ABOUT THE EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP COUNCIL The Executive Leadership Council (ELC) is a national organization comprising of current and former black CEOs and senior executives at Fortune 1000 and Global 500 companies. For 32 years, The ELC has worked to build an inclusive business leadership pipeline. We empower black corporate leaders to make significant and impactful contributions in the global marketplace and their communities.

In 2012, The ELC launched its strategic goals to increase the number of black executives serving in CEO positions and those one and two levels below by a net addition of at least one per Fortune 1000 and Global 500 company, and to increase the number of seats held by black executives on the boards of publicly traded companies by 200. These aspirations will help advance the innovation and competitiveness of corporations, ensuring the longterm success of communities by bringing diverse thinking to the decision-making table.

The ELC’s charitable efforts focus on improving local communities and helping disadvantaged groups within the broader society. The work supports education programs and provides scholarships to deserving students interested in business and corporate careers.

UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS The mission of The ELC’s Scholarship Programs is to build a pipeline of black corporate talent by supporting the academic achievement and development of black undergraduate and graduate students.

The ELC offers five undergraduate scholarship programs: • three are designed for students pursuing business degrees, • one is designed for students currently enrolled in a mechanical or chemical engineering program, • and one is designed for students pursuing degrees in business, insurance and risk management, or a related field.

Scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, and commitment to community service. Additionally, scholarship recipients receive exposure and networking opportunities with ELC members through participation in The ELC’s Honors Symposium.

LETTER FROM A FORMER ELC SCHOLAR Welcome ELC Scholars!

Congratulations on your selection as 2019 Scholars and welcome to the family! You have an unparalleled week of experiences ahead of you.

The people you will meet, and the insights they provide will be an invaluable resource.

During my year, we met with the chairman of the NBA, Adam Silver, spoke with one of the few black CEO’s in the United States, Kenneth Chenault, and got a mini concert from John Legend at the gala. And just in general, being in rooms full of so much black excellence was so inspiring and infectious.

But, just like anything else, the experience will only be as impactful as you choose to make it, so here’s a couple of tips to make sure you take full advantage.

Build Relationships This environment affords you the opportunity to build genuine relationships with successful business leaders. Take advantage of it. Step out of your comfort zone and introduce yourself to people. Do you research on the executives and companies that you’re meeting and ask engaging questions. And don’t forget to get to know your fellow scholars. Those relationships are just as, if not more important than the execs because those are the people you build with.

Stay In Contact For anybody you meet who you wish to stay in contact with, get their business card and follow up within 24 hours. Making connections is good, but sustaining meaningful relationships can be transformative for your career.

Be an Active Listener, Ask Questions & Take Notes Be engaged during the panels and presentations. Take notes on the insights and tips you receive. Ask questions and ensure you understand the speakers and implement their advice in your lives and share them with your peer!

Be Present & Have Fun! Most importantly, enjoy yourself! Yes, this trip requires a certain level of professionalism, but don’t forget to enjoy the moment as well. Enjoy the fruits of your labor and savor the experience and your week out of school!

2019 ALVARO L. MARTINS SCHOLARS Created in honor of The ELC’s founding member, the first president and CEO of The Council and an alumnus of Howard University, the Alvaro L. Martins scholarship is open to high achieving undergraduate black male students attending one of the nation’s top Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). A total of eighteen (18) scholarships are available. The top ten (10) scholarship awardees will receive a one-time scholarship in the amount of $8,000 each and $5,000 each for eight (8) additional scholars to assist with educational expenses for the 2019-2020 academic year.

Malcolm Allen is a senior in the School of Business Executive Leadership Honors Program at Texas Southern University, studying accounting. Malcolm is interested in both public and private accounting, as well as commercial banking. Malcolm feels like he can learn a lot from these different industries as well as apply them to his day to day lifestyle. On campus, Malcolm in heavily involved in different organizations where he serves as the president of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) and the vice president of the honor society Beta Alpha Psi. Malcolm is also a member of Habitat for Humanity, where he loves to help those in need. Raised in San Diego, California, Malcolm enjoys going to the beach, eating Mexican food, and traveling to different states.

Jaelen is interested in Investment Banking, Corporate Finance, and Asset Management as he aspires to start his own private equity firm in the future. Within the School of Business, Jaelen is heavily involved in the Howard University Finance & Investment Club and the 21st Century Advantage Program, where he serves as a management team leader. During his freshman year, he also served as the School of Business Freshman Council President. He has been on the executive board for three different on-campus organizations and does an immense amount of community service on and off campus. Zuri is an embodiment of the three attributes highlighted in his personal mission statement: problem-solver, hard-worker, and servant-leader. Raised in Hampton, Virginia, Zuri in his spare time enjoys going to church, working out, and socializing with friends and family.

Charles Hart is a junior within the dual degree engineering program at Morehouse College.

Currently at Morehouse Charles is studying applied physics but plans to soon transfer to Georgia Tech to finish this unique program in chemical engineering. Charles is interested in making a positive impact in the clean energy industry. He plans to obtain a graduate degree in chemical engineering and eventually making solar energy more efficient and widely available. His end career goal is to provide the continent of Africa with free energy harvested from the sun. On campus, Charles is heavily involved in the National Society of Black Engineers club. Along with being a full-time student, Charles works as a Mathematics tutor in his free time. Raised in Buffalo, New York, Charles in his spare time enjoys working out, playing basketball, and socializing with friends.

Steven is interested in various types of legal studies, particularly as they relate to entertainment and civil rights, and Management Consulting, since he feels both offer alternative perspectives on the business world and provide tools to have a direct impact on improving the welfare of his communities. On campus, Steven is currently a multi-event athlete for the Howard Men’s Track and Field team and leads strategy consulting teams for the Howard Global Tri-lateral MBA program. Previously, he served as a director on the School of Business student council and competed for the nationally ranked Howard University Mock Trial team. He also volunteers in numerous community service activities with the various organizations he’s involved in. Raised in Los Angeles, Steven in his spare time enjoys running/hurdling, discussing political and social trends, and discovering new experiences with friends and family.

Jacob Mosley is a sophomore at Morehouse College majoring in Business Finances with a minor in French. Jacob is interested in Public Wealth Management Advising and Investment Banking. He feels both will give him the opportunity to learn more about businesses and the different industries of Corporate America. This will allow him to have a direct and positive impact and enhance businesses in foreign countries. He is a Morehouse King Legacy Scholar, a Student Ambassador for the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), and a UNCF Koch Scholar. Jacob is an active member of Achieve Moore, which focuses on community service projects on the campuses of Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Clark Atlanta University as well in the city of Atlanta. He is a part of Morehouse Business Association which takes students from all three schools and help them better understand the business world. Jacob aims for high academic standards, community service, and leadership skills. Jacob has a cumulative grade point average of 3.81 and has recognition as a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society as well the honor roll and Dean’s List.

Teji Vega is from Teaneck, New Jersey and is a sophomore at Long Island University (LIU).

Teji is in the Dean Scholar Honors Program for business students and is majoring in business administration with a concentration in finance. Teji is interested in pursuing careers in human capital management, wealth management, and consulting. At LIU, Teji is an active member of the student-run Investment Fund, which invests and manages over $100,000, and the Black Student Union. He is a member of Phi Eta Sigma, a national scholastic honor society. Teji was a founding member of Cool Boys Read, promoting and encouraging reading for black and Latino boys in elementary and middle school.

In high school, he participated in business programs at the University of Pennsylvania, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Goldman Sachs, Mercy College, and Unilever. While doing this, he noticed that he was one of only three students in his school familiar with these experiences. Therefore, he started an organization called ParentMatterz, providing resources and mentorship to parents and students to help jump start their career development and help them find their passions. Teji is an avid sports fan, having played baseball player and martial arts, and is a musician.

This summer, Teji played saxophone in San Sebastian, Spain for multiple jazz festivals. Another fun fact about Teji is he was a contestant and winner on the TV game show, The Price is Right.

2019 ANN FUDGE SCHOLARS Named after the first woman chair of The ELC and former chairman and CEO of Young & Rubicam Brands, the Ann Fudge Scholarship is open to high achieving undergraduate black female students attending one of the nation’s top HBCUs. A total of eighteen (18) scholarships are available. The top ten (10) scholarship awardees will receive a one-time scholarship in the amount of $8,000 each and $5,000 each for eight (8) additional scholars to assist with educational expenses for the 2019-2020 academic year.

The Linde Engineers for Tomorrow Scholarship is open to high-achieving undergraduate minority students currently attending a four-year college or university and pursuing a mechanical or chemical engineering degree. 2019 NATIONWIDE’S FUTURE LEADERS SCHOLARS NAILAH REINE BARNES Spelman College

View resume on pg. 78 Nailah Reine Barnes is a sophomore at Spelman College where she is double majoring in international studies and French. Nailah believes that leading in the international business world with a humanitarian and altruistic approach will enable her to positively impact communities around the globe. Nailah is heavily involved in social justice and community service work both on and off campus. She volunteers at M. Agnes Jones Elementary School in the afterschool program several hours per week where she can mentor and tutor students in second through fifth grade. He desires to invest in stocks, pursue investment banking and asset/wealth management. Elon has a passion for helping others since high school where he spent time in Ghana building a compost toilet for a community there and has been able to keep up with that passion by teaching financial management at local Prince George’s County, Maryland middle schools. In addition, he is enrolled in a service-learning program where he spends up to 10 hours a week mentoring at risk-youth during his study abroad in the Dominican Republic this semester. His past experiences have been with CESD agency as an actor where he had the opportunity to develop his public speaking skills, gain collaboration experience, and improve his communication abilities. Elon spent his freshman summer working for Boeing doing contracts and accounts receivable and helped to create contract proposals and manage money in cash collections. VOLUNTEER Global Leadership Adventures, Ghana, Africa May - August 2015  Supervised team of 14, managed schedules, daily priorities, and safety guidelines to build compost toilets in impoverished communities  Acted as project manager to ensure peers met deadlines for project  Created 3 compost toilets which served to decrease rates of typhoid and yellow fever in communities from about 40% down to less than 2% while also providing a mineral source for farming
