Welcome to Whakawatea: Industry Cooperative Whakawatea, which may refer to the closing song, is an apt title for the Industry Cooperative course in the Bachelor of Recreation and Sport programme. Completed by all students in the final year of the degree, this course gives students an opportunity to negotiate a 150-hour practicum experience aligned with the student’s academic and professional interests within the sport, recreation and health industry. Each student initiates, negotiates, develops, refines, implements, and ultimately reports upon a comprehensive project of benefit to their host organisation. Therefore the ‘co-op’ becomes a three-way venture between the student, a sport, recreation or health organisation and an academic supervisor.

Each year the students become involved with numerous organisations, and the contribution to the community is a credit to the students, the hosting organisations and EIT. This booklet is designed to present summaries of the Whakawatea, Industry Cooperative projects for 2018. We hope you find it informative, interesting and motivating, whether reading it as a potential student, an interested industry partner, stakeholder, or a current student looking for inspiration for your own industry cooperative project.

Aimee Carlson Project: Development of student athletes through a player profiling resource Organisation: Taradale High School As an ex-Taradale High School student, I wanted to give back to a community that supported me immensely during my high school years. During the years spent at Taradale High School I was exposed to many new opportunities through my coaches. This was my chance to support the next generation of athletes in the same way. In my placement I coached the Taradale High School Senior A netball team. This gave me the perfect chance to take a glimpse at the aspects of teaching and coaching which I have an interest in.

At High School level there are many expectations set upon students, especially student athletes. Often fitness and skill levels are considered to be the only contributing factors required by a successful athlete. Determination, commitment, adaptability and discipline are just a few of the attributes that are often overlooked when thinking about being a successful athlete.

This placement has enabled the opportunity to create a successful player profile poster that the students will be able to identify with.

Personal experience and the surveying of several Hawke’s Bay school coaches determined what attributes and skills are valued the most.

This profile will allow students to see what coaches look for in an athlete when they are selecting squads and teams.

There have been many achievements throughout the placement at Taradale High School.

Sabrina Quartel Project: Developing pocket cards for teachers based on the Fundamental Movement Skills programme Organisation: Sport Hawke’s Bay Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) are the basic skills that children need to learn to enjoy sporting activity. Sally Mackenzie works for Sports Hawke’s Bay and runs the FMS programme. Fellow student, David Epplett, and I worked alongside Sally to deliver the FMS programme, which included running, jumping, throwing and catching skills, to Havelock North Primary and Twyford School during term two and three.

I wanted to be a part of this project because I saw it as a great opportunity to actively engage with the children in a fun and supportive environment where I would be able to help grow the children’s skills, and at the same time grow my confidence in a leadership role.

My project was to design four pocket-sized cards that all join by a key ring to fit nicely in a teacher’s pocket. The idea behind this was to take what was already in the FMS booklets and use the main teaching skills and skill criteria points to enable the teacher’s easy access to this information any time and any place.

What was most rewarding for me was working with the children and watching their confidence grow as they practiced the skills we taught.

They became more confident in their own abilities and what they were able to achieve when they set their minds to it.

I found myself learning a very similar lesson from this project: By putting myself in a situation, which excited but also scared me, my confidence grew with every week I interacted with the children.

Joel Spurgeon Project: Creating a functional, motivating and social gym environment to administer strength and conditioning to secondary school students Organisation: Napier Girls’ High School Napier Girls’ High School is highly commended in Hawke’s Bay not only for its academic and social successes, but significantly for its sporting success.

In partnership with the Sports and Physical Education (PE) management team at the school, I took on three major roles within the organisation: strength and conditioning coach, gym manager, and football skills-development coach.

The placement initiative was to promote exercise prescription that would positively impact on sporting performance and physical well-being of students.

At the core of the project, the gym was transformed by adapting the lay-out for functionality, investing in new necessary equipment for training effectiveness (i.e. treadmills), and encouraging social interaction via exercise. A weekly schedule for strength and conditioning sessions was constructed for three subgroups of students identified: football players, cross-country runners, and non-athletic girls. Every session I would introduce two new resistance-based exercises alongside the consistent warm-up, cool-down, and stretching protocol. Use of video analysis and a generated self-efficacy questionnaire were means of data collection.

Major successes of the project were sporting success with two football teams winning their leagues and one team finishing runners-up. The gym was transformed and is now a buzzing social environment. Questionnaire results presented boosted self-confidence levels and personal-bests were achieved.

One barrier was inconsistent student participation due to illness or absence. Overall the project was a mighty success and a very rewarding experience.

Kate Winfield Project: Enabling healthy food choices Organisation: Irongate School Good nutrition is extremely important when it comes to education and helping students reach their full potential.

Often school canteen menus do not have the best options, which can lead to poor food choices. Irongate School are in the process of changing and improving their canteen menu and utilising the school garden in the hope students will make healthier food choices. It will also give them the opportunity to experience different food.

Students are encouraged to relate learning back to the school motto Whakatutuki (Achieve) – Ako (Learn) – Tupu (Grow). To implement the lunch menu changes students have taken charge of collecting orders and money, as well as shopping for and preparing lunches daily with the intention of learning new life skills.

Initially too much time was being taken from student lesson time, so lunch making is now divided between syndicates within the school.

Each week groups of students carry out this task and are supported by their learning coaches. Changes being made have been welcomed and have opened up talk among both staff and students about how meals can be improved and changed to benefit students.

While at Irongate I worked with a select group of students. Using my background as a chef, we cooked and focused on a weekly lesson such as healthy snack choices. I have also compiled a seasonal planting guide, costed recipes and put together lesson plans.

During my time with Irongate I bonded with the group of girls I worked with. I have watched them grow more confident, open and get excited about experiencing new things, especially during our cooking lessons.

David Epplett Project: Adding to the Fundamental Movement Skills programme Organisation: Sport Hawke’s Bay The Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) programme is run by Sport Hawke’s Bay and delivered by Sally McKenzie.

This programme teaches primary school students basic sports skills such as running, jumping, throwing and catching, then incorporates these skills in to games in order to get the children practicing while having fun.

My individual addition to this programme was to add basic exercises while keeping the same game format as the current FMS programme. These exercises were chosen to complement the skills being taught while setting a foundation that could be built on in future gym or field training.

I worked with Sally to make my additions to the programme and delivered it in two schools with seven classes in total. The children in these classes were Year 2 and 3 students, so the games that I designed had to be fun, easy to understand and keep them entertained while playing.

Working with these young children presented a variety of challenges, the most notable being keeping them active and not letting them get distracted. The games I added were well received by the children and were often their favourite games to play. I feel my additions were a success and have helped to set a foundation for their future sports training. Overall this placement was a very rewarding experience.

Nicola Woods Project: Healthy eating recipe booklet and cooking classes Organisation: Sport Hawke’s Bay Healthy eating and nutritional education are vital components to looking after our own health and well-being, as well as our Whanau’s health and well-being. For some people in the community, education around nutrition and healthy eating are sadly not incorporated into their everyday living.

In Hawke’s Bay, people can learn about healthy eating through the Green Prescription programme that Sport Hawke’s Bay offers for free. People are referred to this programme through their GP. The aim of my placement with Sport Hawke’s Bay was to create a nutritional advice booklet, and an affordable Healthy Recipe book, that could be used in the future as part of the Green Prescription programme. I have worked alongside Sue Smith and Jane Denby to create this vision.

Following the completion of this booklet, I planned and delivered five weeks of cooking classes to the Green Prescription programme. This became known as “Cook with Us” and used the recipes I designed for the booklet. Not only did these classes and the booklet benefit these individuals’ lives, they also helped create a healthier future for their families.

This placement gave me great confidence in my own nutritional knowledge. My confidence also grew in learning how to communicate and present my own cooking classes to groups of 12 adults. I really enjoyed this experience.

Ellie Tilson Project: First aid in a rural primary school Organisation: Medics On Scene Medics on Scene is an organisation with two areas of provision; first aid event care, and community first aid training. I had the opportunity to work under the community first aid training side of the organisation to develop a basic first aid course to be delivered to a group of year 5-8 students at Sherenden and Districts School.

The aim of this project was for the children to develop their knowledge of basic first aid and what to do in an emergency before medical professionals get there.

Sherenden and Districts School is a small rural school, therefore the framework of the course was designed to use hands-on learning for the children relating to rural accidents/injuries. The course was designed as a four hour course broken up over two afternoons. However we changed this to a one day course following school availability. The students took part in topics based around basic first aid skills; CPR/chest pain, bleeding management, fractures/dislocations and concussions.

Underpinning all of this, the children learned what DRS ABCD means, the recovery position and what to say if they call 111.

This project has been very rewarding as I was able to design, develop and present a new course dedicated to children living in a rural area where many accidents and injuries do occur.

This first aid course will hopefully continue to sit within the community training provision of Medics on Scene and add to the provision of this organisation.

Nick Mason Project: Promoting group-walks as a means with which to improve mental health Organisation: Whatever It Takes Trust and Walking for Wellness - Hawke’s Bay For those with poor mental health, exercise can be hugely beneficial, but motivation can prove to be a barrier. Often, the more strenuous exercise is, the harder it is to be motivated to participate. Mental illness can also be incredibly isolating, which provides an additional barrier.

The aim of this project was to promote the activity of walking in a group for the physiological, psychological, and social benefits. This was done a walking group with mental health service users through the organisation Whatever It Takes (WIT) which compliments an established walking group with the general public.

I decided to start the public walking group after using physical activity to treat my obsessive compulsive disorder and psychosis diagnoses.

Walking is all I can manage during times of severe psychological distress. My personal experience with mental illness helped me in this endeavour by offering me “inside information� which I now use to support others. WIT is the perfect organisation to host such a methodology due to its holistic view of health. During these walking groups a coaching routine promoting positive thinking is constantly being cultivated and employed. The groups meet once a week with WIT, and six times a week with the general public.

Most participants require encouragement to attend, that encouragement is provided both during the walks and with the assistance of social media. Both groups have slowly but steadily grown in numbers and participants reached. There are good signs that indicate this progress will continue. Both walking groups have been well-received by participants. They have been quick to report the personal benefits, especially social and psychological, with several also losing weight as well..

Nikayla Lambert Project: Data analysis of participation across all IRONMĀORI events Organisation: Te Timatanga Ararau Trust - IRONMĀORI The crisis of obesity is a growing concern in New Zealand. Current research indicates that approximately one third of the New Zealand population are obese, and it is especially prevalent in Pacific Island and Māori populations. For my placement, I worked in conjunction with Iron Māori who promote health, wellbeing and longevity from kaumātua to mokopuna.

This year represents the 10 year anniversary for Iron Māori. The purpose of my placement was to collect and analyse the data from the past 10 years of event participants, across all events. This involved analysing total numbers, age, gender, nationality and region splits. The data demonstrated growth in participant involvement, the average age and range, as well as gender, nationality and region dominance.

A survey was distributed to all participants in order to identify multi-year attendance, region to main event, advice on how to target a younger demographic, and overall feedback on whether the participant felt supported throughout their journey. Ideas were also sought on how the organisation can keep the individual engaged within their events or physical activity.

One barrier to gathering all the data was the result of an upgraded registration system. This meant past participant data of events from 2008 - 2013 were irretrievable for the purpose of data analysis.

The highlights of my placement were: • •

Participating in my first Iron Māori event (Women’s Duathlon) Working alongside the registration team for the Quarter event, therefore being able to put a face to the data analysed Being a part of an organisation that inspires and supports individuals to live a healthier lifestyle has been immensely rewarding.

Roman Roberts Project: Implementing an injury prevention plan for fruit pickers at T&G Global Organisation: T&G Global T&G Global is an organisation that provides a wide range of fruits and vegetables that are safe, fresh, and sustainable for all people to consume. They employ pruners, pickers, packers and a range of other staff to get their produce from seed to shops.

My placement aim was to develop and implement an injury prevention programme for seasonal pickers/pruners working in the T&G apple orchards. Injury prevention, whether it be in sport or in the workplace, is essential for the safety of all people to assist in reducing the risk of serious injuries from happening.

My placement started with observing how the pickers/pruners performed daily tasks, and asking questions of the workers about the main areas of discomfort and repetitive strain and stress. Some of the main areas of discomfort were the lower back, calf muscles, shoulders and wrists. My focus was to implement the fundamentals of a warm-up, followed by a set of dynamic stretches that targeted all body parts with extra attention on the main areas of discomfort.

One of the outcomes of the project was that the pickers/pruners noticed less stress and discomfort around the lower back after performing consistent basic stretching techniques. Equally important to the pickers/pruners ability to perform good stretching techniques, was helping them understand the benefits of maintaining a healthy strong body to cope with work pressures.

Luke Odumesi Project: Evaluating physical literacy Organisation: Hawke’s Bay Community Fitness Centre Trust A diverse and exciting new sports, exercise and health facility is currently under construction at the Hawke’s Bays Regional Sports Park which has recently been named the EIT Institute of Sport and Health.

The vision of the Hawke’s Bay Community Fitness Centre Trust which has driven the project is to improve the health and wellbeing of the local Hawke’s Bay people by supporting health and fitness initiatives for communities, sports development for schools, and health and sports science research.

My project goal within the organisation was to develop and deliver a questionnaire for evaluating physical literacy in athletes. This involved assisting and observing different strength and conditioning sessions, as well as physical literacy sessions. These sessions focused on fundamental movement patterns and developing a growth mindset. The groups I worked with included Wairoa College, Karamu High School and the Hawke’s Bay under-19 Rugby Team.

With a real need for high-performance sporting opportunities for athletes in Hawke’s Bay, the aim of my project aligned well with the vision of the organisation. My achievements on the placement included delivering sessions to the groups, researching questionnaires, and successfully trialing them on the participants.

One challenge I faced was progressing a coaching programme when individuals were not always able to attend every session. I have learned first-hand that every athlete requires tailored attention for their specific needs.

Through working with a broad range of athletes from different schools, ages and ability levels, my coaching knowledge and skills have grown so much.

I believe I am leaving a positive impact on the people I have worked with.

Ormond Heather Project: Improving the power of players through use of Olympic power lifting Organisation: Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union Olympic lifting is one of the most common universal methods used to develop power in athletes, however its execution can be complex. The biggest contributor to improper execution seems to be lack of knowledge about correct technique. My role within the Hawke’s Bay Magpies gym facility was to coach Olympic lifting under the guidance of head trainer Luke Stephenson, in hope to improve the technique and performance of the players. Pre and post power output testing was conducted every 8 weeks to assess any improvements.

During coaching sessions, athletes using the gym spent ten minutes maximum on the lifting platform. Coaching cues needed to be clear and concise. After analysing execution they were provided either internal cues (e.g. bracing core) or external cues (e.g. bar path) to focus on in order to improve technique.

After 8 weeks of coaching, technique had improved immensely. Lifts had become lot cleaner and more explosive. Power output changes, however, were insignificant. This may have been due to minor focus on Olympic lifting in comparison to their entire training load. Also, constant training of strength and endurance may have hindered the development of power gains as a result of Olympic lifting improvements.

From this experience I have: • Expanded my knowledge of Olympic lifting via a combination of literature and personal interactions.

• Gained confidence to manage large groups. Previously this was an issue for me.

• Understood how to prescribe exercise programmes based on the training season. Additionally, my knowledge of exercise variations has increased.

Jobey Pomare Project: Physical literacy and long-term athlete development Organisation: Hawke’s Bay Community Fitness Centre Trust The Hawke’s Bay Community Fitness Centre Trust is an organisation in the Hawke’s Bay region whose purpose is to improve the health and well-being of people through healthy lifestyle and physical literacy education programmes.

Physical literacy and long-term athlete development are key focuses for the organisation.

My role within the organisation this year was as a Physical Literacy Educator through strength and conditioning delivery. My project in the organisation was to develop and implement a programme that emphasises physical literacy and long-term athlete development for youth rowers. The programme was envisaged to be used across all sports and recreational activities because of the functional movements that it involves. As the placement evolved the target population changed from rowers to the younger students at Wairoa College.

Even though I could not implement my programme with the rowers, I could use various aspects of the programme to coach the fundamental movements that are necessary for developing physical literacy and long-term athlete development. Since I am an ex-student of Wairoa College, I was able to relate and get along with the students there. My role on this placement has helped to me to develop my skills as a strength and conditioning coach and learn new ways to coach athletes to develop their own skills in training and sports. Physical literacy and long-term athlete development have helped me to understand new ways of coaching athletes and how training can be developed over time, especially for younger athletes who are still building confidence and competence in training and sport.

Mataeus Marsh Project: Player performance and game play statistics Organisation: Hastings Boys’ High School Analytics are the present and future of sports. Today every major professional sports team has someone who carries out data analysis for the benefit of the team’s performance. Analytics have changed the way that coaches, teams and players prepare to play sports today.

My Industry Co-operative placement gave me the opportunity to use my passion for basketball and share my knowledge of the game with young students of Hastings Boys’ High School.

My project aim was to measure player performance through statistical analysis of game play. This required me to record player minutes, points, rebounds, assists, steal, turnovers and shooting percentages on an App provided to me called EasyStats. Through this, coaching staff and players were able to make much clearer evaluations of their individual and team performance.

The sports team involved in this project were the Hastings Boys’ High School Senior A basketball team. At the end of each major tournament, I was able to develop a booklet with the statistics gathered from the tournament for use by the coaching staff. This was used as a feedback and player evaluation tool, enabling players to set goals in preparation for the next game or tournament.

The key benefit of this project was I could determine what individual players and the team were lacking from a statistical point of view.

I enjoyed the project and would like to thank Hastings Boys High School for the opportunity to work with their Senior A basketball team.

Amy Withey-Percy Project: Implementing a strength and conditioning programme Organisation: Taylor Hawks basketball team I was fortunate enough to work alongside the Taylor Hawks basketball team for my industry cooperative project.

My role within the team was to pre-screen the players, then prescribe them individualised strength and conditioning programmes dependent upon their needs, capabilities and goals. My second focus point was to establish warm up and cool down routines that would enable the players to perform at their peak, whilst minimising the risk of injury.

The benefits of well-designed strength and conditioning programmes are increased strength, speed, explosive power and overall athletic performance. When the Hawks’ players joined the team it became apparent that time was limited and that any major strength and conditioning improvements needed to be developed in the off season rather than during the competitive season.

The season was very busy and commenced before we were able to achieve everything we originally envisioned. I have therefore developed training resources for implementation next season. This will allow the team and players to get straight into a structured training regime upon arrival.

Challenges I have encountered were trying to balance this practicum placement with fulltime study, my part time fitness instructor role and finding free time in the player’s intensive training schedules for conditioning sessions. Traditionally basketball was not something I saw myself invested in, but over the season I grew fond of the Hawks team and loved watching them go from strength to strength in the gym and on the court. This has been a great opportunity to utilise the knowledge and practical skills learnt throughout my three years of study.

Ashleigh Frith Project: Sugar consumption education related to campus vending machines Organisation: Health Hawke’s Bay The energy we consume everyday can impact our body’s health and functional abilities. The knowledge of basic nutrition and guiding healthy lifestyles is critical in reducing long-term health problems. Pairing with Health Hawke’s Bay, my project aim was to educate EIT Hawke’s Bay students about how the high sugar levels in some products bought out of vending machines are detrimental to our health as students.

This project consisted of a survey outside of each vending machine located in the main EIT Hawke’s Bay cafeteria in order to understand why students choose to use vending machines, how often they use them, and if they understand how the effects the products they choose may be enhancing their susceptibility to diabetes.

Fast forwarding 2 weeks later, a follow up survey was run for the students willing to participate. The importance of this survey was to find out if there were any changes in the use of vending machines.

One barrier I came across was getting students to participate in the first survey. This challenge was not surprising considering a lot of students use vending machines on the way to class, therefore they do not have spare time to complete surveys or think about the sugar levels of the products they are choosing.

This project explored the benefits of decreasing the consumption of current vending machine products by students at EIT, in hope to replace the products in the machines with healthier options in the future. This would support healthier lifestyle choices for students in the future.
