Barb and Lyle Ostermyer of rural Akron create a scarecrow each year for the Great Akron Scarecrow Festival & Contest. This is their 2007 masterpiece. Do you have one? There is still time to enter.
Spell-riffic scarecrow is just one of many to be at festival Saturday By Julie Ann Madden From her pink protractor smile and yellow sponge bow tie to her legs, arms and toes made of alphabet blocks, she’s a pretty special scarecrow. The blocks which make up her arms, legs and toes can be rotated to make different words. For instance, her legs can say “Hello Akron” and her arms can spell “Crow” and “Bird” or “Fall Ball” -- there’s dozens of letter combinations passersby can create at the 2007 Great Akron Scarecrow Festival & Contest with this special scarecrow made by Lyle and Barb Ostermyer of rural Akron. The blocks and other wooden parts are made from lumber salvaged from their 1915 barn which blew down in a storm last year. Originally, they thought of leav-
ing the scarecrow with just that “old wood look” but soon they let their imaginations take over. “Lyle came up with the idea of blocks,” said Barb, “and I came up with the idea for letters on the blocks.” This lady scarecrow’s body is actually chalk board “message centers” and her fingers are pieces of chalk -- just waiting for a child (of any age) to use to spell words using the blocks or for doodling or adding 2 + 2. She doesn’t appear to mind the sewing tape measure dressing up her hips -- one of the measurements most ladies never reveal! As of Sept. 3, this special lady

Whoopee! Wow – what a great look the Pizza Ranch now has. It does give you the feel of a real place to go “round-up” and eat with your friends. What a wonderful addition this new store front look does for our down town. As many of you know, this building has long been an eating establishment. Probably the one remembered most fondly was JoAnn’s Café, run by Lucille Marcus, along with her husband, Bernard, who was known for his delicious bakery goods. The Pizza Ranch has been settled into this establishment for 17 years now, but it has been the last 4 that have made the people of Akron really sit up and take notice of what it has to offer and can do for our community. This is because of the expert management of Tami Finzen Small. She has shown that a franchise restaurant can make a difference and become very much a part of a community like ours. So – “Hats off to the Pizza Ranch’s new look and to Tami!”
