In a presentation titled “Failure Modes, Troubleshooting & Maintenance Best Practices,” Earp and Widup plan to offer recommendations for performing field tests safely and efficiently, drawing on their extensive experience in field work. Their session appears likely to concentrate on technology, standards, and safe work practices.

Earp and Widup are scheduled to follow up this session with a second one, titled “Use the Latest Tools of the Trade for Field Testing of Electric Motors,” in which they will do as the title suggests: explain the latest trends, techniques, and technology used to field test and assess electric motors.

As they do each year, EASA’s technical support staff will be making sizable contributions to the convention program. In addition to the presentations by Tom Bishop and Chuck Yung described above, there will be contributions by EASA pump and vibration specialist Gene Vogel and EASA technical support specialist Matthew Conville.

Vogel is a familiar figure at EASA conventions, usually presenting multiple sessions and readily available to engage one-on-one with attendees. This year he’s scheduled to give three consecutive sessions totaling four hours in length, with half-hour breaks in between. But those who hope to attend these sessions had better plan ahead; Vogel is scheduled to appear on Saturday, June 26, when many attendees will be arriving and getting themselves situated at their hotels.

Matthew Conville, a recent addition to the EASA technical staff, plans to share his expertise with carbon brushes in a session titled “Carbon Brush Applications, Tips & Tricks.” Conville — who was our generous host during EA’s visit to Flanders in Evansville, Ind., for our August 2018 cover article — will outline the numerous considerations behind the use of these machine components that are often taken for granted.

Covering the fundamentals No EASA convention would be complete without at least a couple of sessions on broader subjects of interest to those new to the field or looking to brush up their skills, and this year’s convention appears unlikely to be any exception.

The first technical session of the convention, scheduled for 1:00 until 4:30 Saturday afternoon, will be an overview of synchronous motor operation and application presented by Javier Portos of Integrated Power Services LLC. In it, Portos will cover basic theory and operation, troubleshooting in the field, and repair.

Another session on service fundamentals will be held two days later, when Wayne Hall of Jenkins Electric is scheduled to offer generator repair tips. In addition to explaining what to take note of during a generator repair, Hall will also cover elementary troubleshooting.

The sessions described here are just a sampling of what’s in store for those who choose to make the trek to Fort Worth for this year’s convention. There will also be the usual assortment of side trips and networking events, presentations about the economy — particularly the electromechanical sector — and talks by motivational speakers meant to uplift and inspire. Welcome to Fort Worth What to see during this year’s roundup of the Electrical Apparatus Service Association

By Susan L. Follett, EA Contributing Writer Your bags are packed, your mask and hand sanitizer are in your carry-on, and you’re looking forward to getting back to the annual EASA Convention. But all work and no play — we all know how that ends. And Fort Worth has some great attractions to explore. So here are a few things to ponder as you plan your trip.

First, a little history. Fort Worth, the nation’s 13th largest city, is named for Brig. Gen. William J. Worth, an Army officer who distinguished himself during the War of 1812, the Second Seminole War, and the Mexican-American War. The city was established in 1849 as an Army outpost and grew to prominence as a livestock center with the arrival of railroads in the late 1870s. The Fort Worth Stockyards are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and cattle drives are still held there twice a day.

EASA has planned a number of events in and around the Stockyards; be sure to check the convention website if you’re interested in taking part. Conference planners have also put together events in other nearby locations, including day trips to nearby Waco and Dallas and a tour of the Fort Worth Botanic Garden. Additionally, Brandon and Clark, an electric motor service and repair facility that opened in 1950, will be hosting this year’s service center tour.

“We really liked the feel of Fort Worth,” said Dale Shuter, meetings and exposition manager for EASA, explaining the association’s choice of venue for this year’s event. “Even though it’s a big city, it has a

small city feel. We’re the only group at the convention center and the three main hotels, so you’ll see lots of people wearing EASA nametags as you’re out exploring. We’re happy to be holding the event in person this year, and we’re looking forward to welcoming everyone.”

Shuter recommends the Waco tour for those who are getting to Fort Worth early in the weekend, as well as the tour that takes place before the closing party at the Stockyards on June 29. And don’t miss the opening night networking event on June 27 at the arena adjacent to the convention center, she added. “It’s a great way to see old friends again before you head out to explore Fort Worth.”

Cultural District: Located a few miles from downtown, the Cultural District includes five museums — the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Kimbell Art Museum, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, and National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame — in a single park-like setting, as well as the Will Rogers Memorial Center, the Botanic Garden, movie theaters, restaurants, shops, and bars.

Sundance Square: Located on the north side of downtown Fort Worth, this 35-block area — named for the partner of outlaw Butch Cassidy, who often traveled to this part of town — includes galleries, restaurants, and the Fort Worth Water Gardens.

Camp Bowie District: Renamed after a nearby World War I military training camp, Camp Bowie Blvd. has evolved into the city’s premier commerce corridor, with retail, restaurant, and entertainment options as well as preserved historic sites, including Roy Pope Grocery, Kincaid’s, The Original, and the Blue Bonnet Bakery.

Panther Island: Located north of downtown Fort Worth, Panther Island is home to the only waterfront stage in Texas, as well as Panther Island Brewing, the Coyote Drive-In Movie Theater, Panther Island Pavilion Beach, and Panther Island Ice, Fort Worth’s only outdoor ice-skating rink.

Botanical Research Institute of Texas: Founded in 1987, BRIT is an international scientific research and learning center focused on conservation and knowledge-sharing. Vintage Flying Museum: Located in Meacham International Airport, this museum is home to nearly two dozen rare and historic aircraft, a dedicated reciprocal and jet engine room and WWII memorabilia and artifacts.

At a convention of the Electrical Apparatus Service Association that promises to be unlike any of the ones before, exhibitors are pulling out all the stops to make a good impression with friends and customers — all in a safe environment

This year’s convention of the Electrical Apparatus Service Association, being held June 27-29 at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth, Tex., will truly be unlike any previous iteration of the convention we’ve ever seen. After a year of doing things virtually, attendees and exhibitors alike will be happier than ever to see one another again, as reports from exhibitors on the following pages attest. But they’ll have to do so in a measured manner.

To get a sense of what the convention’s going to look like, we spoke to EASA’s President & CEO Linda Raynes and Meetings & Expositions Manager Dale Shuter about social distancing precautions, specific rules, and other measures being taken in EASA’s Covid-19 protocol plan to make the layout, exchanges, and excitement that the conventions are famous for completely safe. Here are our questions and EASA’s answers: EA: How are you handling social distancing?

EASA: This has been posted on our website and sent out by e-mail. We also plan to include it in the registration bags. There will also be signage at the event.

Onsite at EASA 2021 Convention & Solutions Expo, attendees will be required to: > Use EASA’s badge distance indicators regarding attendee greetings. > Wear masks that cover the nose and mouth in the lobby/hallway areas (per convention center rules) and Solutions Expo unless your small group agrees to badge distance indicators. > Maintain social distance (six feet) from others in the hallway unless your small group agrees to badge distance indicators. > Follow one-way traffic signs in common areas and hallways. > Utilize sanitation stations located throughout the meeting space and expo hall. > Perform self-assessed health screenings. > Do not attend if experiencing any symptoms. > A touchless check-in includes scan-and-go badge printing and QR code. There will be marked social distancing at check-in, with a plexiglass partition at the registration desk.

EA: Many have voiced concern about how sessions will be safely monitored as well.

EASA: Sessions will have socially distanced seating and separate microphones for all speakers. Initially, masks were required for all individuals during sessions. With the updated Center for Disease Control & Prevention guidelines announced April 27, however, masks will not

be required for fully vaccinated individuals once seated during sessions.

Convention staff will be sanitizing session rooms during breaks. For food and beverage safety, table seating will be limited to six people per round-top table. Grab-and-go options will be available at the expo, combined with gloved servers, single-serve condiments, and no pre-placed items on tables.

EA: It sounds like a bit of a downer, but I imagine the no handshakes/hugs is going to be incredibly difficult to enforce.

EASA: At the expo, expect to maintain six feet of personal space. Oneway traffic flow in the expo aisles and signage with following expo rules: Masks required, flow traffic indicators, and no handshakes/hugs unless both parties indicated they allow contact via the badge system. Name badges will be required for entry. Sanitization stations will be scattered throughout the hall. Rest stops will be available for side meetings between attendees and/or exhibitors. Socially distanced eating and standing areas will also be provided.

Another adjustment for showgoers, but a crucial one for keeping things sanitary: limited giveaways that require exchanging hands or multiple points of contact. Finally, there will be a one-way entrance and exit door format, paired with wider aisles that allow two-way traffic in center and sides, in order to keep the aforementioned flow traffic indicators effective.

EA: Badge system specifics: How will it work? Anything you think EA readers need to know that will make preparation easier for them? How will you enforce the no handshakes and/or hugs rules?

EASA: We will actually be using a Dot system (see illustration). These too will be included in the registration bag with an explanation of what each one means.

We will also have signage for this. All attendees will be provided colored “dis-

tance dots.” By placing one of these dots on your name badge, you are telling others your distance preferences (and you’ll quickly understand theirs, too!)

Red = “No contact.” Keep six feet away from me, no exceptions.

Yellow = This “elbows only” level indicates “I’m still being cautious.” You still want to keep some distance with these individuals unless they’ve given you permission for an “elbow bump” greeting.

Green = The “Hi-Fives & Handshakes” tier. These attendees are okay with a handshake or even a hug if you know each other. Requires frequent hand sanitizing and washing.

EA: What are some of the extracurricular activities this year that you’re most

looking forward to (i.e. Billy Bob’s)?

EASA: Sunday at the Arena will be a really fun, casual networking event immediately after the Solutions Expo from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. (The Arena is right next to our expo hall.) EASA will provide two drink tickets to each attendee, and there will be fun sports-themed food and games. We hope everyone will join us for a while before heading out for the evening.

The closing party on Tuesday at Billy Bob’s will be a great night, too; how could it not be at the world’s largest honky-tonk? There will even be line dancing lessons. Another highlight will be the service center tour to Brandon & Clark on Tuesday afternoon. And we Please turn to next page

EA: Any other aspects of the convention you’re excited about?

EASA: We are very excited about the Saturday “Supercharge Your Sales Leadership” workshop presented by sales guru Mike Weinberg, one of our most highly rated speakers. Mike is blunt and practical, and we’re confident this all-day seminar will be enormously beneficial to member sales leaders – whether they’re the owner of a small firm or a sales manager of a larger member. This is an incredible value at only $199 for members and $699 for non-members (a fraction of its typical price). We are also releasing new industry research at the general session on Monday; consider it “must see” information.

EA: If you could describe the general feeling you have in a few sentences: What’s it feel like approaching this year’s show, knowing you’ll be back to the show floor after a year “off,” when you were forced to do it virtually?

EASA: We are thrilled to be back in person. People are ready to get back to business, and there is nothing like meeting with fellow members and our great expo partners face-to-face. We know we can provide a safe meeting environment that still allows attendees to network, do business, get needed education, and have some fun while doing it.

EA: Thank you for your thorough explanation of convention protocol. And now, let’s meet some of this year’s exhibitors . . .

Motor shaft grounding rings explained According to Electro Static Technology, maker of the AEGIS line of motor shaft grounding rings, VFD-induced shaft voltages discharge through motor bearings and can destroy the bearings in as little as three months. Motor repair shops are often blamed if this problem recurs after a motor has been repaired, according to the company, and motor manufacturers also suffer blame since motor users often don’t understand the connection between VFDs and electrical bearing damage, believing it to be the result of mechanical wear rather than electrical discharge machining. AEGIS rings are designed to protect bearings — and ultimately motors — from these discharges. Preformed Windings, founded half a century ago in a Sheffield, U.K., garage, now has a global presence as a leading manufacturer of high-voltage and armature coils. The company works with international OEMs and independent repair facilities in the hydro, nuclear, and oil and gas industries, where reliable, long-lasting machines are critical. Chairman Marcus Moir cites R&D investment, thought leadership, U.S. prospects, and the strength of the company’s brand as components of a “winning combination” that inspired Highgate Capital to acquire Preformed Windings last year.

The company is recognized for its high-quality diamond coils, which are designed with low partial discharge in mind. PD, the electrical discharge occurring between two conducting electrodes without completely bridging the gap, can significantly lessen asset life due to the energy caused by such discharges, deteriorating insulation. Reducing PD levels in windings can lower maintenance costs and enhance long-term reliability.

High-quality materials, handled with care, are crucial manufacturing considerations, and careful attention to every stage of the process is key to a quality outcome. Martyn Widdowson, technical manager, cites as an example the intricacies of working with insulation tape: Because it is applied under tension, all conductors must be parallel. to avoid introducing voids between the conductors and the insulation; and control of back tension of the copper, lay of the conductors, and application of turn tape are all critical. “We want to control the overlap of the insulation very carefully and avoid introducing voids,” he says.

Another key part of high-quality resin-rich coil manufacture is the final pressing stage where the insulation and resin are pressed into a homogenous mass using the very careful application of pressure and heat. Carrying out this final press stage in a factory environment allows for extremely tight tolerances and exceptionally low PD results to be achieved. Production manager Les Guthrie emphasizes that achieving the lowest PD levels requires multiple trials of the pressing process, to ensure consistent, correct resin temperature throughout the coil, achieving the correct viscosity and control of excess resin flow.

High-quality insulation that is carefully applied, shaped, and pressed will be void- and ripple-free, making it less susceptible to de-lamination and reduced life. According to managing director Danny Fox, “carefully manufactured low PD coils can not only survive the rigors of the thermal cycle and voltage endurance testing, but also then pass all standard electrical tests while still returning results mirroring a brand-new coil.”

Observing an evident appetite in the HV repair market for low PD coils, James Stevens, global sales and marketing director, points out that Preformed Windings is well positioned and willing to help end users. “We have successfully developed low PD coils that have been extensively tested both internally and independently, exceeding industry standard tests such as thermal cycle and voltage endurance many times. A ‘lively bunch’ of commutator experts

High Voltage, Inc., plans to spotlight its line of HVI a-c dielectric test sets at this year’s EASA Convention. Offering what it calls “a hipot for every application,” the company designs and manufactures many a-c dielectric test sets to serve a number of applications for high-voltage a-c testing of electrical apparatus and cable. The products can perform a-c withstand, tan delta/power factor, and partial discharge testing.

Introducing a new, versatile brazing system Forging ahead after losing a founder The year 2020 was difficult for everyone, but it was especially challenging for Smarter Systems of Chandler, Ariz., which lost one of its founders at the beginning of the year. William “Bill” Carter, a longtime member of EASA, died Jan. 28, 2020.

In the early 1980s, Mr. Carter and his daughter, Jody Yniguez, using one of the first IBM personal computers, designed and began developing the Smarter Systems job costing accounting package expressly for the electrical apparatus repair industry.

“Starting out 2020 by losing our dad was devastating for our family, as so many family-owned motor shops have experienced and can relate,” Jody tells us. “Not only missing his advice and Bill Carter expertise in the business, but just his huge presence put a big hole in our lives. Going forward felt like moving in slow motion.”

As more than a year has passed and the difficulties of 2020 have receded, Jody is focused on adding new features to the Smarter Systems program and expanding the company’s customer base. The EASA convention is one place where she hopes to do this. She writes: “I look forward to adding new capabilities to the system while still keeping it the most affordable job costing system available. For the past several years we have partnered with a software firm in Melbourne, Australia, and have continued to expand the accounting side of the system to allow for flexibility and adaptability to more countries.

“The system includes screens for Spanish and capability to edit screens for other languages or label requirements. There are also three different currency settings available. We have added an asset module to track assets and keep maintenance schedules for equipment, etc. We have also focused on screens designed to store all of the necessary inspection and job information required by the EASA accreditation standards. We really have packed in a lot of features in this affordable program and plan to continue into the future with renewed vision.”

H2O Weld plans to showcase its new Oweld brazing systems, which can cover many more applications than before and in many cases can replace the use of gas, according to the company. New locations can use H2O Weld generators instead of expensive gas systems. Besides welding, the Oweld brazing systems can be used for removing bearings, cleaning large slots, soldering commutators, stripping copper wire, and other applications. The systems are said to be environmentally friendly, with neutral flame and zero CO2 emissions. The systems work with distilled water and electricity, and safety features include no explosion hazards, no gas storage, and no unhealthy fumes.

The flame doesn’t affect the magnetic properties of the motor’s core, and the systems are good for removing bearing cleaning slots “with perfect results,” according to the company.

Far from idle during the pandemic Siemens Industry, Inc., informs us that “this past year has been very challenging for all of us” as the pandemic forced the company to get creative with finding new ways to reach out to customers. “Normally, our local teams travel all over, make site visits, and give lunch break technical sessions with many different audiences,” writes marketing manager Matthew Conkrite. “This last year, we’ve been posting more on social media, ran several technical webinars, and got to know customers in new ways.”

The company also introduced a new motor line and designed and built a new 3D application to help inform users about the inner workings of large induction motors, particularly how vibration and thermodynamics come into play. “We’re excited to bring both to show everyone at EASA this year,” says Conkrite.

As a software developer, 2020 was not as bad for Spring Point Solutions as it was for a lot of companies. The hardest part, the company tells us, was that so many events were canceled. The EASA Convention and regional meetings are where representatives of the company connect with old friends, meet new ones, conceptualize partnerships, and stay tuned in to the industry.

Last year, PEI significantly expanded its operations with the acquisition of Fibertek’s electrical products division. The acquisition expanded PEI’s existing in-house manufacturing of banding tapes, banding films, edging tapes, armor tapes, and b-stage surge rope lines. There they plan to demonstrate maintenance-free, no-adjustment motor brakes and clutch brakes and show how these products often outlast the motors they’re paired with. If you’ve had to replace a motor because the brake that was stopping it failed, ruining them both, then an oil shear clutch brake may be the answer, they say.

Noting that a “green” recovery is underway and that the federal government is launching stimulus plans with incentives for energy savings, Lafert says it will be showcasing its highperformance Ultra Premium Efficient line of permanent magnet motors. Together again The mood was energetic as members of the Electrical Apparatus Service Association gathered in-person for the first time in two years

FORT WORTH, TEX. — More than 1,500 attendees found themselves wandering the Fort Worth Convention Center in late June for the annual Electrical Apparatus Service Association convention, specifically taking place June 27-29. A smaller crowd than usual, but one with remarkable quality, according to many exhibitors and attendees.

The Texas edition of the annual expo and educational event has been a curiosity for many across the electromechanical sphere; last year’s conference (like many others) was moved online due to the much-talked-about pandemic, and many trade shows, regardless of supporting industries, have yet to resume in-person gatherings.

We tried our best to answer any anticipated questions in our promotional coverage of the event, such as mask requirements and other updated accommodations. While notable exhibitors had dropped out, and many companies continued to restrict employee travel amid ongoing health and safety concerns, the show floor buzzed with the energy of good business, friendship, and Texas spirit just as the doors opened to attendees.

Open management forum Several EASA education sessions tackled the ever-present concern of good management and employee support, but none was more freeform than Sunday’s Open Management Forum, facilitated by EASA’s Management Services Committee and hosted by K&N Electric president Janet Schmidlkofer (who is also featured in this month’s article “Help Wanted,” page 35). and satisfaction is a common challenge for shop owners, but no two businesses will have the same exact issues.

To address the broad-scoping nature of management concerns, the session allowed EASA-goers the opportunity to stand up at a microphone and pick the committee’s brains regarding whatever management questions they’ve been pondering over the past year (or longer), including the creation and consideration of apprenticeship programs, training techniques (including virtual reality technologies and their uses), incentives that go beyond yearly raises, and facilitating worker happiness.

Connecting generations One common issue for electrical shop management is how to lead a diverse team; one common factor of diversity is age, especially as more businesses seek to find, hire, and train younger folk to make up for a retiring generation. Clint Swindell, host of the “Tell Me Somethin’ Good” positivity podcast, sought to explain some of these generational issues and provided some advice.

Firstly, he broke up the generations into loose categories: “Mature,” “Boomers,” Gen X,” “Millennials,” and “Post-Millennials.” You may recognize the final category by its other name, “Gen Z.” The categorization is important, because each generation has its own unique quirks and understandings of the world, all as a result of the unique situations each has experienced. Your Vietnam veterans are going to have a different concept of work than your fresh-faced farm boys, and expecting them to conform to one another’s vision isn’t likely to end well for anyone.

“Emerging” technology is no longer emerging, according to Jerry Peerbolte of J. Peerbolte & Associates. What we’ve been calling emerging technology — remote condition monitoring, the Internet of Things, Big Data, the Cloud — is already here. The next step in the evolution of service will be contracts that guarantee performance outcomes.

That was the primary takeaway this year of what has become an annual event: A review of the results of the annual EASA industry survey, in which EASA members — along with select customers and vendors — are polled and interviewed on matters pertaining to the sale and servicing of rotating electrical equipment.

The purpose of the project is to strengthen the service center’s business model, benchmark “best practices,” examine the relationships between members and customers and between members and suppliers, and to spot global trends so members can act accordingly.

EASA launched its industry research in 2003, and since then the subjects the survey addresses have shifted. In 2015, EASA’s new accreditation program was part of the mix, sources of channel conflict were discussed, and there was talk of warranty service.

For the 2021 report, remote condition monitoring and the lasting effects of the Covid-19 pandemic were prominent.

A phrase the authors of this year’s report came up with was, “Once you’ve seen one EASAn . . . you’ve seen one.” It’s recognition that each company has its own unique strengths. The authors also recognized “the wind at your back” (factors acting in your favor) as well as “the wind in your face” (challenges you must deal with).

The wind at your back, Peerbolte said, includes the typical shop owner’s status as a “trusted advisor” on all matters electromechanical as well as the company’s unique strengths. The wind in your face, he said, consists of several factors: The rising horsepower threshold below which customers choose to replace rather than repair motors, the sale of replacement motors shifting to other channels, buying behavior that’s been changed by the pandemic, and the “commoditization” of replacement motors

— what Peerbolte called “the C-word.”

In conversations with manufacturers and vendors, Peerbolte heard several warnings that he said shop owners need to be aware of: Social media and digital marketing are gaining in importance. “Any sort of e-marketing,” whether it be social media, blogs, e-catalogs, or websites, is providing avenues for your customers to find your competitors, Peerbolte said. Manufacturers asked Peerbolte, “Do you realize that end users are going to these platforms more and more for their buying decisions?”

There’s too much reliance on a small number of key customers. The typical service center relies on one or two customers, which makes the service center vulnerable to factors beyond its control. The risk of this can be offset by becoming the customers’ “trusted advisor,” who is less expendable than a mere supplier.

Strategic market planning is being neglected. “Who are your target accounts?” Peerbolte asked. “What are you doing to capture that business?

The concern is that you’re not doing that, and it’s kind of hard to know where you’re going with your business.”

Uncertainty about a service company’s succession plans. This isn’t just a problem for people within a company. If customers don’t know if there’s a succession plan, they can become nervous, which makes them receptive to a competitor’s sales pitch.

Often, Peerbolte said, decision-makers at service centers weren’t well informed about new technology. “Many of the conversations about emerging technologies required me to talk to someone other than my first contact,” he said.

Some service companies are stuck in a business model that’s quickly becoming outdated, Peerbolte warned.

You have the service center with a range of services and product sales.

You’ve done it for many years. Most of the repair-replace decisions occur between you and the local customer, Peerbolte said. It’s all occurring at that local level. “How might that change?” he asked. “What will it mean to you,

your customers, and your vendors?”

Peerbolte said it’s instructive to look at the evolution of maintenance philosophies, which have gone through several phases: reactive maintenance, preventive maintenance, condition-based maintenance, predictive maintenance, and prescriptive maintenance.

a subscription-based model currently offered by bearing manufacturer SKF under which the customer pays a fee to ensure clearly defined performance levels of their rotating machines are met.

The SKF plan is called Rotation for Life, and “it’s not all about the bearings; it’s about the rotating equipment those bearings are used in,” Peerbolte said. SKF’s promise: “We’re going to provide some performance outcome.”

Owners and managers of EASA-type service companies would do well to consider offering performance-outcome agreements, Peerbolte said. Two years ago, when service company customers were asked if they’d be interested in such a plan, 44% said they’d like to learn more.

economic conditions and a forecast of what we can expect over the next several years. On the whole he was optimistic, although he anticipates another recession in 2026.

“The economy is going to rise through 2022, but at a slower pace,” Beaulieu predicted. It will continue rising through 2024, he said, “so you’ve got three and a half years of economic rise, in our reckoning.”

During the pandemic, “our government, world governments, moved mountains to stimulate the economy,” he said, “but they stimulated the economy as if the economy was broken,” which it wasn’t.

Today we’re experiencing supply chain problems because demand has ramped up so fast that the supply can’t keep up. Beaulieu expects the supply chain problems will improve in 2022 and by 2023 should be fully resolved.

This is good news “if you have enough energy, enough people,” Beaulieu said. “The challenges you’re going to be faced with will require you to be really, really good at what you do.”

Anyone who’s thinking of retiring soon should consider doing so by the end of tation covered billing, task delegation, time and material quoting, using spreadsheets and flow charts, and dealing with motors outside the EASA database.

Yung pointed out that many plant managers hold off billing until monthend, thereby giving those customers interest-free loans for at least a couple of weeks. For a $100,000 tab, this means a loss of over $600 in just two weeks. Better to bill each job upon its completion, Yung said.

He cited Excel spreadsheets as one way to schedule complex jobs. Another tip: When customer information is incomplete, quote on a specific assumption while stating that if the assumption proves incorrect, “quoted price will be adjusted accordingly.”

Much of Yung’s presentation dealt with employee hiring and training. His advice: “Contrary to popular opinion, we do not want every employee to move up in the ranks. There are repetitive tasks that seem mundane, and for those tasks we want people who are content where they are. The hierarchy of any business resembles a pyramid – the farther up you go, the fewer people at each subsequent level.” — RLN

Beaulieu said. He believes that interest rates will begin rising in the second half of 2022. Initial interest rate increases are unlikely to be greater than a quarter of a percentage point and won’t have much detrimental effect on the economy. It’s the larger interest rate hikes that come later that we’ll need to watch out for. “‘26 looks to us to be a bad year,” Beaulieu said, because of the larger interest rate increases he’s anticipating.

“Inflation fires have been lit, but there’s no accelerant on the flame,” Beaulieu said. “What you fear is going to happen, but not right away.”
