In celebration of our 100th anniversary, Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr was our presider for our opening day Mass. The glee club premiered a song written by Luke D. Rosen ’97 titled Almighty, Eternal God. Thank you to the Archbishop, Deacon Mike Trimpe ’76, our liturgy committee, and the glee club for such a beautiful mass.

After wrapping up their first day of orientation with a class photo in the Pit, the class of 2026 is heading out to start their Elder experience!
I love the stories told at reunions from “back in the day..” Since our celebration of Elder’s 100th began, I’ve heard lots of stories, perhaps embellished a bit, but all of them make me smile mainly because of the enthusiasm of the storyteller. If you haven’t been on campus in a while or attended one of our anniversary events, I highly encourage you to do so –you won’t be disappointed!

Dear Members of the Elder Family,
As we continue to celebrate Elder High School’s 100th anniversary, it is a perfect opportunity to reflect on where we have been so we can look forward to what lies ahead for our school and community. It is also an opportunity to unite our alums and friends of Elder in various fashions to celebrate the success of our wonderful institution.
Over the past several years there have been many improvements to our campus, thanks to the generosity of our loyal grads and friends. On August 7, we hosted the 100 Years of Elder Open House and the doors to the school were opened to the public to view our amazing facilities. The Open House was such a fantastic time for me because I had the opportunity to talk with alumni who I haven’t seen for some time or some I’ve never met before. I listened to many of them, many who haven’t been inside the school for years, share their stories, and talk of their memories, the impressive improvements to the facilities, and how beautiful the campus looks. Throughout that day, my mind constantly turned to a story I had heard several years ago of a high school teacher who shared some insights with her students…
Each of us is put here on earth to learn, share, love, appreciate and give of ourselves. None of us knows when this fantastic experience will end; it can be taken away at any moment and we must make the most out of every single day. The teacher asked her students to make her a promise – from now on, find something beautiful to notice. Please look for these things and cherish them. For, although it may sound trite to some, these are the things we often take for granted. We must make it important to notice them, for at any time, it can all be taken away.
I am most appreciative of each of you and the role you have played in the history of Elder High School. We, at Elder High School, are very fortunate and blessed and don’t ever want to take that for granted.
God bless and ALTIORA!
Kurt Ruffing ’81 Principal

More than Bricks
BY JOHN PLOEHS
An Elder mentor and friend once told me, “Elder…there’s more than bricks in that building.” Throughout my teaching career, those words never left me. For if classrooms could breathe and walls could talk, just think of the stories this treasured building could relate—100 years of tales and the people who lived them. For many, the years at Elder were some of the best years of our lives. Every day we lived and worked, we shared and enjoyed, we celebrated and commiserated. Teachers, administrators, coaches, and sta grew to love Elder and the duties they performed. Indeed, what may have begun as a job, for many became a vocation. Some spent significant portions of their adult careers in these venerated halls, while others gave their entire working lives to Elder, wholly intent on making a di erence in the world. During their brief or extended tenures at Elder, many could detect some ine able feeling. Let us not forget the comfort of discipline and tradition, the freedom and curiosity of youth, the wonder and reflection of study, and the simple joy of pursuing a task with others and bringing it to completion, all under the watchful eyes of God. In all those experiences—the planning, the e ort, the work, the laughter, and the tears— we implicitly and explicitly pushed ourselves and others toward a greater good, “Altiora”— pursuit of the higher things. As the motto says, “What I had, I gave…”
So, in the spirit of collegiality and appreciation, and during this special time, those who served Elder—faculty, administration, coaches and sta —are invited to a 100th Anniversary social on Sunday, January 29 from 2-5 pm in the Elder cafeteria. Drinks and light apps will be served. Pass the word to all non-grads who served. Please RSVP via e-mail to Larry Weinheimer ( weinheimerla@elderhs.org ), John Ploehs ( jfploehs@hotmail.com ) or Jim Jansing ( jjansing@kmklaw.com ) so we can prepare properly.
We look forward to seeing you!
Our 100TH ANNIVERSARY celebration is o to a great start! These are just a few of the events and activities that took place this summer and early fall!

“The sense of family that you experience at Elder is something you won’t find anywhere else. I felt it on my first shadow day, and I feel it every day I walk in the halls, attend a sporting event, or sing the alma mater.
Elder gives you the opportunities to not only grow as a student but also a person in the world.
When you become a Panther, you become a part of something so much bigger than yourself. You become a piece of the legacy that Elder continues to build year after year.”

In October, the Pro-Life club traveled to Columbus to participate in the first-ever Ohio March for Life!
Mr. Schmidt’s AP Economics visited the Great American Ballpark. Students in the “war room” listened to Assistant General Manager Sam Grossman discuss the economic factor used to put together a Major League Baseball team. The Reds were kind enough to gift everyone tickets to the afternoon game against the Pittsburgh Pirates!
Elder High School prides itself on developing the whole person, not just the student. As such, numerous extracurricular and enrichment experiences are available. Elder’s Clubs and Organizations Fair took place in the Pit with representatives from each group present to answer any questions students may have had.
All the old lockers were replaced with new wider lockers to accommodate more books and gear…and yes, they are purple!
The Altiora Express hit downtown Cincinnati as part of the Blink Parade. Congrats to all the artists and musicians involved!

At our first home game, Representative Cindy Abrams presented Elder High School with a proclamation for our 100th anniversary!
The faculty and staff of Elder experienced an overnight retreat in September at the Jesuit Spiritual Center at Milford. The retreat focused on each person’s journey to Elder and their vocation as ministers to the students and families they serve as well as how they can use the corporal works of mercy to answer Jesus’ call to serve the least among us.
Congratulations to Ben Johnson ’23 for being recognized by the National Merit Scholarship program as a Commended Student.
Our Community Service tutors are back in the schools again this year assisting students with their classroom assignments and homework. St. Teresa of Avila School states, “1st grade loves working with the Elder boys! They read with us and review our sight words and spelling words each week!”

The Glee Club’s 2022 European Concert Tour to France and Belgium took place from June 6th–17th. The boys went up the Eiffel Tower, took a boat ride on the Seine River, climbed up high atop Mont Saint-Michel and spent a day at Disneyland Paris. They also took in some amazing and moving history with a visit to Normandy and the Landing Beaches of Arromanches and Omaha Beach and also Pointe du Hoc where the American Rangers landed. A highlight of the trip included the boys singing for a prayer service and concert at the American Cemetery where the names of all of the fallen Elder grads from military conflicts were read.

The Panthers began the 2022 season with inexperience at several key positions. As the season progressed, the Panthers continued to improve and won their last eight of nine games to finish the season at 18-9. The strength was undoubtedly the team’s pitching depth finishing with a stellar team ERA of 2.17 with 14 different players getting time on the bump. Another strength was team defense with outstanding play up the middle and a team fielding percentage of .954. The post-season started off well with a 9-1 sectional win vs Anderson before dropping a heart-breaking season ending 1-0 defeat vs Lebanon.

The 2022 spring season was a historic season for the Elder LAX program. While we did not go as far in the playoffs as we hoped, this team accomplished a lot. These accomplishments include most single season wins in program history, as well as, defeating the defending Division II state champions in both Ohio and Indiana with upsets over Guerin Catholic and Mariemont. This senior class really flipped the script on the culture and personality of the locker room. This flip is where the credit needs to go for this historic season. They built a foundation that will make any coach's job easy going forward.

“ LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWAR D ”
CHARLIE
SQUERI, FORMER
OWNER AND CEO OF SQUERI FOODS, WAS THE FOUNDER OF THE ELDER CLASSIC GOLF OUTING
IN 2002. AFTER HIS PASSING IN 2003, AN ANNUAL AWARD WAS CREATED IN MEMORY OF AND TO HONOR CHARLIE.
IT WAS CREATED AS A WAY FOR US TO PAY TRIBUTE TO A MEMBER OF THE ELDER FAMILY WHO HAS EXHIBITED THROUGHOUT THEIR LIFETIME “SUPPORT OF THE ELDER FAMILY.”
This year, our honored awardee is Tom Mendel ’72. After graduating from Elder, Tom received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Cincinnati and began his professional career working for American National Rubber in Huntington, West Virginia. Then in 1997, Tom acquired a 15-year-old company called Performance Plastics. Tom, as President and CEO, brought his passion for solving customers’ most difficult problems along with his two decades of technical and management experience and expanded its engineering and thermoplastic manufacturing bench strength with key team additions. In 2015, Tom brought in a private equity firm, making them a value-added partner and source of additional capital to accelerate Performance Plastics’ growth.
After Tom sold his business, he began working on another projecto2 Urban Farms that opened in March of 2019 – o2 Urban Farms is a not-for-profit aquaponic urban farm that provides jobs to individuals with disabilities and produce and food education in challenged neighborhoods. The Ken Anderson Alliance recently took over what Tom started and now has other o2 Urban Farms popping up in other areas across the city. Tom, as described by his neighbors and friends, is just one of the nicest guys they know…who would simply do anything for anybody in need.
Tom has dedicated his life to his family (wife, Arlene, and their three children – Jessica, Lara, and Nathan) and the Elder family in countless ways. Congratulations, Tom!

HOW IT STARTED…
The earliest email I have saved referencing the planning of Elder’s Centennial dates to November 2016 when retired Elder teacher, public relations guru, and development director Toby Heile shared the obituary of Rudolf Hermes, a renowned Cincinnati architect who in 1972 designed and managed the renovation of the first floor of the original school building as part of Elder’s 50th anniversary celebration. According to Toby, “The major portion of his design were fiberglass ‘couches’ – white with purple seats – that were accompanied by white fiberglass ottomans that took up most of the entry foyer.” I knew that space as “The Purple Lounge.” Perhaps you did, too.
The email conversation, which also included Kurt Ruffing, former principal Tom Otten, and several others, soon took a stroll down Memory Lane. Tom was next to chime in, “Rudy also came up with the idea of the orange stripe that ran along the first-floor wall and carried the orange theme to all the classroom transoms where the room numbers were displayed. In addition to ‘The Purple Lounge’ and dropped ceiling over it, Rudy also had the idea of the ‘floating’ hall lights which gave the illusion of a lower ceiling.” Do you recall the orange stripe or ever wonder where it came from? Now you know!
Toby then lamented that gone are the “Basement” Bill Kolkmeyers, Paul Strykers, and Sophie Aubergers who could “help us solve some of the mysteries of Elder’s past.” But the online conversation between the group spurred one of the earliest ideas for our 100-year celebration – an archives committee which would pour through boxes (and boxes!) of Elder artifacts, unique documents, and interesting trinkets of our past and eventually showcase them during our 100 Years Open House back in August.
The preparation that our faculty, staff, alumni, and volunteers have put into our 100th anniversary events has been inspiring to witness (and truly humbling to be a part of). The Open House was just one event of so many that have been planned for this school year. If you haven’t made it to one yet, then be sure to visit www.elder100.com and see how you can still celebrate Elder’s Centennial with us. Better yet…make it a point to reconnect with old classmates and tell stories, walk down Memory Lane together, and cherish the past!
