TRANSFORMATIONAL ACCESS After several visits at other medical facilities, a Jersey City woman accumulated an arsenal of imaging reports and clinical findings, yet no definitive answers to an “abnormal mammogram.” Growing increasingly concerned, she made an appointment at the Englewood Health ZT Systems Outpatient Center, where doors opened just a few days earlier. It was her first experience at Englewood Health. After meeting with an Englewood Health breast radiologist for a comprehensive review, she was immediately scheduled for a stereotactic biopsy. The diagnosis was grade-2 invasive breast cancer.

Thankfully, high-quality diagnostic care, steps from home, saved this patient’s life. It is one of many stories underscoring the Center’s impressive impact. Englewood Health Oncologist Dr. Rini Palathingal calls it nothing short of a game changer. Practicing in Jersey City for more than 20 years, she knows a thing or two about the importance of access to care and this amazing community.

Established with a historic philanthropic gift from ZT Systems, this 75,000-square-foot outpatient center opened at 2 Journal Square in late 2022. It was a decision with clear purpose: create a single multispecialty facility to deliver continuity of high-quality care to a diverse and often underserved community. Patients are taking notice. Urgent care, primary care, diagnostics and imaging, and specialty services that include world-class cancer care are changing the health dynamic in this community. It is a shift that matters — one that saves lives.

A PROMISE TO LIVE BY When they met junior year at Syracuse University, Fred and Merle Fish connected instantly. Soon, they were inseparable – studying together, going to dances, cheering for the Orange and volunteering as camp counselors. A shared interest in giving back bonded the couple. The following year, as seniors, Fred made Merle a bold promise:

Merle and Fred Fish

Fred was born and raised in Englewood. Fifty-four years later, he and Merle proudly call this beloved community home. They continue to live their promise of service with two children, four granddaughters and Englewood Health at the core. Their long-standing relationship with the health system includes campaign and event leadership service. Merle enthusiastically serves as an Englewood Health Foundation Trustee and credits this experience as motivation for their steadfast philanthropic support. In recognition of their enduring generosity, the Foundation is pleased to announce the naming of the Merle and Fred Fish and Family Mother/Baby Unit.

This benchmark of excellence is made possible with philanthropic support and good news for patients like Kimberle. At just 51 years old, she was diagnosed with colorectal cancer for the third time. After seeking several other professional opinions, Kimberle chose to receive treatment at Englewood Health. She credits her care team, led by surgeon Anna Serur, MD, and oncologist Minaxi P. Jhawer, MD, for changing the course of her life.

In 2022, Englewood Health surgeons performed nearly all non-emergent colorectal procedures using the state-of-the-art da Vinci® surgical system. This is a more than 70% higher utilization rate than other regional institutions, making Englewood Health a frontrunner in the adoption of robotic colorectal surgery. The expertly trained surgeons at Englewood Health embrace the da Vinci® robot system because the technology aligns with their sophisticated skill sets and proficiency, helping elevate the level of care

Clouds could not cast a shadow on the amazing turnout for the 2022 Walk for Awareness!
