Throughout the last year, more times than I can count, my mind wandered to a different, easier time. One April afternoon as I prepared donated meals for the ICU, I found myself in the front row of Shubert Theater watching a Broadway musical favorite, A Chorus Line.

The jaw-dropping dance routines amazed the audience as flawlessly choreographed performers moved effortlessly in unison with purposeful precision. The brilliant synchrony a clear demonstration of all that is possible when working together.

For our community, 2020 was a year unlike any other. Not only because we fought a battle against an unprecedented global pandemic, but in the way that we did it: together, arm-in-arm with shared laser focus and strength. From health system leadership to the tireless Englewood Health clinical team to the tremendous outpouring of community support, we were one. We carried a singular goal to save lives, and we did.

A Bergen County father of three was one of those lives. He, like thousands of others throughout our communities, turned to Englewood Health in a time of need.

In the pages that follow, you will read about his journey and the role philanthropy plays in ensuring access to world-class clinical care. It is proof that impressive and real progress is rooted in the sum of the parts – the whole. We are so very grateful to you—our singular sensations!

Delivering HOPE

ONE Patient at a Time Fabian’s Journey Begins on April 13, 2020

Rain pelted the windshield as the car’s wipers thumped quickly in rhythm. Fabian gripped the wheel as he struggled to concentrate on the road ahead. He was very weak. Feeling ill for more than two weeks, a second visit to his local urgent care center disclosed dangerously low oxygen levels. Now he made his way alone to Englewood Health where he hoped for answers. He needed to get better, and quickly. His wife was pregnant with their first child and he longed to be back by her side. Shortly after stumbling into Englewood Health’s Emergency Department, 38-year-old Fabian Tasama was diagnosed with COVID-19.

Englewood Health Chief of Medicine Dr. Alexandra Gottdiener – on the frontline throughout the pandemic – recalls how the clinical team worked in unison with the support of the community to care for countless patients.

As the inpatient census climbed, we expanded our team to include redeployed 2

physicians and clinicians unable to see patients because of the shutdown. Their daily phone calls kept families informed about their loved ones in our care. Health system employees delivered meals, transformed hospital space and so much more. It was a collective effort, all day and every day.

We continually felt the support of our community and, in so many ways, they were an essential part of our team. The Power to Prepare Fund kept us safe and nourished. While we faced supply challenges on everything from PPE to ventilators, donors helped ensure we had whatever we needed to care for patients.

In mid-April, with more than 200 COVIDpositive patients in our hospital, so much about this virus was still unknown. I led a daily multi-disciplinary round focused on key metrics, new challenges and latest developments. The summary was distributed to the entire team, allowing for a quick pivot in applying new protocols. As one example, when we began seeing COVID-19 patients developing blood clots from the inflammatory response, we increased the use of anti-coagulation medication to avoid embolisms, heart attacks and strokes. That remains part of our standard treatment.

On April 17, after one week as an inpatient, Fabian was cleared to return home.

Hundreds of Englewood Health staff gathered at the hospital for a celebratory clap-out. He was the 500th COVID-19 patient to be discharged.

Keeping Families

TOGETHER as ONE Fabian Takes a Dramatic Turn for the Worse on April 18, 2020

The wailing siren echoed loudly in Fabian’s ears as his body rocked back and forth with every bend in the road. He opened his eyes just enough to bring into focus the caring eyes of a frontline EMS worker who sat at the end of his stretcher. Just 24 hours after returning home following treatment for COVID-19, Fabian suffered a heart attack and was now on his way back to Englewood Health by ambulance. Frightened, Fabian’s mind quickly shuffled through images of his life like a deck of cards.

He anxiously wondered why his life was spared just a week earlier only to now have it taken from him.

Englewood Health Foundation Board of Trustees Chairman Michael Gutter shares his thoughts as to why access to nationally recognized cardiac care is so important.

Affecting one in four, heart disease is the leading cause of death. In 2020, my family and I chose to make a gift to the Cardiovascular Health Center at Englewood Health with the desire to help elevate cardiovascular performance to an

even higher level. Donor support allows Englewood Health to recruit and retain the best and brightest clinical talent while increasing the ability to adopt new technologies and cutting-edge equipment.

Additionally, I believe we must continue investing in community-based educational and preventative programs, like Health E Englewood, which promotes adult health and wellness. Also, Live Well Englewood is designed to improve access to preventative care and promote behavioral lifestyle changes. With strong and ongoing support, all of us will have access to world-class cardiac care, right in our backyard.

When I was in first grade, my grandfather died of a heart attack. He was only 75 and a big part of my young life. My grandmother outlived her pacemaker, which needed four battery changes, before she passed away at the age of 99. For me, this is evidence that quality healthcare saves lives and keeps families together longer.

Forever

CHANGED in ONE Moment Fabian Returns Home to a New Bundle of Joy Born on June 26, 2020 In that very first moment when the nurse handed Fabian his son, nothing else mattered. The worries and the challenges of the last two months melted away. Now, he was in a regional hospital at his wife’s bedside, holding his tiny newborn with a full head of jet-black hair and adorable dimples. He was amazingly grateful. His family was healthy. He was healthy. Thanks to the care he received at Englewood Health, he could tuck his children into bed tonight, make them breakfast in the morning and enjoy watching them grow every day after that.

With his wife, step-son, step-daughter and newborn son, Fabian’s family was complete. Enormously grateful for the life-saving care he received at Englewood Health, he reflects back on his experience.

The other day, when my son Dante woke up from his nap, he pulled himself up from his crib and stretched his arms out to me with an amazing giggle. These are the best days of my life. Had I not driven myself to Englewood Health that rainy day, I may never have met my son. At Englewood Health, I mattered. They were prepared with the equipment, supplies and medicine to treat me for COVID-19. Then as a cardiac patient, I was blessed with access to one of the best hospitals in the country.

I had never been to Englewood Health before last year, even though I live in Bergen County. For 14 years, I was a dietary aid at another hospital and I also worked in the emergency department for five years. I know first-hand the challenges that arise during a healthcare crisis. Yet, even as Englewood Health fought a global pandemic, I received extraordinary care from the COVID-19 care team, my cardiac team and cardiologist Dr. Dennis Kelly. It was as if I was a member of their own family.

In 2020, more than 1,300 supporters contributed over $4 million in the fight against COVID-19. Philanthropic partners are essential in the next chapter where a comprehensive vaccination program will reach countless patients, especially those most vulnerable.

On October 25, Englewood Health Foundation’s annual Walk for Awareness shifted to a virtual format, broadcasting live

on Facebook and featuring many special guest appearances.

Members of the Breast Center team and Honorary Chair Nina Pineda of WABC-TV led a fun cardio workout as part of the day’s virtual activities. Thanks to the generosity of many, the Walk raised over $180,000 to benefit The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center, as well as provide underinsured and uninsured patients life-saving care.
