Episcopal High School was founded in 1983 as a four‑year coeducational day school within the Episcopal Diocese of Texas.

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL “Applications for enrollment are up,” founding trustees Larry Neuhaus and Rick McCord reported to the board in March of 1992. “This is an incredible story to tell.”

Larry and the late Rick, both of whom have grandchildren at Episcopal High School today, were thrilled to report that the School had a pathway forward through the thick forest of debt, down a winding pathway of negotiations and renegotiations and endless fundraising, pleas to forgive interest and restructure payment on the loan that had allowed EHS to open. They were not out of the woods yet, but they knew they were going to get there. And in 1998, some fifteen years after the School was conceived, the debt was retired and the mortgage gleefully burned.

What an incredible story indeed! Today in 2025, the School continues to progress, building on the vision, the tenacity, and the successes of our Founders as chronicled within. We open the new school year with 848 students, including 242 freshmen, five new sophomores, and one new junior.

We saw applications from 94 middle schools and 31 different high schools.

We enrolled students from 48 middle schools and five different high schools, and our new students live in 44 different zip codes.

These students are taught by a wonderfully talented faculty of 109 strong. The average class size across the School is under 15 students, as our 146 courses are taught in 474 sections in a seven-period day. The teachers, like the students, live the Four Pillars with 48% formally involved outside of the classroom in the Religion Pillar, 38% outside of the classroom in the Academic Pillar, 34% in the Athletics Pillar, and ten percent in the Arts Pillar. It is no wonder that our recent graduates in the Class of 2025 received $23 million in scholarships.

None of this would be possible without the extraordinary support that each of you offers, enumerated within this year’s Report on Philanthropy. Whether you give of your time, your talent, or your treasure, thank you for making our work together possible.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE CHAIR Our founding bishop – the Rt. Rev. Maurice M. Benitez – once said that the goal of Episcopal High School was to build a joyful, faithful, Christian high school where students can fulfill their God-given potential to develop their intellect, to develop skills in all academic disciplines, to appreciate and participate in a strong fine arts program, to participate in a strong athletic program, and in all of this, to gather a storehouse of knowledge, enabling each to live the fullest kind of life.

This vision is a reality for our students! As Episcopal High School kicks off its second forty years, the Board of Trustees remains committed to the founding goal and its core functions of (1) setting the Mission and strategic direction for the School, (2) hiring and overseeing the Head of School, (3) protecting the financial well-being of EHS, and (4) providing independent governance to ensure the long-term success of our unique Mission.

This year has been remarkable. I want to highlight key Board and School actions: • RECORD NUMBER OF APPLICANTS. More eighth graders than ever before applied to be Knights! We do not intend to expand the target enrollment of our School, but we are thrilled that EHS is the #1 choice for so many students and provides a welcoming community that many want to join.

• ACADEMIC SUCCESS. EHS was recognized by the College Board as a repeat winner of the AP Platinum award, which recognizes the schools with the broadest participation in AP exams and the highest percentage of students scoring a passing score on five or more tests. In conversations with teachers this spring, I heard many stories of student success, whether it involved the brilliance of our National Merit Finalists or the dedication of students who challenged themselves in our rigorous classes. Most importantly, our seniors were admitted to excellent colleges across Texas and the nation and will leave EHS well prepared to succeed.

• STRATEGIC PLAN IMPLEMENTATION. The Board continues to implement the 2023 Strategic Plan. o Parent Communication. Parent involvement and communication are great strengths of EHS. As part of our strategic plan, the School launched its first all-parent survey last fall; surveys will continue on a routine basis. The Board and School leaders are implementing changes based on what we learned. Head of School Ned Smith led many parent coffee chats that provided a forum for discussing schedule changes, religion curriculum, and other topics. o Network and Physical Security. Following the development of the strategic plan, EHS conducted a series of audits of its network, software, and campus security, and those recommendations were implemented in the 2024-25 school year. o Fiscal Discipline. Our Board, working with Associate Head of School for Finance and Operations Evelyn Cambria, developed a ten-year financial plan. We are focused on good stewardship of resources and discipline over expenditures. This effort includes maintaining affordability, spending prudently on faculty and student programs, ensuring a robust financial aid program, and limiting growth in administration.

o Technology Use. Next year, the Board and School leadership will address the use of technology. This will include efforts to: (1) promote academic excellence and use appropriate technologies to tailor and personalize education, (2) consider limits on personal devices during school hours because of their tendency to distract and hinder learning and interpersonal communication, and (3) develop a comprehensive approach to artificial intelligence that considers when large language models cross the line from helpful tools to impairing students’ engagement and cognitive development. Why do this? The Board is committed to deepening the educational experience of all students. Even as technologies change, fluency and mastery of content – “storehouses of knowledge” as Bishop Benitez said – remain the foundation for higher-order thinking and understanding, questioning, and living wisely. Students’ discovery and development of their academic potential involves stretching their minds and building on knowledge. We aim to find the best path forward for the EHS community after dialogue with teachers and families. o Faith Formation. The Strategic Plan calls the School to “promote faith formation for those who are interested.”

Happily, a dozen members of the EHS community were baptized or confirmed in our Chapel during the past school year.

• CONTINUITY OF LEADERSHIP. Head of School Ned Smith is among the longest serving and most respected school leaders in Texas. Mr. Smith has successfully led EHS for nearly a generation, and he demonstrates wisdom, civility, and thoughtfulness in his approach. I am happy to share that the Board extended his term through the 2028-29 school year.

• ATHLETICS TITLE. The Knights finished as back-to-back winners of the Southwest Preparatory Conference Directors’ Cup for the top co-ed athletics program! Congratulations to Athletic Director Jason Grove and all coaches and athletes for building such a program that can compete in any sport, any year.

• CONSTRUCTION. o Arts Center. The Crain-Galloway Center for the Arts will add more than 20,000 square feet to our Arts Pillar programs and includes a new performance venue, classrooms, ETV, digital, visual, and music areas. Construction is on time and on budget. We look forward to the opening of this wonderful space in January 2026. o Benitez Chapel. We are continuing preparations and fundraising related to a reconstructed Benitez Chapel that will fit our full student body, faculty, staff, and guests. I encourage everyone to see the plans and support this effort!

• ALUMNI COUNCIL. Last spring, we reached out to alumni from the 1980’s to 2020’s to launch a renewed Alumni Council.

These alums will serve as ambassadors and volunteers for events, reunions, networking, alumni-focused communication, and other engagement efforts. We deeply appreciate alumni and past parents’ enthusiasm and commitment to our community! If you have not attended an alumni event recently, please come see EHS soon.

I want to share gratitude for the work of three trustees.

• Duncan Underwood has served four terms on the Board, spanning the past two decades, and was elected as a Life Trustee.

We look forward to Duncan’s continued service in this new role.

• Joel Moore chaired our Finance Committee during a particularly complex period; Joel is a humble leader who led efforts to improve the financial strength of the School.

• Shelley Barineau has served as Construction Committee Chair for the past decade and spent countless hours working to make EHS the best high school – and campus – in the city.

Finally, I want to thank our parent volunteers for all of their time!

I am especially thankful to PA President Bonny Edwards, Dads Club President Brian Sauer, EHS Fund chairs Jennifer and BJ Ducey, and Auction chairs Emily Adams, Greggory Fields Burk, and Leigh Anne Raymond. The Auction – A Knight in the 80’s! – was a record-breaking fundraiser and a joy-filled night for a sellout crowd of guests!

Last year, I asked that you please keep EHS in your prayers. I want to reiterate that request. We are a community that has so much to be thankful for. Your prayers and thanksgivings help orient our community toward God, support our School’s excellent teachers and staff, and lift up our students.

Episcopal High School operates debt‑free and is an excellent steward of every tuition and donated dollar. Philanthropy through annual giving and the Endowment covers about 12 percent of the School’s annual operating expenses.

Exceeding regional standards, Episcopal High School allocates at least 10 percent of our operating budget to financial aid. Lastly, as a strategic goal to attract and retain the best faculty and staff throughout the Four Pillars of academics, arts, athletics, and religion, compensation is the largest expense item in our budget.

Meet the New ’25-’26 Board Members SHELLEY TORIAN BARINEAU

Shelley is a native Texan and Houstonian who graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and Magna Cum Laude from the University of Houston School of Law. After law school, Shelley clerked for the Texas Supreme Court and practiced law at Andrews & Kurth, L.L.P. Currently, she is the Executive Vice President and General Counsel for Radney Management and Investments, Inc., where her primary focus is preservation of affordable housing, facilities, operations, and social services.

Shelley has spent more than 30 years as an active volunteer for her community.

She currently serves as a member of the Texas Children’s Cancer Center Advisory Board and the River Oaks Garden Club Board, Chair of Bayou Bend Gardens Board, and Trustee of Episcopal High School where she is Chair of the Construction Committee, responsible for overseeing the campus-wide building campaign.

Shelley and her husband Newt have been married 33 years and have four grown children. All four graduated from St. Francis Episcopal Day School and Episcopal High School–Blake ’16, Will ’18, Blair ’20, and Pierce ’24. Shelley and Newt are longtime members of St. Francis Episcopal Church.

KIM CLARK

With her husband Rob, Kim co-founded Insurance Market Solutions Group in 2009. Their business focuses on helping independent insurance agents gain market access to carriers that want to take on risk in the Texas property and casualty

market. Prior to this, Kim had a career in the energy industry concluding with her role as Chief Financial Officer for Merrill Lynch Global Commodities. Kim received her B.B.A. from Stephen F. Austin State University and her M.B.A. from the University of Houston.

Kim served on the Board of Trustees of Presbyterian School from 20112020, serving as Chair for four years after serving as Vice Chair for two years. During Kim’s tenure, the school completed the largest fundraising campaign in history to build a muchneeded education building, allowing Presbyterian to expand in order to reach more students and families.

Kim served as a board member of Nehemiah Center from 20082014 where she chaired the finance committee during a period requiring fundraising and rethinking the budget and business model of the program.

Kim and both of her daughters have been active members of the National Charity League from 2016-present, serving various organizations in the Houston community.

In addition, Kim has volunteered in a variety of roles at her children’s schools over the years.

Kim and Rob have been married for 24 years and have three children. Their son Currie ’25 graduated from EHS last spring, and their younger daughter Kate ’27 attends EHS. Their older daughter Sarah attends Washington & Lee University. Kim enjoys traveling,

cooking, and spending time with her family. The Clarks are members of First Presbyterian Church.

ANDREW B. HAWTHORN ’91

Andrew is a proud alumnus of Episcopal High School, Class of 1991. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Emory University and earned his M.B.A. from the Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University.

Andrew is currently the Product Planning Manager for AI Workstations in the Advanced Compute Solutions business at Hewlett-Packard. With over 20 years of experience in technology product strategy and execution, he has held various product management roles at Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, Dell EMC, and ESO, spanning both hardware and software solutions.

This is Andrew’s second term on the Board of Trustees. He has previously served on the Advancement, Governance, and Construction Committees and was Chair of the Community Life Committee. He is also a former member of the Alumni Directors Council. Beyond EHS, Andrew serves on the Alumni Advisory Board for the Emory EMS, a student-run emergency medical service.

Andrew lives and works in Austin.

Outside of his professional and nonprofit work, he enjoys the craft of smoking meats and barbecue, a hands-on hobby reflecting his appreciation for patience, technique, and bringing people together.

THE REV. PATRICK J. MILLER

THE REV. PATRICK J. MILLER

Patrick has served the parishes of St. Richard’s, Round Rock, Texas; St. Alban’s, Austin, Texas; Christ Church Cathedral, Houston, Texas; Christ Church, Greenwich, Connecticut; and the Episcopal Youth Community in Waco, Texas. Patrick is married to Allison Standish Miller, and they have two children. Catherine ’25 graduated from EHS last spring.

Patrick received his B.A. in Communication and Philosophy from Austin College in 1990 and his M.Div. from the Seminary of the Southwest in 2000. In February 2008, Patrick became the Rector of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and School. He serves as Executive Chairman of St. Mark’s Episcopal School and as a member of the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Endowment Board.

He also serves on the Diocese of Texas Insurance Task Force, Justice Forward (Development Committee), and Champion Institute as Development Chair.

Patrick was the lead designer of worship for the 171st-175th Diocesan Councils, Bishop Kathryn Ryan’s Consecration 2019, and the 2018 General Convention.

He has served on the Boards of Camp Allen (Program Committee), Christian Community Service Center (Board President), The Episcopal Foundation of Texas (Strategic Grants Committee), the Executive Board of the Diocese of Texas (Finance Committee), the Seminary of the Southwest (Advancement Chair), and the Combined Investment Opportunity Committee for the Diocese of Texas (Vice Chair). He was deputy to the General Convention in 2012, alternate in 2015, and deputy in 2018 (Cuba Committee), and a member of the Diocese of Texas Standing Committee 2006-2009. Outside of the parish, he served as a trustee to the North American Committee for St. George’s College Jerusalem and on the boards of The Beacon and Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston. He is an alumnus of The Texas Lyceum.

TAFT MOHAIR II

Taft and his wife Andrea are the proud parents of two children, Taft III ’26 and Amaya ’29. Whether traveling the world or enjoying meaningful conversations around the dinner table, Taft finds great joy in spending quality time with his family.

Taft earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Prairie View A&M University in 1995. He began his career as an engineer with Motorola and Texas Instruments before launching Empowered Insights in 2003, a training and development company. Through keynotes, seminars, and workshops, he equips leaders with practical tools for personal growth, leadership development, and long-term success. Taft is also a certified speaker, trainer, and coach with the John Maxwell Team, bringing proven leadership principles to individuals and organizations.

Taft has served in youth ministry for over 20 years, passionately mentoring young people and helping them grow in faith, character, and purpose.

ELISE DE COMPIEGNE SHATTO

ELISE DE COMPIEGNE SHATTO

Originally from Midland, Texas, Elise de Compiegne Shatto has lived in Houston since 1991. She graduated high school from Miss Porter’s School in Farmington, Connecticut and received a B.A. in English and Psychology from Vanderbilt University in 1989. Her son Henri ’26 will graduate in May from Episcopal High School. She previously worked as the public relations manager for Foley’s Department Stores, the American Diabetes Association, the Republican National Convention, and the U.S. Department of Commerce.

She served as a board trustee of Miss Porter’s School from 2014-2020 and The Baxter Trust from 2013-2019 and is currently a trustee for the de Compiegne-Wallace Foundation.

Additional nonprofit work includes serving on the Capital Campaign Committee of Presbyterian School and the volunteer board of Texas Children’s Hospital. Elise and Henri are members of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church and spend as much time as they can each summer in northern Michigan where she loves to hike. She also enjoys tennis, pickleball, and needlepoint. Her true love, however, is reading and books, and she never misses an opportunity to visit a local bookstore or library and supports numerous nonprofits that promote literacy and access to books.

Marlo Saucedo ’87 Marlo and husband Alex are officially empty nesters with one son at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and another at New York University. Even as she’ll miss her boys, Marlo is looking forward to traveling to see them and deepening her engagement with art. Now that the George Bush Intercontinental Airport's new International Terminal D is open, anyone traveling in or out of Gate D5 will see Marlo's installations: 7'x16' "Welcome to Houston," written in 130 languages, frames the exit door, and 16'x18.5' "Uniquely Houston" is on the lower level. Both were created with abstract artist Leslie Gaworecki specifically for the space. They are the first thing international travelers see as they exit into customs in Houston. Katheryn (Shaffer) Ray ’89, Melissa Cross ’89, and Jenny (Roman) Johnson ’90 accompanied Marlo and her family to see the pieces on a recent tour with airport curator Alton DuLaney. Marlo is currently working on artistic projects with the Houston Airport System and Apollo Chamber Players.

Kaitlyn King ’97 Kaitlyn began a new role in July at Annunciation Orthodox School in Houston as the Growth Program & Special Projects Coordinator. After more than 20 years of teaching middle school, she has transitioned into administration, where she now supports faculty in their professional growth and development. Mary Helen Kennedy ’18 Mary Helen is a designer at Van Meter Williams Pollack, an architecture firm focused on affordable housing and urban planning. This summer, she wrapped up her first project in construction administration—231 Grant, an apartment complex for educators in Palo Alto, California. Named The Acacia and completed in June 2025, the development will provide 110 high-quality, much-needed, affordable rental units for teachers who might otherwise be priced out of the communities they serve.

Alena was also awarded a summer undergraduate research grant (SURG), in which she conducted interview-based research on non-profit employees' experiences in the Chicago Area as part of the development of a play. Most recently, Alena received an English Teaching Assistantship Fulbright Award, and in July, she moved to Ibagué, Colombia to work as a teaching assistant at a university and support staff in their programming.

Max Finkelstein ’21 Max graduated from the University of Virginia last spring and is set to begin his professional career as an Investment Banking Analyst at Piper Sandler in Houston, where he will focus on the energy, power, and infrastructure sectors.

Alena Haney ’21 Alena graduated from Northwestern University in June 2025 with a B. A. in Communications, double majoring in Theatre and English Literature and minoring in Spanish. She was awarded Honors for her thesis about environmental theatre. While at Northwestern, Alena was active in numerous theatrical productions as an actor, lighting designer, and costume designer. Building on a love of playwriting, which started at EHS in an independent study her senior year, she continued to refine her voice in playwriting with original works featured twice in the Agnes Nixon Master Class and Festival. In 2023, Alena worked in Ecuador with an

Allie Williams ’24 Allie was named All-Mountain West Honorable Mention with 25 hits and six doubles in MW softball games. With the most hits by a freshman, she hit in 18 MW games and reached base in 20.

Allie was one of three freshmen to earn MW honors. While home on summer break, Allie worked as an intern for Hays Electrical Services in the marketing department.

EARLY FINANCE AND FUNDRAISING

“AN INCREDIBLE STORY TO TELL” Fifth in the series about the founding of Episcopal High School – Nancy Laufe Eisenberg, Former Associate Head of School

EHS Founders Larry Neuhaus, Lynda Underwood, Betty Key, and John Bonner and second Head of School Ned Becker prepare to burn the mortgage in 1998.

In EHS’s earliest days when the Founders had purchased the north acreage and had $9 million of debt and their eye on the south acreage, they continued with their capital campaign, initiated a year earlier, to raise the needed $15 million. But these were Houston’s most creative financial minds—they were not about to leave any stone unturned—so in addition to soliciting individuals, foundations, and corporations, they also floated some unusual schemes to come up with the needed funds. Jack Trotter suggested building a retirement home on a portion of the property where the baseball field now stands; and after enjoying a musical at Jones Hall, he proposed a $1000-a-head event at the venue.

Neither came to pass. In 1988 Trotter again floated the possibility of a retirement facility in the TC Jester area through which the School could receive income of $1 million per year. A one-bedroom unit would sell for $50,000 with additional monthly rent of $800. The project was not mentioned in the Board minutes again. Lynda Underwood was involved in conversations about a possible resale shop, which existed for a few years (“A lot of work for meager results,” she said), before morphing into the infamous and years-long garage sale. Having spoken with Baker Duncan, a friend of several Founders and the former Headmaster of Woodberry Forest, a boarding school in Virginia, Sid Smith investigated converting the third and fourth floors of the Convent to faculty studio apartments.

Paul Howell and Bishop Benitez

With a $15 million capital campaign launched early in 1982 to purchase and renovate the property, provide financial aid funds, and get the School up and running, Bishop Benitez and his cohorts went to work to raise the necessary funds. Paul Howell was appointed chair of the Capital Campaign Committee, and he, Jack Trotter, Bishop Benitez, and about eight to ten others met monthly during 1982 at the River Oaks Country Club and biweekly throughout 1983 to plan strategy and tactics. In addition to Benitez, Howell, and Trotter, committee members were W. Jack Bowen, John B. Connelly III, Howard W. Horne, Walter M. Mischer, Jr., Larry B. Neuhaus, Sidney V. Smith, Lynda Underwood, and Isabel Brown Wilson. As they met with foundations and individuals who might be interested in the creation of a new high school, Trotter described those years: “We had breakfast, lunch, and dinner raising funds!” After a year of negotiating with developer Wayne Duddleston, they purchased the north 18.9 acres for $10 million with a $9 million note in February 1983, including an option to buy the rest of the acreage. The $1 million down payment came from a number of those Houston area individuals and foundations.

Bishop Benitez shared the anecdote that when he and Trotter visited prospective donors, those solicited listened attentively and often said, “But I’m not Episcopalian.” “Neither am I,” replied Trotter. And then, “I hope you’ll join me.”

They usually did.

By June 1983, $5.9 million had been raised and the Founding Headmaster, The Rev. Dr. Warren R. “Jess” Borg, was appointed. The Special Gifts Division, headed by Lynda Underwood and Rick McCord and staffed by 47 volunteers, met in the Underwoods’ living room and personally contacted 300 families and raised $1.1 million in the final months of 1983. By January 1984, $10.6 million of

Episcopal High School opened to 149 freshmen and sophomores in August 1984. the $15 million had been raised from 225 donors, including 116 gifts of $10,000 or more, designating the donor as a Founder.

Of that $10.6 million, $6.5 million was pledged by the Founding Board of Trustees. Paul and Evelyn Howell donated $1 million in honor of Bishop and Joanne Benitez. According to Bishop Benitez’s 2008 Founders Day homily, the Howells’ condition for the gift was that the Chapel be named in honor of the Benitezes, even over the Bishop’s strong objections.

As of November 1983, designed by architect Graham Luhn, the $2 million renovation effort was underway, beginning with Phase 1, the overhaul of the old Marian buildings, including a new roof; new plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems; thermal insulation; brickwork; lathing; plastering; and a new ceiling system. Bids for Phase 2–the Chapel, and Phase 3–grounds and fields, would be ready for bidding by March 1984. As of June 1984, a Long-range Planning Committee, chaired by Sid Smith, was formed to create and discuss a model of the existing facilities designed to serve 450 students by 1988, using the original 19.8 acres. Once the needs were determined, the Committee would decide how many of the remaining acres of the original tract would be needed. In the last quarter of 1984, the School purchased the last 12 acres, including the Convent, for $10 million, having purchased 6.9 south acres (half of it sold to Post Oak School) in December 1983. (See diagram on page 41.)

1984. The first Canine Follies, morphing into the indoor and evening Auction Gala in a few years, was held in 1985 and chaired by Carolyn Farb, raising $45,517.

Bob Boudreaux of KTRK announced the dogs, brought by students, faculty, and families; and the auction was held on hay bales in the hot sun. Susan Mayfield, the event chair with Becky Cooke in 198687, spearheaded efforts for the event to become an evening Auction Gala at the Warwick Hotel the following year.

After that, the Gala moved to the River Oaks Country Club until 2018 when it returned to campus with the opening of the Hildebrand Athletic Center.

When the campaign was closed in December 1984, the Founders had raised $15,404,430, including $7,029,729 in leadership gifts from the Board of Trustees and 364 gifts in the Founder category of $10,000 and above.

During the 1985-1986 school year, the School’s second in operation, a small capital campaign was initiated to fund the renovation of the Convent. Moving the arts classes from the old Marian building to the Convent would not only improve the arts facilities, but it would also open up space for academic classes needed to serve the expanding student population.

The $3 Million Capital Campaign Committee, chaired by Jack Trotter, included Bishop Benitez, Paul Howell, Susan Ray Mayfield, E. McCall Rotan, Sid Smith, and Lynda Underwood.

In September 1986, the Board approved Trotter’s plan to refinance the Duddleston

Group loan of $11.5 million, for which EHS was in arrears for the interest payments and which Duddleston agreed to discount to $9 million. Shortly thereafter, Trotter arranged for a note of $8.08 million to be taken over by American General with a 25-year amortization, a seven-year balloon at 10%, and no prepayment penalty. This would allow Duddleston to be paid $7.75 million (paid in November 1986) with $1.25 million due in five years with no interest, to be paid quarterly from 10% of the pledges received beginning January 1, 1987. It was also required that $500,000 of the balance be guaranteed by the EHS Board members.

Interestingly, at the Board meeting of April 1987, Larry Neuhaus reported talks regarding a merger in which the Post Oak School would become part of EHS. Neuhaus recommended setting up a committee to further explore, but subsequent minutes through 1992 do not reflect further conversation.

As the economy soured and interest rates soared, the School was not able to pay even the interest after September 1987, and Trotter looked into ways in which the American General loan could be restructured. On November 2, 1988, Bishop Benitez sent a letter to the trustees outlining his proposal to American General:  We will raise $10 million by January 15, 1989 or close the School. If we cannot raise the funds, we do not deserve to have this fine school.  We will pay American General $5 million per year over the next two years.  Over those two years, American General will charge no interest.  Our debt as of January 1, 1989 includes all penalties, past due interest, and interest on accrued interest.

In a second letter dated January 17, 1989, the Bishop announced that the School had reached its goal of $10.5 million, averting closure. American General had accepted the School’s proposal, and EHS now had a two-year window where no interest would be charged against the debt of $18 million. Every dollar raised would go toward principal. The Bishop also announced the launch of Phase II of the campaign to raise $8 million over the next two years with Paul Howell as chair of fundraising.

Two years later the School was struggling again. The Board needed to figure out a way to pay off the burdensome debt. Many foundations would not make gifts for debt, and even individuals preferred to contribute to building, renovation, or program.

Finally, at the Board meeting of May 17, 1991, “The Plan” was announced: The School would raise $10 million from foundations and $5 million from individuals and would ask American General to discount $3 million from the $18 million debt. If American General agreed, EHS would announce a $15 million capital campaign. The Bishop and trustee leaders would spend the next nine months working with American General to come up with an agreement. At the Board meeting of September 18, 1991, with a $700,000 interest payment due, “the Board elected to defer any payment to American General until further notice.” It was reported that David Underwood and the Bishop had visited with Harold Hook, Chair of the Board of American General, with a proposal to discount the loan, which he would consider.

If he failed to agree, they outlined two options to the trustees.

The School could raise $10 million and reapproach the lender, or the School could use a land-swap to deed the Ellipse and some playing fields to American General.

After several more months of negotiating, the Bishop announced the compromise with American General at the February 12, 1992 Board meeting. The agreement canceled $3-$4 million in interest, as well as the $700,000 delinquent September interest payment, and required that the School pay off the remaining principal by January 31, 1995. The last payment was to be $5.4 million. Jack Trotter said he felt they could raise the other annual payments of $2.5 million by March 15, 1992, $3 million by January 31, 1993, and $3.5 million by January 31, 1994, but would not be able to pay the $5.4 million

by January 31, 1995. At the suggestion of Bishop Benitez, Joel Shannon, Rick McCord and Larry Neuhaus met with the Church Corporation for the Diocese of Texas asking for a commitment that they would loan the School the $5.4 million if the School could not come up with the payment. Although the Church Corporation turned the School down, one of the men in the room full of older men said that he would loan the money through a fund he represented, the Bishop Quin Foundation.

The terms would be a three-year, low-interest note for whatever amount of the total they required. The Bishop worked with another foundation who would help pay the interest if needed.

With those commitments, the School agreed to the payment plan American General offered. The Bishop signed the agreement with American General on behalf of the School and the Diocese, and the trustees got to work raising the funds needed for the March 15 payment of $2.5 million, only one month hence. At the Board meeting of March 11, 1992, four days before the first payment was due, Rick McCord asked to pick up the check for $2.5 million from Business Manager Mike Richards that Friday, March 13, so that he could hand deliver it to American General.

Following McCord’s request, according to recorded minutes, Neuhaus and McCord reported to the trustees: “The School is in the best position it has ever been in. We now have a plan to pay off the land and buildings with all raised moneys going to principal. Applications for enrollment are up. This is an incredible story to tell.”

There’s an oft-told accounting from the mid-nineties—around the due date of the final payment—that originates in the deal with American General. During a fundraising meeting held at the Briar Club when the School was about $1.5 to $2 million short of paying off the final $5.4 million to the lender, Jack Trotter asked everyone to sign a pledge as to what they could give or raise. As he read off the commitments, it became clear that not enough had been pledged. At that point, Trotter said no one would leave the room until the full amount was committed. No one left. When he went around the room verbally, he had the necessary pledges.

After raising the initial $15 million between 1982 and 1984; withstanding the economic rollercoaster of the late 1980’s; and relentlessly approaching individuals, corporations, and foundations—some multiple times—the Founders and trustees had raised $30.4 million by 1990

(Phases I and II) and initiated the final phase of the campaign in January 1992 with a goal of $15.5 million, co-chaired

by Larry Neuhaus and John Austin III. Steering Committee members The Rt. Rev. Maurice M. Benitez, Jack Trotter, Lynda Underwood, Sidney V. Smith, Paul N. Howell, Peter Wareing, Rick McCord, Vic Kormeier, Wayne Fox, and Joel Shannon led the effort. “With God’s help and additional pledges from families, friends, and foundations, we will complete this campaign,” announced Neuhaus.

“Every gift will make a difference.”

In a celebratory Chapel ceremony in 1998, with the student body, faculty, Founders, and trustees in attendance, the School finally burned the mortgage!

Indeed, this is an incredible story to tell!

FROM THE CHIEF DEVELOPMENT OFFICER Each fall, our campus comes alive again—and it’s always a joy to see students diving into a new year. It’s also the perfect time to reflect and thank the incredible community of donors, volunteers, and supporters who help Episcopal High School thrive as a Four-Pillar School.

Thanks to your generosity, our fundraising efforts raised more than $3 million for the annual operating budget and more than $14 million for capital projects. These gifts—through the EHS Fund, Auction, and Capital Campaign—have a direct and lasting impact on every corner of campus both inside and outside the classroom.

ANNUAL GIVING Annual giving supports approximately 8% of our yearly budget and includes both the EHS Fund and the Auction. These funds are used in the year in which they are raised to support all Four Pillars, and we couldn’t do it without the dedication of our amazing volunteers.

EHS FUND The ’24–’25 campaign, led by Jennifer and BJ Ducey and vicechairs Rochelle and Seth Bullock, saw over 80 volunteers rally our families. Thanks to them—and to you—we had another strong year.

Rochelle and Seth will now lead the ’25–’26 campaign, and I hope you’ll answer their call with continued support.

AUCTION This past year’s Auction, A Knight in the 80’s, was an unforgettable evening thanks to chairs Emily Adams, Greggory Fields Burk, and Leigh Anne Raymond—and 100+ volunteers! With more than $1 million raised through both the A Knight in the 80's evening and the Online Auction, the event was a remarkable celebration of community spirit and generosity.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN Since acquiring our campus in 1983, we’ve worked to grow and improve our facilities to match our Mission. Milestones include the Trotter Academic Building (2012), Hildebrand Athletic Center (2017), Underwood Student Center (2018), and new athletic fields (2020/2021.)

Current capital fundraising projects include the completion of the Crain-Galloway Center for the Arts (opening early 2026) and the renewal of the Benitez Chapel, which is on the horizon and will complete our 2014 Campus Master Plan—a comprehensive plan shaped by countless, dedicated Board of Trustees members, who thoughtfully explored how to best utilize our cherished 34 acres in Central Houston—balancing the needs of facilities, athletic fields, and green space.

As Bishop Andy Doyle reminds us, “We raise money and build buildings to create a space— and a community—that is intentionally different from the world around us.”

VOLUNTEERS Everything we do is powered by volunteers—whether it’s concessions, team and stage parents, or major event committees.

The Construction Committee is devoted to reimagining our facilities to enhance the EHS student experience and create state-of-the-art learning environments. It is the Committee's humble goal to construct the Crain-Galloway Center for the Arts (CGCA) so that it surpasses community expectations! Currently, the project is tracking on budget and expected to open for student use, on time, early in 2026.

The performance venue, Sarofim Hall, is the CGCA's show-stopper and first-of-its-kind in Houston! This unique design provides an intimate and fully immersive experience while retaining its ability to quickly transform into multiple configurations. Sarofim Hall can seamlessly change from a traditional theatre with graduated seats and an elevated stage to a single-level black box for a thrust stage or theatre-in-theround. The fully operational catwalks enhance EHS's robust stagecraft program, and the closed-circuit TV allows actors to follow the on-stage production in real-time. Sarofim Hall boasts state-of-the-art acoustics that can effortlessly accommodate live orchestra, band performances, and the spoken word. With meeting space capacity for up to 250 people, Sarofim Hall gives EHS a new place to practice, perform, gather, assemble, and build community.

The CGCA's comprehensive design also includes efficiently renovated spaces that encompass every discipline of the Arts Pillar at EHS. Our devoted faculty has collaborated extensively with Studio Red Architects to carefully plan these reimagined teaching spaces for program optimization. The project touches every aspect of our arts offerings, including ceramics, sculpture, band, orchestra, moviemaking, photography, broadcasting, newspaper, studio arts, stagecraft, and a new costume production space. No discipline has been overlooked in this comprehensive and ambitious project.

While functionality and value are our primary mission, the Construction Committee takes pride in adding a little magic into every design. The CGCA's hidden gems include some special indoor and outdoor community spaces. We look forward to seeing our Knights hanging out, connecting, and building bonds of friendship. To be sure, we have plenty of Knight power (aka plugs) so we can literally–and figuratively–recharge while chilling out.

AUC TION 2025:

A KNIGHT in the 80’s On February 21, 2025, the EHS the community gathered to celebrate Episcopal High School’s 41st Auction, A Knight in the 80’s.

Co-Chairs, Emily Adams, Greggory Fields Burk, and Leigh Anne Raymond, along with countless volunteers and generous donors, raised vital revenue for the School’s operating budget.

The rad evening began with a cocktail hour before moving into the Ballroom for dinner catered by City Kitchen. During the Pillars Up portion of the evening, the EHS community generously donated to support the Four Pillars. We gathered to celebrate and support our School, which itself traces its strong traditions and wonderful spirit – that for which we stand out – back to the 80’s.

The Live Auction was led by Auctioneer Adren Pilger before party-goers danced the night away with 80’s band Skyrocket!

Now we gear up for Auction 2026. Co-Chairs, Staci Donovan, Chelsea Pacey, and Helen Wright, are looking forward to a groovy good time as we celebrate Get Down ToKNIGHT! Save the date for Friday, February 20, 2026.

PARENTS ASSOCIATION Under the leadership of Parents Association President Bonny Edwards, this organization began its work in May 2024 preparing for luncheons, speakers, informative talks/discussions, Auction 2025, and many more activities that would not be possible without this group of talented and hardworking women.

As the summer began, several committees were at work planning for the school year. The Parent-to-Parent Committee and Mentor Moms welcomed new families and helped make their transition from middle school to high school as stress-free as possible. They were there to answer questions and prepare the families as they entered the EHS community.

Parent representatives helped plan fundraising events specific to each class. Poinsettia and concession stand sales raised funds to help support the freshman class. Homecoming 2024, A Knight in Rio, hosted by the sophomore class, saw the largest attendance ever. The Senior Style Show, Hollywood Knights—Keeping it Real, featured the artistry and style of the senior class as they walked the runway. With the Style Show back on campus, the Alkek Gymnasium was transformed into a New York runway. Both the Style Show and Homecoming had the largest number of participants in School history.

Our EHS moms’ participation was on full display with break cookies, spirit treats, library help, staff relief (Crain Hall/Convent desks), and the HANDS group assisting with collating, labeling, and mailing for the Development/Auction Office. Volunteers could be seen on campus putting up academic honors flyers, decorating for the holidays, and planning for special events throughout the year. Our Moms in Prayer and Care Committee continued to serve the entire EHS community through prayer and deeds.

The 2025-26 Parents Association will be in good hands, not missing a beat, under the capable leadership of 2025-26 President Mindy Rippstein.

DADS CLUB The Episcopal High School Dads Club, in its 39th year of operation, contributed financial support, volunteer hours, friendship, and enthusiasm to the EHS community. The Dads Club success is highlighted by the hard work of the executive board and club members.

EHS offers many opportunities for our dads, and we welcome their participation in community events. These gentlemen work throughout the year to provide the School with the tools necessary for extraordinary student success.

Under the leadership of Brian Sauer for the 2024-25 school year, the EHS Dads Club contributed $81,500 to the School, supporting all Four Pillars and the community as a whole. To list a few of our funding projects, during the past year the EHS Dads Club helped to fund polo shirts for all faculty and staff, an athletic inflatable run-through, new cameras for Photography, weight room technology equipment, and Christmas and endof-year dinners for the food service staff. This group continues to financially support Got Blue T-Shirts for the senior class, Field Knight, opening night dinners for EHS OnStage, end-of-year lunch for faculty and staff, Pillar support, student appreciation events, Pink Ribbon Knight, Challenger football and basketball events, College Counseling events, and Dads Club Breakfasts.

It is our “hands-on” philosophy that makes the Dads Club successful. The 2023-24 board agreed to fund the purchase of a new school bus to be used by the EHS community with a pledge of $110,000 to be paid off over a four-year period. The dads’ personal involvement at EHS has proven to be a wonderful addition to campus life. Will Stacy, President for the 2025-26 school year, is ready to meet the challenge of leading this group to another strong year.

The annual Spring Golf Tournament, our main fundraiser, will be played on Monday, April 13 at Westwood Club. We hope you will join us!

ENDOWMENT UPDATE The Endowment Fund serves as a long-term investment vehicle for Episcopal High School. The basic purpose and primary goal is to achieve long-term appreciation of principal and to provide distributions to help fund financial aid and the operation and maintenance of the School's properties and programs as directed by the Episcopal High School Endowment Fund Board.

The board continues to focus strategically not only to enhance the long-term sustainability of the School, but also to help the School keep tuition increases at minimal levels now and in future years.

As of June 30, 2025, the Endowment Fund ended with a balance of $64 million. In 20242025, the endowment contributed $2.05 million to the School’s annual operating budget of $38.2 million, and once again the board is pleased that the Endowment Fund could make a contribution of that significance to the daily operating needs of the School.

Fiscal year 2025 was an accommodating twelve months for the global markets, although it was noticeably split into two halves. The first six months were driven by the Federal Reserve cutting interest rates in the wake of easing inflation, which led to strong performance from equities, particularly growth stocks. As inflation proved stubborn into early 2025 and the Artificial Intelligence momentum hiccupped, questions around future rate reductions arose, and international equity markets began to materially outperform their U.S. counterparts.

Uncertainty around tariffs began in April, leading to a nearly 20% decline in U.S. equities, though this was followed by a rapid rebound that saw new market highs on June 30. The Endowment Fund’s diversified portfolio performed in line with its diversified portfolio benchmark with a calendar year-to-date gain of 6.0% and a 13.2% gain for the fiscal year.

Episcopal High School’s Endowment Fund welcomes contributions and pledges of any amount.

The Endowment Fund is a perfect way to preserve a donor’s charitable intent for generations to come. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the grieving families who lost loved ones in the tragic Hill Country flooding.

SALLY SAMPLE GRAVES It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of a beloved member of our community and devoted EHS champion, Sally Sample Graves.

Sally was known for her sharp intellect, quick wit, and gracious spirit. Sally graduated high school in Longview before continuing her studies at Southern Methodist University and the University of Texas at Austin. From her early days in Longview throughout her university years and beyond, she possessed a lifelong commitment to education and helping to shape opportunities for generations of students.

Sally had a quiet but powerful way of making a difference. Whenever she learned of initiatives or campaigns that promised new opportunities for students, she was quick to lend her support. Her generosity and encouragement made a lasting impact—from the School’s formative years to our most recent efforts to grow and thrive.

We are grateful for the legacy she leaves behind and the countless lives she touched through her steadfast support of Episcopal High School.
