The EI Cure Project, a global not-for-profit founded in April 2023, is pleased to announce the 2024 Research Grant Award Winners and their projects:
1) Professor Matthias Schmuth and Doctor Daniela Ortner-Torbider (3 year PhD)“Delivery of keratinocyte-targeting nanocarriers loaded with gene-editing tools to skin”

2) Professor John McGrath and Doctor Joanna Jacków-Malinowska (3 year PhD)“Development and testing of gene editing for Epidermolytic Ichthyosis”
- King’s College London, UK
3) Professor Wei-Li Di and Professor Gill Elliott (2 year Post-Doc project)“Development of topical gene therapy for congenital ichthyosis using herpes-simplex virus-based engineered virus-like particles (eVLPs)”
- University College London and University of Surrey, UK
4) Professor Cristina Has and Doctor Leonie Frommherz (1 year project)“Influence of inflammation parameters and signalling cascades for potential therapeutic approaches in epidermolytic ichthyosis: A Comprehensive Analysis Integrating Proteomic and RNA-Seq Data”
- Ludwig Maximillian University of Munich and University Hospital Freiburg, Germany
5) Doctor Antoni Gostynski and Doctor Otte Borghouts (2 year project)“Core Outcome Set for Inherited Ichthyosis: The COSII Study”
- Maastricht University Medical Centre, Netherlands
The 5 funded research projects will help to:
● Develop a topical-delivery approach to gene-editing for the skin;
● Better understand the biology of EI, identify potential medications for drug repurposing, and identify which individuals might benefit from these medications;
● Develop a Core Outcome Set to enable EI symptoms to be categorised and measured in a systematic way that can be universally recognised

All the projects will start between 1st October 2024 and 1st February 2025, and then the researchers will provide an update every 6 months. Updates will be posted on the EI Cure Project website, with general news updates available weekly on our social media pages.
