SPREADING cheer THROUGHOUT THE year

It’s the holiday season! While children may think about seeing Santa and waking up on Christmas morning to stacks of presents, many adults may think about the holiday in a different light. When I think of Christmastime, I think of giving back to the community and spending time with loved ones. Sometimes it may be volunteering my time, or donating to a local charity.

Not only do I strive to give back to the community that has given me so much, but so does the team at WIN Energy REMC. One of our seven cooperative principles by which we operate is “Concern for Community.” Over the past year, our cooperative has given back to the community many different ways. With the help of you, our member, we have been fortunate enough to give back to local charitable organizations through our Operation Round Up program. The program rounds up your electric bill to the next whole dollar to benefit and support a variety of community organizations. This year alone, members have helped us grant over $55,000 to over 20 local organizations. Incredible!

In June, our team completed a bike building project where we not only had the opportunity to bond with other coworkers, but give back as well. WIN Energy REMC was able to donate a total of 10 bicycles to local foster children through the Isaiah 1:17 Project DreamCycles program.

In July, several members of our team volunteered their evenings to work at county fairs in our service territory. At the fairs, we took admission money, parked fairgoers, and handed out free sunglasses! While it may have only been a few hours of our time, we hope that being out in our service territory put a smile on at least one person’s face.

Several times throughout the year, we enjoy having the opportunity to visit our local youth. This year, we have had several opportunities to teach students about safety. Local students learned about electrical safety through the Vigo County 5th Grade Conservation/ Environmental Field Day, school visits, and Knox County Ag Day. This fall, a group of 10 high school students in the Knox County CEO (Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities) program even had the chance to tour our Vincennes facility to learn about the career opportunities at electric cooperatives.

One of the most recent ways we gave back to our community was participating in Indiana’s Electric Cooperative Community Day in October. Our employees spent the day volunteering at Camp Arthur cleaning the dining hall, painting the outside of buildings, cleaning and organizing the boat house, and tree trimming.

Whether it’s the holiday season or the middle of the summer, WIN Energy REMC loves to “spread cheer” by giving back to the community. This holiday season, I hope Santa is good to you, and I encourage you to find a way to give back to our community, too! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

COMMUNITY DAY

On Friday, Oct. 14, the team at WIN Energy REMC participated in Indiana's Electric Cooperative Community Day. Each year, electric cooperatives across the state spend a day volunteering with an organization in their service territory. This year, our team volunteered at Camp Arthur. Camp Arthur is located off Highway 41 in northern Knox County. The camp was established in 1947 as a Boy Scout Camp and is now a camp open for schools, churches and the like to rent.

Projects included deep cleaning the dining hall, painting the outside of buildings, cleaning and organizing the boat house, and tree trimming.

HEATS Graduation

Congratulations to the WIN Energy REMC graduates of the MSR (Member Service Representatives) and Lineman HEATS (Hoosier Energy Apprentice Training and Safety) programs! The programs require classroom instruction and on-the-job training. Lineman do not only graduate from the HEATS program, but receive an applied science associate degree from Ivy Tech and a certificate from the US Department of Labor.

The MSR program takes 2.5 years to complete, while the lineman program is a 4-year commitment. Graduates celebrated with a dinner and awards ceremony in French Lick. Congratulations, graduates!
