I want to thank all of you – the Elder Community for “showing up” to support Elder ... not only in this milestone year but over decades.
As individuals, we can make a difference. When we unite as an Elder Community, we’re powerful.
A prime example is The Pit – hailed as one of the Top Ten high school football stadiums in the country. It was an idea and a labor of love for the Elder Community in the 1930s and 1940s. Teachers, alumni, and students had a vision for a 10,000-seat stadium and built it by hand.
The Grotto – an iconic place of worship on our campus – was another project conceived and built by teachers and students. Completed in the fall of 1951, it has hosted countless team prayers and has served as a place for spiritual reflection for the Elder family.
The PAC – our 65-acre off-campus athletic facility that houses baseball, soccer, tennis, and track & field, was conceived, and constructed by loyal and generous Elder grads. They had the vision to turn a hillside, full of trees and overgrown brush, into one of the premiere athletic facilities in the city.
Even in the early days, the pride and power of the Elder Community were formidable. And the growth, investment, and transformation of Elder have continued generation after generation.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge that this generation of Elder alumni and friends also have played a role in our success and remain vitally important to our future.
We embarked on a capital campaign in June of 2019 with a goal of raising $10MM to fund our most pressing capital
needs. The campaign concluded in August of 2022. Thanks to the generosity of the Elder Community, we blew that goal out of the water, having $18.2MM committed to the campaign. Those funds are allowing us to: improve the physical campus; grow the tuition assistance endowment; expand our college dual-credit program; expand our skilled trades program; and support faculty & staff professional development. And, for the first time ever, this year’s Annual Fund has exceeded $1MM in contributions. Your ongoing support is greatly appreciated and is making a difference.
We graduated 171 seniors on May 16. We will welcome 210 incoming freshmen in the fall for a total enrollment of 798 students next year. Our enrollment has consistently been growing.
Perhaps these incoming freshmen spotted some yard signs as the west side was a sea of purple. The Elder pride has been palpable this past year. I’ve never been prouder to be a part of this Elder Community and this is coming from someone who has long considered every day as a Purple Friday.
In closing, I want to acknowledge that one of the biggest benefits of this milestone anniversary is that we deepened our relationships with our most fervent supporters and reconnected with friends we hadn’t seen in a while. Let’s pledge to stay connected and strive for the higher things as an Elder Community.
God bless and Altiora!

Introducing our commencement speaker, Mike Finley ’89, was Coach Joe Schoenfeld ’77.
“I coached Mike on the JV basketball team then he went on to play varsity for Coach Frey. Mike was a very good player, a good teammate, and an important part of GCL championship teams on all three levels. After Elder, Mike received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Xavier University in 1993 and then earned a Master of Science in Sports Administration at Ohio University in 1995. He began his business career working for the Atlanta Committee of the Olympic Games which hosted the 1996 games. From there, he worked for the World Tennis Association where he ascended the ranks. In 2006, Mike launched Finley & Associates which focused on buying and selling global construction equipment. Since then, he has started two other businesses tied to the heavy equipment industry.”
“Please welcome back Mike – an entrepreneur, a 2x cancer survivor, a 1989 graduate, and a good friend of Elder High School.”
These are excerpts from Mike’s talk:
When Kurt first called earlier this year, I started to put together my remarks and thought the best approach would be from the heart.
We all grow up with “our story”. Mine was no different from most of yours -growing up on the west side and being kids were incredible times. For me, things changed in the 7th grade when I went in for surgery to remove my appendix and soon after was diagnosed with Stage 3 Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Cancer. I spent a full summer at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. I missed a lot of school in 8th grade, but the kind people at St Dominic allowed me to graduate with my friends so we could all attend Elder together. This was so important to me! I was very embarrassed to have cancer, but it did give my life purpose and clarity.
Graduates, your life is a journey that will be filled with many of life’s highs and lows. At times, it will feel like a rollercoaster ride. Always maintain a positive attitude and stay on track. Better things will come. YOUR LIFE HAS GREAT PURPOSE!
My achievement in high school and college could be best described in one word “mediocre”. I was an average student and really didn’t have a clear pathway. I decided to move forward and that my best opportunity to maximize my potential was to get outside my comfort zone which was Cincinnati. Finding your pathway to success may require you to get outside your comfort zone and be different. Embrace it.
After leaving Cincinnati, I spent over ten years working for a large media company in its sports marketing division. I had two simple goals – show up every day with the best work ethic in the building and whenever my bosses asked me to do something ‘No’ was not in my vocabulary. Taking on projects that were not specifically in my wheelhouse had its risks, but it also gave me the ability to diversify my skill set and learn so many new things. Seize opportunities and trust yourself. Everything is earned. Don’t be afraid to take some calculated risks.
Ironically, my time in this industry concluded. We were purchased by another large media company, and I received a severance package; basically, I got fired. I was hurting and felt like a failure, but getting fired ignited an inferno inside me. It taught me to not let anyone control my future and career. I took the leap of faith to change careers with the goal of company ownership and landed in the construction industry.
You all will fail at things as you move forward. Embrace these failures as they are part of the process. Your future will require resiliency. Never forget the faith-based education that Elder has given you. It means so much more than you realize sitting here tonight. Life has challenges. Look to God for answers and make him a priority and continue to give back.
I wish all of you the best of luck. Remember, the harder you work......the LUCKIER you get.
WELCOME TO THE BROTHERHOOD.
Senior Andrew Ruwe was presented with the ANDREW J. BUCHER & COMPANY

The SGT. GREG WEBER U.S.M.C. AMERICAN SPIRIT AWARD is presented to a senior whose post-graduation plans include entering into some area of the military services. While academics is important, the type of person he is and the qualities he exhibits both in the classroom and out must be second to none. Finally, a positive attitude and classy disposition as an individual are essential, and his classroom conduct and cooperation in that regard must be rock solid. We would like to recognize Tommy Weber as this year’s Greg Weber American Spirit Award Winner. Tommy will be attending the United States Military Academy. Congrats, Tommy!
Congratulations to Luke Vaughn who is playing baseball at the University of Alabama.
