His time was 17:15 minutes in the 5K race, competing against runners from some bigger schools, coach Duane Sperle said. Driesen has been in cross country since his freshman year, and was part of a team at state last year. Classmate Grant Schouten was seventh, in 17:37. Also on the boys team are juniors William Eilts and Craig Huls. For the girls’ race, the Falcons were led by senior Kaitlyn Rehder’s 10th place and junior Madison Musilek was right behind in 16:19. The girls squad finished a strong fifth behind Sioux City East, Sioux City North, Unity Christian and Heelan. Unity Christian could be the team to beat in the Girls’ Division, which has a full team from West Sioux. Also on the squad are senior Bobbi McManaman, juniors Tristin Bloyer, Alex Lynott, freshmen Brooke McManaman, Sonya Topete and Dana Weerheim. Conference battle 3 games to 1. The host Falcons, with a large crowd watching, beat the Westerners 21-25, 25-15, 25-18, 27-25 Sept. 9. A-W had won the football game between the two rivals. “It was a big win for us, because we have Sgt. Bluffs next, and they are expected to be one of the best teams in the conference,” said W-S head coach Sherri Reinking. The Falcons (5-1) and their fans were able to use their special ace, or non-returned serve, often in the four games. One such hit found its way to the netting high above the West Sioux volleyball court. Senior Marissa Van Driel, junior Signe Porter, senior Rachel Weerheim were all factors at the net for the winners, as well as setter junior Samantha Engleman. “We shot ourselves in the foot at times, but Porter did a great job when we were down 24-21 in the fourth game. Engleman distributed the ball well. We tried to hit around their talented front row (led by Karly Groon), who got her hands on the ball,” Reinking said. The emotions were running high, as the Westerners took game one, 25-21. “It is always nice to get a win over Akron,” Weerheim said. “I was looking forward to this one because the girls said this was a big rivalry,” new A-W head coach Megan Freeman said.

Freeman said she was pleased that the Westerners (1-1) were able to win many of the longer points. The visitors dominated early in game one, 15-7 on a service ace by junior Kaylee Hughes. The Falcons rallied to a tie at 18-18 while Weerheim served, but the Westerners regrouped behind Alison Kusler, Groon and Hughes’ serves. W-S jumped to an 18-8 lead in game two, seizing momentum with a quick-strike offense, and going on to win 25-15 to even the match. The two teams battled to a 10-10 tie in pivotal game three before the Falcons built up a three-point lead. A-W rallied from five points down to a twopoint deficit, 17-15, but the Falcons were able to re-establish a five-point lead at 22-17 and held on from there. Game four saw a determined Westerners team bolt to a 6-0 lead. A-W still led 17-10, and led 23-18, two points from a win, but the Falcons were able to stage a huge rally. The Falcons, with the win, bounced back from a conference loss to Hinton in the league opener. A-W hosted Hinton Sept. 16, before returning to Hawarden to compete in the West Sioux tourney Sept. 20.
