This Whakawatea: Industry Cooperative booklet was the recipient of the 2014 Xerox Quality Improvement Award for EIT We are proud of the way our students contribute to their community through Industry Cooperative activities, and report their projects to you through this booklet. Please read, enjoy, and feel free to contact us for any further information about the programme.

Welcome to Whakawatea: Industry Cooperative Whakawatea, which may refer to the closing song, is an apt title for the Industry Cooperative course in the Bachelor of Recreation and Sport programme. Completed by all students in the final year of the degree, this course gives students an opportunity to negotiate a 150-hour practicum experience aligned with the student’s academic and professional interests within the sport, recreation and health industry. Each student initiates, negotiates, develops, refines, implements, and ultimately reports upon a comprehensive project of benefit to their host organisation. Therefore the ‘co-op’ becomes a three-way venture between the student, a sport, recreation or health organisation and an academic supervisor.

Each year the students become involved with numerous organisations, and the contribution to the community is a credit to the students, the hosting organisations and EIT. This booklet is designed to present summaries of the Whakawatea, Industry Cooperative projects for 2014. We hope you find it informative, interesting and motivating, whether reading it as a potential student, an interested industry partner, stakeholder, or a current student looking for inspiration for your own industry cooperative project.

Sonja Gugich Project: The delivery of fundamental movement skills (FMS) in general and special population children from two Hawke’s Bay schools Organisation: Sport Hawke’s Bay My placement with Sport Hawke’s Bay was to deliver their fundamental movement skills (FMS) 7-week programme into two schools, Hohepa and Westshore Primary. The aim was to increase children’s skill levels in four fundamental movements - running, jumping, catching and throwing, as assessed by a pre and post test with 5 weeks of skill specific activities in between.

FMS are crucial for children as they are the foundations to learning more complex sport-specific skills. Children who master FMS exhibit higher levels of physical activity and this is important as children’s risk of obesity is greatly reduced if they are physical active.

Many NZ children are not mastering fundamental movements, therefore there is a great need for the programme. It has proven to increase FMS among primary school aged children, which in turn increases their physical activity levels and sports participation.

Hohepa was included as we believed that FMS would benefit all children regardless of capabilities. The improvements we saw in the Hohepa students will hopefully convince Sport Hawke’s Bay to include intellectually disabled children in future programmes.

Having a child myself I believe getting children physically active and proficient in FMS is immensely important so I was passionate about the programme and hope it can continue for years to come.

Jaimee Poutu Project: He Pī Ka Rere (Learning to fly) Organisation: Sport Hawke’s Bay

Casey Walker is a Kaimahi Hakinakina kohungahunga at Sport Hawke’s Bay. During my placement I had the opportunity to assist Casey in delivering a newly piloted programme called He Pī Ka Rere (Learning to fly) to Kohanga reo (Māori immersion preschool) in the Hawke’s Bay. He Pī Ka Rere is a Māori foundation physical activity approach that enriches the overall development of children aged 0-4 years. The programme is based on traditional techniques used by Māori ancestors, and provides a medium that encourages a child to learn new skills and develop their natural talents through participating in physical activities. He Pī Ka Rere activities are linked to Atua (Gods) Māori and the realms that they protect.

The aim for this programme is to uncover and increase a child’s skills and potential in different areas.

The programme lays the foundations for skilled physical activity which not only benefits a child physically, but also increases positive social, spiritual and cognitive behaviour.

Children will build relationships with movement, participation in teams, learning from others as well as working as an individual. They will learn to understand spatial awareness, increased co-ordination, good nutrition, and feel the benefits of physical activity. He Pī Ka Rere also encourages the development of the Māori language and connectedness to Māori Genealogy through Atua Māori activities.

In years to come the hope is to expand the He Pī Ka Rere programme to the rest of New Zealand.

Emily Thomas Project: Healthy Living - Eat well, stay active Organisation: Central Normal Primary School

Together with Shona, the principal of Central Normal Primary School, we felt it would be beneficial to increase the awareness and knowledge among our youth around the topic of healthy living. With the help and support of the staff at Central Normal, I was able to develop and implement a program called Healthy Living - Eat well, stay active. This program involves 16 weeks of sessions based around the importance of healthy nutrition and physical activity. It required the children to listen, discuss, and actively participate in cooking and physical activity sessions.

Obesity is a huge issue that is continuously rising in New Zealand. The reason I chose to do this project within this organisation is because I believe it’s important to educate our youth on this subject, sooner rather than later. This will help prevent the epidemic soaring in the future, before it’s too late or hard for people to change their ways.

Success that has come from delivering this programme is seeing how much the children’s knowledge has increased, especially around the topic of nutrition. I have enjoyed every minute delivering this project and it has been very humbling to see how much joy the children have had while participating.

Katie Moodie Project: Enhancing primary school aged children’s fundamental movement skills throughout Hawke’s Bay Organisation: Sport Hawke’s Bay

Many children are lacking the knowledgeto execute basic Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) which is concerning as they are the foundation that complex skills are learnt from.

Without competency of FMS such as catching, jumping, running and throwing, the development and growth of a child may be limited.

My placement involved a five week program focusing on the development ofchildren’s fundamental movement skills. We ran this program at two primary schools: St Matthews Primary School and Reignier Catholic School with children aged 6-12years old. Prior to the five week program we tested their capabilities in each skill and at the end of the program we re-tested them in the same areas to see if we have made a positive impact on their skill levels.

This placement brought many rewards, seeing the positive changes in the children’s physical abilities and how it affects them mentally was awesome! This program engaged and challenged the children to push themselves out of their comfort zone. It was so great to see all the children give the activities a go and make improvements, small or big! This placement has given me the insight to become a teacher and to keep helping improve children’s Fundamental Movement Skills.

Jorian Tangaere Project: Patu Academy Organisation: Patu NZ

Patu Aotearoa aims to help Māori and Pacific Island communities with the fight against obesity as they are one of the most concerning populations in New Zealand with a range of major health issues (Ministry of Health, 2014).

The purpose of this project was to assist and encourage year 7 – 8 students to engage in a structured and supportive environment outside of school which is built around sport and exercise. The target group for this project is Camberley (but not excluded to) kids who currently attend Heretaunga Intermediate School.

Patu Aotearoa draws on High Intensity Interval Training (HIT) to enhance and improve an individual’s fitness and to help them reach their future aspirations by building good training foundations.

The Patu Academy aimed to use physical activity as a tool to engage with young people by developing their sporting potential and exposing them to various sport and recreation opportunities.

Experiences during my placement with Patu Aotearoa have helped me to understand the importance of good relationships when working with school-aged children. This project has given me an opportunity to utilise my sporting knowledge and create tailored training sessions for the Patu Academy. These sessions have been appreciated by both the students and the Patu Academy as they adhere to the Patu philosophy while also providing a workout which is different to what they have previously had available.

Melanie Gregory Project: The effects of FMS in typically developed children and differently abled youth; creating lifelong participation in physical activity) Organisation: Sport Hawke’s Bay

My placement with Sports Hawke’s Bay was to deliver and measure the success of the Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) programme into Westshore Primary and Hohepa School. Hohepa is unique as it caters for children with intellectual disabilities, many of whom are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. FMS are movement patterns that involve different parts of the body such as catching, throwing, jumping and running. It’s important for a child to develop these skills at an early age as they are the building blocks which form the base for more complex skills used in sport, recreational activities and in everyday life.

Over 14 weeks Sonja and I facilitated activity sessions that allowed the children to ‘play with purpose’ while focusing on developing and strengthening their FMS. The children were pre and post programme tested on their FMS measuring their improvements while building comparable data for Sport Hawke’s Bay. My hope from this project is that by providing the students of Hohepa the opportunity to participate in the FMS programme that they develop the extra skill sets to integrate into society with ease and confidence. Every child regardless of their individual abilities deserves to be provided with the same opportunities to develop, belong and achieve throughout their lifespan.

Catherine Xi Project: Financial management and volunteer recruitment for Special Olympics Hawke’s Bay Organisation: Special Olympics Hawke’s Bay

With my great passion in sports and helping people with disabilities, my placement was with Special Olympics Hawke’s Bay (SOHB). It is an athlete centred, family based, volunteer driven organisation, providing sports training and competition opportunities for people with an intellectual disability living in the Hawke’s Bay Region.

The purpose of my project was twofold. One was to encourage more volunteers to assist with the athletes during training and at events. Another was to work out the total cost of each sport SOHB was involved in, including all training and events. This would help SOHB to fund-raise and contributes to budgeting.

For the athletes, SOHB is not only about competing, it also helps them to build up confidence and enriches life, making them know their potential strength and provides them with social interaction.

The achieved success is that a volunteer poster has been distributed to communities and put up on Volunteer Hawke’s Bay web page to attract volunteers. Past costs covered early this year have been calculated out and a group of athletes went to Los Angeles in July 2015 for the world games with money raised. The organisation is now looking forward to raising enough money for the nationals in Wellington in 2017.

Rhiarna Ferris Project: PATU! A unique approach to exercise Organisation: Patu Aotearoa

Having a strong passion for fitness and exercise and also my Māori tikanga, led me to pursue my placement opportunity with Patu Aotearoa.

Patu Aotearoa is not just your average exercise centre. It is an exercise programme which provides a place of belonging, whanaungatanga, and it affirms self-belief and mana, empowering individuals to take ownership of their own health and wellbeing. Through personal experience, and seeing the large impact Patu has on our Māori whanau, it inspired me to become involved with this kaupapa.

The aim of my project was to give more opportunity to our Māori whanau to become healthier, fitter and stronger by helping open a Patu in Napier. Because Patu has shown significant success in improving health of whanau, it just made sense for Patu to branch out and allow more people to become involved.

My biggest success and the overall highlight of my placement would be having the opportunity to be involved in an initiative which not only fits my passions and interests, but also gives me the opportunity to make an impact and a positive difference in people’s lives.

Billie-Jane McVety Project: Fundamental Movement Skills: The building blocks for lifelong learning skills in primary school children Organisation: Sport Hawke’s Bay

My placement at Sport Hawke’s Bay was delivering the Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) programme to primary school students. Katie Moodie and I have already spent a term at St Mathews in Hastings, this term we are at Reignier Catholic School in Greenmeadows. This programme was about teaching a selection of students the necessary FMS of running, jumping, throwing and catching which are the basis of all specific actions used in any sport or recreational activity. The programme consisted of a pre-test, five weeks of teaching then a post-test.

Our first school programme was a success and ran smoothly as planned. We had a few sessions where it was raining and had to shorten the circuit times because the school hall was being used. We managed to adapt and it didn’t cause too much disruption to the session.

The biggest learning step for me was actually having the patience to teach children. In the past I haven’t been too fond of children but after doing this placement I have grown to actually like children and enjoy their company. Seeing them smile and succeed made me feel good about myself and know that I was doing something right. While I felt I taught them a lot they also taught me a lot about myself as a person and being a leader for the younger generation.

Anita Chau Project: Running a speed golf event; and enhancing golf performance through advanced analysis technology Organisation: Awatoto Public Golf Course and Hastings Golf Club

Golf is a sport that I am passionate about and I would like to share my passion with others by contributing to the golf community. My placement initiative was to introduce the game of golf to people in Hawke’s Bay and further my skills required to become a qualified Professional Golfer.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to develop and hold a Speed Golf event at Awatoto Public Golf Course with the General Manager, Bruce More, to help encourage participation of golf. The event was a fun and enjoyable environment for golfers and non-golfers of all ages. The success of the event will support many more recreational opportunities.

The Hastings Golf Club’s learning centre offers the latest golf technology to further enhance coaching. Their friendly and professional services can help people of all skill levels and ages.

It was a privilege to be able to observe and learn the advanced golf analysis system from their PGA Professional Golf Coach, Brett Allan. It was my pleasure to be able to support the local golf club and golfers.

My highlighted success was the invaluable practical learning experience I’ve obtained. It has provided me with a wealth of knowledge for my future career.

Hannah van Kampen Project: Establishing and running an elite Hawke’s Bay women’s cycling team Organisation: Ramblers Cycling Club

Ramblers Cycling Club is the biggest cycling club in New Zealand. Its main aim is to run a race every Saturday for riders of all abilities. For my placement with Ramblers I wanted to go outside of this aim and create a team of elite women cyclists.

My initial project aim became ‘to create a New Zealand Elite Cycling Team of Hawke’s Bay, Ramblers Cycling Club female riders. This team would be to a standard of, and able to compete against professional teams when they come to New Zealand for the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) tour each year.’

The initial project ended with the completion of the UCI tour in February 2015 where the team was a huge success. They not only matched the professional teams but in some instances bettered them both on and off the bike.

After this huge success my aim was to carry the team through to the next UCI tour, however this was cancelled by organisers forcing me to re-define the teams aim. It became: ‘To carry the Hawke’s Bay Ramblers Women’s Cycling Team through the 2015- 16 season to compete and finish on the podium in the Dynamo national road series.’ This is the goal we are currently working towards.

Tuhiwai Kennedy Project: Football academy: Developing student athletes at Hastings Boys’ High School Organisation: Hastings Boys’ High School

My placement work involved me delivering a football academy programme that incorporated teaching football skills, physical skills, mental skills and aspects of nutrition to the year nine (9) and ten (10) students of Hastings Boys’ High School. The aim was to create better student athletes by changing their attitudes from ‘thinking and acting like a loser’ to ‘thinking and acting like a winner’.

There are many football academies being created and operated overseas, especially in Europe, that have shown significant improvements in their participants’ football performance. Some have even produced professional football players. This is why some schools overseas adopt football academies into their programme. The reason why I did the football academy with Hastings Boys’High School is because I wanted to improve the quality and quantity of football talent within this school and Hawke’s Bay. This project has not only shown improvements in football understanding and ability, but also coordination, problem solving and attitude towards school life and others. This is because the students feel like they’re a part of something special, which I believe is true. We have also seen improvements in the students work ethic, confidence, initiative, motivation and organisation -plus they’ve also taught me a lot about myself.

Stephen Bulpitt Project: Top Gear Youth Riders: Providing cycling opportunities to Hawke’s Bay youth Organisation: Sport Hawke’s Bay

My passion for cycling and the great outdoors inspired me to take up an opportunity to help structure and coordinate the running of the cycling program called ‘Top Gear Youth Riders’, which is an initiative of Sport Hawke’s Bay. To develop the programme I have worked along side Lyndal Johansson, the Special Projects Event Coordinator at Sport Hawke’s Bay. Top Gear Youth Riders has been developed to give the youth of Hawke’s Bay the opportunity to learn fundamental skills across three exciting cycling disciplines; Cyclocross, Mountain Biking and Road Cycling. The programmes run by Top Gear Youth Riders are structured in a way that eliminates youth barriers and provides a taste-tester experience across different cycling code. It also helps develop a pathway to get youth into local cycling clubs. Top Gear Youth Riders programmes are run by qualified cycling instructors who are passionate about cycling and building youth confidence on a bike. In return this will increase/maintain children’s long term physical activity levels to help combat youth obesity, as well as providing a pathway for positive youth development.

The success of the programmes to date has been outstanding and we have needed to start capping numbers to our programmes. This indicates a real need for programmes like the Top Gear Youth Riders to continue to be run in the beautiful Hawke’s Bay.

Jonathan Ruru Project: Napier Pirate Rugby & Sports Club fitness facility Organisation: Napier Pirate Rugby & Sports Club

Throughout my academic studies and my evolving rugby career, it has become apparent to me the lack of importance that local sports clubs are placing on enhancing their member’s athletic performances as well as developing an overall more physically active community.

Napier Pirate Rugby & Sports Club is Hawke’s Bay’s most established community rugby and sports club (Est.1886), whose members range from five years to 80+ years old.

My projects primary aim is to develop an operational fitness facility in a local sports club (Napier Pirate Rugby & Sports Club).

The learnings from this will act as a pilot study for future initiatives by the organisation.

Throughout this project I have been required to engage in various roles and undertake numerous challenges, some successes have been: • gained approval for such a project to be initiated, • worked alongside key people involved with the organisation such as financial advisors, • designed floor plans and negotiated with fitness equipment suppliers (Industrial Athletic), Napier Pirate Rugby & Sports Club have been a positive placement organisation to align myself with as they are highly motivated in moving the club in a positive direction and looking for ways to promote the club to potential members and sponsors.

Josh Page Project: GMC: Cycle Team, coaching and development Organisation: GMC Coaching

My placement was with Gordon McCauley Coaching (GMC) which is a Cycling Coaching company I am also employed by. My goal was to set up a GMC Development Cycling Team to compete in two cycle race series held in the North Island. This would provide another point of difference to our company, offering opportunities to clients to experience team racing as well as attracting new people in to cycling. With the GMC coaching company expanding every year we could possibly be the largest cycle coaching company in the country and have even floated the idea of becoming an official club. Having a GMC Racing Development Team presented a great way to keep this expansion happening by encouraging and developing both young and older talent in a fun-focused environment where we all strive to get the most out of each other.

Our team is set up and ready to go with our first race of the series starting on the 19th of September.
