Spain Turned the Prediction into Glory

B

efore the 2026 World Cup began, statistical models identified Spain as the leading favorite to win the title. One month later, La Roja confirmed those predictions by defeating Argentina 1–0 in a dramatic final and claiming the second World Cup trophy in its history.

The team led by Luis de la Fuente built its success through possession, high pressing, and an almost impenetrable defense. Spain conceded only one goal in eight matches and finished the tournament undefeated, proving that its status as favorite did not depend solely on the talent of stars such as Lamine Yamal, Rodri, or Dani Olmo, but also on a perfectly established collective system. The level of difficulty increased considerably during the knockout rounds. La Roja defeated Portugal 1–0 in the round of 16, beat Belgium 2–1 in the quarterfinals, and eliminated France 2–0 in the semifinals. Each match presented a different challenge: containing Portugal’s experience, surviving Belgium’s intensity, and neutralizing France’s speed and attacking power. However, the most difficult stage was the final against Argentina. The defending champion resisted throughout the 90 minutes, while Emiliano Martínez repeatedly denied Spain a goal. The match went into extra time, where Ferran Torres stepped up in the 105th minute to score the goal that secured the championship. Spain finished with 20 shots, compared with only two from Argentina. The victory confirmed that the data had been correct, but the World Cup was not won through percentages. Spain had to demonstrate character, patience, and mental strength to transform a prediction into a second star.

ESPAÑA CONVIRTIÓ EL PRONÓSTICO EN GLORIA

A

IMMIGRATION POLICIES LEAVE LATINO FAMILIES LIVING IN FEAR

MIGRACION ARRINCONA A FAMILIAS LATINAS BAJO LA SOMBRA DEL MIEDO

The economic impact is equally severe. Enforcement operations targeting workplaces such as farms, factories, construction sites, and service industries have led to worker absences, resignations, and significant financial losses. For many households, the possibility of losing their primary source of income has become an ever-present threat.

In many mixed-status households, where undocumented parents live with U.S.-citizen children, the fear of deportation has dramatically altered everyday life. Parents avoid leaving their homes, children miss school, and many individuals postpone medical appointments out of concern that they could be detained. What was once a normal routine has become a source of anxiety for countless Hispanic families.

Behind the statistics lies an even more heartbreaking reality: family separation. Children affected by immigration enforcement often experience intense stress, anxiety, and emotional distress. Mental health experts warn that the psychological consequences could last for years, shaping an entire generation growing up under the fear of losing a parent. As immigration enforcement efforts continue, concern is mounting over the lasting social, economic, and emotional toll these policies are taking on Latino communities throughout the country. 18

Corresponsal: Vannesa Plata

A Tribute to Gabriel Vargas, Creator of:

La Familia Burrón: A Reflection of the Mexican Neighborhood

T

alking about La Familia Burrón is like opening a window into the folklore, humor, and ingenuity of everyday Mexican life. Created by Gabriel Vargas in 1948, this comic series not only entertained generations of readers but also provided a heartfelt portrait of urban life for more than seven decades.

The story follows Regino Burrón, owner of the “El Rizo de Oro” barbershop, and his wife Borola Tacuche, an impulsive, dream-filled woman and the undisputed queen of chaos, who constantly finds herself in outrageous situations alongside their children, Regino and Macuca. Together, they live in a tenement building in the fictional Tepito neighborhood, inspired by a real, vibrant, chaotic, and often absurd Mexico City. Gabriel Vargas, who began drawing professionally at the age of 13, became a graphic chronicler of Mexican society. He captured the language of the streets, popular slang, double entendres, and the colorful conversations heard in markets and public squares. His work became a massive cultural phenomenon, selling more than 500,000 copies per week and earning recognition as one of the longest-running comic series in the world, with more than 60 years of continuous publication. Although the series ceased publication in 2009, and Vargas received Mexico’s National Prize for Sciences and Arts in 2013, La Familia Burrón remains deeply embedded in the Mexican cultural imagination. Its humor and authentic portrayal of everyday life continue to inspire academic studies, exhibitions, and reprints, preserving the image of a Mexico that once was—and, in many ways, still is.

En honor a Gabriel Vargas creador de:

La Familia Burrón: El Reflejo del Barrio Mexicano

H
