Revolutions in Faith: Historical Profiles from Reformation Europe

• JARED DAY, PhD, taught American history at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh for 16 years. His areas of specialization are U.S. political, urban and cultural history as well as world history from the late 18th century to the present. He is the author of several books along with numerous popular and peer-reviewed articles.

• DOUG STOWELL has been a Furman University OLLI instructor in Greenville, S.C., since 2015 and for OLLI institutes across the U.S. since 2019. His background is in corporate market research and public opinion polling.

This five-lecture course covers the Reformation through a series of biographical sketches beginning with Martin Luther in the early 16th century. Each subsequent sketch explores how the Reformation evolved and changed given different national contexts, with focus on England’s Henry VIII, France’s Catherine de Medici, Spain’s Charles V and the Holy Roman Empire’s Ferdinand II. Topics include the rise of radical Protestant sects such as the Anabaptists, the Calvinists and the Puritans; as well as the emergence of the Counter-Reformation and the Thirty Years’ War. How the Hawaiian Master Shaman Taught the Seven Principles to His Apprentice

• DOUGLAS R. BARKER, MA, is an art historian, a professional metaphysical worker and an avid world traveler.

He holds a master’s degree in art history from the University of Chicago.

During 14 years in England, Germany and Switzerland, he studied Rudolf Steiner’s system of alternative education and worked as an art tour guide. Barker has traveled extensively in nearly 40 countries, and much of his expertise derives from spiritual experiences in sacred sites around the globe. Barker also holds a diploma in astrological counseling from the Astrological Psychology Institute in

Douglas Barker will present a talk-story in 10 episodes, in which a Hawaiian kahuna teaches the principles of his tradition to his apprentice. World War II began 21 years after World War I, but many historians believe that the two wars were part of one vast global dispute. These two world wars were the largest military conflicts in human history. How are they connected to each other?

This class will explore and compare cultural values, traditions, behaviors, expectations and many other aspects of our lives across the globe. We will talk about daily experiences and special moments, both happy and sad; compare cultural human reactions to circumstances and expectations from life. The subjects will include love, marriage, beauty and sexuality; death and bereavement; personal well-being and life expectations; perceptions and time management; and food as an important manifestation of cultures.

Participants will be provided foreign and domestic movie lists that explore the above subjects so they can continue the cultural journey.

Is history an accidental sequence of events; a series of endless cycles doomed to be repeated? Or, might there be a predictable direction in which all of human history is moving?

For nearly 3,000 years, philosophers and speculative historians have attempted to deal with the question of chance or design in history. This lecture will explore the issue by examining the works of major philosophers and historians from the ancient, medieval and modern worlds. Let’s face it, the heart as a symbol doesn’t look much like the anatomical structure in our chest that keeps our heart beating. We’ll trace the origins of the symbol, its usage and the traditions that spread to Valentine’s Day, including wacky Victorian postcards and other ways we tell people we care about them. You’ll “heart” art as we walk through the history of the heart symbol.

On a cold winter day in 1903, two brothers changed the world when Wilbur Wright took off in the first manned, heavier-than-air powered aircraft. What they lacked in formal training, Wilbur and Orville Wright more than made up for in intellectual curiosity, hard work and determination. Risking their lives with often-dangerous experimental flights, the bicycle mechanics from Dayton, Ohio, successfully built a manned, powered aircraft. Professor Blaine Davies explores how the Wright Brothers began with early experiments in their bicycle shop and then, step by step, launched the age of aviation.

• KIM KEELINE, PhD, fell in love with Shakespeare’s plays when she was 12 years old. Her PhD in English literature is from the University of Southern California and she has lectured extensively on Shakespeare. She writes mysteries and published two short stories in 2020. A book collector, steam train operator and freelance website and graphic designer, Keeline geeks out about history, technology and books.

The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire The decline and fall of the Roman Empire was one of the most significant and pivotal incidents in all of human history. This lecture will review the events leading up to Rome’s fall, examine many of the theories historians have put forth explaining why Rome fell, and explore the parallels between Rome during the period of decline and contemporary Western society.

Finally, it will introduce the early Middle Ages, the civilization that would spring from the ashes of the fallen empire.

The Printing Press: Why the Pen Is Usually Mightier Than the Sword During the 15th and 16th centuries, the printing press was introduced into European society for the first time.

The world would never again be the same. The printing press changed the political, intellectual and religious foundations of European and world civilizations in ways never expected or imagined. This lecture will describe how and when the printing press was introduced into Western society and how and why it changed humanity as it entered the modern world.

BA and MA degrees in history with supporting fields in European intellectual history, history of science and technology, and anthropology.

Leone has taught at several universities throughout his career and is currently an adjunct faculty member at SDSU. He is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship and his most recent publications include: Origin: The Story of Charles Darwin (2012) and Disease in History (2016).

Living Forever: The Promise and the Peril Aubrey de Grey is an English author and scientist who specializes in gerontology and aging. De Grey and others involved in the study of senescence—the state of being old—believe that aging is a disease, not a process. In his book, Ending Aging, de Grey has carefully outlined a seven-part strategy for curing what he argues is “the disease called aging.” De Grey and other scientists are convinced it is possible one day to engineer virtual immortality in humans. This lecture will examine de Grey’s assertion and his anti-aging strategies, and it will explore the research that is being pursued by de Grey and others.

Civics, the study of the rights and duties of citizens and of how government works, assumes and requires an educated citizenry. In these turbulent times, when law and the rule of law are being challenged, a return to a civics class may be crucial for American society and the preservation of democracy. The presentation will discuss law vs. moral code, review the sources of our law and it will be interactive

pro tem, settlement conference judge and court appointed minors’ counsel in the Superior Court in Vista, California.

Charlene’s honors include being named Attorney of the Year in 2002 by the Family Law Judges in San Diego County, and she was instrumental in developing and teaching in The People’s Law School, a public education program of the North County Bar Association.

Human Microbiome There has been buzz around the gut microbiome for more than a decade, but in addition to the microbiota of the gut, humans are also host to important microbial communities that live in our lungs, mouths and skin.

More than half of the cells in and on our bodies are in fact microbial rather than human; they moderate diverse functions ranging from digestion and hormonal signaling, to regulating mood and lubricating lung tissue.

Topics include the manners in which we are populated, the strains of bacteria we want and how to care for them, and microbial community structures and functions.

His lifelong friend and World War II commander, Dwight Eisenhower, believed Patton was perhaps his best general in the field. Yet despite his admiration and personal friendship, Eisenhower reluctantly relieved Patton after V-E Day “not for what he’s done – but for what he is going to do next.” A man of contradictions, Patton was sensitive, deeply religious and loved poetry. Even so, Patton swore like a sailor, fought like a tiger and became perhaps the most fascinating, revered and yet, for some, despised general in American history.

True Crime: Harry Thaw, Stanford White and the Girl on the Red Velvet Swing In 1906, famed architect Stanford White was shot and killed by the mentally unstable millionaire Harry Kendall Thaw, who had become obsessed about White’s previous relationship with Thaw’s wife, actress Evelyn Nesbit. The Trial of the Century became a thriller with adultery, drugs, jail breaks and the first mental insanity plea (or “brainstorm”). Learn how Thaw was eventually acquitted despite having killed White in front of hundreds of witnesses.

Legends of Broadway While countless Broadway musicals may be labeled superior in terms of the music, lyrics and storylines connected with them, only a treasured group can boast of being decisive or pioneering in the evolution of the Broadway musical. This lecture presented by pianist and lecturer Bruno Leone will deal with many of these pivotal musicals and more, explaining why they were defining moments in the history of musical theater. Bruno Leone will also include stories and anecdotes about the composers and lyricists responsible for the musicals themselves. Finally, he will offer his take on that $64,000 question: “Why don’t they write songs like they used to?”

Freud stated that women past reproductive age enter a “peculiar alteration of character” that is “quarrelsome, vexatious and overbearing.” This reductive interpretation has largely endured to the current day, often diminishing a normal, even adaptive change into punchlines about hot flashes.

Ripples in Time Inspired by a 100-year-old photograph in the belongings of his Great-uncle Kim, author Russell Low spent decades searching for the stories behind the photograph. This includes the story of Ah Ying and Chinese American history through the building of the Transcontinental Railroad to the devastating effects of the Chinese Exclusion Act and subsequent slave trafficking of young Chinese women. Rooted in a strong, resilient protagonist, this story encourages everyone to explore their roots and celebrates what makes us uniquely American. Low’s book, Three Coins: A Young Girl’s Story of Kidnappings, Slavery and Romance in 19th Century America, will be available with all proceeds going to a nursing student scholarship fund.
