HAS GREAT AMBITIONS FOR EIMSKIP

At the beginning of 2019, Mr. Vilhelm Már Þorsteinsson was named Eimskip’s new CEO. Global News sat down with Vilhelm a few days after the announcement and asked him some questions about himself and about his vision for the company. We began by inquiring about his early years.

Where did you grow up?

I was born in Akureyri, the great fishing town and the Capital of the North in Iceland. Life revolved around football in the summer and skiing in the winter.

Later, I worked as a fisherman in the summer and skied in the winter. That’s just how life was in Akureyri. As many of my relatives, I aspired as a teenager to become a fisherman.

Do you have a large family?

I’m married and I have four children, two boys and two girls between the age of 12 to 22.

Where did you work previously?

As of last January, the 4th, I had worked for Íslandsbanki for 20 years. Prior to 2008 I held various positions within the bank, from securities brokerage to the CEO’s office working on different transaction and strategic matters domestically and abroad. A of October 2008 I was the head of the Corporate & Investment Banking until I joined Eimskip in January. I really enjoyed my time at the bank, although challenging at times, and worked with a lot of great people, both colleagues and customers over the years. It was a strange feeling leaving the bank after all those years but at the same time I am very excited for the opportunity to join Eimskip and there are exciting times ahead.

Outside the office, what is your favorite hobby?

As a father of four kids, I try to spend as much quality time as possible with them and support them in their activities and hobbies. I’m a big fan of skiing for the past few years, I’ve been combining skiing with mountaineering, which is a great way to experience the outdoors. It gives me the opportunity of exploring the country while also skiing down slopes that I otherwise wouldn’t have. It’s a great sport to practice in Iceland.

Where did you study?

I completed a B.S. Degree in business & logistics at the University of Reykjavík, before graduating from Pace University in New York with an MBA. I was in New York from 2001 to 2003.

What was your first real job?

I went on a fishing tour with my father when I was five and I have always considered that my first job. It was a full tour. I received my first paycheck when I was seven, after having completed another tour at sea. Later, when I was older, I worked as a fisherman for Samherji (a fishing company in Akureyri).

This basically went on until I started working at the bank. You could say that I haven’t worked in many different places, although the jobs and responsibilities have certainly been diverse. “I suppose I’m back to a kind of a seamanship with Eimskip,” Vilhelm says and smiles, obviously quite pleased to be doing a job that is more connected to the sea than the bank.

Why Eimskip?

Eimskip is a great company with a remarkable history. It’s an exciting industry as well. It’s quite intertwined with everything that goes on in North Atlantic. It’s a kind of barometer for what’s going on in our home and within international markets. Eimskip is a part of the national soul in Iceland, given how dependent we are on imports and exports. A good transportation system is the basis for a prosperous life on the island. It’s also been exciting to observe the growth of the company abroad, and how it’s made a name for itself in freight-forwarding internationally even in markets that aren’t at all connected to Iceland. I see a lot of opportunities in the future. I’ll be making time to acquaint myself with all of the good people that have done such a remarkable job for the company around the world and visit some of our good customers. I immediately noticed that the morale within the company is good and the culture is lively, and people motivated to service our customers well. I see these strengths as an opportunity.

Looking forward, what are your ambitions for Eimskip?

I see opportunities in taking greater advantage of the systems that we have in place. Greenland and transatlantic shipping are on my mind as well. Eimskip has certainly been refining these systems for a long time and is, of course, doing a good job as far as these things go; however, one can always do better.

Further revenue and cost synergies of those companies that we manage all over the world, whether that’s liner shipping or freight forwarding will also be on the agenda. Eimskip employs transportation specialists whose expertise we can leverage on. I really look forward to take our company forward with all the good people that work for Eimskip and hope we will create good returns for our shareholdersvessela more interesting workplace for employees, and continue to provide excellent service for customers.

WE SEE WHAT’S ON THE HORIZON BEFORE ANYONE ELSE “TAKING PART IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF OUR SAILING SYSTEM HAS BEEN ONE OF THE TOUGHEST AND ONE OF THE MOST REWARDING PROJECTS THAT I HAVE PARTICIPATED IN AT EIMSKIP SO FAR,” SAYS SARA PÁLSDÓTTIR, SENIOR MANAGER OF EIMSKIP’S IMPORT DEPARTMENT IN ICELAND. “There are so many aspects to consider for everything to work smoothly for our customers.”

Sara took over the import sales department in the fall of 2017, following a dramatic year in imports.

“Volumes were through the roof and the Eimskip’s terminal in Sundahöfn was congested for most of the year. 2018, however, has been a lot steadier in terms of volume. As compared to the past decade, tourism in Iceland has increased at a more ‘normal’ rate in 2018. This gives Iceland the chance to grow in a healthier way. Businesses are beginning to come to terms with this normalization, allowing them to focus on building a more sustainable environment over the coming years. In this regard, Eimskip plays a vital role and this is one of the great things about this business: We are in direct contact with our customers and can often see what’s on the horizon before anyone else.”

“This means that our sailing system needs to be reliable. It requires constant review to ensure that we are offering our customers the best solutions. Our sailing schedule is geared toward short transit time and designed 4 GLOBAL NEWS

so that our vessels arrive in Iceland early each week. In the fall of 2018, for example, we noticed an opportunity to improve our red line; vessels on the red line were arriving in the middle of the week and this meant that if there were any weather-related delays in the winter months, our customers did not, in some cases, receive their cargo until the end of the week. There for so we altered the schedule: Today our vessels depart from Aarhus our last port out of Scandinavia on Thursdays instead of Fridays. This means that they arrive in Iceland on Monday afternoons rather than Wednesdays.

NEW VESSELS CONSTRUCTED IN CHINA

TWO 2,150 TEU CONTAINER VESSELS ARE CURRENTLY BEING CONSTRUCTED FOR EIMSKIP IN CHINA. THEY ARE EXPECTED TO BE DELIVERED IN THE FALL OF 2019.

The new vessels will be built to an ice class and will be designed to operate in accordance with the Polar Code, allowing them to sail in the artic seas. With an overall length of 180 meters and a breadth of 31 meters, both of them will be equipped with a TIER III engine, which is specially designed to lower nitrogen oxide emissions into the atmosphere. The vessels will increase Eimskip’s efficiency and service reliability as they are larger than the ones that are currently being operated. They will also consume less fuel per container unit, with lower emissions due to a builtin scrubber system that minimizes sulfur oxide emissions into the atmosphere. Finally, these larger and more economical vessels will result in a lower operational cost per container unit. The new vessels will be named Ms. Brúarfoss and Ms. Dettifoss in tradition with the naming Eimskip vessels after Icelandic waterfalls.

EVER WONDERED WHAT IT’S LIKE WORKING FOR EIMSKIP UK? RECENTLY, WE INTERVIEWED JOHN MACIVER, MANAGER OF LINER SERVICES FOR EIMSKIP UK, TO GAIN INSIGHT INTO WHAT IT TAKES TO WORK FOR THE COMPANY. WE ALSO INQUIRED INTO HIS EXPERIENCES WITH EIMSKIP UK AND HOW THE INDUSTRY HAS CHANGED OVER THE PAST 43 YEARS.

When did you start working for Eimskip and what was your first role?

I joined the company on November 17th, 1975, back when it was known as Peckston Shipping Ltd in Hull. We became MGH (Formerly McGregor, Gow & Holland) in 1981. My first role was an office junior, a general dogsbody. People sent me to the various shipping companies to deliver and collect shipping documents. A lot of my time was spent in the long room at the customs house obtaining customs clearances. As a 16-year-old, I found this a very daunting task; back then, customs officers had this aura of superiority and were rarely very approachable. This was much the case when I needed to request priority clearance in order to be allowed back into our office (which would have been impossible without it). I did enjoy traveling to the different offices in Hull’s Old Town. A large benefit, I found, was that a few years later I knew the quickest way to all the pubs.

Why and when did you begin working in the Immingham office?

I transferred to the Immingham office in January 1986. This coincided with the boom of the fresh food business from Iceland. At the time, there were only three employees at the Immingham office, which is vastly different from the scale of our current operations and office space. The Immingham office was Eimskip’s first direct line to Iceland. We were joined by our first Icelander a few months later. Our role was to act as intermediaries between 8 GLOBAL NEWS

the fresh fish importers and the exporters. We found this to be very beneficial to the business; if any questions arose, the phone was picked up and the issue was addressed in the customer’s native tongue, which, again, all of us found very helpful.

What has been the biggest change in the industry over this 43-year period?

Communication Methods! It has to be communication. We have so many different methods of communication available today; the ease of contacting someone and passing on a message is unbelievable. It’s such a stark contrast to when I first started. In 1975, there were no mobile phones or emails.

I can actually remember suggesting that we make the out-of-town calls in the afternoon as it was cheaper. Also, the customs entries needed to be handwritten in black pen with three copies, which meant that if you hadn’t pressed down hard enough to mark the copies effectively the entries would be rejected. In comparison, the communication, the systems, and the available equipment today allows for a much more efficient business, and the processes involved are much more efficient as well.

In the Eimskip UK Office, how would you describe the values of the team?

I’ve been very lucky at my time during the company. I have always trusted the people I’ve worked with and that trust has been reciprocated. I have worked with lots of wonderful people during my 43 years with the company there are far too many to mention. There is always a lot of support from Eimskip and that is evident in the UK office. We’re like a family. We all work together and assist each other when necessary, regardless of title or role. We understand fully what is expected of us and together we strive to deliver the expected results and services.

CLASSIC FISH AND CHIPS “À LA MS. DETTIFOSS” Canola oil or vegetable oil, to deep-fry 4 medium potatoes, unpeeled, cut into 1cm thick batons 120g self-raising flour 185ml chilled beer 2 egg whites, lightly whisked 8 small cod fillets (or cut 4 large files in half) Plain flour, to dust Sea salt Tartare sauce, to serve Lemon wedges, to serve Add oil to a saucepan to a depth of 12cm. Heat to 190°C over medium-high heat. Add the potato and deep-fry for 5 minutes or until golden. Transfer to a tray with paper towel and cover to keep warm.

Place flour in a large bowl. Add the beer and egg white and, stirring slowly, gradually incorporate the flour to form a smooth batter.

Reheat oil. Add the chips and deep-fry for a further 5 minutes or until golden and then drain.

Lightly dust the fish in flour and shake off any excess.

Reheat oil. Dip 4 pieces of fish, into the batter to evenly coat. Deep-fry for 3 minutes or until crisp and golden. Drain on paper towel. Reheat oil and repeat with the remaining fish.

Season with sea salt flakes and serve immediately with tartare sauce, and lemon and lime wedges.

ICELANDIC FISH BALLS FOR A LUNCH ON BOARD MS. LAGARFOSS 1 kg. (2.2 pounds) of ground cod fish or haddock 200 grams (0.5 pounds) of minced onion 4 eggs 1 liter (33 ounces) of half and half 2 teaspoons of black pepper 200 grams (0.5 pounds) of flour 2 cubes of vegetable bouillon Pour all of the ingredients into a bowl and mix together.

Roll mixture into small balls and fry on a medium-hot pan with butter and onion until golden brown.

Serve hot with small potatoes; fried onions; fresh, finely-cut root vegetables; and Rémoulade.

EIMSKIP FAVORITE FISH DISHES Eimskip is proud of there seamen they strive to serve the company and its customer all year long in some of the most difficult working conditions know. One of the things they depend on is a good meal after a hard days work in the middle of the North Atlantic ocean. Eimskip has excellent chefs 10 GLOBAL NEWS

on board its vessels that have the job of feeding the hungry crew. Global News asked some of them to provide us with their favorite recipes for fish dishes.

EXPANDING OUR OPERATIONS IN NORWAY Norway plays an important role in Eimskip’s home market in the North Atlantic. Ever since the company was established in Tromsø in 1996, Eimskip Norway has expanded and acquired several strategically-important businesses in the market. Eimskip’s Norway employs (50 plus) people who work in seven offices scattered along the Norwegian coast: from Fredrikstad, in the south, to Ålesund, Sortland, Tromsø (the head office), Kirkenes, and all the way to the Russian port of Murmansk.

In addition to its transportation services, Eimskip Norway has been operating cold stores along the Norwegian coast for years. The company operates its own cold stores in Kirkenes, Tromsö, Sortland, and is in cooperation with the cold store Ålesund as well. Such facilities are well suited to Eimskip Norway’s operations, as most of the cargo transported from Norway to other destinations in Europe, Asia, or Africa consists of frozen or chilled seafood.vessel

Eimskip´s orange line links Norway and northwest Russia to Eimskip´s worldwide reefer services in an efficient manner.

Eimskip Norway’s newest investment was purchasing a 51% share in Tromsøterminalen a well-known cold storage company in Tromsø in August 2018. Tromsøterminalen is expected to expand within the cold store market, with an estimated 12,000 tons of refrigerated cargo being stored in Tromsø by the end of 2019. Tromsøterminalen is also scheduled to move its operations to a new and modern logistics center in Tromsø. This new logistics center will boast a cold storage capacity of 20,000 tons, a warehouse for dry and industrial cargo, a container area, while also offering office space for other companies in the fishing industry.

“The company’s goal is to be the supplier of choice for internationally-competitive, high-quality transportation and logistics services,” says Lára Konráðsdóttir, managing director of the Norwegian operation. “We focus on forwarding services, especially reefer forwarding. The customer contacts our team, and our team responds by combining Eimskip’s liner service and worldwide transport systems in order to offer the customer an excellent total logistics solution worldwide,” says Lára.

NO HAY, OKEY Every year, “unusual” shipments are loaded onto Eimskip’s vessels, such as odd-sized project cargo with extreme dimensions. Following an extremely dry and hot summer in southern Norway in 2018 where temperatures rose above 30 degrees the word “unusual” no longer seemed applicable; faced with the prospect of being unable to provide feed for their animals over

the winter, owing to dry fields, Norwegian farmers were forced to look to Iceland: 600 40 ft. containers of hay were carried from Iceland to Norway on Eimskip’s vessels to Fredrikstad this winter. With global temperatures on the rise, some wonder what kind of cargo the future will bring?

LAGARFOSS, GOÐAFOSS AND DETTIFOSS

Lagarfoss the seventh vessel of that name is Eimskip’s newest vessel, and it was built in China in 2014. The first Lagarfoss was Eimskip’s longest serving vessel, operating for 32 years, or from 1917 until 1949. Lagarfoss, like Bakkafoss, calls ports in Iceland, the Faroe Islands, the UK, and Northern Europe on the yellow line. It delivers fresh fish from the clean waters of the North Atlantic to markets in Europe.

Goðafoss the sixth vessel of that name was built in Denmark in 1995. The vessel came into service for Eimskip in 2000 and is still operating on the 12 GLOBAL NEWS

blue line. It calls ports in Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and Northern Europe.

The first Goðafoss was in Eimskip’s service from 1915 until 1916. Goðafoss is named after one of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls, located in the northeastern part of the country.

Dettifoss the fifth vessel of that name was built in Denmark in 1995. The vessel came into service for Eimskip in 2000, at the same time as its sister vessel, Goðafoss. Dettifoss calls ports in Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and Northern Europe and operates on the blue line.

EIMSKIP OPENS A NEW OFFICE IN THE CANARY ISLANDS On June 1st, 2018, Eimskip Logistics S.L. Spain expanded its service network by opening a new office in Las Palmas, Canary Islands.

Eimskip has hired Christophe Del Mestre as the Canaries’ branch manager.

Christophe has 20 years of extensive experience within the shipping and logistics market in the Canary Islands and in West Africa. The Las Palmas branch will focus on the seafood logistics concept and offer various freight-forwarding solutions, streamlining seafood-transportation solutions from the Canary Islands and West Africa to destinations worldwide.

With the opening of the Las Palmas office, Eimskip is once again establishing a new logistics platform focusing on perishable logistics, similar to its operations in Vigo, Spain. The port of Las Palmas which is a central link between Europe, Africa, and America is the leading seafood transhipment hub in the Mid-Atlantic, serving not only domestic and international customers, but other clients from neighbouring ports as well, such as Agadir (Morocco), Nouadhibou (Mauritania), and Dakar (Senegal). These ports are also key sites in the control of fishing operations in the Canary-Saharan fishing bank.

EIMSKIP UK: INVESTING IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY Eimskip UK is committed to its local community. Central to that commitment is the UK office’s support for local sports teams, many of whom are comprised of our employees’ children. One of the ways in which we help is by providing the teams with new sportswear (emblazoned with the Eimskip logo). We have also invested in sportswear for adults, which our employees wear when partaking in charitable events. Over the years, we have found that there are endless ways to support the local community. Eimskip is currently operating in Ho Chi Minh City and in the Binh Duong province, which are strategic locations for the distribution of goods in southern Vietnam. EIMSKIP’S CONTAINER FREIGHT STATION IN SWEDEN EXPANDED In April 2018, the offices of Eimskip Sweden were relocated to occupy the same building as the company’s container freight station. This consolidation was expected to improve internal communication and coordination, which, in turn, was expected to translate into better service for our customers.

The terminal, also called the CFS (the container freight station), has recently been modified: Two additional loading docks were added so that the CFS currently contains six loading bays, three of which are capable of handling a 10 ton load. Given that the volume of freight passing through the CFS almost doubled last summer, it was fortunate that these modifications were concluded in time.

Since 2018, Swedish exports have undergone considerable growth, as exporters have enjoyed a competitive advantage due to the low value of the Swed-

ish krona. This increase in exports although applying generally has been driven mainly by products such as timber, packaging material, building material, entrepreneurial machinery, and automobiles. Even though Sweden has exported relatively few automobiles, historically speaking, there has been a significant increase lately; Icelandic citizens and companies, for example, have begun to import more cars from Sweden, and Eimskip has played an important role: offering a comprehensive service that includes pick-up and customs clearing on both ends.

Eimskip Sweden is an AEO certified company operating a container freight station (CFS) classified as a bonded area, a fact that is greatly appreciated by our customers; we provide customs-clearing services for a number of Swedish companies of all sizes.

THE FISHPOND Visitors to our new office in Helsingborg, Sweden, will be greeted with something of an unusual sight: a moat-style pond with a depth of nearly two meters and a surface area of almost 100 m2. The fishpond engulfs half of the ground area surrounding the building so that visitors must cross a special bridge in order to enter. This engenders a feeling not unlike that of entering a castle (some have suggested).

To begin with, there were few fish in the pond but the population grew over time. Today, following this steady propagation, the fishpond is teeming with fish (although not quite comparable to the salmon “adventures” of 20 GLOBAL NEWS

our Norwegian cousins). The building’s proprietor feeds the fish twice a week, at which point the pond springs to life; it is as if the fish recognize the man by the figure he cuts above the water, or identify the peculiar vibration of his feet on the ground, for as soon as he steps foot upon the bank during “feeding” day, the fish become quite enthusiastic. Last summer, one of our employees proved that it was possible to catch the fish in the pond with one’s bare hands. Although requiring a good deal of patience combined with the ability to remain very still for some time the reward is well worth it: fish in one’s hand.

GULLFOSS: A NATIONAL GEM

For many years, the vessel Gullfoss was the Icelanders’ only means of transportation to mainland Europe. Whether they traveled as students on their way to university in Copenhagen, or as merchants, artists, or politicians everyone sailed with Gullfoss. For those who could afford to travel first class, Gullfoss was a luxurious means of passage; the parties that were held aboard the vessel, during its journeys to and from Europe, have been retold countless times, and the comings and goings of Gullfoss were such a spectacle in Reykjavík that the vessel’s passenger list was printed by local newspapers.

Still to this day, it is not uncommon for older Icelanders to reminisce about their first trips with Gullfoss, which are often described as exciting or romantic. There was music, there was dancing, and there was plenty of food and drink as Gullfoss made its way across the North Atlantic.

The Story of Gullfoss II On June 1st, 1939, Eimskip signed a contract with Burmeister & Wain in Copenhagen to build a new vessel to replace Gullfoss I. It took 11 years to complete Gullfoss’ construction, following delays owing to World War II. Gullfoss’ maiden voyage took place on April 27th, 1950 (the vessel was named Gullfoss II, but referred to as Gullfoss colloquially), and the vessel operated on a fixed schedule between Reykjavík, Copenhagen,

and Leith (Scotland). Gullfoss’ history was not without its mishaps, however; during its construction, the vessel caught fire three times, and again, the fourth time, while anchored at Burmeister & Wain’s shipyard in Copenhagen in 1963 (it took approximately three years to repair Gullfoss after the last fire). Besides operating in its capacity as a vessel, Gullfoss also played an important role during a rescue mission following the famous volcanic eruption in Vestmannaeyjar (a small island on the south coast of Iceland) in 1973. Later that year, Eimskip sold Gullfoss to Beirut, where it was renamed MS Leban. Later, Gulfoss was sold to Saudi Arabia, where it was once again renamed, this time MS Mecca. The vessel caught fire one last time and sank in the Red Sea. There were no casualties.

FAROE SHIP 100 YEARS The Faroe ship terminal in Torshavn

WHEN TIME IS OF PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE EVERY MONDAY NIGHT, SVARTFOSS EIMSKIP’S MULTIPURPOSE VESSEL, BOUND FOR SCRABSTER LEAVES THE PORT OF RUNAVÍK, THE CENTER OF THE FAROESE FISHING INDUSTRY, LOADED WITH FRESH FISH AND FRESH FARMED SALMON. EVERY OTHER WEEK, SVARTFOSS IS LOADED WITH PELAGIC FISH FOR CUSTOMERS IN THE NORTH OF THE NETHERLANDS. As Eimskip’s transportation specialists are organizing empty containers at the terminal, a Faroese long liner is hauling aboard the last of its long lines in Faroese waters. With a full hold, the crew heads back home, hopeful for a good price at the market.

Some days are good. Everything goes as planned. Other days, not so. The sea gives and takes, as well. The captain, heading home from days at sea, knows that the right time to discharge the ship’s precious cargo is when everything is at the ready, when everything has been planned, at precisely the moment when the ship enters the harbor.

The fish market doesn’t just depend on buyers and sellers, but also on how quickly fresh fish can be loaded, shipped, and delivered to the many international buyers of Faroese fish. It goes without saying that the fresher the fish, the better the price.

Over the last few years, cod and haddock fishing in Faroese waters has been rather poor for long liners, while the coalfish catch has been reasonable. This autumn, however, saw considerable growth in cod and haddock catches. This increase also means a considerable increase of activity in Runavík. At the same time that a vessel is being loaded with fresh salmon, headed for the global sushi market, the local Faroe Ship staff must keep an expert eye on the many fresh fish landings. It must orchestrate the dispatch of this special catch of cod and haddock as quickly as possible to ensure top market price.

This complicated balancing act is a challenge, but its successful accomplishment is the hallmark of Faroe Ship the Faroese company with the most vessels; the most containers; the strongest and largest transport chain; the company that can dispatch a local fisherman’s last few kilos of cod and haddock straight from the fishing grounds and onward to the international market. No cargo is too large and none too small.

When time and speed are of the utmost importance, every sales agent, every driver, every foreman on the quay, every reach stacker, indeed, even the captain on the bridge, everyone, plays a vital role in bringing the freshest fishvesselarguably the best in the world to the world’s hungry markets.

Every Monday night, a vessel departs Runavík. Aboard that vessel is the best fish that the Faroe Islands has to offer. Timing is everything.

Skipafelagid Honors the Memory of William Heinesen

For over 30 years, William Heinesen the internationally renowned poet and author was a board member of Skipafelagið Føroyar (Faroe Ship). Together with the chairman of the board, Mr. Edward Mitens, William Heinesen provided great support to the art and artists of the Faroe Islands. While his artistic exploits have been well documented, his lengthy and faithful service to Skipafelagið Føroyar is not as well known.

William Heinesen is, undoubtedly, the Faroe Islands’ most internationally acclaimed author and artist. More than any other Faroese artist, William Heinesen introduced the world to Faroese literature with his best selling novels and short stories, based in large part in his hometown of Tórshavn.

William Heinesen’s artistic corpus encompasses novels, short stories, poems, paintings, music, and cut paper art but his path to renowned artistic acclaim was far from destined. William’s father, Zacharias Heinesen, was a successful businessman and merchant, and it was assumed that young William would take over the family business; however, In 1917, William was admitted to a Danish business college where it became clear that his inherent artistic talents would be impossible to restrain. In Copenhagen, he was quickly drawn into and inspired by the artistic environment of Copenhagen.

He published his first collection of poems only 21 years old, in 1921.

Rather than to assume control over the family business, William became a full time artist instead, achieving success both internationally and in the

Faroe Islands at an early age. In 1980, to his everlasting joy, he was named Tórshavn’s first “Citizen of Honor.” At the zenith of his career in 1987, he was awarded the “little Nobel prize” by the Swedish Academy, which was both an honor for him, personally, and, by extension, the Faroe Islands as well.

Skipafelagið Føroyar was originally founded by a group of Faroese merchants who longed for a better connection to the outside world. At the time, the transportation of freight and passengers was sporadic, and sailing to the Faroe Islands was not the highest priority of the DFDS (the Danish Steamship Company, which was the only company sailing to the Faroe Islands at the beginning of the 20th century). Among the founders of Skipafelagið was William’s father, Zacharias Heinesen, a fact that made William keenly aware of the important struggle to establish a Faroese shipping company from an early age.

In 1946, William was elected to the board of Skipafelagið Føroyar, assuming his father’s position following his untimely death. Even though Skipafelagið struggled to make ends meet during its formative years, considerable attention was devoted to the arts by many of its founders, including Zacharias Heinesen and the chairman of the board, Edward Mitens. Together they provided financial support for Faroese artists and aided in the publishing of new books.

Still to this day, Skipafelagið is honored by the memory of this great man and his history with the company.

LOOKING BACK ON 30 YEARS

Eimskip Reaches Milestone in Newfoundland

2019 will mark the 30th anniversary of Eimskip’s first port call in Newfoundland and Labrador, through the port of Argentia. Although some would probably assume that fish exports were the motivating factor behind Eimskip’s first journey to the area this was not the case; in actuality, it was an American naval station in Argentia (Naval Station Argentia) that spearheaded port calls to the province. At the peak of its operations, the naval station was home to over 20,000 American soldiers, and although the station was decommissioned in 1994, general goods from the US destined for the station were the primary cargo arriving in the port of Argentia. This initial cargo laid the groundwork for Eimskip’s presence in the province and for the opening of our office in St. John’s in 1990.

In addition to the base cargo for the Naval Station Argentia, there was also a lucrative cod fishery market with significant exports to Europe. This provided Eimskip the stable flow of cargo that was required to expand its operations.

With the 1992 Cod Moratorium, there was a drop in exports until the Canadian and Flemish Cap shrimp fishery boom in the mid-’90s, wherein a majority of the offshore shrimp harvested was transported by Eimskip to peeling plants in Iceland.

As with most primary industries, things change over time which meant that Eimskip needed to evolve too. The commodities that we ship has changed, and so has the frequency of our port calls. During the 1990s, imports grew

steadily with oil and gas projects like Hibernia, Terra Nova, and White Rose, through to Vale’s nickel smelting plant in late 2000s, and onto the most recent Hebron and White Rose extension projects. Although there has been a recent downturn in projects due to low oil prices globally, the province has witnessed two large-scale oil and gas projects that will provide further import opportunities into 2025. Furthermore, mining projects such as Canada Fluorspar and Vale Underground, along with the Grieg Seafarms aquaculture project, inspire optimism about the future.

It has now been 30 years since Eimskip’s first port call to Newfoundland and Labrador. Today, we are offering weekly service to the province for the first time in our history, with volumes continuing to rise.

The province of Newfoundland and Labrador has always been an area defined by transition and change, which reflects how Eimskip has conducted its business in the province. Eimskip continues to evolve, finding success in its commitment to diversity and in its dedication to evolving its operations in step to the province’s ever-changing industry and economy. Amid all of these changes, however, one thing remains constant: our commitment to the province to providing the best possible service to the many businesses and industries that call Newfoundland and Labrador home.
