With these words, Bishop Doyle blessed the new Crain-Galloway Center for the Arts and set it apart for the good use of the students, faculty, and staff of Episcopal High School.

Coach Matt Fox led Knights through a “Becoming a Grill Master” elective during Interim Term. Through a combination of demonstrations, practical exercises, and insider knowledge, students learned everything from selecting the right cuts of meat to mastering the perfect grill marks.

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear EHS Family, When we finalized our plans for construction of the new Benitez Chapel, we quickly realized that this project would be different from any of the other seven we’ve lived through as we’ve completed the campus master plan. We are in Chapel every day, all 1,000 of us, and while we are blessed with a number of spaces on campus to accommodate this number, none is particularly well suited to Daily Chapel. The chaplains began to refer to the two years of planned construction as “our time in the wilderness,” and, in fact, it began that way with three days in a row each in a different space: first the Underwood Theatre, then Scurlock Gym and finally Alkek Gym. As I write, we are setting up the Rotunda in the Hildebrand Athletic Center for a combined Baptism/Confirmation Chapel at which ten members of our community will be welcomed more fully into the church: seven current students, two members of the faculty, and one recent graduate included. There has been a great deal of physical change at EHS recently, but through it all we continue to live our Mission to its fullest, and we continue to thrive.

At the Blessing of the Crain-Galloway Center for the Arts earlier this spring, Bishop Doyle prayed that it be sanctified for the expression of creativity and the celebration of beauty, asking God to inspire and illuminate all who enter its doors, echoing the reading from Exodus that reminded us that artistic gifts are themselves divine gifts. The CGCA, like the Benitez Chapel as it was and as it will be, like all our buildings, is designed to help our students and faculty be their best selves so that they might go forth into the world to act as a light to that world, just as our Founders Lacy Crain and Joe Galloway continue to be a light through their generosity. Seniors Sofia Kennedy and Richard Agyeman-Yeboah model this truth, each inspired by teachers like Bob Matthews and Sole Toriello (all six are featured within).

This spring we likewise celebrate several notable retirements. Karen Foster, Sheila Kelly, and Gvahn Nelson, who collectively embody nearly a century of service to EHS (95 years in total), have all announced that this year will be their last at EHS. And Richard Howell ’01 concludes his third and final year of service as Executive Chair of the Board of Trustees, having guided us through the School’s reentry from COVID, the completion of the CGCA, and the launch of the new Chapel.

If people make the place, and I believe that they do, these are spectacular people, each of whom has served EHS fully and faithfully throughout. We continue to thrive through their, and all of our, collective efforts.

ARTISTRY THROUGH EMPATHY Sofia Kennedy ’26

Bright Knights

Sofia Kennedy's time at EHS has been about allowing curiosity to propel her into joyfully trying new things. She describes getting “goosebumps” after touring EHS as a prospective eighth-grader and deciding to attend because she saw it as “the perfect place to figure out what I wanted to do.” As a brand new Knight, Sofia describes her younger self as being “a bit intimidated by the social and outgoing student body” but found that “the energy of others at EHS has helped me be comfortable expressing myself. I’ve gotten to experiment with what it’s like to speak—literally and metaphorically—and I’ve gotten more confident through all of the ways I’ve been pushed out of my comfort zone at EHS.” Sofia’s teachers see an elegant and powerful journey toward confidence in Sofia, too. Spanish teacher Ms. Toriello, who has taught Sofia in multiple classes, recognized a young Sofia as “reserved and discreet” but notes that over time, Sofia “began to display her talents, abilities, and values. This process of growth and transformation allowed Sofia to become a self-confident young woman, aware of her potential and willing to share it with those around her.” Similarly, ETV teacher Mr. Milani notes the impact of watching a freshman Sofia’s animation and being “stopped in my tracks as if I had never taught someone with such raw talent!”

Cross-curricular involvement within the Arts Pillar came naturally for Sofia. A talented visual artist, actor, dancer, and movie maker, Sofia overflows with imagination and innovative energy. When deciding which of the many arts courses to take, Sofia says, “I had to remind myself that I’m at EHS to do new things. I already know how to paint and draw, and those things can still be a comfort to me while I learn new skills in theatre and ETV.” Sofia’s journey through the ETV ranks began with hand-drawn animations and evolved into directing, producing, and acting roles. About this, Sofia says, “I’ve always loved storytelling and I want to understand all sides, so I embraced live-action directing, editing, producing, and screenwriting. In all my ETV projects, I’ve grown through trying new skills; and by doing theatre and ETV at the same time, I’ve learned that all the parts of a production are equally important. Everyone on the cast and crew has to give 100%.”

Dance teacher and musical choreographer Ms. Pfeifer recalls helping Sofia bring one of her short films to life: “Sofia took the initiative in casting an EHS student dancer in the lead role of the short film and worked with the dancer to create choreography that would match her vision for the film. I was incredibly impressed not only by Sofia’s artistic viewpoint as a filmmaker, but also by her leadership as a director. Sofia knew exactly what moments she wanted to capture and where she needed the camera to be to bring her ideas to life.”

Though Sofia has found purpose and confidence as a leader, she also relishes the teamwork of being part of an ensemble, noting that her involvement in theatre has “helped me be louder— theatre was the first community I clicked with at EHS.” Sofia is nourished not only by the growth she has experienced, but in watching her friends and peers experience the same: “It is really emotional to see my peers and friends totally in-character during shows; having those moments of connection with friends not as themselves but as characters is uncanny and so special.”

The passion that pushed Sofia so confidently into the performing and visual arts has also propelled her through challenging academic classes, as she has shouldered a full load of AP and Honors courses across all of her four years. As a fluent Spanish speaker, Sofia has participated in the most difficult Spanish classes offered, managing to enter Spanish III Honors during her freshman year and ending that year with a 98th percentile score on the National Spanish Exam, earning the commensurate gold medal. Ms. Toriello feels that Sofia’s empathy allowed her to achieve this success in language studies: “Her passion and talent in filmmaking and theatre helped her to put herself faithfully in the shoes of others, which is important when studying culture and language. I was unceasingly impressed by how meticulous Sofia was in her work.

She lived up to her own high expectations and didn't work for a grade but to gain a deeper understanding.” For Sofia, the pursuit of such high-level language skills is rooted in a desire to stay connected to her family: “I love speaking Spanish at home, but I live in an English-speaking community, so I take Spanish classes to better connect with my community and family, specifically my grandmother. Studying Spanish feels very me.”

Sofia’s advisor Ms. Bowman describes her as “an artist down to her very soul” and says that “in the last four years, Sofia has learned how to turn the empathy inherent in her artistry into compassionate leadership.” This rings true in Sofia’s membership in multiple honor societies including leadership roles in many. Sofia says that participating in honor societies “gives me direction and a sense of community.”

Looking forward to pursuing film studies at the university level, Sofia says that while she has learned and grown so much at EHS, what she will cherish the most is “learning the importance of surrounding yourself with a community of people who support you. My friends, family, and teachers throughout my time at EHS have been nothing but supportive of me, and it makes a world of difference.”

Bright Knights

LEADING WITH A SMILE Richard Agyeman-Yeboah ’26 Richard Agyeman-Yeboah stands out on the EHS campus, not only as a leader, scholar, and athlete, but as the person whom students and adults alike never pass without his smiling and greeting them, in true Richardstyle. His peers and mentors all agree that what sets Richard apart is that he puts others before himself and is kind and present in the moment. His advisor Ms. Owens says, “Richard has room in his heart for everyone he meets. He is truly dedicated to soaking up each moment in time.”

When asked why he maintains such a positive demeanor, Richard says, “If I see someone struggling or feeling down, it’s important to me to lift them up.”

For Richard, the decision to attend EHS was made easier by the positive experience of his older brother. Richard says that in watching his brother thrive at EHS, he felt like “the community would be a place where I could thrive and ‘Stand Out.’” The transition from a public middle school to EHS was something Richard was initially nervous about, but he says, “Teachers quickly helped make the transition less stressful by helping me feel comfortable and learn good study tactics.” Coming from a family of accountants, Richard arrived at EHS excited to delve deeper into math and science and says that beyond the curriculum, EHS has taught him “how to reach out, even to adults.” Mr. Codrington remarks, “I’ve been fortunate enough to have Richard in class, and what sticks out to me most is that he is always where his feet are. He will carry this tenacity and work ethic with him wherever he goes.”

Affability is a key component to Richard’s leadership, ensuring that he pushes others to lean into fostering kindness in our community by doing it himself. As a four-year member of the Varsity Boys Soccer team, Richard entered his senior year as captain of a three-time SPC-champion team, but victory is not the only thing Richard helped to encourage within the soccer program. Soccer coach John Drexel says, “Richard is a driven and inclusive student who consistently demonstrates kindness and hopefulness in all he does. Richard’s inclusive nature fosters a positive and supportive team environment, and his drive inspires those around him to strive for their best.” Coach Drexel notes that off the field, Richard has helped create a soccer team that sits together at break and lunch, and that no player, no matter his spot on the roster, is excluded. Further, Richard ensures that the boys’ team fully and enthusiastically supports girls’ soccer by showing up to games and cheering loudly. About his involvement in campus life, Richard says, “I try to see myself in others, and I try to push my teammates to be involved in campus life across all Four Pillars.”

Casey Lonnecker says, “Richard is always willing to share his story about being nervous to attend EHS and worried that he wouldn’t ‘fit in.’ After four years, we can all confidently say that Richard never ‘fit in’–he has always embodied the EHS motto ‘Stand Out!’” There is a place for everyone at EHS, and Richard has found his in groups like Student Council, DIA, and Students of Service.

A clear pattern emerges: Richard loves to invest in the growth, sanctity, and generously-spirited joys of his communities at EHS and beyond. Students of Service was the first organization to feed Richard’s desire to give back. He has been a member of SOS all four years and in his senior year has become the lead organizer for the environment ministry and has received awards for accruing many service hours. But Richard does not see the number of hours as the victory. In fact, he loves that at EHS, “service is not just about hours or resumes, but about seeing a change and positive impact. Giving back is part of the EHS culture.” After SOS, Richard got plugged into DIA and as a senior is now the vice president. As a DIA leader, Richard feels that he “can tell parts of my story that people might otherwise not ask about.” He notes that DIA has grown rapidly at EHS in the last few years and says, “We have been able to showcase worldwide diversity, not just diverse American cultures. Amplifying this helps me feel empowered as I go forward to continue stewarding cultural awareness in the world.”

It took a bit longer for Richard to find a place on Student Council, being selected by his peers his junior year as class vice president and entering his senior year as student body vice president, but Richard feels as if these roles allowed him to steward the same important, widespread change at EHS that he’s so passionate about: “I joined STUCO because I wanted to be a voice for those who aren’t heard. I wanted to help problems get solved.”

Director of Campus Life Ms. Lindloff says, “Richard consistently cares about others and strives to leave EHS better than he found it. He wants every Knight to have the absolute best EHS experience possible and expresses gratitude for the opportunity.

Richard actively helps EHS to be kinder, more accepting, and more empathetic through his collaboration with his peers, his willingness to build connections, and his ability to make those around him comfortable. He is a joyful and inclusive leader who reminds me daily of what a special place EHS is.”

As to what it means to be a Knight, Richard says, “Being a Knight means expressing yourself at the highest level possible, whether that's in the classroom, on the field, on the stage, etc. Being a Knight doesn’t just stop after we walk the stage, but it is something that stays with us forever.”

KNIGHTS STAND OUT | ATHLETICS Girls and Boys Soccer Dominate the Winter Season The winter athletic season was another one for the record books at EHS as both the Girls and Boys Soccer teams captured SPC Championship titles.

The Varsity Girls Soccer team returned from Dallas with another SPC Championship trophy as the Knights defeated St. Stephen’s 3-2 in penalty kicks in the SPC 4A Championship game. The Knights earned the #1 seed in the tournament thanks to an impressive regular season which featured a perfect 6-0 record in South Zone play. The Knights defeated #8 seed St. John’s 3-2 in the opener and #6 seed Hockaday 2-0 in the semifinal. In the championship match, the Knights overcame a 0-2 deficit to force overtime. After a scoreless overtime, the Knights scored the game-winning penalty kick on their sixth attempt.

The Varsity Boys Soccer team earned its fourth consecutive SPC title with a thrilling 1-0 win over St. Stephen’s in front of a terrific crowd at Awty International School. The Knights, the #1 seed in the 4A bracket, defeated St. John’s 4-0 in the semifinal before rain forced the championship game to move to Houston.

The Knights enjoyed a historic season as they finished the season undefeated and did not allow a goal in SPC play.

In other winter SPC action, the Varsity Boys Basketball team upset #2 seed St. Mark’s 58-55 in the 4A semifinal before falling to Houston Christian in the championship game. Wrestling enjoyed a strong showing in Ft. Worth and finished third overall in the SPC Championship tournament. Both the Girls and Boys Swimming and Diving teams celebrated outstanding achievements throughout the weekend as the girls finished fourth and the boys sixth in the 4A division. The Varsity Girls Basketball team rebounded from a tough opening-round loss to St. Stephen’s and finished the season with impressive wins over Duchesne (50-15) and Hockaday (57-23) to finish fifth.

The spring season launched an impressive start as the Knights worked to defend their SPC Championships in Softball, Girls Track and Field, and Boys Track and Field. Spring SPC results can be found on social media and the School website. Tournaments took place after print deadline.

THE BLESSING OF THE CRAIN-GALLOWAY CENTER FOR THE ARTS

On February 19, Episcopal High School celebrated the dedication of the Crain-Galloway Center for the Arts, marking a milestone shaped by years of prayer, vision, and faithful generosity.

Gathered on the Ellipse, the student body joined Founders, trustees, faculty, staff, and generous friends to give thanks and praise for a building that stands as a visible commitment to the Arts Pillar, providing a dedicated home where students can explore the performing and visual arts at the highest level while deepening their intellectual and spiritual growth.

The service reflected the School’s enduring spiritual foundation.

Prayers were offered for students—that they would grow in mind, heart, and service; for faculty and staff—that their daily work would be guided by clarity and compassion; for families and tradespeople whose dedication brought the CGCA to life; and for benefactors whose generosity will bear fruit for generations.

Gratitude was also lifted for future projects, entrusting the School’s continued growth to God’s steady guidance.

Through their remarkable generosity and enduring partnership, what began as a bold vision has become a vibrant reality at the heart of our campus. Because of them, students will discover their voices, grow in confidence, and experience the joy of artistic expression for years to come. We are profoundly grateful for the trust they placed in this effort and for the lasting legacy their life-changing contribution has established within our community.

A reading from Exodus recalled Bezalel, filled “with ability, intelligence, and knowledge, and every kind of skill” to create artistry for sacred purpose—a fitting reminder that artistic gifts are themselves divine gifts. In dedicating the building, Bishop Doyle prayed that the Crain-Galloway Center for the Arts be

Founders Lacy Crain and Joe Galloway were honored for the extraordinary difference they have made in the life of Episcopal High School and in the lives of our students. Their belief in EHS—and in the transformative power of the Arts—did far more than support a project; it created opportunity, inspiration, and possibility for generations of students.

A reception in the Wallace Lobby followed, as the community stepped inside a space that will nurture imagination, confidence, and collaboration for generations of Knights. The Crain-Galloway Center for the Arts now stands not only as a remarkable facility, but as a testament to what faith and community can build together at EHS.

AN EVENING AT THE CRAIN-GALLOWAY CENTER FOR THE ARTS In early March, the EHS Arts Pillar hosted An Evening at the Crain-Galloway Center for the Arts. This immersive event invited our community to tour the building and experience how students interact with the 60,000 square feet of Arts spaces.

The evening was a smashing success with tremendous positive reaction to the gorgeous new facilities and the opportunity to see students at work. Guests were particularly impressed with the overall scale and finish of the spaces as well as the extremely welcoming and flexible new performance space, Sarofim Hall.

Each room came alive as our Knight-artists showcased their work and the creative spaces these walls provide!

The final Community Advent Chapel was held in December before Christmas Break. We are so grateful to the EHS families, Founders, Trustees, and Alumni who joined us for this special evening. We will always carry the spirit of the original Chapel in our hearts, treasuring the memories of our time together in this space.

INSPIRATION TO DAILY CHAPEL BECOME A LIGHT IN THE WORLD:

THE BENITEZ CHAPEL DAILY CHAPEL THROUGH THE YEARS

Since the School’s earliest days, students and faculty have gathered together in the Benitez Chapel each morning to worship, to reflect, to celebrate, to mourn, and to be as one in community. Chapel is where we celebrated birthdays in the earliest days, including the morning when founding chaplain The Reverend Steve Kinney wheeled science teacher Robin Schuster down the center aisle of the nave in a wheelchair to celebrate her fortieth birthday! Chapel is where Chaplain Kinney tossed potatoes to the gathered students and faculty during his homily on respecting differences. Chapel is where we gathered on September 11, 2001 to hear the news of the attacks in New York, D.C., and Pennsylvania and where Chaplain Flo Ray discarded her prepared homily to talk instead about standing up to terror and respecting our neighbors. Chapel is where we celebrated the season of Advent each December with an evening service of lessons and carols, in the early days including students, faculty, and families, and always beginning with the hymn, “O Come, O Come Emmanuel.” Alumna Sharifa Rhodes-Pitts ’96, tells us that she named her son Emmanuel in part from her memories of Advent Chapel.

Longtime science teacher John Flanagan remembers the music.

He was part of the choir for each Advent Chapel and sang his first solo only three months after he arrived in 1990. He remembers the memorial service for Lucy Allibone ’96, who died in a car accident as a sophomore. To honor Lucy, whose name means light, Chaplain Dub Brooks chose the hymn “I want to walk as a child of the light.” Four days after September 11, he remembers the chaplains reconfiguring the Chapel chairs into concentric circles in order to hold a Quaker Chapel where anyone could speak. A Muslim student said the Chapel was where he felt safe, and a

young woman stood to sing “Amazing Grace.” For Flanagan, “It’s not the space; it’s the people I’ve shared my life with.”

Longtime biology teacher Karen Foster compares going to Chapel every day to going to your grandmother’s house, a place that is warm, safe, and familiar. Anchored by the stained-glass windows, the banners, and the cross, Chapel is the respite in the rhythm of the day. She recalls Chapel as our refuge and our joy, remembering both the sadness after the Challenger explosion and the jubilance of the Salvation Army Christmas Gospel Choir.

Flanagan and Foster agree that going forward, although the space may be different, the Gospel and the message remain the same.

As Reverend Callaham so eloquently reminds us, “Chapel is [the] place where our community gathers to be itself, all of us together, every day.” Indeed, it is the bedrock on which the School rests.

OUR LAST DAY IN CHAPEL: “SO VERY SAD. SO VERY EXCITING.” On December 10, 2025, as students and faculty gathered in the Benitez Chapel for the last time, Head of School Ned Smith reminded us what the Chapel, and indeed the School, are all about. Reading from the Gospel of John, “And the word became flesh and lived among us...full of grace and truth,” he explained the School’s very purpose.

“This building and its successor, indeed all our buildings, are designed to be expressions of this same simple truth, designed to bring God, through Jesus, to you. Each of you. Each of us.

We build as we do to inspire you to learn and grow into your best selves so that you, too, will one day go forth into the world, full of grace and truth, to act as a light to all people.”

“This Chapel is a physical expression of our Mission; it is also where we talk and think together about this Mission; and it is most importantly where we live this Mission, gathering as we do together here to celebrate and to grieve.”

“So this is it. Today is our last Daily Chapel in this glorious Benitez Chapel. So very sad. So very exciting.”

FOUR SENIORS STAND OUT AS PILLARS OF DAILY CHAPEL If you have attended an EHS Chapel service during these last four years, you surely spotted at least one of four stand-out, service-hearted seniors: Will Giesler, Marisol Hess, Ella Rothwell, and Colin Tobola, living the EHS Mission. Each has chosen involvement in Daily Chapel, the time for our community to gather in the spirit of reflection and connection, as a way to grow spiritually and to serve others. Though their journeys through the Religion Pillar have been varied, these four students have arrived "as a team," in the eyes of Dean of Religion The Reverend Art Callaham, in the same rewarding place, serving this year as acolytes, senior speakers, and worship leaders.

The impact that these four seniors leave upon their peers is ironically the very same thing that in each of their cases ignited the desire to pursue Chapel involvement: seeing an upperclassman delight in Chapel service. Colin’s interest was first sparked as a Family Chapel leader, which quickly evolved into his participation as an acolyte, whereas Marisol and Will first engaged in Chapel as members of the Altar Guild, and Ella began as a lector. Marisol credits the EHS Daily Chapel culture as helping her find “a spiritual home at EHS…the Chapel program keeps high schoolers in mind.” Because the EHS Daily Chapel congregation is mostly students, Marisol says she has been able to be involved in many diverse opportunities, including serving on The Reverend Tori Gilliland's Curate Committee alongside Will, which she otherwise might not have been able to do in a traditional church setting. Of his part in this experience, Will says, “Being on Reverend Gilliland’s Curate Committee surprised me because of how personal and formative the experience became. What began as providing sermon feedback turned into a close relationship built through weekly check-ins, shared conversations, and a welcoming place to be honest.” Marisol agrees, saying, “I really enjoyed the opportunity to work with Reverend Gilliland as a member of her Curate Committee, as she has been the most fantastic mentor to me, so being able to return the favor in this way was rewarding.”

Similarly, both Colin and Ella have been encouraged by Chapel participation to challenge themselves with new experiences. Ella notes that speaking in front of the congregation as a lector “has given me newfound confidence and sparked peer relationships that support my spiritual journey.” Colin was encouraged after beginning to serve as an acolyte: “Being an acolyte showed me the value of participation in Chapel, and how much you can get out of it if you lean in. Since then, my Chapel participation and involvement has only increased.”

This quartet of Seniors is particularly distinguished as all participated in our senior speakers program, which is a program that selects seniors by nomination to give homilies during Daily Chapel. Selected students exemplify the EHS Mission: to live a meaningful life in service to others. These homilies, written and delivered by seniors throughout the school year, are meant to inspire their peers and to answer the question: what does it mean to live a meaningful life in service to others? Will kicked off the series with the school year’s first senior speech, then Ella gave her homily notably at Freshman Retreat, and both Colin and Marisol gave their homilies later in the spring semester. All of them have felt challenged, rewarded, and renewed by the task.

The venue for Ella’s homily—All Saints’ Chapel at Camp Allen— which took place during Freshman Retreat was both special and a bit intimidating. Though the number of usual congregants was reduced by hundreds, Ella had spent her morning alongside Marisol, organizing and performing the service themselves, and she certainly felt pressure to give a resonant homily for our freshmen. She says, “The experience helped me do something I always wanted to but would otherwise never put myself out to do.

I faced my fears and gave a speech that many freshmen said they admired. That was a really special moment to me because I had become the person I once admired.” Colin feels challenged and triumphant: “Being a senior speaker was something I would never have volunteered for had The Rev. Gilliland not asked me, but it presented an opportunity to examine, grow and share my faith and passion for what we do in Chapel with my community.” For Marisol, her senior speech was a task which she felt was “the most thought-provoking and challenging thing I have faced as a leader in Chapel.”

Stand Out Seniors

These impressive, servant-hearted students have not tackled this service on their own; mentorship through the Religion Pillar has been foundational and propulsive for each of them. Learning how to embody each of their many roles: acolyte, lector, altar guild member, and worship leader takes guidance and reverence. To Ella, the mentorship of The Rev. Callaham and The Rev. Gilliland has taken the shape of “laughs, happiness, bravery, guidance, and lifelong advice I will take with me forever.” For Colin, their challenging him toward taking on new roles within the Chapel program has “given me opportunities to deepen my faith and connection to Chapel.” To Will, their mentorship is both impactful and foundational: “The chaplains provided steady support through both the highs and lows of high school. They helped me grow in my faith by encouraging reflection, listening without judgment, and offering perspective.” Marisol reflects on her close relationship with The Rev. Gilliland, saying, “Reverend Gilliland has been particularly helpful and influential in encouraging me to explore my discernment further. I think when I first got to know her, all I could see was the light of God shining through her, drawing me in.”

As these students see the love of service and spirituality shining through our chaplains, so do the chaplains see this same love shining through these four students. The Rev. Gilliland notes that Marisol “delights in Chapel” whilst Will “is both accountable and someone you can count on.” She describes Ella as “faithful… serving with intentionality” and notes that Colin is “steadfast, devoted to his tasks as an acolyte, no matter the flexibility that is

required.” The Rev. Callaham says about the group, “What strikes me is that all four have an intellectual curiosity about their faith that matches their willingness to serve. Whether in the classroom or the sacristy, they don’t just settle for simply doing things the right way; they strive to understand the why behind what we do.”

When asked about what makes EHS Daily Chapel special, Will, Marisol, Ella, and Colin all describe it as a meditative, communal retreat away from the commotion of balancing academic, social, athletic, and personal commitments. They not only express a personal benefit from the few minutes of contemplation, but they also all agree that much of the beauty of Chapel, maybe even especially from the vantage of acolytes, is watching their peers, teachers, and community members gathered in reverence, too.

It can be difficult to capture the impact of such a multivalent, dependable ritual as Daily Chapel, but from Marisol’s perspective, “The fantastic thing about EHS Chapel is that it holds a different meaning for everyone. For some students like me, it acts as an opportunity to physically serve. For others, maybe it is just a time to take a breath and reflect. The opportunity to make Chapel what you need aids the building of community two-fold. It does not make students feel forced to be there; rather, students genuinely enjoy Chapel— religious or not. It gives each of us a reason to feel proud of the community we belong to.”

EHS Auction & Gala

COMING FEBRUARY 2027 For 38 years, the Episcopal High School Auction has brought families together for an enchanted evening in support of our School’s operating budget. Since its founding in 1988, this cherished tradition has strengthened our community and contributed more than $30 million to the EHS annual budget— an extraordinary testament to the spirit and generosity of our families.

Looking ahead, the February 2027 Lone Star Knight will venture off campus to The Rustic on Post Oak for an evening filled with community, live music, Paddles Up, and a joyful celebration of Episcopal High School.

The Auction grew out of the beloved Canine Follies, with the shared goal of raising vital resources while creating an evening of connection, joy, and celebration. From the moment the doors first opened, Episcopal High School has benefitted enormously from the dedication of volunteers who rolled up their sleeves year after year, giving their time, creativity, and energy—not only to the Auction, but across campus in countless ways.

We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the many Auction chairs and volunteers whose tireless efforts over the years have helped ensure that every EHS student has had the opportunity to explore, grow, and succeed within the Four Pillars.

Their legacy is lasting and deeply felt.

We hope you will consider joining us for this special evening on Friday, February 19, 2027, as we honor our past and look ahead together with gratitude and excitement.

After thoughtful review by the Board of Trustees Advancement and Finance Committees, the School will begin holding the Auction every other year. THE RENEWAL BEGINS The Construction Committee is pleased to report that the revitalization of the Benitez Chapel is underway! This sacred space will serve as the spiritual heart of our campus for generations to come. We are grateful for the strong support of our community as construction begins in earnest. For now, our Daily Chapel is held in Alkek Gym. If you haven’t come by to see the daily miracle that is “Gym Chapel,” you are most cordially invited.

Before construction began, we carefully removed for restoration and reuse our sacred treasures—the existing stained-glass windows (including the Life of Christ, Evangelists, and Alpha and Omega windows), the main Altar, the Stations of the Cross, the Altar Cross, and other significant liturgical furnishings. Our new Chapel will include our restored materials and incorporate original stained-glass masterpieces as well as our recently gifted and refurbished world class organ.

The additional stained glass is being thoughtfully designed specifically for EHS. The Rev. Art Callaham, Dean of Religion, and The Rev. Tyler Montgomery, Associate Head of School for Academics and Student Life, are collaborating with the outstanding fifth generation artists at the Emil Frei & Associates Studio in St. Louis, Missouri. These new pieces will complement the existing glass designs, expand the visual aesthetic, and serve as an avenue for teaching. The south windows facing Bissonnet will include a rose window and lancet windows and depict the ascent of our prayers to God in symbol and color. This stunning artwork will become the reverent backdrop for our Daily Chapel for generations. In addition, Garmon Ashby, Performing Arts Department Chair, is passionately guiding us through the immense coordination required for the restoration of the Skinner Opus 819 (1930) organ (the “nave organ”) and companion chancel organ.

Over the past several months, significant pre-foundational steps have already been completed, and the campus looks quite different.

The existing Chapel and bell tower have been carefully dismantled to make way for the new structure. The Convent building is detached, and renovations are beginning for the timely delivery of the new Mental Health and Wellness wing with an anticipated open date of early 2027. We hope to take student support services to the next level by uniting the expertise of our chaplains, mental health counselors, and nurses in a single space. This holistic approach brings these three groups into close physical proximity and is designed to nurture student physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. It is our hope that these improvements will make it easier for students to access the support they need throughout the day.

As this exciting project progresses throughout the spring and summer, crews will be installing piers and grade beams in anticipation of pouring the structural slab. This solid foundation will hold our new Benitez Chapel, and we look forward to raising our collective voices and prayers in Gratitude to our loving God. Kindest Regards,

The Chapel’s design encourages congregation participation, and the acoustics are optimized for congregational singing as well as choral and organ music that is the foundation of the Episcopal/ Anglican tradition. The rear balcony and front chancel have space to accommodate a choir, instrumentalists, and the organ console, thereby allowing for musical leadership during Daily Chapel, State Chapels, and smaller, more intimate events. The nave and chancel organs, though separate instruments, will complement and provide contrast with each other and will be playable separately or together.

VIC KORMEIER:

ENDOWMENT PRESIDENT, SERVANT LEADER, AND FRIEND TO ALL Vic Kormeier has spent his life serving others—his church, the Diocese, our School, his family, and his many, many friends. Founder and Life Trustee Larry Neuhaus calls him “an all-star player on the Episcopal High School team.” At EHS Vic served as President of the Endowment Fund Board for 23 years, Executive Chair of the Board, Capital Campaign Chair, and Life Trustee. He did it all with wisdom, humility, and grace.

“The School spent the first 15 years of its existence in survival mode,” explained EHS trustee and founding President of the Endowment Board Victor A. Kormeier, Jr., affectionately known to all during his longtime tenure as Vic. “Raising funds to retire the debt on the land and buildings, [we put] endowment fundraising on the back burner” (Annual Report 2002-03).

The EHS Endowment Fund, he said several years later, “has risen from very humble beginnings” with the first two gifts of $100,000 each from Lee Jamail and Jack Trotter in 1984, borrowed by the School’s trustees to keep the doors open, “a hard decision in some very hard times” (Annual Report 2014-15). In

fact, Neuhaus often facetiously referred to the School’s debt for land and buildings as its negative endowment!

By 1996, however, with plans for the debt to be retired in two years, Vic and the other trustees began to look toward the future.

At the September 1996 Board of Trustees meeting, together they posed questions related to the initial endowment gifts.

Endowment “Vic is a man of great joy. He has been a voice of reason and quietly advised three headmasters and numerous boards. He is a friend to all.” – Larry Neuhaus, Life Trustee The trustees scheduled a two-day weekend meeting in early spring 1997 to plan direction, and later that year the Endowment Fund was created. The articles of incorporation were drafted by EHS trustee and longtime Fund Vice President Bill Caudill with the help of his firm Fulbright & Jaworski, the Fund’s mission being to secure the perpetuity of EHS. Vic Kormeier was tapped to be President. In the 2002-03 Annual Report, Vic was proud to report that “in the brief period from 1997-2003, the Endowment received $7.58 million from generous individuals and foundations.” The first distribution to the School was in 2002-03 for $178,000.

Through it all, from 1997 to his retirement in 2020, Vic Kormeier meticulously, tenaciously, and indefatigably oversaw the management and growth of the EHS Endowment Fund. Former Director of Advancement Sukey Fenoglio calls him a faithful servant to the School. Says EHS Associate Head for Finance and Operations Evelyn Cambria, “He watched that Fund like a hawk.” She recalls the quarterly meetings beginning in 2008 when she was hired: “He took the advisors of our investment firm to task at each meeting, making sure we were getting the best results.” Cambria says she learned from Vic about respectfully holding the advisors accountable. “He wanted them to do their homework,” she remembers, “with their advice based on evidence and experience.” As both a CPA and an attorney, Vic made sure that the School was invested properly.

“The devil is in the detail,” he often admonished.

In the Fund's early years, whenever the School closed out the year with a surplus in the operating budget, Vic’s was always the voice arguing that the funds go into the Endowment—and they usually did. In the teens, when the School opened a PPRRSM Fund (Provision for Plant Replacement, Renewal, and Special Maintenance) to use for long-term capital projects like roof replacement and HVAC improvements, Vic agreed that the excess be split between Endowment and PPRRSM, both Funds in support of the long-term financial health of the School. He also worked hard to keep the Endowment Fund separate and independent from any of the School’s other Funds.

Regarding distributions to the School, he was close-fisted, insisting that what was most important was the growth of the Fund. For many years, the Endowment distributions were well below common practices in order to encourage growth. When the Fund received a large gift in 2016, he was instrumental in drafting a request for proposal to secure new investment advisors, and he led the effort to hire Ellwood and Associates, which became CapTrust, the firm we use today. That gift, and the strategy devised by the CapTrust advisors, Vic, and the Endowment Board,

propelled the growth of the Endowment to its value of $69 million as of December 31, 2025. Since the first distribution in 2002-03, more than $18 million has been distributed to the School.

Current Fund President Randa Duncan Williams recalls that when she joined the Endowment Board, “Vic was in the process of updating the bylaws and moving to a consultant-based model.

Vic’s counsel, foresight, and financial acumen created a structure where the endowment grew to its current level. The members of the Endowment Board and the broader EHS community are enormously grateful for his leadership.”

A longtime parishioner at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, Vic joined the EHS community when his son Gus ’92 (champion pole vaulter whose classmates traveled all over Texas to watch him vault!) was a sophomore. Vic’s wife Dr. Lucy Kormeier remembers the family’s gratitude after an early call from math teacher Nguyet Pham reporting that Gus had earned a 100 on a test. The EHS connection continued with Vic a Vietnam vet and Nguyet’s father one of Lucy’s patients. Lucy also remembers the many years when Vic was chair of the finance committee for the Diocese, senior warden of the vestry as well as treasurer at St. John the Divine, and President of the EHS Endowment Board, not to mention EHS Executive Chair of the Board from 1998-2000. He had so many meetings, she remembers, that she wondered when he actually had time for his practice as an estate attorney!

“I had the honor of working with Vic on the Endowment Board, and I was always impressed with how much he loved both the Endowment and, more importantly, Episcopal High School. We were very blessed to have him.” – Craig Childers, Life Trustee Vic was beyond thrilled when his granddaughter Lucy Howley joined the EHS Class of ’21 as a freshman. He loved nothing more than sitting in the bleachers on a sunny afternoon with wife Lucy and daughter and former EHS trustee Elizabeth Howley, watching her play field hockey and lacrosse.

Says Cambria, “Vic is a gentleman with a heart for EHS. This institution was built on the shoulders of Vic Kormeier and the other founding Endowment Fund Board members, Bill Caudill and Larry Neuhaus,” who understood that the long-term success of independent schools is dependent on their strong endowment funds. With the foundation they built under Vic’s leadership, the future of EHS continues to be bright.

POPZ I BOB MATTHEWS U Q English Instructor, Summer School Director, Website Content Developer Of the five children in his family, Bob is the only one who did not attend Episcopal High School. His siblings Victoria ’94, Mary ’97, Elizabeth ’05, and Quibs ’07 are all proud alums! But arriving in 2004 to teach English and work in the library, Bob got here as quickly as possible. And with the James D. Matthews Concession Stand named in honor of his father, longtime volunteer and twice Dads Club president, for the Matthews clan, EHS is a family affair.

Born and raised in Houston, Bob earned his B.A. in English from the University of Texas at Austin and his Master’s of Liberal Studies at Rice University. His mother was a preschool teacher whom Bob credits, along with many loving childhood teachers, for his choice of teaching. At present he teaches English 2 Honors and English 4 AP and serves as Summer School Director and Website Content Developer. In his leisure time, he enjoys board games with his family—wife Ashley and nine-year-old daughter Elizabeth—gardening, and travel, especially to the American West and the UK. In London last summer, Elizabeth and Aunt Victoria competed for whose name appeared most often on London signage!

Kate Lambert, who still teaches at Kinkaid, was my 9th/10th grade English teacher and advisor for all four years of high school.

I leaned on her when I first decided to teach high school English, and we still get together these days to talk shop.

If you were not a teacher, what would you choose for a profession?

For a long time, the answer was a residential architect, but now I’d love to be a gardener or run a pond business.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

Although I can’t claim much of the credit, every time an alum who is doing great things in the world reaches out to say thanks, it certainly makes me feel accomplished (ok—it makes me downright glow!).

What do you most respect about your students?

The other day I supervised some students working on an ETV project on campus until almost nine. One of them had just come from running six miles at track practice, and the other three had just spent several hours at rehearsal for the musical. Their stomachs were grumbling because they’d delayed dinner so they could chase their passions. Our students work so hard and do it with smiles on their faces.

In your time at EHS, what is a favorite moment?

Since I’ve already mentioned the students, I’ll focus on the teachers. Researchers increasingly bang the drum for the benefits of (and needs for) social stimulation (and putting down our phones), and the conversations I get to have every day with brilliant and hilarious faculty members are a real highlight of every day.

What do you hope your students take from you as a teacher?

Of course, I hope they learn to express themselves clearly, but more than that, I hope they develop a love of learning and exploration.

POPZ QUI SOLE TORIELLO

Spanish Teacher (1, 2H, AP Language & Culture) Spanish National Honor Society Advisor, SOS Advisor, Tech Mentor Sole Toriello was born in Santiago, Chile—five minutes after the birth of her twin sister—and attended Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, majoring in Education. She says that she did not choose teaching; rather teaching chose her. As a child, she loved playing school but for years dreamed of becoming a pediatrician. That changed during her senior year of high school when she took a course on educational methodologies and spent a semester visiting a school and monitoring the academic and social progress of a group of students. It was there, standing in a classroom, that she realized how happy she was in that environment. From that moment on, she says, she knew she had found her calling.

Sole joined the EHS faculty in 2019 and teaches Spanish 1, Spanish 2 Honors, and Spanish Language and Culture AP. In addition, she serves as Spanish National Honor Society advisor, SOS advisor, National Spanish Exam coordinator, tech mentor, new faculty mentor, and Bridge for Hope sponsor. In her spare time, she walks the trails in her neighborhood and explores Houston, including museums, theaters, sports stadiums, and the rodeo. She says that she loves to travel, visiting family in Chile and her daughters in the Northeast, as well as exploring new cultures and foods.

Sole and her husband enjoy gathering with friends, but above all, family comes first. With four children between the ages of 18 and 28, they will gladly cancel any plans if it means that the six of them can be together.

Romantic ballads, Latin pop, pop rock, and country music.

If you could eat only one meal this week, what would it be?

A Chilean empanada de pino—a traditional beef empanada that is quite different from the ones we usually find here!

What is your favorite family tradition?

Our New Year’s celebration is a tradition that truly defines us. In Chile, New Year’s falls in the summer and marks not only the end of the calendar year but also the end of the academic year and the beginning of summer vacation. We dress up, decorate the house, and usually cook ham or turkey.

We always put money inside our shoes for prosperity in the new year. Because there is a three-hour time difference with Chile, we first celebrate Chilean midnight by watching the fireworks on TV, eating lentils and grapes. Then we dance or sing karaoke.

When midnight arrives here, we stand on chairs or sofas, holding suitcases filled with items that represent places we hope to visit in the coming year. It is joyful, symbolic, and very us.

Did you have a mentor growing up who inspired you?

Yes—Paul Siegel, my university professor of Theory of Knowledge. He emphasized the apostolate of being—of being credible witnesses first in our own families, and then in our professional, social, and faith communities. I am deeply grateful to him because, even before I graduated, he invited me to help create a new school focused on pedagogical innovation. At 22 years old, I had the freedom to begin shaping my own teaching style as part of a hardworking and creative team.

If you were not a teacher, what would you choose for a profession?

I would likely be a community project coordinator. As a university student in Chile, I participated in community service projects as a volunteer, and later I accompanied my husband in various experiences related to urban planning and design. Building community has always been close to my heart.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

My family. Despite moving between countries and cities, we have made our house a true home and built a family identity that is uniquely ours. We call ourselves the “ETs”—after our last names, Echeverría-Toriello!

What do you most respect about your students?

I deeply respect their willingness to challenge themselves to grow within the Four Pillars of our School, especially in their sense of community and solidarity.

In your time at EHS, what is a favorite moment?

Chapel, because it is the driving force of the day that brings us together as one large community to reflect and pray. I would also add Culture Fest—a celebration where we share and learn about the rich and diverse identities that make us unique at EHS. It is a beautiful reminder that our differences are gifts and that community grows stronger when we truly see and celebrate one another.

What do you hope your students take from you as a teacher?

That every moment is a gift when we live intentionally and act with love. There is no such thing as a completely bad day—there is always something to be grateful for.

I also hope their desire to learn and their curiosity never fade but instead grow stronger with the years. And I want them to know that each and every one of them— students and alumni—has shaped who I am as a teacher and as a person.

Academic Wins

EHS ACADEMIC TEAM RACKS UP THE POINTS In the teenage world, Friday afternoons are often reserved for friends, relaxing, and breaks from homework. But if you pass by EHS’s Innovation Space #1 in the Underwood Student Center around this time, you will most likely hear the ringing of buzzers, groans, and cheers. This is the sound of the EHS Quiz Bowl Team, led by Head Coach Scotty Johnson, preparing for future competitions. The Quiz Bowl team is one of the three major components of our EHS Academic Team now in its fifth year, which competes in Quiz Bowl, computer science, and traditional academic tournaments.

Quiz Bowl can best be described as "Team Jeopardy" and is modeled after the old G.E. College Bowl and the Texaco Star Academic Challenge. Since its inception in 2021, EHS has won about 200 matches and three tournament championships with questions coming from areas of mathematics, science, literature, and the arts.

The EHS CompSci Team is consistently ranked among the top five public and private 4A-sized schools in Texas. Students take individual tests and work as teams on programs in on-site and virtual contests. The widest-ranging aspect of the team involves

academic tournaments patterned after the highly regarded UIL program for public schools. Students compete in 16 events from Current Events to Accounting, Headline Writing to Science. Our Knights have spent many hours preparing for these competitions, and their hard work is paying off. Coach Johnson reports that the team has done particularly well in Number Sense, Calculator, Spelling, and CompSci. Coach Johnson has participated in UIL Academics for more than 50 years as a contestant, coach, and official. In bringing this level of competition to EHS, he says, "We want to give our kids the opportunity to learn, work as a team, be successful, and have fun." Unlike UIL and TAPPS, SPC has no competitive academic component, but EHS wants to change that. This year, we will host an SPC Invitational Meet with the hope of establishing an SPC Academic Championship Tournament going forward.

Academic Success

BONHOEFFER SCHOLAR JOINS EHS Dr. Corey Tuttle, who joined the EHS Department of Religion last fall, has spent the past ten years studying German pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945), an anti-Nazi dissident who was put to death in Flossenburg concentration camp two weeks before the end of World War II and whose writings on Christianity’s role in the secular world have become widely influential. Inspired by Bonhoeffer’s life and courage, Corey has developed a passion for connecting Christian theology to everyday life and was recently involved in two book projects regarding the theologian.

In January 2024, Corey presented a paper at the International Bonhoeffer Congress in Sydney, Australia on the application of Bonhoeffer’s thinking to the contemporary issue of decreased attention spans linked to social media use. Corey’s paper was selected to be included in a volume entitled Bonhoeffer and Contemporary Challenges: Crisis and Hope, released in February 2026.

Corey also worked as the editor for a collected volume of essays written by his doctoral supervisor, Professor Phil Ziegler, which provides new insights into Bonhoeffer’s biography and theology, released in April 2026.

“It’s what I’ve always done,” she says, to the delight of EHS faculty, staff, and students. Her responsibility, in addition to breakfast, is main courses and soups, and some of the recipes are her own. “The gumbo is mine,” she boasts, proud of her Louisiana heritage, “as are the red beans and rice, fried fish, and French toast.” And Gvahn’s Meatloaf is legendary, enjoyed

Retiring after 31 years of arriving before dawn and cooking breakfast and lunch each day, Gvahn will miss the cooking and the people. “I’ve really enjoyed coming to work every day and getting to know the students.

Although I’m mostly in the kitchen now, when we were smaller, I knew each student and what they liked to eat.”

Director of Food Services Susana Borges-Pasini recognizes how Gvahn’s willingness to learn and adapt has strengthened daily operations. “For 31 years, Gvahn has been a steady and dependable presence on this team, and I am proud to have worked with her and learned from her for 12 of those years. As a highly knowledgeable lead cook, she honed her craft to perfection, becoming the backbone of our kitchen. It will be a hard task to replace her; Gvahn Nelson cannot be replicated!”

In retirement, she plans to rest. “It’s time,” Gvahn says.

Gvahn Nelson will be missed by a grateful community whom she has nourished for three decades. We wish her rest, serenity, and happy eating.

Heartfelt Goodbyes

KAREN FOSTER: WELL DONE, GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT! For forty years, Karen Foster has been a pillar of the EHS faculty–teaching, coaching, advising, mentoring, knowing and loving our EHS students. The backbone of the freshman biology team for decades, Karen provided her students not only the foundations of the life sciences but also instruction in study skills and in navigating one’s way through the new environment of high school. A safe and affirming space, her classroom was the place scores of freshmen gathered during daily tutorials and after school for years. The magic was that she “got” her students, she enjoyed spending her days with them, she found them funny and endearing, she didn’t take personally their immaturities and foibles; rather, she both held them accountable and patiently nurtured them.

Karen remembers the fall of 2005 when four girls, displaced from Hurricane Katrina, joined her Anatomy and Physiology class and the kindness and compassion of her EHS students. “I felt such a sense of pride,” she recalls “as I watched our students give the NOLA students and teachers a place to belong. I hope we helped those girls in some small way get through a challenging time.”

continues: “She was called upon to do these important jobs because she has always been trusted and beyond reproach. And on a personal note, I could not have selected a better mentor. I was blessed to have her advising me and am proud to call her my friend.”

Karen says above all she will miss her students—their thank yous when they leave class or turn in a paper or a difficult exam.

She will miss her colleagues in the science department “who challenged me to put forth my best self each day.” And she will miss lunch—approximately 6,400 delicious meals!

For Karen, EHS is her second home. “My life has happened here.

I got married, my children grew up attending athletic contests and dance concerts. This community shared the joy in the births of my children, my daughter’s wedding, the birth of my granddaughter and provided compassion and support with the loss of my parents. This family has cared for me and uplifted me for four decades. What a gift to have had a career that has given me a second home. I am taking away a lifetime of memories. For that I am grateful.”

It is with our profound gratitude as well that we celebrate her forty years at EHS.

She also remembers the SPC South Zone tournament on campus one spring when she brought her freshman biology class out to support the two varsity girls in her class and watch a few minutes of the game. When a mother from another school approached her, Karen expected to be chastised and was surprised when the mother said, “My daughter’s school would never allow this. I guess EHS really has the sense of community I hear about.” A few years later, her family joined EHS. As longtime Dean of Students and Principal Kim Randolph explains, “A measure of the value of a teacher in an independent school is not only skill in the classroom but also the willingness to provide support and leadership outside of the classroom.” In addition to teaching, Karen has served EHS in coaching, faculty mentoring, Honor Council, Safeguarding God’s Children, student awards, and Alumni support among other endeavors. STARS AT KNIGHT ALUMNI RECEPTION EHS welcomed Alumni back to campus for a memorable Alumni Weekend celebrating class years ending in 1s and 6s. The weekend began with a Chapel service, where students and Alumni heard from Richard A. Howell ’01, recipient of the Bishops’ Alumni Award. Selected by fellow Alumni, the award honors a graduate who exemplifies a life of service and continues to reflect the School’s Mission in meaningful ways.

On Friday evening, Alumni from across the decades gathered on campus for the Stars at Knight Alumni Reception. The celebration honored Richard A. Howell ’01 and “Ms. Sheila” Kelly, recipient of the Hexagon Distinguished Faculty and Staff Achievement Award, which recognizes a faculty or staff member whose lasting impact reflects EHS’s deepest ideals and advances the development of students’ minds, faith, and spirit in alignment with the School’s Mission.

SHEILA KELLY Next year a drive or walk across campus will look different without a wave or smile from our beloved “Ms. Sheila.” EHS families have felt the warmth she brings to campus for 24 years, but now it’s time for her to rest. She’ll retire after the ’25-’26 school year, and what a lasting impact she leaves behind!

Colleagues frequently describe Ms. Sheila as direct, knowledgeable, and steady—qualities that earn the trust and respect of both students and families. Parents often refer to Sheila as a second mother to their children—someone who truly knows students, is attentive to their lives, and helps guide them through challenges before small concerns grow into larger ones. Her care does not end at graduation; Sheila remains a trusted advisor well beyond EHS, visiting former Knights at their colleges and continuing to cheer them on as they grow into adulthood.

Says Sheila, “Since my first day in 2002, this hasn’t just been a job—it’s been my life. It’s where friendships turned lifelong and ordinary days became cherished memories. I’ll deeply miss the kids, the energy of sports, and especially the magic of Friday “Knights.” Those moments will stay with me forever. Thank you, Mr. Ned Smith, for allowing me to grow, to serve, and to be part of a community that became my second home.”

As she prepares to retire, Sheila Kelly leaves behind a legacy defined by compassion, integrity, service, and an unwavering commitment to students and families—embodying the Mission of Episcopal High School and the very ideals the Hexagon Distinguished Faculty and Staff Award was created to honor.

RICHARD A. HOWELL ’01 A member of the Class of 2001, Richard is a litigation partner at Jackson Walker LLP, focusing on energy and commercial disputes, and currently serves as Executive Chair of the EHS Board of Trustees, continuing his deep commitment to the School.

After graduating from EHS, he earned a B.A. with Honors in Government from The University of Texas at Austin, followed by a J.D. with Honors from Baylor University School of Law, where he served on Law Review.

With years of dedicated service and leadership—including serving on the Board of Trustees from July 2020 to June 2024 and becoming the first Alumnus to serve as Executive Chair in July 2023—Richard has played a vital role in advancing the School’s Mission. Former Executive Chair of the Board of Trustees Haag Sherman affirms, “Richard is a true gentleman whose leadership and service have meaningfully strengthened Episcopal High School. I can think of no one more deserving of the Bishops’ Alumni Award.”

CONNELLY MCGREEVY ’89 LIVING THE MISSION— AS A STUDENT, PARENT, AND VOLUNTEER

Some Alumni stay connected to Episcopal High School from nostalgia.

Others return from gratitude. Connelly McGreevy ’89 came back—and stayed—because EHS’s Mission continues to shape how he lives, leads, and gives back. Connelly is one of the many members of the EHS community who has experienced the School fully: first as a student, later as a parent, and then as a volunteer leader. Across each chapter, his connection to EHS has remained grounded in the same values— participation, service, community, and a deep respect for the Four Pillars.

“I really try to live my life according to that Mission,” Connelly says. “I grew up with those expectations, so EHS was a natural extension.”

A FOUR-PILLAR STUDENT While the Four Pillars—Academics, Arts, Athletics, and Religion—have always been part of the Episcopal High School experience, Connelly notes that during his time as a student, they simply were—not something that needed to be named or emphasized. “It’s funny,” Connelly reflects. “We had the Four Pillars, but they weren’t celebrated the way they are today.”

Looking back, however, the balance is unmistakable. “I really was a Four-Pillar kid,” he says. “Not because you had to be, but because I really participated.”

In addition to his academic courseload, Connelly played sports year-round—football, basketball, golf, and cross country—while also singing in Choir, performing for Advent Chapel, serving as an acolyte, and stepping outside his comfort zone into the arts. The culture encouraged full participation rather than specialization; students explored, tried new things, and grew without labels or pressure. “It wasn’t something you thought about,” he adds. “You just did things.”

That quiet, holistic approach—woven naturally into daily life at EHS—helped shape Connelly’s confidence and sense of purpose.

One of the most formative experiences, he recalls, came from an unexpected place—drama class. “At the time, I probably didn’t even like it because it was so uncomfortable,” Connelly says. “But looking back 20 years later, it was incredibly impactful. It taught me how to stand up in front of people and not be fearful.”

Academically, Connelly describes himself as a hard worker rather than a natural. Subjects like science, history, government, and English came more easily, while math required persistence. What EHS gave him, he says, was not just knowledge—but confidence, discipline, and the ability to push through challenges. “I was really blessed by my time at EHS,” he reflects. “It shaped who I am.”

EPISCOPAL AS A PARENT— AND GIVING BACK Years later, Connelly returned to Episcopal High School with his own children—and found that the Mission he had experienced as a student was alive and well. “All three of my kids who graduated from EHS went to UT,” he says. “Every one of them said they were incredibly prepared—writing, time management, study skills. That foundation really showed in college.” But it wasn’t just academic preparation that stood out. The School’s commitment to developing character and honoring individual talents resonated deeply with Connelly and his family.

That same philosophy was noticed by longtime former colleague and fellow EHS parent Karey Dye, who worked alongside Connelly at Goldman Sachs. Dye noted that the values she and Connelly both prized shaped not only their professional relationship, but also their shared commitment to EHS. “I think Connelly and I enjoyed working together because the Goldman Sachs culture prioritizes hard work, critical thinking, collaboration, integrity, and service,” Dye says. “Those are values we both believe in deeply, so it’s no surprise we wanted our children to benefit from an Episcopal High School education—one that develops strong character, a moral compass, and individual talents. That combination, alongside deep goodness and an inclusive spirit, is the foundation of a purposeful life.”

LEADING WITH BALANCE AS DADS CLUB PRESIDENT Connelly’s most visible service to EHS came through four years of volunteer leadership with Dads Club, including a term as president during a pivotal period for the club. “You only have so many hours in a day,” Connelly explains. “So you have to choose carefully. Dads Club was a great way to be involved and give back.”

As president, he was intentional about ensuring that all Four Pillars had a voice. Connelly noted that the Dads Club had long maintained a strong track record of supporting funding priorities

“He immediately commanded the room and had a deep understanding of the Dads Club mission—especially its commitment to supporting all Four Pillars. He made my first year an exceptionally smooth transition,” Leisz adds. “His leadership, clarity, and partnership were invaluable. I will always be grateful for his support.”

That commitment to service extends well beyond campus. Guided by a faith that remains central to his life, Connelly also serves on the board of the University of St. Thomas. He and his wife Jackie have been deeply involved in their children’s education, raising four children—three of whom are EHS graduates—Molly ’19, Jack ’21, and Matthew ’24. Connelly’s professional journey reflects the same steady dedication. After attending Boston College, he began his career at Andersen Consulting, earned his MBA from Rice University, and joined Goldman Sachs in 1999. Over the past 26 years, he has helped grow the firm’s Houston office, building lasting relationships grounded in integrity, collaboration, and service. brought forward by Athletics and Academics. “I wanted Arts and Religion to come forward, too,” he said. Under his leadership, Dads Club supported Choir and Chapel needs for the Religion Pillar, invested in photography equipment for the Arts Pillar, and strengthened the community through simple but meaningful acts—feeding cast and crew during productions, grilling at games, and creating spaces for parents to connect.

Steve Leisz, Director of Parent Programs, vividly recalls Connelly’s impact. “As I transitioned into my new role and began working with Dads Club, I was incredibly fortunate that Connelly McGreevy was stepping in as president,” Leisz says.

STILL LIVING THE MISSION Today, Connelly’s connection to Episcopal High School is less about titles and more about legacy—about living the values he learned as a teenager and passing them forward. “When I look at my kids as young adults,” he says, “I hope they carry those same expectations with them.”

Across every role—student, parent, volunteer, and professional— Connelly McGreevy continues to live out the values EHS instilled early on, grounding his life in faith, service, and a deep commitment to community.

SPOTLIGHT ON GIVING: ANDREW HAWTHORN ’91 —

A LIFELONG COMMITMENT TO EPISCOPAL HIGH SCHOOL When Andrew Hawthorn says he graduated in 1991 but “never really left,” he means it.

For Andrew, Episcopal High School has never been simply a place he once attended. It is the community that shaped him, challenged him, and ultimately inspired a lifelong commitment of time, talent, and treasure.

Now serving his second term on the Board of Trustees, Andrew has dedicated years of leadership to the School, including service on the Advancement, Governance, and Construction Committees. He previously chaired the Community Life Committee and was a founding member of the Alumni Directors Council. In 2016, Andrew was honored with the Bishops’ Alumni Award, recognizing Alumni who exemplify the Bishops’ ideals of leadership, integrity, respect, and a life of service to others. Yet for him, involvement has never been about titles or awards.

“Staying involved has been about remaining connected to a place that had such a meaningful impact on my life,” Andrew shares.

“The EHS faculty and staff are what I’ve always called the School’s ‘secret sauce.’ They help students discover who they are and what they’re capable of becoming.”

DISCOVERING THE UNEXPECTED

As a student, Andrew found his place in the Arts—especially in technical theater. He spent countless hours backstage and in the tech booth, taking Stagecraft and immersing himself in production work. He preferred being behind the scenes, helping bring performances to life from the booth above the stage.

That early love of technical theater has now come full circle.

Through his support of the Stand for EHS capital campaign, Andrew’s name appears on the donor plaque of the Sarofim Hall Light Booth inside the newly opened Crain-Galloway Center for the Arts.

encouraged to stretch beyond their comfort zones, knowing they were supported along the way.

“That’s something I tell students all the time,” he says. “You’re in a safe place where you can explore, take risks, and try things without worrying too much about the outcome. Sometimes you discover something you never expected.”

AN IMPACTFUL PATH

After EHS, Andrew attended Emory University and earned a degree in psychology. Though he initially pursued advertising, the rapid rise of technology in the late 1990’s shifted his trajectory.

He moved into enterprise technology roles before earning his MBA from Rice University.

Today, he serves as a product lead at HP Inc., working at the intersection of business and innovation. He leads the development of AI-powered workstations designed to help organizations harness data, accelerate research, and unlock insight.

For Andrew, meaningful work is about impact.

Of course, his time at EHS wasn’t entirely behind the curtain.

In his senior year, theatre teachers Joseph Harper and Clinton Carbon encouraged him to audition for the spring musical. He relented—and found himself on stage in Godspell, singing a solo.

Earlier in his career, while serving as Director of Product Management at ESO, a software company that supports EMS agencies and hospitals, he helped guide rapid technology adoption during COVID-19. He also contributed to medical research, using de-identified patient data and co-authoring two published research papers on COVID-19 patients.

Those experiences, along with the encouragement of faculty who helped him persevere through rigorous coursework, reinforced a powerful lesson: EHS was a place where students were

save lives—that’s the pinnacle,” he says. “That’s what makes the work meaningful.”

The thread of service runs throughout his life. As a licensed paramedic in both Texas and Georgia, Andrew served as a volunteer for over 20 years and has consistently sought opportunities to serve others, whether through professional innovation, emergency response, or volunteer relief efforts.

“I try to live in service to others,” he reflects. “I really believe God put me on this planet to help take care of other people.”

GIVING BACK IN EVERY WAY

That philosophy naturally extends to his philanthropy.

Since graduation, Andrew has supported Episcopal High School faithfully through the EHS Fund, the Auction, and Capital giving.

Most recently, he documented a legacy gift to ensure that his support continues well into the future.

“My giving philosophy is that I like to give back to the places that made a meaningful impact on my life so they can continue making meaningful impacts on society,” he explains.

For Andrew, annual giving reflects gratitude. Auction support strengthens community. Capital gifts invest in the student experience. And planned giving ensures that commitment endures long after his lifetime.

“When I was planning my estate, I felt strongly that EHS needed to be included,” he says. “Leaving a legacy gift was my way of saying that EHS mattered to me—and it will continue to matter to me, even long after I’m gone.”

His service on the Construction Committee during significant campus improvements deepened his appreciation for investing in facilities that support excellence. But bricks and mortar, he notes, are only part of the story.

“What I don’t ever want to see Episcopal High School lose is that ‘secret sauce’—the faculty and staff who care deeply about students and help them become the best versions of themselves.”

LOOKING AHEAD

As his 35th reunion approaches, Andrew looks forward to reconnecting with classmates and reflecting on how far they’ve all come. But his relationship with Episcopal High School is not rooted in nostalgia; it is grounded in purpose.

Through leadership, philanthropy, and legacy planning, he is helping to ensure that future generations of students will experience the same encouragement, challenge, and care that shaped his life.

It is fitting that his name now appears on the Sarofim Hall Light Booth. As a student, he worked quietly behind the scenes so others could take the stage. Today, through his generosity, he continues to illuminate opportunities for students, many of whom he may never meet, to discover their talents, find their confidence, and step into their own spotlight.

He graduated in 1991—but he never really left.

And because of that, Episcopal High School continues to shine.
