Bishop’s Easter Message

The Easter Covenant Mission should prioritise our church lives and mindsets. We must not deny our desire to do mission work. Our active membership initiatives must continue despite the fact that we have celebrated our 110th anniversary as a Church.

his is the time of the year where we, once again, remember, edify each other, rejoice and recommit our lives to Jesus. He rose from the dead for us to show the world that our God and Creator loves us in wonderful and mysterious ways. This is the time of the year we sing “Halejullah!” and declare that Jesus is Lord! In and through Jesus Christ, God calls us into the very depths of heaven in a rich and special relationship. As Lutheran Christians, we place a special meaning to this aspect of our lives. Since this is the “Year of Outreach” for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malaysia (ELCM), I would like to elaborate the significance of this relationship.

Culture and Character of ELCM It is inevitable that the Jesus we offer to the world will carry with us all our cultural signatures and characteristics peculiar to our heritage. It is not wrong in itself because it helps our fellow men and women of different cultures to do likewise. But our imaginations should not become stumbling blocks to our presentations of Christ. In the same way, our personal habits and values should not become stumbling blocks too! What gain is there in being a querulous church whose members are unconcerned about personal holiness? How do we break free of this bondage? How do we soldier on with our mission to raise Christ for the world to see? When will we mature in our faith? Perhaps we have not understood our faith properly. Perhaps we are only namesake Lutheran Christians. Perhaps our hearts are not circumcised and that is why we are not as dynamic as we should be. I urge all of you to place your humble hands upon your chest this Easter and come into a blessed understanding of our God and Saviour. Our Mission Consciousness The numerical growth of our congregations is very important if what we have to offer to the world is something good and valuable. We need to present Jesus in a proper biblical and contextual manner to the world. Some will say that we must pay more attention to the quality of our Christian life. But I must say that it must not be at the expense of mission. It goes hand in hand.

flight from Egypt to the crossing of the Red Sea to the journey through the desert right up to the crossing of Jordan. The highlight of the reading is the Ten Commandments. They will begin with this prologue: “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage” (Exodus 20:2), and only then are the Commandments read. Here we find not only the people acknowledging God as their true Master but also pleading not to have their iniquities visited upon them for three or four generations. But to those who acknowledge that God exists and subject their allegiance to him and proceed to live faithfully and in holiness are blessed a thousand generations. As an outward sign, Moses had his people circumcised and, he too, like Abraham, offered sacrifices.

When we understand this, we also come into a deeper understanding of the Resurrection. Jesus, who died on the Cross (not a symbolic or fantasy figure), ransomed the whole world (not just the tribe of Abraham and the nation of Moses) by offering himself as the sacrifice. We become Christians because we receive the call of the covenant to swear allegiance to Jesus Christ and to walk blameless and in personal holiness before the Lord. As an outward sign, we, too, often change our names and circumcise our hearts in baptism. This is the true meaning and call of Easter.

In Genesis chapter 17, God made a covenant with a childless old man of ninety-nine years, Abram. God tells him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless.” This is the essence of a covenant that does not change and is like a holy fire that burns throughout the Bible. To walk before the Lord is a call to obedience that comes from the acknowledgement that God Almighty is King and Master. It is a call to loyalty that is in every sense both spiritual and political in nature. But to be blameless is a call to personal holiness. God is actually telling Abram, “Swear to me your allegiance and do not bow before other gods; and be just and compassionate in your personal life.” As an outward sign, God changed Abram’s name to Abraham, and Abraham circumcised his tribe and offered a sacrifice.

Conclusion Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters-in-Christ, I appeal to you to renew your calling to be a Christian and turn your ways and come into a covenant relationship with God this Easter. In Jesus, we have a powerful alliance with the Kingdom of God and his authority is made manifest by the bearer of grace, the Holy Spirit. Let us draw near to him who makes all things possible; who grants us peace beyond our understanding; and who prepares for us a feast and waits eagerly for our return.

The Greatest Day Ever

aster Sunday is the greatest day the world has ever known. And the Lutheran Herald takes this opportunity to share the Easter story, as recorded in the scriptures, with all our respected readers. Mary Magdalene was the first person to see Jesus after he had risen from the dead. After Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene, he saw two of his followers walking from Jerusalem to a village called Emmaus about seven miles away. He noticed that their faces were very sad, and he heard them discussing the news that the tomb of Jesus was empty and that no one knew where the body was. Jesus went up to them and asked, “What are you talking about?” They did not recognise Jesus. One of them, Cleopas, was a little annoyed and said “Do you not know about all the things that have happened in Jerusalem these past few days?” “What things?” Jesus asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” Cleopas replied with his voice rising. “He was a great prophet who taught about God with powerful words and amazing miracles. We believed that he was the Messiah who was going to save Israel. But the chief priests and our leaders conspired to have him arrested and sentenced to death by crucifixion. That was three days ago. Now some of our women have just returned from the tomb and reported that they could not find his body. They said they had seen an angel who told them that he was alive. Some of our companions went to the tomb and found the tomb empty just as the women had said. But they, too, could not find the body.” Then Jesus said to them, “Did you not know that all this was predicted by the prophets? The one God sent had to suffer before going up to heaven.” Then beginning with what Moses and all the prophets had written in the Old Testament of the Bible, he explained to them all that was written about himself. When they came to Emmaus, the two men urged Jesus to have dinner with them. At the table, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it and gave it to them. At that moment, they recognised him as Jesus. Then he disappeared from their sight!

They were startled by this and asked, “Did not our hearts glow with joy as he explained the Bible to us?” That same night, they hurried back to Jerusalem to report this to the other disciples. While they were talking, Jesus himself suddenly appeared and stood among them. He said, “Peace be with you.” They thought they were seeing a ghost, but Jesus calmed their fears. “Why are you frightened? Look at my hands and feet, This is really me! Touch me and see. Does a ghost have flesh and bones, as you see I have?” Then he told them, “This is what I said would happen. Everything that is written about me has been fulfilled.” Then Jesus opened their minds so that they could understand the Bible. The Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead so that repentance and forgiveness of sins in his name could be preached to people all over the world. Over a period of forty days, Jesus appeared to the disciples many times, including five hundred people at one time. Then he led them again to the Mount of Olives where he was taken up to heaven, and a cloud hid him from his friends’ sight. They watched Jesus disappear into the sky. Suddenly, two angels stood beside them and said, “Why do you look into the sky? This Jesus, who has gone up into heaven, will also come back to you from heaven.” The day Jesus rose from the dead is the greatest day the world has ever known. We call it Easter Sunday. In Memory of Bishop Bertil Envall (29th October 1909 â€“ 23rd November 2011) by the missionaries of the United Lutheran Church in America who worked among the ethnic Chinese, and the Tamil congregations led by the TELC and the Swedish mission in Malaya, with the intention of establishing a single Lutheran Church in Malaya.

BERTIL ENVALL was born the fourth of seven children in Annedal, Gothenburg, Sweden on the 29th of October, 1909. He attended the Latin Secondary School for nine years and intended to become an architect at the Chalmers University of Technology. He had to learn Greek later when he chose to apply to the Department of Theology in Sweden. As a young adult, he felt the calling to serve God in mission work overseas. He obeyed Jesusâ€™ Great Commission to his disciples as per Matthew 28:18-20.

Despite agreeing on organisation and stewardship in general, disagreements arose as regards the form of church government for the proposed national church. While the Swedish mission and the Tamil Lutherans were partial to an episcopal polity, it was not accepted by the representatives of the American mission who felt that the local Chinese Lutherans would not be familiar with that form of government. There were also disagreements on the nature of apostolic succession as well as the significant differences in culture, language and origins between the Tamils and the Chinese, the former consisting mainly of established Tamil Lutheran families while the latter consisting mainly of congregations of young individual Chinese who were first-generation Christians.

He married Ingefrid Rhedin on October 7, 1937 and sailed for India to work in the Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church (TELC) in Tranquebar. He studied Indian culture and religion for two years to familiarise himself with the Indian people. During the period 1937-53, Bertil and Ingefrid worked in India as missionaries sent out by the Church of Sweden Mission (CSM) in collaboration with the TELC. His 7 children were born during this period. During World War II, important management tasks for mission and church were put on Bertil. After some years as Vicar in the Foss congregation and as Chairman of the Gothenburg Diocese Mission Council, Bertil, in the early 1960s, got an invitation to investigate the feasibility of building a Lutheran Church in Malaya. There were Lutheran congregations with a South Indian background who had requested for help. Bertil was instrumental in initiating a consultative dialogue between the congregations established

As a result, two Lutheran church bodies were established in Malaya. The TELC districts in Malaya were reconstituted as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malaysia and Singapore (ELCMS) on the 13th of August 1962 while the mainly Chinese congregations of the American Mission were organised as the Lutheran Church in Malaya (later renamed the Lutheran Church in Malaysia and Singapore) a year later on 3rd August 1963. 10

On the 29th of May 1966, Bertil Envall was consecrated in Zion Church in Kuala Lumpur. He became the first Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malaysia. The consecration was conducted by the Indian Bishop of Tranquebar, Rajah Manikam, assisted by Bishop Bo Giertz, Bishop of Gothenburg and Bishop Roland Koh, the Anglican Bishop from Jesselton, North Borneo.

After his pioneering work, Bishop Envall retired in 1977. The Church has since elected 3 indigenous Bishops and is today growing from strength to strength. The Bishop’s missionary commitment continued in Gothenburg in the 1980s through the “I found it” campaign and the “Disciple School.” Bishop Emeritus Envall and Biskopina Emeritus Ingefrid started the Disciple Centre in Torestorp when he

Bishop Envall started his assignment to build a church with determination. He faced various challenges including coming up with the constitution, the setting up of congregations, and purchasing church buildings which would form the framework of church life and ministry. Pastors and deacons were prioritised and the Bishop devoted great care to this area. With limited financial resources, the functioning of divine worship services and other services had to be maintained. The term “tentmaker pastor” (referring to the Apostle Paul’s occupation) was taken up and developed by calling suitable persons to undergo advanced theological courses. These Pastors attended to their secular occupations after they were ordained. With great zeal, the Bishop also drove the development of the Church’s diakonia ministry in the forms of education for young people and educational/social work among children, adolescents and families. Added to this was also the significant contributions that were made for the creation of a treatment centre for epileptic children and a vocational school for young people who dropped out of school. The broad range of the Bishop’s talents were reflected in these ministries. Bishop Envall, with great dedication, commitment and tirelessness took responsibility for both the material and spiritual development of the Church. His practical side, with both feet on the ground, was combined with a deep piety and sincerity in preaching. He enjoyed confidence, respect and love from the people of the Church.

This was just days after he had expressed his desire to “go home”, meaning to his heavenly home. Bishop Envall was a pious man who was eager to spread the good news. He prayed and preached God’s wonderful deeds in an authoritative manner. We thank God for his faithfulness, commitment and inspired leadership to the ELCM. We express our heartfelt condolences to Emeritus Ingefrid Biskopina and Birgitta, Ambjom and Agneta, Gunnemar and Birgitta, Cecilia, Ulfhild, Elis and Kerstin. Surely this great leader will be remembered by members of the ELCM for many years to come.

ELCM New Outreach Ministries Taman Sentosa Lutheran Outreach, Klang By the grace of God, Taman Sentosa Lutheran Outreach was established in June 2010. This ministry is efficiently run by Bro. Easupillay under the able supervision of Rev. G. Sritharan, the Pastor-in-Charge of Holy Cross Lutheran Congregation. The Taman Sentosa Lutheran Outreach which was dedicated by Bishop Dr. Solomon Rajah on the 18th of March, 2012 is a fast-growing outreach with 25 to 30 active members. The outreach has also started a Sunday School run by 2 teachers and attended by 15 children.

On Saturday, the 7th of January, 2012, the youths of Kluang Lutheran Congregation, under the supervision of Rev. Anbunathan Samuel, commenced their outreach ministry among the Orang Asli in Kampung Belanjau. The youths are prayerfully implementing the following action plan for this ministry:

The Rasah Lutheran Outreach commenced operations on the 8th of January 2012 under the dedicated leadership of Rev. Steven Lawrence. The outreach caters for the spiritual welfare of about 20 souls. On Saturdays, about 15 children participate in the children’s ministry while about 5 youths come together for youth fellowship. The Divine Worship Service is held every Sunday morning commencing 9.00 am.

ELCM Mission Centre, India

The Kinrara Lutheran Outreach is a ministry of the Zion Cathedral Lutheran Congregation under the experienced oversight of Rev. David Devapirian. Every Sunday,commencing 5.30 pm, 25 souls come together for worship. Other activities include cell group meetings, every Wednesday, participated by about 15 people and children’s ministry, every Saturday, attended by 40 children. The ELCM Mission Centre in Maniyarakundam, Chinna Kalarayan Hills, Tamil Nadu, India is the ELCM’s first international mission ministry. Rev. Dr. Andrew Samraj, an expatriate ELCM pastor who has worked with the ELCM in Malaysia and his wife Mrs. Ranjini Florence are managing this centre with full dedication and commitment. Among the activities being conducted by the centre include regular visits to the surrounding villages and meeting contacts, doorto-door evangelism, field training for interested youths, house prayer fellowships in Salem, bible study at Mettupatti, sponsoring poor youths for education (3 students at present) and children’s ministry. Future plans of the ELCM Mission Centre include purchasing a plot of land for the centre estimated to cost RM 12, 000.00. ELCM Events / News Updates A one-day Southern District Women’s Forum was held on the 7th of February, 2012 at the Resurrection Lutheran Congregation, Port Dickson. About 40 women and Pastors from various churches in the Southern District participated in this forum that challenged each women to actively participate in a family-centered mission.

The newly-appointed Bethany Home Management Committee members after their first meeting on 12th January 2012 at Bethany Home, Hutan Melintang. The Central District Pastors’ Fellowship organised a prayer meeting in the Lutheran Hall on the 14th of January, 2012 to usher in the new year. Bro. G.M.M Muthu of the Methodist Church was the guest speaker at this event which was attended by about 60 members from the various congregations in the Central District.

A one-day meeting between the Diocesan Council and the various Diocesan committees was held in the Lutheran Hall on Saturday the 11th of February, 2012. Reports from all the Diocesan committees were presented and plans for the triennium 2012 – 2014 were finalised. The ELCM Diocesan Pastors’ Conference was held on the 14th of February, 2012 from 9.00am – 2.00pm in the Lutheran Hall. In addition to the presentation of reports for 2011 and plans for 2012, the highlight of the conference was the launching of the Diocesan “Year of Outreach” Campaign 2012 by the Bishop.

The Zion Cathedral Women’s Fellowship conducted a half-day Lent retreat on the 31st of March, 2012 at the Diocesen Seminar Room, Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur.

The ELCM Sunday School Teachers’ Training was held from the 3rd of February to the 5th of February 2012 at the Archdiocese Pastoral Centre, Jalan Pudu, Kuala Lumpur. The training was attended by 35 Sunday School teachers.

The ELCM Deaconess Training Programme was held on the 10th of March, 2012 in Good Hope Lutheran Congregation.

First Symposium on Lutheran Theology and the Inauguration of the Lutheran Study Centre from March 7 to 9, 2012 was held at Seminari Theoloji Sabah (STS), Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The symposium, held under the theme “LAW AND GOSPEL: LEARNING TO DISCERN THE LUTHERAN WAY OF THE RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD” was attended by about 50 bishops and pastors from the various Lutheran churches in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia including several wellknown professors from Australia, Germany and Indonesia.

The Diocesan Junior Work Committee organised a Basic & Advanced Leadership Course for 50 participants at the Port Dickson Lutheran Centre from the 16th to the 18th of March, 2012. The highlight of the course was a presentation on the Ministry of ELCM Junior Work by Bishop Dr. Solomon Rajah. Congregations who wish to start a Junior Work Ministry are requested to contact Bro. Kalaimuthu is now a full-time first-year student at Seminari Theoloji Malaysia (STM) pursuing a Master of Theology (MTh) degree. Rev. Kalaimuthu is currently serving the Matang Lutheran Congregation. The new building of the Labis Lutheran Congregation will be dedicated to the glory of God by the Bishop on Saturday, the 26th of May, 2012. Please contact Rev. K. Jeffrey Solomon, 23, a member of Good Hope Lutheran Congregation, joined Seminari Theoloji Malaysia (STM) in January 2012. He is currently a first-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Divinity (BD) degree. Jeffrey is a qualified and skilled physiotherapist who received God’s call to full-time ministry while working in his secular job. Cheras Lutheran Congregation (CLC) will be organising a Fund - Raising Dinner and Musical Nite at Banquet Hall, Universiti Putra Malaysia on Saturday, 28th April, 2012 to raise funds toward the needs of their congregation. CLC is aiming to raise funds to purchase a van and to cover the operational and management costs of Rumah Chrestus, a home for abused/neglected children under their care located in Taman Cuepacs. ELCM Diakonia Ministries Zion Lutheran Feed the Poor Ministry The welfare committee of the Zion Lutheran Congregation which comprises 10 volunteers meets every Sunday from 9.30am to 1.30pm at the parking lot of Zion Cathedral to carry out this noble ministry. About 200 food boxes are distributed to the waiting poor in addition to another 70 to the poor who are found in the various alleys of Brickfields. Old clothes are also distributed to the needy and provisions given to some refugees living in the surrounding area. ELCM Women’s Care and Counselling Centre ELCM Women’s Care and Counselling Centre, Port Klang under the leadership of Holy Cross Lutheran Congregation is moving ahead confidently and with full commitment to fulfill its objectives of providing care and assistance to women in need. The activities of the centre include organising briefing and presentations about the centre, helping single pregnant girls to give away their babies for adoption, conducting skills training for needy women, assisting poor elderly ladies to obtain welfare grants from the government, facilitating the provisions of groceries to poor families, organising a medical camp and helping unemployed women to obtain stable jobs.
