sponsors 2023 Youth Tour students CARROLL WHITE REMC

Annually, Carroll White REMC sponsors a group of students entering their senior year of high school to experience a life-changing, educational adventure to Washington, D.C., and Gettysburg. This year, Lucas Graham, Cale Maiden and Caleb Weiss, all Twin Lakes High School students, received the honor of being selected to participate in this allexpenses-paid, seven-day trip.

These three young men will represent Carroll White REMC, their community and the entire state of Indiana as they meet with Indiana U.S. Congressional leaders on Capitol Hill and attend a rally with over 1,500 student delegates from across the country.

Since the late 1950s, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and local REMCs have sponsored the Youth Tour. “At Carroll White REMC, we believe students who participate in the Youth Tour learn more about the political process as they interact with elected officials,” said Casey Crabb, REMC’s communications and public relations manager.

“This is a great honor and a trip that will stay with students for the rest of their lives,” Crabb said. “It’s a fantastic way to see historic sites, meet new friends and make connections that will help them down the road. I have a passion for our country’s history, and I have no doubt these three students will enjoy this unique opportunity!”

Since its inception, the Youth Tour has hosted nearly 50,000 students from rural areas and small towns across this great nation. Some Youth Tour alumni have gone on to lead companies, design aircraft and even serve in the highest ranks of government, including the U.S. Senate. Who knows what impact this tour will have on the three representatives for Carroll White REMC!

Lucas Graham

The son of Nathan and Emily Graham, Lucas lives in rural Monticello. He is a member of the Twin Lakes High School swim team and was named the most improved swimmer in the 2022 season. Lucas participated in cross country and track, earning the track “Mental Attitude” award in 2022. He also participates in poultry with the White County 4-H program.

“When visiting Washington, D.C., I’m excited to experience the sites and history of our National Capital,” said Lucas. “I also look forward to meeting other students from around the state while making new friends over the summer.

“I briefly visited D.C. once to visit my aunt and uncle and their family. I believe it’s important for people to travel and experience new places. Being around different people who think differently or have different beliefs can help one to be more openminded toward others.

“As I prepare to enter my senior year of high school, the experience of this trip will allow me to network and meet new people who share common interests,” Lucas said.
