Dear Members of the Elder Family,

I am sure I did not realize the sacrifice my mom made to send me and my siblings to Catholic grade schools and high schools. Since my dad died when I was 12 years old, it could not have been easy for her to navigate raising five kids by herself, let alone the worry of how she would continue to send them all to Catholic schools. By the grace of God and the help of the community, she found a way.

Today, our students and families are extremely fortunate that Elder has a strong endowment and financial aid program that gives young men the opportunity to attend this fine institution. Scholarships and funds have been created through the generosity of our alumni and friends enabling Elder to offer tuition assistance and financial aid to over 90% of our student body – THANK YOU!

However, many families believe the cost of a Catholic education is not feasible. This past year, the State of Ohio changed the parameters for the distribution of money available from the EdChoice Scholarship program.* With this change, every Ohio family, regardless of income or school district, is now eligible for financial aid to pay private school tuition. This means that with the EdChoice Scholarship, the cost of a Catholic Elder education is viable for these families, and we encourage all families to take advantage of this Scholarship. Since the EdChoice Scholarship does not cover the full cost of tuition, a young man may be eligible for additional tuition assistance such as academic scholarships and/or financial aid, bringing the cost of the overall tuition down even further.

Setting our children up for future success means giving them a solid foundation from which to begin. Since 1922, Elder has been the cornerstone of our community, preparing and equipping its graduates to be positive forces in our ever-changing world. Now more than ever, being a Panther and a part of the Elder Family is within reach.

Thanks for all you do for our students and Elder High School!

Where is it Coming from... and Where is it Going?

Each year, Elder is truly blessed by the amazing support of our caring benefactors. This generosity ensures that a formative and comprehensive Catholic education is affordable for young men to attend Elder. We are grateful to all our alumni, parents, and friends for their commitment to making a difference in the lives of our students while providing a foundation for our young men to become respectful leaders and positive forces in a diverse world.

Part of our strategic plan is to build upon our strong Catholic identity and commitment to service by providing a transformative educational experience for our students as well as continue to provide strong academic programs that challenge our students and reflect the changing demands of post-high school life. Our plan will involve continued investment in our campus, our tools for learning, and our faculty and staff. Our student offerings – from campus life to academic and athletic opportunities – are highly competitive thanks to your generosity.

We will continue to nurture the personal development of the young men in our care and encourage them to work with others for the common good. Your gifts have and continue to make a difference. Because of you, we look to the future with confidence for all the opportunities it holds for our students, and for that and so much more, we are grateful.

Thank you for your loyalty and generosity to Elder

Christian Leadership Award

While at Elder, Paul was active in the Glee Club and singing ensembles. When he was a sophomore, he had a teacher who had them say the Prayer of St. Ignatius. He still says it and lives by the line “To give and not to count the cost.”

After graduating in 1977, Paul attended the University of Kentucky where he received a degree in Applied Science/ Culinary Arts. He owned a German restaurant and deli in Louisville before returning home. He worked at, owned, and operated Rally’s franchises for 35 years.

Paul serves on the board of the Ollie Schmitt Foundation which raises money for mentally and physically disabled children. He is also on the board of Advocates of Catholic Education Organization which helps families pay tuition at Catholic grade schools, high schools, and universities. He is a 3rd degree Knights of Columbus where he was involved with the GCL football banquet and is still involved with the youth football playoff game at Elder.

“Beth and I have always had a faith-based home where, along with our three sons, we would volunteer together. We always felt it was important to give back and teach those lessons to our sons. The nine years our boys were at Elder gave me the opportunity to have a second experience through our sons’ involvement in various activities and sports. It deeply entrenched us in the Elder family.”

Spirit of Elder Award

DICK DIMUZIO ’77

Tom Jennings ’80 surprised Dick with the Spirit Award. He said the committee, which Dick has chaired for over ten years, decided to add another spirit award recipient to this year’s slate of honorees for all the years Dick has been involved with all things Elder.

Dick was so overcome with emotion when he spoke. “I love what I do here. I’ve been on the Alumni Board for 28 years and chairman of the Alumni Award committee for the past 10 years. I really enjoy making the phone calls to the award recipients and have made a lot of friends from making those calls. I really appreciate all of you.”

KEVIN WELCH ’01

Kevin was a key contributor and visionary of the website EHSPORTS. Regardless of whether it is hot, freezing cold, raining, and miserable, you will see Kevin roaming the sidelines taking incredible pictures that he later edits and uploads to EHSPORTS. Kevin was a key member of the team that took our game audio and combined it into video. Kevin, with the direction of teacher Dave Rapien, took baby steps to get that video content on the internet.

“Prep Sports Radio Network has been an inspiration for me,” said Kevin, “sharing with the worldwide Elder family all the great things that are Elder. I started EHSports my senior year at Elder as a class project and realized it’s a way for me to share my talents and never have to leave Elder.”

Academic & Professional Distinction Award

MIKE FINLEY ’79

While at Elder, Mike lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. He was the team captain of the basketball and baseball teams and was a member of the 1978 State Champion baseball team.

After graduation, Mike attended Creighton University where he played baseball and was later elected to its Hall of Fame. He earned a B.S. and B.A. in Marketing. He also attended the General Manager Program in Executive Education at Harvard Business School.

He has over three decades of experience in senior management with many cellular companies. Mike is now the CEO and serves on the Board of Directors of Boingo. He also serves on the board of CTIA, the Los Angeles Sports and Entertainment Commission and the Creighton University Board of Trustees.

Mike said, “When I got the call about this award, the first person I thought of was my dad.” Mike went on to thank his mom and dad for the sacrifice they made for him to come to Elder. He also went on to thank the coaches, teachers, and people at Elder who really made a difference in his development as a person and a player with a special thanks to Coach Feds and Bob Bushman. Mike was joined by his wife Susan and three of their four sons and spouses, as well as his mom, two of his brothers, and his aunt.

Athletic Achievement Award

Doug was a three-sport athlete while at Reading High School. After graduating in 1984, he went to The University of Louisville and played football for one year. When he returned home, his high school coach Ken Minor asked him to coach at Reading. In 1988, Elder’s former head coach Tom Grippa asked Doug if he would like to join the coaching staff at Elder. Doug loved coaching and decided to make teaching and coaching his career. Doug credits both Ken Minor and Tom Grippa as influential role models and mentors in his life.

Doug received a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Cincinnati, his teaching license from Mt. Saint Joseph University, and a master’s degree in sports administration from Xavier University. He began teaching at Elder in 1990 and was named head football coach in 1997.

His teams have amassed an overall record of 210-96. In 2008 and 2019, they were State runner up and won back-to-back State Championships in 2002 and 2003.

“I’ve been about to do what I do because of my wife, Cherie,” said Doug, “I love what I do here because it’s a family and I’ve been lucky to be surrounded by great people.” Doug finished by saying, “Our kids are different. This place means a ton to them – their work ethic, how much “team” means to them. Coaching in this atmosphere is great.”

Cultural Enrichment Award

Dave Allen introduced Maribeth as an exceptionally talented performer and teacher whom he has known since she was a child. A natural musician, an accomplished pianist, and blessed with a beautiful voice, Marybeth was in chorus, ensembles, and musical productions at Seton.

Maribeth graduated from Seton in 1981 and entered Northern Kentucky University. She graduated in 1985 with a Bachelor of Music in Secondary Education with a minor in voice/piano. Sr. Mary Theresa, Maribeth’s chorus teacher at Seton, called and told her she was leaving Seton and she’d like Maribeth to apply for the job. She did and the rest is history.

Maribeth said she has enjoyed every minute spent with the Seton and Elder community. “The greatest thing about the whole experience is that it’s not all about the music; it’s about the kids who haven’t had a place in life and music is where I found I belong, and I see the same in these high school kids.”

Maribeth is the proud mother of Tony and Sam. When Tony passed away in first grade, Maribeth’s faith in God was a powerful example of trusting in the Lord and accepting His will. Her strength and faith continue to be a shining example to us all. Maribeth is married to Larry Kutzleb and together they have four stepchildren and five beautiful grandchildren.

Cultural Enrichment Award

Luke is an accomplished composer, conductor, singer, pianist, and educator. Luke credits his four years at Elder as the driving focusing force to his career in choral music, composition, and teaching.

After receiving his Bachelor of Music in Choral Music Education from Bowling Green State University in 2002, he went on to get his Master of Music in Choral Conducting Performance in 2003.

Luke served for nearly 23 years as the Director of Music Ministry at Corpus Christi University Parish at the University of Toledo before becoming the Director of Music Ministry at All Saints Catholic Church in Rossford, OH. Luke served as the Director of Choral Music at St. John’s Jesuit High School for 15 years before beginning his current position as Director of Choral Music for Evergreen Local Schools in Metamora, OH in 2019. Luke serves on the board of the Toledo Repertoire Theatre, and has directed several shows for the organization. He is a member of the Liturgical Composers Forum and is an active member of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians, the Ohio Music Educators Association, and the American Choral Directors Association.

“In addition to thanking all the people I’d like to thank,” said Luke, “thanking the Elder experience is primarily what I’d like to do and all the people that go along with that. The biggest change for me at Elder was the musical experience.”

One Saturday in November, Elder’s Servant Leadership Team spent the morning working with People Working Cooperatively to rake leaves for our neighbors in Price Hill.

On September 18th, the faculty and staff had the opportunity to perform Corporal Works of Mercy – clothe the naked and shelter the homeless – within the community. The service projects were completed at the Shelterhouse on Gest Street, Bayley Place, and St. Vincent DePaul.

Fifteen Elder students, one parent, and three Elder teachers embarked on a Spanish immersion trip to Costa Rica. For a week, our students got to experience living with a host family, whitewater rafting down the Pacuare River, and ziplining 656 feet over the canopy of the Arenal Rainforest while catching views of the Arenal Volcano. In between, they learned about the culture, the food, and the people of Costa Rica. It truly was an immersive experience.

Mrs. James and two students attended Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Medical Center’s High School Science Symposium. They learned about career options in the medical field and took tours of the Imaging Center and Occupational Therapy Center.

The day concluded with a small group discussion with medical professionals allowing students time to ask questions of interest to them in a smaller setting.

Mrs. Hanks’s French 3/4/AP students toured the visiting Picasso exhibit, Out of Bounds, at the Cincinnati Art Museum. After studying Picasso’s biography in class, students viewed the collection of landscapes, completed largely in France. After their self-guided tour of the special exhibit, the students explored the museum’s permanent collection. Special thanks to Elder’s art teacher, Mr. Jim Doerflien, for helping to chaperone this field trip and for sharing his knowledge with the students.

At the end of October, six Elder freshmen and their dads prepared and served brunch to 125 residents of the Bethany House Services shelter for homeless families. The Spiritual Boosters have been sponsoring brunches for the Bethany House for several years. The students not only served the meal but played with many of the children after they finished their brunch.

Mrs. James’ Materials Science classes visited the Hollaender Manufacturing Company for National Manufacturing Day. Todd Zureick, ’94, showed the students a variety of processes in aluminum production. The students saw material testing, aluminum part machining, aluminum cast preparation, aluminum casting, finishing methods, and fabrication of Hollaender's speed-rail systems.

Robben ’90 for leading the mass.

Ohio Supreme Court Justice Pat Fischer spoke to the students in Mr. Jansing’s Business Law class. baseball track & field

The season was another thrilling year for the Panthers finishing 23-9 overall record and a regional runner-up finish. Highlights included defeating the top ranked teams in OH, KY, and TN. During the Panthers tournament run, they defeated Lebanon in a 15 inning marathon to win districs! In the regionals semi-final, Elder defeated #2 ranked Mason 5-2. The regional final vs #1 ranked Moeller was a match-up of the top 2 teams in Southwest Ohio. The game was exciting throughout, but unfortunately, Moeller came out on top 7-6. It was certainly a heartbreaking loss but didn’t diminish another outstanding season for Elder Baseball.

The Elder Track and Field team entered this season with one its most inexperienced teams in recent memory. Over half the roster consisted of freshman and sophomores and a few freshman athletes really stepped up and made some noise. This mix of veteran and young athletes allowed the athletes to excel this season by winning three meets on their schedule along with three runner-up finishes. Freshman Derek Uran made exceptional strides in the 110 hurdles breaking the freshman record with a season best 15.36 finishing fifth in the regional meet. Freshman Tommy Becker also set the freshman record in the discus with a throw of 133’6”. Freshman Sam Moore broke the freshman record in the 100-meter dash (11.19) and the 200-meter record (22.9). Justin Re led the charge for the Panthers once again this season despite pulling a hamstring late in the season. Justin made the jump to the 400-meter dash and ran an impressive 48.61. football cross country

It’s never easy following a team that comes off of a successful season many thought was an overachievement. Many questions were asked of the 2023 varsity football edition. Led by the 2023 GCL South co-player of the year, Ryan Brass, this team had some big wins and narrow losses early on. Playing the top two teams in the state of Ohio down to the wire two weeks apart, followed by a victorious trip to the top team in KY, they proved that your best effort was required week in and week out. Defensively, Colton Ginn, Max Stallmeyer and Luke Fortkamp paced a unit that faced a great deal of adversity via injury. Offensively, when it wasn’t Brass making plays, GCL South Receiver of the year Josh Mirus and Drew Murphy were his favorite targets through the air. Without question, the highlights of the season came on North Bend Road with wins over the Bombers and Lancers in league play. The playoffs would see another victory over a familiar neighborhood foe in Oak Hills in the first round. The season ended at Lakota West in the second round. Not how the boys wanted to end, yet they held their heads high.

soccer

Elder Soccer had a great season of growth and is moving the in right direction. The boys were ranked in the top five of the city all year and at one point were ranked #10 in the state. Varsity opened the season on their new turf with a convincing win over Sycamore. Much of the varsity's success was thanks to our 11 seniors, who went above and beyond off the field to help us create a winning culture for the program. Up top, Caden Amonn, Aren Kolkmeyer, Jack Banister, Andrew Guidroz, and Zach Hornberger kept defenses honest with their ability to get in behind and link up play. The space they vacated left space for Mason Paschka to show off his talents. Mason set the school regular season record with 21 goals and 2 assists! Our midfield was led by seniors AJ Mancini, Zach Schmitz, junior Hayden Rankin, and sophmore Nicholas Louenberger. Our defense was led by Connor Schwarz, Reece Zigelmier, Joey Roth, Andry Perez,Connor Accurso, Ethan Lipps, Sam Bill, and Austin Tettenhorst. This defense helped Reece Zigelmier register ten career shutouts. While the 11 seniors will not be back next year, they have sturdied the foundation, which was seen through our JV A team notching their best record on record with 9-6-3. JV B finished with a 5-5-7 record, playing against mostly JV A programs.

The Varsity A team score of 290 at Heatherwoode Golf Club in the GCL Finals is a NEW TEAM 18 HOLE RECORD ALL TIME FOR ANY COURSE beating the old 291 at Yankee Trace in 2017. Altiora Award

“PURSUIT OF THE HIGHER THINGS IN LIFE”

Congratulations to this year’s Altiora Award recipient, Jim Jansing ’74!

After graduating from Elder in 1974, Jim attended the University of Cincinnati where he graduated magna cum laude in urban affairs, then earned a master’s degree in industrial relations, and then finally graduated from the College of Law in 1982.

For the past 44 years, Jim has been a fixture at Keating, Muething & Klekamp Law Firm; the last 34 as a partner in the firm’s Business Representation & Transactions Group.

Staying closely connected to his alma mater, Jim has served on the Principal’s Advisory Board for 10 years and currently serves as a board trustee for both the Elder High School Fund Trust and the Elder High School Altiora Fund.

A few years ago, Jim expressed his interest in teaching a law course at Elder. This year, Jim is volunteering as a teacher at Elder, teaching Business Law to 18 seniors. He has devoted countless hours and energy to activities that promote and support Elder High School. His energy, and devotion to our students, families, and alums define our recipient of this year’s Altiora Award.

Jim and his wife, Margie, have been married for 45 years. They both are huge Elder supporters and we are extremely grateful for their support.

Charlie Squeri

“ LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWAR D ”

Congratulations to this year’s Charlie Squeri Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, Gary Willig ’68!

After graduating from Elder, Gary received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Cincinnati and began his professional career working for the company Gary’s father, Don, and Uncle Edgar founded in 1946 - Parkway Products, a company that specializes in the molding and fabrication of plastics. Gary spent his entire professional career of 35 years at Parkway and retired as President and CEO in September 2006.

Gary currently works with several roundtable groups involving company presidents and CEOs going over financials for their companies and giving his input and advice.

Gary has dedicated his life to his family and the Elder family in countless ways. He generously supports every capital campaign as well as the annual fund drive, athletic boosters, and PAC 100. Gary and his wife Linda have also traveled Europe on five of the Elder Glee Club European Concert Tours in support of their grandsons who sang in the glee club.

Gary and Linda have been married for 52 years and have four children: Scott ’93, Chris ’01, Amy, and Julie. Thank you for your support of Elder High School!

The Church Bell Chimed ’til it Rang Eighty-Five Times For our friend… Edmund Adams

IT WAS MY FOURTH YEAR AT ELDER AND IN HELPING TO ORGANIZE THE ANNUAL WALK FOR OTHERS, WE DECIDED TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT. SINCE 2004 WAS THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF ARCHBISHOP WILLIAM HENRY ELDER’S DEATH, IT WAS DECIDED TO HAVE A FOUR-MILE WALK AND BRIEF SERVICE AT HIS GRAVESITE AT ST. JOSEPH CEMETERY RATHER THAN THE TRADITIONAL TWELVE-MILE WALK.

The morning of the walk, an all-wash-out rain got in the way of our plan, and we settled for having a Mass and brief program in the Fieldhouse. It was there where I first met Ed Adams ’56. Not only was Ed a prominent Cincinnati attorney, a dedicated family man, and a true friend to the Elder community, but he was also a distant relative of the late William Henry Elder. Ed spoke that day to our students so that they might learn a little bit about Elder’s namesake.

synonymous in the past. They remain synonymous now and will remain so in the future.”

Ed passed away in September 2023 at the age of 85 and these words from nearly 20 years ago still ring true today. They are a reminder of not only how Ed described a great man but also his alma mater. His love for all things Notre Dame and all things Elder poured out of him through his enthusiastic participation in many fundraising and camaraderie-building events over the many years he supported both institutions.

Having traced back his family’s genealogy long after he graduated from Elder, Ed discovered his family’s direct relationship with Elder which filled him with immense pride. It was “a tale of courage,” he told those young men that day, “the courage of an Archbishop during Civil War times.” His closing remark to the students was “Elder and courage. Those two words have been

In 2008, the Adams Tennis Center became part of the newly developed Panther Athletic Complex. Through his major gift for the project, Ed’s generosity is permanently recognized on a marker featured prominently near the tennis courts. As an avid tennis player well into his 80s, this boulder represents his strength in character, mind, and body that he demonstrated all throughout his life. Panther tennis players for years to come will hone their tennis skills on Elder’s five courts thanks to Ed and his recognition of the importance of the tennis program and home-court advantage.

During preparations for Elder’s recently celebrated centennial, a transcript of Ed’s eloquent remarks at the 75th Anniversary

Rally on Fountain Square surfaced. He also spoke at Elder’s 78th graduation exercises in 2000 and has served on several leadership committees for campaigns. He was an Altiora Fund trustee from 2008-2012 and received the Professional Alumni Award in 2016.

Professional awards such as the Cincinnati Bar Association’s Volunteer of the Year Award in 1998 and Notre Dame’s 2004 Club Award of the Year, among many others, were feathers in Ed’s cap but more important is what Ed did to ensure the future of the institutions, such as Elder. Ed’s involvement as a member of Elder’s Fr. Schmitt Planned Giving Society has encouraged and will encourage others to consider including Elder in their estate, and his own legacy left behind will be impactful.

The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, of which Ed was a proud member, sang it best at Ed’s funeral, “May the road rise up to meet you… May the sun shine warm upon your face… and may God hold you in the palm of His hand.”

THE FATHER SCHMITT PLANNED GIVING SOCIETY, FOUNDED IN 1989 AND NAMED IN HONOR OF ELDER’S FIRST PRINCIPAL REV. WILLIAM G. SCHMITT, HAS GROWN TO 167 MEMBERS WHO HAVE SHARED WITH ELDER PROVISIONS IN THEIR ESTATE PLANS FOR A DEFERRED GIFT TO THE SCHOOL. THESE INCLUDE GIFTS FROM A BEQUEST IN THEIR WILL OR FROM OTHER INSTRUMENTS SUCH AS TRUSTS, IRA AND LIFE INSURANCE. To learn more about Elder’s planned giving program and Fr. Schmitt Society, contact Development Director Tom Reiring, reiringtw@elderhs.net or 513.921.3425.

PICTURED RIGHT: Ed served as a Lieutenant and Captain in the US Army and therefore qualified to participate in an Honor Flight to Washington D.C.

Michael and Dennis Bartlett visited The Pit in July to view the marker dedicating the field to their grandfather, legendary Elder coach WALTER “BABE” BARTLETT. They were joined on campus by their spouses and cousin, Bill Schwetschenau, and Bill’s son (Babe’s great-grandson) Jake, a current sophomore at Elder. Mike had attended the field dedication ceremony in 2009, but this was the first time Dennis saw the marker in person. WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR TEETH?!

There’s nothing quite like regaining consciousness and finding your mouth packed with surgical gauze. Take my word for it.

Of all the “get-to-know-you” icebreaker-type questions that I’ve ever answered, “What’s something about yourself that not many people know?” is my favorite. My go-to answer has always been this: I’ve had twenty teeth pulled in my lifetime. Yes, twenty. Twelve at one time, if you can believe that! I think I was seven years old at the time; regardless, twenty has been a total gone unmatched amongst those with whom I’ve shared this tidbit about me.

So, what is it about you that not many people know or would be surprised to learn?

Let’s do this: Let’s find out more about one another. Scan the QR code below with your smartphone or go to www.elderhs.org/Share and tell us something about yourself that not many others know. If you prefer, you can mail your tidbit to my attention at school.

We’ll then gather up grads’ replies and publicize our favorites in the next issue of The PRIDE. Publicized or not, all grads’ entries received before April 1, 2024, will be entered into a random drawing for some great Elder prizes, like a $200 gift certificate to our Spirit Store, or a backpack cooler filled with spirit wear, or a sports pass that grants free admission for you and a guest into any Elder home athletic contest next fall!

IMPORTANT: To submit your entry, you’ll need to provide your unique Elder ID number which you will find on the mailing label of this magazine.

This should be fun and entertaining, and I look forward to reading your entry once it arrives!

Keep striving for Altiora –the Higher Things!
