In November of 2023, Englewood Health’s Nurse Residency Program proudly earned accreditation as a Practice Transition Accreditation Program® (PTAP) from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. This distinction illustrates Englewood Health’s overarching commitment to nurturing the next generation of nursing professionals.
For The Kaplen Institute for Nursing Excellence at Englewood Health, the hard work toward building an accredited Nurse Residency Program began in 2019 with one clear goal in mind – develop a collaborative learning environment where novice nurses gain the confidence and skill sets needed in real-life clinical practice.

All Englewood Hospital nurses hired with less than one year of professional experience are enrolled in the 12-month Nurse Residency Program. It includes a multi-day orientation and monthly four-hour seminars that incorporate lectures, group work and simulation activities. New nurses are assigned a preceptor who guides clinical hands-on experience. Opportunities for practice-based learning are provided in areas not typical for new nurses, such as labor and delivery, the operating room, the emergency department and intensive care unit.
To date, more than 100 nurses have successfully completed their residency, including Betsy Santos and Lydia Park from the Alice and Bruce Youngman and Family Neurology/Oncology Patient Care Unit. Nurses like them join Englewood and stay because of an unmatched level of professional development that supports career goals. “Once you complete residency, you’re a more confident nurse with the independence and strong clinical skills needed to deliver the highest quality care,” said Betsy. This is a definitive advantage for patients and families throughout the region who depend on Englewood Health for clinical excellence.

Englewood Health nurse residents in a simulation exercise
Annually, Forbes surveys thousands of employees from various sectors to recognize employers who provide an excellent working environment, competitive compensation, professional growth, inclusivity and an overall positive culture. Recognition from Forbes as one of America’s 2023 Best In-State Employers is a big win for Englewood Health and patients throughout the region, including Demarest resident David Singer. In October of last year, David arrived at Englewood Health by ambulance. Tests revealed a life-threatening bacterial heart infection. Several rounds of powerful intravenous antibiotics produced little improvement and doctors told David that he needed open heart surgery. The news was both unexpected and overwhelming.

This experience proves that world-class healthcare is right here in our community. Everyone at Englewood Health – from the Emergency Department team to the nurses and doctors to the patient transporters –demonstrated an outstanding level of personalized care. There was just a feeling that I was in good hands.”

Following successful surgery and the recommended recovery time, David began cardiovascular rehabilitation at Englewood Health. He bumped into his heart surgeon, Dr. Adam Arnofsky, in the lobby following a session, quickly extending his hand to reintroduce himself and share an exciting progress report. But it was his doctor who spoke first with a congratulatory acknowledgment of David’s recent return to the pickleball court. As the two chatted, he realized that although it had been many weeks since the surgery, his clinical team continued to collaborate and remain engaged in his road to recovery. There it was –that feeling again.
That feeling is rooted in a collaborative spirit and shared commitment among more than 4,000 Englewood Health team members to deliver high-quality, innovative care to every patient. Philanthropy advances this mission by fostering an award-winning work environment through continuing education and wellness programs, clinical research opportunities, state-of-the-art technology and so much more. When you think about places to go for good conversation, warm smiles and laughs, the Englewood Health Wound Care Center might not immediately come to mind. Except that is exactly what Teaneck-resident and patient Debra Cole-Ferguson finds when receiving treatment at the center. “It is easy to see that everyone who works at Englewood Health is happy to be there. Englewood Health is at the forefront of clinical innovation. But beyond diagnostic, imaging and surgical advancements, it is digital technology that is quickly becoming a driving force. In 2023, Englewood Health earned recognition as a Most Wired Hospital by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) for its commitment to leveraging technology to enhance patient engagement.
Central to advancing digitally integrated care at Englewood Health is Epic. The electronic health records system hosts all patient records, tests, physicians’ notes and treatments in one central hub. It is a robust tool essential to ensuring continuity of care between Englewood Hospital, over 100 Englewood Health Physician Network locations and numerous outpatient care centers.
Outside the clinical setting, remote technology helps patients and their care teams stay connected. Patients with acute and chronic conditions hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular disease sophisticated electronic devices at home to monitor and securely transmit data to their physicians. Results are overwhelmingly positive thanks to earlier intervention. This leads to improved outcomes, better adherence to treatment and a reduction in hospital readmissions.

In a 2023 text messaging pilot program, Englewood Health leveraged this popular technology to empower patients with a more integrated and convenient way to set appointments. More than 7,000 patients received a mammogram reminder text with an actionable, one-touch self-scheduling option. This proactive outreach resulted in a 33% patient engagement rate. More than 79% completed their mammogram within 60 days and breast cancer was identified in some pa With this success in closing gaps in care, additional text campaigns for lung and colorectal cancer screenings are underway. This model is also now in use to provide scheduling ease for radiology testing and provider referrals.
Ongoing investments will continue to make programs like this possible. Using today’s most innovative technology, we reimagine the delivery of healthcare to our community, improve the well-being of countless patients and ultimately save lives.

A WIN IN PATIENT CARE
Patient rooms in Englewood Hospital are equipped with Epic monitors and large interactive whiteboards that optimize information flow and improve the patient care experience. Care team names, medications, treatment schedules and recovery goals are easily viewed by patients and their families, who are also able to review messages from their care team. Clinicians utilize these dashboards for team collaboration on active medications, vitals, lab results, imaging orders and other important patient details.
