Editorial Hola lectores, Me alegra ver que hemos sobrevivido otro verano y que entrando en septiembre podemos comenzar a recuperar nuestras playas, nuestros aparcamientos, y nuestros bares y restaurantes tras un número récord de visitantes. Aunque las fiestas y celebraciones aún no han terminado, ya que aún tenemos la Fiesta de la Vendimia de Manilva y la Feria del Cristo en Casares este mes, las cosas poco a poco vuelven a la normalidad, y los padres cuentan los días en que sus pequeños retoños volverán al cole y las empresas recuperan a todo su personal que ya no está de vacaciones.

Ahora que el verano ha terminado, quizá los políticos decidan formar gobierno. Han pasado siete meses desde que acudimos a las urnas por primera vez y a pesar de que se celebraron unas segundas elecciones, no estamos más cerca de un acuerdo de coalición y si esto no se consigue en breve, parece que tendremos que ir a las urnas por tercera vez…¡el día de Navidad!

Como sabéis, no me gusta hablar de mi mismo, pero para mi los próximos meses van a ser muy ajetreados. Aquí en The Resident trabajamos duro para mejorar el periódico y contamos con varias iniciativas para lograr este objetivo, especialmente con nuestra presencia en Internet, así que permanece atento que pronto daremos más información. No olvides que si deseas colaborar con The Resident, siempre buscamos colaboradores para este periódico comunitario. Hablando de estar atentos, estoy encantado de formar parte del nuevo Castle Radio y de nuevo presentaré mi programa Indie Andaluz, un vistazo semanal a la escena musical. Finalmente, ahora como Vicepresidente de la Duquesa Charitable Society of St. George, estoy encantado de anunciar que nuestras tiendas están funcionando muy bien gracias sobre todo al gran equipo de voluntarios que tenemos, y aparte de nuestros proyectos y donaciones regulares, pronto anunciaremos más apoyo para nuestra comunidad local.

Hello readers, well I’m glad to see that we’ve all survived another summer, and as we enter September we can begin to reclaim our beaches, our parking slots and our bars and restaurants after a record number of visitors. Whilst the festivities are not yet quite over, we still have the Manilva Grape (Wine) Festival and Casares also celebrates its Feria del Cristo this month, things are beginning to return to normal, with parents counting down the days until their little darlings return to school, and businesses getting back to full levels of staff.

Now that the summer is over maybe the politicians will get around to forming a government, it has been over seven months since Spain first went to the polls, and despite a second general election we are no nearer an agreement for a coalition with a sufficient number of seats to effectively govern the country, and if that is not achieved very shortly it is looking increasingly likely that the country will have to go to the polls for a third time on Christmas Day! As you know I’m not normally one to talk about myself, but for me the coming months are going to be very busy. Here at The Resident we are working hard to improve the paper and we have a number of initiatives to achieve that aim, especially with our online presence, so stay tuned for more information in that direction. Don’t forget if you’d like to get involved with The Resident we are always looking for contributors to this community newspaper.

Talking of staying tuned I’m pleased to be part of the revamped Castle Radio operation and I will be once again presenting my programme Indie Andaluz, a weekly look at the local music scene. The station has a great lineup of new presenters which you can read all about in this issue.

Finally, wearing my other hat as vice-president of The Duquesa Charitable Society of St George, I’m pleased to announce that both of our shops are doing really well, thanks in no small part to the great team of volunteers that we have, and besides our regular projects and donations we are looking forward to announcing more support for our local community in the coming months.

El Gobierno de Gibraltar y Shell firman un acuerdo para el suministro de gas natural licuado y la construcción de una terminal

El Gobierno de Gibraltar y Shell han firmado un acuerdo para el suministro de gas natural licuado (GNL) para la generación de electricidad en Gibraltar.

Este acuerdo abarca, asimismo, la construcción de una pequeña unidad de regasificación que recibirá, almacenará y regasificar el GNL que llegará por vía marítima a Gibraltar para su uso en la central eléctrica de gas adyacente, ya en construcción.

La unidad de regasificación estará dirigida por Gasnor, una filial propiedad íntegra de Shell con más de una década de experiencia en el manejo

marítimo y a pequeña escala de GNL en la región noroccidental de Europa. El combustible se almacenará antes de calentarse para devolverlo a su estado gaseoso y suministrarse a la central eléctrica. La unidad también contará con un muelle para un pequeño buque de transporte de GNL que se encargará del suministro de combustible por la noche, de modo que se minimicen al máximo las molestias que pudieran ocasionarse al puerto, al aeropuerto y a los complejos residenciales vecinos.

También existe el potencial para

que se desarrollen operaciones de bunkering de GNL en el futuro, una vez que se lleven a cabo las evaluaciones y comprobaciones medioambientales oportunas.

Tras la aprobación de un sólido informe de evaluación del impacto medioambiental, el inicio de la construcción de la unidad de regasificación está previsto a finales de 2016.

Asimismo, ésta se pondrá en marcha y se empezará a recibir el GNL antes de la inauguración de la central eléctrica, prevista en el segundo semestre de 2017.

Gibraltar and Royal Dutch Shell sign agreement for liquefied natural gas supply and terminal The Government of Gibraltar and Shell have recently signed an agreement for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for use in power generation in Gibraltar.

This agreement includes the construction of a small regasification unit that will receive, store and regasify the LNG arriving by ship for use in Gibraltar’s adjacent gasfired power plant, which is already under construction.

The regasification unit will be operated by Gasnor, a 100% Shell-

owned subsidiary with over ten years of operational experience in LNG for marine and small scale LNG in North Western Europe.

The LNG will be stored before being warmed up to its original gaseous state and then piped to the power plant. The unit will also include a berth for a small LNG carrier that will supply the LNG at night, minimising disruption to the neighbouring port, airport and housing estates.

There is also potential for LNG

bunkering operations in the future, following the appropriate environmental assessments and safeguards.

Following the recent approval of a robust Environmental Impact Assessment report, construction of the regasification unit is planned to start towards the end of 2016 with commissioning and first delivery of LNG expected to take place ahead of the startup of the power plant, expected during the second half of 2017.

Nuevo billete gibraltareño de polímero Tal y como se anunció con ocasión de la conmemoración del nacimiento de Sir Joshua Hassan, el Gobierno de Gibraltar pronto emitirá un nuevo billete de polímero de 100 libras esterlinas con la imagen de Sir Joshua Hassan. Éste no sólo será el primer billete de polímero de 100 libras de curso legal, sino que será el primer billete gibraltareño fabricado con este material.

El billete tendrá un tacto más suave que el papel utilizado tradicionalmente, pero será más duradero y se mantendrá limpio durante más tiempo.

Los nuevos billetes de polímero han sido fabricados por De La Rue y se han impreso en sustrato Safeguard. El diseño será similar al billete de papel existente, pero contará con una ventana amplia, que contiene un holograma altamente reflectante, visible

tanto desde el anverso como desde el reverso del billete, con imágenes de Su Majestad la Reina Isabel II y la letra G de Gibraltar.

Mediante el uso de técnicas avanzadas de holografía de plano imagen, el holograma del billete ofrecerá un alto nivel de seguridad contra la falsificación mientras que mostrará, al mismo tiempo, toda la claridad, el color, el movimiento y la profundidad real que pueden conseguirse con un sustrato de polímero.

El Ministro Principal, Fabián Picardo, declaró: “Estamos orgullosos de emitir un billete de 100 libras esterlinas a la vanguardia del diseño, con unas características de seguridad sin parangón. De La Rue ha trabajado codo con codo con nosotros para garantizar el éxito de esta emisión, por lo que les estamos muy agradecidos”.

Gibraltar’s new polymer banknote As announced at last August’s commemoration of the birth of Sir Joshua Hassan, HM Government of Gibraltar is soon to issue a new polymer £100 banknote featuring an image of Sir Joshua. Not only will this be the first ever legal tender of £100 sterling banknote to be produced in polymer, it will also be Gibraltar's first sterling banknote to be produced in this material. The note will have a smoother feel than traditional banknote paper but it will be more durable and will stay cleaner for longer.

The new polymer banknotes have been produced by De La Rue and printed on Safeguard® substrate.

The design will be similar to the existing paper banknote but with a large clear window showing a hologram which can be seen from

both the front and back of the note and which will be highly reflective, showing images of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the letter G for Gibraltar. UsingAdvanced Image Plane holography, the hologram on the note will offer high levels of security against counterfeiting whilst simultaneously showcasing all the clarity, colour, movement and true depth achievable on a polymer substrate.

Chief Minister, the Hon Fabian Picardo QC said, “We are proud to be issuing a £100 note which is at the cutting edge of banknote design and whose security features are second to none. De La Rue has worked closely with us to achieve this successful launch and we are most grateful to them”.

Dubai se alza con la Cartier Gold Cup de polo en Sotogrande

Dubai ganó la Cartier Gold Cup, el trofeo más importante del 45 Torneo de Polo INDI Internacional, derrotando a Ayala Polo por 12-7 en la final.

El partido se jugó en el Santa María Polo Club en presencia del anterior monarca español el Rey Juan Carlos I, que estuvo

acompañado por el Alcalde de San Roque, Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix y el vicepresidente de la Junta de Andalucía, Manuel Jiménez Barrios en la ceremonia de entrega de premios.

Dubai derrotó a Lechuza Caracas por 12-5 para llegar a la final, mientras que Ayala hizo lo

Se han realizado trabajos urgentes en la desembocadura del Río Guadiaro en Sotogrande

Los trabajadores municipales de San Roque han realizado trabajos urgentes para despejar un canal en la desembocadura del Río Guadiaro en Sotogrande, que estaba bloqueado por una acumulación de arena durante las últimas dos semanas.

Esto provocó un estancamiento de las aguas que amenazaba a la vida de los peces y otras criaturas acuáticas del río debido a la falta de oxígeno en el agua.

Se desplazó maquinaría para crear un

canal de cinco metros que permitiría a las aguas fluir de nuevo, y recibir de nuevo agua fresca y con oxígeno.

Un grupo de presión medioambiental local, Asociación Ecologista Verdemar, había pedido reiteradamente medidas a la Autoridad Costera que prometieron dragar la entrada, pero el ayuntamiento se ha adelantado para crear un canal provisional, dada la urgencia de la situación.

Urgent works carried out to open the mouth of Rio Guadiaro in Sotogrande Municipal workers in San Roque have carried out urgent works to clear a channel at the mouth of the Rio Guadiaro in Sotogrande which has been blocked by a buildup of sand for the last couple of weeks.

This has led to stagnation in the river which has threatened the life of fish and other marine creatures in the river due to lack of oxygen in the water.

Machinery was brought in to create a 5 metre

wide channel which will allow the waters to flow again bringing fresh, oxygen rich water from upstream.

A local environmental pressure group, Asociación Ecologista Verdemar, have repeatedly called for action from the Coastal Authority who have promised to dredge the entrance, but the town hall stepped in to create a channel in the meantime, given the urgency of the situation.

El Ayuntamiento de Casares lanza una campaña contra la contaminación acústica El Ruido es Contaminación, Campaña contra la Contaminación Acústica Verano 2016, es el nombre de la nueva campaña de la Concejalía de Medio Ambiente. Una serie de folletos y cuñas de radio, se encargarán de hacer llegar a los vecinos toda la información, con la normativa al respeto y con los daños que ocasiona el ruido no deseado.

La campaña de concienciación trata de difundir todos los problemas que acarrean en las personas el denominado ruido ajeno. Destacando algunos inconvenientes producidos como la pérdida auditiva, el estrés, la alta presión sanguínea o la dificultad para conciliar el sueño.

Al mismo tiempo, la campaña pone en conocimiento de los ciudadanos la normativa aplicable en materia de ruido, con indicaciones como no poner la música alta de noche entre las 23:00h y las 8:00h; no utilizar la

bocina del coche salvo en casos necesarios; evitar portazos en casa o el uso de electrodomésticos en períodos de descanso, entre otras.

La concejala de Medio Ambiente, Noelia Rodríguez, ha explicado que “el ruido es sonido no

deseado, y en la actualidad se encuentra entre los contaminantes más invasivos, por lo que desde las Administraciones Públicas tenemos que poner el esfuerzo en disminuir todo lo que se pueda este tipo de contaminación, por el bienestar de los vecinos”

“Noise is Pollution, Campaign Against Summer Acoustic Contamination” is the name of an initiative introduced the the Casares Environment Department, which includes a series of brochures and radio adverts to inform local visitors and residents of the rules and the nuisance and even health risks caused by unwanted noise.

The awareness campaign highlights some of the health issues caused by excess noise, such as hearing loss, stress, high blood pressure and sleep deprivation.

The campaign also draws to peo-

ple’s attention the laws concerning noise such as no loud music between the hours of 11 pm and 8 am; use of car horns only when necessary; avoid slamming doors in the home and not to use appliances during rest periods.

According to the Casares Councillor for the Environment, Noelia Rodriguez, “noise is unwanted sound, and these days in one of the most invasive pollutants, requiring effort by local authorities to reduce its effects for the welfare of the local population”.

Casares celebra la festividad de la Virgen del Rosario del Campo el 3 de septiembre Los actos litúrgicos comienzan el martes 30 de agosto con el traslado de la imagen de la Patrona desde la capilla en la Plaza de España hasta la iglesia del Convento, donde todos los días a las 19.30h se rezará el Rosario y habrá misa que estará dedicada el miércoles a los adultos, el jueves a los jóvenes y el viernes a los niños, la famosa misa en la que los casareñitos nacidos en este último año son presentados a la Patrona.

La Festividad de la Patrona se celebra el sábado primero de septiembre, este año cae en día 3, una jornada de actividades que comienza desde muy temprano, a las 7:00h de la mañana con el Santo Rosario de la Aurora. Ese día habrá una misa flamenca a las 12.30h a la que seguirá un almuerzo de convivencia en el Llano de la Fuente que como cada año contará con la colaboración de muchos de los vecinos asistentes que aportan platos cocinados por ellos.

Ya por la tarde, a las 20.00 el párroco de Casares José Antonio Melgar junto al reverendo Gabriel Pérez, ofrecerán una misa en el Iglesia de la Encarnación, cantada por el Coro de la Hermandad. Y a continuación, a las 21.30 horas, saldrá la Virgen en procesión hasta el Peñón “Roao”. Una vez finalizado el recorrido y al volver

a la Plaza, tendrá lugar el pregón, que este año ofrecerá Antonia Ledesma Pascual. Después del pregón cantará Juan Jesús Romo “El Maestro”, acompañado a la guitarra por “Potajito”.

Al finalizar, el Coro de la

Hermandad cantará la Salve.

La jornada finaliza con la actuación de la orquesta La Gala, que se extenderá hasta la madrugada.

Casares celebrates its patron saint, the Virgen del Rosario del Campo on September 3

Events begin on August 30 with the transfer on the statue of the Virgen from the Chapel in Plaza España to the Iglesia del Convento church, where there will be a Mass for adults on Wednesday; one for children on the Thursday; and on Friday the most important Mass for those children born during the previous 12 months who will be presented to the Patron.

The Virgen del Rosario del Campo Festival falls each year on the

first Saturday in September with activities starting early with the Santo Rosario de la Aurora at 7 am. At 12.30 pm there will be the flamenco mass followed by a party for local residents in the Llano de la Fuente.

At 8 pm there will be a Mass followed by a procession of the Virgen to the Peñón “Roao”.

The festivities are rounded off with music and dancing into the early hours with the band La Gala.

Nueva adjudicación de huertos sociales en Casares Costa

La Feria del Cristo cierra los eventos del verano en Casares

Tras la apertura de un primer plazo en el que se adjudicaron 10 de los 20 huertos de ocio a jubilados, pensionistas y personas inscritas en el Programa de Inserción Social, la Tenencia de Alcaldía Municipal abría un nuevo plazo de solicitud el pasado mes de julio, está vez diri gido a la población en general.

Han sido 7 las solicitudes recibidas, por lo que el próximo miércoles se procederá a la entrega de las parcelas.

El Ayuntamiento hace entrega de los terrenos acondicionados y limpios, y los adjudicatarios tienen la obligación de mantener su huerto cuidado y en buen estado. El uso para el que se destina es el de huerto de ocio, con la intención de que los vecinos puedan plantar alimentos.

Casares termina su temporada de verano con la Feria del Cristo desde el 9 al 11 de septiembre. Este festival tradicional se celebraba a finales del verano cuando Casares era principalmente un pueblo agrícola.

This traditional festival originally celebrated the end of the summer festival back when Casares was primarily an agricultural town.

The fair features traditional music and dance with performances in

Plaza de España and the Paseo de la Carrera, with the youth zone in Plaza Marcelino Camacho.

Included in the festival is the procession of the Holy Christ which parades through the streets on the Saturday from 9 pm accompanied by the town band.

More allotments allocated to local residents on Casares Costa

ollowing the opening of a first 10 of the 20 allotments, which have been set aside for pensioners and persons enrolled in the Program for Social Integration, an invitation to apply for an allotment was extended to

the the general population. Seven applications have been received, and next Wednesday the plots will be allocated to the successful applicants.

The allotments are located in Marina de Casares and the Town

Hall has provided the plots, which measure 100 square metres, cleared, cultivated and ready for use. The upkeep and maintenance of the plots are the responsibility of the tenants.

Escolares de Casares recrean un pleno para debatir propuestas culturales El sitio que habitualmente ocupan los concejales del Ayuntamiento de Casares ayer fue asumido por alumnos de 8 a 12 años del colegio Blas Infante.

A través del programa de Participación Ciudadana Ágora, estos escolares debatieron sobre la programación de actividades culturales y festivas de la Navidad, unas decisiones que se serán estudiadas por el equipo de gobierno una vez se aprueben.

Entre las propuestas diseñadas por los alumnos, destaca su participación en el Belén Viviente con un taller de barro; decorar un árbol de Navidad entre todos ellos; una fiesta con un cañón de nieve; un cine navideño y una cabalgata que entregue juguetes a los pequeños. Además los escolares solicitaron un buzón de sugerencias para que todos los niños del pueblo puedan opinar y sugerir nuevas ideas.

Agora Councillor for Citizen Participation and Education, Rocio Ruiz, explained that at this stage of the Agora program, participants

will prepare a proposal for seven sessions of children's cultural activities for next autumn-winter.

This part is being developed at the play center that takes place during the month of August.

This phase adds to earlier events in this child citizen participation program, which began in late March in Casares, in which the CEIP Blas Infante school made contact with the public institution.

Activities already scheduled for the summer will begin today with a potholing route designed by them.

Finalizadas las piscinas naturales de los Baños de la Hedionda Esta mañana quedan concluidos los trabajos, ejecutados en apenas 4 días.

Con estas obras, impulsadas y financiadas por el Ayuntamiento de Casares, se ha creado una nueva zona de baño exterior construida completamente con materiales de la zona con lo que han quedado totalmente integrada en el ambiente.

Un proyecto con el que el equipo de gobierno intenta preservar el recinto histórico al disminuir la afluencia de bañistas al interior de la cúpula.

Desde el Consistorio se vuelve a pedir disculpa a los usuarios por las molestias que hayan podido ocasionar los trabajos, pero hasta este mes no se ha contado con la autorización de la Consejería de Medio Ambiente, explica la Concejala de Cultura Rocío Ruiz.

Además, realizándose ahora permite que se pueda disfrutar de estas pozas naturales lo que queda de verano.

Los trabajos han consistido en la construcción de dos muros en el cauce que va desde los baños al río y una ligera inclinación

del lecho, de forma que no interrumpiera el flujo actual del agua. Han contado con todas las autorizaciones pertinentes y han estado supervisados por un arqueólogo, al igual que la puesta en valor de estos Baños realizada antes de la temporada estival.

Casares town hall, this initiative has created a new outdoor bathing area built entirely with local

materials which are fully integrated into the environment.

The project hopes to preserve the historic site by decreasing the number of bathers inside the dome itself.

The town hall apologises to users for any inconvenience that the works may have brought about, but the authorization from the Ministry of Environment only came through this month, explained Councillor for Culture Rocio Ruiz. Everyone will now be able to enjoy these natural pools during what's left of the summer.

Two walls have been built in the channel leading from the bathing room to the river and a slight inclination of the bed has been added so as not to interrupt the current flow of water. They have had all the necessary approvals and have been supervised by an archaeologist, like the renovation undertaken before the summer period.

El Ayuntamiento de Casares continúa mejorando su servicio sanitario con la ambulancia, el médico de urgencias y el buggy socio-sanitario Faltan apenas dos meses para terminar el contrato que el Ayuntamiento mantiene con la empresa adjudicataria de la ambulancia, por lo que ya se trabaja en el nuevo pliego de condiciones de cara a una nueva contratación. El Alcalde de Casares Pepe Carrasco, ha mantenido varias conversaciones con el Director del Distrito Sanitario de nuestra área, con la intención de preparar ya las nuevas condiciones que regirán el futuro contrato de la ambulancia.

Carrasco ha explicado que se trata de introducir una serie de mejoras que permitan que el servicio cada vez sea más óptimo.

El primer edil ha recordado el vacío que la Junta de Andalucía mantiene en Casares en materia sanitaria, junto a todos los déficits que presenta la administración autonómica (responsable de la sanidad) en nuestro pueblo. Es por ello

que el Ayuntamiento pone en marcha desde hace años una serie de servicios encaminados a satisfacer las necesidades de los casareños que la Junta no cubre, tales como la ambulancia, el médico de urgencias y el buggy socio sanitario.

La actual ambulancia, cumple con las características generales de las ambulancias de Distrito Sanitario y las específicas del tipo A1, y además cuenta con equipamiento de mejoras para utilizarla como tipo C. No obstante, el contrato llega a su fin a final de octubre, por lo que se está a la espera de mantener en los próximos días una reunión con los técnicos del SAS que concluya en la redacción del nuevo pliego de condiciones.

Desde el Ayuntamiento se estudian ya algunas mejoras posibles a incluir, que serán planteadas a los técnicos del SAS, como unas mayores dimensiones del vehículo.

The Casares town hall continues to improve its health service with the ambulance, the emergency physician and buggy

In just two months the contract that the town has with the ambulance company will be over, so they are already working on the new specifications of the next contract.

Casares Mayor Pepe Carrasco has had several discussions with the director of the area’s Health District, with the intention of preparing the new conditions that will govern the future of the ambulance contract. Carrasco explained that they are introducing a series of improvements which will further optimise the service.

The mayor pointed out the gap that the Junta de Andalucia has allowed to exist in Casares on the subject of health, with all the deficits presented by the regional administration (responsible for

health) in our village. That is why the town hall has launched a series of initiatives over the years designed to meet the needs of the residents of Casares that the Junta does not cover, such as an ambulance, emergency medical care and the buggy.

The current ambulance, complies with the general characteristics of ambulances in the Health District and the specifics of the A1 type, and also has equipment upgrades for use as type C. However, the contract comes to an end at the end of October, and the town is awaiting a meeting with the SAS technicians to conclude the drafting of the new improvements, such as a larger vehice, over the coming days.

FIESTA DE LA VENDIMIA La fiesta de la vendimia es una de las más representativas de la localidad, en la que se conjugan la fiesta y la tradición vitivinícola manilveña, haciendo una perfecta unión en la que la diversión está asegurada.

Nuestra Señora de los Dolores recorrerá un año más las principales calles del núcleo de Manilva.

El sábado 3 de septiembre a partir de las siete de la tarde, se celebrará la santa misa cantada por la coral Santa Ana de la localidad. Tras la celebración de la misma, la virgen será procesionada por la calle iglesia hacia calle Mar, con el acompañamiento de la Banda de Música de Manilva.

Uno de los momentos más emotivos de estas fiestas sucederá cuando en el escenario ubicado en la calle Mar, se proceda a la ofrenda de uva de los agricultores manilveños.

Además se conocerá también a los ganadores del concurso al racimo de uva más grande, que está dotado con un tercer premio de 100 €, un segundo de 150 y el

juventud ya prepara también la zona dedicada a los más jóvenes, en la plaza de la Vendimia, que desde el año pasado acoge a este sector de población.

Vendimia Programme Friday 2nd September The weekend kicks off with the XXXVI Vendimia Flamenco Festival from 10 pm at the Pablo Picasso primary school.

Saturday, 3rd September Along with the Axarquia and the Montes de Malaga areas, Manilva is an important centre for the production of the Moscatel grape which, when dried on the local hillsides, provides the world famous 'Pasas de Malaga', the Malaga raisin, as well as a range of wines from dry to the sweet 'Malaga' wine.

There have been vineyards in Manilva since the 16th Century but the industry enjoyed its heyday during the 17th and 18th centuries when Manilva was a major producer of wines and brandies.

Unfortunately the local vineyards saw a decline during the 19th century which culminated in the destruction of the vines by the Phylloxera epidemic which

decimated vineyards throughout Europe in the 1860s.

It wasn't until after the Spanish Civil War that Manilva took up grape growing as an important economic activity centred on the sweet Moscatel grape which is ideally suited to Manilva's climate, situation and soil type.

Every year, on the first weekend in September, Manilva celebrates its annual grape harvest. This festival was founded in the early '60s and has become an important part of the local calendar, drawing in visitors from across the region.

Most of the events and activities take place in and around Manilva’s main street, Calle Mar, The Wine Centre, and the Plaza de la Vendimia square.

In the afternoon from 7 pm there will be a Mass in honour of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores and a performance by the church choir in the Iglesia Santa Ana. Afterwards the Virgen will be borne from the church to the stage in Calle Mar where she will be presented with an offering of grapes, after which the competition for the best bunch of grapes takes place.

Sunday, 4th September Midday sees the inauguration of the Day Feria with music, dancing and plenty of food and drink throughout the afternoon and evening. Later in the afternoon at around 5 pm there is a procession of riders through the streets, followed at around 7 pm by the ceremonial first treading of the grapes and a chance to sample the first 'mosto' grape juice of the season.

The music then continues into the early hours.

Manilva verá nacer sobre el mes de marzo del próximo año, un nuevo vino de la tierra

Manilva will witness the birth of a new local wine next March

El alcalde de Manilva, Diego José Jiménez, acompañado del delegado de agricultura, Francisco Becerra, han mantenido un encuentro con Argimiro Martínez, gerente de Nilva Enoturismo y el bodeguero y enólogo gallego Marcos Lojo, responsable de la elaboración del vino albariño Chan de Rosas. En la reunión se han tratado diversos asuntos relacionados con un futuro proyecto de implantación de una bodega en nuestra localidad, de donde saldrían dos caldos, un vino blanco seco con uva de la tierra, la conocida moscatel de Alejandría, así como uno dulce.

La casualidad hizo que Lojo, que veranea en la costa del sol, en un desplazamiento hacia Tarifa viese nuestros viñedos y se interesase por ellos. Así comenzó una andadura, que se ha convertido en fase experimental, en la creación de un primer vino blanco seco con el que ya se trabaja en la bodega del CIVIMA. Tras contactar con Argimiro Martínez, ambos empresarios han comenzado a trabajar en este primer embrión, que según comentaba el empresario gallego, puede acabar con la implantación de una bodega en la localidad.

Dos mil litros, en torno a 2500 botellas, se elaborarán en esta primera fase, en la que se ha puesto mucha ilusión. Aunque en un primer momento se pensó comercializar bajo el nombre de Chan de Rosas, actualmente Lojo ya piensa en una marca propia para este caldo.

At the meeting they addressed various issues relating to a future project for the installment of a winery in the town, hoping to produce two wines, a dry white wine using the local strain of grape, the muscat of Alexandria, as well as a sweet wine.

By chance Lojo, who spends his summers on the Costa del Sol, saw the vineyards in the area while passing through on his way to Tarifa and has taken an interest in them. Thus began a journey that has become an experiment in creating the first dry white wine on which work is ongoing at the CIVIMA facilities. After contacting Argimiro Martinez, both entrepreneurs began to work on this first embryo, which according to the Galician businessman may end in the development of a winery in the town.

Two thousand liters, around 2500 bottles, will be produced in this first phase, which has already proved very exciting. Although initially to be marketed under the Chan

Por su parte, el alcalde de Manilva dejó entrever su satisfacción por el interés del empresario y mostró su apoyo a la iniciativa. Cabe recordar, que el actual equipo de gobierno, no ha cesado desde el comienzo de la legislatura en la

realización de actividades para promover el viñedo de nuestro municipio, una labor ancestral, que se ha visto muy mermada en los últimos años y que poco a poco comienza a resurgir.

El delegado de agricultura, Francisco Becerra, resaltó la importancia que tiene para Manilva, que empresarios de este nivel se fijen en nuestros viñedos, ya que según resaltó, uno de los objetivos municipales es que los agricultores puedan vivir dignamente del trabajo del campo.

Otro de los objetivos del equipo de gobierno es conjugar la enología con el Turismo, para atraer a un sector que cada vez gana más adeptos.

El nuevo vino ya comienza su maceración en la bodega y sobre el mes de marzo se podrá degustar ese primer caldo, al que aunque aún no ha nacido, le deseamos un gran futuro.

El Festival de la Vendimia abrirá la temporada de actividades de la Peña Flamenca La Peña Cultural Flamenca de Manilva sigue recordando los eventos que tendrán lugar durante la próxima temporada.

La primera cita de este nuevo periodo tendrá lugar el 2 de septiembre con el Festival flamenco de la Vendimia.

El 5 de noviembre el CIVIMA acogerá la actuación de Guillermo Cano.

El 17 de diciembre está prevista la segunda Zambombá flamenca, que acogerá la casa de los Torres en Manilva.

El calendario de actividades en 2017 se iniciará el 1 de marzo con el espectáculo “A la luz del cante” de Antonia Contreras, en el auditorio del centro de interpretación.

El programa lo cierra el 22 de julio del próximo año, la cena de

gala con actuación en el patio de la casa de los Torres, sede de esta entidad.

XXXVI Vendimia Flamenco Festival Now celebrating its 36th year, the annual flamenco festival, which coincides with Manilva Grape Festival, will be held at Manilva’s Pablo Picasso primary school on Friday 2 September from 10 pm.

Organised by the Peña Cultural flamenca de Manilva in collaboration with the town’s Cultural Department, headed by Councillor Alba Jimenez, this year’s line up features singers Miguel de Tena, Antonia Contreras, Virginia Gámez and Raúl Montesino, accompanied on guitar by Marcos Serrato, Juan Ramón Caro, Andrés Cansino and Antonio Soto.

Aficionados of flamenco dance can enjoy performances by the Jose Lucena Flamenco Quartet and the Almogia Panda de Verdiales.

Un autobús viajará hasta esta bonita localidad malagueña, para disfrutar de una de sus fiestas más representativas.

Guaro se convierte, en el mes de Septiembre en punto de encuentro de la música y la cultura andalusí, para dejar patente la interrelación cultural e histórica entre las tres religiones dominantes: cristiana, musulmana y sefardí que existió en el medievo en esta villa.

Con la única iluminación de la luz de más de 20.000 velas, distribuidas por el casco antiguo, la música arábigo-andalusísefardí toma las calles y plazas de esta villa en las cuales se puede oír en directo la música que se oía hace cinco siglos en este lugar.

Trip to Guaro

Manilva’s Foreign Residents Department has organised a trip to Guaro to enjoy the town’s famous ‘Luna Mora’ Festival on Friday 9 September.

During September, Guaro becomes a focal point for Andalucian music and culture, celebrating the historical and cultural relationship between the three dominant influences of the Middle Ages in the town: Islam, Christianity, and the Sephardic Jews.

El servicio de bono-taxi de asuntos sociales se pone The Social Services Bono-Taxi service will begin on September 1 en marcha el 1 de septiembre La Delegación de Asuntos Sociales, que dirige Patricia Recio, ha llegado a un acuerdo con los taxistas locales para la implantación del servicio de bono-taxi o taxi vecinal como es conocido coloquialmente.

El servicio, pionero en la localidad, permitirá que desde el próximo 1 de septiembre todas aquellas personas incluidas en el programa de Asuntos Sociales, tras la aprobación de esta área, puedan acudir a los Hospitales de Marbella y Málaga, por un precio reducido.

En este caso, los taxistas incluidos en el programa deberán recoger al cliente en su domicilio, esperar a que pase la consulta y retornarle a su propio domicilio por el precio indicado. La cantidad restante hasta el precio fijado será abonada por el propio Ayuntamiento de Manilva.

En el caso del Hospital Costa del Sol, la persona beneficiaria deberá abonar la cantidad de 20 euros, siendo por cuenta del ayuntamiento los 40 euros restantes hasta el precio final que será la retribución que perciba el taxista. En cuanto a los viajes a Málaga, serán de 40 euros por parte del beneficiario y 80 euros por parte del Ayuntamiento.

El bono-taxi irá dirigido

fundamentalmente a aquellas personas que están empadronadas en el municipio, con dificultades de movilidad, que no posean vehículo propio y se encuentren entre los siguientes colectivos de Personas mayores de 75 años; personas mayores de 65 años con problemas de movilidad; aquellas personas que tengan una movilidad reducida reconocida a tenor de la letra A del anexo II del reglamento General de Vehículos y Aquellas personas que tengan problemas de movilidad acreditada y reconocida por la Delegación de Asuntos Sociales.

El servicio que comenzará a

funcionar el 1 de septiembre permitirá mejorar las condiciones de acceso de los vecinos con problemas de salud a la sanidad pública y favorecer a un colectivo sometido al turismo estacional de Manilva como son los taxistas.

Según Patricia Recio, han sido muchas las demandas que se han recibido por parte de vecinos con problemas de movilidad y en circunstancias sociales precarias que tienen graves dificultades para que les atiendan en el Hospital. El Ayuntamiento ha buscado una fórmula de carácter objetivo que permite que todos puedan acceder a la sanidad pública en igualdad de condiciones.

The department of Social Affairs, headed by Patricia Recio, has reached an agreement with local taxi drivers to implement the ‘Bono’ or neighbourhood taxi service as it is commonly referred to.

The service, the first in the area, will allow all those included in the Social Services programme, following their approval, to go to hospitals in Marbella and Malaga for a reduced price starting on September 1.

In this eventuality, the drivers included in the programme must collect the customer at home, wait for their consultation to end and return them to their home for the aforementioned discounted price.

The remainder of the fixed price will be paid by the Manilva Town Hall.

In the case of the Costa del Sol Hospital, the beneficiary will pay an amount of 20 euros, and the municipality will provide the remaining 40 euros. As for travel to Malaga, 40 euros will be the cost to the customer and 80 euros will come from the town’s coffers.

The taxi voucher will target

mainly those who are registered in the municipality, with mobility issues, who do not have their own vehicle and meet the following requirements: People over 75 years; people over 65 years with mobility problems; those who have a recognized mobility issue according to point A of Annex II of the General Vehicle Regulations and those who have mobility problems accredited and recognized by the Department of Social Affairs.

The service will start operating on September 1 to improve access for residents with health problems to public health services and to encourage a collective subject to seasonal tourism in Manilva, such as taxi drivers.

According to Patricia Recio, there have been many claims made by residents with mobility problems and poor social circumstances of serious difficulties in attending hospital appointments. The Town Hall has sought a solution which allows everyone to access public health services on an equal footing.

Colaboración entre los ayuntamientos de Manilva y Casares El concejal de Extranjeros, Dean Tyler Shelton, se ha reunido con Antonia Pineda, concejala de Extranjeros y Comercio en el Ayuntamiento de Casares, para desarrollar actividades conjuntas con motivo de la creación de la próxima agenda de eventos 2016/2017, cuya presentación tendrá lugar el 24 de Septiembre a las 19:00hs en el Castillo de la Duquesa.

Esta toma de contacto tiene el objetivo de aunar criterios y colaborar en las actividades que puedan tener un denominador común.

Según comentaba el citado edil: "todo lo que sea mejorar y que tanto nuestros ciudadanos como los vecinos de Casares puedan

disfrutar de un buen programa será motivo de satisfacción para nosotros", apuntó.

III Maratón BTT de la Vendimia Comienza la cuenta atrás para la celebración de la III edición de la Maratón de la Vendimia de Manilva, puntuable para el Campeonato Provincial malagueño de Diputación.

Esta prueba, que se llevará a cabo el próximo 24 de septiembre, ha sido organizada por el Ayuntamiento de Manilva, Delegación de Deportes y el Club Ciclista Manilva. Cuenta además con la colaboración del Club de senderistas Los Kruos, Moto Club Manilva, Nutrisport, la Federación Andaluza de Ciclismo, Diputación provincial de Málaga y numerosas empresas del municipio, que ha querido apoyar esta iniciativa.

El recorrido oficial tendrá una distancia de 64 kilómetros con salida desde la puerta del Ayuntamiento, al igual que el pasado año. La prueba también ofrecerá una alternativa cicloturista que contará con 45 kilómetros y menos dureza para que todos los aficionados puedan

disfrutar del ambiente de una prueba de estas características.

Como novedad, este año se incorporan por primera vez en una maratón 5 tramos cronometrados en diversos puntos del recorrido y de diferentes distancias, en los que se premiará con un maillot conmemorativo a los más rápidos en cada uno de estos sectores el día de la prueba.

Las inscripciones pueden realizarse a través de la web de la Federación Andaluza de Ciclismo, con un límite de 400 participantes.

Club de Tenis de mesa de Manilva El tenis de mesa es ahora otra actividad disponible para los residentes locales, con la creación del Club de tenis de mesa de Manilva. El club se reúne en el pabellón deportivo de Sabinillas todos los martes entre las 7 pm y las 9 pm y actualmente tiene dos mesas, que pronto se convertirán en cinco.

III Manilva ‘Vendimia’ Mountain Bike Marathon

Manilva Table Tennis Club Table tennis is now another activity available for local residents to enjoy, with the formation of the Manilva Table Tennis Club. Founded by John Ullger with the aim of providing an opportunity for those wishing to practice or take up the sport from scratch to do so locally.

The club meets at the Sabinillas sportshall every Tuesday between 7 pm and 9 pm and currently has two tables, which will be increasing very shortly to five.

John is an experienced coach so don’t worry if you’ve never played as he will soon have up and run-

ning.

Manilva to host its III ‘Vendiimia’ Mountain Bike Festival this month as part of the Malaga Provincial Mountain Bike Championships.

Organised by Manilva Town Hall’s Sports Department and the Manilva Cycling Club, in collaboration with the Kruos Hiking club, Manilva Motorcycle Club, Nutrisport and the Malaga Provincial Council, with the support of numerous local companies, this leg of the championships will be held on Saturday 24 September.

There are two categories, the official route being 64 kms long departing from the Town Hall in

Manilva, there will also be an easier ‘fun ride’ of 45 kms for those wishing to participate outside of the official competition.

This year the organisers have incorporated into the marathon five time trial sections with winners jerseys being presented for the winner of each one.

Invertirá 5 millones de euros en un Estadio de Atletismo con parking para casi mil plazas El alcalde de Estepona, José María García Urbano, ha presentado hoy el proyecto para dotar a la ciudad de un Estadio de Atletismo homologado para competiciones. Esta actuación contempla la construcción de una pista de atletismo con una superficie de 16.488 metros cuadrados, con aparcamiento de casi un millar de plazas - tanto en el interior como exterior - e instalaciones anejas de locales con un total de 3.000 metros cuadrados de superficie que serán destinados a futuros usos culturales-deportivos.

El recinto permitirá además de la práctica de actividades de carrera, la realización de las relacionadas con el salto (altura, pértiga, longitud) y albergará en el interior un campo de fútbol y de fútbol 7. El proyecto contempla una gran plaza de acceso y zonas deportivas comunes al aire libre.

Junto a ello, una zona de BMX en los exteriores. El proyecto saldrá a licitación en los próximos días y se estima que la obra esté finalizada en un año.

El área de actuación sobre el

que se desarrollará el proyecto comprende un total de 34.182 metros cuadrados, de ellos, casi 20.000 metros cuadrados serán de zonas ajardinadas.

El proyecto, que supondrá una inversión de cinco millones de euros (IVA incluido), contribuirá a la consolidación de la zona como deportiva-lúdica dentro de Estepona, la más importante y que ha logrado en los últimos años un espectacular crecimiento, consiguiendo con esta actuación complementar la oferta de ocio y dotar de aparcamiento suficiente a los usos que se desarrollan en el entorno, tales como el Parque Ferial y Deportivo, el campo de futbol Muñoz Pérez, el Auditorio Felipe VI, la pista de Karting, ahora pista de atletismo, y en el futuro, el parque fluvial proyectado en el Monterroso.

En relación al aparcamiento, se plantea un parking en dos niveles bajo el estadio de atletismo, con la misma extensión superficial que ella: un Nivel 0 (Planta Baja) con acceso directo desde

The Town Hall will invest 5 million euros in an athletics stadium with parking for nearly a thousand vehicles The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, has just announced a project to provide the town with a certified Athletic Stadium for competitions. This project involves the construction of a 16,488 square meter running track, with parking for nearly a thousand vehicles - both inside and outside - and adjacent premises comprising a total of 3,000 square meters destined for future cultural-sports uses.

The facilities will provide a space for running enthusiasts as well as those practising sports involving jumps (high jumps, pole vaulting, long jumps). It will also house football and football 7 fields. In addition to this building, the project includes a square leading to the main entrance and an outdoor sports areas.

Along with this, there will be outdoor ​​BMX facilities. The project will tender in the coming days and it is estimated that the work will be completed in a year.

The initiative covers a total of 34,182 square meters, of which nearly 20,000 square meters will be landscaped gardens.

This entire project will require an investment of five million euros (VAT included), contributing to the consolidation of the area as a sports-leisure hot spot in Estepona, it’s most important action to date, and will further add to the spectacular growth achieved over

recent years while also providing parking space for a variety of other facilities nearby such as the fair and sports site, the Muñoz Pérez football field, Felipe VI Auditorium, karting track (now used as a running track) and in the future, the waterpark in Monterroso.

The parking space will be spread over two levels below the athletics stadium, with the same surface area: at Level 0 (Ground Floor) there will be access to the main street on the same level, and Level 1 ( first floor) will lead out onto the opposite street one level above, so the track is raised in relation to the main street but level with the one which adjoins the fair site, facilitating both pedestrian and road access.

The finished product will be a semiunderground parking with a total of 836 free spaces under the track and local area - 3,000 square meters in total - for future sports events. Add to this a number of complementary facilities on different levels such as locker rooms, warehouses, areas for the athletes, boxes or covered stands with seating for 1,800 people.

The building has many pedestrian access points and a double road access to the two floors of parking for two different streets, providing more flexibility.

José Luis Garci abrirá la XVII Semana Internacional de Cine Fantástico, dedicada a los viajes en el tiempo Estepona ha presentado la XVII Semana Internacional de Cine Fantástico, que se celebrará del 3 al 10 de septiembre, y que contará con la presencia de José Luis Garci. El director será el encargado de abrir la sesión inaugural del festival, el sábado 3 de septiembre, a las 20 horas, con un duelo dialéctico con el poeta Luis Alberto de Cuenca sobre Sherlock Holmes, que finalizará con la proyección de la película 'Holmes y Watson, Madrid Days' (2012) dirigida por Garci. La actividad tendrá lugar en el centro cultural Padre Manuel.

La actriz María Casal será la madrina de esta edición del festival. Hija de Antonio Casal, galán y figura del cine y el teatro español de los años 50, 60 y 70, la actriz cuenta con una extensa carrera interpretativa en el cine, el teatro y la televisión donde destacan las películas 'Piedras' de Ramón Salazar y 'Extraños' de Imanol Uribe; las series 'Hospital Central', 'Menudo es mi padre', '700 euros', 'La que se avecina' y 'El Caso'; y las obras 'Las Leandras', 'El aperitivo', 'Por la calle de Alcalá' o 'El hotelito' de Antonio Gala. A este bagaje hay que añadir la comedia 'Lobas', una obra teatral en tono de humor ágil e impetuoso, escrita, dirigida y protagonizada por ella misma, y que presentó el pasado año en el Auditorio Felipe VI, en Estepona.

Ruzafa ha afirmado que “es todo un honor para Estepona poder contar con una artista como María Casal de madrina del festival”; al tiempo que ha añadido que “el equipo de gobierno sigue apostando por la cultura, en todas sus vertientes, para que la ciudad sea un destino atractivo durante todo el año”.

Los actos de la semana de cine,

que este año tendrá como eje central los viajes en el tiempo, comenzarán el domingo 28 de agosto con un concierto de la Banda Municipal de Estepona donde se interpretará 'La Música y el Cine', formado por banda sonoras originales de películas.

El programa de actos previos a la programación oficial del certamen cinematográfico continuará el día 29 con la apertura de la exposición 'Los Viajeros del Tiempo', en la Casa de la Juventud de Estepona.

Hasta el 15 de septiembre se podrá contemplar todo tipo de material relacionado con los viajes en el tiempo y su presencia en el entretenimiento audiovisual: desde reproducciones de los DeLorean de cada entrega de 'Regreso al Futuro' hasta libros y cómics basados en la obra magna de H. G. Wells 'La máquina del tiempo'.

La Sección Informativa del Festival dará inicio el domingo 4 de septiembre, a las 21:00 horas, en la Plaza del Reloj, con el concierto 'Estepona suena de cine' a cargo de la Orquesta de Cuerda Acantus, que interpretará un repertorio de música para películas y series de televisión, como 'El tiempo entre costuras'.

A continuación, se proyectará 'El Tiempo en sus manos', película de 1960 dirigida por George Pal y protagonizada por Rod Taylor.

La gala de clausura tendrá lugar el sábado 10 de septiembre, a las 20.30 horas, en el Auditorio Felipe VI. En ella, el actor Simón Andreu recibirá el Unicornio de Honor como reconocimiento a su trayectoria, donde sobresale su participación en unas 150 películas, varias de ellas de importantes directores españoles y extranjeros. Participó en uno de los primeros éxitos de Paul Verhoeven, 'Los señores del acero', e incluso en una de las películas de la saga de James Bond: 'Die Another Day'.

El premio especial del jurado será para Antonio Mayans, actor cinematográfico y televisivo español, habitual en la filmografía de los realizadores Jesús Franco y Paul Naschy. El actor malagueño Jaime Ordóñez será reconocido con el premio de la Asociación de Festivales Audiovisuales de Andalucía (ASFAAN). El ilustrador Víctor Marín recogerá el premio al Mejor Ilustrador y la serie 'El Misterio del tiempo' recibirá el reconocimiento a la Mejor Serie de Televisión 2016.

Time Travel is the theme for this year’s XVII International Fantasy Film Festival

E

very September for the past sixteen years Estepona has been the centre of the world of horror and fantasy cinema with the celebration of the Costa del Sol International Fantasy Film Week, showcasing some of the best (and not so best) cinematic works of this genre.

This 17th edition of the week long celebration of the Horror and Fantasy genre includes a number of awards for both feature films and shorts as well as TV series, comics and art.

One of the highlights of the festival is the presentation of the Waldemar Daninsky and the Golden Unicorn awards which in the past have won by such luminaries as Ray Harryhausen, Uwe Boll, Christopher Lee, Stuart Gordon, Dolph Lundgren, Kevin Sorbo, and others.

The festival features film screenings, exhibitions, lectures and concerts at various venues in Estepona, Marbella, Benahavis, and Malaga.

This year’s annual International Fantasy Film Festival, which is celebrated from 3 to 10 September, will have time travel as its central theme.

Film director José Luis Garci is one of the participants in the festival and will be opening the event at the Padre Manuel Cultural Centre with a conversation with the poet Luis Alberto de Cuenca on the

subject of Sherlock Holmes, which will conclude with a screening of the 2012 film ‘Holmes y Watson, Madrid Days’ directed by Garci himself.

Also appearing at the festival will be actress Maria Casal. Daughter of Antonio Casal, a star of stage and screen during the 50s, 60s and 70s, she also has had an extensive career in cinema, theatre and television starring in films such as 'Piedras' by Ramón Salazar and 'Extraños' by Imanol Uribe; along with the TV series 'Hospital Central', 'Menudo es mi padre', '700 euros', 'La que se avecina' y 'El Caso'; and in the theatre 'Las Leandras', 'El aperitivo', 'Por la calle de Alcalá' and 'El hotelito' by Antonio Gala. Along with the daily film screenings there are a number of parallel events including an exhibition ‘Time Travellers’ which has opened at the Casa de la Juventud in Plaza de las Flores and which runs until 15 September. On show are a wide range of items including audiovisual presentations and reproductions of the DeLorean from ‘Back to the Future’ as well as books and comics based on H G Wells’ ‘The Time Machine’.

On 4 September from 9 pm there will be a concert in the Plaza del Reloj entitled ‘Estepona Suena de

Cine’ performed by the Orquesta de Cuerda Acantus and featuring music from TV and cinema. This will be followed a screening of the sixties Sci-Fi classic ‘The Time Machine’ starring Rod Taylor.

The festival concludes with a gala award ceremony on 10 September at the Felipe VI Theatre at which actor Simón Andreu will be presented with the Unicornio de Honor in recognition of his career, appearing in some 150 films including Bond film ‘Die Another Day’.

The Special Jury Award goes to film and tv actor Antonio Mayans, a regular in the films of Jesus Franco and festival founder Paul Naschy.

El Ayuntamiento ha anunciado hoy que han comenzado las obras de remodelación de la calle Sevilla, una de las más emblemáticas del casco antiguo. El proyecto, que ha sido adjudicado a la empresa Fajosa S.L por un importe de 379.852 euros, incluye también la remodelación de la calle Aragón. El coste de esta obra

será asumido, íntegramente, por la Diputación Provincial de Málaga, que concedió una subvención para contribuir con el proyecto ‘Estepona, Jardín de la Costa del Sol’.

Velasco ha indicado que el contrato también incluye, como mejora, la reforma de las calles aledañas Silencio y Cristo Rey,

así como el compromiso de dotar de arbolado al casco urbano. En cuanto a los trabajos que se van a ejecutar en las calles Sevilla y Aragón, la responsable municipal ha añadido que consistirán en la renovación del pavimento y el embellecimiento mediante macetería y labores de jardinería.

El Orquidario se estrena como sala de conciertos con la actuación del saxofonista Josh Podaderaez Estepona informa de que el edificio del Orquidario funcionará también como sala de conciertos. El primero de ellos llegará este viernes, 26 de agosto, con la actuación del saxofonista Josh Podaderaez que repetirá el viernes, 2 de septiembre. Estas veladas que llevan por nombre “Noches mágicas” permitirán disfrutar de la buena música en un entorno único como es el orquidario y que, además, cuenta con una acústica excelente.

Las entradas para el evento tendrán un coste de 10 euros y se ofrecerá cava y canapé de bienvenida a los asistentes al mismo. Los pases serán de media hora a las 20:30- 21:00- 21:30 y 22:00 horas y las entradas se pueden adquirir en el Orquidario.

El artista cuenta con una amplia carrera dentro del mundo del jazz y ha ofrecido conciertos por toda la provincia. En 2015 fue el encargado de realizar el concierto inaugural del Málaga Jazz Festival que se celebró en el teatro Echegaray.

¿Qué es la Cláusula Suelo?

La cláusula suelo es aquella cláusula que establece un mínimo a pagar en las cuotas mensuales de la hipoteca, aunque los intereses acordados con la entidad financiera estén por debajo o bien hayan bajado.

Normalmente el tipo de interés que se fija en la mayoría de las hipotecas suele ser el Euribor más un diferencial que suele variar en cada entidad financiera.

Por ejemplo: si su hipoteca establece un tipo de interés de Euribor + 1 y el Euribor esta a 1%, usted debería pagar un 2% de interés. Sin embargo si tiene una hipoteca con una cláusula suelo de un 3%, su cuota se calculara sobre el 3% y no sobre el 2%.

En definitiva la clausula suelo establece el tipo de interés mínimo que se va pagar SIEMPRE, pase lo que pase con el Euribor. Esto se traduce en una limitación en la bajada de las cuotas del comprador cuando los tipos de interés se reducen, ocasionando un perjuicio económico para el usuario que se ve obligado a pagar más dinero cada mes.

¿Son ilegales las cláusulas suelo?

Según los tribunales la mera

inclusión de las clausulas en los prestamos no es ilegal, lo que sí es ilegal es incluirlas sin informar suficientemente a los clientes sobre sus consecuencias. Por lo tanto lo que hacen los tribunales es anularlas, lo que quiere decir es que se tienen por no puestas.

Las entidades financieras tienen la obligación de explicar a los clientes de forma que lo entiendan todas las clausulas que forman el contrato de préstamo.

¿Estoy afectado por la cláusula suelo?

Para saberlo es conveniente que un profesional analice el contrato firmado ya que las palabras “clausula suelo” no suele aparecer literalmente en el texto. Los términos que suelen aparecer son “tipo de interés mínimo, limite a la variabilidad, limite a la aplicación de interés variable, que el tipo de interés no puede ser inferior a X, etc.

Una señal de su existencia es que no hayas visto rebajada tu cuota mensual desde 2009 en adelante.

la más importante en lo que se refiere a las clausulas suelo ya que da la razón a los afectados por las hipotecas de diferentes bancos como BBVA o Cajamar al anular las clausulas suelo. Pero lo importante de dicha sentencia es que establece una retroactividad desde su pronunciamiento, es decir, que únicamente se devolvería el dinero cobrado de más a partir de la fecha de la sentencia. La justificación de ellos está en el grave perjuicio que supondría para la economía española tener que devolver todo el dinero cobrado de más desde la firma de contrato.

Sentencia del Tribunal de la UE Ahora los afectados están a la espera de que el tribunal de la UE dicte sentencia que decida sobre la retroactividad de la anulación de las clausulas suelo, bien que tenga efectos desde el 9 de mayo de 2013 o desde su origen.

El pasado 13 de Julio de 2016 el abogado general del TJUE, Paolo Mengozzi, ya nos ha adelantado, en su informe, que los bancos no tendrán que devolver todo, sino lo cobrado de más desde 2013, con el mismo argumento, que sería un peligro para la economía del país obligar a los bancos a devolver todo el dinero.

Normalmente las decisiones que adopta el TJUE suelen ir en consonancia con las conclusiones del Abogado General con lo cual ya nos podemos hacer una idea hasta que punto podemos reclamar el perjuicio sufrido por las mencionadas clausulas.

What is a Ground Clause (“Clausula Suelo”)?

The ground clause is that which establishes a minimum interest rate payable in monthly mortgage payments, applicable even though the interest rate agreed with the financial institution is lower or has reduced.

Usually the agreed interest rate is calculated using the Euribor, (Euro Interbank Offered Rate), plus an additional percentage rate set by the finance company. This percentage rate can vary depending upon which financial institution is involved.

For example, if your mortgage establishes an interest rate of Euribor, + 1% and the Euribor is at 1%, you should then pay a 2% interest. However, if you have a mortgage with a ground clause at 3%, it would be calculated at that 3% rate and would not be reduced to 2%.

Ultimately, this ground clause sets the minimum interest rate to be paid ALWAYS, no matter what the Euribor is. This results in a limitation in the lowering of payment quotas for the client when interest rates are reduced, causing economic harm to them as they are forced to pay more money each month.

Are “Ground Clauses” legal?

According to the courts the mere inclusion of this clause in loans is not illegal, what is illegal is that it is included without adequately informing clients about the consequences. Therefore the courts have annulled this clause and consider it invalid.

Financial institutions have a legal obligation to explain all of the clauses to their clients so that they understand exactly what the loan agreement specifies.

Does the ground clause affect me?

In order to find out if this clause affects you it is advisable to ask for a professional to analyse the signed contract as the words “ground clause” do not usually appear in the text per se. The terms that usually appear are “minimum interest rate”, “limit the variability”, “limit the application of variable interest rate”, “the interest rate cannot be lower than X”, etc.

If you have not seen any reduction in your monthly payments since 2009, then this may well indicate the existence of this clause in your contract The Spanish Supreme Court judgment One of the most important decisions was made regarding this issue by the Supreme Court on May 9th 2013 when the ruling made was in favour of all those affected with mortgages from different banks like BBVA and Cajamar and the base or ground clause was annulled. However, the main point was that in their ruling they established retroactivity from the date of its pronouncement. That is to say that only the overcharged amounts paid from the date of the final sentence would be reimbursed. They justified this decision by referring to the serious damage that would be caused to the Spanish economy if the financial institutions were obliged to repay all of the overcharged amounts from the date of the signing of the loan contract.

The EU Court Judgment Now the victims are waiting for the EU Tribunal’s decision regarding the retroactivity of the cancellation of the ground clauses, as to whether reimbursement would take effect from 9 May 2013 or from the date of its inception.

On 13 July 2016 the Advocate General of the Court of Justice of the European Union, (CJEU)), Paolo Mengozzi already advised us in his report, that banks will not return all of the overpaid money, but only reimburse that which was overcharged from 2013, using the same argument; that it would endanger the country’s economy if the banks were forced to repay all of the money back.

Normally the decisions taken by the CJEU follow the line of the Opinion of the Advocate General, so we could assume that this would apply to this issue, and therefore, we have an idea of how far back we could claim the loss suffered by the aforementioned clauses.

Estepona Floral Art Club returns after the Summer break Estepona Floral Art Club are excited about their new programme which commences on September 20 when they are delighted to welcome back James Burnside and Alan Beatty.

The very talented pair, both NAFAS (National Association of Flower Arranging Societies) National demonstrators will show the audience how to create some

stunning floral designs. They had a very busy 2014, both were part of a team from Northern Ireland who won a Gold Medal at the Chelsea Flower Show and both were very involved with the World Flower Arranging Show which was held in Dublin, Alan in his capacity as a judge, which he says was a great experience, and both James and Alan were honored to give demonstrations at the Show.

James and Alan's demonstration, is on Tuesday September 20 and starts promptly at 3 pm at Agro Jardin, Cancelada and is called "Take 2". It promises to be a very exciting and entertaining afternoon so why not come along.

No knowledge of flowers or flower arranging is necessary to enjoy the afternoon. Everyone is welcome!

Alan and James will also be leading the first of the Clubs new Look, Learn and Hands on classes on Thursday September 22 at 11 am, again at Agro Jardin, and having taken 2 they will now be taking 5.

Castle Radio comes of age Castle Radio FM was the brainchild of Andrew Charles, who 5 years ago decided to set up and run a radio station from his home in Castillo de la Duquesa, for the local community. His determination and hard work set down the solid foundations to build a great and unique radio station, that we believe will go from strength to strength as we expand along the Costa del Sol and beyond.

In other words, Andrew gave birth to a beautiful baby, and those of you that know him, will know that you have to stretch your imagination in order to believe that could ever happen! But with Andy the saying “beauty comes from within” is very apt.

So it is now time for that Baby to go to school and become a commercial radio station and that’s where Terry Wiltshire and Gary Jackson come in, as they had the vision and business acumen to recognise those solid foundations and begin laying the building blocks for the very bright future ahead for Castle Radio FM. Gary Jackson Smith connected to radio back in the days of Radio Caroline, where his father Barrie, was instrumental in running and setting up the radio Caroline

Mr Terry Willshere’s background as an International financier, has seen him working on Worldwide projects which have included many in the Hotel and Entertainment Industry.

His love of radio also goes back to Radio Caroline.

Baby has now left home and moved to Duquesa Port, to be cared for, nurtured and placed into an environment where it may grow and flourish, otherwise known as our state-of-the-art radio studio.

Andy then introduced Terry and Gary to Sid Olivera, who is now the station manager and comes with a wealth of radio experience gained over the last 35 years, having worked for many of the radio stations along the coast, as well as B.F.B.S, B.B.C local radio and commercial radio in the UK. Sid passionately explains “It is a great pleasure to be working with such a talented and motivated team. The challenges of starting a new commercial radio station and training new presenters in the art of broadcasting, is just about as exciting as it gets and at the risk of sounding a little bit cheesy, it’s like giving back to an industry that has given me so much pleasure for 35

years and continues to do so”.

We believe at Castle radio FM, that it is for all these reasons, that the station will grow and prosper as we expand on the Costa del Sol and beyond, more and more listeners will benefit from being able to hear us and enjoy our unique live shows throughout the day with a mixture of talk and great music.

We plan to bring back radio with personality and character and whilst we know that you can’t “please all of the people all of the time” we are still going to give it a try!

Our vision is to have a radio station that is live and interactive with its listeners and local community, that is not only fun but also informative and professional in its broadcasting.

It is still early days, and our Baby needs to walk before it can run, but with your support it will take part in the next Olympics 100 metres event and win, providing of course that Usain Bolt decides to retire before then.

Los Baños Romanos en Cortesín de la Hedionda Si quieres hacer algo diferente, y ciertamente algo de lo que los niños podrán hablar con sus amigos, llévalos a darse un chapuzón en los Baños Romanos en Cortesín de la Hedionda, los baños romanos en el Río Manilva.

Todo empezó con los romanos Hacia finales del siglo I AC, o cerca del principio del siglo I DC, como prefieras, el suroeste de Andalucía, lo que es ahora el municipio de Manilva, era otro paraje de tierras en la provincia senatorial de Baetica, que estaba en el suroeste de España, la Hispania Romana. Baetica incluía lo que es ahora Andalucía

además de una pequeña parte de Extremadura. Una provincia senatorial era aquella sobre la cual el Senado de Roma tenía el derecho de nombrar un gobernador que se conocía como procónsul. Estas provincias normalmente eran pacíficas, en las afueras del Imperio, y tenía algunas, si las había, legiones residiendo.

La rica tierra agrícola en la franja costera de lo que ahora es el municipio de Manilva y los valles del río, como el del Río Manilva, estaban salpicados con granjas, el equivalente romano de las fincas, y existían algunas villas de estilo tradicional romano propiedad de los ricos terratenientes, algunos de origen romano, y algunos españoles o ibéricos, como se conocían entonces. Los

principales pueblos eran Castillo de la Duquesa, posiblemente llamado Saltum, y el abandonado asentamiento de Lacipo, que estaba cerca de Casares.

Una carretera adecuadamente pavimentada, la Vía I, recorría la costa y sí, como con todas las carreteras romanas, llevaba a Roma. Los caminos, algunos pavimentados y otros no, conectaban las fincas y villas del campo. Uno de esos caminos seguía el Río Manilva durante cuatro kilómetros a el Cortesín de la Hedionda.

Julius Caesar y una fuente caliente Durante miles de años, un manantial cálido de aguas sulfurosas que se originaba a gran profundidad había estado brotando desde la ladera de la colina, donde sus aguas crearon un canal durante cien metros o así antes de unirse al Río Manilva.

Dice la tradición de Julius Caesar se bañaba en las aguas entre los años 63 y 60 AC durante su periodo como procónsul de Baetica, y por tanto se curó de un problema de piel que sufría.

La cubierta de hormigón que ves ahora es una adición moderna construida para conservar la arquitectura romana original.

Esto puede verse aún formando los muros de los baños y los arcos entre las piscinas.

Cómo llegar

Sigue la carretera del Roman Oasis desde el supermercado Lidl en Sabinillas hasta que llegues al paso elevado de la autopista de peaje.

Puedes aparcar aquí o arriesgarte a seguir conduciendo en un camino accidentado que sigue el río. A unos 500 metros pasarás la Ermita de San Adolfo y llegarás a los Baños Romanos.

Hormigón romano .

Observa el mortero que une los ladrillos. Los romanos inventaron, o descubrieron, una mezcla de cemento que no solo era impermeable, sino que también fraguaba bajo el agua.

Solo en el año 2013 se descubrió cómo conseguían esto, en el laboratorio de la Universidad de Berkeley. Los romanos mezclaban cal y una ceniza volcánica encontrada cerca del pueblo de Pozzuoli, en Italia. El agua desencadena una reacción química a través de la cual la cal se hidrata y reacciona con la ceniza para formar un fuerte hidrato de calcio-aluminio-silicio.

Y era fuerte. Más de 2.000 años más tarde los baños siguen en uso y a las familias españolas les encanta ir los domingos. Hacen un picnic en las orillas del río y dejan a los más pequeños que jueguen en las cálidas aguas del manantial.

The Roman Baths at Cortesin de la Hedionda by Nick Nutter For something a little different, and certainly something the kids will be able to boast about with their friends, take them for a dip at the Roman Baths at Cortesin de la Hedionda, the Roman Baths on the Rio Manilva.

It Started with the Romans

Towards the end of the 1st Century BC, or close to the beginning of the 1st Century AD, whichever you prefer, south west Andalucia, what is now Manilva Municipality, was just another tract of land in the Senatorial province of Baetica which was in the south west of Spain, Roman Hispania. Baetica included what is now Andalucia plus a small part of Extremadura.

A Senatorial province was one to which the Senate in Rome had the right to appoint a governor who was known as a proconsul. These provinces were normally judged to

be peaceful, on the outskirts of the Empire, and had few if any legions in residence.

The rich farming land of the coastal strip of what is now the Municipality of Manilva and the river valleys such as that of the Rio Manilva, were dotted with farms, the Roman equivalent of fincas, and there were a few traditional style Roman villas owned by the wealthier landlords, some of Roman extraction, some Spanish, or Iberian as they were then known. The main towns were Castillo de la Duquesa, possibly named Saltum, and the now long abandoned settlement of Lacipo which was near Casares.

A properly paved road, the Via 1, ran along the coast, and yes, as with every Roman road, it led to Rome. Tracks, some paved, some not, connected the fincas and villas in the campo. One such track followed the Rio Manilva for 4 kilometres to the Cortesin de la Hedionda.

And Julius Caesar

For hundreds of thousands of years a warm sulphur laden spring that originated far down in the crust of the earth had been gushing its waters from the side of the hill where they carved a channel for a hundred metres or so before feeding into the Rio Manilva.

A Concrete Aside

Notice the mortar keeping the bricks joined together. The Romans invented, or discovered, a cement mix that was not only waterproof but also set underwater. It was only in the year 2013 that the secret of how this was accomplished was found at the laboratory of U.C. Berkeley. The Romans mixed lime and a volcanic ash found near the town of Pozzuoli in Italy. Water triggers a chemical reaction through which the lime is hydrated and reacts with the ash to form an exceptionally strong calcium-aluminium-silicate-hydrate.

Strong it was. Over 2000 years later the baths are still in use and are popular with Spanish families on Sundays. They picnic alongside the river and let their children splash around in the warm spring waters.

Tradition has it that Julius Caesar bathed in the waters somewhere between 63 and 60 BC during his period as Proconsul of Baetica and was subsequently cured of a skin complaint he suffered from. He ordered the track to be paved and had a Roman Bath erected over

the spring. The concrete canopy you now see is a modern addition built to preserve the original Roman architecture. This can still be seen forming the walls of the baths and the arches between the pools.

How to get there Follow the Roman Oasis Road from Lidls supermarket at Sabinillas until you reach the overpass for the toll road. You can park here or risk driving further on a rough track that continues to follow the river. About 500 metres further you will pass the Ermita de San Adolfo and arrive at the Roman Baths.

Help for English-speaking pupils attending local Primary Schools

Does your Junior-age child speak English as a First Language (or has been bilingual from early years) and does he/she attend a local Spanish school? If so, read on.

Going to a Spanish school can be challenging at first, but it’s remarkable how quickly most pupils progress academically and integrate socially, not to mention acquire Spanish in this most welcoming of countries.

However, there is one underlying area of concern for this group of children, which is the need to develop and maintain the same kind of English skills that are being taught in every classroom ‘back home’, in the UK, Ireland and other countries. Whilst children can generally speak confidently in English here, including about serious topics, it often comes as a surprise when we ask them to read, or write it down. The Spanish phonetically-based spelling system immediately intrudes, so that English concepts such as ‘magic e’ (hat-hate, cut-cute, petPete) and all the many spelling and pronunciation rules we have remain a total mystery.

In their everyday lives, these children may well be using a range of expressions and vocabulary below the norm for their age, being unfamiliar with all the richness and colour that our language has to offer. Indeed, creative writing, poetry and acting out drama

are major areas in which these students would be having less opportunity here, not to mention the practice of drafting and redrafting written work and working in pairs or groups.

The level of English taught in local schools is understandably different from that received back home as these have to pitch their lessons according to what local Spanish pupils can manage - acquiring and practising fairly basic vocabulary and structures for expressing it all of which can often leave English first language speakers in the class feeling bored and unfulfilled.

Bearing in mind the need to make up this shortfall and also prepare pupils for future needs, the ACADEMIA EUROPA in Estepona’s Calle Terraza is now offering one-hour lessons in the afternoon, using teaching materials and techniques modelled broadly on those provided across the Junior age-range in the UK. Lessons are offered twice or three times a week, at very reasonable rates. The teacher in charge of these courses for Juniors is Mr Ron Jones, former Head of Calpe Infants School in San Pedro, who has over 30 years’ classroom experience.

The best of 70s and 80s rock this weekend in Benalmadena Big M Promotions, who organise the “Hot Summer Nights” concerts, have their next event on Saturday 3rd September in the superb Benalmadena Auditorium (located in front of SELWO Marina) in conjunction with "Benalmádena Suena".

The line-up for this evening of great rock music starts with Terry Shaughnessy of the band “The Universal”.

Following Terry we have a band that is creating a stir along

the Costa del Sol – The Reinfected – a group dedicated to playing the greatest PUNK hits of the 70s as well as other New Wave and David Bowie songs. When they appeared in March at the Palacio de la Paz in Fuengirola they had a standing ovation, with many of the people attending commenting how good the music was, and how much fun the band were to watch.

Headlining the concert are the hugely popular Stereo 80. A group that Big M Promotions has been working with for over 8 years, and who have been support for the top Spanish bands Danza Invisible, Nacha Pop and La Union this year.

Loved by our concert regulars, they play songs from AC/DC, Guns ‘n Roses, Bon Jovi, Queen and many more.

The venue has FREE parking for over 1000 cars right next to it, and we will have 3 bars and a good selection of hot and cold snacks all night. Doors open at 8.30pm and the live music starts at 9.30pm. Los Amantes y La Lotería Los amantes, al atardecer, dejan en el aire brincos de olé, saltan de júbilo, absortos en interjecciones varias, bailan y ríen, al enterarse de que han sido afortunados con un premio en la lotería. “¡Pero esto no puede ser cierto! ¿Es verdad, Dios mío?”, se decían.

Les avisaron del bar de Pepe, y no se lo podían creer.

Pero si la fortuna les había sonreído, y ahora se convertían en personas con dinero (con mucho dinero, les tocó el gordo y el número de la serie especial), en menos de cinco meses desde el fortuito acontecimiento, debieron enfrentarse a terribles pruebas, que los llevó a ambos, a volver a sus antiguos deberes de pobre, teniendo que vestir con las mismas ropas de antes, comer la misma comida y llevar la carga de las pesadas mañanas obreras.

Viajes alrededor del mundo, buenos restaurantes, la gran casa que deseaban tener, un buen automóvil, y otras diversas cuestiones materiales, se quedaron en un sueño. Y todo porque a los amantes, se les ocurrió hacer caso a la virulenta idea de un amigo pipiolo que decía haber encontrado un banco que ofrecía los intereses más altos con las garantías más amplias para el capital ingresado. Así depositaron su dinero en esa entidad. Pero sucedió que a su quiebra, el banco, se hizo tan invisible a los ojos de sus clientes como a los de la justicia, sin que pudieran contar con una sola moneda de todas las ingresadas.

“Al menos, la mitad, podríamos haberla reservado”.

Los amantes, abnegados en la nueva situación, y sin perder la esperanza de que el tribunal determinara algún día la sentencia de devolver el capital ingresado en el banco (algo que solamente se lograría, y en parte, desde los fondos del estado, ante las entidades fantasmas propensas a desarrollar sus desfalcos con la eficacia y el apoyo de vaya usted a saber), tuvieron que volver al trabajo, tratando de deformar la realidad, imaginando que aquello que meses atrás les había ocurrido, no era cierto, y que fue un sueño de ambos, en la perspectiva de amantes necesitados de poder comprar una vivienda propia para vivir juntos.

Pero a los amantes les quedaba el amor como gran capital, y tuvieron la idea de depositarlo en el banco de la ilusión para incrementar con el paso del tiempo el capital de sus corazones. Sí, vivían de alquiler, pero eran felices llevando y trayendo besos desde el hogar al trabajo, siendo la envidia de muchos. El buen coche, la casa, el dinero, los viajes, nada era comparable a la felicidad que les proporcionaba el amor. “Cebolla y amor y todo lo demás sobra junto a ti”, le decía él a ella, consolándose, consolándola. Aunque los dos se prometieron no especular en lo que podría haber sido y no fue con el premio de lotería que el destino tuvo a bien proporcionarles, era difícil no pensar en esos hijos de mala madre que disfrutarían de su capital.

“Por qué tuvimos que buscar más, cuando teníamos ya tanto”, pensaban los dos al unísono.

La esperanza es acoger la luz de cada día sobre las manos, afanarse por una causa sin desilusión; y si alguna vez el proyecto se te hace angustioso, si te decepcionan compañeros, amigos, hermanos, perdónalos.

Aléjate de quien es incapaz de pensar dignamente, del que te ha utilizado para sus fines propios, y perdónalo también; aprieta una mano sobre la otra, combate la oscuridad y llena de nuevo tus manos, devuélvele a tu espíritu su confianza y su resplandor, y así podrás nuevamente trabajar por tus sueños.

Un espacio de viento Es domingo por la tarde.

Al árbol cae un rayo de hoja lánguida, y cae la hoja en luz y brillo de mañanas, el propósito de la vida sentada en el aire que te trae recuerdos de noviazgos y amigos, de futbolines y karaoke, de universos en folios en suplicios escolásticos.

No quise verme sino libre, prudente, y no acorralado por traductores del sistema.

Pero la juventud es proclive a influencias.

No soportaba ese doblaje de la conciencia, la sangre rota de los moralistas, que no me impedían sentir mi propio estremecimiento, sin que nadie me obligara a ser, sin que nadie manipulara mi mente y me dijera lo que tenía que pensar, en qué creer, cómo vivir noblemente, porque una cosa era mostrar lo bueno y otra llevarlo a cabo.

Sabistock- End of Summer Bash

Sabistock - End of Summer Bash Sabinillas once again stages its annual End of Summer Bash on Saturday 10 September from 1 pm.

Organised by Tony Gates from Fathoms Bar, in collaboration with Manilva Town Hall’s Foreign Residents Department and the Duquesa Charitable Society of St George, this year’s Sabistock features 11 hours of musical entertainment from some of the Costa del Sol’s best artists and bands, all of which generously give their time and talent for free.

This year the event is raising money, through the Saint George Charity, to fund a special excursion for the local handicapped association, LUISANA.

Citizens Advice Bureau Spain weekly surgery The Duquesa Charitable Society of St George is hosting a weekly surgery by Citizens Advice Bureau Spain every Wednesday morning from 10.30 am to 1 pm.

The surgery will be held at the St George Charity’s new shop in Calle Aurora de Albornoz, Punta Almina, Sabinillas, and is part of the Charity’s community support programme.

If you would like to see one of CAB Spain’s advisers then pop along to the shop on Wednesday morning, although it is advisable to book an appointment as it can sometimes be busy.

All consultations are free but CAB Spain is funded by donations, so if you feel that their advice has been valuable then please make a donation in the tin provided.

¡El verdadero desafío de aptitud!

Soy muy creyente en ponerme a prueba yo misma, probar cosas nuevas, la búsqueda de nuevos desafíos.

Pues bien, este fin de semana más de 400 personas de

muchas edades de 6 a 63 años desafiaron sus límites.

Imagínate, 8km de todo tipo de terreno, colinas, grava, cauces de agua de 1m de profundidad, arena y carretera, esto junto con 45 obstáculos increíbles, no es para los débiles!

Durante muchos años el agua ha sido mi némesis, no sé nadar y estoy seriamente fuera de mi zona de confort en agua por encima de mis tobillos. Así que no sólo reté a 16 de mis clientes para que entrasen en la carrera, pero yo entré sabiendo que no sólo iba a ser algo muy caluroso y sucio, pero que estaría a veces hasta totalmente sumergida en el agua!

La carrera se divide en 4 categorías, los atletas de élite, individuos aficionados y grupos mixtos (hombres + mujeres) y niños. Logré convencer a 16 clientes a entrar en 4 equipos. Mi equipo tenía una edad combinada de 192 años.

Al principio esperando en la línea de salida a que comenzase la carrera fue absolutamente fantástico, realmente había un zumbido en el aire, y se podía sentir la energía y la adrenalina de todos los participantes.

Atravesamos la línea de salida con la música de Rocky sonando de los altavoces, más de 30 equipos de 4 personas calentando con una carrera de 2 km, pero a medida que nos acercamos al primer obstáculo cada uno nos dimos cuenta de repente del verdadero reto por delante!

Había contenedores llenos de agua y barro de los que tuvimos que entrar y salir, 2 cuerdas para subir, 2 camiones militares que sobrepasar, barras de 3 metros por los que pasar o caer en 1 metro de barro debajo.

Había depresiones excavadas de un metro en el suelo llenas de agua y cubiertas de plástico negro por los que arrastrarse, pero para mí lo peor fue tener que caminar más de 1km por el río sumergida en agua hasta la barbilla.

El río estaba lleno de ramas y árboles y todo tipo de naturaleza, el no saber lo que había en el agua añadió al miedo, estar en un equipo fue una ventaja enorme, sin tener a un miembro de mi equipo cogiéndome de la mano y manteniéndome en calma no estoy segura de que habría continuado.

Entonces, justo cuando crees que lo peor ha pasado, te encuentras en la parte inferior de lo que parece una enorme colina sin fin, o en mi mente, una enorme montaña. A estas horas todos estamos sintiendo el cansancio en el cuerpo, con 33 grados de calor húmedo y pensamientos negativos comenzando a aparecer en mi mente, cuando empecé a correr empecé a dudar en mí misma, si mi rodilla lesionada resistiría, si estaba lo suficientemente en forma, ¿Tengo bastante energía para seguir? Pero, una vez más, tener amigos a mi alrededor realmente me ayudó a resistir.

La carrera se prolongó durante 8km, ¡parecía eterno!

A medida que nos acercamos a la ciudad, podíamos oír a la gente animándonos, los espectadores comprendiendo lo que necesitábamos de ellos, por lo que encontramos una nueva oleada de energía, entonces dimos la vuelta a la esquina y nos dimos cuenta de que teníamos que repetir los primeros 20 obstáculos de nuevo.

¡Entrena mejor, no más!

Fitness Truly Challenged!

I’m a great believer in testing yourself, trying new things, finding new limits. Well, this weekend over 400 people across many ages from 6 years to 63 years tested themselves to one heck of a challenge.

Just imagine, 8k of all terrain running, hills, gravel, 4ft of water river beds, sand and roads, now add to that over 45 UNBELIEVABLE obstacles, not for the faint hearted!

For many years water has been my nemesis, I can’t swim and I am seriously out of my comfort zone in any water above my ankles. So not only did I challenge 16 of my clients to enter the race, but I entered myself knowing full well I was not only going to get very hot and dirty but fully immersed in water too!

The race was split into 4 categories, elite athletes, single person amateur and mixed groups (men+woman) and kids.

I managed to persuade 16 clients to enter as 4 teams. My team had a combined aged of 192 years.

Just standing on the side line waiting for your race to begin was absolutely fantastic, there was a real buzz in the atmosphere, and you could feel the energy and adrenalin of all the participants.

To the sound of Rocky blasting from the speakers we passed the start line, over 30 teams of 4 people all heading for 2 k warm up run, but as we approached the first obstacle everyone suddenly became aware of the true challenge ahead!

There were skips full of water and mud which we had to climb in and out of, 2 metre ropes to climb up, 2 meter army trucks to climb in, 3 meter monkey bars to climb across or drop into 1 metre of mud below you.

There were 1 metre troughs dug out of the ground full of water and covered in blackout plastic which you had to crawl

through, but for me the absolute worse was having to walk over 1k in chin high river water.

The river was full of sticks and trees and all sorts of nature, not knowing what was in the water added to the fear, being in a team was a massive advantage, but without my team member holding my hand and keeping me calm I’m not sure I would have continued.

Then just as you think the worst is over, you find yourself at the bottom of what seems like a never ending enormous hill, or in my head a massive mountain. By now everyone’s body is tired, it was 33 degrees of humid heat and my head started to think negative thoughts, as I started to run I began to doubt myself, doubting whether my injured knee would hold out, was I fit enough, did I have enough energy? But, yet again having friends around you really helped you dig deep.

The run went on for 8k, it seemed to go on for ever!

As we approached the town, we could hear people cheering us, the spectators understanding your need of them, so you found a new surge of energy, then we turned the corner and realised that we had to repeat the first 20 obstacles all over again.

It was a true challenge, doubting yourself, pushing yourself and finding new trust in your friends. Crossing that finish line was a huge relief, you feel so glad it all over but the glow in side knowing that you finished is worth every minute.

All of my teams finished, in fact one of them came 3rd and won a trophy, I felt immensely proud, proud as a trainer, proud of myself and very proud of my son who came first in the kids race. In fact a massive well done to all that entered and completed the race.

It was a great day, I would encourage anyone to find a a

new challenge, have a go a doing something that as always interested you , stop finding excuses not do something because the feeling afterwards when you can say to yourself I DID IT! AMAZING!

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal Tunnel is a diagnosis that is becoming more and more common. But what is the best solution?

What is the Carpal Tunnel?

The Carpal Tunnel is located on the palm side of your wrist. It is a tunnel to protect the median nerve which controls index and middle finger function.

If there is any kind of blockage, pressure or inflammation in this tunnel it puts pressure on the nerve, creating Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Symptoms: •

a vague aching in your wrist that can extend to your hand or forearm.

Unsuccessful surgery Typically patients go to a doctor complaining of some or all of the above symptoms, they have an ultrasound or similar investigation and then have carpal tunnel surgery.

They are then frustrated because the symptoms don’t go away.

Thorough assessment The symptoms of Carpal Tunnel are symptoms of trauma to the Median Nerve. This nerve runs from the neck, through the shoulder, upper arm, elbow and forearm, through the Carpal Tunnel in the wrist and into the hand.

This means that compromise at any point can cause these symptoms.

•

Tingling or numbness in your fingers or hand, often worse on waking.

So the entire route of the Median Nerve must be examined to determine the actual location of the pressure on the nerve. Not just the final junction at the wrist.

•

Pain from your wrist up your arm to your shoulder or down into your palm or fingers, especially after forceful or repetitive use.

If you have pain in both wrists it is CRITICAL to get a proper assessment of the neck.

•

Weakness in your hands and a tendency to drop objects.

A nervous condition

•

A loss of feeling in some fingers.

Carpal Tunnel is also one of the conditions that commonly triggers Central Sensitisation of the nervous system.

This occurs when the ongoing pain starts to make your entire nervous system super sensitive. So any small thing, which you wouldn’t normally notice, trips you over the edge into BIG pain.

And painkillers can’t treat it.

And operations often make it worse.

And it’s often ignored – or dismissed as you being a “hypochondriac”.

Nerve issues can quickly lead to central sensitisation.

And once this happens they often don’t respond well to treatment or surgery.

Is my computer giving me Carpal Tunnel?

Honestly, probably not, but it might be giving you Carpal Tunnel like symptoms. I call this “iPain”. The hunched over, crouching posture that we all use on laptops, tablets and smartphones can cause all kinds of neck and shoulder issues. Which cause similar symptoms as they place pressure on the nerves.

Justin Rose wins gold in Olympic golf Golf returned to Rio this summer as an Olympic sport for the first time since 1904. (It was an even longer gap for the women’s golf, which was last in the Olympics in 1900.) The return was surrounded by controversy about whether golf belongs in the Olympics, and the

situation wasn’t helped when a large number of top golfers withdrew from play. Men’s and women’s golf will be back in Tokyo in 2020, but its future at the Olympics beyond is uncertain. That being said it was still worth waiting all 112 years to witness the action.

The fears and frustration following big-name defections melted away on the final day of the men’s golf, when Justin Rose of Great Britain birdied the final hole to hold off Sweden’s Henrik Stenson and win a gold medal. The 2013 US Open champion beat the 2016 winner of the Open Championship for the historic Olympic victory.

Matt Kuchar of the US captured the bronze medal, a nice win for America. After he closed with a brilliant final round 63 and took the bronze medal, Kuchar told Golf Channel, “I’ve never been so excited to finish top-three in my life.”

The intention was never to suggest that Olympic gold is more prized than a Masters green jacket, the silver claret jug of The Open or the trophy of any other men’s or women’s Major championship.

The point was not to devalue the Majors, but rather to enhance the game. Having golf on the largest, most-watched stage in all of sports can only be a good thing.

The women’s golf was as big a hit as the men’s. Nine countries were represented in the final top 10, with Amy Yang joining Inbee Park for Korea. Also in the top 10 were New Zealand (Lydia Ko),

China (Shanshan Feng), Japan (Haru Nomura), US (Stacy Lewis), Canada (Brooke Henderson), Australia (Minjee Lee), Great Britain (Charley Hull) and Norway (Suzann Pettersen).

The days of Americans dominating golf are over, and that’s not a bad thing. In fact, it’s a very good thing, both for competitive excitement and for the financial health of the game. It’s not that the Americans have gotten worse; the rest of the world has gotten better.

Sure, there are some things to second-guess about Olympic golf, in terms of format especially, but there is no reason to second-guess the return of golf. Personally, I’d have rather seen best-ball, match play instead of 72 holes of stroke play. I have two reasons for this.

First, we see 72 holes of stroke play virtually every week on a multitude of pro tours around the world. Having something different would have been a good thing.

Second, best-ball match play would increase the number of top players in the event and bring the national element into the competition.

Instead of 60 players each for the men and women we could have had 64 teams for each—128 players in each competition. That means

players like Rolex Women’s World Rankings No. 10 Ha Na Jang of South Korea would not have been left out simply because her country had already reached the maximum four players. Up the maximum per country to eight.

As for the national element, imagine a best-ball match with Bubba Watson and Rickie Fowler, for example, against the Aussie duo of Adam Scott and Jason Day, both of whom chose to sit out this Olympics. Or Lexi Thompson and Stacy Lewis going against Inbee Park (who won the women’s gold in a fantastic, dominant performance) and Sei Young Kim of South Korea.

With everything said and done I think that golf has proven to the world that it does have a place in the Olympic programme for many years to come.

Anticipation builds for the Costa del Sol Ladies Spanish Open Aloha Golf Club will host the prestigious Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España Femenino for the first time in its history from September 22-25.

The tournament will be played in Marbella, and is organised by the Real Federación Española de Golf with the sponsorship of Turismo de Andalucía, Turismo Costa del Sol and Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental.

Esta es una enfermedad de causa genética que se caracteriza por un retraso en el desarrollo, una capacidad lingüística reducida o nula, escasa receptividad comunicativa, escasa coordinación motriz, con problemas de equilibrio y movimiento, ataxia, estado aparente de alegría permanente, con risas y sonrisas en todo momento.

Alandarun2016 es un proyecto creado por que consiste en recorrer la costa malagueña desde el cartel provincia de Málaga, en Maro, hasta el cartel provincia de Cádiz, en el término municipal de Manilva.

Desde la organización se pusieron en contacto con la edil de Medio Ambiente y Playas, María Muñoz, y en nombre del Ayuntamiento de Manilva se tendió la mano a esta buena causa dando difusión al evento solidario.

Además de publicitarlo, la aportación municipal será entregar en la meta bebida energética y piezas de frutas para la expedición.

Club de Netball de Manilva: cada El nuevo proyecto de la Unión Manilva será vez más fuerte presentado el viernes 9 de septiembre

El Club de Netball de Manilva se creó hace seis años. Son un grupo de mujeres de la localidad a las que les encanta jugar a este divertido juego. Animan a inscribirse a aquellas que hayan jugado antes e incluso a las que les gustaría aprender. Algunas de las chicas hablan español, así que, si hay españolas u otras nacionalidades que desean probar el netball, el equipo entrena los martes desde las 18:30 a las 20:00 en el Centro deportivo Las Viñas, Manilva, en verano y en el Centro deportivo de Sabinillas en invierno. El coste es de 3€ para adultos y 2€ para estudiantes. La primera sesión es

gratuita para poder ir a probar.

La temporada abarca desde finales de enero hasta finales de mayo y desde mediados de septiembre hasta principios de diciembre.

Casi mensualmente hay un torneo que se juega aquí, en Manilva, o en el Colegio Laude, en San Pedro, lo que les proporciona práctica de partido.

No te preocupes si no has jugado desde hace tiempo; al final se trata de conocer gente nueva y divertirse.

Manilva Netball Club go from strength to strength

El viernes día 9 de septiembre tendrá lugar el acto de presentación de los doce equipos de la Unión Manilva Club de Fútbol de cara a la temporada 2016/17.

Según informaba el presidente de la entidad, Antonio Miguel Barragán, la presentación tendrá lugar en el campo de Las Viñas a partir de las ocho y media de la tarde.

Con tres conjuntos más que en el pasado ejercicio, ese día serán presentados los entrenadores, así como todos los jugadores que esta temporada llevarán el nombre del municipio por la provincia malagueña.

De cara a esta campaña el Manilva apuesta de nuevo por un proyecto basado en la cantera, que estará formada por doce equipos; un baby, tres prebenjamines, tres benjamines, tres alevines, además de los conjuntos infantil, cadete y juvenil.

Desde el Club manilveño y la delegación de Deportes, que dirige el edil Agustín Vargas, se anima a todos los familiares y aficionados del Manilva a acompañar a los jóvenes deportistas en este día tan especial para todos ellos.

Tras la presentación, la primera cita la tendremos el sábado día 10 de septiembre con el “II Torneo de Pretemporada de la U. Manilva”.

En este trofeo veraniego participarán ocho clubes de las provincias de Cádiz y Málaga

en las categorías prebenjamín, benjamín y alevín.

Los equipos participantes serán el Taraguilla, Costa Unida, Atlético Zabal, Polideportivo Mijas Las Lagunas, Vázquez Cultural, UD Tesorillo, Balón Linense y Unión Manilva, como anfitrión del torneo.

Las fases de grupo se disputarán

desde las nueve de la mañana y a partir de las cinco de la tarde se desarrollarán las fases finales o eliminatorias.

De esta manera, el campo de Las Viñas vivirá una jornada futbolera en la que los diferentes equipos participantes podrán ponerse a punto ante el inminente inicio de la temporada 2016/17.

The Manilva Football Club’s new project to be announced September 9

Manilva Netball Team with Manilva Town Hall's Councillor for Foreign Residents, Dean Shelton Manilva Netball Club have now been going for 6 years. They are a group of local ladies that love playing this wonderful game, and would welcome into the club anyone who has played before, or would like to learn to play. They have Spanish speakers, so if there are Spanish or other nationalities that would like to give netball a try, join them at training on Tuesday nights from 6.30 - 8 pm, at Las Viñas Sports Centre, Manilva in the summer, and Sabinillas Sports Centre, in winter.

The cost is €3 for adults and €2 for

students. The first session free so go and give them a try.

The season is from the end of January until the end of May, then from mid September until early December.

On an almost monthly basis there is a tournament, either played here in Manilva, or at Laude School, in San Pedro which gives them match practice.

Don't worry if you haven't played for years, it's all about meeting new people and having fun.

On Friday 9 September a presentation of the twelve teams in the Manilva Union Football Club will take place ahead of the 2016/17 season.

President of the organisation Antonio Miguel Barragan informs us that the presentation will take place in the Las Viñas field from eight thirty pm.

With three more teams than last year, the coaches and all the players representing the municipality in the province of Malaga this season will be introduced.

Manilva has once again placed it’s bet on a project based on the quarry, which will consist of twelve teams; one infant, three under 10’s, three under 13’s, three under 15’s and also, one under 16’s, 18’s and 21’s.

After the presentation, we will have the first date of the season on Saturday 10 September with

the "II Preseason Tournament U. Manilva".

Eight clubs from the provinces of Cadiz and Malaga participate in this summer tournament in the categories from 8 to 15 years of age.

Las carreras GC32 llegan a Sotogrande

El IV Triatlón San Roque ya tiene fecha: 25 de septiembre

El GC32 Racing Tour 2016 llega a Sotogrande por primera vez para un evento de cuatro días que se celebrará del 22 al 25 de septiembre del 2016. Ésta es la cuarta de las cinco paradas del circuito europeo de catamaranes de alta velocidad.

Se espera que una flota de más de diez catamaranes compita en la GC32 Sotogrande Cup, incluyendo una combinación de tripulaciones profesionales y propietarias. Entre las anteriores está NORAUTO, con el ganador de la Volvo Ocean Race Franck Cammas desde Francia como skipper y GUNVOR Sailing,

El próximo 25 de septiembre se celebrará el IV Triatlón San Roque, que incluirá una fiesta deportiva en la playa el sábado 24. La Delegación Municipal de Deportes ya está preparando esta prueba atlética de resistencia, que combina las disciplinas de natación, ciclismo y carrera a pie, y que tanto éxito tuvo en las tres pasadas ediciones.

Así, el sábado 24 de septiembre a las 17.00 horas se celebrará en la playa de Torreguadiaro un Acuatlón Infantil, al que seguirán una Fiesta DXT-playa y la recepción oficial. La jornada del domingo 25, cuando se celebre la prueba deportiva en sí, comenzará a las 8.00 horas con la entrega de dorsales. A las 10.30 saldrán los deportistas masculinos y a las 10.40 las féminas, para procederse a las 12.30 horas a la entrega de premios.

Las inscripciones se pueden realizar hasta el 22 de septiembre, a un precio de 20 euros para deportistas federados y de 25 para los no federados. El número

tripulada por un equipo que incluye al medallista de los juegos de Londres 2012 Nathan Outteridge de Australia y el dos veces medalla de oro británico Iain Percy.

Entre las tripulaciones propietarias, está ARGO de Estados Unidos, dirigida por el dos veces campeón de la Melges 32 Jason Carroll.

Este evento continúa un apasionante año de navegación en Sotogrande con la celebración del RC44 y los Campeonatos del Mundo J/80 en Sotogrande en primavera y verano.

A 10+ strong fleet is expected to compete at the GC32 Sotogrande Cup, including a mix of fully professional and owner-driver crews. Among the former is NORAUTO,skippered

by Volvo Ocean Race winner Franck Cammas from France and

GUNVOR Sailing campaigned by a squad including London 2012 49er gold medallist, Nathan Outteridge from Australia and British two-time Olympic gold medallist, Iain Percy.

Among the owner-driver crews is ARGO from the USA, skippered by two-time Melges 32 World Champion, Jason Carroll.

This event follows an exciting year of sailing in Sotogrande with the hosting of both the RC44 and J/80 World Championships at Sotogrande, in the spring and summer.

September 25 is the date set for the IV San Roque Triathlon, to be held on the beach at Sotogrande.

The triathlon consists of a 750 metre swim; followed by 20 km cycle race; and concluding with a 5 km run.

The action kicks off on Saturday 24 with sports festival beginning at 5 pm with a children’s Aquathlon, followed by the DXT Beach Party and the official reception. On Sunday at 8 am the competitors will collect their race numbers after which the men will set off at 10.30 am followed by the women ten minutes later at 10.40 am. There will be a prizegiving ceremony at around 12.30 pm.

Entry is 20 euros for federation members and 25 for non-members and is limited to 250 participants.
