In the Spring of 2020, I studied abroad in Urbino, Italy. The Coronavirus pandemic hit during this semester, and we completed our semester remotely for the last two-thirds of it. My studio project was to create a memorial for victims of the Coronavirus pandemic.
To do this, I created a memorial placement for each victim’s name to be recognized, with a light as representation of the soul. This idea is reminicient of a columbarium, which is a room or building with niches for funeral urns to be stored.

Alamo Mercado and Condos was intended to accompany the new Alamo master plan in revamping downtown San Antonio by recapturing the historic footprint of the Alamo and creating a new world class visitor center and museum to bring future generations the historic structures of the complex.
To accompany this tremendous revitilization of the area, we were assigned the program of condos and a mercado, or market, to invite in visitors to the Alamo and envelope them in the culture of San Antonio.

This project is a public multi-use recreation center on the riverwalk. The form for this building was created by extruding the site, carving out balcony space on the west side, and punching an atrium through the middle. I drew inspiration from my precedent studies to use the atrium as a thermal chimney to promote passive cooling and ventilation. The materials used are limestone blocks from the previously exsisting riverwalk wall, concrete, glass, and steel. The structure is 25’ bays with steel columns and beams and concrete floor plates.

Systems Diagram

1.Photovaultaic cells are attached to the curtain walls on the north and south face to generate power for the building and shield the operable window openings.

2.Water is collected on vertical and horizontal exterior faces using gutters running along each floor, which brings collected water down to tanks in the ground. Annually, about 288,000 gallons of water can be collected.
3.Gardening is done both traditionally and with a hydroponic greenhouse. The produce from both methods of gardening is to be used in the riverwalk restaurant and distributed to other business in the case of excess. With the hydroponic greenhouse, about 48,000 lbs of crops can be produced annually.

4.The atrium going through the middle of the building works as a thermal chimney. Using operable windows on the exterior of the building as well as in the atrium, air is ventilated through the building and hot air rises, ventilating and cooling the building.

5.Along the railings of each of the balcony areas are small scale windmills, meant to produce energy for the building. These are constructed from metal and shielded from the public with a net.

Redwood apartments were the first projects I worked on while employed at Mann Parsons Gray Architects. While working on these apartments, I experienced putting together a set of construction documents, residential architecture and its unique rules, and the ins and outs of wood construction. I also visited several construction sites and worked on apartments in several different states.

VIO Med Spa projects were a venture into commercial architecture, and interior revitilization. With VIO Med Spa projects, I learned about ANSI requirements, Different building code requirements for many different states (these projects were located in several different states), ADA requirements, and drawings needed when retrofitting an interior space. I gained expereince with different types of drawings, such as demolition plans, interior elevations, and reflected ceiling plans, which will be present in this section. I created CD sets for these primarily on my own.
