Welcome to your February Newsletter, it just seems like yesterday I was writing the January one! At least the nights are getting lighter now and hopefully it will start to warm up as well. Last year it was brought to our attention that some people had been to more than two meetings and had not joined the Asociacion, as you know, we welcome visitors and encourage any member to bring their friends along, however we would ask that after two visits they consider becoming members, unless of course they are family or
friends visiting from the UK. It is only fair to our members who pay their fees every year. In order to monitor this we have decided to introduce a visitors book which we would ask you to ensure any friends or family sign when they come to our meetings, it will be located just inside the meeting room on the desk on the left as you come in. Thank you. This month we will also be handing out a short survey regarding the future direction of the Asociacion, we would very much like your input as to how you see future
meetings/events/trips etc. I would ask you to please take a few minutes to complete this during the meeting and hand back to a committee member. These survey forms will also be available to any member during February and March, just ask a committee member. We will hope to publish the results in April or May when we have had time to collate all the responses. Thank you to Philip Paviour for his suggestion.

It was a cold and miserable evening when the first El Valle meeting of 2018 was

held on 8th January and was attended by a disappointing 23 members, 8 of which were committee members! The poor turnout was probably due to the various viruses that have been doing the rounds, combined with the cold night that kept people indoors.

At this point Jason asked the members to try CPR on the mannequins he had brought with him. Nearly all the members attempted the CPR and Rescue Breaths (kiss of life) and found it quite difficult.
Sue opened the meeting by wishing all present a happy and healthy 2018 and also welcomed two new members to the meeting.
Jason runs First Aid courses both in Viñuela and in the UK, more information about him can be found on www.sclfirstaidtrainingspain. es To increase chances of survival it was vital that there was Early recognition; Telephone for help; Start CPR & Defib; And the patient receives advanced medical care. After the demonstration there was a question and answer session after which members were invited to purchase leaflets on First Aid Jason had brought to the meeting.
After running through the usual forthcoming events a short break was called before Sue introduced the Guest Speaker for the evening, Jason Bland.
Sue then thanked Jason for coming and providing such a comprehensive demonstration.
Jason was to give a talk and demonstration on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Jason began by running through some facts and figures for us. One in nine men and one in thirty women will suffer from Sudden Cardiac Arrest before they reach 60! Only 5% will survive without immediate treatment, CPR can double their chance of survival. Effective CPR within 5 minutes of a cardiac arrest and a defibrillator is used increases the chances of survival. Sudden Cardiac Arrest is different from a Heart Attack, but, if in doubt, start CPR, you won’t do the patient any harm if it’s not a Cardiac Arrest.

It was then time for the box, but after five attempts there was no winner and the prize fund will roll over to February’s meeting. Sue closed the meeting and made a request for members to join the committee as two members were stepping down this year. She then thanked the members and committee members for coming out on such a cold night.

Led by Rubi and Jane Frost. Walk will be out of Guaro, just north of Periana, start at the Bar/Restaurant in the village and after at the restaurant. 11:00

january walk BY ALAN IMPEY Eleven a.m. on the eleventh January 2018 and the first El-Valle walk of the New Year!!! The honour of routing and leading the first walk of 2018 fell to Mike and Frances and they had chosen the hill top pueblo of Comares as the starting point. Seventeen walkers turned up on a bright but breezy day and after confirming numbers for the meal after the walk off we went initially heading back out of the pueblo, in fact we were not to enter the pueblo proper at any stage of the walk.
We soon left the tarmac and made our way along a narrow path that contoured round the hill side high above the road down to our left. After some fifteen minutes we arrived at the junction with a wide track and after everyone had caught up we set off right and immediately began dropping down into the valley. At all points of the walk we were aware of the pueblo up above on our right and the lower we went
more than one comment was made, "we have to go up again"
Although it was a bright day it was a touch on the cool side and the breeze was there constantly but in reality it was ideal walking weather. We continued walking clockwise around the pueblo now very high above us and eventually passed directly below the zip wire that many of us had experienced earlier. It was soon time to begin climbing back up to Comares but with frequent breaks we all managed to arrive back at the edge of the pueblo and to make our way to the restaurant again at the pueblo edge for a menu del dĂa that seemed to go down well with everyone. Facts and Figures; Length 5.83kms Start Height 670mtrs Total Time 1hr 40min Moving Time 1hr 30min Stopped Time 10min Ave. speed 3.5km per hour. Thanks to Mike and Frances for their efforts and a reminder that the next walk is on Thursday 8th February with a start close to Nerja and led by yours truly and "she who must be obeyed"
Petanque by alan impey Tuesday 23rd January and time for the El-Valle 2018 petanque tournament!!!!!! Meeting time was 1030am at the petanque courts at the end of Torre del Mar prom!!!! The organiser and El-Valle treasurer, Chris Wishart, explained the format of the tournament and he had divided the players into two leagues and each league consisted of four teams of three players.
The teams in each league played each other and the first team to reach ten points was the winner. All scores were recorded, winning and losing teams, and at the end of each leagues three games the two teams with highest combined scores from their three games played each in the final.
The scores of every game were recorded as it was conceivable that two teams from the same league could be highest scorers. As it turned out, one team from each league scored the maximum 30 points, remaining unbeaten in their league games. The stage was set and the two teams, Pauline, John and Judy, captained by Pauline and Yours truly, Shirley and Ian, captained by Yours truly began the race to be first to eight and win the tournament. It started badly for Yours truly's team and we quickly fell behind but rallied, albeit too late, to narrowly loose to Pauline and her team!!!! After the tournament it was on to Tannit for a menu del dĂa and the presentation of the runners up prizes and the winners prizes.

The key way to watch TV via the Internet is to find a Host. This is a company that will provide the TV channels in the country in which you are living. Not a remote source in another country you don't know the location of. Sat.Co uses a local provider on the South coast of Spain. Most of the manufactures producing new models for 2018 are not putting SCART connectors on them. The same goes if you are buying a new DVD player buy it with the HDMI sockets. By the way do you
know what HDMI stands for? Well it must have been an American because it stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface!!!! In early January the Spanish TV service introduced some new channels in some regions. So it may be a good idea to re tune your on board digital decoder in you TV if you have not done it for a while. Give your remote controls a birthday. Give them a good clean with an old dry toothbrush change the batteries stick a date label on to show when you changed them. Why not put them in a small plastic bag. They will still work honest.

5 unwaxed lemons 750ml bottle vodka (does not have to be expensive type) 200g sugar 450ml water METHOD Soak lemons in cold water for 1 hour, drain and dry Peel zest from lemons and put in the bottle of vodka Shake well, and shake daily. Place bottle in cool dark cupboard for 1 MONTH After 1 month, make a clear syrup with sugar and water and when cool add to strained lemon vodka. (Strain through muslin or coffee filter) Leave for 1 week before drinking
EL VALLE TRIP TO MURCIA AND SURROUNDING AREAS 14 MAY 2018 Departure at 7.00 hours from La Viñuela to Lorca. Short stops en route for breakfast. Arrival in Lorca at 12.00 p.m., a city declared Historic-Artistic Complex and called "the baroque city" for the important monumental legacy that houses its historical centre belonging to this style. We will have a guided tour of 2 hours approx. to see the most characteristic of the city. Free time for lunch. Then, depart to Murcia, arrival to the Hotel and distribution of rooms.
15 MAY 2018 - VISIT MURCIA Breakfast included in the hotel and departure to visit the city of Murcia with local guide, city with historical street that have kept the names of the guilds that occupied them, such as Platería, Trapería and Vidrieros. The square of Cardinal Belluga concentrates the two architectural jewels of the city: The Episcopal Palace (entrance included) and the Cathedral.
