CHINESE JADE Jade has a history in China of at least four thousand years, having moved from the use of decoration on to rites of worship and burial. Although other materials like gold, silver, and bronze were also used, none of these have ever exceeded the spiritual position that jade has acquired in peoples’ minds. It is associated with merit, morality, grace, and dignity. The “Six Ritual Jades” originating in pre-history were the bi (a flat disk with a hole in its center), the cong, the huang (a flat, half-ring pendant), the hu, the flat, bladelike gui, and the zhang. The original names, value, and functions of these objects have invited much speculation. The Zhou Li, itself probably compiled in the Han Dynasty, ascribes the circular bi as representing the heavens, the cong as representing the earth, the gui the east, the zhang the south, the hu the west, and the huang the north. Although over two millennia old, these names and symbolism were given to these objects by much later writers who interpreted the objects in a way that reflected their own understanding of the cosmos. The original use of the “Six Ritual Jades” became lost, with such jades becoming status symbols, with utility and religious significance forgotten. The objects came to represent the status of the holder due to the expense and authority needed to command the resources and labour in creating the object. The Chinese used the generic term yu to cover a variety of related jade-like stones, including nephrite, bowenite (a type of serpentine), and jadeite. •

• •

Jadeite was believed to be a precious and hard jade with healing qualities for the human stomach and kidneys, as early as the 16th Century. Since it was brought into China during the early Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911), it had been doted on greatly. It contains an iron component which appears red, chromium that appears green, and many other colored types. Known as the ‘king of jade’, it is usually a more expensive type. Nephrite jade’s robustness is due to the fact it contains tremolite. It also can be divided into several sub-classifications according to color: white, grey, green, topaz, and black jade. Serpentine jade, or Xiu yu in Chinese, is mainly from Xiuyan County in Liaoning Province. Made of many different ingredients, it takes on various appearances: white, yellow, light yellow, pink, green, dark green, light green and so on. This type is usually colored in various shades of green. Usually serpentine jade is semi-transparent or even opaque like wax.

Jade occupies a special place in Chinese artistic culture as valued as gold is in the West but hallowed with even loftier moral connotations. The Shuowenjiezi (“Discussions of Writings and Explanations of Character”) of Xu Shen defined jade as follows:

“A stone that is beautiful, it has five virtues. There is warmth in its lustre and brilliance; this is its quality of kindness; its soft interior may be viewed from the outside revealing [the goodness] within; this is its quality of rectitude; its tone is tranquil and high and carries far and wide; this is its quality of wisdom; it may be broken but cannot be twisted; this is its quality of bravery; its sharp edges are not intended for violence; this is its quality of purity.”

BAMBOO IN CHINESE CULTURE China is known as the Kingdom of Bamboo because bamboo is more prevalent there than anywhere else in the world, with more than four hundred species growing in China. The areas that produce the most bamboo are south of the Changjiang (Yangtze) River. Tall and graceful with luxuriant foliage, bamboo is an ideal plant for household gardens and parks. It tolerates the heat of summer and cold of winter, and it is able to grow in unfertile land regenerating after being cut. As early as the Shang Dynasty (16th-17th Centuries B.C.) the Chinese used bamboo for making household items and weapons. Prior to the invention of paper, strips of bamboo were used for writing because it was resistant to corrosion and more affordable than silk. In the Han Dynasty (206 B.C. to 221 A.D.) bamboo was used for papermaking and it is still a valuable raw material for papermaking today. People wrote with brushes on xuan paper made from young bamboo 1600 years ago, and it is still popular for Chinese calligraphy and paintings today. Bamboo’s resistance to stretching and its ability to support weight are at least double those of other varieties of wood, so it is used widely as building material and for furnishings and household items today, as well as for musical instruments such as the sheng (a reed instrument), the di and the xiao (flutes). The leaves, juice, and root of bamboo are also used in Chinese medicines. Bamboo shoots can be eaten and contain vitamins, sugar, fat, and protein. The mystique and beauty of the bamboo forest is one of the most common themes in Chinese art. Bamboo is viewed as a symbol of traditional Chinese values. It is an example of the harmony between nature and human beings. People think its deep root denotes resoluteness, its tall, straight stem represents honor, the hollow interior modesty, and its clean and Spartan exterior exemplifies chastity. Ancient Chinese scholars held bamboo in profound esteem.

CHINESE CERAMICS Chinese ceramic ware is an art form that has been developing since the Neolithic period. There are two primary categories of Chinese ceramics, low-temperature-fired pottery (táo) and high-temperature-fired porcelain (cí). The history of Chinese ceramics began some eight thousand years ago with the crafting of hand-molded earthenware vessels. Soon after, in the late Neolithic period, the potter’s wheel was invented facilitating the production of more uniform vessels. The sophistication of these early Chinese potters is best exemplified by the legion of terracotta warriors found in the tomb of the First Qin Emperor. Over the following centuries innumerable new ceramic technologies and styles were developed. One of the most famous is the three-colored (sancai) ware of the Tang Dynasty. They were made not only in such traditional forms as bowls and vases, but also in the more exotic guises of camels and Central Asian travelers, testifying to the cultural influence of the Silk Road. Another type of ware to gain the favor of the Tang court was the celadon (qingci). These have a subtle bluish-green glaze and are characterized by their simple and elegant shapes. They were so popular that production continued at various kiln centers throughout China well into the succeeding dynasties, and were shipped to Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia, and as far as Egypt. During the Song Dynasty, the firing of porcelain was widespread. Famous porcelain wares were named after the locations at which they were produced. Various kilns in different places came to establish their own independent styles of forms and glazes. Porcelain of this period featured plain but elegant glazes as well as simple and archaic forms. Many of the decorative patterns were inspired by daily life and nature. Commonly used French terms for ‘families’, or palettes of enamel colors used on Chinese porcelain. Famille jaune, noire, rose, and verte are terms used to classify Chinese porcelain by the dominant element in its color palette. Blue and white (qinghua) porcelain was first mass produced under the Yuan Dynasty. Baked at a high temperature, porcelain is characterized by the purity of its kaolin clay body. Potters of the subsequent Ming Dynasty perfected these blue and white wares so that they soon came to represent the virtuosity of the Chinese potter. Jingdezhe, in Jiangxi Province, became the center of a porcelain industry that not only produced vast quantities of imperial wares, but also exported products as far afield as Turkey. While styles of decorative motif and vessel shape changed with the ascension to the throne of each new Ming emperor, the quality of Ming blue and whites are indisputably superior to that of any other era. During the late Ming to early Qing Dynasty porcelain was enriched with the innovation of five-colored wares. Applying a variety of over-glaze pigments to decorative schemes of flower, landscape, and figurative scenes, these wares have gained great fame in the West. In the 18th Century, borrowing from techniques in the decoration of metalware, enamel was painted on porcelain to create vivid colors and stunning patterns, known as painted-enamel (yangcai). The quality of Chinese porcelain began to decline from the end of the Qing Dynasty as political instability took its inevitable toll on the arts. However, the production of porcelain is being revived as Chinese culture gains greater recognition both at home and abroad. In addition to modern interpretations, numerous kiln centers have been established to reproduce the more traditional styles.

CHINESE CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL The art of cloisonné was commonly used in most of medieval Europe, England, the Middle East, and Near East and found its way to China during the 14th and 15th Centuries. The earliest Chinese cloisonné seems to be from the reign of the Ming Xuande emperor (1426-1435), however it was recorded during the Yuan Dynasty and it is believed that the technique may have been introduced via Yunnan which was under the rule of the Mongols who received an influx of Islamic people. Very few cloisonné objects have been dated to the Yongle reign (1402-1424) of the early Ming Dynasty based on style. The technique itself was created by pasting or soldering cloisons (French for partitions) of copper or bronze wire, either bent or hammered, into the desired design on a metal body and applying glass paste or enamel to the confined areas of the design. The piece was fired at a relatively low temperature, but enamels commonly shrink when fired so the process was repeated several times to complete the design. Then the surface was rubbed to expose the cloisons. Enamels were left unpolished but metal surfaces were often gilded. Colors were limited and turquoise blue was used predominantly, mainly as a background. Enamel colors evolved over time and more shades became available and new techniques appeared creating a speckle effect such as “Ming pink”, created with red and white enamel. In 1388 in his influential Guide to the Study of Antiquities (Gegu Yaolun) Cao Zhao dismissed cloisonné as being suitable only for a lady’s chambers, but by the period of the emperor Xuande, this ware was greatly prized at court. Extremely large items were commissioned by the emperors for gifts to the Buddhist temples and their altars, and large pieces decorated the Chinese palaces. An Imperial workshop was dedicated to the production of cloisonné on the palace grounds in Beijing. Most experts agree that the late 18th Century was the culmination of Chinese cloisonné with its exceptional renditions.

BIDDER INFORMATION Advice to Bidders 1. Carefully read the Conditions of Sale. 2. Pre-sale estimates are provided by the auctioneers for the convenience of our customers. They are not meant to be taken as a guide to the value of an item, but as a guide to its expected selling price. Estimates are prepared well in advance of a sale and are subject to revision. 3. Carefully examine any item that you might consider bidding on for any variation from the catalog description. If you are unfamiliar with auction procedure or terminology, or if you would like clarification of a catalog description, please ask for assistance from our staff. 4. If you wish to leave an Absentee Bid or request a Telephone Bid, please review the Absentee/Telephone Bid Procedure and complete the Bid Form. 5. A buyer’s premium will be added to the hammer price of all property sold, to be paid as part of the purchase price. The buyer’s premium is 20% of the final bid price up to and including $500,000, and 10% of the final bid price over $500,000. 6. Online bidding is available through Eldred’s Live! at www.eldreds.com, powered by Invaluable.com, with a 25% buyer’s premium. Prospective bidders must register and be approved prior to placing bids or bidding live online. 7. Eldred’s reserves the right to refuse to issue, or to revoke, bidding credentials, or to reject any bid, if deemed necessary and proper in its sole discretion, for the conduct of the auction process, and to insure fairness to consignors and other bidders.

The property listed in this catalog will be offered and sold subject to the terms and conditions listed in this catalog.

CONDITIONS OF SALE 1. CORRECTNESS OF DESCRIPTION: Robert C. Eldred Co., Inc. (hereinafter referred to as Eldred’s) has exercised reasonable care to catalog and describe correctly the property to be sold, but neither Eldred’s nor its consignors warrant the correctness of description, attribution, authenticity, or condition of said property. No statements shall be deemed such a warranty or representation or an assumption of liability with respect thereto, but are to be construed as opinions only. Bidders are encouraged to personally examine all property to be sold prior to the beginning of the auction. 2. Unless otherwise announced by the auctioneer at the time of sale, all bids are per lot as numbered. 3. Eldred’s reserves the right to withdraw any property before the sale. 4. DETERMINATION OF HIGHEST BIDDER: The highest bidder accepted by the auctioneer shall be the buyer. In the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer may determine who is the successful bidder or the auctioneer may re-offer the article in dispute and his decision shall be final. 5. REJECTION OF BIDS: The auctioneer reserves the right to reject any nominal raise or any bid or raise which, in his opinion, is not commensurate with the value of the article being offered. At his discretion, he may also reject any nominal raise or any bid that he may determine as having a detrimental effect on the item in question or the sale as a whole. Eldred’s may refuse to issue bidding privileges to any person not in good credit standing with Eldred’s, or to any person who is deemed by Eldred’s in its sole discretion, to be disruptive of or harmful to established auction practices, either before or after the acceptance of bids or the fall of the hammer. 6. TITLE: Except as herein otherwise provided, title will pass to the highest bidder as determined by the auctioneer, and the property is thereafter at the purchaser’s sole risk and responsibility. 7. PAYMENT: On title passing to the highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer, and subject to all the conditions set forth herein, such bidder will thereupon pay the full purchase price. Payment in full is due at the time of sale. Any bills not paid in full within 25 days of the date of the sale will accrue interest at a rate of 1.5% per month. In addition, the purchaser may be subject to one or more of the following actions: a) Any and all legal remedies available to Eldred’s and its consignors by law including without limitation the right to hold the purchaser liable for the total purchase price; b) Immediate cancellation of the sale, with Eldred’s retaining as liquidated damages all payments made by the purchaser; c) Resale of the property at public auction, wherein the original purchaser shall be liable for any deficiency, costs, and Eldred’s commission on both sales. At Eldred’s option, payment will not be deemed to have been made in full until Eldred’s has collected funds represented by checks, or in the case of bank or cashier’s checks, their authenticity has been confirmed. A buyer’s premium will be added to the hammer price to be paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price. 8. ORDER BIDS: Subject to these Conditions of Sale and to such terms and conditions as it may prescribe, but at no charge to the customer, Eldred’s will undertake to execute all order bids submitted to it by a customer who has established credit with said company. Requests for such bidding must be given in writing with such clearness as to leave no room for misunderstanding as to the amount to be bid and must state the catalog number and the name or title of the article to be bid on. Telephone bids must be confirmed in writing or by cable. All bids are kept in strict confidence. In the event of identical bids, the earliest

received by Eldred’s will take precedence. Eldred’s shall not be held responsible for errors or failure to execute bids. A deposit of 10% of the total amount bid is required. TELEPHONE BIDS: While the sale is in progress, bidding by telephone may be allowed by the auctioneer at his discretion. A deposit of 10% of the anticipated top bid is required. Eldred’s shall not be held responsible for any failure to properly execute such a bid whether it be due to equipment failure, loss of connection, or failure to hear or understand the bidder’s directions. Any advice or opinions provided by Eldred’s or its employees are given strictly as a courtesy and are not a warrant of condition, attribution, authenticity, or description of said property. All bidding by telephone is solely at the risk of the bidder. 9. CONDITION: If for any cause whatsoever any article sold cannot be delivered, or cannot be delivered in as good condition as the same may have been at the time of sale, due to a failure or damage on the company’s part, the sale will be cancelled, and any amount that may have been paid on account of the sale will be returned to the purchaser. EXCEPTION: Eldred’s will not be held responsible for damage to picture frames or lampshades. 10. SALES TAX: All purchases are subject to the Massachusetts sales tax (currently 6.25%) unless the purchaser: a) possesses a Massachusetts sales tax exemption or resale number and registers it with Eldred’s; b) is an out‑of‑state vendor who meets requirements of Massachusetts Department of Revenue GLC 64H 1(5) and Directive 89‑10 and registers with Eldred’s prior to each purchase; or c) has purchases shipped out of state directly from Eldred’s by a bona fide shipping agent. Applications for a Massachusetts number are available through the Massachusetts Department of Corporations and Taxation. Purchases picked up at our Mystic, Connecticut location or shipped to Connecticut are subject to 6.35% Connecticut state sales tax unless a resale certificate is provided. 11. RESERVES: Unless advertised as an “Unreserved Auction”, all sales may have items subject to reserve (an agreed upon price between the auctioneer and the consignor, below which the article will not be sold). 12. COLLECTION OF PURCHASES: Delivery or shipping arrangements must be made within seven (7) days from the close of the auction for all purchases. All items must be removed from Eldred’s facilities within fourteen (14) days of the end of the auction. All items remaining after fourteen days may be subject to a $5/per item/perday storage fee. No items will be released unless storage fees are paid in full. Items remaining over thirty (30) days from the close of the auction may be sold for the buyer’s account minus auction and storage fees. 13. PACKING: Purchasers are advised that packing and/or handling by Eldred’s employees is undertaken solely as a courtesy for the convenience of customers. In the case of fragile articles, it will be undertaken at the sole discretion of the company. Handling and packing by Eldred’s is at the risk of the purchaser. SHIPPING: When requested, Eldred’s may arrange shipment of paid purchases. Eldred’s will not be responsible for damage or loss once the item has been received by the shipper. In the case of fragile articles, shipping will be undertaken at the sole discretion of the shipper. Please refer to our Advice to Bidders for details. 14. These Conditions of Sale cannot be altered except in writing by Eldred’s or by public announcement by the auctioneer at the time of the sale. 15. Bidding on any article(s) indicates acceptance of the terms set forth above.

16. These Conditions of Sale and any suits arising thereunder shall be construed and governed by the laws of Massachusetts. Revised 10/12/16 To view color images and condition reports for all lots please visit www.eldreds.com.
