Pawlogie OBSESSED WITH PETS

Protect Your Pet’s Joint Tissues for a Better Quality of Life Tri-Acta is your pet’s first line of defence against the many joint and muscle discomforts associated with the ageing process. It is also an excellent choice for pet owners wishing to take a proactive approach to preserving optimal joint health in younger pets.

Healthy Development

Tri-Acta can be used proactively as a daily dietary supplement for growing pets. The active ingredients in Tri-Acta are proven to have a positive impact on cartilage development and inhibit degenerative conditions, even before they arise.

Alleviate Discomfort

Protect Joint Tissues

The hyaluronic acid contained in Tri-Acta is known to improve the quality of synovial fluid, thereby offering a cushioned, lubricating effect to your pet’s joints. This is just one of the many ways Tri-Acta protects your pet’s joint tissues from the destructive aging process.

Joint and muscle discomfort is one of the most common complaints made by pet owners, especially in cases of degenerative disease or following orthopaedic surgery. Tri-Acta decreases the stiffness and chronic pain associated with these conditions, offering your pet a more comfortable quality of life.

Improve Mobility

Slow the Aging Signs

Complete Nutrition

Senior pets are faced with countless daily discomforts, most of which are part of the natural aging process. With the help of Tri-Acta, however, your pet can remain active and comfortable for longer, with fewer trips to the vet.

integricare_animalhealth

Decreased mobility can significantly affect the relationship you have with your pet and diminish his or her overall quality of life. Tri-Acta is proven to restore diminished mobility and reduce inflammation, allowing your pet to remain active and involved in your daily routine.

Tri-Acta contains only the highest quality ingredients, and it provides the essential nutrients that may be missing from your pet’s regular diet. Tri-Acta is a smart and beneficial choice for active pets at any stage of life.

PET PORTRAITS “A WORK OF ARF

A Shaggy Dog Story in Not So Many Words, 24" x 24", Zann Hemphill (experimental oil)

Throughout history, humans have commissioned great artists to paint portraits of their beloved animal companions. Noble hunting dogs, feline companions, and equine mounts have long been the subject of portraiture for centuries. While the 10

tradition of individual humans posing for intricate classical portraits has since fallen out of favour, pet portraits are now more accessible than ever. Pet portraits often involve the owner sending a reference photograph to an artist who

recreates the photo in their own unique artstyle. These portraits are a wonderful way to commemorate a pet that has passed or to feature a stunning original piece of artwork in your home. Following are profiles of Canadian pet portraiture artists:

Cool Holiday Zann’s St. Bernard mix puppy, Peaches.

Zann Hemphill is the Emily Carr graduate and expert painter behind Paws by Zann, creating custom pet portraits in stunning realism. Zann began creating pet portraits with pencil crayon and charcoal at the age of 13. In 2012, she switched to oil paints and never looked back. She paints out of her home studio in Lantzville on Vancouver Island, shipping her work across Canada, the US, and occasionally to the UK. Zann works closely with pet owners to bring photographs of their animals to life by capturing mood, lighting, and emotion with delicate love. Her oil paintings highlight each individual pet’s personality and unique expressions through keen detail, from mischievous glinting eyes to cheery dangling tongues. In her own words, “I’ve seen the impact pets have on their people, and I believe caring for an animal is one of the best things any human can do for their own wellbeing. My goal is to capture a moment of that happy friendship on canvas.”

You can view Zann’s experimental dog artwork in person at the Van Dop Gallery. Check out painting demos, examples, and other goodies from Zann here.

Portraits by Jeni Mckay

Jeni Mckay is a Vancouver artist specializing in acrylic on canvas inspired by both animals and the natural landscapes of British Columbia. She utilizes the emotions of animals to create fun and often surreal portraits, from cats in hats, to dogs in Hawaiian shirts, to roosters in space. Her work captures animals in realistic detail depicted with a unique narrative flair. For instance, a 12

pup seated outside a brewery with an ale, sporting a stylish jacket and scarf. Jeni seeks to convey the emotional bonds between people and their pets, illustrating the similarities between us and our beloved animals. She also raises money for the SPCA annually by doing paintings by donation. Follow Jeni on Facebook and Instagram, purchase her prints on Society6.

Alannah Leach is an Ontario artist who can't believe it's already been over a decade of drawing pets for clients! Her work can be found on Alannimals.

“It still means so to me that

people entrust me with keeping their pets memories alive through pencil and now sporting them on their clothing. I absolutely love being around animals and learning about their quirks or general lifestyles. If you ever need someone to talk about your pets with then just send me a message. Can't wait to see your photos and learn about your pets!

@tundra_theheeler

Please remember to always go prepared, pack the 10 essentials for yourself, and keep your dog’s needs in mind. I always carry a winter or rain jacket for my dog (depending on how cold it is), paw balm, dog booties, and lots of treats. Recommendations: We use Hurtta rain or winter jackets, Hurtta dog booties, and Musher’s Secret paw wax. For treats, we bring snacks by brands such as Strait To Summit, Jay’s Tasty Adventures, or Treat Planet.

WINTER TIME BLUES? NOT AROUND HERE! Jericca Battagliola and Tundra enjoy the winter wonderlands. If you have a snow loving dog, winter time around British Columbia is lots of fun up in the mountains! Thankfully if your dog isn’t a fan of the snow, the Lower Mainland doesn’t get much

snow in the city! My dog, Tundra, loves the snow; she rolls around in it and gets the zoomies instantly! If your dog enjoys snow, we highly recommend you go snowshoeing.

20

If snow isn’t your thing, you can go explore your local trails in the city, dress warmly, and go explore your favourite pet friendly stores! If you are walking around the city with your dog, I also suggest you use a paw balm and wipe your dog’s paws after being out, as lots of shops and retail stores use salt, which can cause irritation to your dog paws. Recommendations: We use Earth Rated pet wipes. Stay safe out there and enjoy the winter wonderlands!

re our the er e f a s t Stay he win t y o j n and e ! rlands wonde ! Cheers Tundra & a c c i Jer

SOME OF OUR FAVOURITE PLACES TO GO SNOWSHOEING WITH TUNDRA Callaghan Valley – Whistler, BC: This is such a good spot to bring Fido; they are allowed off leash! This is a paid groomed trail and you have to pay a pet fee as well. However, the money from the pet fee goes towards an animal rescue, which makes it easy to justify. There are many different trails to go explore, including a trail to a frozen waterfall. Such a beautiful site! They also have cross country skiing here, which the dogs are welcome to join in on. • Rentals are available on site.

Sasquatch Mountain Resort – Mission, BC: These are also dog-friendly, paid groomed trails to go explore. There are a few different routes you can take and explore. The dogs love roaming around in the snow! • Rentals are available on site.

Manning Park - Manning, BC: Manning Park has several different trails. We usually just explore the free trails at Lighting Lakes, but there are groomed trails that you can pay for. If you’re really advanced, you can hike or snowshoe up to Poland Lake or to one of the higher elevation trails for free. Please note some parts of the groomed trails are meant for cross country skiers and you need to ensure you and your dog are not in their way or on their path. • Rentals are available on site.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Things to consider before bringing a pet home It’s the holiday season, and that means one thing for certain: gift giving. While it may seem like a fantastic idea to finally surprise that person in your life with the pet they’ve always wanted, any pet requires huge amounts of research, preparation, and consideration. 24

The last thing anyone wants is to have to give up a new pet due to lack of preparedness shortly after welcoming them into your home. We’ve put together some questions and tips to help you make informed decisions about your soon-to-be best friend. Research is the name of the

game when it comes to buying or adopting a new pet. Most pet owners-to-be know they prefer cats over dogs or vice-versa, but each individual breed comes with their own specific challenges and special concerns. Allergens, shedding, life-span, energy-levels, potential health

issues, and daily time commitment are just a few categories of research to look into before you set your heart on a particular pet. Small pets, too, (even goldfish!) require a thorough amount of research before purchase. This could mean knowing appropriate tank or cage sizes, nutritional needs, bedding, lamp setups, and so on. Through your research, it’s important to consider your current lifestyle and whether or not your chosen pet would be a good fit for your household. Do you have the means to take care of a rambunctious puppy? Will your job situation permit you to spend adequate time with your new parrot? Do you have time to take an energetic dog for long walks each day? Does your chosen breed tend to get along with children? If the pet will be your child’s, are you as the parent willing to pick up the slack in caretaking if they lose interest in the pet? It’s unfortunate, but it happens! Questions like these

are important to consider before making any commitments. Pets tend not to be the most gracious roommates. Sometimes, a lack of adequate attention can cause an animal to become destructive. Other times, accidents happen! Your pet will likely be curious about everything they can get their paws on. That’s why it’s important to pet-proof your home by moving any delicate objects out of reach and making peace with the fact that accidents can (and will) happen. But fret not! Objects are just objects, and there’s always good ol’ Lysol. If re-carpeting is the least of your worries, then be sure to consider the inevitable vet bills that may come your way. Even the most cautious pet owners find non-routine visits to the vet unavoidable at times. A solid plan of action before acquiring your furry friend is to save some emergency funds for such occasions. Pet insurance can also be a great solution. If there’s one thing to take

away, remember that pets are friends, not toys that you can stow away once the novelty wears off. All animals require a great deal of commitment. This is a living, breathing creature under your care and it’s up to you to take care of them to the best of your abilities. Once you’ve done all your homework, rolled up that antique rug, and set some money aside, you’re ready to take a new friend home! In the spirit of the holiday season, we’ve collected a list of animal shelters across Canada as a starting point to check out:

PB&CHI IS A NON-PROFIT DOG RESCUE who’s mission is to save dogs that are at risk of euthanasia in overcrowded shelters and from other situations of neglect. We have them

fully vetted (spayed/neutered, vaccinated, any health concerns and surgeries taken care of), provide training as needed and find them their forever homes in British Columbia.

We provide ongoing support to our dogs and adopters for life. PB&Chi is a registered Canadian charity, run by group of volunteers and relies solely on donations.

TEAMWORK MAKES DREAMWORK

ISLAND PET SOURCE locally owned in Langford, BC

 Caring  Honest  Knowledgeable  Ethical  Responsible  In-Store Experience  Pet Grooming  Dog Walking

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED The store was opened in 2009 by the previous owner, Tim Kellington, who I began working for in 2012. I really enjoyed working with pet parents and learning all that I could about pet health and nutrition. When the opportunity came in 2014 for me to purchase the store, I was thrilled to do so. Since then, my daughter and I have been running the store together and are excited for the future of Island Pet Source. 30

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT OWNING A PET STORE I love engaging with other passionate pet owners like myself and being a part of their pets lives. Some of our customers have been shopping here since we opened and it’s great to see their pet(s) develop and grow. I also love being a part of the community and seeing the exponential growth happening around us.

BIGGEST CHALLENGES (IF ANY)? There are so many moving parts and aspects to running a small business that it can be overwhelming at times. I have a fantastic team of staff, which makes things easier, but the days can be long and tiring depending on whether I have worked as the dog walker or sales associate that day. The COVID-19 pandemic has also brought its own set of challenges that we have

had to manage, but we have remained open throughout and I am grateful for that. DO YOU HAVE ANY PETS AND WHAT ARE THEIR NAMES? Between my daughter and I, we have a full house! Our pets are: Pete (Poodle X), Doodle (Chinese Crested X), Larry (Greyhound), Puck (Schnauzer X), Eddy (Boxer X) and Tuk (Shihtzu X).

WHAT MAKES YOUR STORE DIFFERENT FROM A TYPICAL PET STORE? We are proud to be one of the few independent pet specialty retailers in our area and we try to offer products that are unique and harder to find at other stores. We also offer a full-service grooming shop and recently started a dog walking service which has been an exciting new venture!

WHAT AWARDS HAVE YOU WON? 2019 Top 3 finalist in the Best of the Westshore community awards for the category of “Best Business” EVERYTHING YOU GUYS DO FOR THE COMMUNITY We have always believed in community involvement as a key part of our business model. Over the years we have hosted many fundraising events for various local pet rescue organizations. We’ve held clothing drives for local organizations that support homeless youth and adults in the community. We support the local sports teams, and donate raffle prizes to elementary schools for their events.

Here’s #socialdistancing in pet store terms! Turns out that 2 giant bully sticks is 6ft! Let’s all keep doing our part and keep our distance to stay safe! 31
