Nick Abbott - Bio

Nick started racing in 1994, with a passion for cars he quite liked the idea of racing something. Nick and a friend looked at building a rally car which started out buying a set of twin dellorto carburetors, however this never went any further. After that Nick visited a local kart track where they were hosting a European Championship, from this point he was completely hooked. "I had watched lots of racing and was always really interested in rallying with Stig Blomqvist as my favourite driver (who I later got to meet whilst karting in the live action arena at the Autosport Show), but I had never seen anything with racing as close and intense as karting. That was it, I was hooked" Nick bought a second hand kart and a new engine and began racing. It took 12 months of non finishing or accidents before the penny dropped and Nick started to move up the order before taking his first win.

2

Nick while still racing started up a race team and became and instructor running drivers at British and European rounds. Along the way Nick has seen the likes of Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton progress from karting to F1. Nick has also been involved in chassis, brake and tyre testing as well as technical support for a number of teams from single seaters, saloon cars and bikes as well as supporting drivers in Valencia in Formula BMW and working with some top names in motorsport. It all started again after British Rallycross Champion Tony Lynch asked Nick to help him round the Donington track about circuit racing. That was it, Nick was hooked again and after a test in the Mini Cooper S Rallycross car its all started again!

Mini Testing 2021 BMW Mini Cooper

Having raced the BMW Mini before albeit in Rallycross, the car is very nimble with a very stiff chassis with front wheel drive and 6 speed manual gearbox. With a wheel in each corner it really is exciting to race and can very frequently be seen lifting a rear wheel in the air through the corners. The fans can really relate to these iconic cars with so many people already driving them on the roads. The championship is going to be fast and full of action packed moments with a wide variation of age and experience on a full grid making great TV coverage seen by a very large global audience.

10

Ginetta Testing 2021 Ginetta GTA

After testing the Ginetta GTA in December 2020 I can really say this is an experience and exciting car to race. With its paddle flat shift gearbox, purpose built chassis and 50 / 50 weight distribution the car is very sensitive on track and a real racers car to drive. You can feel every input you feed through the steering and pedals and the feedback is fantastic. Being rear wheel drive it is a true drivers car and will deliver some great racing to watch in 2021. It is a physically demanding car and demands the respect as you squeeze and balance the throttle and steering input. With the 270bhp and only 1100kg the corners are coming up very quick, racing will be close and action packed especially in the damp and wet conditions.

Focus Cup Racing 2020

With the way 2020 has been with Covid, and the struggles everyone has endured, we have been working hard with our existing sponsors and partners to help their businesses grow. After the race being postponed in November due to lockdown, you can imagine how excited we were to finally get out and race for the last round in December 2020 at Donington Park. After arriving a day early so we could get a seat fitting sorted, the next day was torrential rain and a difficult day. Track conditions and mechanical problems plagued the whole day with no real setup before qualifying on Saturday.

16

Donington Park That’s Racing in December For You

Qualifying was a suck it and see what happens and considering we lost most of Friday wasn't too bad. Unfortunately due to more mechanical issues throughout the day we were certainly up against it but made good headway and some good starts that looked like could be reasonable finishes until mechanical issues kicked in during each race. At least we managed to get out on track before the end of the year and have done a good job for our sponsors and partners. We are now looking forward for to new challenge in 2021 on the elite motorsport calendar. You can read the full report here

Ginetta GTA Testing

Just after the last Focus Cup race at Donington i received a phone call from Nathan at Century Motorsport. I used to race with Nathan a number of years ago and he now runs a successful Ginetta and GT race team. I had been speaking with Nathan previously about Ginetta and the possibility of racing in the championship. Its Saturday afternoon and the conversation is can i get to Donington on Monday to have a test in the Ginetta GTA? A little short notice but i am not going to miss the chance of getting a test in the new Ginetta GTA, so with the help of Century motorsport and Cars i am on my way back to Donington.

20

Ginetta GTA Testing

Donington

Arriving mid morning it was cold and wet (no change there), time to sign on and get suited up, have a look round the car and have a chat with the team about the session before lunch. After lunch and after the car is checked over i climb into the car, get strapped in while the engineer runs through all the controls. Its a dashboard of buttons on the steering wheel and on another separate dash to remember. Read the full report here

Rallycross 2017 Rallycross

Officially speaking, Rallycross is a speed event taking place on a permanent track consisting of both sealed and unsealed surfaces (mainly tarmac and loose surfaces). Unofficially, Rallycross is the wildchild of motor sport. The offspring of a liaison between circuit racing and rallying. A place where it’s kosher to use the kerbs and grass. Where sideways is good, and where fun and excitement is top of the agenda and is massively growing across the world with teams, followers and global TV coverage.

22

Rallycross—All The Racing Skills

Full on Adrenaline

The races are generally between 3 and 5 laps and over 3 races during the day to determine grid positions for the final. With that in mind the driver has to be fully committed from the green light to be in with a chance of a good grid position for the final giving great frills and spills in each race for all those watching. So imagine yourself racing flat out round a circuit then onto gravel and having to recover on to tarmac while fighting off the completion. THAT’S RALLYCROSS!!!

23

BTRDA Rallycross

Round 1

In At The Deep En

Well! After a 10 year break from racing and having never raced Rallycross before, it was in at the deep end with only 1 test session 2 weeks earlier for the first round of the BTRDA Rallycross season for round 1 at Blyton Park.

4:30am start to get to the track to meet the team (Lucas Oils Team Geriatric – 2016 British Champions) and get ready for scrutineering and drivers briefing before practice. In typical British weather it was a damp start to the day and I spent the practice session tip toeing around on slicks trying to find some sort of grip and then back to the pits ready for the first race. After the first few races the track had started to dry so it was looking like slicks, then just before being called to the grid it started to rain slightly so a tyre change was made.

24

s Round 1 - Blyton Park

nd - Part 1 Lined up on the grid the 5 second board goes up and we are all ready to drop the clutch and race. A good clean start and my grid position puts me on the outside for the first corner, but tucking in behind sees a good clean first lap and I am with the pack (one thing to remember is whilst my previous racing over at least 10 laps allows you to work out your race for a couple of laps and then keep picking other drivers off, Rallycross does not allow this as you only get 4 laps in the race, so it pretty much be on it from the line and get to the front as fast as you can to get away). Lap 2 I start dropping back and by lap 3 and 4 I am sliding around on melting rubber. Wrong choice of pressures and inexperience on the gravel. So back to the pits and get ready for race 2. Race 2 back to slicks on the front and cuts on the rear. This time starting on the inside the 5 second board goes up and not one of my best moments, selected 3rd gear instead of 1st and stalled leaving me embarrassingly sat on the line. Anyway back into first gear and off we go and catching the pack back up within 1 lap, ok so now time to get stuck in, over the jump and then hit the pothole in the track that had been getting worse all day and the car now starts to become very heavy on the steering and really struggling to go round corners and under rotation developing into over rotation. It really was a shocker and back in the pits that’s what was bent and needed to be

25

BTRDA Rallycross

Round 1

In At The Deep En

Race 3, middle of the grid and the 5 second board goes out again and with a bit of OCD making sure I was in first gear I had a good start off the line and all tucked in for a good race. Everyone raced really tight lines and I was just hanging on for 2 laps until I started dropping back with the same issues of understeer to over steer and the added problem of fuel starvation through the corners. So back to the pits to sort the suspension and fuel problem ready for the final. That was it, needed to finish on the pace and having a good race so we lined up on the grid, final 5 second board, definitely in first gear for the start and a good clean start on the run up to the first corner where I was a little bemused to see one car take a different line completely outside the white lines of the track, but hey, maybe this doesn’t matter in Rallycross so lets get on with the race. 5 laps this time and the car is great, still losing out with my inexperience on the gravel and never using the handbrake in the hairpins I am with 1st and 2nd and the race is on. The next few laps everyone drives tight lines and there is nowhere to get pass on this tight narrow track. On the last lap it gets tighter and I am waiting for 1st and 2nd to make a mistake and ready to take advantage, into the second hairpin onto the gravel I get up the inside and ready to squeeze the throttle but such a tight line leaves me not being able to get on the power and lacking grip and back behind 2nd place so one last chance on the brakes into the next where 1st and 2nd almost come together allowing me to line it up for the final corner, it was going to be close and hoping 1st and 2nd come together and pick up the pieces. Well it nearly happened and I was ready up the inside but just not quite enough over the line as it was an extremely close 123. Great race after the issues through the day, happy with the pace for my first time out and promising for the next round. Big thanks to Pemberton Tyres, Tony Lynch and of course family for all the support

Some Of The Cars 2020 Racing

28

A Season With The Brakes On 2020 was a very strange year for everyone. We were ready to go racing at the end of March like most others before all the brakes around the country were put on bringing everything to a halt. Through lockdown we were still working hard with our partners to find new ways of doing business and still managing to bring in new customers and generate revenue streams. Once the season did start back up we made the decision to not race and continue working with partners and concentrate on business due to all the restrictions still in place. This proved the right thing to do as the race season was stopping and starting and we felt we could do a better job concentrating on our partners and securing more partners for the 2021 season when we would be part of elite motorsport with live TV coverage as part of the British GT and BTCC championships. So that was it, we started testing various cars for various championships. Towards the end of the year we are ready to race the ford focus before it being cancelled and then finally the race went ahead in December. From there we tested the Ginetta GTA and then this left us with 2 main championships to run with in elite motorsport for 2021. This will be the Mini Coopers and Ginetta GTA. Both championships are high profile with global audiences and are perfect for putting your company and brand in front of the global stage with millions of viewers and fans. We have worked hard to make sure we deliver a return for our existing partners and new. Join us on the grid in 2021 for an exciting year of adrenaline packed motorsport for your business and clients.
