners is Synovus Bank. R. Wayne Johnson, Market President of Synovus shared, “We’re thrilled to be a part of the RSM Classic and support the Davis Love Foundation. Synovus is committed to strengthening the communities we serve through our charitable giving and team member outreach. Our sponsorship of the RSM Classic not only allows us to ensure a wonderful experience for patrons and PGA TOUR players but also deepens community relationships and meaningfully impacts our region.”

Founded in 2005, the Davis Love Foundation supports local, regional, and national community-based programs that focus on children and families. Since the tournament began through last year, the Foundation surpassed total charitable giving of $28 million, with most of the benefiting charities based here in the Golden Isles. Kris Maichle, General Manager of Hodnett Cooper Vacation Rentals, says that type of giving back is precisely the reason his organization has been a proud partner of the Davis Love Foundation and The RSM Classic since its inception in 2010.

“Our founder, Roy Hodnett, was powered by the idea of being a servant leader and his impact as a steward of our community continues to have a lasting effect. Our partnership with The RSM Classic allows us to express gratitude to our hard-working staff, their families, vendors, and valued property owners by sharing the unique experience of world class golf competing in an intimate setting.” Maichle continues, “Likewise, our partnership with the Davis Love Foundation as a family foundation, is a continuation of Roy’s ideals for our company; to support and empower the community and local programs such as Boys and Girls Club or the Special Olympics. The impact the Davis Love Foundation, Davis, and Mark have had as ambassadors of the Golden Isles makes it a simple decision to continue our partnership knowing much of the investment will be used to improve the lives of children and families in our community and beyond.”

In addition to up-close viewing of four competitive rounds of exceptional golf by some of the world’s most elite golfers, tournament week features a variety of events and showcases of the best the Golden Isles has to offer. From fun activities kids and casual spectators to opportunities for the most avid golf fans to meet PGA TOUR pros and witness competitive play on the greens, there’s something for everyone. November 11 is Veterans Day. This national holiday is dedicated to honoring American veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. It is observed on this

date because in 1918, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month an armistice went into effect ending hostilities in “The Great War,” or “the war to end all wars,” as World War I was then known. Unfortunately, that was not our last war, nor the end of sacrifices made by many men and women in the service of our country. On Veterans Day, we honor them all.

Schools and government offices are closed for the holiday, as are many businesses, so it’s a perfect opportunity for your family to show support for veterans in our community by attending the annual Veterans Day Parade on St. Simons Island. Organized by the Veterans Council of the Golden Isles, the parade begins at 10:30 a.m. and is immediately followed by a ceremony in Neptune Park. This year, there will be a speaker from Fort Stewart and World War II veterans will receive special recognition. Your support is greatly appreciated, but it’s also important to note that our local veterans need that support beyond Veterans Day.

underground utilities work is completed and concrete pads are poured for the homes. On site in Brunswick, the interiors of the homes will be completed, the component parts for an additional 10 ADA compliant tiny houses will be assembled, and the 30' x 60' community center will be built.

Groundbreaking was held on the corner of G Street and MLK Jr. Boulevard in Brunswick for Golden Isles Veterans Village a year ago. The non-profit initiative and partnership with Nine Line Foundation and Rotary International District 6920 is building a village of at least 30 tiny homes for unhoused veterans and a community center where they can receive physical and mental health support, educational classes, and job training. Students from Rolling Meadows High School and Buffalo Grove High School in Illinois and volunteers with the South Newport Baptist Church Mission Build here in Townsend, GA, have worked to complete wall and roofing components and assemble 20 of the tiny houses. Those houses will be able to be moved to their final location once

To complete the project and provide this safe and supportive environment for currently unhoused veterans, Golden Isles Veterans Village still needs your support. They recently held a dinner at Halyards and auction to kick off their fundraising campaign and are reaching out to the community. Our veterans have sacrificed greatly to protect and preserve our precious freedom and way of life. For their service and devotion, they deserve a hand up when needed from those who can afford to give. By helping them become self-sufficient and selfsustaining, this enables them to escape the battlefield of homelessness and despair. If you would like to show your support in a lasting manner, you can purchase a brick (or multiple bricks) to pave the walkway in Golden Isles Veterans Village. Not only is the brick a lasting testament to the fact that you care about the project and those it serves, it can also be used to memorialize a loved one, or recognize an active duty or veteran friend or family member. Bricks can be purchased online at bricksrus.com/donorsite/givv. For more information about Golden Isles Veterans Village and ways that you can volunteer or donate to help complete this important community project, visit goldenislesveteransvillage.org.

To all of our veterans, thank you for your service. We appreciate you not just on Veterans Day, but every day.

RSM’s Birdies Fore Love Program Makes Impact Across America

In this issue of Elegant Island Living, the Davis Love Foundation (DLF) continues its partner and charity spotlight with a focus on RSM’s corporate Birdies Fore Love program.

RSM US LLP, the nation’s leading provider of audit, tax and consulting services focused on the middle market, has been the title sponsor of The RSM Classic since its inception in 2010. Through its involvement, RSM has made a significant impact on the Golden Isles and far beyond.

RSM, aligned with the stewardship values of the PGA TOUR and the Davis Love Foundation, established two charitable programs – Power of Love: Birdies Fore Love and RSM Birdies Fore Love. Through the Power of Love: Birdies Fore Love program, RSM employees raise funds to help

children and families and make an impact in the communities where they live and work. Employee champions in each office coordinate fun activities to encourage participation and help meet our fundraising goals. This program is a major driving factor in The RSM Classic generating more than $28 million in charitable giving in just twelve years.

With the success of this program, RSM decided to expand its charitable reach and created the RSM Birdies Fore Love program, an on-course competition, between touring pros. During much of the fall season, RSM gives the player making the most birdies a check

for his charity of choice. At the end of the season, the top three players with the most cumulative birdies each receive a check for charity. This program generates an additional charitable impact of $1 million annually.

Here’s just one way the program has made an impact: PGA TOUR player Sung Kang made

In its first twelve years, The RSM Classic, hosted by Davis Love III, has raised nearly $29 million to support local and national charities. The 2022 PGA TOUR event is November 14-20 at Sea Island Golf Club. For partnership information, regardless of the size of your business, contact John McKenzie, Director of Sales, at jmckenzie@dlovefoundation.com or visit rsmclassic.com.

KGIB TRASH DASH

The Golden Isles Track Club recently donated $3500 to Keep Golden Isles Beautiful to support the group’s annual Trash Dash plogging event, in which participants pick up litter as they run, jog and walk. This donation, made possible through funds raised by GITC’s annual 4th of July

Festival race, shows GITC’s commitment to community betterment and highlights the connection between outdoor activity, exercise, and litter removal efforts.

MARKING A MILESTONE

Brunswick Mayor Cosby Johnson recently joined Board members and community supporters of St. Mark’s Towers to officially designate October 6 as St. Mark’s Towers Day in Brunswick. The HUDsubsidized residence community offering affordable housing and a recreation center for older adults celebrated its 40th anniversary with a reception for residents and guests and a ribbon cutting ceremony presented by the Brunswick-Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce. St. Mark’s Towers Foundation President Peter Schmidt said, “We are so grateful for

Cottage 342, W. Seventeenth Street, Sea Island

Occupying most of the 17th Street block, this prized and revered property extends from Sea Island Drive all the way to the marsh. For families who enjoy staying together and being close to one another, Lune de Miel (Cottage 342) is lovingly placed on the land with the precision of an artist, an apt metaphor given the materials, furnishings and appointments dating from the 17th century. The enchanting grounds contain a moated gazebo with Louis XIII French limestone mantel (circa 1672), alfresco grill, pergola, 3 pools, bath house with laundry room, basketball court, chess court, Dovecote (circa 16th-17th century), circular fire pit, putting green, chipping tee box, Bocce Ball court, shuffleboard and long northwesterly marsh vistas. Twelve bedrooms (9 with fireplaces), each with their own personality, 17 fireplaces, an Irish pub with 17th century Roman carved black slate fireplace. The English Victorian pine front bar has the original mahogany counter top (circa 1849) from a tavern in Birmingham, England. The back bar is from Fritzingers Hotel in Coopersburg, PA (circa 1883). Walk-in cooler. The Game Room/Parlor has an 1886 Brunswick “Jewel” pool table and a Rock-ola maple and hardwood shuffleboard table. Adding to the authenticity of the home’s appointments, a 19th century bronze and ormolu French chandelier adorns the brick lined Wine Cellar. A solid European red oak and hand forged iron door (circa 1850) leads to the Theatre with rare Italian barrel-vaulted ceiling (circa 17th century). The family room limestone fireplace (circa 1600-1750) is from the Chateau Fountain in Sologne, France and belonged to the family of the wife of former French President Jacques Chirac. Indeed, this is a grand residence yet with a warm, comfortable loving ambience. Lune de Miel is the sequel of a couple’s spark of beautiful love where lasting memories were made. $19,500,000

Celebrating a Cumberland Island Treasure: Dungeness

This year Cumberland Island National Seashore celebrates its Golden Anniversary. Over the past five decades, visitors have enjoyed the natural beauty and cultural assets of Georgia’s southernmost barrier island. A favorite area for visitors is Dungeness, located on the southern end of the island, where two residences built by nationally prominent families once stood.

General Nathanael Greene, hero of the American Revolution, acquired property on Cumberland Island a few years before his death in 1786. Around 1799, his widow Catharine and her second husband Phineas Miller moved to Cumberland, after putting their property near Savannah up for sale. In the early 1800s, the Millers built an imposing four-story residence with exterior walls made of tabby. Known as Dungeness House, the building

became a point of reference for coastal navigators because of its extraordinary height.

The Greene-Miller house burned in 1866, and the property was later acquired by Thomas M. Carnegie, brother of steel industrialist Andrew Carnegie. In 1884-1885, he and his wife Lucy built a spacious Queen Anne-style home as a winter retreat. After Thomas died in 1886, Lucy continued to make

additions to the house, eventually more than doubling its footprint. The Carnegie children also built homes on the island: Plum Orchard, The Cottage, Greyfield, and Stafford. From November to May each year, the Carnegie family and friends enjoyed the natural beauty of the island and the recreational facilities built by Lucy, including an indoor pool, a squash court, and stables. Lucy Carnegie died in 1916, and in time the mansion was closed due

to the cost of upkeep. It burned in 1959, echoing the fate of the original structure. The impressive ruins are a reminder of the grandeur of bygone days.

Featured this month from the Coastal Georgia Historical Society archives are pictures of the Greene-Miller house ruins in the 1880s and the Carnegie mansion in the 20th century. Also shown is a 1960 color photograph of the Dungeness ruins.

Coastal Georgia Historical Society presents this article and images from our archives as part of our mission “to connect people to Coastal Georgia’s dynamic history.” The Society operates the iconic St. Simons Lighthouse Museum and the World War II Home Front Museum, housed in the Historic Coast Guard Station at East Beach.
