The Power of REACH One simple, yet powerful idea defines the work and progress achieved by the Englewood Hospital and Medical Center Foundation: REACH. This Annual Report celebrates many successes attained by the Medical Center and the philanthropy that made them possible. By challenging all stakeholders—Trustees, physicians, employees, volunteers and benefactors—to do more, stretch further and aim higher, EHMC’s impact and influence in the region will continue to flourish.

2016 marked a record setting year for philanthropy. Over $18.6 million was contributed by 4,745 benefactors to support programs, technology and facility modernization to position EHMC as the region’s leading healthcare resource. Gifts and pledges to Transforming the Future: Our Campaign for Englewood Hospital and Medical Center reached over $43.3 million toward our $50 million goal, once again demonstrating the unparalleled commitment of this community to advancing the Medical Center’s mission. The impact of these investments is profound and present in the humanistic, compassionate care provided to each patient every day.

Last year, the Medical Center served more patients than at any point in its 126-year history. The scope of our programs continued to extend outward, and increasing numbers of communities in northern New Jersey benefited from EHMC’s expertise and life-enhancing care. We set rigorous benchmarks for quality and safety that others seek to emulate and produced phenomenal results. Our physicians are nationally recognized innovators who continually break new ground. Our dedicated nurses and clinicians have raised the bar for humanistic care. Our leadership is intentional about growth and every new investment is designed to address the most relevant medical issues affecting those in our community.

The remarkable reach achieved by EHMC in 2016 is certainly a testament to the passion and generosity of our benefactors. We are deeply grateful for your support.

EHMC was recognized among the Top 10% of hospitals in the nation for cancer care. CareChexÂŽ awarded the distinction to the Medical Center based on its processes of care, outcomes and patient experiences.

REACHING MORE

Overwhelming support for Transforming the Future: Our Campaign for Englewood Hospital and Medical Center is impacting the lives of thousands of patients and their families. Philanthropist Ronald Lefcourt, President and Founder of Alliance Shippers, Inc., made the lead gift that named The Lefcourt Family Cancer Treatment and Wellness Center in November 2016 expanding the Medical Center’s capacity to provide outstanding, humanistic care to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer.

The opportunity to revolutionize cancer care, enhance maternity services and help EHMC respond to the healthcare needs of the region inspired 268 donors who committed $14.9 million to the $50 million Capital Campaign in 2016. Forty-nine benefactors made gifts of $25,000 or more, propelling Transforming the Future to $43.3 million of its ultimate goal at year end. “The advances EHMC has made in the past 10 years are significant and exciting,” says Peggy Kabakow, who made a generous commitment to Transforming the Future. “I want to be a part of the next great wave of progress.”

EHMC earned its fourth consecutive MagnetÂŽ designation. This is the highest recognition for nursing excellence, awarded to only 7% of U.S. hospitals each year.

REACHING NEW STANDARDS

Sustained giving and award winning care go hand-in-hand. With 2,773 donors and $1.98 million raised for the Annual Fund, the community demonstrated its commitment to raising quality care even higher. This vital support is invested in programs, services, professional education and clinical research, strengthening our culture of excellence and humanistic care that is consistently recognized with national awards and prominent designations.

Members of the Physician Partners Program have been an instrumental resource for the Medical Center in which they practice. In fact, physician participation in the philanthropic program doubled in 2016. “Physicians recognize that their support is a powerful example to others of our belief in the vision and direction of the Medical Center,” says Physician Partner Aaron Capuano, MD. “Hopefully, our dedication to the EHMC Foundation inspires more patients and community members to give.”

Record Year for Treatment and Clinical Care

The total number of national, state and regional awards and honors bestowed in recognition of outstanding care and services provided by EHMC in 2016.

The number of patients enrolled in studies at the Clinical Research Center in 2016. The contributions of EHMC physician-investigators advanced multiple medical specialties that ranged from clinical drug trials to innovative treatments for cancer, cardiology, gastroenterology and surgery.

The number of EHMC physicians, employees and volunteers who participated in leadership development, communication and technical courses to provide even more effective care to the patients we are privileged to serve.

Our engagement with the community has never been greater. Participation in the Walk for Awareness skyrocketed by 41% in 2016.

REACHING OUR

A breakthrough year for special events brought the EHMC Foundation into the heart of the community. The generosity and enthusiastic participation of 2,154 friends and donors at signature events underscores the dedication and pride our neighbors place in the Medical Center. Bringing thousands of people together at Foundation gatherings also produced successful philanthropic outcomes that have a lasting impact on our region.

The 2016 Walk for Awareness drew over 1,300 participants and generated $160,000 to provide uninsured women access to life-saving services at The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center. The $1.3 million raised at the annual Gala transformed support into action by funding investments and improvements that build healthier communities. “EHMC is such an important asset for northern New Jersey,” says J. Agresta, President, Benzel-Busch Motor Corp., a presenting sponsor of the annual Gala and Golf Classic. “We are honored to partner with a Medical Center that is at the forefront of healthcare.”

The increase in people helped at more than 350 health fairs, screenings and other community events over the previous year. In 2016, attendance at EHMC outreach events was more than 50,000.
