MINUTES OF THE 8TH ANNUAL MEETING OF THE MEMBERS Carroll White Rural Electric Membership Corporation Monday, June 17, 2019 Twin Lakes High School 300 S. Third St. Monticello, Indiana The Annual Meeting of the members of the Carroll White Rural Electric Membership Corporation was held at the Twin Lakes High School in Monticello, Indiana, on Monday evening, June 17, 2019 at 7:00 P.M., pursuant to notice mailed to all members of the Cooperative more than ten days prior to the 17th day of June 2019.

Kevin M. Bender, President, presided at the business meeting, and Ralph H. Zarse, Secretary, acted as secretary of the meeting and kept the minutes thereof.

Following the singing of the StarSpangled Banner by Butch Kramer, the invocation was given by Phil Messer.

President Bender welcomed the members to the meeting and introduced special guests seated in the audience and the board of directors.

At the request of the President, Secretary Zarse then read the Certificate Specifying Number of Members and the Proof of Giving Notice attached hereto and made a part hereof the minutes of this meeting.

Upon proper motion duly made, seconded and carried, the reading of the minutes from the Carroll White REMC Annual Meeting of the members held June 12, 2018 was dispensed.

President Bender introduced Attorney Patrick Manahan, partner in the law firm of Emerson & Manahan to conduct the election of directors for two board districts. Attorney Manahan then gave

the candidates, nominated at meetings held in each of their respective districts, a few minutes to speak to the members via pre-recorded videos. Attorney Manahan then asked Secretary Zarse if there was a quorum and he replied that a quorum was present. A motion was made to elect the two unopposed directors: Kevin M. Bender; District 2, and Margaret E. Foutch; District 4. The motion was seconded and approved by the members.

Attorney Manahan then asked Directors Bender and Foutch to step to the podium where he administered the Oath of Office in front of the members.

President Bender, with no further business, thanked the members for coming and asked for a motion to adjourn.

A motion was made, seconded and approved by the members. The meeting was adjourned at 7:21 P.M. After adjournment of the business meeting, President Bender presented representatives Darlene Mellon and Karen Albrecht of the Uptown Project in Francesville with a $5,000.00 donation

There’s no place like home Self-isolation and quarantining — which are now part of everyone’s lexicon — have changed our habits, our lives, our physical health and our mental health. Here are some of my random thoughts about staying put at home after a long career of “going to work.”

• Not having to set the alarm clock is so liberating! It does make a difference when your body actually gets the sleep it needs, without an inanimate object forcing you to wake up.

• It’s amazing how creative you can get when you base your meals on what you have in your pantry, refrigerator and freezer. Canned tuna, cream cheese and baby carrots CAN become a delicious dinner … somehow.

• Sweatpants and slippers ARE pretty darn comfortable. I never thought they would be day-to-day wear for me though.

• I can now tell time based on what’s on daytime TV! (Does anyone else know when Kelly Clarkson o’clock is?)

• Drinking green tea daily can help prevent heart attacks and stroke. Good news for my work-at-home self! Steaming hot green tea has been my go-to springtime beverage. Drinking it is like enjoying a warm hug — which is especially welcome in scary times.

Pre-pandemic, most of my waking hours were spent away from home: in the car, at work, running errands.

Getting reacquainted to being home, cozy and safe with my cat keeping watch next to my laptop, was something nice to come out of an awful situation.

Golden Memories A tribute to 50 years serving REMC members The year was 1970. New homes cost an average of $23,450. The average annual income was $9,400. Gasoline cost 36 cents a gallon. Sports Illustrated could be purchased for 15 cents and a postage stamp cost 6 cents. The largest rock festival ever attracted 600,000 people who heard Jimi Hendrix and The Who perform.

The voting age in the United States was lowered to 18.

In 1970, Myrna Clay graduated from Twin Lakes High School.

She was the first Twin Lakes High School co-op student. She was assigned to the White County REMC office. “The first semester of my senior year at REMC, I shredded paper, did a little typing and cleaned files,” Clay recalled. “I did not mind the work, but I felt I was missing out at school in the classes I needed.”

Second semester of school rolled around and White County REMC asked Clay to return to work. “I told them I did not think that I would,” Clay said. “Mrs. McClintic, the co-op coordinator, convinced me that it would be a mistake not to go back. She said that perhaps I may have a permanent job there

in the future. I took her advice and she was right.” During the second semester, Clay was named junior billing clerk.

Following graduation, Myrna Clay Clay was hired full time and thus began her 50 years of serving REMC members.

“I began as the junior billing clerk, then was senior billing clerk for some time,” Clay said. In 1972, she was named member records clerk, a position she held until 1981 when she became accounts receivable clerk. In 2002, she became a billing clerk and in 2007, Clay joined the member service representatives, a position she maintained until her retirement.

Clay was born in the home where she grew up at 411 Turpie St. in Monticello. “According to our realtor, our home is the oldest in Monticello still standing,” Clay said. “Built by Gen. Turpie in 1856, the house had a stone wall foundation and double-bricked walls. It also stands on the highest ground in Monticello. It is a big

Clay was the fourth of five children.

“My parents had a large garden covering three lots with everything in it, including fruit trees,” Clay said.

“We grew and sold strawberries every summer.”

Growing up in Monticello provided many summer opportunities. “I loved to swim at Ideal Beach, later Indiana Beach,” Clay remembered. “For a small fee, the school provided buses and teachers in the summer to teach swimming. I loved roller skating at the beach, where the bumper cars later were placed.

“I rode my bike all over town and only had to be home in time for dinner,” Clay said.

In her 50-year career, Clay experienced vast changes. Clearly, technology impacted the way business was approached. “We used to do all the bills in our office and then we moved to having them printed and mailed outside,” Clay said. “We went from using an address-a-graph machine to make meter reading books for each member to read their own meters.

Then we contracted meter readers and moved on to automated meter readings.

“The tornado in 1974 and the ice storm of 1991 were difficult times,” Clay recalled. “The REMC members were always eager to help in any way possible. They always understood difficult times.”

Clay is looking forward to retirement.

“I plan to work with my son, Mark, and enjoy some free time,” she said.

known as “The Drummer”), plan to visit Calgary, Canada, where her mother lived as a child for seven years. They are hoping to make that trip with her two sisters, Linda and Susan, and their spouses.

She and James have been married for 48 years. They have four children.

Neal, who is retired, was formerly an engineer at Kimberly Clark. He and his wife, Sandy, have two sons: Jay and Blake (Blair). They live in Georgia.

Daughter Debra is an occupational therapist. She and her husband, David Baker from Michigan, have two children: Alex and Bernie (Liz) of Lafayette.

The Clays’ son, Mark, who lives in Monticello is a machinist for medical bone rasps and works for Jordan Manufacturing. He has four children: Brooke, Bret, Brianna and Brittney, and stepchildren Nikko and Rey. Son Aaron is an occupational therapist assistant from Monticello. He has two children: Kadence and Asher.

Clay also has seven stepgrandchildren and eight step-greatgrandchildren.

It was not business as usual. The Carroll White REMC Operation Round Up board trustees were not sitting around a table talking about the second quarter grant cycle. The trustees did, however, meet at their appointed time and date … from their homes.

Zoom video conferencing was the format for this online meeting, a new experience for many of us during this time.

In the second quarter of 2020, the Operation Round Up board of trustees granted $11,353.94 to 13 grant recipients. The total amount of funds granted in 2020 is $28,253.94. Operation Round Up has never been more appreciated by non-profits. Many of these organizations have lost funds because of canceled fundraisers during the pandemic.

The challenges for non-profits won’t end when the quarantine is lifted.

The largest award in this grant cycle was given to Carroll County Senior and Family Services. Located in Delphi, this organization was awarded $1,628.94 to help provide meals and a friendly atmosphere for seniors.

Other grant recipients included: Carroll County Community Center received $1,500 to assist with its Summer Day Camp program. This program runs for nine weeks and provides transportation, childcare and activities for Carroll County youth during the summer break. Located in Flora, the Community Center sponsors weekly field trips to other communities in Carroll County. The funds will assist with transportation costs.

Therapeion Therapeutic Riding Center was awarded a $1,500 grant to provide equine-assisted programs for those with cognitive, developmental, physical, behavioral and emotional disabilities.

Founded in 2007, Therapeion Therapeutic Riding Center is located outside of Brookston. This organization annually helps over 100 individual participants with disabilities. Each rider works with one to three volunteers.

New Hope School Inc. received $1,000 to help replace two 10-year-old computers in the high school room. The Rossville-based school was formed

Flora United Methodist Church Preschool received a $1,000 grant to help purchase new instruments. This preschool has been in business for 20 years in Flora. Music and the arts are an important component of its curriculum.

White County Council on Aging received $1,000 to be used for a flooring project in the facility’s main meeting room. The current flooring is 22 years old.

In addition to seniors using the Council on Aging, other local groups meet there.

White County Veterans Affairs uses the main meeting room as does the Salvation Army, Weight Watchers, and local sororities. Support groups also use this facility.

North White Music Department received $1,000 to purchase new

Freedom Mission, Inc. received $825 to purchase a portable partition. Created in 2002, Freedom Mission assists Carroll County residents in times of need. The organization has a building in downtown Delphi called the Freedom Center. The partition will allow Lifeline facilitators to conduct two small group sessions at the same time by dividing a large room in half.

Burrows Liberty Township Fire Department received a $750 grant to replace a 22-year-old thermal imaging camera. The current model is obsolete and parts are not available. Thermal imaging cameras are important to help search for victims in a fire or to find hotspots inside a wall where the fire may be hiding.

Delphi Community High School, Student Publications was awarded $550 to assist in publishing The Parnassus, the student newspaper at Delphi Community High School. The Operation Round Up funds will go toward a new camera.

Carroll County High School, North White High School and Twin Lakes High School’s After Prom Committees each received $200.

Sharing Success grants will help area non-profits CoBank’s Sharing Success program has approved Carroll White REMC’s application to receive matching funds to assist three area not-for-profit organizations.

With Carroll White REMC’s money and a match from CoBank, the following organizations will receive total contributions of $20,000: • The Monticello Riverwalk will receive $9,000.

• The Burlington Community Building will receive $5,000.

• $6,000 is earmarked for Food Finders, which will be divided between food pantries in Carroll, White and Pulaski counties.

The Monticello Redevelopment Commission is heading up the Riverwalk Project, a major development along the Tippecanoe River in downtown Monticello. This development will be a huge economic driver for White County and the surrounding counties. The city hopes to capitalize on the existing waterways.

“The lakes are our greatest asset, but there is no way to get to the water in downtown Monticello,” said Dan Oldenkamp, member of the Monticello Redevelopment Commission and

chairman of the Riverwalk Project.

“We hope to connect Carroll County, White County and the entire city to the lake. I think in 10 years we will look back and say this is the best decision we have made.

“Phase One of the Riverwalk will be the White County Historic Society Plaza,” Oldenkamp said. “The plaza will be where the trails along the river will begin. We hope businesses will see this as an opportunity to invest in the community.”

“The Riverwalk will enhance what tourism, entertainment and opportunities we have,” said Kaylee Hahn, White County digital marketing director. “We see this as a first step in creating an exciting new vision for the community.”

The Burlington Community Building, also called the Memorial Park Building, was built in 1974 and doubled in size in 1992 thanks to private donations.

The Community Building is part of Burlington Park, which is located on 30 acres on Highway 22 in southeastern

Carroll County. Many renovations are planned to improve the Community Building, as it is a gathering hub for area residents. The building is utilized for both public and private events.

The Food Finders donation is being equally divided between the White County Food Pantry, Pulaski County Human Services, and Carroll County Food Pantry which serves Delphi and Flora. With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for assistance at local food pantries has increased.

CoBank’s Sharing Success program was established in 2012. CoBank and its customers have together contributed more than $44 million to non-profit organizations.

“CW REMC is a proud participant in the CoBank Sharing Success charitable contribution program,” said Carroll White REMC CEO Randy W. Price.

“We believe this program is another great way for us to give back to the communities we serve.”

From the boardroom The Carroll White REMC board of directors met on April 23 via a Webex/phone conference call due to the coronavirus. Roll call was taken and minutes of the previous board meeting were reviewed and approved. The board then discussed the recent district nomination meetings held virtually through Zoom and shared thoughts about the upcoming Annual Meeting and the state of the coronavirus pandemic. It was determined that the Annual Meeting

would be conducted virtually on June 22 and to begin making the proper arrangements for our members.

Chief Operating Officer Cathy Raderstorf presented the Wabash Valley Power Alliance tracker adjustment for April 2020. After discussion, the board voted to approve to pass through the power tracker adjustment which results in a decrease for members. The new tracker for the general service rate is ($0.000109).

The board reviewed the financial report from Raderstorf and new memberships were approved. The board then heard reports from Indiana Electric Cooperatives, Wabash Valley Power Alliance, as well as management reports before adjourning.

Community solar offers more people a chance to participate in renewable energy A beaming summer sun is increasingly cooling people’s homes, washing their clothes, and even freezing their ice cubes.

When many people think about solar energy, they picture solar panels installed on home rooftops.

Fortunately, new opportunities to invest in renewable energy have emerged for those in participating communities.

In community solar programs, a central organization installs, owns, and maintains solar arrays, which are large groups of solar panels that are joined together to produce electricity.

Participants in a community solar program then purchase a portion of the electricity generated by the arrays, which are directly connected to the energy grid. The solar energy then flows into the grid and joins all of the electricity produced to power homes, farms, schools, and businesses.

Community solar programs allow businesses, renters, and a variety of people and organizations who cannot put panels on their property the ability to participate in solar energy.

Homeowners who have a lot of shade on their property or who cannot afford the upfront cost of panels also now have another option. Community solar participants are supporting the development of renewable energy resources. By doing so, they are helping reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.

Carbon dioxide sensor can lower energy use, reduce utility costs Most people are familiar with the motion sensors that detect activity and then turn on the lights.

Purdue University researchers are turning to similar technologies to help manage climate control and indoor air quality.

“Climate control and proper ventilation are especially important because most people spend considerably more time indoors than outside,” said Jeff Rhoads, a professor of mechanical engineering in Purdue’s College of Engineering. “Climate control and ventilation are also huge sources of energy consumption in the United States and around the world.”

Kosciusko County When settlers began filling in the new state of Indiana in the first half of the 1800s, they proudly adopted names relating to their heritage.

One county’s Polish ancestry stands out in its name — Kosciusko — and its seat — Warsaw.

The northern Indiana county, founded in 1836, is named after the Polish general and military architect Tadeusz Kościuszko who served in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. The county seat is named after the capital of Poland.

By mid-century, with its location amid the county’s plentiful natural glacial lakes, Warsaw and the county had become an early tourism destination. The lakes, along with the railroads, brought more residents — and industry.

The lakes and one industry in particular — medical devices — have given Warsaw and Kosciusko County much of its character and economic prosperity since the late 19th century.

The many lakes bring bustling activities to Warsaw, North Webster, Winona Lake and Syracuse, and provide endless opportunities for water recreation. Indiana’s oldest sternwheeler, The Dixie, cruises Webster Lake in the summer, and Lake Wawasee hosts an annual fireworks display during the Fourth of July weekend.

At 3,060 acres, Lake Wawasee is the largest natural body of water wholly within Indiana. It is a summer vacation area for residents from Indianapolis and Chicago.

In 1895, Revra DePuy, a 35-yearold chemist and pharmaceutical salesman, had grown so fond of the area’s lakes during his work-related travels, he decided to make Warsaw home of his new manufacturing plant. DePuy Manufacturing began designing and building fiber splints that could be customized for patients to set fractures, an advance over the wooden splints used at the time. DePuy became the world’s first manufacturer of orthopedic devices.

Thirty-two years later, DePuy employee and area native J.O. Zimmer launched his own company.

Today, Warsaw’s orthopedic device cluster is one of the country’s most concentrated centers of medical device makers. These companies, which include industry giants like DePuy Synthes and Zimmer Biomet, represent 50% of the global orthopedic market for total joint replacements. Truly, Warsaw is “the Orthopedic Capital of the World.”

Stir to combine. Pour in the soda and stir to combine. Add ice as desired.

Garnish with lime slices and serve.

Reserve ½ cup syrup. Set cherries aside. In a medium saucepan, combine reserved syrup, sugar and cornstarch. Cook and stir until thick. Stir in cherries. In a small saucepan, heat brandy until it simmers. Carefully ignite brandy and pour over cherry mixture. Serve immediately over ice cream.

As we ease out of quarantine, the pent-up desire to go shopping means bargain hunters are ready to scour neighborhood garage sales. Now is the perfect time to rehome your old items and make a little cash while you’re at it! We’ve got some useful tips for making your garage sale a well-organized and well-attended event.

ORGANIZE YOUR STUFF When you’re sifting through all your stuff, sometimes it’s difficult to decide what to keep and what to sell.

You’ve probably heard this rule of thumb before, and it just makes sense: if you haven’t used the item for at least one year (or even forgot it existed), then it’s probably time to let it go. Start setting those items aside in a “sale” pile or storage bin. In fact, this is a good time to invest in extra storage bins just so you can streamline and organize the stuff in your “keep” pile.

PUT THE WORD OUT Marketing your sale ahead of time is just as important as getting rid of stuff. If you live in a neighborhood with a homeowners association that holds designated garage sale weekends, join in and take advantage of the added car and foot traffic. Whether you’re with a group sale or not, it’s a good idea to specifically advertise your own sale as well.

You can easily place a newspaper or social media ad for little or no money. But don’t skimp on advertising your sale at the street corners and country roads leading to your location.

• Pick up some premade sale signs or supplies to make your own, such as bright and sturdy poster boards, paint or markers, and nails or a staple gun.

• Place those stick-in-the-ground type signs or sandwich boards along the road or street (with the permission of those property owners).

Folding tables are a smart investment because they make it easy for shoppers to look at all your wares, and they’ll come in handy later for lots of other uses.

Otherwise, large pieces of plywood laid over sawhorses or crates will work.

Showcase clothing items on a wheeled clothing rack that’s easy to assemble, move around, and pack up after the sale. Decorative bins and organizers are not only useful for corralling small loose items during your sale, but after your sale as well.

Simple stickers and markers are a must for pricing your items, and some stickers even come pre-printed. A big roll of masking tape will also do the trick. Masking or painter’s tape is great for keeping sets of items together like towels and sheets.

This is a garage sale, after all, not a high-end boutique, but it wouldn’t hurt to get some of your bigger ticket items cleaned up. Some dusting rags, cleaner, and a little elbow grease can only help your sales.

product recalls Hair dryers pose electrocution hazard This recall involves LUS handheld hair dryers sold in white, in a box that also contains a diffuser. The hair dryers have the model number HD-LUS01 printed under the back end of the hair dryer. The logos “LUS Brands” and “Love Ur Curls” are located on either side of the back end of the dryer.

The hair dryers do not have an immersion protection device, posing an electrocution or shock hazard if the dryer falls into water when plugged in.

The hair dryers were sold online from November 2019 through February 2020 for between $125 and $144.

Epson recalls power adapters sold with scanners Epson has recalled the power adapter plug for some digital scanners because the adapter can overheat, melt and catch fire, posing burn and fire hazards.

The recalled adapter was sold with Epson V-series scanners (V30/V33/V37/V300/V330/V370) at Best Buy, Office Depot, Staples, Walmart, and department stores nationwide from January 2010 through December 2015 for between $55 and $80 for the scanner and adapter. “EADP-16CB B” is printed on the label of the adaptor.

Epson is aware of 15 incidents worldwide of the adapter melting or catching fire, resulting in property damage. No injuries have been reported.

Trimmers and polesaws recalled This recall involves Troy-Bilt, Craftsman-branded trimmers and Remington-branded polesaws powered by a 25cc 2-Cycle gasoline engine. The trimmer’s housing is red and black and Troy-Bilt or Craftsman is printed on the top of the unit. The polesaw’s housing is orange and black and Remington is printed on the top of the unit.

Trimmers and polesaws have serial numbers 1K199DG1886 through 1L059DH1017. The model and serial number is located on the white model label on the engine cover.

The models were sold at Ace Hardware, Menards, True Value, Do It Best, Fred Meyer, and other stores nationwide from November 2019 through January 2020 for between $109 and $190.

What kind of education do you have?

I have a master’s degree in GIS and also attend specialized training to stay up-to-date on new technologies and software.

I learned most of my electrical knowledge on the job from our field teams and by spending time in the field myself.

What’s a typical day like?

Most days include communicating with other co-op employees and consumers, and dispatching outages as they come in. I’ll also post work orders and other changes to our GIS maps to keep them accurate. The lineworkers are constantly building new lines, adding new services and replacing equipment. But a storm can change my day in an instant!

What part of your job do you find to be most fulfilling?

I take pride in having accurate and up-to-date GIS maps to help our field teams, especially when

they can quickly see outages and can get power restored as soon as possible.

How do you describe working for a co-op?

I have an entire new family. I’ve made many friendships and have been able to network with my peers at other co-ops throughout the state and country. It’s like a big family that you can call on to help and provide advice whenever we might need it.

Do you see opportunity for growth in this position?

I’ve already been able to advance! I started as a part-time GIS technician and have been able to grow into the position of a supervisor. The co-op encourages continuous learning and gives us the time and resources to do it.

DIRECTOR CANDIDATES

KENT ZIMPFER, DISTRICT 3 The Carroll White REMC board of directors appointed Kent Zimpfer to represent District 3 in 2016. He replaced retiring director Jim Jeffries.

“When the opportunity arose to interview for the CW REMC board, I was excited to be able to represent my district and become part of an incredible cooperative team,” Zimpfer said. “What interested me most about running for the board was being able to represent our community and help navigate the cooperative through future challenges.”

Zimpfer has completed over 150 hours of educational courses with topics covering future green energy needs, boardroom rules and procedures, and policies and bylaws.

Zimpfer owns and operates Z Construction Company which specializes in energy-efficient custom homes, re-models and commercial projects.

A Carroll County native, he graduated from Delphi Community High School in 1994. In high school, Zimpfer was a four-year, foursport varsity athlete. He attended Ball State University, where he majored in business management. He played football there for two years. Zimpfer later attended Purdue University, taking supervision and construction management classes.

Zimpfer and his wife, Kasey, have been married for 20 years. She is the vice president of human resources for North American manufacturing at Braun Corporation. They have two children: Kane, a senior at Delphi High School, and Ryn, a student at Delphi Middle School.

RALPH ZARSE, DISTRICT 5 Ralph Zarse was elected to serve on the White County REMC board of directors in March 2007. “When Dale Dahlenburg, the director in my district for several years, decided to retire from the board, I made a decision to run for the board,” Zarse said.

“I like to do things that involve tough decision-making,” he said. “I thought the board would satisfy that and be interesting as well.”

Zarse enjoys learning from the other directors, staff and members. “The board always has the best interest of the members in their entire decision-making process,” he said.

A 1963 graduate of Reynolds High School, Zarse’s class was the last to graduate from that school, prior to consolidation. While in high school, Zarse ran cross country and played basketball.

The love of running has followed Zarse on his life journey. “Running marathons (26.2 miles) inspires me because I like to stay fit and mentally tough to take on all challenges concerning health and other challenges that arise,” reflected Zarse.

Following his high school graduation, Zarse began farming in Honey Creek Township with his brother, Carl. They continue that venture today. “Being a farmer helps me in the boardroom,” Zarse said. “Farming involves tough decisions, large expenditures, constant change and the need to improve the bottom line.”

Zarse and his wife, Bonnie Lou, have two daughters: Christa Zarse and Kathleen (Brad) Perry. Both girls live in Ohio.

TINA DAVIS, DISTRICT 7 In 2017, Tina Davis was elected to fill the District 7 seat vacated by Gerald Kruger.

Prior to putting her name on the ballot and securing the seat, Davis had long-term ties with REMC. “I’ve had a vested interest in our cooperative since my husband, Randy, and I have been long-time members,” said Davis.

For 16 years, Davis worked as a contract meter reader for REMC. She served on the Operation Round Up® board for six years with the last year of service helping merge the Carroll and White Round Up boards. “I have also been privileged to serve on many REMC nominating committees.”

“Knowing I serve with other board members who are incredible people who love their families, community and country is what I enjoy most about the board,” Davis said. “We all have the best interest of the cooperative first and foremost in every decision made.”

Davis met her husband while bicycling around the country. They have been married over 41 years and owned the Country Acres Store in Francesville. Davis is a parttime church secretary, taking care of the church food pantry distribution. She also teaches an aquacise class at West Central.

Davis loves music and singing. She teaches youth at church and enjoys going on mission trips. Other hobbies include reading, hiking, spending time with friends and doing needlework/handiwork.

The Davises have two sons. Son Ross and his wife, Caty, have three children and live nearby. Son Grant lives in Colorado.
