Remember Me? This was submitted by Gene Waag Author Unknown
Some people call me Old Glory, others call me the Star Spangled Banner, but whatever they call me, I am your Flag, the Flag of the United States of America...Something has been bothering me, so I thought I might talk it over with you... I remember sometime ago people lined up on both sides of the street to watch the parade and naturally, I was leading every parade, proudly waving in the breeze. When your daddy saw me coming, he immediately removed his hat and placed it over his heart...remember? And you, I remember you. Standing there as straight as a soldier. You didn’t have a hat but you were giving the right salute. Remember your little sister? Not to be outdone, she was saluting the same as your, with her right hand over her heart...remember? What happened? I’m still the same old Flag. Oh, I have a few more stars since you were a boy. A lot more blood has been shed since those parades of long ago. But now I don’t feel as proud as I used to. When I come down the street, you just stand there with your hands in your pockets and I may get a small glance, then you look away. I see children running around and shouting...they don’t seem to know who I am...I saw one man take off his hat and then look around. He didn’t see anybody else with theirs off so he quickly put his hat back on. Is it a sin to be patriotic any more? Have you forgotten what I stand for and where I’ve been - - Anzio, Korea, Guadalcanal, Vietnam...Take a look at the Memorial Honor Rolls sometime, of those who never came back to keep the Republic free...One Nation Under God...When you salute me, you are actually saluting them. Well, it won’t be long until I’ll be coming down your street again. So, when you see me, stand straight, place your right hand over your x I’ll salute you, by waving back...and know that... YOU REMEMBERED!!
Westfield Library News By Trudi Cadenbach The Westfield Beautification Committee has been at it again, and Westfield now has beautifully potted planters up and down Union Street. The color really enhances the street, and we at the library thank them for our stoop pot. Also, the Akron-Westfield Community Service Day students really did a great job. We almost finished organizing and shifting books on the adult side. We had an equivalent of 33 volunteer hours that day, just inside the library, and every one of them was much appreciated. This past Tuesday A-W second graders came to tour town, and visited the City Hall, post office, Loess Hills Visitors Center and the library. We were very proud to show the students what is available here in Westfield, and also how the many pennies these kids were instrumental in raising for the library were used. It was a fun day. For those of you who have not yet visited the Loess Hills building, when the library is open, so is it, so come on by. This interactive center is a true asset to town, and there is much to see for people of all ages. Next Tuesday I will be unveiling the details of our summer reading program during After School program, and I will include details in my article next week. This program will have something for all ages, so dig out those reading glasses and get ready. I also would like to remind you that we will be holding a Scholastic Book Fair on June 9 during the Westerner Day celebration. If you are interested in helping with it, or by manning the library desk that day or any day, come on in and let me know. Everyoneʼs help is needed to keep this venture running. Registration for the forensics science camp, Mystery in the Loess Hills, will be held from now until June 8. This is for those students that will be entering 6th-12th grades. Fifth graders will be considered if space is available. It runs June 11-15, and from 10 a.m. to Noon. Let me know if you or a young person you know will be able to attend. Until next week, remember to come in and get a great book, video, or book on tape, and as a unknown person said, Knowledge is free at the library. Just bring your own container.
