PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Get 1% Better Every Day

T

he past few months have certainly been strange for all of us. It’s as if we’re stuck like Bill Murray was in the movie, Groundhog Day. Every day seems to be the same. Our way of life has been disrupted and we are on a continual loop. I’m sure some of you have decided to do something positive during this time. We’ve all had that moment when we declare, at least to ourselves, “Enough is enough – I’m going to make some changes in my life!” Maybe you want to drop a few pounds or pay off some debt or reduce your time on Facebook. So you start planning and scheming. You tell yourself, “This time is going to be different.” But then … You had a long day and just can’t make it to the gym. An unexpected expense came up. Or you got a FB friend request and find two hours have passed while you caught up. Within a matter of days, your ambition has disappeared and you’re back to where you started.

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

It’s time to get off the self-improvement roller coaster. Instead of trying to make radical changes in a short amount of time, just make small steps forward every day that will gradually lead to the progress you want. Each day, focus on getting 1% better at whatever it is you’re trying to improve. That’s it. Just 1% It might not seem like much, but those 1% improvements start compounding. In the

beginning, your progress may be so minimal you won’t even notice a difference. But gradually you’ll start seeing yourself getting closer to your goals. It may take months, but the positive momentum will move you for-

ward if you just stick to it and get 1% better each day. As Benjamin Franklin said, “Little strokes fell great oaks.” So if you want to change things up, ask yourself this question every single day: What’s the one small thing I can start doing today that would improve my life? Then, start small. I’m going to start by cutting down on watching so much TV! Instead, I’ll spend 1% of each day cleaning up around my house. Hey, wait a minute; The Andy Griffith Show just came on! It’s only 30 minutes …

During these uncertain and challenging times, we need to give our local hospitality service workers and restaurant employees a loud round of applause. They have been providing us with the comfort of seeing the familiar faces (even in masks) of our favorite servers, bartenders, and chefs while we enjoy the food we love, whether we socially distance in their establishments or pick it up to eat at home. We have appreciated their dedication and know that their families are important to them too. We reached out to some of these fine folks to see what they make for their own family and friends when they’re home. They were generous enough to share some of their favorite recipes with us – giving us everything from frog legs to fudge. And to sweeten it up just a little, we’re going to have dessert first! 48

Every year for birthdays she made me and my siblings a birthday dessert of our choosing. She absolutely loved the holidays and enjoyed making every one of them special. Strawberry Shortcake was my pick and I asked for it every year.” What makes this different from other strawberry shortcake recipes is the sweet drop biscuits. hen Matt and Miller Dart took over Pierce & Parker Interiors from Jack and Fran Pierce in 2016, they knew they had a lot to learn from her parents about running a furniture store and interior design studio. “Miller grew up at Pierce & Parker and she has a great eye for design trends, and I had some relevant consulting experience helping retail brands grow their business, but we really focused for the first few years on learning the fundamentals of this business that my in-laws created and grew so successfully for 30 plus years,” Matt recalls. (continues)

But a changing market and a global pandemic created an opportunity for growth, both in the creation of a new store focused on outdoor furniture next door and in a dramatic renovation of their existing showroom. According to Matt, “We knew that outdoor furniture was a huge growth opportunity, so we wanted to invest in more space so that we could provide the best possible experience for customers interested in outdoor living.” So after their neighbor, The Stitchery, moved down the street, they took over that space to create Pierce & Parker Outdoor. Pierce & Parker Outdoor will feature one of the largest selections of premium outdoor furniture in the Southeast, with more than 4000 square feet devoted exclusively to outdoor furniture. “Outdoor living is a big consideration in most new construction around here, and we really want to inspire our customers and show them what is possible. There have been so many advances in materials, fabrics, and cushions – not to mention styling and design – over the last five years. Your outdoor living and dining spaces can really look every bit as stylish as your indoor areas.” Pierce & Parker Outdoor will feature a large assortment of collections from Brown Jordan, Lloyd Flanders, Summer Classics, Tropitone, Seaside Casual, and more. They will also carry a wide variety of outdoor rugs, pillows, and lighting selections. Designer Lori Harden adds, “When I started my career, outdoor furniture was all function, no design. And even then, it didn’t really hold up for long. Now, people are spending more and more time on porches and patios, and today there are so many more options for them to create really beautiful outdoor living spaces.” 56

and we can cycle items to the sale room so that customers can go hunting for some great deals,” Matt said. Carson Nalley, a Junior Designer with the firm, is really excited about what happens when customers walk in the front door. “We used to have people come in and look around for us, because you couldn’t see the counter from the front door. We’ve moved some walls to change that, so hopefully it will be more inviting when you walk in!”

Because of a slowdown in domestic manufacturing due to the pandemic, Matt discovered that it was difficult to find enough inventory to fill the showroom. It became an easy decision to temporarily move all of their existing products to the new outdoor space, freeing up the “Interiors” side for some exciting renovations. For instance, the current design center will more than double in size, with new space dedicated to rug and carpet displays, as well as even more fabrics and wallpapers. There will also be space dedicated to showcasing custom drapery options, premium linens, and more. Creating an open, inviting space

In addition, the upstairs area will now be opened to the store, creating an inviting loft area. One side of the loft will be a dedicated sale room. “We actually spent a lot of time and effort on creating a great place to display clearance items. We thought that it could create some excitement where we can keep things very fresh in the store

According to Miller Dart, this renovation and expansion is just another step in her vision of what Pierce & Parker stands for. “We want customers to be inspired when they walk in our store, and to see all the options for what their home can be: somewhere beautiful and comfortable that they love to spend time in every day. We can help them with so much of that vision, from the floor to the ceiling. And that goes for new construction, renovations, or just freshening up their existing space.” Matt and Miller invite you to stop by Pierce & Parker at 3413 Frederica Road on St. Simons Island to see the exciting new renovations and inventory for yourself. Pet Care in a Pandemic b y

r. Jim Rich of Seaside Veterinary Hospital remembers how it all began, “No one in my family was in the animal health field, but we always had pets around. I’ve always loved being in the company of animals and other animal lovers and I have always been very curious about animal health. I grew up knowing from very early on that this is what I wanted to do: I wanted to be a veterinarian.” According to Dr. Rich, the best thing about being a veterinarian apart from being surrounded by all kinds of wonderful pets is the unspoken camaraderie between pet lovers. He loves meeting pet owners, being able to share their joys, and helping them through difficult times. Conversely, he says, “The hardest part of this job is when you have to share heartbreak-

ing news to pet owners.” Dr. Rich is a beloved dad to a 14 year-old Yorkie named Bonnie and recently said goodbye to his beautiful senior Australian Shepherd named Lizzie. “As a fellow pet owner, there’s an unspoken empathy. As a veterinarian, you become a trusted friend to both the pets and their owners. You see them grow together and you hear about the good days, the silly moments, the scary moments, and everything in between. You see and treat their pets as your own and you become very caring and protective of them.” Coronavirus is another difficulty veterinarians must now also face. For Seaside Veterinary Hospital, being able to provide animal care while keeping pet owners and staff safe is an absolute must. The animal hospital continues to accept appointments by phone at 912.638.7600 or through their website at seasidevets.com. Once pet owners arrive for the appointment, they are asked to call in and give their parking spot number so a staff member can pick up their animals from their vehicles without entering the building, except in extreme circumstances. Staff members are also taking necessary precautions like social distancing and are required to wear protective gear such as masks, gloves, and other PPE. Despite the bigger issues caused by the pandemic, the recent uptick in pet adoptions has been a welcomed silver lining for animal lovers everywhere. As families found themselves having to stay at home or being able to spend more time at home, pets have enjoyed more time with their owners. Many pets who spent their days feeling abandoned at the shelters have now found new loving homes to call their own. (continues)

“It’s definitely wonderful to hear so many more animals are being adopted and receiving much more attention”, said Dr. Rich. The doctor shared his wisdom with new pet owners saying, “It’s important to make sure new pets receive proper health care from the get go. I always encourage new pet owners to go in for an evaluation, make sure they have all the vaccinations their pets need, as well as preventative care for things like fleas and ticks. Unchecked and without proper care early on, these things can become bigger problems very quickly.” One example both new and old pet owners tend to miss is dental disease. “A lot of people simply don’t realize that pets, dogs in particular, are prone to dental issues. It’s one of those things that even truly experienced pet owners tend to overlook,” explained Dr. Rich. Dental care is actually one of the doctor’s most sought after services, especially for dogs. “Dogs can have advanced dental diseases and not show any signs of pain. What usually happens is that they still eat but most dog owners don’t notice their pets aren’t chewing their food anymore,” he continued. Although it is often overlooked, there are some easy-to-spot signs that your pet may be experiencing some dental issues. The doctor recommends checking your pet’s teeth and

seasons which is why year-round protection is vital,” he explained.

watching out for foul odor coming from their mouths. Left unchecked, advanced dental disease can lead to discomfort and bacteria overgrowth that can cause serious periodontal diseases. Bacteria can get into the bloodstream and in some severe cases can cause serious problems, like bone loss, and jaw issues. Dr. Rich and his team regularly do dental checks when pets are in for their appointment and offer routine dental care to avoid complications down the road. Another thing Dr. Rich points out is that many new pet owners may not realize is the fact that dogs and cats can get fleas and ticks even when kept indoors. “It’s a common misconception. The reality is that pets can get infested even when they are kept indoors. It may be from contact with other pets. It could be from rodents bringing it into the home. It could be picked up from walking your pets outside. It could even be from moving into a new home. Contrary to what some may think, these pests can also make it through colder

For those adopting older pets or incorporating them with existing pets, Dr. Rich suggests getting familiarized with them before making the leap. “It’s always upsetting to see pets going back to shelters because they did not fit in or because their adoptive families were unprepared in coping with their behavior or needs,” he mentioned. “I think it’s best for both pets and their adoptive owners’ safety and interests to test the waters and ease their pets in. If fostering is an option, start with that. Make sure that the pets, especially dogs, can fit in well with families and other pets. You want to test those things out in a controlled and safe situation as much as possible.” As with your other pets, making sure your new furry family member has had good medical care before and continuing through the time they’re adopted is equally as important. Getting your newly adopted pets up-to-date with vaccinations, check-ups, and other health needs should be a top priority. Seaside Veterinary Hospital is located at 175 Skylane Road, on St. Simons Island. Visit seasidevets.com for more information about their veterinarians and services or to make an appointment.

Begin on Three

IN MAY 2010, when Roy “Te” Turner picked up the phone to hear his wife

Kathleen, who was out walking on East Beach, exclaim, “I had forgotten how beautiful this place is,” he could read the handwriting on the wall. Kathleen was back on St. Simons Island to do a recital and conduct the choir at Christ Church, Frederica that week. She had been Director of Music there from 1998-2000 until Te took a job in Austin, TX. Ten years later, Te’s job was now virtual, their son Chris had accepted a scholarship offer to swim at the University of Maryland, and Christ Church was searching for a new Organist and Choirmaster. A few months and 1200 miles of moved boxes later, Kathleen was back on the organ bench at Christ Church.

A

s Kathleen celebrates the tenth anniversary of her return to St. Simons, she looks back on a music filled decade. When the Rev. Tom Purdy arrived as Rector in 2013, he stated that he’d like to see the music program of Christ Church be recognized on a regional level. Kathleen helped achieve and exceed that goal. In the year 2018 alone, the Music Program of Christ Church, Frederica received not only regional recognition, but national and international exposure too. Regional recognition came in January 2018 when Kathleen and vocalist Trina Meade were

asked to perform at the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia’s Revival at Honey Creek in celebration of the sanctification of Deaconess Anna Alexander, with Bishop Scott Benhase presiding and Presiding Bishop Michael Curry preaching. Then in July, Kathleen joined two other Episcopal Music Directors to plan and perform all the music for the triennial (79th) National Convention of the Episcopal Church held in Austin, TX. During the convention, Christ Church’s XChoir ensemble was selected to form a key part of the music team which provided the music for eight days of worship services that again featured the Presiding Bishop. Finally, in November, Kathleen and a team of musicians traveled to Havana, (continues)

Cuba on a Musical Pilgrimage, carrying waterpurification systems to the Diocese of Cuba and performing a jazz mass at the Cathedral along with 20 other musicians from six other states and DC. The Pilgrimage was a celebration welcoming the Diocese of Cuba back into communion with The Episcopal Church. “Kathleen’s tenure at Christ Church has spanned a broad swath of time from her first few years on the staff to her return after years of absence. Over that time she has worked to continue to mold and stretch our music ministry to be inclusive of many styles. She excels at bringing diversity to our parish repertoire and making a place for everyone who wants to be involved. From our main adult choir, to our bell choir, to our ensembles, and our children’s choirs, she helps us all praise God through music in amazing ways,” says Fr. Tom. He continues, “I can’t help but acknowledge Kathleen’s ability to help me shape liturgical ministry through music in a collaborative way. If either of us has an idea, she and I can work on it together until it comes together in a way that works, even if the idea we started with transforms into something new. One example is our X Church service, which has a strong focus on ensemble-led contemplative music. It’s our liturgical playground, so to speak, both with the spoken word and the music. Kathleen’s gifts have really shone in that setting. That service, and her gifts, are directly related to the extraordinary opportunity we had to help lead worship at the international level of the Episcopal Church a couple of years ago.”

Christ Church’s XChoir ensemble was selected to form a key part of the music team which provided the music for eight days of worship services at the triennial (79th) National Convention of the Episcopal Church held in Austin, TX. featuring Presiding Bishop Michael Curry.

As exciting as 2018 proved to be, the other years since Kathleen’s return to the island have been full as well. In October 2015, Christ Church hosted a Flower and Music Festival that welcomed hundreds of people to its historic grounds. David Lowe and Chris Triplett, co-owners of Edward on St. Simons and their floral team transformed the church grounds into a stunning display of many colors and textures. Music performed during the Festival was eclectic, from lutes and harps to organs, choirs and timpani. Composing is one of Kathleen’s great loves. A three-month sabbatical, generously pro-

vided by the church in 2017, provided her the opportunity to focus on a number of pieces including her Frederica Setting of the Eucharist. The setting is dedicated to the parish of Christ Church, with special mention of Rev. Purdy. The work, consisting of congregational responses with choir harmonies which occur in an Episcopal Eucharistic Liturgy will be published by Paraclete Press, a music publishing company based in Orleans, MA, and will be released in January 2021. This is an impressive accomplishment, as Paraclete Press publishes music by some of today’s finest composers of sacred choral music, annually reviewing over 1,000 works and releasing between (continues)

40 and 60 works for both choir and organ each year. One of Kathleen’s organ works, Ritornello and Variations on Langlofflan is also set to be released in January. Other compositions which emerged from her sabbatical are Repton (Hymn Tune) for Handbell Choir and Cello; a setting of Ave Maria for the children’s choirs of Christ Church. Kathleen was inspired by a carillon in Italy that played the tune every morning at 8:00 a.m. She also composed Ballad of the Parables, based on the Parables of Jesus with the aim to put them in words children can understand, and a collection of hymn descants. Kathleen shares that an unexpected but truly motivational experience for her in the past decade was performing Ludwig van Beethoven’s Sonata No. 5 for Violin and Piano, the “Spring Sonata” with Maestro Luis Haza on two occasions. First presented in 2013 as a fundraiser for the Golden Isles Youth Orchestra, and then again in 2014 as the inaugural concert for the St. Cecelia Series of Christ Church. Kathleen laughingly notes that in the future she’ll be sure to look at the entire work before accepting such a challenge again. She agreed to perform the piece at Haza’s gentle urging before realizing 38 pages later that Beethoven really knows how to work a pianist. She says, “It’s times like these when an organist really misses her feet!”

Another memorable event occurred just last fall. While hunkering down during Hurricane Dorian Kathleen received a text from Fr. Tom suggesting the church help put on a fundraiser for the Bahamas like had been done for Haiti a couple of years prior. With only a couple weeks of planning in close collaboration with Elegant Island Living, the Island to Island fundraising event with headliners, the Sensational Sounds of Motown and local bands Roy Gentry & Hired Guns and The Island Kings raised over $40,000 in relief for our Bahama Island neighbors impacted by the hurricane. Kathleen’s main focus will always be on parish music ministry. In addition to recruiting singers for the main adult choir, she has put great effort into beefing up other ensembles such as the children’s and youth music programs, the bell choir and organizing and directing the aforementioned XChoir which offers music for the Wednesday evening XChurch service. So what started out as a music program consisting of an Adult Choir, Handbell Choir and only two Sunday morning services with music ten years ago had morphed into a bustling program of five choirs with weekly rehearsals, and four or five weekly liturgies with music. Then wham! Who would have imagined that in March 2020 everything would change?!

With churches not holding live services, technology and virtual performances are now the new normal. Large quantities of rehearsal tracks are recorded each week that culminate in a combination live/video produced online service. Based on her experience recording during this “new normal,” Kathleen does have a recommendation for other musicians: if a large wasp appears on the music rack or nearby, remember that the video records EVERY aspect of one’s reaction, screams and verbal expression included, even if your face isn’t in the frame. It was a good thing Kathleen’s “Worship with Wasp” recording wasn’t during a live event! It’s been an amazing ten year ride and Kathleen is still loving every minute of it. Fr. Tom sums it up well: “Kathleen is a talented and creative musician. She can take an idea and work with it to create a musical experience that deepens the theology of a bible passage or brings laughter to the entire congregation when we’re being silly. Her musical gifts bless this parish and this community over and over again.” Christ Church is lucky to have this upbeat lady who believes in beginning on the downbeat and so is our community. You can watch livestream videos of Christ Church Frederica services and music on their website at ccfssi.org

red McKinnon has been playing piano since he was old enough to climb onto a bench. He says, “I was one of those young boys who survived the teasing about playing piano, and took private lessons from Kindergarten all the way through high school.” Fred attended Georgia Southern University on a music scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor of Music, double-majoring in both Piano Performance and Theory/Composition. In the 1990s, he released a few instrumental albums and then, he says, “Life happened.” Life meaning his lovely wife and four children, full-time church jobs and an e-commerce side hustle. He didn’t have much time to pursue music beyond church services. More recently, however, Fred felt a pull to return to the process of creating piano music. In February 2017, he started a podcast of soothing and peaceful piano works (with no talking) called “Worship Interludes.” He explains, “I wanted to create a soundtrack that people could use during their quiet time, prayer time, and meditation, because our culture is not conducive to give people space to just be still, breathe, and listen. And I knew that instrumental music could transcend language barriers, cultural barriers, reli-

gious barriers, and even physical boundaries.” Fred simply sat at the piano and improvised. “Many times the music that came forth was an interpretation of my own struggles and experiences. I wrote about those and the inspiration behind the episodes on my website.” Then, people started to listen. Fred received an email each day from the podcast provider showing him the number of downloads. He laughs, “I remember being excited when there was more than five downloads, because that meant there were more people subscribing to the show than my parents, wife, and siblings!” The podcast has always been a free resource for people anywhere in the world who can access the Internet. In January, it passed one million views and is being played in hundreds of countries. Fred began adding a soft-spoken greeting to a few episodes of the podcast each month. which “I encourage listeners to let me know where they are and how they use the music.” In response Fred now gets frequent emails, messages on social media and reports from people listening all over the world. He has also added a YouTube channel for access to additional content, and it has more than 1100 subscribers. It’s been an exciting creative journey for Fred. He created a compilation album in 2017 that

included some of his favorite episodes. He also released a new Christmas piano instrumental which charted on Billboard’s New Age chart. ‘That was a really cool accomplishment and I honestly thought it was a hoax when they first contacted me,” he shares. Fred released a new single “Here I Am To Worship,” from an upcoming album that will feature his arrangements of popular praise and worship songs. He’s also working on new compilations of his favorite Worship Interludes and an album of original compositions. “Really,” Fred says. “this story is about the power of the internet. From my little home studio on St. Simons Island, I can create music and distribute it to the entire world with a few clicks. I find that exhilarating and inspiring.” You can learn more about Fred’s music & purchase his releases at FredMcKinnon.com. He’s on YouTube as Fred McKinnon Music and also has artist profiles on Facebook, Instagram, Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora, Amazon Music and more. The Worship Interludes podcast can be found on iTunes and Spotify. Listen and you may find yourself inspired too!

The Brunswick-Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce will be the voice of our local business community, a leader among community partners, and an advocate for the best quality of life. Staffins should also be congratulated for another impressive achievement: the Brunswick Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce earned 5-Star accreditation status with the United States Chamber of Commerce. With approximately 7,000 chambers in the United States, accreditation with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is a prestigious honor that distinguishes the high quality, expertise, and strong leadership displayed by accredited state and local chambers of commerce. Only one percent of chambers

across the nation earn the 5-Star designation each year. It’s also worth noting that it’s rare that a chamber is awarded 5-star accreditation the first time it applies, as was the case here. This is the only national program that recognizes chambers for effective organizational procedures and community involvement and the leadership in our community is already demonstrating it’s one of the best in the nation. Poolside with Peace of Mind: Insuring Your Swimming Pool by C h r i s Te m p l e t o n , M o r r i s & Te m p l e t o n I n s u ra n ce

I

t’s been a long, hot summer, which has meant lots of sunshine and hopefully some pool time. This year, more than ever, we have seen an uptick in the number of families looking to build swimming pools in their backyards to create their own private oases. At Morris & Templeton Insurance, we’re here to help make the process easy and enjoyable for everyone! A very important question that we are frequently asked is, “Does our homeowners insurance policy cover our pool?” Well let’s dive into the details! There are two ways in which your homeowners insurance can protect you if the unexpected happens. First, if your pool is damaged by a covered peril, homeowners insurance is there to help you pay for the repairs. Typically, covered risks will include a fire or falling objects (such as a tree). Keep in mind, however, that your homeowners insurance will only pay for repairs up to the limits stated in your policy. Also note, anything outside of your covered risks will not be covered by your insurance. Secondly, your homeowners insurance policy also includes liability coverage. This would address expenses should a guest get injured at your pool. It would help pay for their medical costs and your

legal protection. As you already know, liability protection is a standard part of your homeowners insurance policy, but having a pool increases your liability risk, so the Insurance Information Institute (III) suggests increasing your coverage to protect yourself from excessive costs should a mishap occur. They suggest purchasing a personal umbrella policy, which provides liability coverage above the limits of your homeowners insurance. A homeowners policy typically provides $100,000 in base liability coverage. When a tragic accident happens, sometimes this isn’t enough. As you would assume, pools can attract uninvited guests. But you may not have known that even if a person is trespassing, they can still sue you if they get hurt while using your pool. It is suggested that if you have a pool, you need the maximum amount of liability protection you can reasonably afford. There are also safety precautions you can take to help prevent injuries by securing your backyard and keeping those who use it safe. Installing a fence is a must. Becoming CPR certified is

strongly suggested. And setting ground rules like “no swimming alone” and “no swimming during a thunderstorm” will also help you avoid accidents. So will your new backyard addition impact your homeowner’s insurance policy? The short answer is “Yes.” A pool will increase your home’s ‘build price,’ or the cost it would take to rebuild everything on your property should a crisis occur. So in

exchange, you will see a rise in your premium with the installation of a pool. The III says it’s important to let your insurer know when you’re planning to build a swimming pool so that you can review your coverage and make sure you have the right amount of protection in place. Ready to make a splash? Call to Morris & Templeton Insurance so you can be poolside with peace of mind.

THE SHOW WILL GO ON … LATER The Island Players assure us the show will go on! While their 2020-21 season has temporarily been put on hold and will not begin in September with Nunsense, as planned, they do still expect to return to the stage in January 2021. The season will begin with Unnecessary Farce by Paul Slade Smith. This show, directed by Lori Willis, features two cops, three crooks, and eight doors in a cheap motel. But who’s who and who’s where and what’s going on isn’t quite clear! What we do know is that there will be lots of laughs! Auditions will be held in October for the show and performances are planned for January, with dates to be announced. For more details, visit theislandplayers.com.

FLEMING HONORED To honor the enduring legacy of former Head of School Ellen Fleming, Frederica Academy has named its long Middle School academic building “Fleming Hall” as a companion to Benefield Hall, the accompanying Middle School building named after co-founders, Tiggie and Dewey Benefield, who were special friends and fervent supporters of Miss Fleming. With the blessing of Miss Fleming’s family, signage was added to Fleming Hall in her memory, and her portrait

and a commemorative plaque will be unveiled at a formal dedication ceremony planned for the next May Day celebration. In addition, the FA Board of Trustees established the Ellen E. Fleming Middle School Memorial Fund. Contributions to the fund are used to make important improvements to the Middle School academic buildings, which will continue to significantly enhance the overall learning and daily life experience for Middle School students and faculty. For more information, contact John Pope at johnpope@fredericaacademy.org.

BAT PRESENTS SILENT SKY Guest Director Jackie Gordon will bring Lauren Gunderson’s stage production Silent Sky to life at the Brunswick Actors’ Theatre in September. The true story of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt explores a woman’s place in society during a time of immense scientific discoveries, when women’s ideas were dismissed until men claimed credit for them. Social progress, like scientific progress, can be hard to see when one is trapped among earthly complications; Henrietta Leavitt and her female peers believe in both, and their dedication changed the way we understand both the heavens and Earth. Performance dates: September 12, 13, 19, 20, 26, 27; showtimes at 8:00 p.m. on Saturdays and 3:00 p.m. on Sundays. For tickets, call 912-280-0023 or purchase online at soglogallery.com.

Links to the Past: Origins of Golf in Brunswick

B

runswick and the Golden Isles have long been known as a mecca for golfers, with local history of the game stretching back over 120 years. Members of the Jekyll Island Club registered with the United States Golf Association in 1894 and opened their first ninehole course in 1898. The next local course was built in Brunswick, south of Gloucester Street in the neighborhood of Windsor Park. In 1888, the newly-formed Brunswick Terminal and Railway Securities Company, financed by New York and Western capitalists and known locally as the Brunswick Company, acquired a large tract between the Marshes of Glynn

and downtown Brunswick. The company had planned to develop Windsor Park as a “picturesque” winter retreat of residences for wealthy Northerners, but the project was delayed by financial setbacks in the 1890s. Around the turn of the century, the company permitted the Brunswick Golf Association, later known as the Brunswick Golf Club, to build a nine-hole golf course within Windsor Park. The links course measured 2,550 yards and had sand greens. It was described in R.L. Polk’s 1914-1915 Brunswick City Guide as “one of the finest in the South” and had “an attractive club house with comfortable appointments.”

The situation changed in the mid1920s when establishment of new industries led to an increase in population and a housing shortage. By 1926, the Brunswick Company had revived its plan to develop Windsor Park as a residential subdivision. They commissioned an official survey from local engineer Fernando J. Torras, who had recently completed the causeway to St. Simons Island, and three model homes were constructed to attract buyers. This caused a dilemma for the Golf Club. As stated in the November 16, 1926 edition of the Brunswick News, “a large number

of lots privately owned … are right in the middle of the golf course, and the erection of homes on one or two of them would so interfere with the course that further playing would be impossible.” Though a syndicate representing the Golf Club owned twenty-six lots in the Park, a portion of the course was held by others who wanted to develop their property. In 1927, the club members abandoned the course and bought property north of the city, where they built the Brunswick Country Club in the early 1930s. The Country Club is still in operation today.

This month’s image from the Coastal Georgia Historical Society archives shows a postcard of the golf links at Windsor Park, circa 1925.
