I Hope everyone has enjoyed the months of July and August either with family or just lazing around the pool with the odd Gin and Tonic. I have enjoyed my pool this year dipping in and out trying to keep cool it has been a little hot and humid this year.

The Committee will be back and active from the 2nd September to arrange trips and events for the forth coming months. We are planning our two favourite events Cheese and Wine and the Film night for the months of October and November.

Our monthly meeting is on Monday the 7th September I hope to see lots of you there.

JULY MEETING

7pm Monday 6th July 2015, time and date of the monthly El-Valle meeting and featuring the El-Valle's very own Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman played by yours truly and Peter Goreham.

First things first though and at 7.35pm Sue opened the meeting and quickly handed over to Jane who gave the usual run through of upcoming social events, all of which can be booked at the monthly meetings, and at Meson Sarah on a Friday morning from 11.30 to 12.30.

Details of all activities can be found in the Newsletter or on-line at the El-Valle web site.

At 7.45pm a short break was called for the 70 plus members to book social events, buy tickets for the cash box and to recharge their glasses prior to the El-Valle edition of the popular TV quiz show "Pointless" No expense had been spared in putting on the production and this was clearly evident in the coveted Pointless Trophy's waiting for the nights winners and the "descending Pointless scoring machine" designed and constructed by Peter/Richard/Goreham/ Osman!!!!!!!

For the show to work we needed four couples to take part and right up

until start time there were concerns that we might fall short in this but eventually we had our volunteers/press ganged couples. Many thanks to Neil and Trevor, (their wives both declined to appear) Elaine and Jeanette, Ian and Les, and Vanessa and Anne.

On the assumption that most people will know the shows format all I will say on this is that we followed the TV version as closely as possible, losing one couple each round until we had our finalists, Ian and Les, who went on to play for the "Coveted Pointless Trophy" and a token cash prize along with a bottle of wine for every contestant.

It should be pointed out that one couple, Elaine/Jeanette, both managed an elusive pointless answer in the same round but sadly they were later eliminated.

In the final round Ian and Les chose the category "Movies, The Oscars" and had to give the name of three films that had won six or more Oscars up to 2009. The answers they gave were all correct, two of them with very low scores but the third answer "Lord of the Rings" was pointless winning them the token cash prize to go with their "Coveted Pointless Trophy" each.

After the quiz five numbers were drawn for the cash box but unfortunately there were no winners.

All that remains are the thanks to the committee for the evening and to the 70 plus members supporting the event and especially to Peter Goreham for his input into the "Pointless" event, both in his presence on stage and the time and effort he put into the design and construction of the props" without which the event would not have been the success it seemed .

La vinuela photographic club

Did you recognise the moving walkway featured in July’s edition? It’s the one installed at the Rincon de la Victoria shopping centre (Carrefour), leading to and from the underground car park.

June’s challenge of “in the style of” Brassai proved to be a most difficult one, hence only ten entries this month. The following image is a true representation of Brassai’s work.

Back to the present day in July. “Framing” a technique to enhance an image by using windows, doorways, nature etc, as a framework to a subject.

Interested in photography? Why not come and join us, we are a friendly group of people of differing abilities from novice to the more proficient, it’s all about learning from each other, but more importantly, enjoying photography.

We meet on the first Thursday of the month (10.30am), currently at Restaurante La Era in Puente Don Manuel. If you are interested, contact us, leaving your contact details at lakevinuelaphotoclub@gmail.com .

Picnic in the park

Picnic in the Park with Salsa (Salsa being the Dance not the sauce) although having said that I suppose the salsa dance can be described as saucy!!!!!!!!

Wednesday 15th July at 7.30pm saw 53 members/guests of the El-Valle gather at the picnic area near the ViĂąuela sports ground and above the EmbalsĂŠ.

It was a very warm evening and when I arrived various committee members were hard at work setting things up for lighting and sound systems.

Everyone chose their tables or set up their own and we were soon called out to go choose our food.

Anita and Owen were responsible for providing/preparing the food and there was a wide range of quiche/salad/vegetables/snacks etc and judging from the size of the plates coming away from the service table everyone was impressed with the offerings.

I certainly thought that Anita and Owen helped by their friend Carol provided a superb picnic.

After the food it was Salsa time and Owen, helped by Anita, soon had a gathering of picnickers following his every move, some with more success than others!!!!! but who am I to say, I did not even get up.

It was a very successful evening; everyone seemed to be having fun.

Apart from the salsa a giant Jenga set had been brought along and this was providing amusement along

People began to drift away from 11'ish but even when the generator was finally turned off and the lights went out a hard core of twelve or so of us stayed in candlelight until 1a.m. before calling a night and wending our way home.

A picnic might sound like a simple affair to organise but believe me you could tell it wasn't and a lot of work went into making it a success so thanks to all concerned and of course Anita and Owen.

Lake Viñuela Photographic Club. by Doug Poplett “Framing” was July’s task to get creative with the camera. We often put the photos we take into frames as a way of displaying and drawing attention to our favourite photos, but there is another type of framing that you can do as you’re taking your shots that can be just as effective. Framing is compositional technique of drawing attention to the subject of your image.

This image is an example of the technique, the two trees and the grass creating a “frame” to the tower.

Interested in photography? Why not come and join us, we are a friendly group of people of differing abilities from novice to the more proficient, it’s all about learning from each other, but more importantly, enjoying photography.

El valle august walk There may be no El-Valle monthly meeting in August but the monthly walk goes on regardless and on the second Thursday of the month, 13/8/15 twenty three walkers gathered at Pepe Molino’s, Almayate to take part in the walk routed by Barry and Jan. A show of hands quickly established that all twenty three would be eating following the walk.

Despite the walk starting at 7pm it was still very warm but we were helped by a pleasant cooling breeze and our guides for the evening had carefully routed the walk to avoid any significant ascents and I think I would be right in saying that the whole walk never achieved more that 50 metres above sea level.

We followed broad tracks through the country side and through arable areas all along the coast near to Almayate and Torre del Mar.

At the end of the walk we all dined at Pepe Molinos and chose individually from their extensive and fairly priced menu.

It was turned 11pm before most people started for home and the whole evening was enjoyed by all.

July/august quad report by jackie & roger frewin Phew! It’s been a hot summer. Most of the group have been away, escaping the heat, and others have suffered from quad problems so generally there have been very few of us attending the trips recently. Sadly, we lost our buggy driver George, to pancreatic cancer, in June. We will all miss him and Kristina, who is returning to Sweden to be closer to her family.

At the beginning of July our routes were still decked with some brightly coloured flowers, primarily the rich pink Oleander, nourished in the river beds that now appeared to be dry but nevertheless must have remained wet underground. On occasions when the participants have had fewer commitments the duration of our trips has stretched considerably longer than the norm.

One such trip saw just three quads leave Trapiche, and climb the steep concrete track from there up onto the ridge with views of La Maroma and the Sierra de Tejeda, Embalse de La Vinuela and the sea. Spectacular! The fragrances along the route were many and varied but I couldn’t identify them all. The combination of jasmine, citrus and fig trees was truly wonderful. Our excursion took us along familiar tracks, some of them particularly rugged, to Canillas de Albaida where we enjoyed a delightful menu del dia at a very reasonable price.

After a leisurely lunch stop we proceeded to Salares, along well-maintained trails and partook in more refreshments before embarking on our return journey. This took us along the roadway back to Canillas de Albaida then, for a short stretch, along the same tracks as earlier but we branched off above Daimalos to follow a less arduous track that led us back towards home. The total trip time was five and a half hours but was greatly enjoyed by us all.

When we next ventured out the temperatures had started to soar. Both the quad bikes and their riders suffered in the extreme heat so we had to abandon any further trips until the weather cooled down a bit.

So, finally …………. a bit of respite from the extreme heat but it was still rather hot when 4 quads ventured out on an old but favourite route. We left Puente and made our way to bar Ortega for refreshments. From there we travelled cross-country up to Comares then dropped down into the river bed, which was completely dry and very dusty at this point. There was still no sign of any water when we left the river bed at Benamargosa and stopped for more much needed refreshment. We left Benamargosa and travelled steeply up towards Los Romanes and another welcome drink at El Charco quenched our thirst before the group parted to go their own separate ways home. All in all a very pleasant trip without incident, despite the heat.

Unfortunately, for various reasons the number in the group has dropped quite significantly in recent months so it would be especially nice just now to see some new faces.
